 Although Pinaceae and Betulaceae have been reported to contain Glomus–type root endophytes, its ecological importance and the conditions influencing this symbiosis are poorly understood. Seedlings of Abies lasiocarpa, Alnus rubra, Pinus contorta, Pinus ponderosa, Pseudotsuga menziesii, and Tsuga heterophylla were inoculated with Glomus intraradices to determine the vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae (VAM) development and responsiveness of these hosts. The role of companion VAM host plants on mycorrhizal colonization and nutrient uptake by Pseudotsuga menziesii was also examined by growing seedlings of Pseudotsuga menziesii in dual culture with VAM hosts Thuja plicata or Calamagrostis rubescens. After 8 weeks, no seedlings were colonized. At 16 weeks, 8 of 17 Thuja plicata seedlings grown with Pseudotsuga menziesii and all 18 inoculated Thuja plicata seedlings grown alone were colonized with vesicles and hyphae. Two of 17 inoculated Pseudotsuga menziesii seedlings grown in dual culture with Thuja plicata were colonized with abundant vesicles and hyphae. No ectomycorrhizal seedlings grown in monoculture were colonized. At 9 months, all 10 Calamagrostis rubescens and all 10 inoculated Pseudotsuga menziesii seedlings grown in dual culture were colonized by vesicles and hyphae. Two of 10 inoculated Pseudotsuga menziesiiand 1 of 10 inoculated Pinus ponderosa seedlings grown in monoculture were similarly colonized. The mean phosphorus content in the needles of colonized Pseudotsuga menziesii seedlings grown with Calamagrostis rubescens was about twice as high as in noncolonized Pseudotsuga menziesiiseedlings grown with Calamagrostis rubescens. Tissue nitrogen did not differ between these treatments. The results show that Glomus intraradices colonization of Pinaceae is most successful when a VAM host is present, although some vesicular colonization of Pinaceae occurred in the absence of a VAM host. Following a single acute exposure to chlorine gas, persistenteffects on epicuticular waxes, cuticular transpiration, treegrowth and mortality were studied in foliage of Pinus ponderosaand Pseudotsuga menziesii for three growing seasons. Chlorinegas exposure caused foliar injury to both exposed foliage andfoliage that flushed after exposure (P < 0.05). The tendencyto form films of water rather than droplets was greater in directlyexposed foliage (P < 0.001). Rates of cuticular transpirationwere higher for directly and indirectly exposed foliage of Pinusponderosa up to 1 year after exposure and up to 6 months afterexposure for directly exposed Pseudotsuga menziesii(P < 0.001),after which P. menziesii needles defoliated. Total water content(TWC) and relative water content were significantly correlatedwith foliar injury (P < 0.05). TWC was lower for directlyexposed foliage up to 1 year after exposure (P < 0.001).There was no persistent negative effect on Fv/Fm ratios after1 year. Exposure to chlorine gas did not affect needle lengthor annual shoot increment growth, but exposure was correlatedwith increased bud production. Needle longevity of foliage thatflushed 2 months after exposure was reduced significantly (P< 0.001). Annual stem increment growth for both species decreasedover at least three growing seasons following chlorine gas exposure(P < 0.001), and depended on distance from the spill site.Cone production was lower for exposed Pinus ponderosa treescompared to controls (P < 0.05), and tree mortality was higherwithin approx. 50 m of the release site forPseudotsuga menziesii. Growth responses for both conifers agreed well with predictedpatterns of carbon allocation after defoliation caused by chlorinegas exposure. Several clones of Douglas-fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.)Franco, embryos grown in aseptic culture in the presence orabsence of the female gametophyte or a crushed aqueous extractof it, have shown striking differences in overall length, sizeand substance(s) responsible for this colour of the cotyledonsand in root length. The growth-promoting effect is diffusiblein agar, heat-stable and has detectable activity at a concentrationof about 0·1 to 1·0 per cent (v/v) in a basalnutrient medium. Evidence is provided that extracts of gametophytemay have synergistic effects with coconut water in promotingmorphogenesis of Douglas-fir cells in suspension culture. A new formulation for plant growth analysis, called the relativeproduction rate, is proposed for use in the study of perennialplants. The new measure and its yield components are similarto current growth analysis, but use the annual increment ofgrowth, rather than total accumulated growth, as the basis forassessing performance. The relative production rate