Breeding success in sympatric mallard Anas platyrhynchos , teal A. crecca and wigeon A. penelope in a boreal watershed in Finland was studied for 12 years. Benthic and surface-emerging prey animals were trapped to obtain annual indices of food abundance. Mallard and teal were equally abundant over the years, being roughly twice as numerous as wigeon.
Pair density, brood:pair ratio and duckling:pair ratio were used to test the hypothesis that per capita breeding success decreases in a density-dependent fashion as either pair density or the number of nesting pairs per available food unit increases. In mallard we found no density-dependent patterns at all. In teal per capita brood production decreased as prey animals became relatively scarcer, but this interpretation may not be robust. In wigeon, however, there were two independent significant patterns of direct density-dependence in a temporal succession, i.e. between pair density and per capita brood production in the early part of the breeding season, and then between per capita abundance of surface-emerging insect prey and the number of ducklings per pair. Despite wide dietary overlap and frequent co-occurrence on single lakes among species in the guild, we found no evidence for interspecific density-dependent effects. We hypothesize that there is no or infrequent food limitation for breeding dabblers in this system, and that behavior may be the process behind the pattern of density-dependence in wigeon.  相似文献

Comparative studies of sympatric species are essential for understanding behavioral and ecological adaptation as well as the mechanisms that can reduce resource competition to allow coexistence.Fran?ois' langurs(Trachypithecus francoisi) and Assamese macaques(Macaca assamensis) are sympatric primate species found in the limestone seasonal rainforests of Nonggang Nature Reserve,southwestern Guangxi, China. To explore their different adaptation strategies, we collected data on diet using scan sampling at 15-min intervals. Our results revealed that Fran?ois' langurs showed a more flexible diet composition than Assamese macaques.Fran?ois' langurs increased dietary diversity and mature leaf consumption in response to seasonal scarcity of preferred young leaves and fruits, whereas Assamese macaques relied heavily on young bamboo leaves(Indocalamus calcicolus) in most months.These variations reflect the differences in digestive physiology, morphology, and the temporal and spatial distribution of food resources.  相似文献

Sympatric Malaysian leaf-monkeys, Presbytis obscura and Presbytis melalophos show quantitative differences in their use of different locomotor patterns during daily activities. P. obscura primarily moves quadrupedally along large boughs; P. melalophos relies more on leaping between smaller supports. P. melalophos also uses forelimb suspension more than does P. obscura. Comparison of the muscular anatomy of the shoulder, arm, trunk, hip and thigh show numerous statistically significant differences between the two species in relative mass of individual muscles and in details of muscular origin and insertion. In almost all instances these differences accord with the types of differences in muscular anatomy predictable from either biomechanical analyses of locomotor behavior or comparative anatomical studies of other mammalian species.  相似文献

A general prediction of the neutral theory of evolution is that genetic diversity should correlate positively with effective population size. We show here that diversity across eight microsatellite loci was consistently and substantially lower in one common amphibian (Bufo bufo) than in another with similar life history traits (Rana temporaria) despite B. bufo having the larger breeding assemblage sizes. However, B. bufo breeding assemblages were much more highly differentiated than those of R. temporaria according to both Fst and Rst estimators. These differences occurred in shared habitats across identical geographical distances. The patterns of genetic diversity and differentiation detected in these two species were probably a consequence of high gene flow in R. temporaria but much lower gene flow among the larger but more dispersed B. bufo assemblages. These observations highlight the difficulty of defining the boundaries of wild populations, and show how two broadly similar species can exhibit very different population dynamics.  相似文献

Electrophoretic patterns of hemoglobin were observed in 61 samples from gibbons and in 29 samples from leaf-monkeys. In gibbons, three hemoglobin types, involving two main molecules with a minor component, were found. The two gibbon hemoglobins were presumed to differ in their corresponding beta chain. It is characteristic that each of the three hemoglobin types was present in three different species of gibbons. In three species of leaf-monkey, only one hemoglobin was observed, showing electrophoretic mobility very similar to human Hb-A.  相似文献

