Summary The seasonal patterns of nodulation, acetylene reduction, nitrogen uptake and nitrogen fixation were studies for 11 pigeonpea cultivars belonging to different maturity groups grown on an Alfisol at ICRISAT Center, Patancheru, India. In all cultivars the nodule number and mass increased to a maximum around 60–80 days after sowing and then declined. The nodule number and mass of medium- and late-maturing cultivars was greater than that of early-maturing cultivars. The nitrogenase activity per plant increased to 60 days after sowing and declined thereafter, with little activity at 100 days when the crop was flowering. At later stages of plant growth nodules formed down to 90 cm below the soil surface but those at greater depth appeared less active than those near the surface. All the 11 cultivars continued to accumulate dry matter until 140 days, with most biomass production by the late-maturing cultivars (up to 11 t ha−1) and least by the early-maturing determinate cultivars (4 t ha−1). Total nitrogen uptake ranged from 69 to 134 kg ha−1. Nitrogen fixation by pigeonpea was estimated as the difference in total nitrogen uptake between pigeonpea and sorghum and could amount to 69 kg N ha−1 per season, or half the total nitrogen uptake. Fixation by pigeonpea increased with crop duration, but there were differences within each maturity group. The limitations of the methods used for estimating N2 fixation by pigeonpea are discussed. Differences in absorption and distribution of phosphorus (P) between early and medium-duration cultivars of pigeon pea grown on nutrient solution at two P concentrations were investigated. Low-P treatment (0.03 ppm) significantly reduced shoot weight, root length and root surface area in both cultivars compared to the control (1.0 ppm), but the reduction was more pronounced in the early than the medium-duration cultivar. Dry-matter accumulation in shoots was slightly higher in the medium-duration than in the early cultivar.32P-labelled P in the whole plant, P uptake rate and P-absorption ability were higher in the medium than in the early cultivar. At the low-P, however, no differences in these parameters were observed for control plants. In shoots,32P-labelled P tended to accumulate in the stem of the early cultivar whereas more P was distributed to the leaves and petioles in the medium cultivar. The results suggest that when P supply is limited, medium-duration cultivars accumulate more dry matter through high efficiency of P absorption and distribution P to leaves and petioles.  相似文献

Summary The total amount of nitrogen derived from symbiotic nitrogen fixation in two pea and one field bean cultivar, supplied with 50 kg N ha−1 at sowing (‘starter’-N), was estimated to 165, 136, and 186 kg N ha−1, respectively (three-year means). However, estimates varied considerably between the three years. At the full bloom/flat pod growth stage from 30 to 59 per cent of total N2 fixation had taken place. The proportion of total N derived from N2 fixation at maturity was higher in seeds than in vegetative plant parts and amounted to 59.5, 51.3 and 66.3 per cent of total above-ground plant N in the two pea cultivars and field bean, respectively (three-year means). The recovery of fertilizer N was 62.2, 70.2, 52.1, and 69.5 per cent in the two pea cultivars, field bean and barley, respectively. Growth analysis indicated that barley did not meet the claims for an ideal reference crop in the15N fertilizer dilution technique for estimating N2 fixation in pea and field bean. ‘Starter’-N neither increased the seed yield nor the N content of the grain legumes.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Joydebpur, Dhaka during the late wet season. Basal application of P at both 5 and 10 kg ha−1 significantly increased total biomass production and nitrogen fixation byAzolla pinnata R. Brown (local strain). Addition of both 5 and 10 kg P ha−1 in equal splits at inoculation and at six day intervals thereafter during growth periods of 12, 24 and 36 days increased biomass production and nitrogen fixation by Azolla over that attained with the basal application. Biomass and nitrogen fixation using a split application of 5 kg P ha−1 exceeded that attained with basal application of 10 kg P ha−1 and split application of 10 kg P ha−1 resulted in 0.58, 11.2, and 18.3 t ha−1 more biomass, and 0.47, 18.9, and 18.3 more kg fixed N ha−1 at 12, 24 and 36 days, respectively, than the same amount applied as a basal application. Analyses indicated that the critical level of dry weight P in Azolla for sustained growth was in the range of 0.15–0.17%. Compared with the control, where no P was added, and additional 30 and 36 kg N ha−1 were fixed after 24 and 36 days, respectively, when P was provided at 10 kg ha−1 using a split application. A separate field study showed that flooded rice plants received P from incorporated Azolla with about 28% of the P present in the supplied Azolla being incorporated into the rice plants.  相似文献

