The aim of this study was to determine if athletes with a history of hamstring strain injury display lower levels of surface EMG (sEMG) activity and median power frequency in the previously injured hamstring muscle during maximal voluntary contractions. Recreational athletes were recruited, 13 with a history of unilateral hamstring strain injury and 15 without prior injury. All athletes undertook isokinetic dynamometry testing of the knee flexors and sEMG assessment of the biceps femoris long head (BF) and medial hamstrings (MHs) during concentric and eccentric contractions at ±180 and ±60° s?1. The knee flexors on the previously injured limb were weaker at all contraction speeds compared to the uninjured limb (+180° s?1 p = 0.0036; +60° s?1 p = 0.0013; ?60° s?1 p = 0.0007; ?180° s?1 p = 0.0007) whilst sEMG activity was only lower in the BF during eccentric contractions (?60° s?1 p = 0.0025; ?180° s?1 p = 0.0003). There were no between limb differences in MH sEMG activity or median power frequency from either BF or MH in the injured group. The uninjured group showed no between limb differences in any of the tested variables. Secondary analysis comparing the between limb difference in the injured and the uninjured groups, confirmed that previously injured hamstrings were mostly weaker (+180° s?1 p = 0.2208; +60° s?1 p = 0.0379; ?60° ?1 p = 0.0312; ?180° s?1 p = 0.0110) and that deficits in sEMG were confined to the BF during eccentric contractions (?60° s?1 p = 0.0542; ?180° s?1 p = 0.0473). Previously injured hamstrings were weaker and BF sEMG activity was lower than the contralateral uninjured hamstring. This has implications for hamstring strain injury prevention and rehabilitation which should consider altered neural function following hamstring strain injury.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to examine whether innervation zone (IZ) location remains stable at different levels of isometric contraction in the biceps brachii muscle (BB), and to determine how the proximity of the IZ affects common surface electromyography (sEMG) parameters. Twelve subjects performed maximal (MVC) and submaximal voluntary isometric contractions at 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 75% of MVC. sEMG signals were recorded with a 13 rows × 5 columns grid of electrodes from the short head of BB. The IZ shifted in the proximal direction by up to 2.4 cm, depending upon the subject and electrode column. The mean shift of all the columns was 0.6 ± 0.4 cm (10% vs. 100% MVC, P < 0.001). This shift biased the average values of mean frequency (+21.8 ± 9.9 Hz, P < 0.001), root mean square (?0.16 ± 0.15 mV, P < 0.05) and conduction velocity (?1.15 ± 0.93 m/s, P < 0.01) in the channels immediately proximal to the IZ. The shift in IZ could be explained by shortening of the muscle fibers, and thus lengthening of the (distal) tendon due to increasing force. These results underline the importance of individual investigation of IZ locations before the placement of sEMG electrodes, even in isometric contractions.  相似文献

The effects of fatigue on maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) parameters were examined by using force and surface electromyography (sEMG) signals of the biceps brachii muscles (BBM) of 12 subjects. The purpose of the study was to find the sEMG time interval of the MVC recordings which is not affected by the muscle fatigue. At least 10 s of force and sEMG signals of BBM were recorded simultaneously during MVC. The subjects reached the maximum force level within 2 s by slightly increasing the force, and then contracted the BBM maximally. The time index of each sEMG and force signal were labeled with respect to the time index of the maximum force (i.e. after the time normalization, each sEMG or force signal’s 0 s time index corresponds to maximum force point). Then, the first 8 s of sEMG and force signals were divided into 0.5 s intervals. Mean force, median frequency (MF) and integrated EMG (iEMG) values were calculated for each interval. Amplitude normalization was performed by dividing the force signals to their mean values of 0 s time intervals (i.e. ?0.25 to 0.25 s). A similar amplitude normalization procedure was repeated for the iEMG and MF signals. Statistical analysis (Friedman test with Dunn’s post hoc test) was performed on the time and amplitude normalized signals (MF, iEMG). Although the ANOVA results did not give statistically significant information about the onset of the muscle fatigue, linear regression (mean force vs. time) showed a decreasing slope (Pearson-r = 0.9462, p < 0.0001) starting from the 0 s time interval. Thus, it might be assumed that the muscle fatigue starts after the 0 s time interval as the muscles cannot attain their peak force levels. This implies that the most reliable interval for MVC calculation which is not affected by the muscle fatigue is from the onset of the EMG activity to the peak force time. Mean, SD, and range of this interval (excluding 2 s gradual increase time) for 12 subjects were 2353, 1258 ms and 536–4186 ms, respectively. Exceeding this interval introduces estimation errors in the maximum amplitude calculations of MVC–sEMG studies for BBM. It was shown that, simultaneous recording of force and sEMG signals was required to calculate the maximum amplitude of the MVC–sEMG more accurately.  相似文献

