A severe scarcity of life history and population data for deep-water fishes is a major impediment to successful fisheries management. Long-term data for non-target species and those living deeper than the fishing grounds are particularly rare. We analysed a unique dataset of scientific trawls made from 1977 to 1989 and from 1997 to 2002, at depths from 800 to 4800 m. Over this time, overall fish abundance fell significantly at all depths from 800 to 2500 m, considerably deeper than the maximum depth of commercial fishing (approx. 1600 m). Changes in abundance were significantly larger in species whose ranges fell at least partly within fished depths and did not appear to be consistent with any natural factors such as changes in fluxes from the surface or the abundance of potential prey. If the observed decreases in abundance are due to fishing, then its effects now extend into the lower bathyal zone, resulting in declines in areas that have been previously thought to be unaffected. A possible mechanism is impacts on the shallow parts of the ranges of fish species, resulting in declines in abundance in the lower parts of their ranges. This unexpected phenomenon has important consequences for fisheries and marine reserve management, as this would indicate that the impacts of fisheries can be transmitted into deep offshore areas that are neither routinely monitored nor considered as part of the managed fishery areas. 相似文献

Males of the grasshopper Chorthippus biguttulus produce songs which consist of the stereotyped and rhythmic iteration of a sound unit (termed syllable) separated by distinct syllable pauses. Virgin females respond to this signal, and to similar artificial signals, with song phrases of their own. In behavioural experiments the response probability of virgin females can be measured with artificial acoustic stimuli. The stimuli consisted of an amplitude modulated noise the envelope of which was altered. We investigated several hypotheses on the mechanisms of conspecific song recognition with special emphasis on the question whether recognition occurs in the frequency domain or in the time domain. (1) Females of Ch. biguttulus required only the first five Fourier components of the envelope function (corresponding to 50 Hz for a fundamental frequency of 10 Hz) to detect the syllable/pause structure. In addition, they detected small gaps within syllables if the signal contained at least ca. 15 Fourier components (corresponding to a frequency of 150 Hz). Further experiments showed that the correct phase information of the Fourier components is necessary for recognition, indicating that pattern recognition is not achieved merely on the basis of band pass filtering. (2) A cross correlation between the signal and an assumed internal template yields only inconsistent predictions of the response probabilities. (3) The recognizer system probably works in the time domain, possibly by direct comparison of adjacent syllable and pause durations. It is not yet clear whether the duration of a syllable is evaluated with respect to the preceding or succeeding pause. We emphasize that the neural recognizer of the grasshopper does not only examine a signal for its similarity to an internal template, but that it also takes into account features that indicate an incorrect signal. This may be a general feature of neuronal pattern recognition systems which have been shaped by natural selection. Received: 4 October 1997 / Accepted in revised form: 26 August 1998 相似文献

Over the fluctuation in population density of tent caterpillars, Malacosoma californicum pluviale and M. disstria, fecundity changes from being high at peak density to low for several years during the decline. During the increase phase, fecundity rapidly returns to moderately high levels with a further increase occurring to-ward the end of the increase phase. Two hypotheses which might explain these shifts are that (1) mortality from viral disease which is common during population declines selects for resistant individuals with low fecundity as an associated characteristic, and (2) sublethal viral disease reduces fecundity of moths during population decline. In this study we observed rapid shifts in the frequencies of large and small egg masses and in the mean fecundity between different phases of the population fluctuation. Viral disease was more common in caterpillars from small egg masses of the forest tent caterpillar. These observations are consistent with the hypothesis that sublethal effects of virus reduce the fecundity of moths during the population decline, but high fecundity is quickly restored when disease is rare during the population increase. 相似文献

Teleost fishes typically first encounter the environment as free-swimming embryos or larvae. Larvae are morphologically distinct from adults, and major anatomical structures are unformed. Thus, larvae undergo a series of dramatic morphological changes until they reach adult morphology (but are reproductively immature) and are considered juveniles. Free-swimming embryos and larvae are able to perform a C-start, an effective escape response that is used evade predators. However, escape response performance improves during early development: as young fish grow, they swim faster (length-specific maximum velocity increases) and perform the escape more rapidly (time to complete the behavior decreases). These improvements cease when fish become juveniles, although absolute swimming velocity (m s(-1)) continues to increase. We use studies of escape behavior and ontogeny in California halibut (Paralichthys californicus), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), and razorback suckers (Xyrauchen texanus) to test the hypothesis that specific morphological changes improve escape performance. We suggest that formation of the caudal fin improves energy transfer to the water and therefore increases thrust production and swimming velocity. In addition, changes to the axial skeleton during the larval period produce increased axial stiffness, which in turn allows the production of a more rapid and effective escape response. Because escape performance improves as adult morphology develops, fish that enter the environment in an advanced stage of development (i.e., those with direct development) should have a greater ability to evade predators than do fish that enter the environment at an early stage of development (i.e., those with indirect development). 相似文献

