Indirect effects of insect herbivory on leaf gas exchange in soybean   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Herbivory can affect plant carbon gain directly by removing photosynthetic leaf tissue and indirectly by inducing the production of costly defensive compounds or disrupting the movement of water and nutrients. The indirect effects of herbivory on carbon and water fluxes of soybean leaves were investigated using gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence and thermal imaging. Herbivory by Popillia japonica and Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) caused a 20–90% increase in transpiration from soybean leaflets without affecting carbon assimilation rates or photosynthetic efficiency (ΦPSII). Mechanical damage to interveinal tissue increased transpiration up to 150%. The spatial pattern of leaf temperature indicated that water loss occurred from injuries to the cuticle as well as from cut edges. A fluorescent tracer (sulforhodamine G) indicated that water evaporated from the apoplast approximately 100 µm away from the cut edges of damaged leaves. The rate of water loss from damaged leaves remained significantly higher than from control leaves for 6 d, during which time they lost 45% more water than control leaves (0.72 mol H2O per cm of damaged perimeter). Profligate water loss through the perimeter of damaged tissue indicates that herbivory may exacerbate water stress of soybeans under field conditions.  相似文献

Annual plants transport a large portion of carbohydrates and nitrogenous compounds from leaves to seeds during the phase of reproductive growth. This study aimed to clarify how reproductive growth affects photosynthetic traits in leaves and matter transport within the plant in the annual herb Chenopodium album L. Plants were grown in pots and either reproductive tissues or axillary leaves were removed at anthesis. Matter transport was evaluated as temporal changes in dry mass (as a substitute of carbohydrates) and nitrogen content of aboveground organs: leaves, axillary leaves, stems and reproductive tissues. Photosynthetic capacity (light-saturated photosynthetic rate under ambient CO2 concentration), nitrogen, chlorophyll and soluble protein content were followed in the 20th leaf that was mature at the start of the experiment. Removal of reproductive tissues resulted in accumulation of dry mass in leaves and axillary leaves, and accumulation of nitrogen in stem as nitrogen resorption from leaves and axillary leaves proceeded with time. Removal of axillary leaves proportionally reduced dry mass and nitrogen allocation to reproductive tissues, thus affecting the quantity but not quality of seeds. Removal treatments did not alter the time course of photosynthetic capacity, nitrogen, chlorophyll or soluble protein content during senescence in the 20th leaf, but changed the photosynthetic capacity per unit of leaf nitrogen according to demand from reproductive tissues. Together, the results indicate that reproductive tissues affected carbon and nitrogen economy separately. The amount of carbon was adjusted in leaves through photosynthetic capacity and carbohydrate export from them, and the amount of nitrogen was adjusted by transport from stem to reproductive tissues. The plant’s ability to independently regulate carbon and nitrogen economy should be important in natural habitats where the plant carbon-nitrogen balance can easily be disturbed by external factors.  相似文献

To evaluate whether leaf spot disease and related effects on photosynthesis are influenced by increased nitrogen (N) input and elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]), we examined disease incidence and photosynthetic rate of Solidago rigida grown in monoculture under ambient or elevated (560 μmol mol−1) [CO2] and ambient or elevated (+4 g N m−2 year−1) N conditions in a field experiment in Minnesota, USA. Disease incidence was lower in plots with either elevated [CO2] or enriched N (−57 and −37%, respectively) than in plots with ambient conditions. Elevated [CO2] had no significant effect on total plant biomass, or on photosynthetic rate, but reduced tissue%N by 13%. In contrast, N fertilization increased both biomass and total plant N by 70%, and as a consequence tissue%N was unaffected and photosynthetic rate was lower on N fertilized plants than on unfertilized plants. Regardless of treatment, photosynthetic rate was reduced on leaves with disease symptoms. On average across all treatments, asymptomatic leaf tissue on diseased leaves had 53% lower photosynthetic rate than non-diseased leaves, indicating that the negative effect from the disease extended beyond the visual lesion area. Our results show that, in this instance, indirect effects from elevated [CO2], i.e., lower disease incidence, had a stronger effect on realized photosynthetic rate than the direct effect of higher [CO2].  相似文献