Purpose: To verify the precision of surface electromyography (sEMG) in locating the innervation zone of the gracilis muscle, by comparing the location of the IZ estimated by means of sEMG with in vivo location of the nerve bundle entry point in patients before graciloplasty procedure due to fecal incontinence. Methods: Nine patients who qualified for the graciloplasty procedure underwent sEMG on both gracilis muscle before their operations. During surgery the nerve bundle was identified by means of electrical stimulation. The distance between the proximal attachment and the nerve entry point into the muscle’s body was measured. Both measurements (sEMG and in vivo identification) were compared for each subject. Results: On average, the IZ was located 65.5 mm from the proximal attachment. The mean difference in location of the innervation zones in each individual was 10 ± 9.7 mm, maximal – 30 mm, the difference being statistically significant (p = 0.017). It was intraoperatively confirmed, that the nerve entered the muscle an average of 62 mm from the proximal attachment. The largest difference between the EMG IZ estimation and nerve bundle entry point was 5 mm (mean difference 2.8 mm, p = 0.767). Conclusion: Preoperative surface electromyography of both gracilis muscles is a safe, precise and reliable method of assessing the location of the innervation zones of the gracilis muscles. The asymmetry of the IZ location in left and right muscles may be important in context of technical aspects of the graciloplasty procedure.  相似文献

Muscle fiber conduction velocity (MFCV) gives critical information on neuromuscular control and can be considered a size principle parameter, being suggestive of motor unit recruitment strategies. MFCV has been recently measured during constant-load sub-maximal cycling exercise and was found to correlate positively with percentage of type I myosin heavy chain. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that MFCV measured during an incremental cycling test using surface electromyography (sEMG), can be sensitive to the different metabolic requests elicited by the exercise. In particular, the relationship between ventilatory threshold (T-vent), VO2max and MFCV was explored.Eleven male physically active subjects (age 30 ± 9 years) undertook a 1-min incremental cycling test to exhaustion. T-vent and VO2max were measured using an open circuit breath by breath gas analyzer. The sEMG was recorded from the vastus lateralis muscle with an adhesive 4-electrodes array, and the MFCV was computed on each sEMG burst over the last 30-s of each step. The mean VO2max obtained during the maximal test was 53.32 ± 2.33 ml kg?1 min?1, and the T-vent was reached at 80.77 ± 3.49% of VO2max. In all subjects reliable measures of MFCV were obtained at every exercise intensity (cross correlation values >0.8). MFCV increased linearly with the mechanical load, reaching a maximum value of 4.28 ± 0.67 m s?1 at an intensity corresponding to the T-vent. Thereafter, MFCV declined until maximal work intensities. This study demonstrates that MFCV can be used as non-invasive tool to infer MUs recruitment/derecruitment strategies even during dynamic exercise from low to maximal intensities.  相似文献

Surface myoelectric signal changes occurring during sustained isometric contractions have been extensively studied with quantitative surface electromyography (sEMG) and are described by means of some sEMG global variables in time and frequency domain (such as the median power spectral frequency). Recently, the possibility of studying local muscle O2 saturation during exercise using non-invasive methods has been enhanced thanks to the use of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). The purpose of this work was to combine NIRS and sEMG techniques to analyze the relationship between modifications of sEMG parameters and the underlying metabolic status of the exercising biceps brachii muscle. This relationship was tested under different isometric contraction modalities, namely static (ST) at 20, 40, 60 and 80%MVC and sinusoidal (SIN) at 40 ± 20 and 60 ± 20%MVC. Results clearly indicated the presence of an initial fast phase of muscle O2 desaturation followed by a slow phase, regardless of the contraction modality. Moreover, the initial rate of muscle O2 desaturation was related to the level of force output (R = 0.92), but it was independent on the contraction modality (p < 0.05). Similarly, changes in sEMG parameters were related to force level (Conduction Velocity-CV vs. Force: R = 0.87; sEMG Median Frequency-MDF vs. Force: R = 0.86). The high correlation found between CV-MDF and Tissue Oxygenation Index (TOI) slope (R = 0.73 and 0.72, respectively) suggests a strong relationship between NIRS and sEMG data. This study indicates that muscle O2 demand during isometric contractions from low to high force levels is influenced by the type of active motor units and not from the type of isometric exercise modality.  相似文献