Seasonal patterns of growth and nitrogen fixation in field-grown pea   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
The seasonal patterns of growth and symbiotic N2 fixation under field conditions were studied by growth analysis and use of15N-labelled fertilizer in a determinate pea cultivar (Pisum sativum L.) grown for harvest at the dry seed stage. The patterns of fertilizer N-uptake were almost identical in pea and barley (the non-fixing reference crop), but more fertilizer-N was recovered in barley than in pea. The estimated rate of N2 fixation in pea gradually increased during the pre-flowering and flowering growth stages and reached a maximum of 10 kg N fixed per ha per day nine to ten weeks after seedling emergence. This was the time of early pod-development (flat pod growth stage) and also the time for maximum crop growth rate and maximum green leaf area index. A steep drop in N2 fixation rate occurred during the following week. This drop was simultaneous with lodging of the crop, pod-filling (round pod growth stage) and the initiation of mobilization of nitrogen from vegetative organs. The application of fertilizer-N inhibited the rate of N2 fixation only during that period of growth, when the main part of fertilizer-N was taken up and shortly after. Total accumulation of fixed nitrogen was estimated to be 244, 238 and 213 kg N ha−1 in pea supplied with nil, 25 or 50 kg NO 3 −N ha−1, respectively. About one-fourth of total N2 fixation was carried out during preflowering, one fourth during the two weeks of flowering and the remainder during post-flowering. About 55% of the amount of N present in pods at maturity was estimated to be derived from mobilization of N from vegetative organs. “Starter” N (25 or 50 kg NO 3 −N ha−1) did not significantly influence either dry matter and nitrogen accumulation or the development of leaf area. Neither root length and root biomass determined 8 weeks after seedling emergence nor the yield of seed dry matter and nitrogen at maturity were influenced by fertilizer application.  相似文献

Summary Tillage has been shown to affect the uptake of phosphorus (P) and yield of soybeans, [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], but there is little information concerning the effects of P fertilization on nitrogen (N2) fixation in soybeans under no-tillage. Two field experiments were conducted in 1980 and 1981 to determine the effects of soil P on N2 fixation under no-tillage and to study the interaction of P fertilization and tillage of N2 fixation, nutrient uptake, and yield of soybeans. In Exp. I, P was applied in 1977 at five rates up to 384 kg P ha−1 and the effects of residual soil P were evaluated in 1980 and 1981 under no-tillage management. Nitrogen fixation rates, as measured by acetylene reduction assay, were significantly affected by soil P in Exp. I, but the assay proved to be a poor technique for estimating total plant N in these tests. Acetylene reduction rates and plant P increased rapidly as soil P increased from 2 to 20 mg kg−1, with little additional increase above 20 mg P kg−1. In Exp. II, rates (0, 32, 64, and 128 kg P ha−1) and time (fall, spring and fall plus spring) of P application were compared under conventional tillage and no tillage. However, plant P increased with increasing levels of applied P. Applied P had no affect on acetylene reduction rates but rates were greater for no-tillage than conventional tillage at the V9 and R5 stages of growth in 1981. Plant uptake of P was more efficient under no-tillage than under conventional tillage in 1980 and 1981. Application of 64 kg P ha−1 under no-tillage resulted in equivalent plant P levels as the 128 kg P ha−1 applied under conventional tillage.  相似文献

