Introduced species have contributed significantly to the extinction of endemic species on islands. They also create new selection pressures on their prey that may result in modified life history strategies. Introduced viperine snakes (Natrix maura) have been implicated in the decline of the endemic midwife toad of Mallorca (Alytes muletensis). A comparison of A. muletensis tadpoles in natural pools with and without snakes showed that those populations subject to snake predation possessed longer tails with narrower tail fins but deeper tail muscles. Field and laboratory experiments showed that these changes in tail morphology could be induced by chemical and tactile cues from snakes. Populations of tadpoles that were subject to snake predation also displayed clear bimodal size-frequency distributions, with intermediate-sized tadpoles missing from the pools completely. Tadpoles in pools frequented by snakes developed faster in relation to their body size than those in pools without snakes. Variation in morphology between toad populations may therefore be caused by a combination of size-selective predation and tadpole plasticity. The results of this study indicate that the introduction of alien species can result in selection for induced defences, which may facilitate coexistence between predator and prey under certain conditions.  相似文献

Aim To devise a robust phylogenetic hypothesis for midwife toads (Alytes: Anura: Discoglossidae) and to discuss its implications for the reconstruction of the biogeographical history of the group. Location Western Palearctic. Methods Analysis of sequences of mitochondrial DNA (cytochrome b and 16S RNA, 861 bp) and 29 characters of cranial osteology of all species and subspecies within Alytes. Results Phylogenetic analyses support a sister group relationship between Alytes dickhilleni and A. muletensis, and of this clade with A. maurus. The monophyly of A. obstetricans is controversial; in particular, the phylogenetic position of A. obstetricans almogavarii is uncertain. The estimated dates for the cladogenetic events within Alytes are congruent with those derived from independent analyses (allozymes), except for the differentiation of A. o. almogavarii and the split between A. dickhilleni and A. muletensis. Main conclusions The phylogeny based on the analysis of morphological and mtDNA data differs from previous hypotheses in the positions of A. o. almogavarii and A. maurus. Events associated with the radiation of Alytes are the formation of large inland saline lakes in Iberia c. 16 Ma and the 11 ° C dramatic decrease in average annual temperature during the Middle–Late Badenian transition c. 14–13.5 Ma (A.cisternasii vs. the ancestor of the remaining clades), the structuring of the Neo‐Pyrenees and the reopening of the Betic Strait c. 10–8 Ma(A. o. almogavarii vs. A. obstetricans and vs. the subgenus Baleaphryne), the opening of the Gibraltar Strait at the end of the Messinian Salinity Crisis at c. 5.3 Ma (A. maurus vs. the ancestor of the A. dickhilleni A. muletensis clade) and a transmarine colonization event at c. 3 Ma (the ancestor of A. muletensis vs. A. dickhilleni). Following the new hypothesis, A. maurus, previously considered a subspecies of A. obstetricans, deserves species status. Second, A. o. almogavarii is a well‐differentiated lineage that was isolated from other A. obstetricans more than c. 5 Ma, but later lost its genetic and specific identity following secondary contact, hybridization and introgression with the main stock. The presence of a marked morphological and genetic diversity within A. obstetricans renders reconstruction of the evolutionary history of the genus more complicated than previously appreciated.  相似文献

The viperine snake (Natrix maura) is an important agent of decline of the threatened midwife toad (Alytes muletensis) of Mallorca. However, there is a paucity of biological data to support the notion that the viperine snake is an introduced species to the island. Here we compare mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequences and genomic ISSR-PCR fingerprints from Mallorcan and mainland European viperine snakes. Identical or nearly identical haplotypes and very similar ISSR-PCR profiles provide strong evidence that N. maura arrived only recently to Mallorca. There is no indication of a recent natural colonization of the island by transmarine dispersal. The data therefore support historical information that N. maura was introduced to Mallorca by human agency comparatively recently, and that management measures to reduce the impact of the snake on toad populations are justified.  相似文献