Effects of variation in ear temperature on growth and yield of spring wheat   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Wheat plants were kept in a growth room at 15 oC from 7 days after an-thesis until maturity and their ears were warmed to 20 or 25 oC for various periods. Continuous warming initially increased the growth rate of the ear and decreased that of the stem, but hastened senescence of the ear and decreased final grain yield by decreasing dry weight per grain. Warming the ears increased the movement of 14C and nitrogen to them from the leaves and stem during the early stages of grain growth but decreased it later. Warming the ears for only the first 10 or 20 days also hastened ear senescence; grain yield decreased progressively with increase in duration of the warm period. All effects were greater at 25 than at 20 oC. The effects of changing ear temperature from 15 to 20 oC were independent of the temperature of the rest of the plant. Altering the humidity of the air around the ears by 4–7 mb at constant temperature had no effect on ear growth or senescence. Warming all of the plant except the ears from 15 to 20 oC increased ear growth slightly during early grain growth and decreased it later, irrespective of ear temperature: stem dry weight, leaf area and net photosynthetic rate of flag leaves and green stems were decreased and dark respiration rate of stems was increased.  相似文献

Changes in growth parameters, carbon assimilation efficiency, and utilization of 14CO2 assimilate into alkaloids in plant parts were investigated at whole plant level by treatment of Catharanthus roseus with gibberellic acid (GA). Application of GA (1 000 g m−3) resulted in changes in leaf morphology, increase in stem elongation, leaf and internode length, plant height, and decrease in biomass content. Phenotypic changes were accompanied by decrease in contents of chlorophylls and in photosynthetic capacity. GA application resulted in higher % of total alkaloids accumulated in leaf, stem, and root. GA treatment produced negative phenotypic response in total biomass production but positive response in content of total alkaloids in leaf, stem, and roots. 14C assimilate partitioning revealed that 14C distribution in leaf, stem, and root of treated plants was higher than in untreated and variations were observed in contents of metabolites as sugars, amino acids, and organic acids. Capacity to utilize current fixed 14C derived assimilates for alkaloid production was high in leaves but low in roots of treated plants despite higher content of 14C metabolites such as sugars, amino acids, and organic acids. In spite of higher availability of metabolites, their utilization into alkaloid production is low in GA-treated roots.

The rate of photosynthesis and its relation to tissue nitrogen content was studied in leaves and siliques of winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) growing under field conditions including three rates of nitrogen application (0, 100 or 200 kg N ha-1) and two levels of irrigation (rainfed or irrigated at a deficit of 20 mm). The predominant effect of increasing N application under conditions without water deficiency was enhanced expansion of photosynthetically active leaf and silique surfaces, while the rate of photosynthesis per unit leaf or silique surface area was similar in the different N treatments. Thus, oilseed rape did not increase N investment in leaf area expansion before a decline in photosynthetic rate per unit leaf area due to N deficiency could be avoided. Much less photosynthetically active radiation penetrated into high-N canopies than into low-N canopies. The specific leaf area increased markedly in low light conditions, causing leaves in shade to be less dense than leaves exposed to ample light. In both leaves and siliques the photosynthetic rate per unit surface area responded linearly to increasing N content up to about 2 g m-2, thus showing a constant rate of net CO2 assimilation per unit increment in N (constant photosynthetic N use efficiency). At higher tissue N contents, photosynthetic rate responded less to changes in N status. Expressed per unit N, light saturated photosynthetic rate was three times higher in leaves than in silique valves, indicating a more efficient photosynthetic N utilization in leaves than in siliques. Nevertheless, from about two weeks after completion of flowering and onwards total net CO2 fixation in silique valves exceeded that in leaves because siliques received much higher radiation intensities than leaves and because the leaf area declined rapidly during the reproductive phase of growth. Water deficiency in late vegetative and early reproductive growth stages reduced the photosynthetic rate in leaves and, in particular, siliques of medium- and high-N plants, but not of low-N plants.  相似文献

