Archived data from a long-term (1973–1988) monitoring study were used to assess the impacts of kraft mill effluents (KME) on fish community dynamics in Elevenmile Creek, a small blackwater stream located in Cantonment, Florida, compared to a neighboring stream, Black Creek, that did not receive KME. The fish community in Elevenmile Creek was generally lower in species richness and diversity than the reference stream. The exception was the mill outfall site, which had similar species richness and diversity to the reference stream. Neither species richness nor diversity changed substantially during the survey period in either stream. Throughout the survey, Elevenmile Creek was numerically dominated by bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus, and eastern mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis. Black Creek had greater abundances of minnows, suckers, and darters. Time series analysis of L. macrochirus for Elevenmile Creek showed that this species was more abundant during winter than summer, but no overall long-term trend was found. Although data used in this study may not be representative of the fish community in Elevenmile Creek as it exists today, results suggest that Elevenmile Creek was highly disturbed during the survey and that species diversity did not increase following mill treatment upgrades.  相似文献

Phytoplankton distribution and abundance in eleven tributaries of the Colorado River within the Grand Canyon were investigated from April, 1975 to June, 1976. During this period a total of 56 genera and 156 species of phytoplankton was identified. Phytoplankton species of the individual tributaries were quite distinct, with only four diatom species, Diatoma vulgare, Navicula tripunctata, Nitzschia linearis and Synedra ulna, common to all the tributaries. Bright Angel Creek, Shinumo Creek and Elves Chasm were the tributaries with the most diverse algal flora, whereas Vaseys Paradise, Tapeats Creek, Deer Creek and Havasu Creek showed the lowest species richness. Elves Chasm and Diamond Creek had the highest phytoplankton numbers. Phytoplankton abundance and species richness appeared to be influenced by high turbidity, current velocity, fluctuating water levels and age of the water. Some of the dominant algal species, Biddulphia laevis, Cocconeis pediculus, Cymbella ventricosa, Epithemia sorex, Gomphonema parvulum and Synedra ulna, showed significant correlations with specific physico-chemical characteristics of the tributaries.Grand Canyon National Park Colorado River Research Series Contribution No. 66. We investigated the effects of different environmental factors on the distribution and abundance of 6 species of dasyurid marsupials using a multiple‐scale analysis. Data collected in the spinifex dunefields of the Simpson Desert, Australia, were analysed at 3 spatial scales spanning more than 5 orders of magnitude: “metasite” (covering an area of 1000–2000 km2), site (2–12 km2) and grid (0.01 km2). Temporal variability was also investigated, using data collected in March, April, and May in 4 consecutive years from 1997 to 2000. Both abiotic and biotic factors influenced the capture rates of different species at different times and spatial scales. At the coarsest spatial scale, Dasycercus cristicauda (mulgara) was consistently limited in its distribution by the intensity of rainfall, probably as an indirect result of increased grazing pressure from pastoral activity and a higher density of feral predators in high rainfall areas. However, at the finest spatial scale, this partly carnivorous species was scarce in areas of dense spinifex, perhaps because such habitats yield lowest returns during foraging, and was more common in areas where small invertebrate prey were abundant. Factors affecting the distribution of the most abundant dasyurid species in the study area, Sminthopsis youngsoni (lesser hairy‐footed dunnart), could not be identified at any scale; we conclude that this reflects the opportunistic foraging strategies and flexible habitat requirements of this insectivorous species. Both Ningaui ridei (wongai ningaui) and Sminthopsis hirtipes (hairy‐footed dunnart) were less abundant throughout the study region. For N. ridei, a spinifex specialist, predictors of occurrence could be identified only at the finest scale of analysis; at the grid level, a close positive association was detected in 2 of the 4 study years between capture rate and spinifex cover. For S. hirtipes, all 3 levels of spatial analysis revealed a negative association between capture rate and both rainfall and spinifex density. For the rarely‐caught S. crassicaudata (fat‐tailed dunnart) and Planigale tenuirostris (narrow‐nosed planigale), no clear results were obtained at any spatial scale, and we interpret this to indicate that the study region represents sub‐optimal habitat for these species. Given that different factors affected the distribution and abundance of dasyurids at different spatial scales over time, we conclude that a multiple‐scale approach to population and community analysis is vital to accurately identify which environmental processes shape population and community dynamics. Understanding the interplay between regional and local processes will be crucial for management of existing species populations and for prediction of their distributions and abundances in future.  相似文献

