The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of neuromuscular fatigue and gender on peroneus brevis muscle (PB) and peroneus longus muscle (PL) reflexes elicited by sudden ankle inversion. Sixteen males and fifteen females stood on a "trap-door" platform that suddenly inverted the ankle 20 degrees when released. The resulting movement elicited peroneal reflexes. Reflex measurements were collected both before and after fatiguing the ankle evertors. Reflex delay in the PB and PL was not affected by fatigue, gender, or their interaction. Reflex amplitude in the PL exhibited no main effect of fatigue or gender, but their interaction was significant. Pairwise comparisons revealed PL reflex amplitude decreased by 11.3% in males (p=0.008) and increased 22.1% in females (p=0.003) with fatigue. A similar trend was found in the PB, but was not statistically significant. This opposite effect in females and males may be due to differences in how males and females compensate for fatigue, and may be related to the gender difference in ankle injury rate.  相似文献

Cryotherapy and ankle bracing are often used in conjunction as a treatment for ankle injury. No studies have evaluated the combined effect of these treatments on reflex responses during inversion perturbation. This study examined the combined influence of ankle bracing and joint cooling on peroneus longus (PL) muscle response during ankle inversion. A 2 × 2 RM factorial design guided this study; the independent variables were: ankle brace condition (lace-up brace, control), and treatment (ice, control), and the dependent variables studied were PL stretch reflex latency (ms), and PL stretch reflex amplitude (% of max). Twenty-four healthy participants completed 5 trials of a sudden inversion perturbation to the ankle/foot complex under each ankle brace and cryotherapy treatment condition. No two-way interaction was observed between ankle brace and treatment conditions on PL latency (P = 0.283) and amplitude (P = 0.884). The ankle brace condition did not differ from control on PL latency and amplitude. Cooling the ankle joint did not alter PL latency or amplitude compared to the no-ice treatment. Ankle bracing combined with joint cooling does not have a deleterious effect on dynamic ankle joint stabilization during an inversion perturbation in normal subjects.  相似文献

Asymmetric osteoarthritis (OA) is a common type of OA in the ankle joint. OA also influences the muscles surrounding a joint, however, little is known about the muscle activation in asymmetric ankle OA. Therefore, the aim of this study was to characterize the patients’ muscle activation during isometric ankle torque measurements and level walking. Surface electromyography (EMG) was measured of gastrocnemius medialis (GM) and lateralis (GL), soleus (SO), tibialis anterior (TA), and peroneus longus (PL) in 12 healthy subjects and 12 ankle OA patients. To obtain time and frequency components of the EMG power a wavelet transformation was performed. Furthermore, entropy was introduced to characterize the homogeneity of the wavelet patterns.Patients produced lower plantar- and dorsiflexion torques and their TA wavelet spectrum was shifted towards lower frequencies. While walking, the patients’ muscles were active with a lower intensity and over a broader time–frequency region. In contrast to controls and varus OA patients, maximal GM activity of valgus OA patients lagged behind the activity of GL and SO. In both tasks, PL of the valgus patients contained more low frequency power. The results of this study will help to assess whether surgical interventions of ankle OA can reestablish the muscle activation patterns.  相似文献

Recent studies have revealed that the stretch reflex responses of both ankle flexor and extensor muscles are coaugmented in the early stance phase of human walking, suggesting that these coaugmented reflex responses contribute to secure foot stabilization around the heel strike. To test whether the reflex responses mediated by the stretch reflex pathway are actually induced in both the ankle flexor and extensor muscles when the supportive surface is suddenly destabilized, we investigated the electromyographic (EMG) responses induced after a sudden drop of the supportive surface at the early stance phase of human walking. While subjects walked on a walkway, the specially designed movable supportive surface was unexpectedly dropped 10 mm during the early stance phase. The results showed that short-latency reflex EMG responses after the impact of the drop (<50 ms) were consistently observed in both the ankle flexor and extensor muscles in the perturbed leg. Of particular interest was that a distinct response appeared in the tibialis anterior muscle, although this muscle showed little background EMG activity during the stance phase. These results indicated that the reflex activities in the ankle muscles certainly acted when the supportive surface was unexpectedly destabilized just after the heel strike during walking. These reflex responses were most probably mediated by the facilitated stretch reflex pathways of the ankle muscles at the early stance phase and were suggested to be relevant to secure stabilization around the ankle joint during human walking.  相似文献

