We studied the seed dispersal spectra of 46 Iberian plant communities of five types: potential woodland, forest fringe, substitutional scrubland, nitrophile communities and montane communities. There were no significant differences between the spectra of communities of the same type from Mediterranean and Eurosiberian regions. Biotic dispersal is most common at mature stages of succession, and abiotic dispersal at immature stages.  相似文献

Safflower has been transformed for field scale molecular farming of high-value proteins including several pharmaceuticals. Viable safflower seed remaining in the soil seed bank after harvest could facilitate seed and pollen-mediated gene flow. Seeds may germinate in subsequent years and volunteer plants may flower and potentially outcross with commodity safflower and/or produce seed. Seeds from volunteers could become admixed with conventional crops at harvest, and/or replenish the seed bank. Seed in following crops could be transported locally and internationally and facilitate gene flow in locations where regulatory thresholds and public acceptance differ from Canada. Seed-mediated gene flow was examined in three studies. Safflower seed loss and viability following harvest of commercial fields of a non-transgenic cultivar were determined. We assessed seed longevity of transgenic and non-transgenic safflower, on the soil surface and buried at two depths. Finally, we surveyed commercial safflower fields at different sites and measured density and growth stage of safflower volunteers, in other crops the following year and documented volunteer survival and viable seed production. Total seed loss at harvest in commercial fields, ranged from 231 to 1,069 seeds m−2 and the number of viable seeds ranged from 81 to 518 seeds m−2. Safflower has a relatively short longevity in the seed bank and no viable seeds were found after 2 years. Based on the seed burial studies it is predicted that winter conditions would reduce safflower seed viability on the soil surface by >50%, leaving between 40 and 260 viable seeds m−2. The density of safflower volunteers emerging in the early spring of the following year ranged from 3 to 11 seedlings m−2. Safflower volunteers did not survive in fields under chemical fallow, but in some cereal fields small numbers of volunteers did survive and generate viable seed. Results will be used to make recommendations for best management practices to reduce seed-mediated gene flow from commercial production of plant molecular farming with safflower.  相似文献

Digital images of ex situ germplasm stored in the Sardinian Germplasm Bank (BG-SAR) were used for the application of image analysis techniques at the Stazione Sperimentale di Granicoltura per la Sicilia. The analysed accessions refer to 148 taxonomic units belonging to 102 genera and 47 families, typical of the Sardinian flora, and of the Mediterranean basin in general.The images of diaspores were acquired by a flatbed scanner and elaborated with a macro specially developed for the morphometric and colorimetric measurements. This method allowed carrying out a database for the characterization of autochthonous germplasm in entry to the bank and the realization of statistic classifiers for the discrimination of genera and species within the following families: Apiaceae, Boraginaceae, Caryophyllaceae, Cistaceae, Fabaceae and Scrophulariaceae. Such classifiers, based on the linear discriminant analysis (LDA) technique and checked by cross-validation, showed a performance included between 74.3% and 96.4%.In addition, for the genus Astragalus, it was possible to elaborate a classifier able to identify very similar taxa of a species complex, obtaining a performance between 83.7% and 100%. Such analysis proved the validity of the methodology also from the taxonomic point of view.Suggestions for subsequent methodological progress, which could offer applications in other research issues, such as ecological analysis, soil seed bank and archaeological botany are proposed.  相似文献

