Using a data logger system, body temperature (dorsal subcutaneous temperature), heart rate, ingestive or ruminating behaviour and posture in adult Shiba goats tied to a stanchion were recorded automatically during 24 hours, to obtain basic information on the biological rhythms. A 600 g of usual ration mixed with hay cube, hay, beet pulp and wheat bran was fed twice a day (morning; 9:00-9:30, evening; 16:00-16:30). Animals kept under an artificial photoperiod (12L-12D, light period; 5:30-17:30) and about 10 degrees C room temperature. 1) Diurnal patterns of the above-mentioned items were recorded, mutual relationships relationships between these items were revealed. 2) The heart rate was higher after morning feeding, or during a light period and decreased gradually from midnight to early morning. Twice feeding greatly increased the heart rate. 3) The body temperature was lower in the early morning and increased gradually after morning feeding and showed the highest level during 1 to 1.5 hours after evening feeding. After that it decreased gradually till the early morning. 4) The numbers of jaw movement (bites/min) were a 70-90 bites in the ingestive behaviour and a 80-90 bites in the ruminating behaviour at dark period. 5) The total heart rate was a 110000 to 120000 beats/day, the total biting time was a 9.5 hours/day, and the mean standing time was a 9.3 to 11.7 hours/day. The standing time during light period (12 hours) was a 7.3 to 9.9 hours and that during dark period (12 hours) was a 1.8 to 2 hours.  相似文献

Food-restricted rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss maintained a lower basal heart rate than satiated fish, probably as a result of reduced metabolic rate. Food-restricted fish were also more active during feeding and were more willing to take risks than satiated fish. Both satiated and food-restricted fish were positioned lower in the tank after the predator attack. Heart rate increased more during feeding in the food-restricted fish compared to the satiated, but energy status had no general effect on the relation between heart rate and behaviour. Hence, the increase in heart rate was mainly a response to the more active foraging behaviour in the food-restricted fish. Moreover, behavioural activity in the food-restricted fish was associated with a higher heart rate after the predator attack than when the fish was undisturbed, which may reflect physiological preparation for flight. These findings suggest that behavioural and cardiac responses are coadapted to meet variation in food availability and predation risk in the wild.  相似文献

Many of the studies in Campos grasslands focus on management aspects such as the control of herbage allowance, and application of nutrients and/or overseeding with legumes. However, there is little literature on how the Campos grassland resource is utilised, especially regarding the grazing pattern and the relationship between pasture quantity and quality on daily grazing activities. The study of the ingestive behaviour in species-rich and heterogeneous native grasslands during daylight hours, and understanding how animals prioritise quality or quantity of intake in relation to pasture attributes, are important to comprehend the ingestive-digestive processes modulating the energy intake of animals and to achieve a better grazing management. Therefore, the objective was to describe and quantify the daily grazing behaviour of growing cattle grazing native pasture with different structures as a result of different management practices, and study the relationship of pasture attributes and intake through multivariate analysis. The study was carried out at the Faculty of Agronomy, Paysandú, Uruguay. Treatments were native grassland, overseeding with Trifolium pratense and Lotus tenuis + phosphorus, and native pasture + nitrogen-phosphorus. Grazing activities were discriminated into grazing, searching (defined when animals take 1–2 bites in one feeding station and then change to another feeding station and so on), ruminating and idling. The probability of time allocated to each activity was continuously measured during daylight hours (0700–1930) and was related to pasture structure and forage quality using regression tree models, while the bite rate was determined every 2 h. The diurnal pattern of growing cattle showed grazing and searching sessions, followed by ruminating and idling sessions. The length of sessions (as the probability of time allocated to each activity) varied throughout the day. The grazing probability was greater during afternoon than morning and midday (0.74 vs 0.45 vs 0.46, respectively), and it was associated with higher bite rate (34.2 bites/min). Regression tree models showed different grazing, searching and ruminating strategies according to pasture attributes. During the morning, animals modified grazing, searching, ruminating and idling strategies according to bite rate, crude protein in diet and herbage allowance. At midday, they only adjusted ruminating and idling, while during afternoon sessions, grazing activities were modified by pasture quantity attributes such as herbage mass and herbage allowance. By controlling the herbage allowance, herbage mass and pasture height, animals prioritise quality in the morning and quantity in the afternoon, integrating and modifying the grazing-searching and ruminating-idling pattern.  相似文献

