Ringed seals ( Phoca hispida botnica ), from the Bothnian Bay, north-eastern Baltic Sea were examined for acanthocephalan parasites in 1977–1982, and specimens from Lake Saimaa in south-eastern Finland ( P. h. saimensis ) were examined in 1980–1981. The two seal stocks have been isolated from Arctic stock for 11,000 years and from each other for 8,000 years. Corynosoma strumosum and C. semerme were found in the Baltic seals, but only C. strumosum in those from the lake.
Eighty two of the ringed seals caught in the Bothnian Bay were infected with both Corynosoma species, one with a single infection of C. strumosum and one with C. semerme in autumn. The total number of C. semerme increased in relation to the number of C. strumosum in each set of seals both in autumn and spring. Corynosoma semerme was dominant in most seals in spring, but in only an average of 60% in autumn. The predominance of C. strumosum in 40% of the autumn material (range 33–80%) is of interest because species ratio favouring C. strumosum is not found in any more heavily infected paratenic fish host of Corynosoma in the Bothnian Bay. The change in the Corynosoma species ratio of seals in autumn may be explained by their exceptional feeding behaviour at this time of the year (total or partial fasting) and the suggested longevity of C. strumosum as compared with C. semerme . The stability of the acanthocephalan populations in ringed seals is documented.  相似文献

Because of the likelihood that Corynosoma magdaleni Montreuil, 1958. has been confused with C. strumosum (Rudolphi, 1802) in reports of parasites from seals and to clarify its distribution in the Baltic Sea, acanthocephalans from 26 young gray seals from the southwestern Finnish archipelago (western Baltic Sea) were examined. All harbored C. semerme (Forssell. 1904). In addition to C. semerme, 12 had both C. strumosum and C. magdaleni, 3 had only C. strumosum, and 9 had only C. magdaleni. Most anatomical structures of C. strumosum are similar to, but larger than, those of C. magdaleni. The most conspicuous differences are the longer and more robust trunk of C. strumosum, the routinely longer proboscis (mean, 653 vs. 476 microm) and larger proboscis hook (mean, 69 vs. 58 microm) of C. strumosum, and the greater extent of ventral trunk spines (mean, 61 vs. 47%) in C. magdaleni. In addition, C. strumosum consistently possesses 18 longitudinal rows of proboscis hooks, whereas C. magdaleni has 17-23, with 20 being the usual number by far. In seals aged 3.6 mo, on average, C. strumosum was more prevalent and abundant than was C. magdaleni, whereas in seals of age 2.0-3.0 mo the reverse was true, with C. strumosum being nearly absent. These differences might reveal the age-dependent food habits of the very young seals. No site segregation was found between C. strumosum and C. magdaleni in the small intestine, but they clearly segregated from C. semerme, which occurred mainly in the cecum, large intestine, and rectum. All species matured equally well in gray seals, with 62, 67, and 53% of the C. magdaleni, C. strumosum, and C. semerme, respectively, comprising gravid worms (possessing eggs with fully formed acanthors).  相似文献

Species of Corynosoma (Acanthocephala) are distributed worldwide as parasites of marine mammals and sea birds. Species diagnosis is based on morphological characters, including the size and number of hooks in the proboscis and the number of spines in the dorsal and ventral regions of the body. We inferred the phylogenetic relationships of 10 nominal species of Corynosoma through analysis of internal transcribed spacers (ITS-1, ITS-2) and 5.8S ribosomal RNA sequences. Nucleotide distances between species of Corynosoma ranged from 0.4 to 11% for ITS sequences. Maximum parsimony and likelihood analyses indicated that species of Corynosoma that inhabit hosts in the marine environment form a monophyletic assemblage, but yielded conflicting hypotheses for the relationship of Corynosoma cetaceum to other members of the genus. However, parsimony and likelihood analyses were consistent for many Corynosoma sister species relationships of (e.g., C. australe plus C. bullosum, C. validum plus C. villosum, C. caspicum plus C. magdaleni, and C. enhydri plus C. strumosum). This phylogenetic framework was used to evaluate taxonomic controversies concerning C. cetaceum and C. caspicum.  相似文献