The quick-release technique to estimate musculotendinous (MT) stiffness has been extensively used over the last years, in both animals and humans, to gain insights in the adaptive process of the series elastic component (SEC). Recently, MT stiffness quantification, i.e., SEC behavior, has been revisited for subjects not able to fully activate their muscles (effects of long-term spaceflight or non-mature muscles). Such a phenomenon can also be encountered in stunted children. So, the aim of the present study was to analyze the effect of stunting on MT stiffness taking into account possible defect in muscle activation. For this study, 20 eutrophic children (EU) with an average age of 9 years ± 4 months were compared to 11age matched stunted children (S) evaluated by the height-to-age index. The MT stiffness index was obtained with regard to stiffness–torque and stiffness–soleus EMG relationships. The children of the S group presented a significantly lower Maximal Voluntary Contraction (MVC) in plantar flexion in comparison with children of the EU group (?37.8%). The significantly lower MT stiffness index for S children (?42.6%) was evidenced only when quantified with regard to the stiffness–soleus EMG relationship (66.5 ± 42.8 vs. 38.2 ± 19.9 Nm rad?1%?1). Possible delay in fiber type differentiation or tendinous structure maturation can account for the lower MT stiffness index in S children. In conclusion, stunting during early childhood delays the differentiation and maturation processes of musculotendinous structures as shown by the lower MT stiffness quantified with regards to muscle activity, also altered for stunted prepubertal children.  相似文献

Running exercises are frequently related to muscular injuries, which may be a result of muscular imbalance. The present study aimed to verify the effects of heavy-intensity continuous running exercise on the functional and conventional hamstrings:quadriceps ratios, and also in the knee flexors and extensors EMG activity in active non-athletic individuals. Sixteen active males performed maximal isokinetic concentric and eccentric knee flexions and extensions at 60° s?1 and 180° s?1. In another session, the same procedure was conducted after a continuous running exercise at 95% onset of blood lactate accumulation. Torque and electromyographic ratios were calculated from peak torque and integrated electromyographic activity (knee flexor and extensors). Creatine kinase was measured before and 24 h after running exercise. Eccentric torque (knee flexion and extension) decreased significantly after running only at 180° s?1 (p < 0.05). No differences were found for the conventional torque ratios (p > 0.05), however, the functional torque ratios at 180° s?1 decreased significantly after running (p < 0.05). No effects on the electromyographic activity and electromyographic ratios were found (p > 0.05). Creatine kinase increased slightly 24 h after running (p < 0.05). Heavy-intensity continuous running exercise decreased knee flexor and extensor eccentric torque, and functional torque ratios under fast velocities (180° s?1), probably as result of peripheral fatigue.  相似文献

The impact of flow velocity on initial ciliate colonization dynamics on surfaces were studied in the third order Ilm stream (Thuringia, Germany) at a slow flowing site (0.09 m s?1) and two faster flowing sites (0.31 m s?1) and in flow channels at 0.05, 0.4, and 0.8 m s?1. At the slow flowing stream site, surfaces were rapidly colonized by ciliates with up to 60 cells cm?2 after 24 h. In flow channels, the majority of suspended ciliates and inorganic matter accumulated at the surface within 4.5 h at 0.05 m s?1. At 0.4 m s?1 the increase in ciliate abundance in the biofilm was highest between 72 and 168 h at about 3 cells cm?2 h?1. Faster flow velocities were tolerated by vagile flattened ciliates that live in close contact to the surface. Vagile flattened and round filter feeders preferred biofilms at slow flow velocities. Addition of inorganic particles (0, 0.6, and 7.3 mg cm?2) did not affect ciliate abundance in flow channel biofilms, but small ciliate species dominated and number of species was lowest (16 species cm?2) in biofilms at high sediment content. Although different morphotypes dominated the communities at contrasting flow velocities, all functional groups contributed to initial biofilm communities implementing all trophic links within the microbial loop.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of curcumin, the principal active compound of turmeric, on voltage-dependent K+ (Kv) channels in freshly isolated rabbit coronary arterial smooth muscle cells using the voltage-clamp technique. Curcumin reduced the Kv current in a dose-dependent manner with an apparent Kd value of 1.07 ± 0.03 μM. Although curcumin did not alter the kinetics of Kv current activation, it predominantly accelerated the decay rate of channel inactivation. The association and dissociation rate constants of curcumin were 1.35 ± 0.05 μM?1 s?1 and 1.47 ± 0.17 s?1, respectively. Curcumin did not alter the steady-state activation or inactivation curves. Application of train pulses (1 or 2 Hz) increased curcumin-induced blockade of the Kv current, and the recovery time constant also increased in the presence of curcumin suggesting, that the inhibitory action of Kv currents by curcumin was use-dependent. From these results, we concluded that curcumin inhibited vascular Kv current in a state-, time-, and use-dependent manner.  相似文献