The use of a tilt platform to simulate a lateral ankle sprain and record muscle reaction time is a well-established procedure. However, a potential caveat is that repetitive ankle perturbation may cause a natural attenuation of the reflex latency and amplitude. This is an important area to investigate as many researchers examine the effect of an intervention on muscle reaction time. Muscle reaction time, peak and average amplitude of the peroneus longus and tibialis anterior in response to a simulated lateral ankle sprain (combined inversion and plantar flexion movement) were calculated in twenty-two physically active participants. The 40 perturbations were divided into 4 even groups of 10 dominant limb perturbations. Within-participants repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests were conducted to assess the effect of habituation over time for each variable. There was a significant reduction in the peroneus longus average amplitude between the aggregated first and last 10 consecutive ankle perturbations (F2.15,45.09 = 3.90, P = 0.03, ɳp2 = 0.16). Authors should implement no more than a maximum of 30 consecutive ankle perturbations (inclusive of practice perturbations) in future protocols simulating a lateral ankle sprain in an effort to avoid significant attenuation of muscle activity.  相似文献

The leopard frog (Rana pipiens) is an excellent jumper that can reach high take-off velocities and accelerations. It is diurnal, using long, explosive jumps to capture prey and escape predators. The marine toad (Bufo marinus) is a cryptic, nocturnal toad, typically using short, slow hops, or sometimes walking, to patrol its feeding area. Typical of frogs with these different locomotor styles, Rana has relatively long hindlimbs and large (by mass) hindlimb extensor muscles compared to Bufo. We studied the isometric contractile properties of their extensor muscles and found differences that correlate with their different hopping performances. At the hip (semimembranosus, SM), knee (peroneus, Per) and ankle (plantaris longus, PL), we found that Rana's muscles tended to produce greater maximum isometric force relative to body mass, although the difference was significant only for PL. This suggests that differences in force capability at the ankle may be more important than at other joints to produce divergent hopping performances. Maximum isometric force scaled with body mass so that the smaller Rana has relatively larger muscles and force differences between species may reflect size differences only. In addition, Rana's muscles exhibited greater passive resistance to elongation, implying more elastic tissue is present, which may amplify force at take-off due to elastic recoil. Rana's muscles also achieved a higher percentage of maximum force at lower stimulus inputs (frequencies and durations) than in Bufo, perhaps amplifying the differences in force available for limb extension during natural stimulation. Twitch contraction and relaxation times tended to be faster in Rana, although variation was great, so that differences were significant only for Per. Fatigability also tended to be greater in Rana muscles, although, again, values reached significance in only one muscle (PL). Thus, in addition to biomechanical effects, differences in hopping performance may also be determined by diverse physiological properties of the muscles.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether neuromuscular adaptations at the site of injury or neural adaptation remote to the injury are affected in individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI). Electromyography data were collected from the peroneus longus (PL) and tibialis anterior during an ankle joint reaction time task in 12 participants with unilateral CAI and 12 healthy control participants. Following an auditory cue, time to onset of muscle activity (pre-motor time) and time from onset of muscle activity to movement (motor time) were measured during rapid ankle eversion and dorsiflexion. Reaction time for ankle eversion on the affected side was significantly slower in the CAI group than the control group, due to significantly slower motor time for the PL. Changes in motor time for the affected PL in participants with CAI may be attributed to a combination of factors associated with local tissue changes.  相似文献