This study examined whether or not the reproductive response of female sheep to photoperiod varies with seasonal reproductive state. The specific objective was to test the hypothesis that the reproductive response to a long-day pattern of melatonin varies with the reproductive state of the ewe. The response examined was the synchronization of reproductive neuroendocrine induction (rise in serum luteinizing hormone, or LH) following nocturnal infusion of melatonin into pinealectomized ewes for 35 consecutive nights. This infusion restored a pattern of circulating melatonin similar to that in pineal-intact ewes maintained in a long photoperiod (LD 16:8). The ewes had been pinealectomized and without melatonin replacement for 16-25 months prior to the study. They were in differing reproductive states at the start of the infusion, as their endogenous reproductive rhythm had become desynchronized among individuals and with respect to time of year. Noninfused pinealectomized ewes served as controls. Regardless of the reproductive state at the start of the 35-day infusion of the long-day pattern of melatonin, all treated ewes exhibited the same reproductive neuroendocrine response after the infusion was ended. This consisted of a synchronized rise in LH some 6-8 weeks after the infusion was terminated, the maintenance of a high level of serum LH for some 15 weeks, and a subsequent precipitous fall in LH to a very low level. These results provide evidence that a long-day pattern of melatonin can synchronize reproductive neuroendocrine induction in the ewe, regardless of reproductive condition, and thus do not support the hypothesis that this response differs with seasonal reproductive state. 相似文献

Changes in the metabolic rate of the foraging honeybee: effect of the carried weight or of the reward rate? 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The metabolic rate of free flying honeybees (Apis mellifera ligustica) foraging on a multiple automatic feeder was measured in complete absence of perturbation. Each time the sucrose flow rate was doubled, the metabolic rate increased by 18.2 ± 2.0% (14.7 μl CO2 min−1) and final crop load by 25.1 ± 2.4% (7.04 μl). The possibility that the heavier load carried by the bees caused the increase in the metabolic rate was analyzed in detail. It was found that, for the same weight in the crop, the metabolic rate increased with the increasing reward rate. Therefore, a factor other than the carried weight might account for this increase: a motivational drive, whose intensity may depend on the reward rate at the food source. Although at higher reward rates metabolic rate increased during the visit, at lower reward rates it remained constant, suggesting that the effect of the carried weight on the metabolic rate might be controlled by this motivational drive. The hypothesis that honeybees maximize individual efficiency by reducing their crop load loses support, as foraging costs are not determined by the carried weight. The functional meaning of the reduction in crop load would be to increase the informational exchange at the hive. Accepted: 8 January 2000 相似文献

Competition and herbivory are two of the main forces shaping plant communities. Although several studies have investigated their impact on plant populations separately, few investigations have examined how they might interact. With the purpose of clarifying the combined roles of competition and herbivory on herb biomass in a grassland, we assessed the effects of different herbivores with reduced grass competition. We conducted a field experiment in 2000-2001 in a British acid grassland (Oak Mead), where we experimentally reduced grass biomass and excluded rabbits, insects and molluscs in a factorial design. Removing the grasses from Oak Mead dramatically increased herb biomass and total above-ground biomass. Herbivore exclusions (i.e. rabbits, insects and molluscs) did not affect total above-ground biomass, but they altered relative abundance of several species. Grass removal and rabbit exclusion had positive interactions on biomass of several herb species, and there were some subtle interactions between different herbivore groups: monocots benefitted when both rabbits and molluscs were excluded, and some herb species had greater biomass when insects and rabbits were absent. We then compared the results with a 10-year experiment that manipulated similar variables in neighbouring grassland (Nashs Field). The comparison between Oak Mead and Nashs Field showed that cessation of herbicide application returns the system to its previous state of grass dominance after 3 years. Therefore, even when herbs were more abundant, they could not prevent reinvasion of the grasses once external factors were removed. 相似文献

