Gryon japonicum (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) is a solitary egg parasitoid of Riptortus clavatus (Thunberg) (Hemiptera: Alydidae) one of the most important pests in soybean in Korean and Japan. Refrigeration of R. clavatus eggs for up to 120 days was evaluated as a method of mass production of G. japonicum. The refrigeration reduced the eclosion of eggs, thus no nymph emerged after 30 days of egg refrigeration. Increased duration of host acceptance behaviors by G. japonicum and some detrimental effects on parasitism rate, developmental time, longevity, and adult size of the parasitoid were found in refrigerated host eggs. However, all the biological parameters of G. japonicum were unaffected by the refrigeration of up to 30 days. Gryon japonicum parasitized 16 and 14 host eggs daily that were refrigerated for 15 and 30 days, respectively, which did not differ from parasitization of fresh host eggs. Furthermore, refrigeration of host eggs did not reduce the reproduction of the emerged adult parasitoids and emergence and sex ratio of their progeny. Gryon japonicum also parasitized 14 and 13 refrigerated host eggs per day kept at 26.3°C and 78.7% RH for 2 and 4 days of post-refrigeration without significant reduction, respectively. These results show that refrigeration of R. clavatus eggs can be a good method for mass rearing of the parasitoid, and the host eggs killed by cold storage can be supplemented in the field to boost field parasitism.  相似文献

Due to increased field occurrence of Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Alydidae) on various crops including soybean, persimmon and apple in recent years in Korea, demand for insecticide applications to control the stink bug has increased. Acute toxicity of eight pesticides on Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), a major egg parasitoid of R. pedestris, was compared in the laboratory. Fenitrothion, spinosad, cyfluthrin, etofenprox and carbosulfan caused 100% mortality of O. nezarae within 24 hours by topical application or exposure to residue. Fenitrothion was also highly toxic to the parasitoid when ingested orally. In a previous study, release of refrigerated inviable eggs of R. pedestris was found to increase field parasitism; therefore, we evaluated the sublethal effect of fenitrothion when O. nezarae parasitised refrigerated or unrefrigerated host eggs. Although parasitism rates on both kinds of eggs significantly decreased when O. nezarae were provided with host eggs sprayed with fenitrothion, no difference in parasitism rate, adult emergence, sex ratio, development time and longevity of O. nezarae was found between the refrigerated or unrefrigerated host eggs when the insecticide was treated either before or after oviposition. There was no significant sublethal effect when parasitised host eggs were treated with the insecticide. From these results, all the insecticides tested showed high, acute toxicity against O. nezarae with relatively lower sublethal effects. Refrigeration of host eggs did not affect the susceptibility of O. nezarae to insecticides.  相似文献

Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) acts as a facultative hyperparasitoid of Gryon japonicum (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) sympatric parasitoid of Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Alydidae). A longer period of host egg exploitation by both parasitoid species would be beneficial for O. nezarae, while G. japonicum tends to be successful when the parasitoids have only a short exploitation period. We demonstrated the interspecific competition by measuring parasitism in nine combinations of host densities (10, 20, and 40 eggs) and exploitation times (1, 3, and 5 days). To reflect the gregarious-solitary dichotomy of the two species, three O. nezarae and one G. japonicum mated females were compared in addition to a one-to-one competition design. We found that O. nezarae was the better competitor when exploitation time was longer than 1 day, irrespective of host density. Total parasitism rate and progeny emergence of O. nezarae were 1.6–2.8 and 4.7–7.3 times higher than for G. japonicum in three-to-one competition design, respectively. Although G. japonicum females were more effective in host finding (as shown by their higher per capita rate of parasitism when exploitation time was short), their progeny suffered high mortality from the larval interspecific competition inside multiparasitized host eggs. These results suggest that gregarious O. nezarae is the superior competitor when host eggs are available for longer period of time while solitary G. japonicum is superior when host resources are available for only a limited time.  相似文献