The study had three purposes: to verify a hypothesized speed decrease during the 15 km cross-country sit skiing (CCSS) race; documenting this possible fatigue effect (speed decrease), to evaluate changes among the four laps in kinematics parameters (cycle speed, cycle duration, cycle length, duty cycle (percentage ratio between pushing and total cycle duration), pole inclination, trunk inclination and shoulder–hand distance); to compare the kinematics parameters in cross-country sit skiers of different level. Video recordings were carried out during the 2006 Turin Winter Paralympic Games with two conventional digital video-cameras positioned on a flat and an uphill (8.3°) track, respectively. Better performing skiers (G1) had significantly higher speeds than worse performers (G2) both in the flat (6.54 ± 0.13 vs. 5.89 ± 0.50 m s?1 and 5.55 ± 0.14 vs. 4.62 ± 0.22 m s?1 in the first and last lap, respectively) and in the uphill track (3.67 ± 0.45 vs. 3.05 ± 0.59 m s?1 and 3.20 ± 0.36 vs. 2.26 ± 0.36 m s?1 in the first and last lap, respectively). The G1 athletes were able to maintain the high-speed better than the G2 over the entire race. Significant differences in cycle length and duty cycle between groups would be justified by the higher physical fitness of G1 skiers.  相似文献

In surface electromyography (sEMG), the distribution of motor unit potential (MUP) velocities has been shown to reflect the proportion of faster and slower propagating MUPs. This study investigated whether the distribution of MUP velocities could distinguish between sprinters (n = 11) and endurance athletes (n = 12) in not-specifically trained muscle (biceps brachii) during prolonged dynamic exercises at low forces. sEMG was acquired during 4 min’ exercises: unloaded, 5%, 10% and 20% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). The features extracted from the sEMG were: the mean muscle conduction velocity – estimated using the inter-peak latency and cross-correlation methods, the within-subject skewness (expressing the proportions of faster and slower propagating MUPs) and the within-subject standard deviation of MUP velocities (SD-mup). Sprinters showed a greater proportion of faster propagating MUPs than endurance athletes. During fatigue, the SD-mup of sprinters broadened progressively, whereas that of endurance athletes did not. The findings suggest that sprinters conveyed a greater proportion of faster motor units than endurance athletes and that motor unit behavior during fatigue differed between groups. Thus, the distribution of MUP velocities enables distinction between a muscle of sprinters and endurance athletes during prolonged dynamic exercises at low forces.  相似文献

The 100 m is the blue ribboned event of world athletics competitions, with the winner crowned as the fastest human on Earth. Currently that fastest human is Usain Bolt, who covers 100 m in 9.58 s, achieving an average velocity of 10.43 m s?1. Bolt is a phenomenal athlete, but what is his trick? Using Hills model, relating muscle force and heat liberation to shortening velocity, we propose that Bolt is at an advantage in relative power development and biomechanical efficiency compared to his contemporaries.  相似文献

This study investigated the effect of prolonged walking with load carriage on muscle activity and fatigue in children. Fifteen Chinese male children (age = 6 years, height = 120.0 ± 5.4 cm, mass = 22.9 ± 2.6 kg) performed 20-min walking trials on treadmill (speed = 1.1 m s−1) with different backpack loads (0%, 10%, 15% and 20% body weight). Electromyography (EMG) signals from upper trapezius (UT), lower trapezius (LT) and rectus abdominis (RA) were recorded at several time intervals (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 min), and were normalized to the signals collected during maximum voluntary contraction. Integrated EMG signal (IEMG) was calculated to evaluate the muscle activity. Power spectral frequency analysis was applied to evaluate muscle fatigue by the shift of median power frequency (MPF). Results showed that a 15% body weight (BW) load significantly increased muscle activity at lower trapezius when the walking time reached 15 min. When a 20% BW load was being carried, increase in muscle activity was found from 5 min, and muscle fatigue was found from 15 min. In upper trapezius, increase of muscle activity was not found within the 20-min period, however, muscle fatigue was found from 10 min. No increased muscle activity or muscle fatigue was found in rectus abdominis. It is suggested that backpack loads for children should be restricted to no more than 15% body weight for walks of up to 20 min duration to avoid muscle fatigue.  相似文献