Growth and N, P, K uptake of Acala SJ-2 cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) were investigated in an irrigated permanent-plot field (Typic chromoxerert) at Bet Dagan, Israel, under semi-arid conditions using different nitrogen levels: 0, 60, 120, 180 and 240 kg N ha−1. The total dry matter accumulation at these levels was 9.0, 10.7, 15.1, 17.1 and 15.6 ton ha−1, respectively. The uptake of N, P and K was 110, 144, 267, 322 and 301 kg N ha−1∶31, 34, 46, 44 and 38 kg P ha−1; and 120, 151, 208, 251 and 230 kg K ha−1, respectively. Dry matter production, as well as N, P, K uptake by the cotton plants were greatly increased by raising the N application levels to 120 or 180 kg N ha−1, but the pattern of accumulation and relative distribution of dry matter and NPK among plant organs were not considerably affected. Although wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is the dominant crop of the semi-arid plains of Canada and the western United States, lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) has become an important alternative crop. Sources and seasonal accumulation of N must be understood in order to identify parameters that can lead to increased N2-fixing activity and yield. Inoculated lentil was grown in a sandy-loam soil at an irrigated site in Saskatchewan, Canada. Wheat was used as the reference crop to estimate N2 fixation by the A-value approach. Lentil and wheat received 10 and 100 kg N ha−1 of ammonium nitrate, respectively. Crops were harvested six times during the growing season and plant components analyzed. During the first 71 days after planting the wheat had a higher daily dry matter and N accumulation compared to lentil. However, during the latter part of the growing season, daily dry matter and N accumulation were greater for lentil. The maximum total N accumulation for lentil at maturity was 149 kg ha−1. In contrast, wheat had a maximum N accumulation of 98 kg ha−1 in the Feekes 11.1 stage, or 86 days after planting. The maximum daily rates of N accumulation were 3.82 kg N ha−1 day−1 for lentil and 2.21 kg N ha−1 day−1 for wheat. The percentage of N derived from N2 fixation (% Ndfa) ranged from 0 at the first harvest to 92 % at final harvest. Generative plant components had higher values for % Ndfa than the vegetative components which indicates that N in the reproductive plant parts was derived largely from current N2 fixation and lentil continued to fix N until the end of the pod fill stage. At final harvest, lentil had derived 129 kg N ha−1 from N2 fixation with maximum N2-fixing activity (4.4 kg N ha−1 day−1) occurring during the early stages of pod fill. Higher maximum rates of N2-fixing activity than net N accumulation (3.82 kg N ha−1 day−1) may have been caused by N losses like volatilization. In addition, lentil provided a net N contribution to the soil of 59 kg ha−1 following the removal of the grain.  相似文献

The nodules which developed on the roots ofPisum sativum after inoculation withRhizobium leguminosarum bv.viciae strains showing a Hup+ symbiotic phenotype and/or a high relative efficiency of electron transfer to dinitrogen (RE) had a high nitrogen content of their tissue. In comparison with the nodules initiated by a strain possessing the Hup symbiotic phenotype or by an indigenous soilRhizobium population, the nitrogen-rich root nodules contained up to four times more nitrogen (9.2% of dry mass). In the nitrogen-rich nodules, total amino acid, and especially Ala, Lys and Phe contents were significantly increased. The nitrogen-rich nodule symbiotic phenotype (Nrn) was well expressed, irrespective of pea cultivars and host plant age. If a strain showing the Nrn phenotype was applied in double-strain inocula, a significant correlation was found between increasing rates of the strain and increasing percentage nitrogen content of nodule tissue in the nodulated plants.  相似文献

Effect of hydrogen uptake positive (Hup+) strain ofRhizobium sp. (pigeon pea) and VAM fungus (Glomus fasciculatum) was studied on the symbiotic parameters of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) cv. AL-15 at various levels of phosphorus. The Hup+ Rhizobium strain showed more nodulation, plant biomass and plant nitrogen content than its Hup counterpart. VAM infection in pigeon pea roots helped in translocating phosphorus from the soil and improved nitrogen fixation. Similarly, addition of phosphorus was found to play a positive role in enhancing all these parameters. Dual inoculation of Hup+ Rhizobium strain and VAM significantly increased nodulation, nitrogenase activity, plant nitrogen and phosphorus content and plant biomass compared to single inoculation of either organism and dual inoculation with Hup and VAM fungus.  相似文献