1. Heart rates of beaver (Castor canadensis) under free-ranging captive conditions for active behaviors and resting in water (approximately 121 beats/min) were significantly (P less than 0.01) higher than for resting on land (100 beats/min). 2. Although no transient recovery tachycardia was evident in swimming heart rates following diving, average swimming heart rates were higher (127 beats/min) after diving than after other precursor behaviors (123 beats/min). 3. Beaver exhibited bradycardia when sleeping (75 beats/min), diving (61 beats/min), and when threatened on land (57 beats/min). 4. The respiratory sinus arrhythmia indicated a respiratory rate of 15 breaths/min. 5. Cold temperatures (approximately 0 degree C) elicited higher heart rates than did warmer temperatures (approximately 20 degrees C) in active, non-diving behaviors (P less than 0.05).  相似文献

Twenty-six Finnish Landrace x Rambouillet ewes were exposed to a series of artificial daylength cycles over periods of 6 mo. The cycles in general consisted of 3 mo. of long or increasing daylength, followed by 3 mo. of short or decreasing daylength. Increasing daylength to 22 hr.; 17.5 hr. or 15.75 hr. but not 14 hr. resulted in the onset of anestrus in all ewes. Only four of eight ewes in the 14 hr. cycle became anestrus. Abrupt decreases in daylength resulted in a more rapid return to reproductive cyclicity than a gradual decline. In addition, there appeared to be an inverse relationship between the length of the longest day of a treatment cycle and the time taken for ewes to return to reproductive cyclicity, following a subsequent abrupt decrease in daylength. Reducing daylength form 22 hr. to 17.5 hr. did not induce reproductive cyclicity. Reducing daylength from 17.5 hr. to 15 hr.; 12.75 hr. or 7.5 hr. did result in the onset of reproductive cyclicity. Finally, extending the period of long day exposure in a daylength cycle decreased the response time to a subsequent reduction in daylength. It was concluded that reproductive seasonality may be initiated by the interaction of darkness with a daily photosensitive phase in the ewe.  相似文献

Few physiological studies to date have focused on whether variation among sibling groups during development can account for often large, intraspecific physiological variation. In this study, we measured heart rate in the direct-developing frog Eleutherodactylus cooki throughout its embryonic development and examined heart rate variation among egg clutches comprising from 10 to 40 eggs. Clutches were collected in the wild in Yubucoa, Puerto Rico, and individual eggs were maintained under equivalent conditions in the lab. Heart rate showed large increases during development, rising from about 40 beats min(-1) in the earliest stages to about 110 beats min(-1) at hatching. The effect of stage (averaged across clutches) was highly significant (P<0.001). However, repeated-measures MANOVA also revealed that there were highly significant effects on heart rate associated with both clutch (variation among clutches averaged across development; P<0.001) and clutch-stage interactions (differences among clutches in the developmental change in heart rate; P<0.0001). These effects and interactions reveal that throughout development, heart rate in siblings is much more similar than in nonsiblings and that sib groups follow different heart rate trajectories during their development. Collectively, these data indicate that "clutch effects" caused by genetic and/or maternal influences can strongly affect patterns of heart function during development within cave coqui populations. This phenomenon also occurs in bird eggs and armadillo neonates, suggesting that physiological variation attributable to clutch effects might be a widespread phenomenon in vertebrates.  相似文献

For pike in the laboratory, the relationship between heart rate (fH) and oxygen consumption ( VO2 , mg h−1 standardized to a 500-g fish weight) can be described by a significant linear regression valid for heart rates below 55 beats min−1. Heart rate increases during activity and feeding, accurately reflecting fluctuations in metabolic rate; so it can be used as a measure of metabolic rate in the field, using heart beat telemetry techniques. Post-prandial heart rates are elevated, and closely correlated with the calorific value of the food taken in the preceding meal. Meal size can be estimated from the heart rate record with an error of less than 10%.  相似文献