A study of the mechanical properties of the twitch motor units in the ankle extensor muscles of bullfrogs was undertaken to expand our view of the diversity of motor unit properties among vertebrates. Two muscles were chosen that represent a wide range of extensor function: the plantaris longus (PL) is a large muscle providing most of the force for ankle extension in hopping and swimming, and the tibialis posticus (TP) is relatively small and may act as an ankle stabilizer or be primarily postural in function. Both muscles have highly fatigable motor units, but also some (especially in TP) low or non-fatigable ones. Mean tetanic tensions of motor units in both muscles are relatively large as compared with those of mammals but are especially large in PL, No clear correlations were found between contraction times and either motor unit tetanic tensions or fatigability, nor did the motor units fall into clearly defined types based on any functional parameters. Overall contraction and relaxation times are slow compared with those of mammals and are somewhat slow compared to those of other frogs; unlike results from earlier studies, the large units of PL are slower than the small units of TP. This results in PL units reaching fused tetani at lower stimulus frequencies. The twitch/tetanus and force/frequency ratios in PL motor units are much larger than those of TP, giving PL units greater relative forces at lower stimulus rates. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of different types of ankle sprains on the response latency of the peroneus longus and peroneus brevis to an inversion perturbation, as well as the time to complete the perturbation (time to maximum inversion). To create a forced inversion moment of the ankle, an outer sole with fulcrum was used to cause 25 degrees of inversion at the ankle upon landing from a 27 cm step-down task. Forty participants completed the study: 15 participants had no history of any ankle sprain, 15 participants had a history of a lateral ankle sprain, and 10 participants had a history of a high ankle sprain. There was not a significant difference between the injury groups for the latency measurements or the time to maximum inversion. These findings indicate that a previous lateral ankle sprain or high ankle sprain does not affect the latency of the peroneal muscles or the time to complete the inversion range of motion.  相似文献

As a background for studies concerning the effects of training on the properties and fibre type composition of skeletal muscle, information is needed concerning the normal duration of muscle use per day. Data of this kind were collected from adult cats, using implanted electrodes for electromyographic recording from hindlimb muscles acting across the ankle joint: extensor digitorum longus (EDL), tibialis anterior (TA), peroneus longus (PL), lateral gastrocnemius (LG) and soleus (SOL). The accumulated duration of any recorded activity was expressed, for each electrode site, as a percentage of total sampling time ("duty time"). As measured intermittently across 24 h periods (4 min sampling per 30 min), these duty times were markedly and significantly different among the various muscles, averages varying from 1.9% for EDL up to 9.5% for posterior PL and 13.9% for SOL. The distribution of activity across the various muscles was markedly different between highly active periods (mid-day) and periods of rest (mid-night). The 24 h duty times were strongly and significantly correlated to duty times obtained for only mid-day activity but not to those for only mid-night activity. Following the end of the physiological measurements, the animals were sacrificed and the muscles were analyzed with regard to fibre type composition (histochemistry). There was a significant positive correlation between the 24 h duty time and the percentage of type I fibres ("slow"). In the Discussion, the present results from cats are briefly compared to previously published data for humans.  相似文献

The length-force relations of nine different skeletal muscles in the hindlimb of the cat were determined experimentally, with electrical stimulation of the sciatic nerve as the activation mode. It was shown that the active-, passive-, and total-force patterns varied widely among the muscles. The tibialis posterior (TP), medial and lateral gastrocnemius (MG, LG) and flexor digitorum longus (FDL) had a symmetric active-force curve, whereas the tibialis anterior (TA), peroneus brevis (PB), peroneus longus (PL), extensor digitorum longus (EDL), and soleus (SOL) had an asymmetric curve which exhibits about 25% of the maximal isometric force at extreme lengths. The SOL, EDL, and LG had a low-level passive force which appeared at short muscle length, whereas all other muscles exhibited initial passive force just before the optimal length. The total force was rising quasi-linearly for the SOL, whereas the other muscles exhibited an intermediate plateau about the optimal length. The LG and FDL had a substantial but temporary intermediate dip in the total force as the muscle was elongated past the optimal length. The elongation range of the various muscles also varied, ranging from +/- 15 to +/- 30% of the optimal length. The elongation range was symmetric for the FDL, LG, MG, TP, SOL, and EDL, and asymmetric for the PL, PB, and TA, being -12 to + 17%, -12 to + 17%, and -35 to + 12%, respectively. Two different models which incorporate muscle architecture were successfully fitted to the experimental data of the muscles except for the MG and TA. The architecture of these two muscles is highly nonhomogeneous and contains compartments with two pennation patterns or two different optimal lengths. New models, which add spatially and temporally the individual characteristics of each compartment of the muscles, were constructed for these two muscles. The new models demonstrated high correlation to the experimental data obtained from the MG and TA. It was concluded that the length-force relation varies widely among various skeletal muscles and is probably dependent on the primary function of the muscle in the context of integrated movement; this is a manifestation of architectural factors such as fiber pennation pattern and angle, cross-sectional area, ratio of muscle to tendon length, distribution of the fiber length within the muscle and compartmental pennation.  相似文献