Improvement of dinitrogen fixation in beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) will depend on the selection of superior plant genotypes and the presence of efficient rhizobial strains. This study was conducted to evaluate diverse bean lines for N2 fixation potential using the15N-depleted dilution technique under field conditions in Wisconsin, USA. Plants of 21 bean lines and three non-nodulating isolines of soybean received appliin Wisconsin, USA. Plants of 21 bean lines and three non-nodulating isolines of soybean received applications of15N-depleted ammonium sulphate. Shoots harvested at the V6, R3 and R7 stages and dry seeds were analyzed for total N using the Kjeldahl procedure, and the ratio of15N to14N was determind on a MAT 250 mass spectrometer. Nodule occupancy of the applied strain ofR. leguminosarum biovarphaseoli, CIAT 899, was determined in five of the bean lines. Total shoot N content showed a pattern of accumulation similar to shoot dry weight and fixed N2 in the shoot. Based on shoot total N, N2 fixed in the shoot and shoot dry weight Riz 30 and Preto Cariri were identified as being as good fixers as Puebla 152 and Cargamanto appear to begin N2 fixation early. Furthermore, some bean lines that fixed considerable N2 did not translocate a large amount of N to the grains. Preto Cariri accumulated 21.2 kg N ha−1 in the seeds compared to Puebla 152 which accumulated 43.8 kg N ha−1 of the fixed N2 into the grains. At the early sampling, Puebla 152 and 22–27 had a considerable higher percentage of their crown nodules formed by the inoculant strain CIAT 899, than did Rio Tibagi which has been considered a poor N2 fixer.  相似文献

Dinitrogen fixation in white clover (Trifolium repens L.) grown in pure stand and mixture with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) was determined in the field using 15N isotope dilution and harvest of the shoots. The apparent transfer of clover N to perennial ryegrass was simultaneously assessed. The soil was labelled either by immobilizing 15N in organic matter prior to establishment of the sward or by using the conventional labelling procedure in which 15N fertilizer is added after sward establishment. Immobilization of 15N in the soil organic matter has not previously been used in studies of N2 fixation in grass/clover pastures. However, this approach was a successful means of labelling, since the 15N enrichment only declined at a very slow rate during the experiment. After the second production year only 10–16% of the applied 15N was recovered in the harvested herbage. The two labelling methods gave, nonetheless, a similar estimate of the percentage of clover N derived from N2 fixation. In pure stand clover, 75–94% of the N was derived from N2 fixation and in the mixture 85–97%. The dry matter yield of the clover in mixture as percentage of total dry matter yield was relatively high and increased from 59% in the first to 65% in the second production year. The average daily N2 fixation rate in the mixture-grown clover varied from less than 0.5 kg N ha−1 day−1 in autumn to more than 2.6 kg N ha−1 day−1 in June. For clover in pure stand the average N2 fixation rate was greater and varied between 0.5 and 3.3 kg N ha−1 day−1, but with the same seasonal pattern as for clover in mixture. The amount of N fixed in the mixture was 23, 187 and 177 kg N ha−1 in the seeding, first and second production year, respectively, whereas pure stand clover fixed 28, 262 and 211 kg N ha−1 in the three years. The apparent transfer of clover N to grass was negligible in the seeding year, but clover N deposited in the rhizosphere or released by turnover of stolons, roots and nodules, contributed 19 and 28 kg N ha−1 to the grass in the first and second production year, respectively. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We conducted a 4-year field experiment on a calcareous paddy soil in Zhejiang province of China to measure the changes in chemically extracted soil P fractions in an irrigated double-cropping rice system. Treatments included four fertilizer combinations (unfertilized control, NK, NP, and NPK) as main-plots and two rice cultivar types (inbred vs. hybrid rice) as sub-plots. Total plant P uptake and grain yield of rice declined in all treatments over time. Severe P-deficiency and significant rice yield losses began in treatments without P application after the second rice crop. Compared to inbred rice, hybrid rice increased grain yield (+18%), N uptake (+11%) and K uptake (+27%) but there was no significant difference in total plant P uptake. Recovery efficiencies of fertilizer-P averaged 31–32% in both cultivars. In treatments without P application, the P mass balance was negative (−6 to −8 kg P ha−1 crop−1) and phosphorus was drawn down in all inorganic P fractions, including resin, alkali- (NaHCO3-Pi and NaOH-Pi) and acid-soluble P fractions (dilute HCl-P, concentrated HCl-P, residual-P). Only small amounts were removed from organic P fractions, 1–3 mg P kg−1 year−1 from NaHCO3-Po and none from NaOH-Po. In treatments with fertilizer-P addition, the P mass balance was positive (+8 to 10 kg P ha−1 crop−1), soil P declined at a slower rate in inorganic P fractions and it increased (+51%) in the residual-P fraction. Hybrid rice generally caused greater depletion of inorganic soil P fractions than inbred rice, but there was no difference among cultivars in their effect on NaHCO3-Po and NaOH-Po. Positive correlations (r = 0.63–0.81, P < 0.001) were observed between all inorganic P fractions (except residual-P) and total P uptake by rice. Our results suggest that rice plants draw P from a continuum of chemically extracted fractions that are assumed to have widely differing plant P availability. Regular P additions are required to maintain the effective soil P supply and differences between inbred and hybrid rice should be taken into account in P management strategies.  相似文献