The occurrence, location and sex ratio of Corynosoma strumosum (Acanthoceophala: Polymorphidae) from 26 juvenile grey seals, Halichoerus grypus, by-caught from around the Inishkea Islands, Co. Mayo, from March to June 1997 were recorded. The location of C. strumosum within the seal did not vary, with all worms being found in the small intestine. The prevalence of infection was 100%, with no other acanthocephalan species being recorded. The mean abundance was 416 (range 80-846) C. strumosum per seal. There was no significant change in abundance by month. The sex ratio of mature female to mature male parasites was 1.2:1. The lengths of female and male worms did not differ significantly.  相似文献

Infective stages of helminths of 5 species that occur as adults in marine mammals were found in burbot, Lota lota (L.) (Gadidae), from the lower Kuskokwim River (southwestern Alaska): Diphyllobothrium alascense Rausch et Williamson, 1958; Pyramicocephalus phocarum (Fabricius, 1780); Corynosoma strumosum (Rudolphi, 1801); Corynosoma semerme (Forsell, 1904); and Pseudoterranova decipiens (Krabbe, 1878). Some larval stages were obtained also from smelt, Osmerus mordax dentex Steindachner, an anadromous fish important as prey of burbot. Burbot, which are freshwater fish, could become paratenic hosts of those helminths by means of at least 3 interactions: by consuming marine fishes in brackish waters at river mouths, by feeding on marine fishes that enter lower reaches of rivers, or by preying on anadromous fishes as they migrate up rivers. Consumption of burbot by people may result in infection by helminths of marine origin; of those recorded, only P. decipiens may be significantly pathogenic. Attempts to rear P. phocarum in dogs were unsuccessful. Plerocercoids of D. alascense, of very small size and found only in the gastric lumen of burbot, readily infected dogs. For study of their development, strobilae were obtained at intervals of 48 hr to 32 days postinfection. In heavy infections, some strobilae developed slowly, while others underwent rapid development.  相似文献

Material comprising 3167 specimens of the parasite Cystidicola farionis was assembled from 1741 individuals of the sea-spawning whitefish, Coregonus nasus in the shallow northeastern and deeper central areas of the Bothnian Bay. Occasional parasites were found in the immature fish (≦ 175 mm), but infection increased in the two larger classes as the fish aged, reaching 27% in the northeastern area, and as much as 67% in the southern area. This difference is explained partly by the more frequent feeding on Pontoporeia affinis , the intermediate host for the parasite, the deeper waters extending nearer the coast in the majority of the central and southern Bothnian Bay. The increased intensity of infection with age does not vary significantly between the areas studied. No clear seasonal fluctuations in the prevalence or intensity of infection could be found.  相似文献

A total of 206 river-spawning whitefish Coregonus lavaretus (L.) from the Bothnian Bay was investigated for food objects and acanthocephalans in the years 1975–78. The only acanthocephalan species found was Metechinorhynchus salmonis (Müller 1780), the total number of which was 1295.
The whitefish is shown to be highly susceptible to infection by M. salmonis , with as many as 88·9% of specimens infected in a sample in June 1978, although the mean intensity was only 8·9 parasites per host. The river-spawning whitefish does not favour the intermediate host, Pontoporeia affinis , in its summer diet in the Bothnian Bay preferring to feed on eggs and molluscs, so that the incidence of M. salmonis infection decreases to 33·3% by the middle of summer. This is further reduced in the late summer by the fast associated with the migration to their upriver spawning grounds. The fact that the other acanthocephalan inhabiting the river-spawning whitefish in the southern Gulf of Bothnia, Echinorhynchus gadi Müller, 1776 is not to be found in the Bothnian Bay population suggests that the fish captured in spring have remained in the Bothnian Bay throughout the winter.  相似文献

海岸带既是区域经济发展的黄金地带,亦是陆海系统交互胁迫的敏感区域,快速城镇化与工业化导致海岸带关键生态系统服务受损、生态网络格局紊乱、珍稀物种安全保障空间萎缩等重大生态安全问题。以闽三角海岸带珍稀物种-栖息地系统为研究对象,从“多物种-多生境-多尺度”视角出发,基于陆海统筹理念系统评估了闽三角海岸带珍稀物种-栖息地系统的脆弱性,建立了基于物种水平的海岸带生态保护与修复网络,构建了海岸带陆海统筹生态安全“一张图”。研究结果表明:(1)高强度围填海驱动下,闽三角红树林与水鸟栖息地脆弱性显著增加,高脆弱区域主要集中于九龙江河口、厦门同安湾和泉州湾;(2)闽三角生态安全网络由12条水鸟迁徙廊道和11个生态节点组成,其中影响陆海统筹生态安全的生态节点4个,预警生态节点3个;(3)闽三角海岸带未来安全韧性生境(水鸟栖息地与文昌鱼、中国鲎低脆弱生境较密集的区域)分布于云霄红树林保护区、东山岛近岸、九龙江河口、厦门大嶝海域、围头湾、深沪湾。本研究能够为设计规划未来韧性海岸带“受损海水-滨海湿地-珍稀物种”一体化修复与保护的生态安全格局,保障陆海统筹生态安全提供理论支撑和一体化解决方案。  相似文献

