The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of interelectrode distance (IED) over the estimated innervation zone (IZ) for the vastus lateralis muscle and normalization on the torque-related patterns of responses for electromyographic (EMG) amplitude and mean power frequency (MPF) during concentric isokinetic, eccentric isokinetic, and isometric muscle actions of the leg extensors. Eight men performed submaximal to maximal concentric isokinetic, eccentric isokinetic, and isometric muscle actions of the dominant leg extensors. Surface EMG signals were recorded simultaneously with two bipolar electrode arrangements in single differential configuration (20 and 40 mm IEDs) placed over the estimated IZ for the vastus lateralis muscle and a third electrode arrangement in single differential configuration (20 mm IED) placed distal to the estimated IZ. The results indicated that there were only a few (six of 90 statistical comparisons) significant (p < 0.05) mean differences among the three electrode arrangements for absolute EMG amplitude. There were no mean differences among the three electrode arrangements for absolute or normalized EMG MPF values or normalized EMG amplitude for the three types of muscle actions. Thus, it may be possible to reduce the potential influence of the IZ on amplitude and spectral parameters of the EMG signal through normalization.  相似文献

IntroductionPhysiological tremor, as a whole, can be influenced by changes in muscle activity. However, the origin of low-frequency physiological tremor oscillations has yet to be conclusively determined. It is possible that by experimentally manipulating muscular activity, a better determination of the origin of those low-frequency oscillations can be achieved. It was demonstrated that changes in joint angle modify characteristics of muscular activity. As such, we hypothesize that changes in wrist-joint angle will alter the characteristics of low-frequency physiological tremor oscillations.ObjectiveAssess the influence of changes in joint angle of the wrist on characteristics of physiological finger tremor.MethodsPhysiological finger tremor was recorded (n = 25) using a laser displacement system while the arm and hand were supported. The relative angle between the dorsum of the hand and the forearm was altered between conditions (135°, 180°, 225° and 270°), while the hand and the finger remained parallel to the ground. EMG of the extensors and flexors were also recorded.ResultsTremor amplitude was significantly altered by changes in wrist-joint angle. This was especially the case for lower frequency oscillations. In addition, electromyography properties of forearm muscles were also significantly modified by changes in wrist-joint angles.ConclusionsThis study demonstrates that changes in wrist-joint angle modify the characteristics of physiological finger tremor. This should be taken into account when interpreting tremor data as well as when developing tools to minimize tremor.  相似文献

Physiological tremor is an inherent feature of the motor system that is influenced by intrinsic (neuromuscular) and/or extrinsic (task) factors. Given that tremor must be accounted for during the performance of many fine motor skills; there is a requirement to clarify how different factors interact to influence tremor. This study was designed to assess the impact localized fatigue of a single arm and stance position had on bilateral physiological tremor and forearm muscle activity. Results demonstrated that unilateral fatigue produced bilateral increases in tremor and wrist extensor activity. For example, fatigue resulted in increases in extensor activity across both exercised (increased 8–10% MVC) and the non-exercised arm (increased 3–7% MVC). The impact of fatigue was not restricted to changes in tremor/EMG amplitude, with altered hand–finger coupling observed within both arms. Within the exercised arm, cross-correlation values decreased (pre-exercise r = 0.62–0.64; post-exercise r = 0.37–0.43) while coupling increased within the non-exercised arm (pre-exercise r = 0.51–0.55; post-exercise r = 0.62–0.67). While standing posture alone had no significant impact on tremor/EMG dynamics, the tremor and muscle increases seen with fatigue were more pronounced when standing. Together these results demonstrate that the combination of postural and fatigue factors can influence both tremor/EMG outputs and the underlying coordinative coupling dynamics.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to examine if surface EMG signals can be detected from the quadriceps femoris muscle of severely obese patients and to investigate if differences exist in quadriceps force and myoelectric manifestations of fatigue between obese patients and lean controls.Fourteen severely obese patients (body mass index, BMI, mean ± SD: 44.9 ± 6.3 kg/m2) and fourteen healthy controls (BMI: 23.7 ± 2.5 kg/m2) were studied. The vastus medialis and lateralis of the dominant thigh were concurrently investigated during voluntary isometric contractions (10-s long at submaximal and maximal intensities and intermittent submaximal contractions until exhaustion) and sustained (120-s long) electrically elicited contractions. We found that the detection of surface EMG signals from the quadriceps is feasible also in severely obese subjects presenting increased thickness of the subcutaneous fat tissue. In addition, we confirmed and extended previous findings showing that the volume conductor properties determine the amplitude and spectral features of the detected surface EMG signals: the lower the subcutaneous tissue thickness, the higher the amplitude and mean frequency estimates. Further, we found no differences in the mechanical and myoelectric manifestations of fatigue during intermittent voluntary and sustained electrically elicited contractions between obese patients and lean controls.  相似文献