removesaccumulated past growth of the perennating structure, a majordeterminant of relative growth rate, and acts independentlyof tree size as a measure of the vigour of growth. The multiplicativeyield components of this relative production rate also providebetter insight into the current morphological and physiologicalfeatures of the tree than the standard growth analysis formulations.Examples are given using Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii(Mirb.) Observations on the origin and mature structure of the haustoriumof the Western Australian Christmas tree (Nuytsia floribunda)corroborate and extend the findings of earlier workers. We showthat the previously described sclerenchymatous ‘horn’or ‘prong’ formed within the haustorium acts asa sickle-like cutting device which transversely severs the hostroot and then becomes lodged in haustorial collar tissue directlyopposite to that where it originated. The cutting process isdeduced to be rapid and the gland-like fluid filled structurein the haustorium is suggested to generate a hydrostatic forcedriving the device through the host root. The haustorial parenchymacells at the tight junction between the endophytic part of thehaustorium and the cut face of the host root develop balloon-likeoutgrowths which intrude into the lumina of severed xylem vesselsof the host. Experiments feeding 0.05% (w/v) basic fuchsin tofreshly cut ends of host root segments distal to terminally-attachedmature haustoria demonstrate an apoplastic pathway from hostxylem elements fractured at the interface into haustorial parenchyma,and thence through vascular tissue to the haustorium into thetranspiring plant of Nuytsia. Application of labelled water(D2O) to uncut basal roots of potted plants ofAcacia acuminataparasitized by Nuytsia results in labelling of leafy shootsof parasite and host, indicative of haustorial uptake of waterby Nuytsia from host root xylem in the intact association. Measurementsof xylem water potentials of pot-cultured seedling Nuytsia associatedwith a range of hosts, or of mature trees of Nuytsia and partnerwoody hosts in the native habitat, demonstrate consistentlymore negative potentials in the parasite than host, suggestingthat the parasite may regularly obtain xylem water through itshaustorial apparatus. Background and Aims Many conifer embryos, both in naturalseeds and in clonal populations of somatic embryos, displayvariability in the number of cotyledons. In hybrid larch, Larixx leptoeuropaea (synonymous with L. x marschlinsii Coaz), suchvariability has previously been reported in somatic embryos,together with a decrease in the average cotyledon number whenbenzyladenine (BA) is applied exogenously. Described here isa spatially quantitative study with the aim of throwing somelight on the way cotyledon number is determined, and hence themechanism of cotyledon formation. • Methods Stock cultures of embryogenic tissue were maintainedand later made embryogenically active by standard methods. Developmentthrough cotyledon formation was followed by optical microscopywith quantitative measurement of embryo diameter and numberof cotyledons. SEMs of representative stages and cotyledon numberswere done for purposes of illustration in this account. Existingmathematics of waveforms on a disc were cast into a form suitableto compare with the quantitative data. • Key Results The number of cotyledons is linearly relatedto the diameter of the apical surface of the embryo (which approximatesa circular disc) at the time of first appearance of the cotyledonprimordia. This linearity is a constant-spacing phenomenon betweenadjacent primordia. Addition of BA to the medium restricts therange of apical diameters without changing inter-cotyledon spacing.Slope/intercept ratio of the linear plot matches expectationfor initiation of cotyledon pattern as a harmonic waveform ona circular disc. • Conclusions The entire pattern of cotyledon primordiaarises as a single entity coordinated by a mechanism with wave-formingproperties. Pseudotsuga menziesii is one of the most widely planted conifers in the Patagonian Andes of Argentina, having invading characteristics that are broadly reported. We studied the mycorrhizal status of seedlings along six Nothofagaceae + P. menziesii invasion matrices to investigate their role in the invasive process, according to these hypothesis: a) The abundance and richness of EM will be higher in seedlings grown in their own soil; b) In the presence of native EM inoculum, the invasive plant will be associated with generalist mycorrhizae (EM and/or AM), c) AM associations will be more abundant in P. menziesii seedlings grown in Interface or native forest soils, d) Mycorrhizal community differences between