The purpose of the current research was to determine the impact of various biochar supplements on nutrient digestibility and growth performance of Catla catla fingerlings fed on Moringa oleifera seed meal (MOSM) based diet. An experiment with 90 days of feeding was conducted to investigate the efficacy of biochar obtained from different sources such as parthenium, farmyard manure, poultry waste, vegetable waste, and corncob waste at 2 mg/kg. There were15 fingerlings in each tank in the triplicate set of tanks. Fingerlings were fed at the rate of 5 % of their live wet weight. From each tank, feces were collected twice daily and stored to determine nutrient digestibility. Results showed that poultry waste biochar (test diet-IV) at 2 mg/kg was the best source to significantly (P < 0.05) improve weight gain % (256.58 %) and feed conversion ratio (1.19) than the other biochar sources and control diet. Furthermore, in terms of nutrient digestibility, optimum fat (81.90 %), protein (75.92 %), and gross energy (74.84 kcalg?1) values were obtained by using the same type of biochar (poultry waste). Conclusively, among all the five biochar sources, poultry waste biochar proved to be the best one, improving fish body performance.  相似文献

Mispah form (FAO: Lithosol) soil contaminated with >380 000 mg kg?1 creosote was co-composted with cattle manure and mixed vegetable waste for 19 months. The soil was mixed with wood chips to improve aeration and then mixed with cattle manure or mixed vegetable waste in a ratio of 4:1. Moisture, temperature, pH, ash content, C:N ratios, and the concentrations of creosote in the compost systems were monitored monthly. The concentrations of selected hydrocarbons in the compost systems were determined at the end of composting. Temperature rose to about 45°C in the cattle manure compost within two months of incubation while temperature in the control and vegetable waste remained below 30°C until the fourth month. Creosote concentration was reduced by 17% in the control and by more than 99% in the cattle manure and vegetable waste compost after composting. The rate of reduction in concentration in the mixed vegetable waste compost was initially lower than in the cattle manure compost. The reduction rate became similar in later months with only small differences towards the end of the composting. The concentrations of selected creosote components were reduced by between 96% and 100% after composting. There was no significant difference in reduction in concentration in both compost systems at p 0.05. Microbial activity correlated with reduction in creosote concentration.  相似文献

Global population growth and an increasing demand for meat has driven the intensification of livestock production. On poultry farms, the accumulation of waste such as faeces, carcasses and unsellable eggs creates environmental and health hazards that need to be mitigated. The larvae of the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens; BSFL) offer a potential solution to the problems of waste management on poultry farms. BSFL consume large quantities of organic waste and convert it into larval biomass, which can then be processed for use as livestock feeds or biofuels. This makes BSFL an ideal candidate for value-added waste management on chicken farms. Here, we examined the development and nutrient profile of BSFL given five different diet treatments: poultry feed (control), chicken meat, chicken egg, chicken manure and a mixture of equal parts chicken meat, egg and manure. Chicken meat, egg and mixed diets were all found to be suitable feedstocks for BSFL, but the manure-only treatment was associated with a high failure rate of larval development. Mixing manure with other poultry waste streams ameliorated the negative impacts of manure on BSFL. Larvae reared on chicken meat, egg and the mixed diet had equal or higher mean crude protein (CP) (39.9%, 33.8% and 31.5%, respectively) and crude lipid (CL) contents (30.1%, 29.00% and 28.7%, respectively), compared with BSFL reared exclusively on chicken feed (CP: 30.9%, CL: 23.8%), demonstrating the suitability of these waste-stream diets for the potential animal feed quality of the BSFL. We discuss how BSFL bioconversion could be implemented to address environment management issues on poultry farms.