This study attempted to estimate TMJ loading during incisal loading using a custom load-cell device and surface electromyographic (sEMG) recordings of the main jaw closers to assess the outcome correlation. Study participants were 23 healthy volunteers. The incisal loads having submaximal and mean intensity were recorded using a calibrated electronic load cell; simultaneously, surface electromyography (sEMG) of the right and left masseter and temporalis muscles was recorded. Readings of the resting, clenching in maximal and submaximal intercuspal positions and mean (50%) incisal loads were recorded. Clenching sEMG activity was used as a reference for normalization. The mean (SD) submaximal incisal load recorded was 498 (305.78) N, and the mean at 50% of the submaximal load was 268.93 (147.37) N. Mean (SD) sEMG activity during submaximal clenching was 141.23 (87.76) μV, with no significant differences between the four muscles. During submaximal voluntary incisal loading, the normalized mean sEMG activity was 49.99 (34.54) µV %, and 27.17(15.29) µV % during mean (50%) effort. The incisal load was generated mainly by the masseter muscles, as these showed a positive correlation during mean but not during submaximal effort. In the edge-to-edge jaw position, the mean incisal load effort seems to be physiological, but excessive TMJ loads can be expected from chronic or excessive incisal loading. In conclusion, incisal loads require the activity of the masseter muscles, which show a positive correlation between sEMG activity and effective incisal loads during mean, but not during submaximal, effort, and the masseter muscles are dominant over the temporalis muscles during submaximal incisal biting.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to use a wavelet-based signal processing technique to examine the influence of electrode placement over the innervation zone (IZ) on the shape of the electromyographic (EMG) frequency spectrum. Ten healthy males (mean ± SD age = 23.6 ± 3.0 years) performed isometric muscle actions of the dominant leg extensors at 10%, 40%, 70%, and 100% of the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). Surface EMG signals were detected simultaneously from the vastus lateralis with two bipolar electrode arrangements. One of the electrode arrangements had its center point located directly over the IZ, while the other arrangement had its center point distal to the IZ (i.e., 20 mm away). All EMG signals were processed with a wavelet-based procedure. The results showed that for all isometric torque levels, the EMG signals from the distal electrode arrangement demonstrated greater total intensity values than those for the IZ arrangement for frequencies ranging from approximately 2 to 110 Hz. There were no consistent differences, however, between the IZ and distal electrode arrangements for total EMG intensity values above 110 Hz. Thus, these findings indicated that electrode placement over the IZ affected primarily the low-, rather than the high-frequency portion of the EMG frequency spectrum.  相似文献

In a thorough study, the multitaper (MTM) and the extended continuous wavelet-transform (CWT) coherence-analysis methods were compared in terms of there application in determining the dynamics from the electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyogram (EMG) signals of patients with Parkinsonian tremor. The main aim of the study in a biological point of view is to analyze whether the basic tremor frequency and its “first harmonic” frequency of Parkinsonian tremor are really harmonically related or are in fact distinct processes. The extension of the CWT is achieved by using a Morlet wavelet as the analysis window with an adjustable relative bandwidth which gives the flexibility in setting a desired frequency resolution. In order to obtain a perspective view of the two methods, they were applied to two different model signals to determine their actual threshold in detecting short-lived changes in the analysis of non-stationary signals and to determine their noise thresholds by adding external noise to the signals to test the reduction in coherence to be not merely due to the random fluctuations in stochastic signals. Beyond applying an autoregressive 2nd-order and a coupled van der Pol model system, however, also true EEG and EMG data from five Parkinson patients were used. The results were compared in terms of the time and frequency resolutions of these two methods, and it was determined that the multitaper method was able to detect reduction in power and coherence as short as 1 s. The extended CWT analysis only revealed gaps that were longer than 3 s.The time gaps in the coherence indicate the loss of connection between the cortex and muscle during the respective time intervals. This more accurate analysis of the MTM was also seen in the dynamical EEG–EMG coherence at the tremor frequency and its “first harmonic” of Parkinsonian patients. In terms of our “biological” aim, this shows distinct prevalence of the corticomuscular coupling at those frequencies over time. Applying this method to biological data reveals important aspects about their dynamics, e.g., the distinct dynamics between basic frequency and “first harmonic” frequency over time in Parkinsonian tremor.  相似文献