Heart rate in hibernating garden dormice, Eliomys quercinus, was studied by means of permanently implanted electrodes; ambient temperatures (TA's) were maintained at 0, 4, 6.5, and 9 degrees C during the 6-month test period in each winter study. The animals were kept under constant conditions in darkness and without food or water. Heart rate remained at a low level during deep hibernation at all TA's studied. There were no differences in midwinter values between the TA's of 6.5 and 9 degrees C: the means were 9-12 beats/min during apnea. Heart rate thus differs from other hibernation parameters studied simultaneously, which were strongly TA dependent. However, the optimal TA of 4 degrees C could be distinguished and heart rate was significantly lower, 8-10 beats/min. At 0 degree C the values were slightly higher: 12-13 beats/min. The TA of 0 degree C was exceptional for all parameters studied. At the beginning of the hibernation season was a transition period with elevated heart rate values. Respiratory-related heart-rate changes appeared during periodic respiration, heart rate being significantly higher during respiratory periods at all TA's. At 0, 6.5, and 9 degrees C tachycardia occurred also during apnea, very close to the respiratory period. There are responses that are comparable to hypoxic environmental conditions during hibernation, diving, and pregnancy and under high-altitude conditions. Parallel adaptations appear in heart rate and respiration, i.e., bradycardia and periodic respiration. In conclusion, heart-rate values were low during deep hibernation, and compared with other parameters measured at different TA's heart rate is maintained inside narrow limits during deep hibernation.  相似文献

The reproductive neuroendocrine response of Suffolk ewes to the direction of daylength change was determined in animals which were ovariectomized and treated with constant release capsules of oestradiol. Two groups of animals were initially exposed to 16 or 10 h light/day for 74 days. On day zero of the study, when one group of ewes was reproductively stimulated (elevated LH concentrations) and the other reproductively inhibited (undetectable LH concentrations), half the animals from each group were transferred to an intermediate daylength of 13 h light/day. The remaining ewes were maintained on their respective solstice photoperiods to control for photorefractoriness. LH concentrations rose in animals experiencing a 3 h decrease in daylength from 16L:8D to 13L:11D while LH concentrations fell to undetectable values in those that experienced a 3 h increase in daylength from 10L:14D to 13L:11D. The photoperiodic response of the Suffolk ewe, therefore, depends on her daylength history. Such a result could be explained if the 24-h secretory pattern of melatonin secretion, known to transduce photoperiodic information to the reproductive axis, was influenced by the direction of change of daylength. Hourly samples for melatonin were collected for 24 h 17 days before and three times after transfer to 13L:11D. The melatonin secretory profile always conformed to daylength. Therefore, the mechanism by which the same photoperiod can produce opposite neuroendocrine responses must lie downstream from the pineal gland in the processing of the melatonin signal.  相似文献

The effect of shade on behavior and physiological attributes of grazing cows in a high altitude subtropical zone is not well established. This work aimed to investigate how social and ingestive behaviors, as well as physiological and other attributes of dairy cows such as milk production, change in a subtropical environment during the hot season either with or without free access to shade. Fourteen lactating cows were kept on pasture either with no shade or with free access to shade for 5 days and their behavior was recorded with instantaneous scan sampled every 10 min, from sunrise, 0530 h (Greenwich mean time, GMT−0200 h) to sunset, 2100 h (GMT−0200 h). Behavior traits included (1) time spent in activities such as grazing, ruminating, resting, lying, standing, walking, seeking shade and staying in the proximity to the water trough and (2) number of events such as water ingestion, aggressive interactions, as well as competition for shade and water. Physiological attributes such as heart and respiratory rates, rectal temperature, number of rumen movements, panting score, as well as milk yield, were evaluated. Time spent in behavioral activities, number of behavioral events and physiological attributes varied between groups (with and without access to shade). Cows with no shade showed increased respiratory and heart rates and panting score at 1300 h, higher values for time of permanence near the water trough, number of competition and aggression events for shade. On the other hand, they showed lower values for time spent resting while lying, ruminating while standing, seeking shade. Access to shade did not change time spent lying, standing, walking with the head up, ruminating while lying, resting while standing, as well as milk yield and number of ruminal movements. Significant interactions between access to shade and days of measurements were detected for time spent walking, ruminating, grazing, resting, number of water ingestion events, competition events near the water trough and for shade, as well as for rectal temperature and panting score measured at 1700 h. In the high altitude subtropical region, access to shade minimizes negative heat stress effects on behavior and physiological aspects of dairy cows.  相似文献

Conscious adult ewes prepared with nonocclusive indwelling vascular catheters were used to determine the mechanism by which heart rate increases during central administration of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Heart rate increased 14 bpm during steady-state intracarotid infusion of PGE2, 10 ng/kg/min (P less than 0.05). Intravenous atropine methyl bromide, 1 mg/kg, increased heart rate 26 bpm (P less than 0.05) 5 min after injection. Heart rate remained elevated 30 min after injection. The heart rate response to PGE2 plus atropine was greater than the heart rate response to either atropine or PGE2 alone (P less than 0.05). Propranolol, 1 mg/kg bolus plus intravenous infusion, 0.025 mg/kg/min, did not change resting heart rate. Propranolol attenuated but did not abolish the increase in heart rate caused by intracarotid PGE2. Although heart rate increased in response to PGE2 after administration of either propranolol or atropine alone, the combination of propranolol and atropine prevented any further increase in heart rate during subsequent PGE2 infusion. The increase in heart rate when all three drugs were given together was not different from the increase observed during atropine alone. Thus, both beta-adrenergic activation and muscarinic deactivation contribute to the PGE2-induced tachycardia.  相似文献