The spatial distribution and population dynamics of Trichodorus primitivus and Paratrichodorus pachydermus were studied at a Scottish nursery site in replicated plots. Each plot was split and half was fumigated with dichloropropene. The numbers of males, females and juveniles under Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), grass/clover (Lolium perenne/Trifolium repens) and fallow in non-fumigated and fumigated subplots were recorded at 10 cm intervals to a depth of 50 cm every 4 months for 3 years. In the non-fumigated subplots the population densities of T. primitivus under each crop and the fallow soil were similar at the beginning and end of the experiment but P. pachydermus responded differentially, decreasing in fallow soils and increasing under pine. The ratios of adult: juvenile and male: female for the two species were not significantly affected by crop or sampling depth. T. primitivus was the more numerous species except under pine where P. pachydermus gradually became dominant during the study. Both species were present in all the depth samples but showed an aggregated distribution with different modal depths. The depth at which most P. pachydermus were found was shallower than for T. primitivus. Differences in the distribution and behaviour of the two species were found indicating how the two species could co-exist or succeed each other. Fumigation with dichloropropene decreased the trichodorid populations to < 1 per 200 g soil to a depth of 50 cm. The relative development of the populations under the different crops and fallow soil were similar to those in non-fumigated soils.  相似文献

The effect of population density on reproduction as well as the oviposition modes of two sympatric dung beetle species, Aphodius haroldianus (a low fecundity/high parental effort species) and A. elegans (a high fecundity/low parental effort species) was studied at a pasture in central Japan from 1982 to 1986.
  1. The adult population density of A. haroldianus was high (>40 per dung pat). The density of A. elegans was low (<5 per dung pat). Oviposition of A. haroldianus was suppressed above the density of about 10 adults of conspecifics but not affected by the density of other species. The intra- and interspecific density effects on oviposition were not detected in A. elegans.
  2. The number of A. haroldianus adults per pat decreased with dung age, while that of A. elegans increased until sixth day after deposition and then decreased. The number of eggs laid per pat was not different between 1-day-and 3-day-old pats for A. haroldianus. However, more eggs of A. elegans were found in 3-day-old pats than in 1-day-old ones.
  3. In the both species, the amplitude of population fluctuations was not remarkable; the maximum/minimum ratio for five years being 2.3 for A. haroldianus and 2.9 for A. elegans. Different density dependent processes were suggested to function for the small fluctuation of population density between the two species, i.e. intraspecific density effect on oviposition for A. haroldianus and contest type competition for food among larvae of A. elegans.

Recent studies of ungulates have revealed that selective foraging seems to be an important mechanism by which they can affect the structure and species composition of the plant community, and thus quantity (dry mass) and quality (chemical composition) of litter available for decomposers. Such changes in litter production may be especially important in N-limited systems like boreal forests. We chose moose ( Alces alces ) as study species to investigate this mechanism. Moose browse mainly in the tree and shrub layers year round, and because of their wide distribution and often high population densities, they can have a significant effect on litter production of trees and shrubs in Swedish boreal forests. The effects of herbivores may also vary along productivity gradients. We therefore simulated browsing and urine and fecal deposition corresponding to 4 different moose densities in exclosures along a pre-existing forest productivity gradient. Both litter quantity (g dry mass per m2 and year) and contributions of C and N (g dry mass per m2 and year) decreased with increasing level of simulated moose density. High moose densities over extended time can therefore reduce N contributions to soil and therefore eventually reduce site productivity in Swedish boreal forests. This effect of moose was mainly a result of decreased litter quantity, because contradictory to studies from North America, litter quality (C:N ratio and N contribution per mass unit of litter) was not affected by level of simulated moose density.  相似文献