The courtship and mating behaviour of A. muletensis are described based on observations of captive toads. Courtship is prolonged and complex, with both sexes participating actively. Either sex can escape from amplexus and may do so if the partner fails to respond appropriately to courtship manocuvres. Females control the pace and duration of courtship. Females unable to obtain a mate drop their eggs unfertilized. Both sexes produce courtship vocalizations and either sex may initiate courtship, although females were observed to do so only when they were in danger of dropping their eggs. Physical competition in the form of interference and grappling may occur between either males or females, but was observed more frequently between females. The active role played by females during courtship in this species is discussed with regard to sex-role reversal theory and opportunities for mate choice.  相似文献

Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) is a fungus that causes the disease chytridiomycosis and is associated with widespread amphibian declines. Populations vary in their susceptibility to Bd infections, and the virulence of the infecting lineage can also vary. Both of these factors may manifest as a differential physiological stress response. In addition, variation in disease susceptibility across amphibian populations may be influenced by immunosuppression caused by chronic stress imposed by environmental factors. Here, we use a non-invasive water-borne hormone technique to assess stress levels (corticosterone) of free-living tadpole populations that are infected by Bd. We found that corticosterone release rates were higher in infected populations of two species of tadpoles (Alytes obstetricans and A. muletensis) than in an uninfected population for both species. The relationship between corticosterone and the intensity of infection differed between species, with only the infected A. obstetricans population showing a significant positive correlation. The higher corticosterone release rates found in A. obstetricans may be an outcome of infection by a highly virulent lineage of Bd (BdGPL), whereas A. muletensis is infected with a less virulent lineage (BdCAPE). These results suggest that different lineages of Bd impose different levels of stress on the infected animals, and that this may influence survival. The next step is to determine whether higher corticosterone levels make individuals more susceptible to Bd or if Bd infections drive the higher corticosterone levels.  相似文献

Zoological parks are playing an increasingly important role in the management of threatened species through education, the maintenance of captive gene banks and the reintroduction of captive-bred animals into the wild. This paper discusses the suitability of amphibian species for reintroduction. The important features of amphibians for these programmes are highlighted, i.e., their high fecundity to allow rapid build-up of captive populations coupled with few behavioural problems with captive-bred animals, as well as the low cost of maintenance. The potential problems of inbreeding, poor retention of innate behavioural repertoires after multiple generation captive breeding, and the introduction of alien pathogens into wild populations are considered. Release programmes for two species, the Mallorcan midwife toad Alytes muletensis and the Puerto Rican crested toad Peltophryne lemur, are reviewed.  相似文献

Few studies have examined the role hormones play in mediating clinical changes associated with infection by the parasite Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). Glucocorticoid (GC) hormones such as corticosteroids (CORT) regulate homeostasis and likely play a key role in response to infection in amphibians. We explore the relationship between CORT release rates and Bd infection in tadpoles of the common midwife toad, Alytes obstetricians, using a non-invasive water-borne hormone collection method across seven populations. We further examined whether tadpoles of A. muletensis infected with a hypervirulent lineage of Bd, BdGPL, had greater CORT release rates than those infected with a hypovirulent lineage, BdCAPE. Finally, we examined the relationship between righting reflex and CORT release rates in infected metamorphic toads of A. obstetricans. We found an interaction between elevation and Bd infection status confirming that altitude is associated with the overall severity of infection. In tandem, increasing elevation was associated with increasing CORT release rates. Tadpoles infected with the hypervirulent BdGPL had significantly higher CORT release rates than tadpoles infected with BdCAPE showing that more aggressive infections lead to increased CORT release rates. Infected metamorphs with higher CORT levels had an impaired righting reflex, our defined experimental endpoint. These results provide evidence that CORT is associated with an amphibian’s vulnerability to Bd infection, and that CORT is also affected by the aggressiveness of infection by Bd. Together these results indicate that CORT is a viable biomarker of amphibian stress.  相似文献