Black soldier fly is a common and widely distributed saprophagous species that has an excellent potential for being used for biological conversion of organic wastes on an industrial scale. The main goal of the reported study was expanding the list of wastes suitable for utilization by this species. We compared larval growth on cull potatoes, horse manure and cafeteria food waste in 100‐L bins in a greenhouse. We also conducted laboratory experiments to investigate whether black soldier fly larvae are affected by the presence of moxidectin, a common endectocide used to treat an array of domestic animals and readily excreted in faeces, in their food substrates. Feeding on potatoes resulted in slower growth, and the final size of potato‐fed larvae was smaller compared to the larvae fed on cafeteria waste. Nevertheless, potatoes supported substantial biomass accumulation, and could be a valuable option for rearing fly larvae for commercial feed production. Larvae feeding on horse manure gained very little weight and eventually failed to pupate. Moxidectin had a strong negative effect on larval survivorship; however, ca. 30% of larvae reared in the substrate containing a realistic field concentration of moxidectin still survived to adulthood. Our findings confirm that using black soldier fly larvae is a promising technology for recycling organic wastes, including those of plant origin.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of temperature, type of mineral substrate, and type and amount of feed on the growth of Chironomus calligraphus as a subsidy for the production of Chironomus larvae to feed the fish. Egg production was evaluated at 22, 25, and 28?°C on fine (0.074–0.210?mm), or silty sand (0.002–0.250?mm), and no mineral substrate as control. For larval production, 0.10, 0.20, and 0.30?mg/larvae of fish feed, poultry feed, or turkey manure were used as food. The highest number of egg masses was produced when mineral substrates and 25?°C were used, but the higher number of eggs/mass was registered in the control. Therefore, the total number of eggs and hatched larvae produced was the same in the presence or in the absence of mineral substrates (p?>?0.05). The best results for survival and growth were recorded for larvae reared with fish or poultry food. The increase in the amount of feed was correlated with weight gain only for larvae fed with poultry feed, with no reduction in survival.  相似文献

The feeding rate effects were studied on the growth performance of gynogenetic diploid larvae of sterlet Acipenser ruthenus during the first 4 weeks of exogenous feeding. The experimental rearing was conducted from 7 to 38 days post‐hatch (dph) in a circulation system. This was set up in four groups with three replicates (440 individuals/replicate), viz: AC‐control larvae fed Artemia sp., CFC‐control larvae fed compound feed, AG‐gynogenetic larvae fed Artemia sp., and CFG‐gynogenetic larvae fed compound feed. The larvae were reared in glass tanks (44 L volume, 10 individuals/L) with the temperature maintained at 18 ± 0.5°C, photoperiod of 12L:12D and water flow regime of 1‐L/min and fed 50%, 25%, 25%, and 9% of their total biomass/day during feeding. Highest TL and WBW of gynogenetic diploid larvae (AG) were observed with 50.6 ± 1.2 mm and 607.3 ± 36.1 mg (n = 30) at 38 dph. Highest TL and WBW of control larvae (AC) were recorded with 49.5 ± 3.8 mm and 600.8 ± 88.0 mg (n = 30), respectively, with 73.1% ± 11.4% survival; the lowest survival rate was at 46.4% ± 7.1% (n = 30) for the CFG group. The results indicate that the gynogenetic and normal larvae of sterlet fed with live food (Artemia nauplii) from 7 dph can achieve higher growth and survivability compared to the larvae fed with formulated test feed. Results of this study suggest that the effective rearing of sterlet larvae from 7 to 38 dph strongly depends upon the types of feed rather than the genome manipulation performed.  相似文献

Fly larvae can be used effectively to reduce various organic waste types and produce value-added products, including protein as an ingredient in livestock feeds and oil for biodiesel production. However, fly development on different waste types may cause differences in growth rate and the body composition, which can further be influenced by fly species and their stocking rate. This study explored the impact of different waste types (kitchen waste, abattoir waste and swine manure) and larval stocking rate on growth and body composition of four blowfly species, Chrysomya chloropyga (Wiedemann), Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius), Chrysomya putoria (Wiedemann) and Lucilia sericata (Meigen). First-instar larvae (20, 50 or 100), less than 3 hr old, were placed on 100 g of each waste type. Pre-pupal mass at commencement of post-feeding larval dispersal, time to onset of dispersal, survival and nutrient reserves were determined for each species, stocking rate and waste type. Our results revealed that larvae fed kitchen and abattoir waste had significantly higher dry mass, crude protein and lipid content compared with those fed swine manure. Higher survival rate was observed with increasing larval stocking rate. We provide important information to guide the mass production of high-quality nutrient-rich larvae and recommend C. putoria, which is versatile and effective on a range of waste products, as well as high in protein and lipids. The implications for waste management are discussed.  相似文献

