Literature on the occurrence and toxicology of Alternaria mycotoxins shows that a wide range of Alternaria metabolites have been described although relatively few have been fully characterised. It has been reported that about half of the wild-type Alternaria cultures tested are highly toxic to mammals or birds but the compounds responsible have rarely been identified. Very little information is available on the nature or incidence of Alternaria mycotoxins in commodities grown in the UK. Preliminary results of an investigation of UK foods demonstrate the presence of several cytotoxic compounds in an ethyl acetate extract from an A. alternata culture. A toxic fraction has been isolated which appears to contain a compound not previously identified as an Alternaria mycotoxin.  相似文献

Analyses have been made of the inorganic constituents of the juices expressed from the leaves of Rheum, Rumex, and Oxalis. It has been shown that in all cases there is a large excess of inorganic cations over anions in the sap, the average ratio of cations to anions being 3.8 (Part 1, p. 239). The ash analyses of plant tissues (chiefly leaves) reported in the literature have been examined critically, and it has been shown that the preponderance of inorganic cations over inorganic anions in the ash and in the sap is general. It has been concluded that the excess of inorganic cations is consistent with the view that cations pass into the protoplasm chiefly in the form of hydroxides, and are accumulated either in the form of organic salts (such as the oxalates) or in non-polar linkage. It has been concluded that practically all the potassium and sodium found in plant ash must have been present originally in the form of soluble ionogenic compounds, but that a considerable part of the calcium and magnesium may have been present originally in the form of insoluble salts or as components of non-polar compounds. The methods whereby the cations, particularly potassium, may have been accumulated have been discussed, and it has been concluded that as it does not seem very probable that they enter chiefly as nitrates or bicarbonates we may suppose that they go in to a large extent as hydrates: this is highly probable in the case which has been most carefully investigated (Valonia).  相似文献

The possibility that the fossils attributed to Australopithecus africanus represent more than a single species is of significance because of the pivotal role that A. africanus has played in discussions about hominin evolution. The A. africanus hypodigm that is currently widely recognized evinces considerable variation in a number of craniodental characters, and this has led to speculation that more than one australopith taxon may be represented among the specimens from Sterkfontein. Although crania, mandibles and teeth have dominated these taxonomic discussions, the Sterkfontein postcranial remains also have been invoked. While several workers have proposed that some of the craniodental remains from Sterkfontein can be partitioned into two groups, there is a notable lack of agreement among them as to their actual sorting. Most of the craniodental observations that have been put forward in support of arguments for taxonomic heterogeneity of the Sterkfontein australopith assemblage have been subjective and anecdotal in nature. So too, the postcranial evidence that has been cited in support of more than one australopith species at Sterkfontein has been largely subjective, and limited to a small number of elements. The results of quantitative statistical analyses of the craniodental and postcranial fossils that have been undertaken to date are not necessarily consistent with the hypothesis of taxonomic heterogeneity.  相似文献

Healthy and mosaic infected leaves ofL. nudicaulis have been cultivated onMS and modifiedMS media (MC). Profuse growth and differentiation of tissue have been obtained onMS medium in diseased tissues as compared to the modified medium. Amphibian holoblastic cleavage in which all blastomeres contribute to any one of the three primary germ layers has been widely thought to be a developmental pattern in the stem lineage of vertebrates, and meroblastic cleavage to have evolved independently in each vertebrate lineage. In extant primitive vertebrates, agnathan lamprey and basal bony fishes also undergo holoblastic cleavage, and their vegetal blastomeres have been generally thought to contribute to embryonic endoderm. However, the present marker analyses in basal ray-finned fish bichir and agnathan lamprey embryos indicated that their mesoderm and endoderm develop in the equatorial marginal zone, and their vegetal cell mass is extraembryonic nutritive yolk cells, having non-cell autonomous meso-endoderm inducing activity. Eomesodermin (eomes), but not VegT, orthologs are expressed maternally in these animals, suggesting that VegT is a maternal factor for endoderm differentiation only in amphibian. The study raises the viewpoint that the lamprey/bichir type holoblastic development would have been ancestral to extant vertebrates and retained in their stem lineage; amphibian-type holoblastic development would have been acquired secondarily, accompanied by the exploitation of new molecular machinery such as maternal VegT.  相似文献

Among bacteria, many species have synonymous codon usage patterns that have been influenced by natural selection for those codons that are translated more accurately and/or efficiently. However, in other species selection appears to have been ineffective. Here, we introduce a population genetics-based model for quantifying the extent to which selection has been effective. The approach is applied to 80 phylogenetically diverse bacterial species for which whole genome sequences are available. The strength of selected codon usage bias, S, is found to vary substantially among species; in 30% of the genomes examined, there was no significant evidence that selection had been effective. Values of S are highly positively correlated with both the number of rRNA operons and the number of tRNA genes. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that species exposed to selection for rapid growth have more rRNA operons, more tRNA genes and more strongly selected codon usage bias. For example, Clostridium perfringens, the species with the highest value of S, can have a generation time as short as 7 min.  相似文献