Storing host eggs at low temperatures has been used to mass rear parasitoids of stink bugs, including Riptortus pedestris Fabricius (Hemiptera: Alydidae), a major soybean pest in Korea and Japan. However, no information on the effect of cold storage on parasitization by Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), one of the major parasitoids of R. pedestris, has been published. In this study, we examined biological attributes, including parasitism rate, development time, sex ratio, adult size, and longevity, of O. nezarae when the adult parasitoids were provided with host eggs refrigerated for 0, 15, 30, 60, and 120 days at 2.0 °C. None of the attributes of the first or second generation of O. nezarae was negatively affected by host egg refrigeration up to 30 days. In addition, O. nezarae could parasitize refrigerated host eggs successfully for the first four days of post-refrigeration period when they were kept at 26.3 °C and 78.7% RH conditions. Therefore, refrigeration of R. pedestris eggs can be a good method to mass rear O. nezarae.  相似文献

Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) is a polyphagous egg parasitoid of various true bugs, including Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Alydidae), a major pest of soybean and fruit trees in northeastern Asia. This study was conducted to develop artificial host eggs containing insect haemolymph for mass rearing of O. nezarae. The haemolymph of Chinese oak silkworm (Antheraea pernyi Guérin-Méneville) pupae was found to be most suitable for artificial eggs for the complete development of O. nezarae. Among 764 parasitoid eggs laid in artificial eggs, 49.2% successfully developed to adult parasitoids. The developmental time in artificial eggs was delayed by 3–5 days relative to that observed in natural host eggs; however there was no significant difference in the length of hind tibia between adults that emerged from artificial and natural host eggs. Moreover, new generations that emerged from artificial eggs reproduced on all egg types offered (either natural or artificial eggs). We propose that the artificial eggs developed herein can therefore be an effective means for mass rearing O. nezarae.  相似文献

Egg parasitism of the bean bug, Riptortus clavatus (Thunberg) (Hemiptera: Alydidae), was surveyed using individual egg bags in a sweet persimmon orchard and at Gyeongsang National University (GNU) campus, Korea in 2006. The effect of (E)-2-hexenyl (Z)-3-hexenoate (E2HZ3H), one component of R. clavatus aggregation pheromone, on the parasitism enhancement was tested at GNU campus and in a soybean field in 2005 and 2006, respectively. In 2006, two egg parasitoid species, Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) and Gryon japonicum (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae), emerged from R. clavatus eggs. Parasitism by O. nezarae was 9.4–48.3% in mid August to mid September in GNU campus and 6.7–30.0% at the orchard. Total parasitism by G. japonicum (2.5%) at both sites throughout the experimental period was lower than that by O. nezarae (12.5%). This survey revealed nearly no activity of the two species after October at both sites. G. japonicum was solitary and O. nezarae could be either solitary or gregarious. From a single R. clavatus egg, one female or one male G. japonicum emerged. However, an average of 4.3 O. nezarae emerged from one host egg. It took 12.6 d for G. japonicum and 12.0 d for O. nezarae to emerge from R. clavatus eggs in the laboratory. Treatment with E2HZ3H increased parasitism by O. nezarae in both years, but did not increase parasitism by G. japonicum. This suggests that E2HZ3H can be used as a kairomone to reduce the density of R. clavatus in the fields where natural parasitism by O. nezarae is high.  相似文献

Trissolcus nigripedius Nakagawa and Telenomus gifuensis Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) are solitary egg parasitoids of Dolycoris baccarum L. (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), a polyphagous seed-sucking bug of agricultural crops. Field examinations revealed that the two parasitoids are the most common species, but only a single species emerge from a host egg mass. To explain this observation we tested two hypotheses of interspecific host discrimination and asymmetry in competitive interaction between Tr. nigripedius and Te. gifuensis. Trissolcus nigripedius and Te. gifuensis could discriminate host egg pre-parasitized by either self or conspecific like other scelionid parasitoids that use external mark on host eggs. When provided with host eggs pre-parasitized by each other, both Tr. nigripedius and Te. gifuensis multiparasitized 94% and 100% of the host eggs without interspecific host discrimination, respectively. Interestingly, from the multiparasitized eggs irrespective of oviposition sequence, progeny of Te. gifuensis always survive better than Tr. nigripedius. Telenomus gifuensis is superior in immature competition probably due to shorter egg incubation period after oviposition, hence progeny of Te. gifuensis become first instar faster than that of Tr. nigripedius. However, adult Tr. nigripedius is always superior competitor in possessing and guarding the host eggs even after oviposition against Te. gifuensis. Therefore, the asymmetry in competitive interaction between Tr. nigripedius and Te. gifuensis may explain the emergence of a single species from a host egg mass in the field in spite of no interspecific host discrimination.  相似文献