Black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens L.) are widely cultivated as bioconversion agents. These larvae are known to be highly sensitive to changes in the external environment, such as temperature and relative humidity. Therefore, a rearing hive equipped with an instrumentation system known as the Modular Fly Hive was designed to cultivate black soldier larvae. This study aimed to determine the effects of aeration rate (0 – 0.84 m3/s.) and feed type (coconut endosperm waste and soybean curd) on growth and productivity of black soldier fly cultivated in Modular Fly Hives as well as well as feed digestibility and nutrient composition of the larval biomass. Increasing aeration rate decreased the average temperature and relative humidity within the hives. The results showed that the larvae demonstrated a sigmoidal growth curve for all types of feed and the type of feed significantly affects the average wet weight and length of the larvae. The greatest dry biomass productivity (52.85 ± 3.85 g/m2/day) was observed when the larvae were cultivated using soybean curd residue with an aeration rate of 0.84 m3/s, while the lowest dry biomass productivity (35.27 ± 9.72 g/m2/day) was observed when the larvae were cultivated using coconut endosperm waste without aeration. Proximate analysis revealed that the larval biomass had total protein, lipid, ash and carbohydrate content in the range of 37.20 – 48.60%, 9.61 – 20.02%, 4.80 – 6.40%, 33.86 – 38.70%, respectively. Amino acid in the biomass were dominated by glutamic acid (11.11–12.30%), aspartic acid (8.25 – 10.35%), leucine (8.09 – 8.57%), and lysine (6.74 – 8.14%). Lipid isolated from the larval biomass were mainly composed of lauric acid (28.35–61.68%), linoleic acid (6.27 – 30.29%), palmitic acid (7.62 – 15.23%), and myristic acid (5.05 – 14.34%).  相似文献

Some scleractinian coral larvae have an extraordinary capacity to delay metamorphosis, and this is reflected in the large geographic range of many species. Coral eggs typically contain a high proportion of wax esters, which have been hypothesized to provide a source of energy for long-distance dispersal. To better understand the role of lipids in the dispersal of broadcast spawning coral larvae, ontogenetic changes in the lipid and fatty acid composition of Goniastrea retiformis were measured from the eggs until larvae were 30 days old. Egg biomass was 78.8 ± 0.5% lipids, 86.3 ± 0.2% of which were wax esters, 9.3 ± 0.0% polar lipids, 4.1 ± 0.2% sterols, and 0.3 ± 0.1% triacylglycerols. The biomass of wax esters declined significantly through time, while polar lipids, sterols and triacylglycerols remained relatively constant, suggesting that wax esters are the prime source of energy for development. The most prevalent fatty acid in the eggs was palmitic acid, a marker of the dinoflagellate Symbiodinium, highlighting the importance of symbiosis in coral reproductive ecology. The proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids declined through time, suggesting that they are essential for larval development. Interestingly, triacylglycerols are only abundant in the propagules that contain Symbiodinium, suggesting important differences in the energetic of dispersal among species with vertical and horizontal transmission of symbionts.  相似文献

The decomposition efficiency of Perionyx sansibaricus (Perrier) for vermicomposting was evaluated by using a variety of wastes such as agriculture waste, farm yard manure and urban solid waste. Vermicomposting resulted in significant increase in total N (80.8-142.3%), phosphorous (33.1-114.6%) and potassium (26.3-125.2%), whereas decrease in organic C (14.0-37.0%) as well as C:N ratio (52.4-69.8%) in different experimental beddings. P. sansibaricus showed maximum biomass production, growth rate (mg day(-1)), mean cocoon numbers, and reproduction rate (cocoon worm(-1)) in VLL (vegetable waste+leaf litter) as compared to other substrate materials. There was a consistent trend for earthworms' growth and reproduction rate, related to initial N-content of the substrate (P<0.05), but there was no clear effect of C:N ratio of the composted material on earthworm cocoon numbers and weight gain. Earthworm showed minimum total population mortality in VLL and maximum in HHCD (household waste+cow dung), after 150 days of experimentation. The increased level of plant metabolites in end product (vermicompost) and growth patterns of P. sansibaricus in different organic waste resources demonstrated the candidature of this species for wastes recycle operations at low-input basis.  相似文献