Three rusts, Puccinia nassellae, Uromyces pencanus, and Puccinia graminella, are being studied as potential biological control agents for Nassella neesiana (Chilean needle grass) in Australia and New Zealand. An understanding of the life cycle of a pathogen is desirable before its release as a biocontrol agent is considered, to enable the assessment of the risks involved in such a release. Field observations and experiments have been carried out to elucidate the life cycles of these three pathogens. Puccinia nassellae cycles as urediniospores and produces dormant teliospores. Dormancy of teliospores has been broken through manipulation in the laboratory, but resulting basidiospores have failed to infect N. neesiana plants under the conditions tested. Uromyces pencanus cycles as urediniospores and its telia appear to have lost the capacity to produce basidiospores. Aecia have been reported for this rust in the literature. However, evidence is provided that these aecia in fact belong to the life cycle of P. graminella. Puccinia graminella produces only aecia and telia. The aeciospores have been shown to be repetitive (aecidioid urediniospores). Teliospores germinate directly without a dormant phase, but resulting basidiospores failed to infect N. neesiana plants under the conditions tested. The role of teliospores in the life cycle of all three rusts remains unknown. Although the autoecious nature of their life cycles has not been proven experimentally, neither is there any evidence that they are heteroecious. Practical and theoretical implications of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

Sexual dimorphism is widespread among carnivorans, and has been an important evolutionary factor in social ecology. However, its presence in sabertoothed felids remains contentious. Here we present a comprehensive analysis of extant Panthera and the sabertoothed felid Smilodon fatalis. S. fatalis has been reported to show little or no sexual dimorphism but to have been intraspecifically variable in skull morphology. We found that large and small specimens of S. fatalis could be assigned to male and female sexes with similar degrees of confidence as Panthera based on craniomandibular shape. P. uncia is much less craniomandibularly variable and has low levels of sexual size-dimorphism. Shape variation in S. fatalis probably reflects sexual differences. Craniomandibular size-dimorphism is lower in S. fatalis than in Panthera except P. uncia. Sexual dimorphism in felids is related to more than overall size, and S. fatalis and the four large Panthera species show marked and similar craniomandibular and dental morphometric sexual dimorphism, whereas morphometric dimorphism in P. uncia is less. Many morphometric-sexually dimorphic characters in Panthera and Smilodon are related to bite strength and presumably to killing ecology. This suggests that morphometric sexual dimorphism is an evolutionary adaptation to intraspecific resource partitioning, since large males with thicker upper canines and stronger bite forces would be able to hunt larger prey than females, which is corroborated by feeding ecology in P. leo. Sexual dimorphism indicates that S. fatalis could have been social, but it is unlikely that it lived in fusion-fission units dominated by one or a few males, as in sub-Saharan populations of P. leo. Instead, S. fatalis could have been solitary and polygynous, as most extant felids, or it may have lived in unisexual groups, as is common in P. leo persica.  相似文献

Body wall grafts have been exchanged between Lumbricus terrestris and Eisenia foetida unicolor, and the survival times of second-set grafts and a limited number of third-set grafts have been compared with those of first-set grafts. Survival of grafts has also been studied following implantation. The results do not support the hypothesis that second-set rejection is accelerated due to an immune response as in higher vertebrates. Evidence is presented that Eisenia are individually different and that the differential graft survival may be due to tissue incompatibility, survival times depending on the degree of difference in the environment presented by the recipient.  相似文献

Recognition ofClematis gattingeri Small as an independent species has been based primarily on the smaller flowers and glandular pubescence of specimens collected from 1897 to 1901 by A. Gattinger. Recent studies have indicated that flower size varies among all members of subsect.Viornae to whichC. gattingeri belongs and should not be considered a significant taxonomic character for species delimitation. Studies using both light and scanning electron microscopy confirm the presence of glandular pubescence on Gattinger’s specimens, but other specimens with glandular pubescence have never since been found.Clematis gattingeri is believed to have been a minor variant ofC. viorna L. and is accordingly placed in synonymy.  相似文献

Cosesaurus aviceps, a small, probable diapsid reptile from the Ladinian (Middle Triassic) of Montral-Alcover (prov. Tarragona, Spain), has been reported as an ancestor of the Neornites. The only known specimen of this taxon is likely an inmature individual. The allometric growth models have been introduced in the character analysis, to infer the features of the adult Cosesaurus. For the present analysis, only the features that can be ascertained without doubt have been retained. The characters have been classified as primitive and derived. Cosesaurus shares all the ten derived characters we have found with Prolacertiformes, especially with Macrocnemus. The sister-group Macrocnemus + Cosesaurus is characterized by the relatively elongated neck in respect both to the skull and trunk length, 7–8 cervical vertebrae with the centra relatively elongated, and a relatively narrow distal femur region.  相似文献