Pea plants (Pisum sativum L. cv. Alaska) were inoculated individually with one of 15 Rhizobium leguminosarum strains and grown under uniform environmental conditions in the absence of combined N. Differences in effectiveness of the Rhizobium strains produced plants with differing rates of whole plant apparent N2 fixation and total N content at the same morphological stage of development. Plants were analyzed to determine interactions between N2 fixation, N allocation, apparent photosynthesis, and growth. Total leaf N increased linearly with total N2 fixation (R2 = 0.994). The proportion of total N allocated to leaves, the per cent N content of individual leaves, and the photosynthetic efficiency of individual leaves showed a curvilinear response with increasing plant N content. Differences in allocation patterns of leaf N between plants with low and high N content resulted in differences in the relationship between total N content and plant dry weight. Results from this study show that N2 fixation interacts with leaf photosynthetic efficiency and plant growth in a manner that is dependent upon the allocation of symbiotically fixed N.  相似文献

Alterations in light quality affect plant morphogenesis and photosynthetic responses but the effects vary significantly between species. Roses exhibit an irradiance‐dependent flowering control but knowledge on light quality responses is scarce. In this study we analyzed, the responses in morphology, photosynthesis and flowering of Rosa × hybrida to different blue (B) light proportions provided by light‐emitting diodes (LED, high B 20%) and high pressure sodium (HPS, low B 5%) lamps. There was a strong morphological and growth effect of the light sources but no significant difference in total dry matter production and flowering. HPS‐grown plants had significantly higher leaf area and plant height, yet a higher dry weight proportion was allocated to leaves than stems under LED. LED plants showed 20% higher photosynthetic capacity (Amax) and higher levels of soluble carbohydrates. The increase in Amax correlated with an increase in leaf mass per unit leaf area, higher stomata conductance and CO2 exchange, total chlorophyll (Chl) content per area and Chl a/b ratio. LED‐grown leaves also displayed a more sun‐type leaf anatomy with more and longer palisade cells and a higher stomata frequency. Although floral initiation occurred at a higher leaf number in LED, the time to open flowers was the same under both light conditions. Thereby the study shows that a higher portion of B light is efficient in increasing photosynthesis performance per unit leaf area, enhancing growth and morphological changes in roses but does not affect the total Dry Matter (DM) production or time to open flower.  相似文献

Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) was grown with UV-B (280–320 nm) at levels simulating 25 nr 5% ozone depletion on the date of the summer solstice al 40°N latitude, with UV-A (320–400 nm), or with no supplemental irradiation. In plant growth chambers providing 300 μmol m?2 s?1 photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). UV-B-grown leaves elongated more slowly than controls but reached the same final length 1 day later. Leal specific fresh weight (mass leaf area?1) was significantly increased by UV-B after the 7th day of growth. IV-B did not significantly affect leaf area, fresh weight, dry weight, total chlorophylls, total carotenoids or photosynthetic quantum efficiency. CO2 assimilation was decreased by UV-B only at internal CO2 levels above 250 μl l?1. By the 8th day of growth, UV-B increased flavonoid (saponarin and lutonarin) accumulation in both the lower epidermis and the mesophyll: about 40% of the saponarin and 20% of the lutonarin were in the lower epidermis under all experimental conditions. Glasshouse conditions proved too variable for reproducible determination of growth and photosynthesis but were reliable for determining developmental changes in flavonoid (saponarin and lutonarin) accumulation and provided up to 800 μmol m?2 s?1 PAR. In the glasshouse UV-B-grown leaves had more flavonoids than controls al all stages from 5 to 30 days after planting: ca 509 more saponarin and 100% more lutonarin. Levels of soluble (vacuolar) ferulic acid esters were similar under all conditions on day 5. and on day 20 or later, but were significantly higher in UV-B-grown plants on days 10 and 15. UV-B decreased insoluble (cell-wall-bound) ferulic acid esters on a whole leaf basis but significantly increased this fraction in the lower epidermis. UV-A had no significant effects on growth, photosynthesis or ferulic acid, but it slightly increased flavonoid accumulation. The results are discussed in terms of secondary phenolics as a tissue-specific, developmentally regulated adaptive response to UV-B.  相似文献