treatments will alter host fitness (growth and nutritional parameters). Seedlings from Nothofagus dombeyi, N. antarctica, Lophozonia alpina, L. obliqua and Pseudotsuga menziesii were set up in a soil-bioassay that included soils from non-invaded Nothofagaceae forests, pure P. menziesii plantations, and the interface between both. Pseudotsuga menziesii seedlings showed a decreasing, although never null, ectomycorrhizal (EM) colonization pattern from plantations to non-invaded forests, mainly with exotic EM species. Hebeloma mesophaeum and Wilcoxina sp. 1, two EM species with cosmopolitan distribution, were found to be shared by both tree species. Hebeloma hiemale and Wilcoxina sp. 1, common mycorrhizal partners of P. menziesii in Patagonia although not registered from Nothofagaceae forest, were found to be associated with N. antarctica, being the first report for both fungal species. Pseudotsuga menziesii seedlings showed the ability to form different arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) colonization types (Paris-, Arum-, Both- and Intermediate-types) depending on the treatments, with significantly higher presence of Intermediate-type in the Interface treatment, where colonization was low. The shared EM species and the presence of different AM colonization types imply enhanced possibilities for invasive P. menziesii seedlings establishment and development. Seedling features and EM colonization rates evidenced that P. menziesii invasion could produce maladaptation (defined as a relative decline in host fitness due to altered mycorrhizal communities from native settings) of mycorrhizal communities, seriously injuring native ecosystem.  相似文献

Correlative inhibition was investigated in plants of Agropyronrepens at two temperatures. Reciprocal inhibition ocrurred betweenthe main shoot apex and the outgrowing axillary shoots, withthe balance of inhibition varying with temperature. Apical dominancewas stronger at 10 °C than at 20 °C , but even at 10°C release of apical dominance by decapitation had onlyminor effects on the timing of outgrowth, growth pattern andrate of dry weight aocumulation of the axillary shoots. Dominanceof the main shoot apex by the axillary shoots was stronger at20 °C than at 10 °C. Removal of axillary buds preventeddecline in size and activity of the main shoot apex ard resultedin increased rates of primordium initiation, leaf emergenceand dry weight accumulation in the main shoot. It is suggestedthat a system of reciprocal dominance provides a mechanism formaintaining the characteristic habit of the grass plant andlimits growth in height of vegetative shoots. 在室内25℃下,以菜蛾3龄初幼虫作寄主,研究了菜蛾盘绒茧蜂Cotesia plutellae和半闭弯尾姬蜂Diadegma semiclausum的种间竞争。当寄主供2种蜂同时产卵寄生时,2种蜂各自的寄生率与其单独寄生时无显著差异,合计寄生率比一种蜂单独存在时有所提高,但差异不显著。2种蜂均能产卵寄生已被另一种蜂寄生了的寄主幼虫。当寄主被2种蜂寄生的间隔时间很短(少于10 h)时,所育出的蜂绝大部分(80%以上)为绒茧蜂;当寄主先被绒茧蜂寄生,并饲养2天以上再供弯尾姬蜂寄生时,所育出的全为绒茧蜂;当寄主先被弯尾姬蜂寄生,并饲养2天以上再供绒茧蜂寄生时,寄主幼虫绝大部分不能存活,只有少部分能育出寄生蜂,且多为弯尾姬蜂。当2种蜂的幼虫存在于同一寄主体内时,2种蜂的发育均受到另一种蜂的抑制;绒茧蜂1龄幼虫具有物理攻击能力,能将弯尾姬蜂卵或幼虫致死。这些结果表明,菜蛾盘绒茧蜂与半闭弯尾姬蜂在同一寄主中发育时,前者具有明显的竞争优势。  相似文献

Onseparation, the scale side of the seed is lighter coloured andflatter than the side not previously in contact with the scale.Seeds oriented scale-side-up on a moist surface germinate morerapidly than seeds placed scale-side-down. First-year seedlings of Picea sitchensis were induced to setbuds by transferring them from long days (17 h) to short days(10 h at 20 °C, 12 h night at 12 °C). After 20 shortdays, the seedlings stopped growing in height, the shoot apicaldomes began enlarging and the transverse growth rates of theshoot apical dome tissues increased. For about 25 days thereafterprimordia were produced faster within the developing buds thanat the apices of seedlings which had been kept in long daysto prevent bud-set. Two gregarious parasitoids, Apanteles ruficrus and A. kariyai attack larvae of the common armyworm, Pseudaletia separata. Their growth pattern and growth rate of the parasitoids were not affected by host age at the time of oviposition, even though host weight increased exponentially with age. Consequently, the maximal weight of a single parasitoid larva was nearly constant regardless of host instar parasitized. Parasitoid females laid more eggs in later-instar hosts than in earlier-instar hosts. When parasitized at the same age, heavily parasitized hosts attained a larger mass than lightly parasitized larvae. Therefore, the ratio of the maximal weight of the host to the parasitoid mass was nearly constant. These results indicate that host growth is regulated by the parasitoids.  相似文献