To date, a few numbers of bacteriophages that infect Lactococcus garvieae have been identified, but their complete genome sequences have not yet been investigated. For the first time, herein, the complete DNA sequence of a new phage of L. garvieae (phage WP-2) is reported and analyzed. The morphological characteristics indicated that the phage had a small isometric head along with a short and non-contractile tail, suggesting that WP-2 belongs to the family Podoviridae. Bioinformatic analysis revealed that phage WP-2 can be classified as a new member of Ahjdlikevirus in the Picovirinae subfamily because it had a small dsDNA of 18,899 bp with 24 open reading frames and a protein-primed DNA polymerase. The phage nucleotide sequence and predicted protein products have been identified to share very limited evidence of homology with complete genome and proteome of other phages. To our knowledge, this is the first Ahjdlikevirus bacteriophage which can infect a member of the Lactococcus genus.  相似文献

Stable transformation of plants by Agrobacterium T-DNAs requires that the transgene insert into the host chromosome. Although most of the Agrobacterium Ti plasmid genes required for this process have been studied in depth, few plant-encoded factors have been identified, although such factors, presumably DNA repair proteins, are widely presumed to exist. It has previously been suggested that the UVH1 gene product is required for stable T-DNA integration in Arabidopsis. Here we present evidence suggesting that uvh1 mutants are essentially wild type for T-DNA integration following inoculation via the vacuum-infiltration procedure.  相似文献

The denitrifying strain T1 is able to grow with toluene serving as its sole carbon source. Two mutants which have defects in this toluene utilization pathway have been characterized. A clone has been isolated, and subclones which contain tutD and tutE, two genes in the T1 toluene metabolic pathway, have been generated. The tutD gene codes for an 864-amino-acid protein with a calculated molecular mass of 97,600 Da. The tutE gene codes for a 375-amino-acid protein with a calculated molecular mass of 41,300 Da. Two additional small open reading frames have been identified, but their role is not known. The TutE protein has homology to pyruvate formate-lyase activating enzymes. The TutD protein has homology to pyruvate formate-lyase enzymes, including a conserved cysteine residue at the active site and a conserved glycine residue that is activated to a free radical in this enzyme. Site-directed mutagenesis of these two conserved amino acids shows that they are also essential for the function of TutD.  相似文献

Pungency in peppers is due to the presence of capsaicinoid molecules, which are only produced in Capsicum species. The major gene Pun1 is required for the production of capsaicinoids. Three distinct mutant alleles of Pun1 have been found in three cultivated Capsicum species, one of which has been widely utilized by breeders. Although these mutations have been previously identified, a robust collection of molecular markers for the set of alleles is not available. This has been hindered by the existence of at least one paralogous locus that tends to amplify with Pun1. We present a suite of markers that can differentiate the four Pun1 alleles and test them on a diverse panel of pepper lines and in an F2 population segregating for pungency. These markers will be useful for pepper breeding, germplasm characterization, and seed purity testing.  相似文献

The hobo transposon is responsible for one of the three hybrid dysgenic systems that have been described in Drosophila melanogaster. Most studies on the hobo dysgenic system have been carried out using the PM system as a reference. However, these two systems differ significantly. In particular, several studies have failed to find any correlation between the molecular structures of hobo elements, the instability of the transposon and the incidence of gonadal dysgenic (GD) sterility. On the other hand, no study of the ability of females to permit hobo activity in their progeny when they are crossed with males harboring active hobo elements (permissivity) has yet been reported. In order to investigate the parameters involved in hobo permissivity, four E strains were studied with regard to the molecular nature of their hobo sequences and the GD sterility induced by a controlled source of hobo transposase. We show that hobo permissivity varies both within and between E strains. Moreover, permissivity decreases with age in E females. Our results are discussed with respect to similar phenomena that have been described in relation to the reactivity of the IR dysgenic system.  相似文献

Stromules are stroma-containing tubules that have been observed to emanate from the main plastidic body in vivo. These structures have been shown to require cytoskeletal components for movement. Though numerous studies have shown a close association with the endoplasmic reticulum, nucleus, mitochondria, and other plastids, the mechanism of formation and their overall function remain unknown. A limiting factor in studying these structures has been the lack of a reconstituted system for in vitro stromule formation. In this study, stromule formation was induced in vitro by adding a plant extract fraction that is greater than 100 kDa to a population of isolated chloroplasts. Kinetic measurements show that stromule formation occurs within ~10 seconds after the addition of the plant extract fraction. Heat inactivation and apyrase treatment reveal that the stromule stimulating compound found in the extract fraction is a protein or protein complex 100 kDa or greater. The formation of the stromules in vitro with isolated chloroplasts and a concentrated fraction of cell extract opens an avenue for the biochemical dissection of this process that has heretofore been studied only in vivo.  相似文献
