Functional response is basic to any investigation of predator–prey relationships. In this study, the functional response of female Scymnus syriacus Marseul (Col.: Coccinellidae) to different densities (10, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100) of third instar nymphs of Aphis gossypii Glover as prey was studied in an open patch experiment in a growth chamber (25 °C, 65 ± 5% RH and a photoperiod of 16L:8D h ). Using logistic regression, a type II functional response for female Scymnus syriacus was determined. The searching efficiency (a') and handling time (Th) of the female predator using non linear least-square regression were estimated as 0.0769 ± 0.0136 h? 1 and 0.3103 ± 0.0438 h., respectively. Mean times required for the female predator to settle in a patch were 10.20 ± 4.28, 6.58 ± 2.58, 12.58 ± 4.50, 4.53 ± 1.48, 5.14 ± 2.59, 3.87 ± 3.52 min at different prey densities, respectively. Maximum theoretical predation rate (T/Th) estimated by Rogers' model for the female predator was 77.34. The proportion of female predators remaining in open patches at the end of the experiment was dependent on prey density (R2 = 0.876). The type of functional response obtained here agrees with studies on this predator in closed patches.  相似文献

To understand the effect of the probability of a predator catching prey, Pcatch, on the stability of the predator–prey system, a spatially explicit lattice model consisting of predators, prey, and grass was constructed. The predators and prey randomly move on the lattice space, and the grass grows according to its growth probability. When a predator encounters prey, the predator eats the prey in accordance with the probability Pcatch. When a prey encounters grass, the prey eats the grass. The predator and prey give birth to offspring according to a birth probability after eating prey or grass, respectively. When a predator or prey is initially introduced or newly born, its health state is set at a high given value. This health state decreases by one with every time step. When the state of an animal decreases to less than zero, the individual dies and is removed from the system. Population densities for predator and prey fluctuated significantly according to Pcatch. System stability was characterized by the standard deviation ? of the fluctuation. The simulation results showed that ? for predators increased with an increase of Pcatch; ? for prey reached a maximum at Pcatch = 0.4; and ? for grass fluctuated little regardless of Pcatch. These results were due to the tradeoff between Pcatch and the predator–prey encounter rate, which represents the degree of interaction between predator and prey and the average population density, respectively.  相似文献

Isolations from oak symptomatic of Acute Oak Decline, alder and walnut log tissue, and buprestid beetles in 2009–2012 yielded 32 Gram-negative bacterial strains showing highest gyrB sequence similarity to Rahnella aquatilis and Ewingella americana. Multilocus sequence analysis (using partial gyrB, rpoB, infB and atpD gene sequences) delineated the strains into six MLSA groups. Two MLSA groups contained reference strains of Rahnella genomospecies 2 and 3, three groups clustered within the Rahnella clade with no known type or reference strains and the last group contained the type strain of E. americana. DNA–DNA relatedness assays using both the microplate and fluorometric methods, confirmed that each of the five Rahnella MLSA groups formed separate taxa. Rahnella genomospecies 2 and 3 were previously not formally described due to a lack of distinguishing phenotypic characteristics. In the present study, all five Rahnella MLSA groups were phenotypically differentiated from each other and from R. aquatilis. Therefore we propose to classify the strains from symptomatic oak, alder and walnut and buprestid beetles as: Rahnella victoriana sp. nov. (type strain FRB 225T = LMG 27717T = DSM 27397T), Rahnella variigena sp. nov. (previously Rahnella genomosp. 2, type strain CIP 105588T = LMG 27711T), Rahnella inusitata sp. nov. (previously Rahnella genomosp. 3, type strain DSM 30078T = LMG 2640T), Rahnella bruchi sp. nov. (type strain FRB 226T = LMG 27718T = DSM 27398T) and Rahnella woolbedingensis sp. nov. Breathing exercises (BE), incentive spirometry and positioning are considered treatment modalities to achieve lung re-expansion. This study evaluated the influence of incentive spirometry and forward leaning on inspired tidal volumes (VT) and electromyographic activity of inspiratory muscles during BE. Four modalities of exercises were investigated: deep breathing, spirometry using both flow and volume-oriented devices, and volume-oriented spirometry after modified verbal instruction. Twelve healthy subjects aged 22.7 ± 2.1 years were studied. Surface electromyography activity of diaphragm, external intercostals, sternocleidomastoid and scalenes was recorded. Comparisons among the three types of exercises, without considering spirometry after modified instruction, showed that electromyographic activity and VT were lower during volume-oriented spirometry (p = 0.000, p = 0.054, respectively). Forward leaning resulted in a lower VT when compared to upright sitting (p = 0.000), but electromyographic activity was not different (p = 0.606). Inspired VT and electromyographic activity were higher during volume-oriented spirometry performed after modified instruction when compared with the flow-oriented device (p = 0.027, p = 0.052, respectively). In conclusion BE using volume-oriented spirometry before modified instruction resulted in a lower work of breathing as a result of a lower VT and was not a consequence of the device type used. Forward leaning might not be assumed by healthy subjects during situations of augmented respiratory demand.  相似文献