Trissolcus nigripedius Nakagawa (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) is an egg parasitoid of Dolycoris baccarum L. (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), a polyphagous insect pest of many crops including soybean. As a method for mass-rearing to augment the parasitoid, cold storage of host eggs were evaluated in the laboratory. After 0 (control), 8, 20, 60, 90, and 120 days of refrigeration, host eggs were given to adult female T. nigripedius. Host acceptance behaviors of the parasitoid, categorized as drumming, oviposition, and marking, on the refrigerated eggs and biological attributes of offspring were assessed. Most of the attributes examined were affected by the refrigeration of host eggs. But host eggs could be refrigerated for up to two months without significant change in emergence rate and sex ratio and with 90% of parasitism. In addition, the second generation of the parasitoid was not negatively affected at all. However, frozen eggs of D. baccarum can not be used for rearing the parasitoid since parasitism rate decreased to 44% on host eggs frozen for 8 days. Refrigeration of D. baccarum eggs could be useful for mass-rearing and augmentation of T. nigripedius to control D. baccarum without reduction in the quality of parasitoid’s progeny. Furthermore, refrigerated eggs could be supplemented in the field to boost the population of T. nigripedius since immature D. baccarum can not hatch after 20 days of refrigeration.  相似文献

Abstract The preference and density response test9 of egg parasitoid, Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii, to the eggs of soybean stick bugs, Riptortus clavatus Thunberg and Piezodorus hybneri Gmelin, were carried out in this study. In the free choice test, O. nezarae emerged from both eggs of stick bug prefer R. clavatus eggs only in the various ratios of host egg densities. In non‐choice test, O. nezarae emerged from P. hybneri eggs parasitize both R. clavatus and P. hybneri eggs, showing a high parasitism on host eggs. However, O. nezarae reared on R. clavatus eggs had a significantly lower parasitism on the eggs of P. hybneri. Olfactometer test showed that the odor emitted from R. clavatus eggs had a great influence on the host searching and parasitizing behavior of O. nezarae. The number of R. clavatus and P. hybneri eggs parasitized by O. nezarae gradually increased with the increase of host egg densities. However, the parasitism of O. nezarae to R. clavatus eggs decreased with the increase of host density. The parasitism of O. nezarae are significantly lower (P < 0.05) on host egg P. hybneri under the laboratory condition, especially for O. nezarae emerged from R. clavatus eggs. This research results implied that in the soybean field, there were some optimal or spatial barriers for O. nezarae to find R. clavatus eggs efficiently.  相似文献

Winter survival and oviposition before and after overwintering in Ooencyrtus nezarae, an egg parasitoid of phytophagous heteropterans, were examined in Osaka, Japan. Eggs of Riptortus clavatus parasitized by O. nezarae were kept under natural photoperiod and temperature. When honey was supplied, some female adults emerging from early September to late November overwintered. The percentage of overwintering individuals increased as the date of adult emergence advanced. Most female adults supplied with honey and hosts oviposited soon after emergence, then stopped laying eggs. Female adults emerging in mid‐October and early November laid eggs and then overwintered. The induction of diapause in the field seems to vary greatly depending on host availability. Without honey, the survival time of female adults was very short, whether host eggs were supplied or not. After overwintering, most females began to lay eggs in early May if host eggs were supplied, and they produced both male and female progeny. In the study area, a legume field in Osaka, parasitization by O. nezarae was observed from early July to November.  相似文献