In the decussate plants Alternanthera philoxeroides and Hygrophilasp. the opposite axillary bud primordia are of unequal sizefrom the time of their inception; the larger or + buds lie alongone helix and the smaller or – buds along another (helicoidalsystem). In decapitated plants of Alternanthera both buds grewout, but unequally; if the node was vertically split growthof the two shoots was more equal, and if the + buds were excisedgrowth of the – shoots approximately equalled that ofcontrol + shoots. In decapitated shoots of Hygrophila grownin sterile culture only one bud, the + or larger one, grew outat each of the upper nodes. In excised cultured nodes, also,only the + bud grew out; but if the nodes were split longitudinallyboth buds grew out, initially rather unequally. These experimentssupport the view that the regulation of branching in these specieshas two components, apical dominance and the dominance of thelarger (+) bud over the smaller (–) bud at the same node.The restriction of growth potentiality imposed on the –bud is not permanent but can be modified. Further correlativeeffects on bud outgrowth include those of the subtending leavesand of buds at other nodes.  相似文献

Mistletoes usually have slower rates of photosynthesis thantheir hosts. This study examines CO2assimilation, chlorophyllfluorescence and the chlorophyll content of temperate host–parasitepairs (nine hosts parasitized by Ileostylus micranthus and Carpodetusserratus parasitized by Tupeia antarctica). The hosts of I.micranthus had higher mean annual CO2assimilation (3.59 ±0.41 µmol m-2 s-1) than I. micranthus(2.42 ± 0.20µmol m-2 s-1), and C. serratus(2.41 ± 0.43 µmolm-2 s-1) showed higher CO2assimilation than T. antarctica(0.67± 0.64 µmol m-2 s-1). Hosts saturated at significantlyhigher electron transport rates (ETR) and light levels thanmistletoes. The positive relationship between CO2assimilationand electron transport suggests that the lower CO2assimilationrates in mistletoes are a consequence of lower electron transportrates. When photosynthetic rates, ETR and chlorophyll a /b ratioswere adjusted for photosynthetically active radiation, hostsdid not have significantly higher CO2assimilation (3.21 ±0.37 µmol m-2 s-1) than mistletoes (2.54 ± 0.41µmol m-2 s-1), but still had significantly higher ETRand chlorophyll a / b ratios. The electron transport rates,saturating light and chlorophyll a / b ratios of sun leavesfrom mistletoes were similar to host shade leaves. These responsesindicate that in comparison with their hosts, mistletoe leaveshave the photosynthetic characteristics of the leaves of shadeplants. Vegetative shoots from the base of the crown, and from partsof the tree likely to form male or female buds, were collectedfrom 40–years–old trees of Picea sitchensis (Bong.)Carr. throughout the 1973–4 annual growth cycle. The morphologyand growth rates of the terminal buds on these shoots were assessed. Bud scale primordia were formed most quickly in the female position,at an intermediate rate in the male position and most slowlyin the basal vegetative position during April, May and June.In July and early August the apical meristems swelled to formdomes and continued to grow at the same relative rates in themale, female and basal vegetative positions. Reproductive budswere first morphologically distinct in late August and sporangiaappeared in October. Dormancy, defined by the pause in apicalvolume increase, extended from mid-October to mid–March.Young strobili grew much faster than basal vegetative shootsof the same age between mid–March and bud burst in lateApril. Throughout the growth cycle, external changes in budsize reflected changes in size of the apical meristem, youngstrobihis or young vegetative shoot inside the bud. It is proposed that the rate of growth of an apical meristemmay be causally related to the type of bud which subsequentlydevelops from it. Kinetin (1•10–4 M and 1•10–3 M) was appliedto the plumules of 6-day-old Chenopodium rubrum plants. Effectson growth, anatomical structure and organogenesis in the apicalmeristem were followed. Floral differentiation as affected bykinetin was also investigated in plants induced to flower byshort-day treatment. Kinetin increased mitotic activity in the apical meristems inboth induced and non-induced plants. The effect was most pronouncedin the peripheral and subcentral zone. An increase in nucleolussize and a higher degree of pyroninophilia in the peripheralzone was also observed, indicating a localized promotion ofRNA synthesis. A higher rate of leaf initiation and a stimulationof leaf and stem growth was subse quentiy recorded. The growthof axillary meristems and of bud primordia was promoted onlyat the lower concentration of kinetin (1•10–4 M),in both photoperiodically-induced and non-induced plants. However,the pattern of lateral bud growth differed from that found innormal floral differentiation. In kinetintreated plants, thebud primordia are isolated from the summit of the shoot apexby a succession of rapidly growing leaves. The enhancement ofleaf growth leads to correlative inhibition of axillary budpriniordia and results, finally, in a suppression of floraldifferentiation. The inhibitory effect of kinetin on floweringwas compared with that of auxin. Inhibition of flowering occurredin both cases but is achieved in two different ways.  相似文献