This paper describes field and laboratory time-lapse video analyses of the behavioral responses of the groups: Arachnida: Acari, Araneae, and Opiliones; Myriapoda: Chilopoda; Hymenoptera: Formicidae; Crustacea: Isopoda; and Coleoptera: Staphylinidae to live eggs of the brown blowfly, Calliphora stygia F. (Diptera: Calliphoridae), used as factitious prey in two contrasting agricultural field margins and in the laboratory. Field video results showed that predation by mites was greatest in tree-lined boundaries while centipede numbers and activity were greater in post-and-wire boundaries. All except Staphylinidae showed clear diurnal patterns of activity and egg predation rate over the 12 h recording period. Based on the number of eggs removed, number of eggs examined, predator numbers, and predator activity, three indices were formulated that allowed predator groups to be ranked according to their effectiveness as predators. Commensal interactions between the mites and harvestmen, mediated via mite-pierced eggs, were suggested from field data and confirmed in the laboratory. Phalangium opilio preferred to feed on both manually and mite-pierced compared with untreated eggs, but showed a stronger preference for manually pierced ones than mite-pierced, consuming six times as many over the same period. This is the first demonstration of a commensal interaction between two agroecosystem predators. If commensalism is common in agroecosystems it could increase the effectiveness of biological control. It may also need to be incorporated within theoretical models and may complicate the extrapolation of laboratory-based feeding studies to field situations.  相似文献

A taxonomic study of 24 Gram-stain-negative rod-shaped bacteria originating from the Antarctic environment is described. Phylogenetic analysis using 16S rRNA gene sequencing differentiated isolated strains into two groups belonging to the genus Flavobacterium. Group I (n = 20) was closest to Flavobacterium aquidurense WB 1.1-56T (98.3% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) while group II (n = 4) showed Flavobacterium hydatis DSM 2063T as its nearest neighbour (98.5–98.9% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). Despite high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, these two groups represented two distinct novel species as shown by phenotypic traits and low genomic relatedness assessed by rep-PCR fingerprinting, DNA-DNA hybridization and whole-genome sequencing. Common to representative strains of both groups were the presence of major menaquinone MK-6 and sym-homospermidine as the major polyamine. Common major fatty acids were C15:0 iso, C15:1 iso G, C15:0 iso 3-OH, C17:0 iso 3OH and Summed Feature 3 (C16:1 ω7c/C16:1 ω6c). Strain CCM 8828T (group I) contained phosphatidylethanolamine, three unidentified lipids lacking a functional group, three unidentified aminolipids and single unidentified glycolipid in the polar lipid profile. Strain CCM 8825T (group II) contained phosphatidylethanolamine, eight unidentified lipids lacking a functional group, three unidentified aminolipids and two unidentified glycolipids in the polar lipid profile. These characteristics corresponded to characteristics of the genus Flavobacterium. The obtained results showed that the analysed strains represent novel species of the genus Flavobacterium, for which the names Flavobacterium circumlabens sp. nov. (type strain CCM 8828T = P5626T = LMG 30617T) and Flavobacterium cupreum sp. nov. (type strain CCM 8825T = P2683T = LMG 30614T) are proposed.  相似文献