Increased cell size in triploid fish likely affects rates of respiratory gas exchange. Respiratory deficiencies can be addressed in fish by adjustments in cardiac output, through changes in heart rate and stroke volume. The aim of this study was to determine whether heart rate differs between triploid and control (diploid) brook charr, Salvelinus fontinalis, at embryo-larval stages, when the heart is easily visible and the fish are relatively inactive. Heart rate was measured at 6, 9 and 12 degrees C at three developmental stages: eyed-egg, hatch and yolk absorption. Heart rate was unaffected by ploidy, but increased with temperature and age from a low of 43.4+/-2.2 beats/min (6 degrees C, eyed egg) to a high of 73.3+/-1.5 beats/min (12 degrees C, yolk absorption). The Q(10) for heart rate was unaffected by ploidy and age, but decreased with temperature from 1.99+/-0.28 at 6-9 degrees C to 1.72+/-0.17 at 9-12 degrees C. Triploid brook charr thus do not use adjustments in heart rate as a mechanism to deal with the physiological consequences of altered haematology at embryo-larval stages.  相似文献

Factors known to influence left ventricular contractility include preload, afterload, circulating catecholamine concentration, efferent sympathetic discharge, and heart rate. Heart rate influences have been primarily determined in the dog, whereas the influence of heart rate in smaller mammals has not been determined. Eight pentobarbital-anesthetized rabbits were instrumented to measure electrocardiogram, heart rate, left ventricular pressure, end-diastolic pressure, dP/dt, and mean and pulsatile aortic pressures. Systematic bradycardia was induced by stimulating the peripheral end of the sectioned right vagus nerve. Between 293 and 235 beats/min, there was no change in (dP/dt)max as heart rate was decreased. Below this range there was a direct relationship between (dP/dt)max and heart rate. Preload remained unchanged down to 132 beats/min. There was a small but significant decrease in afterload (0.09 mmHg X beat-1 X min-1; 1 mmHg = 133.32 Pa) throughout the decrease in heart rate. Infusion of propranolol (2.0 mg/kg) produced no marked change in the heart rate - (dP/dt)max relationship, although both resting heart rate and (dP/dt)max were reduced. This study demonstrates that (dP/dt)max is not influenced by changes in heart rate above 235 beats/min in the pentobarbital-anesthetized rabbit. These results differ from findings in other animals, and demonstrate that species and heart rate ranges must be considered when drawing conclusions regarding (dP/dt)max as a reliable index of contractility.  相似文献

The effects of (i) herbage allowance, (ii) frequency of allocation and (iii) grass silage feed value on ewe and lamb performance were studied in mid-gestation ewes. Furthermore, the effects of (i) herbage allowance, (ii) frequency of allocation and (iii) grazing date and their interactions on subsequent herbage yield and feed value were also evaluated. Swards, which had a cut of silage removed on 6 September, received fertiliser nitrogen (34 kg/ha) for extended (deferred) grazing between 6 December and 1 February. Two grass silages differing in feed value were ensiled either precision chopped or in big bales from predominantly perennial ryegrass swards, respectively. In experiment 1, a completely randomised study involving 120 crossbred mid-gestation ewes (Belclare × Scottish Blackface) that had been mated in October was undertaken to evaluate the effects of extended grazed herbage allowance (1.0 and 1.8 kg dry matter (DM)/day), frequency of herbage allocation (daily and twice weekly) and grass silage feed value (low and medium) on ewe and subsequent lamb performance. The six diets were offered from days 63 to 120 of gestation. From day 120 of gestation to parturition all ewes were housed and offered the medium feed value silage ad libitum. All ewes received 19 kg concentrate prior to lambing. Increasing herbage allowance increased forage intake (P < 0.05), lamb birth weight (P < 0.01), weaning weight (P < 0.05) and growth rate from birth to weaning (P < 0.05), decreased herbage utilisation (P < 0.05) and tended to increase ewe condition score at lambing (P = 0.06). Frequency of herbage allocation or grass silage feed value did not alter (P > 0.05) ewe or subsequent lamb performance. In experiment 2, the effect of extended grazed herbage allowance (1.0 and 1.8 kg DM/ewe daily), frequency of allocation (daily and twice weekly) and grazing date (6 to 12 December, 27 December to 3 January and 17 to 23 January) on herbage yield at two harvest dates (27 April and 25 May) was examined in a split plot design study consisting of 72 plots. Delaying grazing date decreased herbage yield (P < 0.01) whilst delaying harvest date increased herbage yield (P < 0.05). Frequency of herbage allocation did not alter (P > 0.05) subsequent herbage yield. It is concluded that for ewes in mid-gestation 1.0 kg of low feed value silage DM had the same feed value, as determined by weaned lamb weight, as 1.3 kg herbage DM allowance. Each 1-day delay in grazing date reduced herbage DM yield by 54.2 kg/ha.  相似文献