The present study included four successive experiments to determine the chemical composition of the manures and the effects of including varying levels of poultry manure in sheep rations on nutrients digestibility, nitrogen balance and the possible adaptation to the experimental diets as the experimental period was prolonged. Four different poultry wastes were used. These wastes were: pure layer droppings, HELWAN (Experiment I); pure layer droppings, SAKHA (Experiment II); layer litter (Experiment III); and broiler litter (Experiment IV). Three levels of each waste (0, low and high) were tested in the rations of six mature Ossimi fat-tailed rams (two animals for each treatment). Results showed a wide variation in ash and crude protein contents of the different wastes. Layer droppings (HELWAN) contained the highest ash percentage (43·9), while broiler litter contained the lowest (18·8). For crude protein content, broiler litter had the highest value (34·0%) and layer droppings (SAKHA) the lowest (15·4%).Feed intake (g OM per kg0.75 day−1) decreased with increasing level of manure. Water intake and excretion were, in general, related to food and minerals intake. Feed intakes sometimes improved with advancing experimental period. In most experiments, digestibilities of ash and crude fiber increased while those of other components decreased with the inclusion of the waste materials in the diets. In vitro DMD or OMD were lower for diets containing waste materials than the control diets. Results of some rumen liquor parameters are tabulated and discussed.  相似文献

Black soldier flies, Hermetia illucens L., are a common colonizer of animal wastes. However, all published development data for this species are from studies using artificial diets. This study represents the first examining black soldier fly development on animal wastes. Additionally, this study examined the ability of black soldier fly larvae to reduce dry matter and associated nutrients in manure. Black soldier fly larvae were fed four rates of dairy manure to determine their effects on larval and adult life history traits. Feed rate affected larval and adult development. Those fed less ration daily weighed less than those fed a greater ration. Additionally, larvae provided the least amount of dairy manure took longer to develop to the prepupal stage; however, they needed less time to reach the adult stage. Adults resulting from larvae provided 27 g dairy manure/d lived 3-4 d less than those fed 70 g dairy manure. Percentage survivorship to the prepupal or adult stages did not differ across treatments. Larvae fed 27 g dairy manure daily reduced manure dry matter mass by 58%, whereas those fed 70 g daily reduced dry matter 33%. Black soldier fly larvae were able to reduce available P by 61-70% and N by 30-50% across treatments. Based on results from this study, the black soldier fly could be used to reduce wastes and associated nutrients in confined bovine facilities.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine the incidence of fecal coliforms, fecal streptococci, Aeromonas hydrophilia, and Salmonella spp. in the waste discharges of seven sewage treatment plants, four fruit and vegetable canneries, a meat packing plant, a poultry processing plant, and a potato processing plant located along the Cornwallis River in Nova Scotia, Canada. Surface water samples were also collected from 13 locations in the river to assess the impact of these waste discharges on the receiving water quality. The results showed that the final effluents from most of the sewage treatment and processing plants were of very poor bacteriological quality, with the number of indicator bacteria comparable with those found in raw sewage. Salmonellae were isolated from the effluents of the meat and poultry plants and five of the seven sewage treatment plants surveyed. No salmonellae were detected in the effluents of the fruit and vegetable canneries. The impact of the discharge of untreated municipal and food processing wastes on the Cornwallis River water quality was evidenced by the recovery from river water of five Salmonella serotypes, and the high fecal coliform counts which exceeded recommended limit for bathing and shellfish harvesting.  相似文献