Acute toxicity tests were carried out to determine the effect of three larvicides, spinosad, pirimiphos methyl, and chlorpyrifos, on Culex quinquefasciatus Say, Anopheles gambiae s.s. Giles (Diptera: Culicidae), and guppies, Poecilia reticulata Peters (Pisces: Poeciliidae). Thereafter, larvae of Cx. quinquefasciatus were introduced to P. reticulata in containers of different volumes with low concentrations of each larvicide at established predator to prey densities of 1–35; 5–70 and 10–350 (fish to larvae) respectively. The experiment was replicated six times, and the larval consumption was counted after 24 h. Spinosad and pirimiphos methyl were significantly toxic to Cx. quinquefasciatus, the less susceptible mosquito species. Guppy consumption of Culex larvae was highest at a predator to prey density 5–70. Feeding activity of guppies increased in the spinosad treatment at 49 μg L−1 compared to control and the synthetic larvicides. The synthetic larvicides generally reduced consumption of larvae except for the lowest concentration of pirimiphos methyl which increased it at the highest predator to prey density in a 3 L container. The highest percentage of Culex larvae was consumed by fish in the presence of spinosad at 49 μg L−1 and a predator to prey density of 5–70 in 0.5 L plastic containers. Thus, predator to prey density, container size, type and concentration of larvicide are all important factors to be considered in integrated management of mosquito larvae.  相似文献

PurposeTo find the optimum parameter of a new beam control function installed in a synchrotron-based proton therapy system.MethodsA function enabling multiple gated irradiation in the flat top phase has been installed in a real-time-image gated proton beam therapy (RGPT) system. This function is realized by a waiting timer that monitors the elapsed time from the last gate-off signal in the flat top phase. The gated irradiation efficiency depends on the timer value, Tw. To find the optimum Tw value, gated irradiation efficiency was evaluated for each configurable Tw value. 271 gate signal data sets from 58 patients were used for the simulation.ResultsThe highest mean efficiency 0.52 was obtained in TW = 0.2 s. The irradiation efficiency was approximately 21% higher than at TW = 0 s, which corresponds to ordinary synchrotron operation. The irradiation efficiency was improved in 154 (57%) of the 271 cases. The irradiation efficiency was reduced in 117 cases because the TW value was insufficient or the function introduced an unutilized wait time for the next gate-on signal in the flat top phase. In the actual treatment of a patient with a hepatic tumor at Tw = 0.2 s, 4.48 GyE irradiation was completed within 250 s. In contrast, the treatment time of ordinary synchrotron operation was estimated to be 420 s.ConclusionsThe results suggest that the multiple gated-irradiation function has potential to improve the gated irradiation efficiency and to reduce the treatment time.  相似文献