The Julia Creek dunnart (Sminthopsis douglasi) is an endangered carnivorous marsupial belonging to the family Dasyuridae. This study investigated the oestrous cycle of this species in terms of its reproductive physiology and behaviour to explore more efficient methods of oestrus detection. Ten sexually mature captive female dunnarts were monitored daily at David Fleay Wildlife Park, Burleigh Heads, Australia, from mid September to late December 2006 for changes in urogenital cytology within the urine (0, 1+, 2+ and 3+), running wheel activity, body weight, uneaten food, faecal steroid metabolites (progesterone and oestradiol) and pouch development. Periods of increased running wheel activity were associated (p = 0.004) with an increase in the proportion of cornified urogenital epithelial cells found in the urine; periods of decreasing weight (p < 0.001) and uneaten food (p < 0.001) were also associated with changes in urogenital cytology but not to the point where they would be useful for oestrus detection. Between 60.3% and 92.0% of peak distances (confidence interval 95%) occurred when the epithelial cell index was 2+ or 3+. Only 15.5–37.5% of peak weights (CI: 95%) and 28.1–49.9% of incidences of uneaten food (CI: 95%) occurred when the epithelial cell index was 2+ or 3+. There was no significant difference in the mean length of the oestrous cycle when measured by urogenital cytology (mean ± SD: 25.0 ± 5.7 days; n = 20) or peak distance travelled (mean ± SD: 25.4 ± 5.7 days; n = 20). Changes in the concentration of oestradiol metabolites in Julia Creek Dunnart faeces were not useful in characterising the oestrous cycle. Wheel running activity declined markedly with increased faecal progestagen concentration. The majority of the pouch variables examined showed maximum development during the inter-oestrus period but as there was considerable variation between animals, the pouch was not considered a useful index of oestrus.  相似文献

Genetic variation within the macroura species group, which includes Sminthopsis macroura, S. virginiae, S. douglasi, and S. bindi, was examined through analyses of complete mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene sequences, partial control-region DNA sequences, and allozymes. Divergent genetic lineages appear to be present within S. macroura and S. virginiae, and it is likely that this genetic divergence equates to currently unrecognized taxonomic diversity. Specimens of S. macroura (as currently recognized) belong to three genetically distinct lineages that are highly divergent from one another. Two of these lineages may be synonymous with two previously recognized dunnart species—S. froggatti and S. stalkeri. The third appears to represent "true" S. macroura and is itself genetically heterogeneous, with a number of subgroups present within it that may also represent currently unrecognized taxa. The mitochondrial DNA sequence divergences observed between S. virginiae nitela and the two other S. virginiaesubspecies are equivalent to, or greater than, those noted between other dunnart species. Allozyme divergences between these subspecies were however slightly lower, and determination on whether S. virginiae nitela should be returned to full species status (S. nitela) may require further evidence. Phylogenetic relationships between species in the macroura group appear to have been partially resolved, with individual 12S rRNA and combined mitochondrial DNA analyses recovering S. bindi as the earliest diverging taxon. Other relationships between species in the group were either not consistently recovered or lacked strong support.  相似文献

Lynx Creek, a small intermittent creek in the Bradshaw Mountains of Arizona, is subjected to drainage from an abandoned copper mine. The mine-drainage decreases the pH of the Creek about three units and greatly increases sulfate and heavy metal concentrations. Chemical recovery of the Creek occurs downstream through precipitation of metal hydroxides and dilution by tributaries. Changes in Creek chemistry are accompanied by changes in algal flora. Above the mine and downstream after substantial recovery, the flora is dominated by Tribonema affine4, Achnanthes spp., and Synedra ulna and several zygnematacean species. In the mine seep entering the Creek and in the Creek just below the seep the flora is reduced in species richness and dominated in abundance by Microthamnion kuetzingianum and Eunotia tenella.  相似文献