In this study, the effects of mental fatigue on mechanically induced tremor at both a low (3–6 Hz) and high (8–12 Hz) frequency were investigated. The two distinct tremor frequencies were evoked using two springs of different stiffness, during 20 s sustained contractions of the knee extensor muscles at 30% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) before and after 100 min of a mental fatigue task, in 12 healthy (29 ± 3.7 years) participants. Mental fatigue resulted in a 6.9% decrease in MVC and in a 9.4% decrease in the amplitude of the agonist muscle EMG during sustained 30% MVC contractions in the induced high frequency only. Following the mental fatigue task, the coefficient of variation and standard deviation of the force signal decreased at 8–12 Hz induced tremor by 31.7% and 35.2% respectively, but not at 3–6 Hz induced tremor. Similarly, the maximum value and area underneath the peak in the power spectrum of the force signal decreased by 55.5% and 53.1% respectively in the 8–12 Hz range only. In conclusion, mental fatigue decreased mechanically induced 8–12 Hz tremor and had no effect on induced 3–6 Hz tremor. We suggest that the reduction could be attributed to the decreased activation of the agonist muscles.  相似文献

The value of electromyography (EMG) is sensitive to many physiological and non-physiological factors. The purpose of the present study was to determine if the torque–velocity test (T–V) can be used to normalize EMG signals into a framework of biological significance. Peak EMG amplitude of gluteus maximus (GMAX), vastus lateralis (VL), rectus femoris (RF), biceps femoris long head (BF), gastrocnemius medialis (GAS) and soleus (SOL) was calculated for nine subjects during isometric maximal voluntary contractions (IMVC) and torque–velocity bicycling tests (T–V). Then, the reference EMG signals obtained from IMVC and T–V bicycling tests were used to normalize the amplitude of the EMG signals collected for 15 different submaximal pedaling conditions. The results of this study showed that the repeatability of the measurements between IMVC (from 10% to 23%) and T–V (from 8% to 20%) was comparable. The amplitude of the peak EMG of VL was 99 ± 43% higher (p < 0.001) when measured during T–V. Moreover, the inter-individual variability of the EMG patterns calculated for submaximal cycling exercises differed significantly when using T–V bicycling normalization method (GMAX: 0.33 ± 0.16 vs. 1.09 ± 0.04, VL: 0.07 ± 0.02 vs. 0.64 ± 0.14, SOL: 0.07 ± 0.03 vs. 1.00 ± 0.07, RF: 1.21 ± 0.20 vs. 0.92 ± 0.13, BF: 1.47 ± 0.47 vs. 0.84 ± 0.11). It was concluded that T–V bicycling test offers the advantage to be less time and energy-consuming and to be as repeatable as IMVC tests to measure peak EMG amplitude. Furthermore, this normalization method avoids the impact of non-physiological factors on the amplitude of the EMG signals so that it allows quantifying better the activation level of lower limb muscles and the variability of the EMG patterns during submaximal bicycling exercises.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of summation of contraction on acceleration signals in human skeletal muscle. The torque parameters of dorsiflexion and acceleration signals in the tibialis anterior muscle were measured during evoked isometric contractions. In an examination of two-pulse trains with different inter-pulse intervals, the torque and accelerometer responses to inter-pulse intervals of 10–100 ms were recorded. In an investigation of the effects of different numbers of stimuli, the torque and accelerometer responses to 1–8 pulses with a constant inter-pulse interval of 10 ms were recorded. The present study found that there was a difference in acceleration amplitude between the single-pulse and two-pulse trains with an inter-pulse interval of 10 ms but not two-pulse trains with an inter-pulse interval of 20 ms or more. In the investigation of different numbers of stimuli, we found a similar MMG amplitude across 2–8 pulses. Moreover, we observed that the maximal time to the peak acceleration signal was ~27 ms. In a comparison of torque parameters with acceleration signals, the present study clearly shows that acceleration amplitude is poorly correlated to changes in force parameters when the inter-pulse interval or the number of stimuli are increased. These results suggest that the absence of associated changes in acceleration peak is due to the long interval for the subsequent pulses relative to the time at which acceleration peak is achieved (~27 ms). These findings will provide useful information concerning the method for assessing summation of contraction with an accelerometer.  相似文献