Heart rate variability and postexercise heart rate recovery are used to assess cardiac parasympathetic tone in human studies, but in some cases these indexes appear to yield discordant information. We utilized pyridostigmine, an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor that selectively augments the parasympathetic efferent signal, to further characterize parasympathetic regulation of rest and postexercise heart rate. We measured time- and frequency-domain indexes of resting heart rate variability and postexercise heart rate recovery in 10 sedentary adults and 10 aerobically trained athletes after a single oral dose of pyridostigmine (30 mg) and matching placebo in randomized, double-blind, crossover trial. In sedentary adults, pyridostigmine decreased resting heart rate [from 66.7 (SD 12.6) to 58.1 beats/min (SD 7.6), P = 0.005 vs. placebo] and increased postexercise heart rate recovery at 1 min [from 40.7 (SD 10.9) to 45.1 beats/min (SD 8.8), P = 0.02 vs. placebo]. In trained athletes, pyridostigmine did not change resting heart rate or postexercise heart rate recovery when compared with placebo. Time- and frequency-domain indexes of resting heart rate variability did not differ after pyridostigmine versus placebo in either cohort and were not significantly associated with postexercise heart rate recovery in either cohort. The divergent effects of pyridostigmine on resting and postexercise measures of cardiac parasympathetic function in sedentary subjects confirm that these measures characterize distinct aspects of cardiac parasympathetic regulation. The lesser effect of pyridostigmine on either measure of cardiac parasympathetic tone in the trained athletes indicates that the enhanced parasympathetic tone associated with exercise training is at least partially attributable to adaptations in the efferent parasympathetic pathway.  相似文献

Low food availability often coincides with pregnancy in grazing animals. This study investigated how chronic reductions in food intake affected feeding motivation, and metabolic and endocrine parameters in pregnant sheep, which might be indicative of compromised welfare. Ewes with an initial Body Condition Score of 2.7±0.3 (BCS; 0 indicates emaciation and 5 obesity) were fed to attain low (LBC 2.0±0.0,), medium (MBC 2.9±0.1) or high BCS (HBC 3.7±0.1) in the first trimester of pregnancy. A feeding motivation test in which sheep were required to walk a set distance for a palatable food reward was conducted in the second trimester. LBC and MBC ewes consumed more rewards (P=0.001) and displayed a higher expenditure (P=0.02) than HBC ewes, LBC ewes also tended to consume more rewards than MBC ewes (P=0.09). Plasma leptin and glucose concentrations were inversely correlated to expenditure (both P<0.05) and appear to be associated with hunger in sheep. LBC ewes were in negative energy balance, with lower muscle dimensions, plasma glucose, leptin, insulin, cortisol, and insulin-like growth factor-1 concentrations and higher free fatty acids concentrations compared to HBC ewes; metabolic and endocrine parameters of the MBC ewes were intermediate. The high feeding motivation and negative energy balance of low BCS ewes suggested an increased risk of compromised welfare. Imposing even a small cost on a food reward reduced motivation substantially in high BCS ewes (despite high intake when food was freely available). Assessment of a willingness to work for rewards, combined with measures of key metabolic and endocrine parameters, may provide sensitive barometers of welfare in energetically-taxed animals.  相似文献