Trichogramma spp. (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) parasitoids have been commonly used as biological control agents in insect pest management. Host quality is believed to influence parasitism, host preference, and suitability for parasitoids. To date, limited studies have compared the parasitism of Trichogramma parasitoids on fertilized, unfertilized, and sterilized host eggs. Hence, we studied the performance of three Trichogramma egg parasitoids, Trichogramma japonicum Ashmead, Trichogramma chilonis Ishii, and Trichogramma leucaniae Pang & Chen, on fertilized, unfertilized, and ultraviolet (UV)‐irradiated fertilized (UVF) eggs of rice moth, Corcyra cephalonica (Stainton) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). In a no‐choice test, T. japonicum and T. leucaniae parasitized significantly more fertilized or UVF than unfertilized hosts, and T. chilonis parasitized significantly more UVF than either fertilized or unfertilized hosts. In a choice test, all three Trichogramma parasitoids parasitized UVF hosts the most, and unfertilized hosts the least. There were similar percentages of adult emergence and female progeny among fertilized, unfertilized, and UVF hosts for all three Trichogramma parasitoids, except that T. japonicum had significantly lower adult emergence on fertilized hosts. We also found that all three Trichogramma parasitoids developed slower on unfertilized hosts. Regardless of host treatments, T. leucaniae had the longest developmental time and T. chilonis had the shortest. We conclude that Trichogramma parasitoids prefer parasitizing UVF eggs of C. cephalonica without negative effects on their emergence and sex allocation.  相似文献

Following the accidental introduction and spread of the invasive polyphagous agricultural pest Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), the two European egg parasitoids Anastatus bifasciatus (Geoffroy) (Hymenoptera: Eupelmidae) and Ooencyrtus telenomicida (Vassiliev) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) have been investigated for inundative biological control. Since the competititve outcome between the two generalist parasitoids is difficult to predict, intrinsic competition was investigated with a time-course development study. Both species readily oviposited in H. halys eggs containing eggs and early instar larvae of the competitor, but oviposition decreased when eggs contained late instar larvae and pupae. Ooencyrtus telenomicida offspring emergence from multiparasitized eggs was significantly lower than that from rearing controls, independent of the order of parasitization. Anastatus bifasciatus offspring emergence was not influenced by the presence of O. telenomicida when it parasitized as the first species, but emergence was decreased after oviposition in eggs containing O. telenomicida larvae and pupae. There was no indication that O. telenomicida can act as a facultative hyperparasitoid of A. bifasciatus. These results suggest that A. bifasciatus is the superior intrinsic competitor and no or minor negative implications for A. bifasciatus are expected if released in combination with O. telenomicida.  相似文献

Ongoing studies by our group showed that the outcome of the intrinsic competition between two solitary egg parasitoids, Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) and Ooencyrtus telenomicida (Vassiliev) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), is dominated by O. telenomicida. In this article we investigated the role played by the ovipositing O. telenomicida female in the suppression of a T. basalis competitor. Laboratory experiments were conducted by allowing an O. telenomicida female to puncture the eggs of Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) with her ovipositor (= no oviposition) or to parasitize them. The results show that O. telenomicida relies on some physiological mechanisms to mediate its interspecific intrinsic competition with T. basalis. In fact, the emergence of T. basalis was strongly reduced in host eggs that were parasitized either before or after being punctured by O. telenomicida at fixed time intervals (5, 15, 30, or 45 h). The low percentage of emergence of T. basalis (ranging from approximately 4–20%) was a consequence of the delay and growth rate reduction of larval development. Furthermore, the percentage of eclosion of N. viridula nymphs was negatively affected by the O. telenomicida female’s punctures (96% from healthy host eggs, 4% from punctured host eggs). Host eggs punctured or oviposited in by O. telenomicida showed alterations in the ooplasm including some melanized‐like areas near the hole made with the ovipositor; such alterations indicate that the adult parasitoid releases substances that affect the host eggs survival. These results suggest that the O. telenomicida female influences both the physiological interspecific parasitoid‐parasitoid interaction, as well as the host‐parasitoid interaction, providing, for the first time in egg parasitoids, evidence that physiological suppression of some competitive egg parasitoids is mediated by the ovipositing female.  相似文献