This study investigated neuromuscular fatigue following low-intensity resistance exercise with vascular restriction (VR) and without vascular restriction (control, CON). Fourteen males participated in two experimental trials (VR and CON) each separated by 48 h. Each participant performed two isometric maximum voluntary contractions (MVCs) before and after five sets of 20 dynamic constant external resistance leg extension exercises (DCER-EX) at 20% of one-repetition maximum (1-RM). The participants were asked to lift (1.5 s) and lower (1.5 s) the load at a constant velocity. Surface electromyography (EMG) was recorded from the vastus lateralis during MVC and DCER-EX. Twitch interpolation was used to assess the percent of maximal voluntary activation (%VA) during the MVC. During performing five sets of 20 DCER-EX, the increases (p < 0.05) in EMG amplitude and decreases (p < 0.05) in EMG mean power frequency were similar for both VR and CON. However, there were significant differences between VR and CON for MVC force, %VA, and potentiated twitch force and significant interactions for EMG amplitude. VR decreased MVC force, %VA, potentiated twitch force, and EMG amplitude more than CON. Our findings suggest that the VR-induced fatigue may have been due to a combination of peripheral (decreases in potentiated twitch) and central (decreases in %VA and EMG amplitude) fatigue.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to examine the patterns of responses for torque, electromyographic (EMG) amplitude, EMG mean power frequency (MPF), mechanomyographic (MMG) amplitude, and MMG MPF across 30 repeated maximal isometric (ISO) and concentric (CON) muscle actions of the leg extensors. Twelve female subjects (21.1 ± 1.4 yrs; 63.3 ± 7.4 kg) performed ISO and CON fatigue protocols with EMG and MMG signals recorded from the vastus lateralis. The relationships for torque, EMG amplitude, EMG MPF, MMG amplitude, and MMG MPF versus repetition number were examined using polynomial regression. The results indicated there were decreases (p < 0.05) across the ISO muscle actions for torque (r2 = 0.95), EMG amplitude (R2 = 0.44), EMG MPF (r2 = 0.62), and MMG MPF (r2 = 0.48), but no change in MMG amplitude (r2 = 0.07). In addition, there were decreases across the CON muscle actions for torque (R2 = 0.97), EMG amplitude (R2 = 0.46), EMG MPF (R2 = 0.86), MMG amplitude (R2 = 0.44), and MMG MPF (R2 = 0.80). Thus, the current findings suggested that the mechanisms of fatigue and motor control strategies used to modulate torque production were similar between maximal ISO and CON muscle actions.  相似文献

The study compared the distribution of electromyographic (EMG) signal amplitude in the upper trapezius muscle in 10 women with fibromyalgia and in 10 healthy women before and after experimentally-induced muscle pain. Surface EMG signals were recorded over the right upper trapezius muscle with a 10 × 5 grid of electrodes during 90° shoulder abduction sustained for 60 s. The control subjects repeated the abduction task following injections of isotonic and hypertonic (painful) saline into the upper trapezius muscle. The EMG amplitude was computed for each electrode pair and provided a topographical map of the distribution of muscle activity. The pain level rated by the patients at the beginning of the sustained contraction was 5.9 ± 1.5. The peak pain intensity for the control group following the injection of hypertonic saline was 6.0 ± 1.6. During the sustained contractions, the EMG amplitude increased relatively more in the cranial than caudal region of the upper trapezius muscle for the control subjects (shift in the distribution of EMG amplitude: 2.3 ± 1.3 mm; P < 0.01). The patient group showed lower average EMG amplitude than the controls during the contraction (P < 0.05) and did not show different changes in EMG amplitude between different regions of the upper trapezius. A similar behavior was observed for the control group following injection of hypertonic saline. The results indicate that muscle pain prevents the adaptation of upper trapezius activity during sustained contractions as observed in non-painful conditions, which may induce overuse of similar muscle compartments with fatigue.  相似文献