The behavioural and physiological responses of hens exposed to a slowly approaching human being were assessed using remote observation and radio telemetry of heart rate. Forty isolated hens of two strains and from two rearing environments were used. The sequence of behavioural changes included looking around, ceasing feeding, head shaking or complete withdrawal and finally crouching or escape behaviour. The heart rate rose from a mean level of 303 beats/min when the birds were at rest, to 465 beats/min when the cage was opened and the bird caught and held at the conclusion of the approach. The light hybrid strain showed more pronounced behavioural responses and a greater proportional rise in heart rate in the course of the approach than the medium hybrid birds, consistent with the induction of a higher level of fear. An environmental effect was also observed, pen-reared birds were more disturbed than caged ones. The similarity of the time course of the physiological and behavioural measures supports the concept of fear as an intervening variable which has simultaneous effects on heart rate and behaviour. Both may be effective in assessing fear, and they should be regarded as complementary rather than alternative measures.  相似文献

Summary The heart rate ofAnabas is about 40 beats/min when breathing water and air. Tachycardia occurs as the fish takes an air breath and the rate declines as the breath holding continues but water breathing stops. Bradycardia is observed during this later phase. By the time the next air breath is taken, the heart rate has dropped to 15–30 beats/min.The heart rate of a fish breathing normoxic water but prevented from surfacing is about 42/min. Bradycardia occurs in hypoxic water under similar conditions. Tachycardia is observed in active fish when breathing hypercarbic water and air.On exposure to air bradycardia is found in resting fish but tachycardia occurs during activity. In air,Anabas usually repeats a breath when the heart rate drops to 15–25 beats/min. Tachycardia occurs immediately following an air breath. Heart rate then returns over a period of 3–6 mins to the normal resting level of 30 beats/min.The gas composition of the suprabranchial chambers has been measured and its relationship with the occurrence of an air breath, tachycardia and bradycardia is described.The experimental results are discussed in relation to the anatomy of the blood supply to the respiratory organs. This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of offering ewes two different feeding levels, during mid and late pregnancy, on ewe and lamb behaviour 12 to 24 h after birth. Romney ewes, bearing twin (n = 80) or triplet foetuses (n = 56), were allocated to a pasture sward height of 2 or 4 cm between 70 and 107 days of pregnancy. In late pregnancy (day 107 to 147), half of the ewes were reallocated the alternate sward height, which produced four treatments: 2-2, 2-4, 4-2 and 4-4. Ewes were weighed on days 65, 92, 107 and 130 of pregnancy and lamb live weights were recorded 12 to 24 h after birth. Twelve to 24 h after birth the maternal behaviour score (MBS) of the ewes were determined, whilst their lambs were tagged. After the lambs were released, the behaviour of each ewe and her lambs was observed for 5 min. Ewe treatment and litter size had no effect on ewe MBS. However, as MBS increased (ewes stayed closer to lambs during tagging), ewes bleated less in a high-pitch and were quicker to make contact with their lamb. During the observation period, ewes in the 4-4 treatment had a greater percentage of their bleats in a low pitch (P < 0.05) than ewes in the 2-2 and 4-2 treatment (61.3% v. 41.3% and 38.8% low bleats, respectively) and more lambs born to 4-4 ewes (95%) bleated than lambs born to 2-2 ewes (84%; P < 0.05). However, lambs born to ewes in the 2-2 treatment bleated earlier than lambs in all other treatments (P < 0.05). Lambs born to 4-4 ewes were less likely (P < 0.05) to move towards their dam in order to make contact than lambs born to 2-2 or 4-2 ewes (3.1% v. 16.9% and 16.7%, respectively). These findings suggest that under the conditions of the present study, ewe nutrition had little effect on maternal behaviour. However, lambs born to ewes offered 2 cm pasture sward heights during mid and/or late pregnancy (2-2, 2-4 and 4-2 treatments) displayed behaviour that demonstrated greater 'need' whereas lambs born to ewes offered 4 cm during mid and late pregnancy sought less attention from their dam.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the minimum number of conspecifics that sheep require to minimize the stress associated with isolation from the flock. The study used twelve 3-year-old Suffolk ewes. Every test day the study randomly chose 1, 2, or 3 ewes to be visually separated from the flock for 20 min in a familiar pen, 20 m distance from their original pen. One of the ewes that remained in the flock was randomly chosen as a control. The dependent variables measured were number of steps, serum cortisol levels, body temperature, and heart and respiration rates before and after the 20 min isolation test. The study also recorded number of vocalizations and urinations. Results show that individual separation induced significant increases in respiration rate (p < .01), serum cortisol concentration (p < .01), number of steps (p < .01), vocalizations (p < .01), and urinations (p < .05). This effect declined to basal levels (control ewes) when a single companion ewe was present. There were no additionally significant (p > .05) advantages to having 2 companion ewes. The results indicate that the welfare of ewes is improved if they are separated from the flock in groups of at least 2 members.  相似文献