A new combination, Hiraea knowltoni (Berry), is proposed. Additional synonymies, Incertae Sedis, and other taxonomic changes are included. The Trout Creek flora is to the west of Sucker Creek in Harney County, southeastern Oregon. The fossils are preserved in diatomite. Four new species are described: Equisetum miocenicum, Gossypium arnoldii, Urena miocenica, and Spiraea miocenica. New combinations are Pteridium calabazensis (Dorf), and Nymphaea rotunda (Arnold). A revised species list is given for the 2 floras. The Sucker Creek flora contains 47 families, 60 genera, and 69 species, presently identified. The Trout Creek flora contains 29 families, 51 genera, and 75 species. The distributional, ecologic, and geologic interpretations of the 2 floras will be presented in a subsequent publication.  相似文献

The Response of Three Bacterial Populations to Pollution in a Stream   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Abstract Practical methods for biomonitoring of natural systems are still under development. Bacteria are potentially useful indicators of water quality because of their species diversity and ability to rapidly respond to changing environmental conditions. In this study, bacterial populations from unpolluted and polluted stream sites in two watersheds were compared to determine their suitability for use as environmental indicators. Upper Three Runs Creek and Four Mile Creek headwaters have had little anthropogenic disturbance, as opposed to lower Four Mile Creek which received thermal, radioactive, and chemical perturbations. Chemical and physical measurements provided evidence that seepage from holding ponds polluted Four Mile Creek. Polluted sites did not have altered total bacterial numbers but had decreased numbers of colony-forming units. Abundances of three bacterial species, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, Burkholderia cepacia, and Pseudomonas putida, were determined by colony hybridization with species-specific rDNA probes. Contribution of A. calcoaceticus to the assemblage was higher at polluted sites, which indicated either tolerance of polluted conditions or the ability to utilize compounds existing at these sites to reach larger populations. No differences in B. cepacia populations were detected, and differences in P. putida populations could not be attributed solely to disturbance. The pollution of Four Mile Creek induced differences in bacterial populations that could be monitored using the described approach. Received: 24 September 1996; Accepted: 20 December 1996  相似文献

The Nashville crayfish (Faxonius shoupi, Hobbs 1948) was federally listed as an endangered species in 1986 due to its limited distribution in the Mill Creek watershed; this waterway lies in the rapidly developing Nashville basin and has experienced habitat degradation due to agricultural run-off, contamination, and urban development. Recovery efforts, including dam removal and restoration of riparian zones, have improved conditions in Mill Creek and F. shoupi has increased in numbers and recolonized extirpated stream segments. However, a history of demographic bottlenecks and restricted gene flow may have negatively impacted the long-term recovery of this species. A recently discovered population of F. shoupi in a disjunct segment of the Lower Tennessee River at the Pickwick Tailwater may provide an additional source of genetic variation. Uncertainty surrounding the origins of the Pickwick population and its taxonomic relationship to F. shoupi in Mill Creek raises questions about the conservation and management implications of this population. We used mitochondrial sequencing and SNP genotyping to assess genetic variation and connectivity of F. shoupi in the Mill Creek drainage and to investigate the taxonomy and demographic history of the newly discovered population at Pickwick. We found substantial genetic variation and evidence of connectivity for samples throughout Mill Creek for both mitochondrial and genome-wide SNPs. Our results also suggest a recently severed connection between crayfish in Pickwick and Mill Creek. Unique mitochondrial haplotypes and SNP variation in the Pickwick population highlight the need for prioritizing this population in future conservation and management plans for this species.