The apoplastic fluids of field-grown Zea mays and Zea luxurians plants were isolated from surface sterilized stem tissue by centrifugation and spread on agar plates containing a nitrogen-free, defined medium. The predominant bacterium isolated from these plates was characterized further. The ability of this bacterium to fix nitrogen was confirmed by its ability to grow on a semi-solid, nitrogen-free medium and reduce 15N2 to 15NH3 and acetylene to ethylene. Protions of the nifH and 16S rRNA genes from this organism were amplified by PCR and sequenced. The nifH gene, which codes for dinitrogenase reductase, from this organism is closely related to nifH from Klebsiella pneumoniae. Similarly, the 16S rRNA gene sequences and carbon utilization tests grouped it closely with K. pneumoniae. Based an these data, the isolates from Z. mays and Z. luxurians are tentatively classified as Klebsiella spp. (Zea). The ability of this bacterium to contribute to the nitrogen economy of the corn plant is unknown.  相似文献

Spirotrichonymphea is a class of hypermastigote parabasalids defined by their spiral rows of many flagella. They are obligate hindgut symbionts of lower termites. Despite more than 100 yr of morphological and ultrastructural study, the group remains poorly characterised by molecular data and the phylogenetic positions and taxonomic validity of most genera remain in question. The genus Spirotrichonympha has been reported to inhabit several termite genera, including Reticulitermes, Coptotermes, and Hodotermopsis. The type species for this genus, Spirotrichonympha flagellata, was described from Reticulitermes lucifugus but no molecular data are yet available for this species. In this study, three new Spirotrichonympha species are described from three species of Reticulitermes. Their molecular phylogenetic position indicates that the genus is not monophyletic, as Spirotrichonympha species from Coptotermes, Paraneotermes, and Hodotermopsis branch separately. In contrast, the genus Holomastigotoides is monophyletic, as demonstrated using new sequences from Holomastigotoides species. The presence of Holomastigotoides in Prorhinotermes and the distinct phylogenetic positions of Spirotrichonympha from Reticulitermes and Coptotermes are consistent with a previously proposed symbiont fauna replacement in the ancestor of Reticulitermes.  相似文献

The purification of the milk clotting enzyme from Mucor pusillus Lindt could be achieved by column chromatography on Amberlite IRC-50 by raising pH from 3.5 to 4.5 and about 70% of activity was recovered after this treatment. After the treatment through the column of DEAE-Sephadex A-25, the trace cellulase activity could be eliminated.

The homogeneity of the purified preparation was proved by ultracentrifugal analysis and electrophoretic patterns at various pH values.

Isoelectric point of this enzyme is considered to lie between pH 3.5 and 3.8.

The enzyme activity was inhibited by Hg++ or Fe+++.

Trypsinogenkinase activity was not contained in this enzyme.

The antiserum against the milk clotting enzyme from Mucor pusillus reacted with the purified and crude enzyme preparations in precipitin test and inhibited their enzyme activities, but did not react with other enzymes such as rennin, pepsin, acid proteases from Aspergillus saitoi and Aspergillus oryzae, or the culture filtrates of some strains of Mucor and Rhizopus.

The antigen-antibody reaction was so specific that it might be possible with this antibody to identify this enzyme and also the strain itself.

Normal sera from some mammals inhibited this enzyme activity too, but the degree was less than that with rennin.  相似文献

The small green flagellate symbiotic in the Noctiluca miliaris Suriray from Southeast Asia has been examined by light and electron microscopy. The flagellate is very similar to Pedinomonas minor Korschikoff. The deeper flagellar depression and the habitat distinguish this species of Pedinomonas from P. minor. It is not a euglenoid as originally proposed, since it contains starch. Characters distinguishing it from Micromonas are described. The new combination Pedinomonas noctilucae (Subrahmanyan) comb, nov. is proposed for this flagellate.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to analyze the distribution and phenotypic properties of the indigenous streptococci in chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) oral cavities. Eleven chimpanzees (aged from 9 to 44 years, mean ± SD, 26.9 ± 12.6 years) in the Primate Research Institute of Kyoto University were enrolled in this research and brushing bacterial samples collected from them. Streptococci were isolated from the oral cavities of all chimpanzees. The isolates (n = 46) were identified as thirteen species by 16S rRNA genes analysis. The predominant species was Streptococcus sanguinis of mitis streptococci from five chimpanzees (45%). Mutans streptococci were isolated from six chimpanzees (55%). The predominant species in the mutans streptococci were Streptococcus troglodytae from four chimpanzees (36%), this species having been proposed as a novel species by us, and Streptococcus dentirousetti from three chimpanzees (27%). Streptococcus mutans was isolated from one chimpanzee (9%). However, Streptococcus sobrinus, Streptococcus macacae and Streptococcus downei, which are indigenous to human and monkey (Macaca fasciclaris) oral habitats, were not isolated. Of the mutans streptococci, S. troglodytae, S. dentirousetti, and S. mutans possessed strong adherence activity to glass surface.  相似文献