Functional performance tests (FPTs) that consist of movements, such as hopping, landing, and cutting, provide useful measurements. Although some tests have been established for kinematic studies of the knee joint, very few tests have been established for the ankle joint. To use the FPT as a test battery for patients with an ankle sprain, it is necessary to document typical patterns of muscle activation and range of motion (ROM) of the ankle joint during FPTs. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the pattern of the ROM of the ankle inversion/eversion and the muscle activity of the peroneus longus muscle (PL) and the tibial anterior muscle (TA) in normal subjects during the side-hop test. To emphasize the characteristics of ROM and electromyography (EMG) at each phase, the side-hop tests were divided into 4 phases: lateral-hop contact phase (LC), lateral-hop flight phase (LF), medial hop contact phase (MC), and medial hop flight phase (MF), and the ROM of ankle inversion/eversion, a peak angle of ankle inversion, and Integral EMG (IEMG) of PL and TA compared among 4 phases. Fifteen male subjects with no symptoms of ankle joint problems participated in this research. The ROM of ankle inversion/eversion during the side-hop test was 27 ± 3.8° (mean ± SD), and there was a significant difference in the ROM of ankle inversion/eversion among 4 phases (p < 0.05). The phase in which the widest ROM was presented was the MF. A peak angle of the ankle inversion at MC was significantly greater than at LC and MF (p <0.05). A peak angle of the ankle inversion at LF was significantly greater than at LC and MF. The PL remained contracting with 50-160% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). The IEMGs of PL in both the contact phases were significantly greater than in both the flight phases (p < 0.05). In addition, the PL activity at LC was significantly greater than at MC. The TA remained contracting at 50-80% of MVC through the side-hop test. The IEMG of TA at both the contact phases was significantly greater than at 2 flight phases. However, there was no significant difference between LC and MF. Results of this study could be useful as basic data when evaluating the validity of the side-hop test for patients with ankle sprain.  相似文献

The force-velocity properties of skeletal muscle have an important influence on locomotor performance. All skeletal muscles produce less force the faster they shorten and typically develop maximal power at velocities of approximately 30% of maximum shortening velocity (V(max)). We used direct measurements of muscle mechanical function in two ankle extensor muscles of wild turkeys to test the hypothesis that during level running muscles operate at velocities that favor force rather than power. Sonomicrometer measurements of muscle length, tendon strain-gauge measurements of muscle force, and bipolar electromyographs were taken as animals ran over a range of speeds and inclines. These measurements were integrated with previously measured values of muscle V(max) for these muscles to calculate relative shortening velocity (V/V(max)). At all speeds for level running the V/V(max) values of the lateral gastrocnemius and the peroneus longus were low (<0.05), corresponding to the region of the force-velocity relationship where the muscles were capable of producing 90% of peak isometric force but only 35% of peak isotonic power. V/V(max) increased in response to the demand for mechanical power with increases in running incline and decreased to negative values to absorb energy during downhill running. Measurements of integrated electromyograph activity indicated that the volume of muscle required to produce a given force increased from level to uphill running. This observation is consistent with the idea that V/V(max) is an important determinant of locomotor cost because it affects the volume of muscle that must be recruited to support body weight.  相似文献

Background

The peroneal muscles are the most effective lateral stabilisers whose tension braces the ankle joint complex against excessive supination. The purpose of this study was to identify the morphological and biomechanical effects of two machine-based shank muscle training methods.