Codling moth (CM), Cydia pomonella (L) is a pest of numerous fruit species and is also used as a host for baculovirus (granulovirus) and hence the high rate production of CM is important for their biological control. In this research, different wastewater residues from cheese industry, starch industry and municipal wastes (eight different types of larval diets) were investigated as potential substitutes for protein ingredient (principal component) of insect diet. CM larvae were produced with 65–75% survival rate and were healthy as observed under the microscope. Hence, use of cheaper alternatives in the diet derived from agriculture and/or municipal wastes was feasible. Moreover, the preparation steps involved, sterilization, mixing and homogenization and hence the simplicity of these steps makes it practical to scale-up the diet to industrial scale in future. There was no contamination all during the process development. Dryness of all larval diets increased with time, however, even after 26 days, the dryness was ≤18% which is an acceptable norm. Weight, length and diameter of CM larvae was higher when 50% of protein was replaced by cheese industry sludge and corresponded to 145 ± 5, 174 ± 5, and 103 ± 3% increase, respectively. Cheese industry sludge gave highest fecundity of 340 eggs/adult/g of larval diet and the values were higher for other alternative larval diets too. Hence, CM insect diet can be developed using alternative protein substitutes (wastewater residues) is feasible, by adopting simplified scheme with scope for industrial scale-up.  相似文献

The RNA/DNA ratio commonly used as proxy for the nutritional condition of fish larvae is affected by RNA degradation during analysis. For evaluation of two strategies to improve RNA integrity, a three‐week feeding trial was carried out to assess the suitability of two nematode species (fam. Panagrolaimidae) as feed for newly hatched carp larvae (Cyprinus carpio) in comparison to Artemia nauplii (Artemia sp.) and a commercial dry feed. Aiming for an increased reproducibility of RNA/DNA determination, a high‐salt inactivation (RNA later) as well as a targeted approach with a recombinant RNase inhibitor were compared to the classical protocol using lab chip technology. Improved RNA integrity was observed with high‐salt inactivation when compared with a strategy applying a specific RNase inhibitor or the classic protocol. Carp larvae fed Artemia for 2 weeks and then dry feed for 1 week revealed the best overall growth performance as well as survival [83.0 ± 35.2 mg fresh weight (FW), 20.0 ± 2.4 mm total length (TL), 86.6 ± 11.7% survival]. Larvae fed the nematode species Panagrellus redivivus for 1 week and subsequently dry feed for 2 weeks (37.4 ± 29.1 mg FW, 14.7 ± 2.8 mm TL, 76.0 ± 6.0% survival) performed better than larvae fed with dry feed alone (28.2 ± 29.6 mg FW, 14.3 ± 2.9 mm TL, 54.3 ± 14.2% survival) or those receiving Panagrellus for 2 weeks. Between both nematode species, Panagrellus was a better feed with regard to growth performance and survival. RNA/DNA ratios ranged between 0.65 ± 0.27 (8 days post‐hatch) and 1.96 ± 0.63 (22 days post‐hatch) and were in the same treatment order as the other growth parameters. RNA/DNA ratios were significantly correlated with the growth rate, and decreasing RNA/DNA ratios in larger larvae may reflect decreasing growth rates with size rather than decreased nutritional status. Here, an improved RNA/DNA ratio protocol is presented in a feeding trial that reveals the suitability of nematodes as a first feed for common carp larvae.  相似文献

The composition and pyrolysis characteristics of 60 types of biomass waste from the following six source categories were compared: agricultural residues, woody pruning waste from gardens and lawns, aquatic plant material from eutrophic water bodies, nutshells and fruit peels, livestock manure and residual sludge from municipal wastewater treatment. The yield and physicochemical characteristics of the biochar produced from these feedstocks at 350 °C, 500 °C and 650 °C were also examined. Results of correlation and canonical correspondence analysis between feedstock composition and biochar properties showed that feedstock type played an important role in controlling yield and properties of biochars. The yields of biochar dry ash‐free (daf.) basis were positively correlated with cellulose, lignin and lignin/cellulose content of feedstock; and ash content hampered the biochar production. Furthermore, the intensity of correlation between biochar yield and its feedstock composition was improved with pyrolysis temperature and degree of feedstock decomposition. The fixed carbon content in biochar was also negatively influenced by ash content of feedstock, and it increased with increasing pyrolysis temperature when the ash content was below 34.57% in feedstock and decreased when the ash content exceeded. The fixed carbon production in biochar per unit ash‐free mass (af.) was positively related to cellulose, lignin and lignin/cellulose content in feedstock, which were same with the yield of biochar (daf.). But on the contrary, the volatiles content in biochar (af.) had negative correlation with these organic constituents. For most feedstocks, the differences in the biochar characteristics among the biomass categories were greater than within any individual category. C/N, H/C and O/C atomic ratio and bulk density of biochar from different types of biomass were also compared. The results will provide guidance for the reutilization of biomass wastes and production of biochar with specified properties for soil amendment applications.  相似文献