1. Allozyme electrophoresis was used to describe the genetic structure of Helicopsyche borealis caddisflies collected from three sites in each of three streams in northern California, U.S.A.: the Rice Fork of the Eel River; Big Sulphur Creek; and Alameda Creek. Between 7 and 11km separated adjacent sites within these three streams. Helicopsyche borealis from three additional streams in eastern North America (Christiana Creek, Indiana; Byrd's Mill Creek, Oklahoma; Susquehanna River, Pennsylvania) were also analysed electrophoretically to address taxonomic questions that arose during the study. 2. Four genetically distinct groups of individuals were identified (i.e. Helicopsyche types A, B, C, and D). Lack of interbreeding between sympatric groups (as evidenced by fixed allelic differences) and large genetic differences (mean Nei's genetic distances = 0.396–0.693) indicate that these four groups of Helicopsyche were actually reproductively isolated species rather than genetic variants of a single species. 3. Occurrence of Helicopsyche type A at multiple sites permitted an analysis of spatial variation in genetic structure. Within a drainage basin, small differences in allele frequencies were observed among sites in the Rice Fork and Big Sulphur Creek, but not in Alameda Creek. Larger genetic differences were found among sites in separate drainage basins. Genetic distances (Nei's) between Helicopsyche type A from California and from eastern North America sites (mean = 0.236) were greater than interpopulation differences commonly observed for insects, which suggests that Helicopsyche type A from California may represent a different species than Helicopsyche type A from eastern North America. 4. Geographical and taxonomic differences observed in this study underscore the importance of understanding both population structure and genetic relationships among populations in the design and interpretation of stream faunal studies.  相似文献

Marsupials are born with immature lungs when compared to eutherian mammals and rely, to various extents, on cutaneous gas exchange in order to meet metabolic requirements. Indeed, the fat-tailed dunnart is born with lungs in the canalicular stage of development and relies almost entirely on the skin for gas exchange at birth; consequently undergoing the majority of lung development in air. Plane radiographs and computed tomography data sets were acquired using phase contrast imaging with a synchrotron radiation source for two marsupial species, the fat-tailed dunnart and the larger tammar wallaby, during the first weeks of postnatal life. Phase contrast imaging revealed that only two lung sacs contain air after the first hour of life in the fat-tailed dunnart. While the lung of the tammar wallaby was comparatively more developed, both species demonstrated massive increases in air sac number and architectural complexity during the postnatal period. In addition, both the tammar wallaby and fat-tailed dunnart had lower lung volumes and parenchymal surface areas than were expected from morphometrically determined allometric equations relating these variables to body mass during the neonatal period. However, lung volume is predicted to scale with mass as expected after the neonatal marsupial reaches a body mass of ∼1 g and no longer relies on the skin for gas exchange. Decreased lung volume in the marsupial neonate further supports the maxim that cutaneous gas exchange occurs in the marsupial neonate because the respiratory apparatus is not yet capable of meeting the gas exchange requirements of the newborn.  相似文献

Uniquely for non-primate mammals, three classes of cone photoreceptors have been previously identified by microspectrophotometry in two marsupial species: the polyprotodont fat-tailed dunnart (Sminthopsis crassicaudata) and the diprotodont honey possum (Tarsipes rostratus). This report focuses on the genetic basis for these three pigments. Two cone pigments were amplified from retinal cDNA of both species and identified by phylogenetics as members of the short wavelength-sensitive 1 (SWS1) and long wavelength-sensitive (LWS) opsin classes. In vitro expression of the two sequences from the fat-tailed dunnart confirmed the peak absorbances at 363 nm in the UV for the SWS1 pigment and 533 nm for the LWS pigment. No additional expressed cone opsin sequences that could account for the middle wavelength cones could be amplified. However, amplification from the fat-tailed dunnart genomic DNA with RH1 (rod) opsin primer pairs identified two genes with identical coding regions but sequence differences in introns 2 and 3. Uniquely therefore for a mammal, the fat-tailed dunnart has two copies of an RH1 opsin gene. This raises the possibility that the middle wavelength cones express a rod rather than a cone pigment.  相似文献

Elaeocarpus grandis (Blue Quandong) is a common rainforest tree with a widespread distribution across northeastern Australia, while the related species E. sp. Rocky Creek and E. williamsianus are more restricted in their distribution. Highly polymorphic markers are required to provide genetic information on these species, which will aid in developing effective conservation and management strategies. Eight microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized in E. grandis, and tested in the rare species and other species of the Elaeocarpaceae. Cross‐species transferability was most successful within Elaeocarpus, with six and eight loci transferring to E. sp. Rocky Creek and E. williamsianus, respectively.  相似文献

