Fryns syndrome with atypical findings--with large midline cleft on forehead but normal cranial MRI findings

We report a newborn with Fryns syndrome and atypical findings like a large midline cleft on forehead. Abnormal findings included congenital left diaphragmatic hernia, prominent forehead, hypertelorism, broad nasal bridge, anteverted nostrils, cleft palate, low set ears, tapered fingers, macrocephaly, congenital heart defect, midline defects and renal anomalies. This is the first case that has a midline cleft on forehead with normal cranial MRI findings.     

High-risk HPV DNA detection rate in patients with atypical squamous cells and its relationship to the atypical squamous cell: squamous intraepithelial lesion ratio

OBJECTIVE: To determine if there is any relationship between the atypical squamous cell (ASC):squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL) ratio and high-risk HPV DNA detection rate. STUDY DESIGN: Data on the frequency of various cytologic diagnoses for each pathologist were retrieved from 2002 to 2003. ASC:SIL ratio for each pathologist was calculated. In addition, data related to high-risk HPV detection rate was obtained during the study period. HPV DNA testing was performed using HC II (Digene, Gaithersburg, Maryland U.S.A). Cases with insufficient quantity were excluded. RESULTS: Five pathologists, with experience ranging from 2 to 15 years, reviewed Pap tests during the study period. For the entire laboratory, the ASC:SIL ratio was 2.0, and the high-risk HPV DNA detection rate in ASC specimens was 31%. For individual pathologists, ASC:SIL ratio ranged from 1.2 to 4.0 and high-risk HPV DNA detection rate from 31% to 38%. No significant correlation was noted between the ASC:SIL ratio and high-risk HP DNA detection rate. CONCLUSION: Our ASC:SIL ratios (except for 1 pathologist) and high-risk HPV DNA detection rates were within an acceptable range. We did not observe any association between ASC:SIL ratio and high-risk HPV detection rate.     

Cerro largo: An atypical gravesite in central panama

Previously published gravesites in Central Panama concern the late polychrome periods of Cocle, Veraguas, and Azuero on one hand, and the earliest ceramic and preceramic periods on the other. Cerro Largo has been test‐sampled and appears to yield artifacts of an intermediate nature and may contribute to the development of pre‐polychrome sequences in this region.     

The median forehead flap revisited: the blood supply

In 6 fresh cadavers, an injection study of the facial vessels with disulfine blue dye and Microfil demonstrated visualization of large-caliber vessels of the median forehead skin even when the supraorbital and supratrochlear vessels were interrupted. The results of the study would suggest that the median forehead flap can be elevated without incorporating the supratrochlear vessels, but the flap design should be reserved for those clinical situations where the pedicle must be extensively mobilized, e.g., reconstruction of the nasal tip and columella and the presence of a low-lying frontal hairline.     

An unusual stress-induced gastric lesion

An unusual type of gastric lesions, clearly different from erosions, was produced in rats by prolonged immobilization and application of adrenaline at the first and the third hour of stress. The lesions are large, round, highly hyperaemic elevations of the glandular part of the rat stomach. Necrosis of the superficial 2/3 of the mucosa with haemorrhages and leucocytic infiltration as well as marked oedema, focal haemorrhages, necrotic vasculitis and darkly stained phagocytes in the submucosa are the most prominent histological features of it. Some special conditions seem to be necessary for the development of this "superficial gastric necrosis".     

Captive birds on Dutch Mauritius: bad-tempered parrots,warty pigeons and notes on other native animals

During the occupation of Mauritius by the Dutch in the seventeenth century, live dodos and other animals were transported to the east and west as curiosities and gifts by the Dutch East India Company. How these animals managed to survive these journeys, when human casualties on-board ship were so high, has remained a mystery. Here, we present for the first time a translation of the recently discovered report of Johannes Pretorius, who stayed on Mauritius from 1666 to 1669. Pretorius kept a number of now extinct birds in captivity, which was probably an experiment to ascertain their captive requirements prior to transportation. He also provides the first ecological details of some of the now-extinct birds and Mauritian giant tortoises, the impact of introduced animals, and highlights how little of the interior of Mauritius had actually been explored during this time.     

Vibration‐mediated territoriality in the warty birch caterpillar Drepana bilineata

Abstract The warty birch caterpillar Drepana bilineata produces two distinct types of vibrational signals (mandible drumming and anal scraping) during interactions with conspecifics. Vibrational signalling is characterized using standard and high‐speed videography synchronized with laser‐doppler vibrometry, and behavioural experiments test the hypothesis that signalling functions to advertise occupancy of birch (Betula) leaves. Drumming involves raising the head and striking the leaf with the sharp edges of the open mandibles. Anal scraping involves dragging a pair of specialized oar‐shaped setae against the leaf surface. Staged encounters between leaf residents and conspecific intruders result in the resident signalling, with rates increasing as the intruder moves closer. Intruders signal significantly less often than residents. Conflicts are typically resolved within a few minutes, with the resident winning in 61% of the trials, and the intruder winning in 6%. Contests that last more than 30 min are deemed ‘ties’ and comprise the remaining 33% of trials. The results support the hypothesis that vibrational signals function to advertise leaf occupancy. Vibrational communication is believed to be widespread in Drepanoidea caterpillars, but has only been described in two species to date: D. bilineata (present study) and Drepana arcuata. It is proposed that differences in territorial behaviour and signalling between these species are related to their relative investments in silk leaf mats and shelters. The proximate and ultimate bases for the evolution of vibrational communication in caterpillars are discussed.     

An unusual pontine mass lesion.

A 27-year-old Puerto Rican man presented to Yale-New Haven Hospital with a six-week history of left-sided headache, diplopia, and drooping of the left side of his face. Cerebrospinal fluid examination showed a lymphocytic pleocytosis and a CT scan of the brain revealed an unusual intrapontine mass lesion requiring systemic antifungal therapy. This case emphasizes many of the diagnostic and therapeutic considerations required for effective therapy of fungal disease in the central nervous system.     

An atypical BAR domain protein in autophagy

The sorting nexin Atg20 interacts with the selective macroautophagy/autophagy scaffolding protein Atg11, suggesting an important role for Atg20 in the initiation of selective autophagy. To explore this possibility, we recently investigated the structure and function of Atg20 using a variety of biophysical and yeast genetic approaches. Our data demonstrate that the BAR domain of Atg20 interacts with Snx4/Atg24 to form an asymmetric heterodimeric BAR domain complex. Atg20 also contains a long intrinsically disordered N terminus that facilitates binding to Atg11 and a large 89-amino acid insertion in its BAR domain, which we have termed the BAR-GAP. This BAR-GAP region is a unique feature of Atg20 and has not been observed in other BAR domains. Furthermore, the BAR-GAP of Atg20 contains an amphipathic helix which is required for membrane binding, tubulation and autophagy. Our findings demonstrate the important role of this novel region in autophagy.