In Japan, a Mycobacterium marinum‐like mycobacterium was isolated from the yellowtail, Seriola quinqueradiata. The species was identified as M. marinum by a commercial mycobacterial DNA‐DNA hybridization kit. Nevertheless, PCR restriction analysis of the DNA of its RNA polymerase β‐subunit gene definitively showed that this Mycobacterium sp. was M. ulcerans. PCR analysis revealed the genotypic characteristics of M. ulcerans in the Mycobacterium sp., only the mup053 gene sequence being absent, as has been found previously in other piscine mycobacteria such as M. marinum strains DL240490 and DL045 and M. pseudoshottsii. With one exception, this Mycobacterium sp. and M. pseudoshottsii had identical 16S rRNA gene sequences, which is also probably true of M. marinum strains DL240490 and DL045. Similarly, according to comparisons of the 16S rRNA gene, ITS region, and hsp65 gene sequences, this Mycobacterium sp. is more closely related to M. pseudoshottsii than to M. ulcerans or M. marinum. A PCR product of approximately 2000 bp was amplified from region of difference 9 in the Mycobacterium sp. The nucleotide sequence revealed insertion of IS2404, the sequence of which is 1366 bp long. The novel single nucleotide polymorphisms identified in this region distinguished this Mycobacterium sp. from M. marinum strain DL240490 and M. pseudoshottsii. The present findings raise the possibility that these species have a common ancestor. Further studies are required to improve our understanding of the relationship between their geographical origin and genetic diversity.  相似文献

Non-spore-forming bacteria of the genera Arthrobacterand Micrococcus, isolated from permafrost subsoil, were found to produce greater amounts of the d 1extracellular factor than closely related collection strains isolated from soil. The effect of this factor, responsible for cell transition to anabiosis, was not species-specific. Thus, the d 1preparation isolated from the culture liquid of the permafrost isolate Arthrobacter globiformis245 produced an effect on the collection strain Arthrobacter globiformisB-1112 and also on Micrococcus luteusand Bacillus cereus.The d 1preparation from the permafrost isolate of Arthrobacterdiffered from the chemical analogue of this factor, 4-n-hexylresorcinol, in the level of the induced cell response, which may have resulted from different cell sensitivity to various homologs of alkylhydroxybenzenes contained in the d 1preparation. Thus, additional evidence was obtained indicating that autoregulation of bacterial growth and development is implemented at the level of intercellular interactions in microbial communities. Abundant production of the d 1anabiosis-inducing factors by bacteria isolated from permafrost subsoil is probably a result of special antistress mechanisms responsible for the survival of these bacteria under extreme conditions of natural long-term cooling.  相似文献

Complete cytochrome b gene sequences from all but one species of delphinid plus four outgroups were analyzed using parsimony, maximum likelihood, and neighbor-joining methods. The results indicate the need for systematic revision of the family; a provisional classification is presented and compared to previous studies. Among the suggested revisions are removal of Orcinus from the Globicephalinae, placement of Grampus within the Globicephalinae, removal of all Lagenorhynchus spp. from the Delphininae, and placement of Sousa in the Delphininae. The genus Lagenorhynchus is found to be polyphyletic. L. albirostris (type species for the genus) and L. acutus are not closely related to each other or to nominal congeners. L. acutus is therefore assigned to the genus Leucopleurus. The remaining four Lagenorhynchus species are closely related to Lissodelphis and Cephalorbynchus and are placed in the genus Sagmatias. These three genera constitute the revised Lissodelphininae. Within the Delphininae, a well-supported clade includes the two species of Delphinus, Stenella clymene, S. frontalis, S. coeruleoalba, and the aduncus form of Tursiops truncatus. Accepting the monophyly of this group renders the genera Stenella and Tursiops polyphyletic. Apart from this finding, phylogenetic resolution within the Delphininae was poor, so comprehensive taxonomic revision of this group awaits further study.  相似文献