A wavelet-decomposition with soft-decision algorithm is used to estimate an approximate power-spectral density (PSD) of both accelerometer and surface EMG signals for the purpose of discrimination of Parkinson tremor from essential tremor. A soft-decision wavelet-based PSD estimation is used with 256 bands for a signal sampled at 800 Hz. The sum of the entropy of the PSD in band 6 (7.8125–9.375 Hz) and band 11 (15.625–17.1875 Hz) is used as a classification factor. The data has been recorded for diagnostic purposes in the Department of Neurology of the University of Kiel, Germany. Two sets of data are used. The training set, which consists of 21 essential-tremor (ET) subjects and 19 Parkinson-disease (PD) subjects, is used to obtain the threshold value of the classification factor differentiating between the two subjects. The test data set, which consists of 20 ET and 20 PD subjects, is used to test the technique and evaluate its performance. A “voting” between three results obtained from accelerometer signal and two EMG signals is applied to obtain the final discrimination. A total accuracy of discrimination of 85% is obtained.  相似文献

Previous studies have associated amplitude and frequency characteristics of the electromyogram (EMG) to the risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) with repetitive tasks. However, few studies have investigated whether EMG variability and between-muscle activity characteristics may be associated with MSD risk. Twenty-six healthy volunteers (13 men, 13 women) performed a repetitive pointing task at shoulder height until scoring 8 on a Borg CR-10 scale. Electromyographic (EMG) signals were recorded from six neck/shoulder muscle sites. EMG amplitude (RMS), variability and mutual information (MI) among muscle pairs were computed. Muscle fatigue was evidenced by increased EMG RMS of four muscles (Upper Trapezius (UT): +17%; supraspinatus (SUPRA): +28%; middle deltoid: +13%; biceps brachii: +38%) and increased SUPRA variability. Correlations between minute 1 patterns and endurance time indicated that in women, initially high variability in UTR (r = 0.79) and SUPRA (r = 0.71) predicted higher endurance, whereas in men, initially low MI in LT–UT (?0.69) and in LT–SUPRA (?0.77) pairs predicted high endurance. Significant correlations suggest that variability and between-muscle patterns may be associated with fatigue and injury mechanisms, in a gender-specific way. Differing fatigue mechanisms between genders could help explain gender differences in injury mechanisms.  相似文献

This work aimed to characterise the whole human muscle input/output law during electrical stimulation with triangular varying frequency and amplitude trains through combined analysis of torque, mechanomyogram (MMG) and electromyogram (EMG).The tibialis anterior (TA) of ten subjects (age 23–35 years) was investigated during static contraction obtained through neuromuscular electrical stimulation. After potentiation, TA underwent two 15 s stimulation patterns: (a) frequency triangle (FT): 2 > 35 > 2 Hz at Vmax (amplitude providing full motor unit recruitment); (b) amplitude triangle (AT): Vmin > Vmax > Vmin (Vmin providing TA least mechanical response) at 35 Hz. 2 > 35 Hz or Vmin > Vmax as well as 35 > 2 Hz or Vmax > Vmin were defined as up-going ramp (UGR) and down-going ramp (DGR), respectively. TA torque, MMG and EMG were detected by a load cell, an optical laser distance sensor and a probe with two silver bar electrodes, respectively. For both FT and AT, only the two mechanical signals resulted always larger in DGR than in UGR, during AT extra-torque and extra-MMG were present even in the first 1/3 of the amplitude range where EMG data presented no significant differences between DGR and UGR.Our data suggest that extra-torque and extra-displacement are evident for both FT and AT, being mainly attributed to an intrinsic muscle property.  相似文献