The effects of 6-benzyladenine (6-BA) on plant growth, photosynthetic gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence and antioxidant systems of eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) under salt stress were investigated. Eggplant seedlings were exposed to 90?mM NaCl with four levels of 6-BA (5, 10, 20 and 50???M) for 10?days. 6-BA at lower concentrations increased chlorophyll concentration, the net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), and transpiration rate (E), intercellular CO2 concentration (C i) and water use efficiency (WUE), as well as the quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry (??PSII), photochemical quenching (q p), and decreased non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), while higher concentrations reduced the effects or even exacerbated the occurrence of photosynthetic capacity. The activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) increased significantly during salt treatments, and induced the increase of the activities of these enzymes at certain concentrations of 6-BA. 6-BA also reduced significantly malonaldehyde (MDA) contents and O 2 ·? production. It was concluded that 6-BA could alleviate the detrimental effects of salt stress on plant growth by increasing photosynthetic efficiency and enhancing antioxidant enzyme systems in leaves at a proper concentration and of the varying 6-BA concentrations used, the most effective concentration for promoting growth was 10???M under saline conditions.  相似文献

Acclimation of photosynthetic capacity to elevated CO2 involves a decrease of the leaf Rubisco content. In the present study, it was hypothesized that nitrogen uptake and partitioning within the leaf and among different aboveground organs affects the down-regulation of Rubisco. Given the interdependence of nitrogen and cytokinin signals at the whole plant level, it is also proposed that cytokinins affect the nitrogen economy of plants under elevated CO2, and therefore the acclimatory responses. Spring wheat received varying levels of nitrogen and cytokinin in field chambers with ambient (370 μmol mol−1) or elevated (700 μmol mol−1) atmospheric CO2. Gas exchange, Rubisco, soluble protein and nitrogen contents were determined in the top three leaves in the canopy, together with total nitrogen contents per shoot. Growth in elevated CO2 induced decreases in photosynthetic capacity only when nitrogen supply was low. However, the leaf contents of Rubisco, soluble protein and total nitrogen on an area basis declined in elevated CO2 regardless of nitrogen supply. Total nitrogen in the shoot was no lower in elevated than ambient CO2, but the fraction of this nitrogen located in flag and penultimate leaves was lower in elevated CO2. Decreased Rubisco: chlorophyll ratios accompanied losses of leaf Rubisco with CO2 enrichment. Cytokinin applications increased nitrogen content in all leaves and nitrogen allocation to senescing leaves, but decreased Rubisco contents in flag leaves at anthesis and in all leaves 20 days later, together with the amount of Rubisco relative to soluble protein in all leaves at both growth stages. The results suggest that down regulation of Rubisco in leaves at elevated CO2 is linked with decreased allocation of nitrogen to the younger leaves and that cytokinins cause a fractional decrease of Rubisco and therefore do not alleviate acclimation to elevated CO2.  相似文献

Mutation of the nuclear gene sid disables chlorophyll degradation during leaf senescence in the pasture grass Festuca pratensis. This study investigated the effect of the mutation on photosynthesis and on leaf and whole plant growth under a range of nitrogen regimes. When plants were cultivated in a static hydroponic system, the chlorophyll content of fourth leaves of the stay-green mutant Bf993 remained virtually unchanged from full expansion to complete senescence, while tissue of the wild-type (cv. Rossa) became completely yellow. The retention of chlorophyll in Bf993 was not associated with maintenance of photosynthetic activity as shown by rates of light-saturated CO2 fixation and apparent quantum efficiency. Higher levels of total N in senescing leaves of Bf993 than in Rossa indicated reduced nitrogen remobilization in the mutant. When using a range of [NH4NO3], dry matter production and tillering Mere lower for Bf993 at all but the highest [NH4NO3, which was supra-optimal for the wild type. In contrast to the static system, where fluctuations in N supply occurred, growth and [NO3?] uptake were similar in mutant and wild type when [NO3?] was continuously maintained by a flowing solution culture system. The results are discussed in relation to the role of N supply and the effect of the stay-green mutation on N recycling.  相似文献

Although numerous studies have considered the functional significance of the terrestrial plant leaf surface, the importance of water repulsion for enhancing photosynthetic carbon uptake (CO2) has not been recognized and appears to involve an array of structural adaptations. The large majority of species tested had leaf surfaces that repelled water to such an extent that varying degrees of water-bead formation occurred. On more wettable leaves, the formation of a water surface film (dewfall) severely curtailed photosynthetic CO, uptake in the field, most likely because CO2 diffuses 104 times slower in water than air. Water bead formation not only enabled maintenance of high photosynthetic rates but also increased water use efficiency several fold. In 3 of 5 species tested in the field, water bead formation after artificial wetting resulted in greater stomatal opening and increases in photosynthesis of up to 34%. The most nonwettable leaf surface on a given leaf also had all or the majority of the leaf's stomata in 50 of the 57 species tested, indicating a potentially strong adaptive relationship between leaf surface wettability, stomatal occurrence, and photosynthetic performance.  相似文献