Maize (Zea mays L.) and ricebean (Vigna umbellata [Thumb.] Ohwi and Ohashi) were grown in intercrop and monoculture on Tropaqualf soils under rainfed conditions in Northern Thailand yearly from 1983 to 1986. De Wit's replacement design was used to compare intercrops and monocultures with a constant plant density equivalent to 80 000 maize or 160 000 ricebean plants ha−1. Combined nitrogen was applied at varying levels to 200 kg N ha−1. In the final two seasons the intercrop ratio of maize: ricebean was also varied. At the time of maize maturity intercrops yielded upt 49 kg ha−1 more N in the above ground plant parts than the best monoculture. Dry matter, grain and nitrogen yield of maize and ricebean in intercrop relative to their monoculture yields (RY, relative yield) were significantly greater than their respective share of the plant population. Relative yield totals (RYT) for grain, dry matter and nitrogen were always greater than 1. Nitrogen uptake per maize plant increased with progressive replacement of maize by ricebean plants. This increase was similar to that obtained by applying combined N. Available soil nitrogen tended to decrease with increasing maize:ricebean ratio. Increasing the maize:ricebean ratio increased the % of nitrogen derived from fixation in ricebean, the increase being equivalent to that obtained by decreasing combined nitrogen application. Approximately the same amount of fertilizer and soil nitrogen was taken up by maize plus ricebean in intercrop as the maize monoculture. The results suggest that the improved nitrogen economy of the intercrop resulted from the strong competitiveness of maize in the use of mineral nitrogen and the enhancement of nitrogen fixation in intercropped ricebean which made it less dependent on the depleted pool of soil nitrogen.  相似文献

Field trials under rain-fed conditions at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) in Colombia were conducted to study the comparative leaf photosynthesis, growth, yield, and nutrient use efficiency in two groups of cassava cultivars representing tall (large leaf canopy and shoot biomass) and short (small leaf canopy and shoot biomass) plant types. Using the standard plant density (10,000 plants ha−1), tall cultivars produced higher shoot biomass, larger seasonal leaf area indices (LAIs) and greater final storage root yields than the short cultivars. At six months after planting, yields were similar in both plant types with the short ones tending to form and fill storage roots at a much earlier time in their growth stage. Root yield, shoot and total biomass in all cultivars were significantly correlated with seasonal average LAI. Short cultivars maintained lower than optimal LAI for yield. Seasonal P N, across cultivars, was 12% greater in short types, with maximum values obtained in Brazilian genotypes. This difference in P N was attributed to nonstomatal factors (i.e., anatomical/biochemical mesophyll characteristics). Compared with tall cultivars, short ones had 14 to 24 % greater nutrient use efficiency (NUE) in terms of storage root production. The lesser NUE in tall plants was attributed mainly to more total nutrient uptake than in short cultivars. It was concluded that short-stemmed cultivars are superior in producing dry matter in their storage roots per unit nutrient absorbed, making them advantageous for soil fertility conservation while their yields approach those in tall types. It was recommended that breeding programs should focus on selection for more efficient short- to medium-stemmed genotypes since resource-limited cassava farmers rarely apply agrochemicals nor recycle residual parts of the crop back to the soil. Such improved short types were expected to surpass tall types in yields when grown at higher than standard plant population densities (>10,000 plants ha−1) in order to maximize irradiance interception. Below a certain population density (<10,000 plants ha−1), tall cultivars should be planted. Findings were discussed in relation to cultivation and cropping systems strategies for water and nutrient conservation and use efficiencies under stressful environments as well as under predicted water deficits in the tropics caused by trends in global climate change. Cassava is expected to play a major role in food and biofuel production due to its high photosynthetic capacity and its ability to conserve water as compared to major cereal grain crops. The interdisciplinary/interinstitutions research reported here, including an associated release of a drought-tolerant, short-stem cultivar that was eagerly accepted by cassava farmers, reflects well on the productivity of the CIAT international research in Cali, Colombia.  相似文献