Summary Patterns of the sex ratio allocation of Gryon japonicum (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae), a solitary egg parasitoid of Riptortus clavatus (Thunberg) (Heteroptera: Alydidae), were investigated in the laboratory, and the result was checked against the field data on the sex composition of the parasitoid. When five host eggs were presented simultaneously to each of the females of G. japonicum in a laboratory experiment, they had a strong tendency to lay a male egg in second host egg and female eggs in the others. However, when four host eggs were presented to each female more than 3 h after the completion of oviposition on a host egg, most of the females laid male eggs in the third oviposition, i.e. the second host eggs after the experimental interruption of oviposition. These results indicated that there was a mechanism for G. japonicum to produce a male egg in the second host egg in consecutive ovipositions, and that the mechanism was reset by more than 3 h intervals of oviposition. By this mechanism, G. japonicum is thought to produce the precise sex ratio in response to the size of a host egg batch. Field data on the size of a host egg batch and the sex composition of the parasitoid in a host egg batch supported this view.  相似文献

Chemical signals mediating interactions betweenGaleruca tanaceti and its egg parasitoidOomyzus galerucivorus (Hymenoptera, Eulophidae) were studied. Neither odor of gravid females ofG. tanaceti nor volatiles of their feces were attractive to the parasitoid. However, the presence of the beetles’ feces on a substrate arrested the parasitoid and elicited frequent antennal drumming. Thus, feces may contain a kairomone important for host finding. Odors of damaged and undamaged host plants had no effect on the parasitoids.O. galerucivorus did not detect its host eggs at close range but encountered them by chance. Neither the structure nor the dark color of the egg surface play a key role in host recognition, but chemicals of the extrachorion which could be isolated by dichloromethane. Fractionation of the dichloromethane extract by TLC revealed a single active fraction which induced host recognition behavior. Since the eggs ofG. tanaceti contain anthraquinones and anthrones which are active as feeding deterrents against predators, we hypothesized that reproductive success ofO. galerucivorus is due to sequestration of these protective compounds. However, GC-MS analyses revealed that there was no transfer of them from the host egg into the adult parasitoid.  相似文献

1. Ptilothrix plumata (Hymenoptera) is a neotropical solitary bee that nests in bare, sandy soils. Data on the biology and behaviour of this species are provided. Egg‐to‐adult development time of a neotropical solitary bee and its parasitoids is quantified for the first time. 2. The bee showed huge variability in egg‐to‐adult development time. There are two categories of eggs relative to adult emergence. The same season eggs are those from which adults emerge in the same reproductive season in which the eggs were laid. Adults from next season eggs emerge in the next dry reproductive season. This variability in egg‐to‐adult development time is reached through prepupal diapause. The bee larval parasitoids Leucospis genalis (Hymenoptera) and Anthrax sp. (Diptera) showed similar range in their development times. The data show that diapause is controlled by season. 3. By synchronising adult emergence, this variability in egg‐to‐adult development time facilitates mate finding, and population recruitment is a consequence of the bees avoiding the unfavourable reproductive season.  相似文献

Multiparasitism involves competition between larvae inside the host. Telenomus podisi (Ashmead) and Trissolcus urichi (Crawford) (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) are solitary egg parasitoids of Piezodorus guildinii Westwood (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), an important soybean pest. Egg masses partially parasitized by one species were offered to females of the other species. Both species attacked randomly unparasitized and parasitized hosts. Emergence from multiparasitized eggs was greater for T. urichi than for T. podisi, although it was lower than emergence from eggs parasitized by T. urichi alone. Emergence of each species was independent of the order in which they parasitized and of time elapsed between ovipositions. Progeny sex ratio obtained from multiparasitized and from parasitized eggs were similar for both parasitoids. Our results suggest that T. urichi is a better intrinsic competitor than T. podisi for P. guildinii eggs. In the field, however, T. podisi was the dominant species, and T. urichi could be using other pentatomid eggs as resource.  相似文献