Synopsis The coastal fish assemblages of Wemindji, eastern James Bay, were studied in 1987 and 1988 to describe seasonal utilization of the Maquatua River estuary and the adjacent coastal waters by marine and anadromous fishes. Fish diversity was low (11 sp.) and experimental gill net catches were highly variable between sites in the estuary and coastal waters, and also seasonally at a given site. During summer, the estuarine fishes were numerically dominated by two marine species, the fourhorn sculpin,Myoxocephalus quadricornis, and the slender eelblenny,Lumpenus fabricii, and also by juvenile cisco,Coregonus artedii, and juvenile lake whitefish,C. clupeaformis. In coastal waters, three marine species were abundant: the shorthorn sculpin,M. scorpius, the arctic sculpin,M. scorpioides and the Greenland cod.Gadus ogac. In contrast with the estuary, large (> 270 mm) cisco and lake whitefish were abundant in coastal waters indicating extensive movements of these species in James Bay during the summer. Distribution patterns were influenced by a combination of physical conditions (salinity and temperature) and biological characteristics (habitat choice, migration and reproduction) depending on the season.  相似文献

Studies on the zooplankton community of the Bothnian Bay (BB), the northernmost basin of the Baltic Sea, were carried out in 1976–78. Only 8–14 taxa dominated in the zooplankton community. The highest abundances and biomasses occurred during the warmest period or immediately afterwards, in July–September. The production of zooplankton was estimated to be 3.1–7.8 g C · m−2. a−1 in the coastal area and 2.5–3.6 g C · m−2 · a−1 in the open sea. During the short growing season (June–September) the biomass turnover took place in about 11 days. The productivity of zooplankton is discussed in relation to available food of both autochthonous and allochthonous origin and compared with the other parts of the Baltic Sea.  相似文献

We used electrophoretically identified material to assess the geographical distributions, life cycles and interspecific hybridization of two sibling species of the Mysis relicta species group (sp. I and sp. II) in the northern Baltic region. In the Gulf of Finland, sp. I prevails in inshore waters and sp. II in the open sea; the distributions overlap in the outer archipelago zone. In the Gulf of Bothnia, only sp. II was found in the southern part (Bothnian Sea), whereas the two species coexist throughout the northerly Bothnian Bay. Both the local and large-scale distributions are salinity-related, but salinity alone does not explain the differences. The two species exhibit different patterns of geographical variation in their life histories. In strict sympatry in the north they have identical two-year life cycles with winter breeding. Further south (Gulf of Finland), sp. I exhibits a predominantly one-year winter-breeding cycle, whereas sp. II breeds throughout the year. The patterns comply with the concept of a great phenotypic flexibility and environmental control of life history characteristics in the Mysis relicta group, and make a contrast to the stable life cycle of the congeneric M. mixta. F1 hybrids between the two M. relicta group species were found at a low frequency (0.6%) in the Bothnian Bay, but not in other areas of sympatry. Quantitative estimations of spring migrating fish have been made in the mouth part of the small coastal river Ängerån which flows into the northern Bothnian Sea (63°35N, 19°50E). In 1981 nearly 3 000 fish were counted ascending to the spawning grounds in the lower reaches of the Ängerån. These species, such as pike, perch, roach and ide, adapted to the oligohaline environment in the Bothnian Sea for most of the year, migrate to spawn in the coastal stream. The reason for these migrations can be interpreted to indicate that the Ängerån offers more favourable water temperature conditions at spawning time compared with the Bothnian Sea, which is ice-covered up to the beginning of May. The most important result of the investigation in the Ängerån is that these fish species, in the same way as the salmonids, return to theirhome-stream every year as adults.Andreasson & Petersson (1982) listed 69 species of fish in the oligohaline Gulf of Bothnia (Table 1) where salinity varies from 2 near the mouth of the River Torneäly to 6 in the vicinity of the Åland Islands (Fig. 1). The fish fauna comprises freshwater and marine species, fish migrating between brackish and freshwater rivers and streams, and recently introduced non-endogenous species.Andreasson & Petersson (1982) designated only five species as anadromous migrators, whereas our studies show that 11 species migrate from the sea to spawn in the Ängerån, a small river discharging into the northern Bothnian Sea (Fig. 2). Earlier reports on these migrations have been given by Berglund (1978) and Johnson (1978, 1982) and for another small stream in the area by Berg (1982).The present paper describes the annual spring migrations of pike, perch, roach and ide between the northern Bothnian Sea and the Ängerån, for the year 1981.  相似文献