Cuttings of a single birch clone (Betula pendula) were grown in field fumigation chambers throughout the growing season in either filtered air (control) or 90/40 nl O3 l–1 (day/night). Both regimes were split into plants under high and low nutrient supply (macro- and micronutrients). The stomatal density of leaves was increased by ozone but was lowered at high nutrition, while the inner air space was hardly affected by the treatments. Ozone induced macroscopic leaf injury regardless of nutrition, but leaf shedding was delayed in the low-fertilized plants, despite O3 uptake being similar to that in high-fertilized plants. The leaf turn-over was enhanced in the O3-exposed high-fertilized plants, but length growth and leaf formation of stems were not affected by ozone in either nutrient regime. Leaves of high-fertilized plants showed O3-caused decline in photosynthetic capacity, water-use efficiency, apparent carbon uptake efficiency and quantum yield earlier as compared with low-fertilized plants, whereas chlorophyll fluorescence (FV/FM) and leaf nitrogen concentration were rather stable. CO2 uptake rate and rubisco activity of young leaves compensated for the O3 injury in the ageing leaves of the low-fertilized plants. In 8-week-old leaves, however, the O3-induced decline in CO2 uptake did not differ between the nutrient regimes and was associated with increased dark respiration rather than changed photorespiration. The balance between CO2 supply and demand was lost, as was stomatal limitation on CO2 uptake. High nutrition did not help leaves to maintain a high photosynthetic capacity and life span under O3 stress. Received: 6 July 1996 / Accepted: 4 June 1997  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) addition typically increases overall plant growth, but the nature of this response depends upon patterns of plant nitrogen allocation that vary throughout the growing season and depend upon canopy position. In this study seasonal variations in leaf traits were investigated across a canopy profile in Miscanthus (Miscanthus × giganteus) under two N treatments (0 and 224 kg ha?1) to determine whether the growth response of Miscanthus to N fertilization was related to the response of photosynthetic capacity and nitrogen allocation. Miscanthus yielded 24.1 Mg ha?1 in fertilized plots, a 40% increase compared to control plots. Photosynthetic properties, such as net photosynthesis (A), maximum rate of rubisco carboxylation (Vcmax), stomatal conductance (gs) and PSII efficiency (Fv'/Fm'), all decreased significantly from the top of the canopy to the bottom, but were not affected by N fertilization. N fertilization increased specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf area index (LAI). Leaf N concentration in different canopy layers was increased by N fertilization and the distribution of N concentration within canopy followed irradiance gradients. These results show that the positive effect of N fertilization on the yield of Miscanthus was unrelated to changes in photosynthetic rates but was achieved mainly by increased canopy leaf area. Vertical measurements through the canopy demonstrated that Miscanthus adapted to the light environment by adjusting leaf morphological and biochemical properties independent of nitrogen treatments. GPP estimated using big leaf and multilayer models varied considerably, suggesting a multilayer model in which Vcmax changes both through time and canopy layer could be adopted into agricultural models to more accurately predict biomass production in biomass crop ecosystems.  相似文献

An ecological study of dry matter production was made in a dwarf forest dominated byAlnus maximowiczii at the timberline of Mt. Fuji. Annual gross production was estimated by two methods, namely the summation method using stem analysis and total photosynthesis calculated from leaf area and photosynthetic rate per leaf area. Seasonal changes in relative light intensity and in leaf area were measured in a quadrat. Photosynthesis and respiration rates of samples were measured in temperature-regulated assimilation chambers. The phytomass was 2,989 g d.w.m?2, and those of stems and branches, leaves, and roots were 1,672 g, 293 g, and 1,024 g respectively. The growing period of this plant was about four months and this plant expanded leaves quickly. The maximum gross photosynthetic rate was 21 mg CO2dm?2 h?1 on September 1. Annual net production estimated by examining the annual rings was 922 g d.w.m?2 year?1 and annual respiration was 735 g. Annual gross production estimated from photosynthetic rates was 1,747 g d.w.m?2 year?1. The sum of annual net production by stem analysis and respiration agree closely with gross production estimated from photosynthetic rate. Gross production of this dwarf forest is comparable to the beech forest of the upper cool temperate zone owing to the high photosynthetic rate ofAlnus maximowiczii.