Summary Inoculation of water fernAzolla pinnata R. Brown (Bangkok isolate) at the rate of 500kg fresh weight ha−1 in rice fields at weekly intervals after planting in addition to 30 kg N ha−1 as urea showed a decrease in its growth and N2-fixation with delay in application. Use of Azolla up to 3 weeks after planting (WAP) during wet and 4 WAP during dry season produced significantly more grain yield than 30 kg N ha−1, whereas its application upto one WAP produced more grain yield than 60 kg N ha−1. Grain yield with Azolla applied at the time of planting was similar to that of 60 kg N treatment during the wet season. Higher grain yields in zero and one WAP Azolla treatments resulted due to increase in both number of panicles m−2 and number of grains/panicle while the subsequent Azolla inoculations increased grain yield mainly by producing more number of grains/panicle. Dry matter and total N yields at maturity of rice crop were more with Azolla application upto 3 WAP during wet and 2 WAP during dry season while the reduction in sterility (%) was observed upto one WAP over 30 kg N ha−1 during both seasons. Number of tillers m−2 and dry matter production at maximum tillering and flowering were more than 30 kg N ha−1 with the use of Azolla upto one WAP. Increased grain N yield was observed with the use of Azolla upto 4 WAP during two seasons whereas straw N yield increased upto one WAP during wet and 2 WAP during dry season.  相似文献

Three field experiments involving wheat, lucerne or cotton were established at different sites in the semiarid cropping regions of northern Australia, to test whether the deep placement of P fertiliser improved P availability, compared to the conventional practice of placing the fertiliser beside or adjacent to the seed. At Mulga View, near St George in southern Queensland on a red Kandosol soil with a Colwell soil test value of 19 mg P kg soil−1 in the top 10 cm, there was no response to 10 kg P ha−1 applied in the 5–7 cm layer. However, increasing the depth of placement of 10 kg P ha−1 from 5–7 to 10–15 cm resulted in increased shoot growth and grain yield of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum) by 43 and 30%, respectively. A further grain yield increase of 43% to 3.2 t ha−1 resulted when the deep P rate was increased from 10 to 40 kg P ha−1. At Roma, in southern Queensland, on a grey/brown Vertosol with a Colwell soil test value of 15 mg P kg soil−1, there was no difference in the winter growth of lucerne (Medicago sativa) when P fertiliser had been applied at 5–7 cm depth at rates of 10 and 40 kg P ha−1. Shoot dry matter yields were around 2 t ha−1. However dry matter yields increased significantly to 2.6 and 3.7 t ha−1 when 10 and 40 kg P ha−1, respectively were applied at the 10–15 cm depth. The third experiment was carried out on a grey Vertosol at Kununurra in Western Australia. Significant increases in the yield of seed cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) occurred when 50 kg P ha−1 was applied at depth (10–15 and 25–30 cm), compared with the conventional placement at 7–10 cm, with maximum yield response to deep placement occurring with DAP, and the minimal response with MAP. The cotton was grown on raised beds and the crop was irrigated according to district practice. The response to deep P at all sites was attributed to the rapid drying of the soil surface layers, reducing the availability of soil or fertiliser P in these layers. The deep fertiliser P remained available during the growing season and alleviated the P deficiency that appears to be a feature of these soils when the surface layers become dry.  相似文献