An unarmored dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides has formed red tides responsible for fish mass mortalities especially in coastal areas of western Japan and southern Korea almost every summer to autumn. In laboratory culture, the optimum temperature for growth of the species is ca. 27 °C. Since the species cannot survive in water of temperatures of less than 10 °C, it was considered to over-winter in some certain regions as a motile form or resting cyst, and expand its distribution after the temperature increases to a level tolerable for growth. To determine the over-wintering regions and migration pattern of C. polykrikoides, occurrences of the motile cells were surveyed in the coastal and offshore areas of western Kyushu, Japan and south coast of the Korean Peninsula from April 2006 to August 2008. Cells of C. polykrikoides were found at 14 sites during the investigated period. Motile cells occurred throughout the year in Usuka Bay, Hirado of West Japan. From offshore regions of the Goto Islands and off Shin-Nagasaki Fishing Port, motile cells of C. polykrikoides were first detected from late May, and continuously occurred until February in Nama Bay of the Kami-Goto Islands. This first appearance was before red tides of C. polykrikoides reported at coastal areas in western Kyushu. In Korea, this species was first observed in May and disappeared after October in 2007. These occurrence patterns imply that Usuka Bay in Hirado is one of the over-wintering regions in western Kyushu, and also this species is possibly transported into the northern part of the East China Sea by the Tsushima Warm Current every year.  相似文献

Corynosoma strumosum (Acanthocephala), a widespread parasite of pinnipeds, is reported in marine foraging North American mink (Neogale vison) and river otter (Lontra canadensis) on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. This is the first confirmed case of infection by C. strumosum in river otters on the west coast of North America and may be the first confirmed case of infection in wild North American mink; C. strumosum has previously been reported in river otters in Europe (Lutra lutra) and in farmed mink fed with marine fish. We also detected a case of acanthocephalan associated peritonitis in a juvenile mink. Furthermore, though infections with Corynosoma spp. are often assumed to be accidental in mustelids, some C. strumosum individuals found in mink showed signs of reproductive activity. These findings indicate that mink may be a competent definitive host and represent a reservoir in coastal habitats although further research is needed to confirm this. Investigating whether river otters may be competent hosts and determine the prevalence of infection in coastal populations would determine the potential implications of C. strumosum for coastal otters and minks. Our report indicates that mink and possibly river otter living in coastal areas are vulnerable to this previously unreported parasitic infection with mortality risk, at least in juvenile individuals.  相似文献

The possession of genital spines has been considered as a key taxonomic trait to differentiate Corynosoma from other genera of the Polymorphidae. However, Corynosoma currently consists of 2 groups of species with clear ecological and morphological divergences: the "marine" group (with ca. 30 species) infects mammals and piscivorous birds in the marine realm, whereas the "freshwater" group (with ca. 7 species) infects waterfowl in continental waters. Species from these groups differ in shape of body and neck, trunk spination, lemnisci length and shape, testes arrangement, and number and shape of cement glands. We tested whether species from these 2 groups formed a monophyletic assemblage based on a phylogenetic analysis by using 15 morphological characters. We also included species of Andracantha, Polymorphus, and Hexaglandula with which potential taxonomic conflicts could most likely arise. We obtained 108 equally most parsimonious trees of 32 steps, with a consistency index (CI) = 0.59, and a retention index (RI) = 0.82. The strict consensus tree indicated that the "freshwater" species of Corynosoma form a monophyletic assemblage closely related to some species of Polymorphus, whereas the "marine" species of Corynosoma are grouped together with Andracantha. Accordingly, Corynosoma is not a monophyletic assemblage, and Pseudocorynosoma n. gen. is proposed for the "freshwater" species of Corynosoma. This decision was strongly supported by (1) a functional comparison of foretrunk muscles between species of Polymophus, Andracantha, and Corynosoma; (2) a multivariate morphometric study of proboscis characters and egg size; and (3) an analysis of ecological patterns of host-parasite relationships.  相似文献