Kinship plays a significant role in shaping the social and geneticstructures of many vertebrate populations. Evidence of kinship,however, may be substantially influenced by the spatial andtemporal scales over which co-ancestry is monitored. For example,while data on social group composition may yield little indicationof relatedness among reproductive partners, data on the demographicstructure of a population may reveal considerable shared ancestryamong mates. We explored relationships among social group composition,individual movements, and population-level patterns of kinshipusing data from a 7-year field study of the colonial tuco-tuco(Ctenomys sociabilis), a group-living subterranean rodent thatis endemic to southwestern Argentina. Our analyses indicatethat social groups are composed of 1–4 generations ofclosely related females and a single, immigrant male, suggestingthat reproductive partners are not related to one another. Monitoringindividual movements, however, revealed that (1) most male dispersaloccurs within the local population and (2) most new social groupsare founded by females born in the study population, indicatingthat individuals reared in different burrow systems may shareconsiderable co-ancestry. Simulation analyses revealed thatup to 67% of reproductive partnerships consist of animals thatshare co-ancestry within the last 5–7 generations. Thus,while analyses of social group composition provide little evidenceof kinship among reproductive partners, population-level analysesof dispersal and group formation suggest that co-ancestry amongmates is common. These findings have important implicationsfor interpreting social interactions and genetic structure inthis species.  相似文献

Abstract:  Parasitism was investigated in sympatric populations of three invasive gracillariid leaf miners in Europe, Cameraria ohridella , Phyllonorycter robiniella and Phyllonorycter platani to test the hypotheses that C. ohridella is less heavily parasitized by native parasitoids and attacked by fewer species than the two other invasive species. In all regions investigated, C. ohridella showed a lower parasitism rate, and its parasitoid complex was poorer in species than those of either Phyllonorycter spp. Comparisons were made between sympatric populations of C. ohridella on its main host tree, Aesculus hippocastanum , and an occasional host, Acer pseudoplatanus . Parasitism rates were similarly low and composed of the same parasitoid species on both trees. In contrast, a sympatric population of Phyllonorycter geniculella , a native species mining A. pseudoplatanus , was heavily parasitized by a totally different parasitoid complex. These results suggest that the low parasitism in C. ohridella by native polyphagous leaf miner parasitoids is due neither to its host tree, nor to a problem of synchronization between the phenology of the pest and that of its parasitoids. Instead, it probably results from the inability of the native parasitoids to locate, attack, or develop on a new host that does not have any native congener in Europe.  相似文献

Xeropicta vestalis , a polymorphic helicelline as regards its shell-banding pattern, has shells that closely resemble those of Theba pisana , a helicine. These resemblances are found mainly in Israel's coastal plain, where distribution of the two species overlaps to a certain extent, and it hardly ever occurs in Israel's hilly region where T. pisana is missing. In the Jordan Valley however (where T. pisana is missing also), some T. pisana -like forms of X. vestalis may occur. Because X. vestalis is smaller than T. pisana , the resemblance refers mainly to juveniles and small adults of the latter, and less to large adults.
We examined whether there are any interspecific relations between the frequencies of visually analogous morphs, in mixed populations. No such relations was found. Further, mixed populations are so unstable in time that the chances of building up any such relation is highly unlikely.
It is difficult to accept that there are any interrelationships whatsoever (of apostatic selection as well as mimicry) between T. pisana and X. vestalis as regards their shell banding polymorphism. The convergence between the two species appears to represent parallel, but not interspecific forces of natural selection.  相似文献

The total nitrogen and amino acid composition of seven Azolla strains were compared at four different growth phases. Total nitrogen content of the individual strains ranged from 2.6% to 5.7% of dry matter and was not significantly influenced by growth phase or population density. The concentration of the sixteen amino acids determined was maximal during the linear growth stage and specific differences occurred among Azolla strains. AnAzolla microphylla strain was the best source of amino acids and anA. filiculoides strain the poorest under the cultural conditions used. The chemical index score demonstrated the potential of some species, such as theA. microphylla strain, as contributor of protein for animals. Strains of other species, such asA. filiculoides, had several limiting amino acids and appear more suited for use solely as a green manure. All Azolla strains contained a similar proportion of essential (55%) and non-essential (45%) amino acids. Leucine, lysine, arginine and phenylanine+tyrosine were the predominant essential amino acids whereas the sulfur containing amino acids (methionine and cystine) were present in smaller amounts.  相似文献