A test of Allan's (1978) hypothesis about differential drift abundance of mayflies of the genus Baetis between night and day, and the size of larvae was performed at a mountain stream in Idaho. Palisades Creek, Idaho, contains a different species of mayfly, B. tricaudatus, and vertebrate predator, Salmo clarki, than Cement Creek, Colorado (B. bicaudatus, and brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis). Consequently it was not known if B. tricaudatus would exhibit a similar pattern as its congener in Cement Creek, with large instars tending to avoid daylight drift, as found by Allan (1978). However, similar results were observed in the present study. It appears that the earlier hypothesis may have generality for geographically distinct streams with a different vertebrate predator and mayfly prey. The existence of a similar pattern for chironomid larvae was also tested, however, no such pattern existed. This discrepency between taxa may be due to differential predation, or to inherent differences in drift abilities.  相似文献

Influence of disturbance on insect communities in Pacific Northwest streams   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Coniferous forests of the Pacific Northwest provide a unique setting for stream ecology research because of the great age of the forests and the important role of wood debris in structuring aquatic systems. The composition and diversity of the insect community in Mack Creek, a stream in a 450 yr conifer forest, was compared with that in Grasshopper Creek where it flowed through a recent clearcut, and at Quartz Creek, which had a 40 yr deciduous canopy. Of the 256 taxa identified, Mack Creek had the highest species richness (196) and evenness. The open site had 191 taxa but high dominance of a few grazer taxa. The deciduous-canopy site had 165 taxa with abundant detritivores. Despite differences in density, the biomass of emergence was similar at the three sites, ranging from 1.53 to 1.65 g m–2 yr–1.The importance of disturbance in structuring stream communities was demonstrated in phenomenological studies after a debris torrent at Quartz Creek, and by monitoring stream recovery following the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in 1980. At Quartz Creek, the debris torrent eliminated the fauna from a 300 m reach, but there was rapid recovery. Emergence density in the same year was similar to that of the control site. The major shift in populations was a decrease in detritivores and moss associates and an increase in grazers, especially Baetis mayflies. At Ape Creek on Mt. St. Helens, over 200 taxa were recorded by 1987 but most occurred in very low densities. This site is reset by winter freshets and by infilling with glacial fines in the summer so the fauna continues to be dominated by weedy, or early successional species. At Clearwater Creek, the presence of wood debris as a stable substrate and limited inputs of fine sediment after 1980 have hastened population recovery. A decade after the eruption this site can be characterized as being in the mid-stages of succession with high insect productivity from an algal-based food web. With further growth of the riparian vegetation I predict a shift towards a detritus-based food web and fauna more similar to Mack Creek than it is at present.  相似文献

In order to evaluate single-occasion sampling in compiling inventories for Odonata, larvae were sampled on 20 occasions from 1987–1990 at a site on Middle Creek, north-eastern Victoria, and adults sought also on each visit to more fully evaluate the diversity of the asemblage, and limitations of depending on a single life stage for this purpose. A total of 18 species (7 Zygoptera, 11 Anisoptera) included 15 species collected as larvae and 16 as adults. Few species were common as larvae, and about half the 2806 specimens identified were Austrogomphus cornutus Watson. Orthetrum caledonicum (Brauer) and Ischnura heterosticta (Burmeister) were also abundant, and these three species were also the most common as adults. The number of species obtained ranged from 2–9 on different occasions, and represent different 'habitat groups' within the local fauna. The Middle Creek odonate fauna appears to be much richer than that of a nearby site on the Kiewa River (12 species), and reasons for this are discussed. Seasonal variation in species representation and relative abundances are noted. Any single sample occasion provided insufficient knowledge of the total assemblage to interpret odonate diversity reliably.  相似文献