Two new Vibrio species, Vibrio aestivus and Vibrio quintilis, are described after a polyphasic characterization of strains M22T, M61 and M62T, isolated from seawater collected off a beach on the East coast of Spain (Valencia). All three strains are Gram negative, mesophilic, slightly halophilic, fermentative rods. V. aestivus (M22T = CECT 7558T = CAIM 1861T = KCTC 23860T and M61 = CECT 7559 = CAIM 1862 = KCTC 23861) is oxidase positive, reduces nitrates to nitrites, is negative for Voges Proskauer, arginine dihydrolase and indole and non hydrolytic on most substrates tested. The 16S rRNA gene sequences of M22T and M61 are most similar to Vibrio marisflavi (97.1–97.2%) but phylogenetic analysis using NJ, MP and ML methods display Vibrio stylophorae (96.2% similarity) as sibling species. The three species form a deep clade in the genus Vibrio. Average Nucleotide Identity (ANI) values, determined as a measure of overall genomic resemblance, confirmed that strains M22T and M61 are members of the same species, different to V. marisflavi CECT 7928T.V. quintilis (M62T = CECT 7734T = CAIM 1863T = KCTC 23833T) is aerogenic, arginine dihydrolase and Voges Proskauer positive, oxidase negative and unable to reduce nitrate, traits shared by most species in the Gazogenes clade. It is unpigmented and does not grow on TCBS Agar. 16S rRNA gene similarities to its nearest species, Vibrio aerogenes and Vibrio mangrovi, are 97.6% and 96.0% respectively. Strain M62T and V. aerogenes CECT 7868T display ANI values well below the 95% boundary for genomic species.  相似文献

The time course of alteration in neuromuscular function of the knee extensor muscles was characterized during a prolonged intermittent exercise. Maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) and surface EMG activity of both vastii were measured during brief interruptions before (T0), during (30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 min: T30, T60, T90, T120, T150, T180) and 30 min after (T+30) a 3 h tennis match in 12 trained players. M-wave and twitch contractile properties were analyzed following single stimuli. Short tetani at 20 Hz and 80 Hz were also applied to six subjects at T0 and T180. Significant reductions in MVC (P < 0.05; −9%) and electromyographic activity normalized to the M wave for both vastii (P < 0.01) occurred with fatigue at T180. No significant changes in M-wave duration and amplitude nor in twitch contractile properties were observed. The ratio between the torques evoked by 20 Hz and 80 Hz stimulation declined significantly (P < 0.001; −12%) after exercise. Central activation failure and alterations in excitation–contraction coupling are probable mechanisms contributing to the moderate impairment of the neuromuscular function during prolonged tennis playing.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of time left alone on dog behaviour and cardiac activity. Twelve privately owned dogs, with no history of separation related behaviour problems, were video-recorded on three different occasions when left alone in their home environment. The treatments lasted for 0.5 h (T0.5); 2 h (T2) and 4 h (T4). Video-recording started 10 min before the owner left the house and continued until 10 min after the owner returned, so that interactions between dog and owner as well as behaviour during separation could be studied. Data on heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) were collected within the same time period in each treatment. In addition to analysing behaviours separately, behaviours were also grouped together and defined as new variables; physically active, attentive behaviour, vocal, interaction initiated by owner and interaction initiated by dog. There were no differences in behaviour between treatments at equivalent time intervals until the owner returned, although a number of differences were observed at reunion with the owner. Dogs showed a higher frequency of physical activity (P < 0.05) and attentive behaviour (P < 0.01) in T2 (0.37 ± 0.07; 0.52 ± 0.08, mean frequency of occurrence/15 s ± SE) and T4 (0.48 ± 0.08; 0.48 ± 0.07) compared to T0.5 (0.20 ± 0.07; 0.21 ± 0.05). They also showed more tail wagging (P < 0.01) and interacted more with their owners (P < 0.01) in T2 (0.27 ± 0.08; 0.47 ± 0.09) and T4 (0.26 ± 0.04; 0.42 ± 0.09) compared to T0.5 (0.09 ± 0.04; 0.14 ± 0.03). After a longer time of separation, the dogs also showed higher frequencies of lip licking (P < 0.05) and body shaking (P < 0.05) at the owner's return (T0.5 = 0.09 ± 0.05; T2 = 0.24 ± 0.08; T4 = 0.27 ± 0.06 and T0.5 = 0.03 ± 0.01; T2 = 0.08 ± 0.03; T4 = 0.07 ± 0.01, respectively). There was a tendency for higher HR (P < 0.1) during the first and second minute after reunion in T2 (127.6 ± 1.25, mean bpm ± SE; 111.3 ± 1.24) compared to T0.5 (106.2 ± 1.06; 87.5 ± 1.02). According to the results of this study, the effect of time left alone was shown by a more intense greeting behaviour by the dog towards their owner as well as by a higher frequency of physical activity and attentive behaviour when the owner returned, already after 2 h of separation. Although this study cannot distinguish between whether dogs were aware of the length of time they were alone (but did not signal it) or whether they were unaware until reminded of it by the return of their owner, it does confirm that dogs are affected by the duration of time at home alone.  相似文献