The cactus-yeast-Drosophila system is a model system in evolutionary biology, and the participating saprotrophic microorganisms represent one of the most thoroughly studied microbial communities. However, much of the cactus-dominated regions of South America, home to endemic versions of this classical system, remain understudied. A combined morpho-physiological and molecular approach was employed to identify the fungal members of the cactus-yeast-Drosophila system in western Argentina. We identified twenty one species of saprotrophic organisms in the necroses of Opuntia sulphurea and Trichocereus terscheckii in a region of sympatry, where both cacti are exploited by cactophilic Drosophila. After excluding opportunistic isolates, we determined that the saprobe community of O. sulphurea was composed of eight species (including the first consideration of filamentous fungi as community members), whereas the community of T. terscheckii represented a subgroup of the former. We explain this nested pattern by considering the physiological and ecological attributes of both hosts and vectors involved.  相似文献

On exposed rocky shores in Galicia (northwest Spain), a striking polymorphism exists between two ecotypes (RB and SU) of Littorina saxatilis that occupy different levels of the intertidal zone and exhibit an incomplete reproductive isolation. The setting has been suggested to represent ongoing sympatric speciation by ecological adaptation of the two ecotypes to their respective habitats. In this article we address whether or not the ecotypes have developed their own population structures in response to the rigors of their corresponding environments and life histories. We analyzed four to five allozymic loci from three surveys of the same sites, spanning a 14-year period. An experimental design including three localities with two transects per locality and three shore levels allowed studying temporal and spatial population structure and estimation of effective population sizes (N(e)), neighborhood sizes (N(n)), and migration rates (m). Genetic differentiation was significantly lower in RB populations (theta(ST) = 0.067) than in SU ones (theta(ST) = 0.124). Mean estimates of N(e), N(n), and m did not differ significantly between ecotypes, but local ecotype differences in migration between the two closest localities (larger migration rates in RB than in SU populations) could explain the pattern in population differentiation.  相似文献

Body mass is a key determinant of fitness components in many organisms, and adult mass varies considerably among individuals within populations. These variations have several causes, involve temporal and spatial factors, and are not yet well understood. We use long-term data from 20 roe deer cohorts (1977-96) in a 2600 ha study area (Chizé, western France) with two habitats contrasting in quality (rich oak forest in the North versus poor beech forest in the South) to analyse the effects of both cohort and habitat quality on adult mass (i.e. median body mass between 4 and 10 years of age) of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). Cohort strongly influenced the adult body mass of roe deer in both sexes: males born in 1994 were 5.2 kg heavier when aged between 4 and 10 years old than males born in 1986, while females born in 1995 were 4.7 kg heavier between 4 and 10 years old than females born in 1982. For a given cohort, adult males were, on average, 0.9 kg heavier in the rich oak forest than in the poor beech forest. A similar trend occurred for adult females (0.5 kg heavier in the oak forest). The effects of cohort and habitat were additive and accounted for ca. 40% of the variation observed in the adult mass of roe deer at Chizé (males: 41.2%; females: 40.2%). Population density during the spring of the birth accounted for about 35% of cohort variation, whereas rainfall in May-June had no effect. Such delayed effects of density at birth on adult body mass probably affect population dynamics, and might constitute a mechanism by which delayed density-dependence occurs in ungulate populations.  相似文献

Species richness of phytoplankton of the Pitchavaram mangals was high. There were 82 species constituted by 67 species of diatoms, 12 species of dinoflagellates and 3 species of bluegreen algae. The diatoms formed the bulk with 72% followed by the dinoflagellates with 15%, in which there were autochthonous (temporary and permanent) and allochthonous forms. Phytoplankton population density exhibited a wide seasonal fluctuation with the minimum during monsoon and the maximum during summer, suggesting the possible differential influence of various environmental factors.  相似文献