Abstract. Data referring to changes in vegetation composition resulting from cattle exclosure and ploughing in a Portuguese pasture dominated by annuals were used to test hypotheses regarding the biology of species favoured or eliminated by disturbance in semi-natural herbaceous communities. These hypotheses were tested in two ways. First we compared the distribution of six a priori groups – grasses, small rosettes, large rosettes, small species with leafy stems, large species with leafy stems, legumes – across grazed, ploughed and undisturbed plots. In a second set of analyses we examined changes in the frequencies of individual biological attributes in response to grazing and ploughing. These analyses were carried out separately for grasses and dicot forbs. Overall, the species composition showed little response to either grazing or ploughing, though species dominance changed. This lack of responsiveness of species composition was attributed to the long history of intensive land use which has resulted in the loss of disturbance-intolerant species over entire landscapes. When considering a priori groups, small rosettes were indifferent to disturbance. grazing and ploughing showed that dominated. Large rosettes, large species with leafy stems and legumes were generally intolerant to both grazing and ploughing, though individual species may increase in response to disturbance. Small species with leafy stems were the only group favoured by grazing whereas ploughing favoured grasses. As to individual traits, grazing excluded large grass species with heavy seeds and promoted a flat rosette canopy structure and a small size, along with a moderate dormancy and protected inflorescences. In forbs, grazing favoured small species, as expected, while it excluded tall species, and, in contrast to earlier results, a rosette canopy. These attributes were consistent with responses of the a priori groups, though it would not have been possible to reconstruct groups directly from the attribute list. Ploughing had no effect on any of the forb traits. As to grass traits, flat- and short-statured species increased and heavy-seeded species decreased. Our analysis revealed two advantages of establishing plant functional classifications within life forms. Subgroups within forbs had contrasting types of behaviour. For the same trait patterns could differ within the grass group from within the forb group. Finally, this analysis emphasizes the need for plant functional classifications aiming at the identification of syndromes of co-occurring attributes rather than of lists of isolated traits of which actual combinations are not specified. 相似文献

Heterostyly is a genetically controlled floral polymorphism usually associated with an incompatibility system. This set of
features is known to occur in several angiosperm families, but some aspects of its biology has not been well studied. The
present study investigates cellular aspects of the pollen–pistil interaction after compatible and incompatible pollinations
of Psychotria nuda, to increase our knowledge of heteromorphic self-incompatibility (HetSI). The use of bright field, fluorescence and transmission
electron microscopy methods allowed us to demonstrate that pollen tubes behave differently after incompatible and compatible
pollinations. Pollen tubes were particularly distinct after incompatible pollinations of L- and S-morph flowers. Relative
to compatible pollen tubes, incompatible L-morph tubes had a drastic reduction in cellular contents, but no cell rupture.
Incompatible S-morph tubes exhibited dense cytoplasm in apical regions, as well as in other regions, accompanied by a rupture
of the apex. These results support the hypothesis that L- and S-morph flowers have different incompatibility mechanisms during
HetSI. 相似文献

The hope that anti-angiogenic therapy might be the panacea for cancer has not yet been realized. There are many possible reasons for this, including endothelial and tumor cell heterogeneity, the presence of survival factors within the tumor micro-environment, the problem of defining the best dose and schedule for anti-angiogenic therapies, and angiogenesis-independent regrowth of tumors. Once these problems are understood, we can begin to evaluate approaches to thwarting them. These could include combining anti-angiogenic therapies with chemotherapy, with other anti-angiogenic agents or with other biological therapies. Another approach would be to employ a particular agent or combination of agents that target processes crucial to the survival of a particular cancer. 相似文献