Several theoretical and empirical studies have examined the influence of environmental conditions on seed traits and germination strategies of annual species. A positive relationship between seed mass and dormancy has been described for annuals occupying climatically unpredictable ecosystems. Larger-seeded species tend to have higher seedling survival rates, while dormancy allows a bet-hedging strategy in unpredictable environments. Until now, these ideas have been addressed primarily for only one or a few focal species, without considering differences among populations and communities. The novelty of the present study lies in the population and community-level approach, where a comprehensive seed trait database including 158 annual species occurring along a gradient of rainfall variability and aridity in Israel was used to ask the following question: Does average seed mass and dormancy of annual populations and communities decrease with increasing aridity and rainfall unpredictability?Soil seed bank samples were collected at the end of the summer drought, before the onset of the rains, from four plant communities. Germination was tested under irrigated conditions during three consecutive germination seasons to determine the overall seed germinability in each soil sample. Seed mass was obtained from newly produced seeds collected at the study sites in late spring. The community level results showed that, in contrast to common theoretical knowledge, seed mass and dormancy of the dominant annual species decreased with increasing aridity and rainfall variability. Accordingly, a negative correlation was found between seed mass and seed germination fractions. The present study demonstrates that an analysis of seed traits along climatic gradients is significantly improved by approaches that target both population and community levels simultaneously. A critical evaluation sheds new light upon the selective pressures that act on seed ecology of annuals along a climatic gradient and facilitates formulation of more mechanistic hypotheses about factors governing critical seed traits.  相似文献

This study examined the changes in distribution patterns of 13 herbaceous plant species from 1998 to 2000 in ditch banks along the edges of arable fields in the Netherlands. The objective was to test if spatial dynamics could be related to spatial isolation and disturbance of habitat and to the dispersal and seed bank characteristics of the species. Knowledge of these relations should be used to increase the effectivity of agri-environmental schemes aiming at an increase of botanical diversity. All species frequently colonized empty patches and populations in occupied patches frequently went extinct. Most colonization events occurred within 50 m of conspecific source patches in the preceding year, but colonization events in patches at distances more than 200 m from conspecific source patches were also observed. The colonization probabilities decreased with isolation distance. For nine species this relation was statistically significant, after correction for year and habitat. The extinction probabilities increased with isolation. For only four species this relation was statistically significant. Both colonization and extinction probabilities were more often statistically significant related to isolation for species with transient seed banks than species with persistent seed banks. Implications for management options aiming at survival of plant species in fragmented landscapes are discussed.  相似文献

The loss of largest-bodied individuals within species of frugivorous animals is one of the major consequences of defaunation. The gradual disappearance of large-bodied frugivores is expected to entail a parallel deterioration in seed dispersal functionality if the remaining smaller-sized individuals are not so effective as seed dispersers. While the multiple impacts of the extinction of large bodied species have been relatively well studied, the impact of intraspecific downsizing (i.e. the extinction of large individuals within species) on seed dispersal has rarely been evaluated. Here we experimentally assessed the impact of body-size reduction in the frugivorous lizard Gallotia galloti (Lacertidae), an endemic species of the Canary Islands, on the seed germination patterns of two fleshy-fruited plant species (Rubia fruticosa and Withania aristata). Seed germination curves and the proportions of germinated seeds were compared for both plant species after being defecated by large-sized individuals and small-sized individuals. The data show that seeds of W. aristata defecated by larger-sized lizards germinated faster and in a higher percentage than those defecated by small-sized lizards, while no differences were found for R. fruticosa seeds. Our results suggest that disappearance of the largest individuals of frugivorous species may impair recruitment of some plant species by worsening seed germination. They also warn us of a potential cryptic loss of seed dispersal functionality on defaunated ecosystems, even when frugivorous species remain abundant.  相似文献

In wetlands, fluctuating water levels create opportunities for recruitment of new individuals from seed banks, and drawdown periods often favor the establishment of species adapted for life in shallow water. In this study, floating island formation functioned similarly to drawdowns in water level by creating patches of sediment that were less inundated relative to the surrounding deep water marsh. The disturbance of floating island formation (i.e., mats of sediment and vegetation rising vertically in the water column) also resulted in reduced cover of the dominant rooted, floating-leaved macrophyte, thereby creating temporary gaps for the establishment of other species. To assess how floating island formation influences species richness and composition of wetland plant assemblages relative to surrounding deep water marsh, field surveys of plant percent cover on and off of islands were conducted over 2 years, along with a controlled greenhouse seed bank experiment in which levels of inundation were manipulated. Five plant species were present in deep water marsh compared to 22 in surrounding on floating islands. Plant assemblages on floating islands consisted primarily of emergent species, while floating-leaved perennials dominated the deep water marsh. Species richness and assemblage composition in the greenhouse seed bank experiment differed among water level treatments in a manner consistent with differences observed in field surveys. Assemblages germinating under minimal inundation treatments were more species rich (3.5–4.3 species per sample) and contained more emergent species (>450 individuals m−2) than did those germinating under flooded conditions (2.8–2.9 species per sample and <405 individuals m−2). This study, in addition to being the only reported seed bank study of temporary (i.e., seasonal) floating islands, demonstrates that islands altered levels of inundation favoring the germination of more species-rich, emergent wetland plant assemblages. Because these islands persisted long enough for several species to set seed, their formation may be one mechanism by which the seed bank is replenished and populations of otherwise uncommon species are maintained.  相似文献