In solitary parasitoids, superparasitism (the allocation ofan egg to an already parasitized host) has a payoff, measuredin offspring produced and costs, measured in eggs and time invested.Solitary parasitoids that are capable of host discriminationmust adopt the strategy that ensures the best use of both theiregg load and available lifetime. In this paper, we develop astate-dependent model defining the optimal strategy of superparasitismfor a solitary parasitoid species with overlapping generations.The fitness measure we use is based on the growth rate of thenumber of genotype copies. The model predicts that the tendencyto superparasitize should increase as the egg load of the parasitoidincreases, or as its life expectancy decreases. The model alsopredicts that under particular conditions wasps should showpartial preferences for parasitized hosts. These predictionswere tested with the parasitoid Venturia canescens (Hymenoptera:Ichneumonidae). The tendency of the wasps to superparasitizein the presence of both healthy and parasitized hosts was correlatedto egg load and access to food before the experiment A complementaryexperiment, where parasitized hosts were given sequentiallyto parasitoids, showed that V. canescens exhibits partial preferencestoward superparasitism. The outgrowth of lateral buds is known to be controlled by theupper shoot tissues, which include the apex, the young leavesand the upper stem. An analysis of the influence of these plantparts on axillary bud elongation in Ipomoea nil was carriedout by various treatments on these specific tissues. A restriction of elongation in the main shoot due to eitherdecapitation or shoot inversion resulted in the release of apicaldominance A non-linear type of compensating growth relationshipwas observed between the 13 cm apical growing region of thestem and the lateral buds. It was determined by decapitation,defoliation and AgNO3 treatments that both the 13 cm stem-growthregion and the young leaves (1–5 cm in length) had a muchgreater inhibitory influence on the outgrowth of specified lateralbuds than did the stem apex (consisting of the terminal 0.5cm of the shoot). The specified lateral buds which were analyzedfor outgrowth were located a number of nodes below the shootapex. The intervening nodes were debudded. Although the importanceof young leaves in the control of apical dominance has beenpreviously recognized, the most significant result from thepresent study with Ipomoea was the strong influence of the 13cm apical growth region of the stem on the out growth of thelateral buds. Dry matter gains and haustorial production of pot-cultured seedlingsof Nuytsia floribunda were assessed after a 12 month periodof association singly with each of a range of potential woodyhost species. One species,Adenanthos cygnorum , of similar sizeto most parasitized hosts, served as measure of response ofNuytsia in a non-benefiting situation. Rated on this basis,all 23 parasitized hosts elicited greater mean dry weights ofNuytsia than when on Adenanthos, and seven of these instanceswere highly significant. Numbers and weights of penetratingand presumably functional haustoria formed on a host were broadlycorrelated with growth benefit to Nuytsia, but there were notableinstances of unusually poor or great benefit from a host relativeto the complement of haustoria involved. Experiments in whichhaustoria-bearing associations of Nuytsia partnered with nodulatedAcacia hosts (Acacia acuminata and A. cyclops) were fed15N2showedsignificant transfer of15N to the parasite, but failed to determinewhether the label had been acquired through haustoria or directlyby Nuytsia roots following turnover of nodule and root residuesof the host in the rooting medium. A parallel study using theunusual non-protein amino acid, djenkolic acid, as a markerof benefit from the djenkolic acid-containing host A. cyclops,showed appearance and progressive build-up of the compound infoliage of Nuytsia over a 6 month period after partnering thespecies in pot culture. Presence of the compound at final harvestin xylem sap of both partners but not in soil solution of thecultures strongly indicated xylem transfer via haustoria asthe principal avenue for N benefit to the parasite.