Methods

Twenty-two healthy male recreationally active sports students performed ten weeks of single-set high resistance strength training with 3 training sessions per week. The subjects conducted subtalar pronator/supinator muscle training (ST) with the right leg by using a custom-made apparatus; the left foot muscles were exercised with machine-based talocrural plantar and dorsiflexor training (TT). Muscle strength (MVIC), muscle volume and foot biomechanics (rearfoot motion, ground reaction forces, muscle reaction times) during a sudden ankle supination were recorded before and after the intervention.

Results

Compared to TT, ST resulted in significantly higher pronator (14% vs. 8%, P<0.01) and supinator MVIC (25% vs. 12%, P<0.01). During sudden foot inversions, both ST and TT resulted in reduced supination velocity (-12%; P<0.01). The muscle reaction onset time was faster after the training in peroneus longus (PL) (P<0.01). Muscle volume of PL (P<0.01) and TA (P<0.01) increased significantly after both ST and TT.

Conclusion

After both ST and TT, the ankle joint complex is mechanically more stabilised against sudden supinations due to the muscle volume increase of PL and TA. As the reduced supination velocities indicate, the strength training effects are already present during free-fall. According to a sudden ankle supination in standing position, both machine-based dorsiflexor and pronator strength training is recommended for enhancing the mechanical stability of the ankle.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between the ankle joint angle and maximum isometric force of the toe flexor muscles. Toe flexor strength and electromyography activity of the foot muscles were measured in 12 healthy men at 6 different ankle joint angles with the knee joint at 90 deg in the sitting position. To measure the maximum isometric force of the toe flexor muscles, subjects exerted maximum force on a toe grip dynamometer while the activity levels of the intrinsic and extrinsic plantar muscles were measured. The relation between ankle joint angle and maximum isometric force of the toe flexor muscles was determined, and the isometric force exhibited a peak when the ankle joint was at 70–90 deg on average. From this optimal neutral position, the isometric force gradually decreased and reached its nadir in the plantar flexion position (i.e., 120 deg). The EMG activity of the abductor hallucis (intrinsic plantar muscle) and peroneus longus (extrinsic plantar muscle) did not differ at any ankle joint angles. The results of this study suggest that the force generation of toe flexor muscles is regulated at the ankle joint and that changes in the length-tension relations of the extrinsic plantar muscle could be a reason for the force-generating capacity at the metatarsophalangeal joint when the ankle joint angle is changed.  相似文献

Analyzing motor unit (MU) activities of peroneus muscles may reveal the causes of force control deficits of ankle eversion. This study aimed to examine peroneus muscles’ MU discharge characteristics and associations between force fluctuation and variability of the neural drive in healthy participants. Thirty-one healthy males participated in this study. MU activities were identified from high-density surface electromyography of peroneus muscles during ankle eversion at 15 and 30% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). Participants increased the contraction level until reaching the target and held it for 15 s. The central 10 s of the hold phase were used for analysis. A cumulative spike train (CST) was calculated using MU firings. Variabilities of the force and CST are represented by the coefficient of variation (CoV). Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was used to assess the association between CoV of force and CoV of CST. For 15 and 30 % MVC trials, CoV of force was 1.86 ± 1.59 and 1.57 ± 1.26%, and CoV of CST was 5.01 ± 3.24 and 4.51 ± 2.78%, respectively. The correlation was significant at 15% (rho = 0.27, p < 0.001) and 30% (rho = 0.32, p < 0.001) MVC. Our findings suggest that in peroneus muscles, force fluctuation weakly to moderately correlates with neural drive variability.  相似文献

Recent work has provided measurements of power output in avian skeletal muscles during running and flying, but little is known about the contractile properties of avian skeletal muscle. We used an in situ preparation to characterize the force-velocity properties of two hind limb muscles, the lateral gastrocnemius (LG) and peroneus longus (PL), in Wild Turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo). A servomotor measured shortening velocity for at least six different loads over the plateau region of the length-tension curve. The Hill equation was fit to the data to determine maximum shortening velocity and peak instantaneous power. Maximum unloaded shortening velocity was 13.0+/-1.6 L s(-1) for the LG muscle and 14.8+/-1.0 L s(-1) for the PL muscle (mean+/-S.E.M.). These velocities are within the range of values published for reptilian and mammalian muscles. Values recorded for maximum isometric force per cross-sectional area, 271+/-28 kPa for the LG and 257+/-30.5 kPa for the PL, and peak instantaneous power output, 341.7+/-36.4 W kg(-1) for the LG and 319.4+/-42.5 W kg(-1) for the PL, were also within the range of published values for vertebrate muscle. The force-velocity properties of turkey LG and PL muscle do not reveal any extreme differences in the mechanical potential between avian and other vertebrate muscle.  相似文献