We examined the effects of variation in swimming speed, or ‘ram speed’, on the feeding kinematics of juvenile Indo-Pacific tarpon, Megalops cyprinoides. Tarpon were filmed feeding on non-elusive prey at 500 images s?1. Prey items were offered at one end of the filming tank, the opposite end where tarpon grouped, to encourage them to use a ram strategy to capture their prey. We describe tarpon as ram-suction feeders. Ram speed varied among strikes from 0.19 to 1.38 m/s and each individual produced speeds that spanned at least 0.9 m/s across trials. Although suction distances were much less variable, prey movement towards the predator was present in all feeding trials. There was a strong positive relationship between initial predator – prey distance and ram speed (r2=0.72, P<0.001). When tarpon initiated their strike from further away, they achieved higher ram speeds, but also took longer to capture their prey. All other timing variables were unaffected by ram speed whereas at higher ram speeds tarpon exhibited greater expansion of the mouth and buccal cavity. Greater buccal expansion accomplished in the same period of time implies that both the total volume of water captured and the water flow rate entering the mouth was greater in strikes at higher ram speeds. Our results demonstrate how feeding kinematics may vary as a function of ram speed, and how fish predators that lack jaw protrusion and have a large gape capacity can maximize their feeding success by altering their swimming speed.  相似文献

The photoreaction and adsorption properties on surfaces, thermal decomposition, chemical transformation, and other properties of the formamide molecule are widely used to understand the origins of the formation of biological molecules (nucleosides, amino acids, DNA, monolayers, etc.) needed for life. The titanium oxide (TiO2) surface can act both as a template on which the accumulation of adsorbed molecules like formamide occurs through the concentration effect, and as a catalytic material that lowers the activation energy needed for the formation of intermediate products. In this paper, a formamide–water solution interacting with TiO2 (anatase) surface is simulated using the molecular dynamics method. The structural, diffusion and density properties of formamide–water mixture on TiO2 are established for a wide temperature range from T = 250 K up to T = 400 K.  相似文献

Development, oviposition, and survival of a commercially available predatory mite, Amblyseius swirskii (Athias-Henriot), were investigated to determine the life history parameters when they consumed a diet of cattail (Typha latifolia L.) pollen or tomato russet mites (Aculops lycopersici [Massee]) at 25 ± 0.5 °C and 70 ± 10% RH. Both diets were favorable for development, oviposition, and survival of A. swirskii. Amblyseius swirskii reared on mite prey showed improved performance as compared to pollen. Females laid a total of 26.8 and 38.1 eggs on the pollen and mite diets, respectively. The mortality of female A. swirskii was very low during the first 20 days on both diets, and the cumulative Weibull models that were used to describe age-specific survival and fecundity of female showed a good fit to the data. The net reproductive rate (R0), intrinsic rate of increase (rm), and finite rate of increase (λ) of A. swirskii were higher on russet mites than when fed on the pollen diet due to their shorter immature development period and higher oviposition rate. The intrinsic rate of increase (rm) of the predatory mite was 0.185 and 0.201 on the pollen and mite diet, respectively. The mean generation time (T) and the population doubling time (Dt) were not significantly different for A. swirskii on the two diets. Our results provide life history information for a commercially available A. swirskii using two favorable diets and can be used to compare population growth under other diet sources.  相似文献