Vaginal probes may induce changes in pelvic floor muscle (PFM) recruitment by the very presence of the probes. Fine-wire electrodes allow us to detect muscle activation parameters without altering the natural position and shape of the PFMs. The purpose of this study was to determine whether PFM activation is altered by changes in sensory feedback, muscle length or tissue position caused by two different vaginal probes used to record surface electromyography (EMG). Twelve continent women (30.1 ± 5.4 years), performed PFM maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs) in supine while fine-wire EMG was recorded bilaterally from the PFMs under three conditions: (a) without any probe inserted into the vagina, (b) while a Femiscan? probe was in situ, and (c) while a Periform? vaginal probe was in situ. The reliability of the fine wire EMG data was assessed using intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) and coefficients of variation (CV). A repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) model was used to determine if there were differences in EMG amplitude recorded when the different vaginal probes were in situ. For each condition the between-trial reliability was excellent, ICC(3,1) = 0.93–0.96, (p < 0.001) and CV = 11.2–21.8%. There were no differences in peak EMG amplitude recorded during the MVCs across the three conditions (no probe 63.4 ± 48.4 μV, Femiscan? 55.3 ± 42.4 μV, Periform? 59.4 ± 42.2 μV, p = 0.178). These results suggest that women produce consistent MVCs over multiple contractions, and that PFM muscle activation is not affected by different probes inserted into the vagina.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to explore changes in the spatial distribution of erector spinae electromyography amplitude during static, sustained contractions and during contractions of increasing load. Surface electromyographic (EMG) signals were detected from nine healthy subjects using a grid of 13 × 5 electrodes placed unilaterally over the lumbar erector spinae musculature. Subjects stood in a 20° forward flexed position and performed: (1) six 20-s long contractions with loads ranging from 2.5 kg to 12.5 kg (2.5 kg increments) and (2) a 6 min sustained contraction with 7.5 kg load. Root mean square (RMS) and mean power spectral frequency (MNF) were computed from the recorded EMG signals. EMG RMS increased (P < 0.0001) and MNF remained constant during contractions of increased load. During the sustained contraction, MNF decreased (P < 0.0001) and RMS did not change over time. The centroid (center of activity) of the RMS map shifted caudally (P < 0.0001) with time during the sustained contraction but did not change with varying load. These results suggest a change in the distribution of erector spinae muscle activity with fatigue and a uniform distribution of muscle activation across loads.  相似文献

This study analyses the spatial distribution of individual motor unit potentials (MUPs) over the skin surface and the influence of motor unit depth and recording configuration on this distribution. Multichannel surface (13 × 5 electrode grid) and intramuscular (wire electrodes inserted with needles of lengths 15 and 25 mm) electromyographic (EMG) signals were concurrently recorded with monopolar derivations from the biceps brachii muscle of 10 healthy subjects during 60-s isometric contractions at 20% of the maximum torque. Multichannel monopolar MUPs of the target motor unit were obtained by spike-triggered averaging of the surface EMG. Amplitude and frequency characteristics of monopolar and bipolar MUPs were calculated for locations along the fibers’ direction (longitudinal), and along the direction perpendicular (transverse) to the fibers. In the longitudinal direction, monopolar and bipolar MUPs exhibited marked amplitude changes that extended for 16–32 mm and 16–24 mm over the innervation and tendon zones, respectively. The variation of monopolar and bipolar MUP characteristics was not symmetrical about the innervation zone. Motor unit depth had a considerable influence on the relative longitudinal variation of amplitude for monopolar MUPs, but not for bipolar MUPs. The transverse extension of bipolar MUPs ranged between 24 and 32 mm, whereas that of monopolar MUPs ranged between 72 and 96 mm. The mean power spectral frequency of surface MUPs was highly dependent on the transverse electrode location but not on depth. This study provides a basis for the interpretation of the contribution of individual motor units to the interference surface EMG signal.  相似文献

The pattern of tonic and phasic components in an EMG signal reflects the underlying behaviour of the central nervous system (CNS) in controlling the musculature. One avenue for gaining a better understanding of this behaviour is to seek a quantitative characterisation of these phasic and tonic components. We propose that these signal characteristics can range between unvarying, tonic and intermittent, phasic activation through a continuum of EMG amplitude modulation. In this paper, we present two new algorithms for quantifying amplitude modulation: a linear-envelope approach, and a mathematical morphology approach. In addition we present an algorithm for synthesising EMG signals with known amplitude modulation. The efficacy of the synthesis algorithm is demonstrated using real EMG data. We present an evaluation and comparison of the two algorithms for quantifying amplitude modulation based on synthetic data generated by the proposed synthesis algorithm. The results demonstrate that the EMG synthesis parameters represent 91.9% and 96.2% of the variance of linear-envelopes extracted from lumbo-pelvic muscle EMG signals collected from subjects performing a repetitive-movement task. This depended, however, on the muscle and movement-speed considered (F = 4.02, p < 0.001). Coefficients of determination between input and output amplitude modulation variables were used to quantify the accuracy of the linear-envelope and morphological signal processing algorithms. The linear-envelope algorithm exhibited higher coefficients of determination than the most accurate morphological approach (and hence greater accuracy, T = 8.16, p < 0.001). Similarly, the standard deviation of the coefficients of determination was 1.691 times smaller (p < 0.001). This signal processing algorithm represents a novel tool for the quantification of amplitude modulation in continuous EMG signals and can be used in the study of CNS motor control of the musculature in repetitive-movement tasks.  相似文献