Water hyacinth productivity and detritus accumulation   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Water hyacinth [Eichhornia crassipes (Mart) Solms] productivity and detritus accumulation were evaluated in eutrophic lake water with and without added nutrients (fertilized and control reservoirs, respectively). Seasonal changes in plant productivity and detritus accumulation were determined at monthly intervals for one year. Significant differences were observed in plant productivity between seasons and nutrient additions. Seasonal plant productivity ranged from 1.9 to 23.1 mg (dry wt) ha−1 for the fertilized reservoir and −0.2 to 10.2 mg ha−1 for the control reservoir. Detritus accumulation was not significantly different between seasons or nutrient additions. Seasonal N assimilation by plants ranged from 34 to 242 kg N ha−1 for plants in the fertilized reservoir and < 0 to 104 kg N ha−1 for plants in the control reservoir. Annual net N recovered in detritus represented 21 and 28% of the total N removed by plants in the fertilized and control reservoirs, respectively. Net N loading to the reservoirs from detritus was 92 to 148 kg N ha−1 yr−1.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) fixed by termites was evaluated as a N input to decomposition processes in two tropical forests, a dry deciduous forest (DDF) and the neighboring dry evergreen forest (DEF), Thailand. A diverse group of termite species were assayed by acetylene reduction method and only the wood/litter-feeding termites were found to fix N. More intensive samplings of two abundant species, Microcerotermes crassus and Globitermes sulphureus, were done across several seasons, suggesting N fixation rates of 0.21 and 0.28 kg ha−1 y−1 by termites in the DDF and DEF, respectively. Also, estimates of asymbiotic N fixation rates were 0.75 and 3.95 kg ha−1 y−1. N fixed by termites and by asymbiotic fixers is directly supplied to decomposers breaking down dead plant material and could be a major source of their N. N fixed by termites was 7–22% of that fixed by termites and asymbiotic fixers. Although N fixed by termites is a small input compared to other inputs, this N is likely important for decomposition processes.  相似文献

Toxic aluminum (Al) ion is a major constraint to plant growth in acid soils. Aluminum tolerance in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is strongly related to the Al-triggered efflux of malate from root apices. A role of the secreted malate has been postulated to be in chelating Al and thus excluding it from root apices (malate hypothesis), but the actual process has yet to be fully elucidated. We measured Al content and root growth during and after Al exposure using seedlings of near-isogenic lines [ET8 (Al tolerant) and ES8 (Al sensitive)] differing in the capacity to induce Al-triggered malate efflux. Aluminum doses that caused 50% root growth inhibition during 24-h exposure to Al in calcium (Ca) solution (0.5 mM CaCl2, pH 4.5) were 50 μM in ET8 and 5 μM in ES8. Under such conditions, the amount of Al accumulated in root apices was approximately 2-fold higher in ET8 than ES8. Al-treated seedlings were then transferred to the Al-free Ca solution for 24 h. Compared to control roots (no Al pretreatment), root regrowth of Al-treated roots was about 100% in ET8 and about 25% in ES8. The impaired regrowth in ES8 was observed even after 24-h exposure to 2.5 μM Al which had caused only 20% root growth inhibition. The addition of malate (100 μM) during exposure to 50 μM Al in ES8 enhanced root growth 1.6 times and regrowth in Al-free solution 7 times, resulting in similar root growth and regrowth as in ET8. Short-term Al treatments of ES8 for up to 5 h indicated that the Al-caused inhibition of root regrowth started after 1-h exposure to Al. The stimulating effect of malate on root regrowth was observed when malate was present during Al exposure, but not when roots previously exposed to Al were rinsed with malate, although Al accumulation in root apices was similar under these malate treatments. We conclude that the malate secreted from root apices under Al exposure is essential for the apices to commence regrowth in Al-free medium, the trait that is not related to the exclusion of Al from the apices.  相似文献