The presence of the micropia retroelement from the Ty1-copia family of LTR retroelements was investigated in three species of the Drosophila cardini group. Southern blot analysis suggested the existence of at least four micropia copies in the genomes of D. cardinoides, D. neocardini and D. polymorpha populations. The high sequence similarity between dhMiF2 and Dm11 clones (micropia retroelements isolated from D. hydei and D. melanogaster, respectively) with micropia sequences amplified from D. cardini group genome supports the hypothesis that this retroelement plays an active role in horizontal transfer events between D. hydei and the D. cardini group. Several medusa species have been described from inland waters in Australia, Eurasia, Africa and America. The chief objective of this study is to summarize all species described from freshwater and from saline lakes, because the knowledge about this group is sparse and scattered in the literature. I summarize all accessible literature to deduct how many species of freshwater medusae exist and to show their distribution, relation and their phylogenetic origin.All medusae described from freshwater except Halmomises are Olindiidae (Limnomedusae). More than 20 Olindiidae species (in 6 genera) have been recorded from freshwater. However, about half of them may not be valid species or have been described insufficiently or improperly. Within the genera Craspedacusta only 3 (or 5) species are certain (C. sowerbii, C. iseanum, C. sinensis (and maybe C. sichuanensis and C. ziguiensis)). The genera Limnocnida may consist of 6 species, three from Africa (L. tanganjicae, L. victoriae, L. congoensis) and 3 from India (L. indica, L. biharensis, L. nepalensis). The status of Astrohydra (from Japan), Mansariella and Keralika (both from India) is uncertain. Additionally, the present study suggests that Craspedacusta and at least one type of Calpasoma hydrants are identical and Astrohydra may be closely related to Craspedacusta and/or Calpasoma.A comparison of the freshwater medusae with species described from saline lakes and brackish sites (Australomedusae from Australia and Moerisia from Egypt, Black Sea, Caspian Sea and Ganges Estuary) shows that these two groups are not closely related.  相似文献

The raccoon (Nyctereutes procyonoides) is described as a host of the dog biting louse, Trichodectes canis (De Geer, 1778). The present note reports the occurrence of this species of louse on two raccoon dogs from Moravia and Bohemia. The specimens of T. canis collected on this host differed from T. canis originating from the domestic dog by body size only.  相似文献

A pure, active cytochrome b 6 f was isolated from the chloroplasts of the marine green alga, Bryopsis corticulans. To investigate and characterize this cytochrome b 6 f complex, sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS–PAGE), absorption spectra measurement and HPLC were employed. It was shown that this purified complex contained four large subunits with apparent molecular masses of 34.8, 24, 18.7 and 16.7 kD. The ratio of Cyt b 6 to Cytf was 2.01 : 1. The cytochromeb 6 f was shown to catalyze the transfer of 73 electrons from decylplastoquinol to plastocyanin–ferricyanide per Cyt f per second. α-Carotene, one kind of carotenoid that has not been found to present in cytochrome b 6 f complex, was discovered in this preparation by reversed phase HPLC. It was different from β-carotene usually found in cytochrome b 6 f complex. The configuration of the major α-carotene component was assigned to be 9-cis by resonance Raman spectroscopy. Different from the previous reports, the configuration of this α-carotene in dissociated state was determined to be all-trans. Besides this carotene, chlorophyll a was also found in this complex. It was shown that the molecular ratios of chlorophylla, cis and all-trans-α-carotene to Cyt f in this complex were 1.2, 0.7 and 0.2, respectively.  相似文献