The impact of grazing on the vegetation of Moroccan temporary pools has been studied at 2 scales: regional (inter-pools) and local (intra-pools). Half of the 16 forest pools studied is located in a reserve and ungrazed. The other half, located within public forest, is grazed. Vegetation relevés coupled to water-depths measurements were carried out in each pool. The results showed a significant effect of grazing on both scales of analysis. This effect was found in the species composition of the vegetation, which differed between the 2 types of pools, and in the lower species richness and abundance of plant species in the grazed pools. These differences are interpreted as resulting from the selection by herbivores and the differential tolerance of species to disturbance. These impacts are likely to expose certain species to local extinction by reducing their populations.  相似文献

Studies have shown that weed invasion into grasslands may be suppressed if the resident plant community is sufficiently diverse. The objective of this study was to determine whether increased forage plant diversity in grazed pasture communities might be associated with reduced weed abundance both in the aboveground vegetation and soil seed bank. Data were collected from a pasture experiment established in 1994 in Missouri, USA. The experiment consisted of 15 m×15 m plots sown with Festuca arundinacea Schreb. or Bromus inermis Leysser as a base species in mixtures of 1, 2, 3, 6, or 8 forage species. The plots were grazed by cattle during each growing season from 1998 to 2002. Aboveground plant species composition in each plot was measured using a point step method. Soil cores were collected in 1999 and 2002, and the species composition of germinable weed seeds in plots were evaluated by identifying seedlings as they germinated over an 8-week period. Species diversity was measured using several indices: species richness (S), Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H), and forage species evenness (J). Aboveground weed abundance in plots was unrelated to forage species richness (S), but weed abundance declined as the evenness (J) of resident forage species increased in mixtures. The species composition of mixtures may have affected weed abundance. Weeds both in the soil seed bank and aboveground vegetation were less abundant in mixtures that contained F. arundinacea compared with mixtures that contained B. inermis. Although variables like forage plant productivity may also suppress weed abundance in pastures, our results suggest that maintaining an evenly distributed mixture of forage species may help suppress weeds as well.