Mathematical models of light attenuation and canopy photosynthesis suggest that crop photosynthesis increases by more uniform vertical irradiance within crops. This would result when a larger proportion of total irradiance is applied within canopies (interlighting) instead of from above (top lighting). These irradiance profiles can be generated by Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). We investigated the effects of interlighting with LEDs on light interception, on vertical gradients of leaf photosynthetic characteristics and on crop production and development of a greenhouse‐grown Cucumis sativus‘Samona’ crop and analysed the interaction between them. Plants were grown in a greenhouse under low natural irradiance (winter) with supplemental irradiance of 221 µmol photosynthetic photon flux m?2 s?1 (20 h per day). In the interlighting treatment, LEDs (80% Red, 20% Blue) supplied 38% of the supplemental irradiance within the canopy with 62% as top lighting by High‐Pressure Sodium (HPS)‐lamps. The control was 100% top lighting (HPS lamps). We measured horizontal and vertical light extinction as well as leaf photosynthetic characteristics at different leaf layers, and determined total plant production. Leaf mass per area and dry mass allocation to leaves were significantly greater but leaf appearance rate and plant length were smaller in the interlighting treatment. Although leaf photosynthetic characteristics were significantly increased in the lower leaf layers, interlighting did not increase total biomass or fruit production, partly because of a significantly reduced vertical and horizontal light interception caused by extreme leaf curling, likely because of the LED‐light spectrum used, and partly because of the relatively low irradiances from above.  相似文献

The present study was performed to investigate the adjustment of the rate parameters of the light and dark reactions of photosynthesis to the natural growth light in leaves of an overstorey species, Betula pendula Roth, a subcanopy species, Tilia cordata P. Mill., and a herb, Solidago virgaurea L., growing in a natural plant community in Järvselja, Estonia. Shoots were collected from the site and individual leaves were measured in a laboratory applying a standardized routine of kinetic gas exchange, Chl fluorescence and 820 nm transmittance measurements. These measurements enabled the calculations of the quantum yield of photosynthesis and rate constants of excitation capture by photochemical and non-photochemical quenchers, rate constant for P700+ reduction via the cytochrome b6f complex with and without photosynthetic control, actual maximum and potential (uncoupled) electron transport rate, stomatal and mesophyll resistances for CO2 transport, Km(CO2) and Vm of ribulose-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase (Rubisco) in vivo. In parallel, N, Chl and Rubisco contents were measured from the same leaves. No adjustment toward higher quantum yield in shade compared with sun leaves was observed, although relatively more N was partitioned to the light-harvesting machinery in shade leaves ( H. Eichelmann et al., 2004 ). The electron transport rate through the Cyt b6f complex was strongly down-regulated under saturating light compared with darkness, and this was observed under atmospheric, as well as saturating CO2 concentration. In vivo Vm measurements of Rubisco were lower than corresponding reported measurements in vitro, and the kcat per reaction site varied widely between leaves and growth sites. The correlation between Rubisco Vm and the photosystem I density was stronger than between Vm and the density of Rubisco active sites. The results showed that the capacity of the photosynthetic machinery decreases in shade-adjusted leaves, but it still remains in excess of the actual photosynthetic rate. The photosynthetic control systems that are targeted to adjust the photosynthetic rate to meet the plant's needs and to balance the partial reactions of photosynthesis, down-regulate partial processes of photosynthesis: excess harvested light is quenched non-photochemically; excess electron transport capacity of Cyt b6f is down-regulated by ΔpH-dependent photosynthetic control; Rubisco is synthesized in excess, and the number of activated Rubisco molecules is controlled by photosystem I-related processes. Consequently, the nitrogen contained in the components of the photosynthetic machinery is not used at full efficiency. The strong correlation between leaf nitrogen and photosynthetic performance is not due to the nitrogen requirements of the photosynthetic apparatus, but because a certain amount of energy must be captured through photosynthesis to maintain this nitrogen within a leaf.  相似文献