The owners of farm-scale anaerobic digesters are relying on off-farm wastes or energy crops as a co-digestion feedstock with animal manure in order to increase their production of methane and thus revenues. Switchgrass represents an interesting feedstock for Canadian digesters owners as it is a high-yielding low-maintenance perennial crop, well adapted to northern climate. Methane potential assays in batch tests showed methane production of 19.4 ± 3.6, 28.3 ± 1.7, 37.3 ± 7.1 and 45.7 ± 0.8 L kg−1, for raw manure, blended manure, manure and mulched switchgrass, manure and pretreated switchgrass, respectively. Two 6-L lab-scale anaerobic digesters were operated for 130 days in order to assess the benefit of co-digesting switchgrass with bovine manure (digester #2), at a 20% wet mass fraction, compared with a manure-only operation (digester #1) The digesters were operated at an hydraulic retention time of 37 ± 6 days and at loads of 2.4 ± 0.6 and 2.6 ± 0.6 kg total volatile solids (TVS) L−1 day−1 for digesters #1 (D1) and #2 (D2), respectively. The TVS degradation reached 25 and 39%, which resulted in a methane production of 1.18 ± 0.18 and 2.19 ± 0.31 L day−1 for D1 and D2, respectively. The addition of 20% on a wet mass ratio of switchgrass to a manure digester increased its methane production by 86%. The co-digestion of switchgrass in a 500 m3 manure digester could yield up to 10.2 GJ day−1 of purified methane or 1.1 MWh day−1 of electricity.  相似文献

The study aim was to determine the optimum age, wet body weight (WBW) and total length (TL) of the crucian carp, Carassius carassius (L.), to ensure the effectiveness of weaning directly without a gradual transfer from live food to a compound feed. Moreover, the state of development of the digestive tract was analyzed histologically based on the height of enterocytes. Experimental rearing was conducted between days 5 and 45 post hatch (DPH). Initial WBW of fish was 2.2 ± 0.6 (n = 30) mg and TL 6.1 ± 0.1 (n = 30) mm. Rearing was carried out at 27 ± 0.5°C, with fish divided into six groups: one control (C) fed with Artemia sp. nauplii, and five groups initially fed with Artemia sp. but later replaced by a compound feed. Weaning with the compound diet started at 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 DPH in groups labeled F15, F20, F25, F30, F35, respectively. Larvae were fed three times per day (08.00 h, 13.00 h, 18.00 h) in equal portions (4% of larvae biomass per day, converted to the dry matter of the feed). Daily biomass growth was adopted as 15%. Each group was triplicated (n = 50 individuals per replicate). Highest values of TL 42.1 ± 0.7 (n = 30) mm and WBW 905.3 ± 50.3 (n = 30) mg were recorded in the control group at 45 DPH; lowest survival rate of 45 DPH was in group F15 (90.7 ± 1.2%, n = 30). The highest value of the enterocyte epithelial length was observed in individuals within groups F30, 34.8 ± 1.2 μm (n = 30) and F35, 35.4 ± 3.6 μm (n = 30), respectively, 30 and 35 DPH; highest percentage of deformations on the final day of the experiment was in group F15 (100 ± 0.0%, n = 30). The results indicate that an effective direct transfer from live food to prepared diets (with no gradual transfer) cannot be performed with crucian carp larvae before 30 DPH at 27°C, when the fish have reached TL = 31.1 ± 0.4 mm (n = 30) and WBW = 436.9 ± 13.7 mg (n = 30).  相似文献