Untersuchungen haben gezeigt, dass die Unkrautinvasion in Grünländer unterdrückt sein kann, wenn die ansässige Pflanzengemeinschaft ausreichend divers ist. Die Zielsetzung dieser Untersuchung war es zu bestimmen, ob eine erhöhte Futterpflanzendiversität in beweideten Grünlandgemeinschaften mit einer verringerten Unkrautabundanz sowohl bei der oberirdischen Vegetation als auch in der Bodensamenbank verbunden sein kann. Die Daten wurden in einem Weidelandexperiment gesammelt, das 1994 in Missouri, USA, etabliert wurde. Das Experiment bestand aus 15 m×15 m Probeflächen, die mit Festuca arundinacea Schreb. oder Bromus inermis Leysser als Basisarten in Mischungen von 1, 2, 3, 6 oder 8 Futterarten eingesät waren. Die Probeflächen wurden während jeder Wachstumssaison von 1998 bis 2002 stark mit Vieh beweidet. Die oberirdische Pflanzenartenzusammensetzung wurde in jeder Fläche mit einer Punktstopmethode gemessen. Bodenproben wurden 1999 und 2002 gesammelt und die Artenzusammensetzung der keimfähigen Unkrautsamen wurde in den Probeflächen bewertet, indem die Keimlinge identifiziert wurden, die in einer 8-wöchigen Periode keimten. Die Artendiversität wurde unter Verwendung verschiedener Indizes gemessen: Artenreichtum (S), Shannon–Wiener-Diversitätsindex (H) und Futterarten-Äquitabilität (J). Die oberirdische Unkrautartenabundanz in den Probeflächen stand in keiner Beziehung zum Futterartenreichtum (S), aber die Unkrautabundanz nahm ab, wenn die Äquitabilität (J) der ansässigen Futterarten in den Mischungen zunahm. Die Artenzusammensetzung der Mischungen könnte die Unkrautabundanz beeinflusst haben. Sowohl die Unkräuter in der Bodensamenbank, als auch in der oberirdischen Vegetation waren weniger abundant in Mischungen, die F. arundinacea enthielten, im Vergleich zu denen, die B. inermis enthielten. Obgleich Variablen wie die Futterpflanzenproduktivität möglicherweise ebenfalls die Unkrautabundanz im Weideland unterdrücken, lassen unsere Ergebnisse vermuten, dass die Aufrechterhaltung einer gleichmäßigen Mischung von Futterarten ebenfalls helfen kann, die Unkräuter zu unterdrücken.  相似文献

Open base-rich sandy habitats are often characterised by an extensive cover of biological soil crusts (BSCs). We studied the impact of mechanical disturbances on cyanobacteria/algae-dominated BSCs, macro-cryptogams (bryophytes, lichens), phanerogams and their regeneration processes in a 3-year field experiment in a temperate region. We compared controls with two fine-scale disturbance regimes, each based on 50 plots (20 cm×20 cm): 1. BSCs were raked (weak disturbance), 2. BSCs were completely removed (strong disturbance). We used a Sileno conicae-Cerastion semidecandri habitat as a model area for the field study and ask if the crusts are able to regenerate or will be replaced by macro-cryptogams and/or phanerogams.  相似文献

Summary A factorial field experiment was designed to test the effects of small mammals and above- and below-ground invertebrates on plant species richness and composition in native tallgrass prairie at Konza Prairie Research Natural Area, northeast Kansas. Over a 4-year period, Microtus ochrogaster densities were maintained by live-trapping in fenced plots, and invertebrate levels were reduced using the pesticides carbaryl for above-ground invertebrates and an organophosphate (isofenphos) for belowground invertebrates. ANOVA according to a split-plot design of plant species biomass data harvested in 1984 and 1986 revealed few significant effects of either small mammal densities or pesticide application. Of 54 species harvested from both sample dates, only 10 were significantly affected by either treatment. Analysis of species richness according to 8 life-form classes provided a clearer pattern of response than did biomass either by species or life-form class. For example, numbers of C4 grasses were reduced by increasing small mammal densities, whereas numbers of C4 annual forbs were lowest when above-ground herbivory was reduced. While consumers have been shown to have strong effects on successional communities, the few significant results observed in this study suggests that the manipulated levels of small mammals and insects had few effects on a mature tallgrass prairie.Deceased May, 1986  相似文献

Calli were successfully induced from hypocotyls of eight wild diploid cotton species (Gossypium) on MSB (MS salts and B5 vitamins) medium supplemented with 0.09 μM 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) and 2.32 μM KT (kinetin). Plant growth regulator (PGR) combinations, adding GA3 (Gibberellic acid), high inorganic salt stress, and PGR-free media were used to induce embryogenic calli from nonembryogenic calli. Embryogenic cultures were induced from G. aridum S. (D4 genome), G. davidsonii K. (D3-d genome), G. klotzschianum A. (D3-k genome), G. raimondii U. (D5 genome), and G. stocksii M. (E1 genome). We then observed somatic embryogenesis in the five species while calli of G. africanum V. (A1-2 genome), G. anomalum W. (B1 genome), and G. bickii P. (G genome) remained nonembryogenic. Somatic embryogenesis was adjusted by changing sugar sources, regulating combinations of PGRs, and using cell suspension culture. Embryos at various developmental stages produced mature and germinating embryos when cultured on filter paper placed on the media containing different sugar sources. The utility of different sugar sources promoted globular embryos developing into cotyledonary stage and increased the frequency of cotyledonary embryos developing into normal plants. Normal plantlets were regenerated from G. davidsonii, G. klotzschianum, G. raimondii, and G. stocksii. Only abnormal plantlets were obtained in G. aridum. This work will contribute to broadening the number of regenerable cotton species and provide foundations for somatic hybridization in cotton to create new germplasm.  相似文献