Performances of various bioreactors under different operating conditions were evaluated with respect to hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) reduction and COD removal. Continuous reactor studies were carried out with (i) aerobic suspended growth system, (ii) aerobic attached growth system, and (iii) anoxic attached growth system, using both synthetic and actual industrial wastewater. Arthrobacter rhombi-RE (MTCC7048), a Cr(VI) reducing strain enriched and isolated from chromium contaminated soil, was used in all the bioreactors for Cr(VI) biotransformation and COD removal. Aerobic and anoxic batch experiments were conducted to evaluate the bio-kinetic parameters. The bio-kinetic parameters for aerobic system were: μmax = 2.34/d, Ks = 190 mg/L (as COD), Ki = 3.8 mg/L of Cr(VI), and YT = 0.377. These parameters for anoxic conditions were: μmax = 0.57/d, Ks = 710 mg/L (as COD), Ki = 8.77 mg/L of Cr(VI), and YT = 0.13. Aerobic attached growth system, operated at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 24 h and an organic loading rate (OLR) of 3 kg/m3/d, performed better than aerobic suspended and the anoxic attached growth systems operated under identical conditions, while treating synthetic wastewater as well as industrial effluent.  相似文献

Three strains of rhizobia isolated from effective root nodules of pea (Pisum sativum L.) collected from the Indian trans-Himalayas were characterized using 16S rRNA, atpD and recA genes. Phylogeny of the 16S rRNA genes revealed that the newly isolated strains were members of the genus Rhizobium with ≥99.9% sequence similarity to the members within the “Rhizobium leguminosarum” group. Phylogenetic analyses based on the concatenated sequences of atpD and recA gene, and 92 core genes extracted from the genome sequences indicated that strains JKLM 12A2T and JKLM 13E are grouped as a separate clade closely related to R. laguerreae FB206T. In contrast, the strain JKLM 19E was placed with “R. hidalgonense” FH14T. Whole-genome average nucleotide identity (ANI) values were 97.6% within strains JKLM 12A2T and JKLM 13E, and less than 94% with closely related species. The digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values were 81.45 within the two strains and less than 54.8% to closely related species. The major cellular fatty acids were C18:1w7c in summed feature 8, C14:0 3OH/C16:1 iso I in summed feature 2, and C18:0. The DNA G + C content of JKLM 12A2T and JKLM 13E was 60.8 mol%. The data on genomic, chemotaxonomic, and phenotypic characteristics indicates that the strains JKLM 12A2T and JKLM 13E represent a novel species, Rhizobium indicum sp. nov. The type strain is JKLM 12A2T (= MCC 3961T = KACC 21380T = JCM 33658T). However, the strain JKLM 19E represents a member of “R. hidalgonense” and the symbiovar viciae.  相似文献

LETEG is a method developed and used for the separation and purification of proteins employing a single-step ligand (aptamers) evolution in which aptamers are eluted with an increasing temperature gradient. Using recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) as the test purification target, and after avoiding cross reactions of aptamers with Bacillus subtilis extracellular proteins by negative SELEX, the effects of time and pH on aptamer binding to rhGH were investigated. The highest binding efficiency of aptamers on rhGH-immobilized microparticles was obtained at pH 7.0. The aptamers that interacted with rhGH were eluted by a multi-stage step-up temperature gradient in ΔT = 10 °C increments within the range T = 55–95 °C; and the strongest affinity binding was disrupted at T = 85 °C where CApt = 0.16 μM was eluted. The equilibrium binding data obtained was described by a Langmuir-type isotherm; where the affinity constant was KD = 218 nM rhGH. RhGH was separated from the fermentation broth with 99.8% purity, indicating that the method developed is properly applicable even for an anionic protein.  相似文献