Investigations carried out in a coastal stream flowing to the Northern Bothnian Sea (Ängerån, 63°35'N, 19°50'E) have shown a high drift rate of mayfly nymphs towards the coastal areas. The nymphal development takes place in the estuaries with low salinity (conductivity between 47 and 9800 μS; salinity between 0 and 4–5%0). After the emergence (May/June) the adults fly from the coastal areas to lay their eggs in the stream biotope in the Ängerån. There thus appears to be a colonization cycle between the coastal stream and adjacent coastal areas. The migration movements of downstream drift and the compensatory upstream directed flight are interpreted as asurvival strategy of the species concerned.  相似文献

A modified strip census of basking ringed seals in the Bothnian Bay was carried out during the last week of April and the first week of May 1988. Of the total ice covered area, 23174 km2, 3236 km2 (14%) was covered by the transects. The mean density in the area was 0.101 ringed seals km-2, with substantial regional and local variation. Highest densities were found in the compact drift ice area. The estimated total population of ringed seals on the ice was 2093 in the Bothnian Bay proper and 248 in the North Quark. The 95% confidence limits of the estimates are ±24%.  相似文献

Marine mammals are at risk for infection by fecal-associated zoonotic pathogens when they swim and feed in polluted nearshore marine waters. Because of their tendency to consume 25-30% of their body weight per day in coastal filter-feeding invertebrates, southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis) can act as sentinels of marine ecosystem health in California. Feces from domestic and wildlife species were tested to determine prevalence, potential virulence, and diversity of selected opportunistic enteric bacterial pathogens in the Monterey Bay region. We hypothesized that if sea otters are sentinels of coastal health, and fecal pollution flows from land to sea, then sea otters and terrestrial animals might share the same enteric bacterial species and strains. Twenty-eight percent of fecal samples tested during 2007-2010 were positive for one or more potential pathogens. Campylobacter spp. were isolated most frequently, with an overall prevalence of 11%, followed by Vibrio cholerae (9%), Salmonella spp. (6%), V. parahaemolyticus (5%), and V. alginolyticus (3%). Sea otters were found positive for all target bacteria, exhibiting similar prevalences for Campylobacter and Salmonella spp. but greater prevalences for Vibrio spp. when compared to terrestrial animals. Fifteen Salmonella serotypes were detected, 11 of which were isolated from opossums. This is the first report of sea otter infection by S. enterica Heidelberg, a serotype also associated with human clinical disease. Similar strains of S. enterica Typhimurium were identified in otters, opossums, and gulls, suggesting the possibility of land-sea transfer of enteric bacterial pathogens from terrestrial sources to sea otters.  相似文献

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) occur frequently in the South China Sea (SCS), causing enormous economic losses in aquaculture. We analyzed historical HAB records during the period from 1980 to 2003 in SCS. We found that HABs-affected areas have expanded and the frequency of HABs varied during this period. The seasonal and annual variations, as well as causative algal species of HABs are different among the four regions. Areas with frequent HABs include the Pearl River Estuary (China), the Manila Bay (the Philippines), the Masinloc Bay (the Philippines), and the western coast of Sabah (Malaysia). HABs occurred frequently during March–May in the northern region of SCS, May–July in the eastern region, July in the western region, and year-round in the southern region. Among the species that cause HABs, Noctiluca scintillans dominated in the northern region, and Pyrodinium bahamense in the southern and eastern regions. Causative species also varied in different years for the entire SCS. Both P. bahamense and N. scintillans were the dominant species during 1980–2003. Some species not previously recorded formed blooms during 1991–2003, including Phaeocystis globosa, Scrippsiella trochoidea, Heterosigma akashiwo, and Mesodinium rubrum. Variations in HABs are related to various regional conditions, such as a reversed monsoon wind in the entire SCS, river discharges in the northern area, upwelling in Vietnam coastal waters during southwest winds and near Malaysia coastal waters during northeast winds, and eutrophication from coastal aquaculture in the Pearl River estuary, Manila Bay, and Masinloc Bay.