We examined long-term ecological change in two Hudson River tributaries, the Wappinger and Fishkill Creek watersheds in Dutchess County, New York State. Fish data spanning 65 years (1936, 1988, 1992, and 2001) and shorter term macroinvertebrate data (1988, 2001) were used to assess the influence of land use practices. Between 1988 and 2001, macroinvertebrate index Biotic Assessment Profile (BAP) improved by 113–165% in the Fishkill Creek watershed, and fish Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) improved by 117–140%. Fish IBI and fish species richness were significantly different (p < 0.01) between the watersheds, with Wappinger Creek in better condition. Long-term fish IBI scores showed degradation in both watersheds since the 1930s. Changes in species composition suggest community homogenization on par with overall changes in the fish fauna of New York. Most notable were increases in tolerant species and declines in intolerant or moderately tolerant species. Whereas Fishkill Creek IBIs showed decline in 1988 relative to 1936, followed by improvement, Wappinger Creek declined monotonically in environmental quality. Development has intensified in both watersheds, but Fishkill Creek is improving while Wappinger Creek watershed is undergoing less mitigated degradation. We find that older, semi-quantitative data can be used to construct environmental quality indicators, and can be of great use for measuring long-term change.  相似文献

The Hackensack Meadowlands District is a large heavily degraded, brackish marsh system in the urbanized northeastern region of New Jersey, USA. Six study sites were used, three of which were restored (Mill Creek, Skeetkill Creek and Vince Lombardi), and three others were unrestored (Richard DeKorte Park, Cedar Creek and Kingsland Creek). Highly significant differences were found with respect to snail abundance and gill parasite abundance. In the three restored sites, significantly more Littoridinops tenuipes were found, and Fundulus heteroclitus had significantly more digenean trematode metacercariae gill infections than at unrestored sites. As habitat quality improves following restoration, the number of suitable digenean trematode parasite hosts multiplies as substrate for benthic invertebrates (first intermediate host) increases and usage by other species, such as Fundulus spp. (second intermediate host), is encouraged, which then attracts more wading birds (definitive host). Though the restoration process enhances trophic complexity, including primary consumers (gastropods), secondary consumers (fish) and tertiary consumers (wading birds), and ultimately parasite diversity, restoration also helps facilitate parasite life cycles.  相似文献

Fungi associated with crown rotting were isolated from 3 year-old lucerne plants growing in sandy and loam soils in an irrigated stand, declining in productivity, at Langhorne Creek, South Australia. The method of isolation markedly affected the range of species recovered. Fusarium spp. and Phomopsis sp. were isolated from washed and surface sterilized crowns, whereas a larger range of fungi, especially Acrocalymma medicaginis, was isolated from unwashed crowns. A. medicaginis was most frequently isolated from rotted tissue flecked with red, while a species of Phomopsis was the dominant fungus in whitish tissue containing zone lines, especially in crown branches. A. medicaginis and Phomopsis sp. caused crown rotting of mature, wounded lucerne plants at temperatures equivalent to summer conditions at Langhorne Creek. There was no evidence that Fusarium oxysporum or F. solani, two of the most frequently isolated species, were pathogens of mature lucerne plants.  相似文献

During the early stages of oogenesis, oocyte-specific factors, synthesized by and stored within the oocyte, play critical roles during oogenesis, folliculogenesis, fertilization and early embryonic development in the mouse. The identification of marsupial maternal factors, expressed specifically in the ovary or oocyte, may provide an insight into the conserved evolutionary mechanisms that drive mammalian oocyte development to cleavage stages. In this study, 10 clones including dunnart ZP2 and c-mos, isolated by cDNA representational difference analysis, were validated by RT-PCR for ovary-specific expression. This novel combination of techniques to isolate ovary-specific genes has identified three novel genes with ovary-specific expression. Both dunnart ZP2 and c-mos exhibited ovary-specific expression, making this study the first isolation of c-mos in a marsupial species. Dunnart ZP2 expression was examined in detail by in situ hybridization and results indicate oocyte-specific expression of dunnart ZP2 in the cytoplasm of oocytes of primordial, primary and secondary follicles with expression being highest in oocytes of primary follicles. ZP2 was not expressed in granulosa cells of any follicles.  相似文献