The invasion of Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) has caused severe economic damage in crops in North America and Europe, motivating research to identify its natural enemies, both in native and invaded areas. In its Asian native range, the main natural enemies are egg parasitoids, among which the most effective are Trissolcus japonicus (Ashmead) and Trissolcus mitsukurii (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) in China and Japan, respectively. In Europe, biology, host range, and impact of most native scelionid species are not well‐known. The present study aimed to investigate (1) presence and abundance of scelionid species that parasitize native Pentatomidae and Scutelleridae eggs in Northwest Italy, and (2) their ability to develop on H. halys eggs. During 4‐year field surveys, egg masses were collected and reared until bug nymph or adult parasitoid emergence. Then, the obtained scelionid females were tested for their ability to parasitize H. halys eggs in laboratory no‐choice experiments. Egg masses of all collected bug species were parasitized, and Telenomus spp. (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae), Trissolcus belenus (Walker), and Anastatus bifasciatus (Geoffroy) (Hymenoptera: Eupelmidae) were the most common parasitoids. In the laboratory, Trissolcus kozlovi Rjachovskij was the only species to significantly produce offspring from fresh H. halys eggs, whereas all tested Trissolcus species significantly induced host egg abortion (non‐reproductive effects). This study provides knowledge of the parasitoid species associated with native bugs, and represents a starting point to investigate the intricate interactions between native and exotic parasitoids recently found in northern Italy. These egg parasitoids could potentially be effective biocontrol agents of H. halys.  相似文献

We examined interspecific competition between the egg-larval polyembryonic parasitoid Copidosoma floridanum (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) and the gregarious larval endoparasitoid Glyptapanteles pallipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). Approximately 72% of multiparasitized Acanthoplusia agnata (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) produced C. floridanum adults, 14% produced G. pallipes adults, and 14% died without producing any parasitoids. Development was delayed and the rate of weight gain was reduced in multiparasitized hosts that produced C. floridanum compared with singly-parasitized hosts. In contrast, only weight was reduced in multiparasitized hosts that produced G. pallipes adults. Compared with single parasitism, the brood size of wasps emerging from multiparasitized hosts was reduced in both species. The percentage of hosts containing precocious larvae of C. floridanum, which are considered to be soldiers, did not increase in response to parasitization by G. pallipes. However, developmental cessation and death of G. pallipes eggs and larvae may be closely related to the number of coexisting precocious larvae.  相似文献

Host age is an important determinant of host acceptance and suitability for egg parasitoids. As host embryonic development advances, the quality of resources available to the parasitoid offspring typically declines, usually resulting in reduced acceptance levels by foraging females and lower offspring fitness. We examined the ability of the parasitoid Telenomus podisi Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) to parasitize and develop in Podisus maculiventris (Say) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) eggs of different ages. In laboratory experiments, we measured the effect of host age (6, 24, 48, 72, 96, or 120 h old) on parasitism rate and offspring fitness parameters such as survival, development time, sex ratio, and size. Contrary to our expectations, parasitism rate did not differ between host age treatments, nor did sex ratio allocation, offspring size, or the fecundity of newly emerged female offspring. However, parasitoid offspring had a longer development time with increasing host age. This trend was stronger for males than for females, which we suggest could reduce the degree of protandry among offspring emerging from older host eggs, thus increasing the rate of virginity upon leaving the emergence patch and resulting in more frequent off‐patch mating by female offspring in nature. Overall, our results suggest that all stages of P. maculiventris embryonic development are suitable for acceptance and development of T. podisi. Unlike most species of egg parasitoids, T. podisi has evolved mechanisms to utilize host resources, regardless of host developmental stage, with relatively minor fitness consequences.  相似文献