Microbiota analysis of blown pack spoiled salami revealed five distinguishable Lactobacillus isolates we could not assign to a known species. Two of the isolates (TMW 1.2172T and TMW 1.1920) are rod-shaped, whilst three isolates (TMW 1.2098T, TMW 1.2118 and TMW 1.2188) appear coccus shaped or as short rods. All isolates are Gram-stain positive, facultative anaerobic, catalase and oxidase negative, non-motile and non-sporulating. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA, dnaK, pheS and rpoA gene sequences revealed two distinct lineages within the genus Lactobacillus (L.). The isolates are members of the Lactobacillus alimentarius group with Lactobacillus ginsenosidimutans DSM 24154T (99.4% 16S similarity), Lactobacillus versmoldensis DSM 14857T (97.9%) and Lactobacillus furfuricola DSM 27174T (97.7%) as phylogenetic closest related species and L. alimentarius DSM 20249T (97.7%) and Lactobacillus paralimentarius DSM 13961T (97.5%) as closest relatives, respectively. Average Nucleotide Identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between the isolates and their close related type strains are lower than 80% and 25%, respectively. For both designated type strains, the peptidoglycan type is A4α l-Lys-d-Asp and the major fatty acids are C16:0, C18:1ω9c and summed feature 7. Based on phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic analysis we demonstrated that the investigated isolates belong to two novel Lactobacillus species for which we propose the names Lactobacillus salsicarnum with the type strain TMW 1.2098T = DSM 109451T = LMG 31401T and Lactobacillus halodurans with the type strain TMW 1.2172T = DSM 109452T = LMG 31402T.  相似文献

Urban wetlands typically have few plant species. In wetlands designed to improve water quality, nutrient-rich water and highly variable water levels often favor aggressive, flood-tolerant plants, such as Typha × glauca (hybrid cattail). At Des Plaines River Wetlands Demonstration Site (Lake Co., IL), we assessed T. × glauca dominance and plant community composition under varying hydroperiods in a complex of eight constructed wetlands. Plots flooded for more than 5 weeks during the growing season tended to be dominated by T. × glauca, while plots flooded fewer days did not. Plots with high cover of T. × glauca had low species richness (negative correlation, R2 = 0.72, p < 0.001). However, overall species richness of the wetland complex was high (94 species), indicating that wetlands in urbanizing landscapes can support many plant species where T. × glauca is not dominant. T. × glauca-dominated areas resisted the establishment of a native plant community. Removing T. × glauca and introducing native species increased diversity initially, but did not prevent re-invasion. Although 12 of the 24 species we seeded became established in our cleared plots, T. × glauca rapidly re-invaded. In year 1, T. × glauca regained an average of 11 ramets m−2, and its density doubled in year 2. The likelihood of planted species surviving decreased as duration of inundation increased, and in both seeded and planted plots, graminoids had greater survivorship through year 2 than forbs across a range of water levels. Within 4 years, however, T. × glauca was the most common plant, present in 92% of the cleared plots. Simply removing T. × glauca and adding propagules to an urban wetland is not sufficient to increase diversity.  相似文献

Large ungulate population monitoring is a crucial wildlife management tool as ungulates help in structuring and maintaining the large carnivore populations. Reliable data on population status of major ungulate prey species are still non-existent for most of the protected areas in the Indian part of the eastern Himalayan biodiversity hotspot. Twenty transects were monitored over a period of three years (2009–2011) totaling 600 km with an average length of 2 km. The estimated mean density of ungulates was 17.5 km−2 with overall density of 48.7 km−2. The wild pig Sus scrofa had the highest density (6.7 ± 1.2 km−2) among all the prey species followed by barking deer Muntiacus muntjak (3.9 ± 0.6 km−2), sambar Rusa unicolor (3.8 ± 0.5) and gaur Bos gaurus (3.5 ± 0.9 km−2). The estimated total ungulate biomass density was 2182.56 kg km−2. This prey biomass can support up to 7.2 tigers per 100 km−2. However, with two other sympatric carnivores sharing the same resources, the actual tiger numbers that can be supported will be lower. The estimated minor prey species was 31 km−2 significantly 30.6% crop damages were reported by wild pig (p = 0.01) and 35.4% was elephant (p = 0.004). This data on ungulate densities and biomass will be crucial for carnivore conservation in this understudied globally significant biodiversity hotspot.  相似文献