Muscle moment arms at the human knee and ankle were estimated from muscle length changes measured as a function of joint flexion angle in cadaver specimens. Nearly all lower-leg muscles were studied: extensor digitorum longus, extensor hallucis longus, flexor digitorum longus, flexor hallucis longus, gastrocnemius lateralis, gastrocnemius medialis, peroneus brevis, peroneus longus, peroneus tertius, plantaris, soleus, tibialis anterior, and tibialis posterior. Noise in measured muscle length was filtered by means of quintic splines. Moment arms of the mm. gastrocnemii appear to be much more dependent on joint flexion angles than was generally assumed by other investigators. Some consequences for earlier analyses are mentioned.  相似文献

BackgroundSpasticity and spastic dystonia are two separate phenomena of the upper motor neuron syndrome. Spasticity is clinically defined by velocity-dependent hypertonia and tendon jerk hyperreflexia due to the hyper-excitability of the stretch reflex. Spastic dystonia is the inability to relax a muscle leading to a spontaneous tonic contraction. Both spasticity and spastic dystonia are present in patients who are at rest; however, only patients with spasticity are actually able to kept their muscles relaxed prior to muscle stretch. The idea that has inspired the present work is that also in patients with spastic dystonia the stretch reflex is likely to be hyper-excitable. Therefore, velocity-dependent hypertonia could be mediated not only by spasticity, but also by spastic dystonia.MethodsTonic stretch reflexes in the rectus femoris muscle were evoked in 30 patients with multiple sclerosis showing velocity-dependent hypertonia of leg extensors and the habituation of the reflex was studied. Moreover, the capability of relax the muscle prior to muscle stretch (spastic dystonia) was also investigated.ResultsA tonic stretch reflex was evoked in all the enrolled patients. 73% of the patients were able to relax their rectus femoris muscle prior to stretch (spasticity). In the overwhelming majority of these patients, the tonic stretch reflex decreased during repeated stretches. In the remaining 27% of the subjects, the muscle was tonically activated prior to muscle stretch (spastic dystonia). In the patients in whom spastic dystonia progressively increased over the subsequent stretches (50% of the subjects with spastic dystonia), the habituation of the reflex was replaced by a progressive reflex facilitation.DiscussionThis study shows for the first time that velocity-dependent hypertonia can be caused by two distinct phenomena: spasticity and spastic dystonia. The habituation of the tonic stretch reflex, which is a typical feature of spasticity, is replaced by a reflex facilitation in the half of the subject with spastic dystonia. These preliminary findings suggest that differentiating the two types of velocity-dependent muscle hypertonia (spasticity and spastic dystonia) could be clinically relevant.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to characterize the effects of aging on the stretch reflex in the ankle muscles, and in particular to compare the effects on the ankle dorsi-flexor (tibialis anterior: TA) and the plantar-flexor (soleus: SOL). Stretch reflex responses were elicited in the TA and SOL at rest and during weak voluntary contractions in 20 elderly and 23 young volunteers. The results indicated that, in the TA muscle, the elderly group had a remarkably larger long-latency reflex (LLR), whereas no aging effect was found in the short latency reflex (SLR). These results were very different from those in the SOL muscle, which showed significant aging effects in the SLR and medium latency reflex (MLR), but not in the LLR. Given the fact that the LLR of the TA stretch reflex includes the cortical pathway, it is probable that the effects of aging on the TA stretch reflex involve alterations not only at the spinal level but also at the cortical level. The present results indicate that the stretch reflexes of each of the ankle antagonistic muscles are affected differently by aging, which might have relevance to the neural properties of each muscle.  相似文献