BackgroundBotulinum toxin (BTX) acts on the neuromuscular junction which can be located by the innervation zone (IZ). Clinically, the motor point (MP) is homologous to the IZ and it is used as the injection site of BTX. Differences in the effectiveness of the application of BTX between MP and IZ locations have been determined.ObjectiveCompare the location of the MP obtained using electrical stimulation and the location of the IZ using a linear surface electrodes array on the biceps brachii muscle.MethodsThe biceps brachii muscle of twenty men was assessed. The MP was located using the torque measurement generated by electrical stimulation. The IZ was detected using a linear surface electrodes array.ResultsA difference between the MP and the IZ positions (75.8 vs. 86.5 mm, delta 10.7 mm; p = 0.003, post-hoc power 0.89) was observed.DiscussionThe magnitude of the difference between the MP and the IZ may be clinically relevant. The IZ location using surface electromyography as a guide to optimize BTX injection is proposed.  相似文献

We measured the biomass production and ecosystem carbon CO2 exchange in a high yield grassland dominated by Miscanthus sinensis. The experimental grassland is managed by mowing once a year in winter every year and the harvested biomass on the ground is left to become the humus. The maximum aboveground and belowground biomasses were 1117 and 2803 g d.w. m?2 in our grassland. Although the high potential of our grassland for biomass production led to higher carbon uptake than with other types of grassland, the large biomass contributed to a higher respired carbon loss. Biomass increase led to a linear increase in ecosystem respiration. Over the 3 years, RE10 increased with increasing aboveground biomass. The potential gross primary production at a photosynthetic photon flux density of 2000 μmol m2 s?1 logarithmic increased with LAI. These responses of CO2 exchange to biomass production suggest this grassland behaved as weak CO2 sink or near carbon neutral (?78 and 17 g C m?2 year?1) in current management.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterization of gold nanoparticles coated with Gd-chelate (Au@GdL), where L is a conjugate of DTPA and cysteine, is described. These particles are obtained by the replacement of citrate from the gold nanoparticle surfaces with gadolinium chelate (GdL). The average size of Au@GdL is 14 nm with a loading of GdL reaching up to 2.9 × 103 per particles, and they demonstrate very high R1 relaxivity (~105 mM?1 s?1) as well as X-ray attenuation. The R1 relaxivity per [Gd] is 17.9 mM?1 s?1. The present system also exhibits macrophage-specific property, as demonstrated by histological and TEM images as well as CT and MR, rendering itself as a new class of T1 multimodal CT/MR contrast agent.  相似文献

AimsWe examined the effect of LY294002, a phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitor, on voltage-dependent K+ (Kv) channels.Main methodsElectrophysiological recordings were performed in freshly isolated rabbit coronary arterial smooth muscle cells.Key findingsThe Kv current amplitude was inhibited by LY294002 in a dose-dependent manner, with a Kd value of 1.48 μM. Without alteration of the kinetics of activation, LY294002 accelerated the decay rate of Kv channel inactivation. The rate constants of association and dissociation for LY294002 were 1.83 ± 0.01 μM? 1 s? 1 and 2.59 ± 0.14 s? 1, respectively. Application of LY294002 had no significant impact on the steady-state activation or inactivation curves. In the presence of LY294002, the recovery time constant from inactivation was increased, and Kv channel inhibition increased under train pulses (1 or 2 Hz). This indicates that LY294002-induced Kv channel inhibition is use-dependent. Furthermore, pretreatment with another PI3K inhibitor, wortmannin (10 μM), did not affect the Kv current, and did not change the inhibitory effect of LY294002.SignificanceBased on these results, we suggest that LY294002 directly blocks Kv current irrespective of PI3K inhibition.  相似文献

PurposeTo measure phrenic nerve conduction velocity in the neck in humans.ScopeWe studied 15 healthy subjects (9 men, 32.4 ± 6.7). We performed bipolar electrical phrenic stimulation in the neck, from a distal and a proximal stimulation site, and recorded diaphragm electromyographic responses on the surface of the chest. The ratio of the between-site distance to the latency difference provided phrenic velocities. Ulnar motor velocity was assessed similarly. In addition, five homogeneous patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A) were studied for validation purposes. We obtained diaphragmatic responses from the two stimulation sites in all cases. The distal latencies (anterior axillary line recording) were 6.51 ± 0.63 ms (right) and 6.13 ± 0.64 ms (left). The minimal between site distance was 39 mm. Phrenic motor velocity was 55.2 ± 6.3 m s?1 (right) and 56.3 ± 7.2 m s?1 (left). In CMT1A, phrenic velocities were 17.1 ± 8.1 m s?1 (from 7 to 32 m s?1) and were similar to ulnar and median velocities.ConclusionsPhrenic nerve velocities can be estimated in humans and compare with upper limb motor conduction velocities. This should refine the investigation of phrenic function in peripheral neuropathies.  相似文献