Alteration in the excitatory/inhibitory neuronal balance is believed to be the underlying mechanism of epileptogenesis. Based on this theory, GABAergic interneurons are regarded as the primary inhibitory neurons, whose failure of action permits hyperactivity in the epileptic circuitry. As a consequence, optogenetic excitation of GABAergic interneurons is widely used for seizure suppression. However, recent evidence argues for the context-dependent, possibly “excitatory” roles that GABAergic cells play in epileptic circuitry. We reviewed current optogenetic approaches that target the “inhibitory” roles of GABAergic interneurons for seizure control. We also reviewed interesting evidence that supports the “excitatory” roles of GABAergic interneurons in epileptogenesis. GABAergic interneurons can provide excitatory effects to the epileptic circuits via several distinct neurological mechanisms. (1) GABAergic interneurons can excite postsynaptic neurons, due to the raised reversal potential of GABA receptors in the postsynaptic cells. (2) Continuous activity in GABAergic interneurons could lead to transient GABA depletion, which prevents their inhibitory effect on pyramidal cells. (3) GABAergic interneurons can synchronize network activity during seizure. (4) Some GABAergic interneurons inhibit other interneurons, causing disinhibition of pyramidal neurons and network hyperexcitability. The dynamic, context-dependent role that GABAergic interneurons play in seizure requires further investigation of their functions at single cell and circuitry level. New optogenetic protocols that target GABAergic inhibition should be explored for seizure suppression. 相似文献

Whiplash injuries are common following rear-end collisions. During such collisions, initially relaxed occupants exhibit brisk, stereotypical muscle responses consisting of postural and startle responses that may contribute to the injury. Using prestimulus inhibition, we sought to determine if the startle response elicited during a rear-end collision contributes to head stabilization or represents a potentially harmful overreaction of the body. Three experiments were performed. In the first two experiments, two groups of 14 subjects were exposed to loud tones (124 dB) preceded by prestimulus tones at either four interstimulus intervals (100-1,000 ms) or five prestimulus intensities (80-124 dB). On the basis of the results of the first two experiments, 20 subjects were exposed to a simulated rear-end collision (peak sled acceleration = 2 g; speed change = 0.75 m/s) preceded by one of the following: no prestimulus tone, a weak tone (85 dB), or a loud tone (105 dB). The prestimulus tones were presented 250 ms before sled acceleration onset. The loud prestimulus tone decreased the amplitude of the sternocleidomastoid (16%) and cervical paraspinal (29%) muscles, and key peak kinematics: head retraction (17%), horizontal head acceleration (23%), and head angular acceleration in extension (23%). No changes in muscle amplitude or kinematics occurred for the weak prestimulus. The reduced muscle and kinematic responses observed with loud tones suggest that the startle response represents an overreaction that increases the kinematics in a way that potentially increases the forces and strains in the neck tissues. We propose that minimizing this overreaction during a car collision may decrease the risk of whiplash injuries. 相似文献

We used tree-ring reconstruction data to study changes in the spatial pattern of live and dead trees at an annual resolution over a 50-year period at four unmanaged, even-aged fire origin jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) stands in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Canada. Previous studies of the spatial pattern in P. banksiana have either looked at only a snapshot from a survey done at a single point in time, or repeated measurements of permanent plots taken at 10-year intervals. With annual data, we could examine detailed changes in spatial patterns and relate these to events during stand development and external disturbances. Trees were initially clustered at all sites, but at different distances at each site, most likely because of variability in seedbed distribution at stand initiation. Clustering disappeared over time at all sites, and at a similar mean tree spacing at each site. However, significant regularity only appeared sporadically at one site, indicating that competition with neighbours was not the only factor influencing changes in spatial pattern. At two of the four sites, clustering disappeared suddenly at the same time that mortality rate reached a peak, in one case also coinciding with a jack pine budworm (Choristoneura pinus pinus Freeman) defoliation event. Dead trees were also initially more clustered than the distribution of all trees, but at different distances than the clustering of live trees. This also disappeared over time so that dead trees were eventually a random sample from the distribution of all trees. After the peak of mortality had passed, factors other than competition were determining the dynamics of these forests. 相似文献

In the framework of a planktological and ecological study in Lake Tanganyika, East Africa (CLIMLAKE, 2001–2005), variations
of cell abundance and size were observed in a green alga, Eremosphaera tanganyikae, at two study sites, one in the north basin of the lake (off Kigoma, Tanzania) and the other in the south basin (off Mpulungu,
Zambia). Whereas most green algae developed better in the rainy season and in the northern part of the lake, Eremosphaera developed better in the southern basin, in the dry season. It also exhibited large variations in cell abundance and cell
size, with maxima in the middle of the dry season, which may be related to increased phosphorus availability. Moreover, increase
in cell size (up to 80 μm in length), without notable change in S/V ratio, may provide the alga with resistance to grazing by copepods, which reach maximal abundance during the dry season. 相似文献