Results of experimental retrieval of plant remains (both charred modern and fossil) from three sediment types (clay, gravel and sandy loam) carried out by environmental archaeologists from the Ancient Monuments Laboratory and the Central Archaeology Service, English Heritage, are reported. For each sediment type, six different treatments were carried out using three flotation machines of the Siraf type, two other machines in use in two archaeological units and one experimental machine. The results show that there is invariably considerable discrepancy between the amount of plant material present and that recovered, that the Serif-type machine is among the best currently available and that pretreatment of particular mineral soils may improve recovery of plant macrofossil material.  相似文献

Abstract. The flora of clear‐cuttings with soil scarification in forests was compared < 1–2 yr after cutting with that in mature herb‐rich forests in SW Finland. The total and mean numbers of vascular plant species both in the study areas and in the sample plots, were almost double in clear‐cut areas compared to mature forests. Clear‐cuttings and mature forests were distinctly separated by multivariate analyses (DCA). Several dozen species not found in forests were common in clear‐cut areas. Most of them probably belong to the neglected native species pool of early boreal forest succession and are dependent on the long‐term persistent seed bank or effective wind dispersal. It is emphasized that in forests many plant species are confined to the very early stages (< 2 yr) after disturbance. The storage effect of the long‐term persistent seed bank is crucial for the maintenance of plant diversity in boreal forests. Probably a considerable part of the flora of agricultural areas is composed of species that were originally disturbance dependent forest plants. Scarification is beneficial to disturbance dependent plants and may be useful in restoration of populations of species of early succession.  相似文献

Differentiation in the size and number of seeds among populations or particular individuals of a given species may depend on genetic features and environmental conditions. The objective of our study was to answer two questions: whether any differences exist in the size and shape of utricles among Carex spicata populations growing in several plant communities and whether the hypothesized differences remain constant in ‘common garden’ conditions (i.e. if the sedges grown in different plant communities are evolving distinctly separate ecotypes). We studied utricle morphological traits (projected area, width, length, W/L ratio and projected perimeter) and number of utricles per spike collected from plants grown in five different plant communities (natural sites) and from plants transferred to common garden conditions. C. spicata utricles showed significant variability of morphological traits that depended on the plant community of origin. Among five plant communities, the largest utricles were found in Agropyron repens–Urtica dioica and Convolvulo arvensis–Agropyretum repentis communities, while the smallest ones were in plants from the Lolio-Plantaginetum community. The similarity of the analyzed populations regarding sedge utricle traits corresponded to the similarity of plant communities where the populations had grown. Moreover, the differences in utricle traits collected from natural conditions remained stable in common garden conditions. This indicated that differences in traits among utricles had a physiological dependence on different biotope conditions or different interspecific interactions prevailing in the particular plant communities. The relationship between the similarities in the diaspores of the populations studied and the similarities in the ecological conditions of the communities may also indicate that the variability of utricles is important for evolution and adaptation.The results support the hypothesis that C. spicata populations in different communities are producing separate ecotypes, i.e. specific species forms with genetically fixed traits adapted to narrowly determined habitat conditions.  相似文献

Summary The concept of structure in phytosociology has been analysed. Three families of structure characteristics have been distinguished: (1) qualitative constituent, (2) quantitative constituent and (3) relational characteristics. Selected structural features are illustrated in some detail and completed by references. The key role of spatial structure has been emphasized and a simple method for the introduction of the parameters of spatial structure in data processing has been proposed.
