This study investigated the effects of dynamic knee extension and flexion fatiguing task on torque and neuromuscular responses in young and older individuals. Eighteen young (8 males; 25.1 ± 3.2 years) and 17 older (8 males; 69.7 ± 3.7 years) volunteered. Following a maximal voluntary isometric contraction test, participants performed a fatiguing task involving 22 maximal isokinetic (concentric) knee extension and flexion contractions at 60°/s, while surface EMG was recorded simultaneously from the knee extensors (KE) and flexors (KF). Fatigue-induced relative torque reductions were similar between age groups for KE (peak torque decrease: 25.15% vs 26.81%); however, KF torque was less affected in older individuals (young vs older peak torque decrease: 27.6% vs 11.5%; p < 0.001) and this was associated with greater increase in hamstring EMG amplitude (p < 0.001) and hamstrings/quadriceps peak torque ratio (p < 0.01). Furthermore, KE was more fatigable than KF only among older individuals (peak torque decrease: 26.8% vs 11.5%; p < 0.001). These findings showed that the age-related fatigue induced by a dynamic task was greater for the KE, with greater age-related decline in KE compared to KF.  相似文献

Quadriceps weakness is prevalent with knee osteoarthritis (OA) and after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). To compensate for quadriceps dysfunction, patients often alter movement strategies. Little is known about muscle coordination during sit-to-stand (concentric) and stand-to-sit (eccentric) movements in the acute postoperative period. This investigation characterized the distribution of muscle activation between the concentric and eccentric phases during a five-time-sit-to-stand (FTSTS) movement in late stage OA and one month after TKA. Patients and healthy participants performed a FTSTS while recording bilateral ground reaction forces (GRFs) and electromyography (EMG). Concentric and eccentric ensemble averages of the GRF and EMG were calculated for the concentric and eccentric phases. Coactivation indices, integrated EMG, and GRF were calculated for each limb and phase. Patients demonstrated higher eccentric coactivation than the healthy group. Postoperative loading was higher in the nonsurgical limb. Postoperative quadriceps activity was lower in the concentric phase and higher in the eccentric phase than the healthy group. Higher coactivation in the patients resulted from sustained distribution of quadriceps activity throughout the eccentric phase. This indicated an inability to coordinate muscle firing when rapidly lowering to a chair and occurred despite unloading of the surgical limb. Although these patterns may serve as a protective strategy, they may also impede recovery of muscle function after TKA.  相似文献

Insufficient active knee flexor stiffness may predispose the anterior cruciate ligament to injury. Insufficient passive stiffness may result in insufficient active stiffness. Similarly, higher levels of musculotendinous extensibility may inhibit active and passive muscle stiffness, potentially contributing to an increased risk of injury. The literature is both limited and inconsistent concerning relationships between extensibility, passive stiffness, and active stiffness. Extensibility was measured as the maximal active knee extension angle from a supine position with the hip flexed to 90°. Passive stiffness was calculated as the slope of the moment–angle curve resulting from passive knee extension. Active stiffness was assessed via acceleration associated with damped oscillatory motion about the knee. Stepwise multiple regression indicated that passive stiffness accounted for 25% of active muscle stiffness variance. The linear combination of extensibility and passive stiffness explained only 2% more variance compared to passive stiffness alone. Musculotendinous extensibility was moderately related to passive muscle stiffness, and weakly related to active muscle stiffness. The moderate relationship observed between active and passive stiffness emphasizes the dependence of active muscle stiffness on cross-bridge formation, and the relatively smaller contribution from parallel elastic tissues. Additionally, heightened extensibility does not appear to be a predisposing factor for reduced muscle stiffness.  相似文献

Footfall patterns and time sequence of activity are described for white rats conditioned to run freely in an activity wheel (which they drive). Motion is described in terms of soft contact, hard contact, soft contact, and flip phases. Duration of stride decreases and length of stride increases from walk to trot to canter to gallop. Myographic analysis shows that the brachialis has a major tonic function after it fires strongly during the flip phase and during much of the hard contact phase. Animals running at canter or gallop show major asymmetries between forelimb muscles on the first paw and on the lead paw sides.  相似文献

Intramuscular electromyography (EMG) was used to determine and compare the recruitment patterns of the rat soleus (Sol), tibialis anterior (TA), and a deep and a superficial portion of the medial gastrocnemius (MG) during treadmill locomotion at various speeds and inclines and during swimming. Raw EMG signals for 10-20 step or stroke cycles were rectified, averaged, and processed to determine cycle period (EMG onset of one cycle to EMG onset of the next cycle), EMG burst duration, and integrated area of the rectified burst (IEMG). Mean EMG per burst was calculated as IEMG/burst duration. IEMG/min was calculated as IEMG times the number of bursts (cycles) per minute. Cycle period and burst duration of the extensors decreased hyperbolically, while the TA burst duration was unchanged, with increased treadmill speed. With increased treadmill speed, IEMG was decreased in the Sol and unchanged in the MG and TA, whereas IEMG/min decreased in the Sol and increased in the MG and TA. An elevation in treadmill incline resulted in an increase in the activation levels of the MG but not in the Sol or TA. These data indicate that the additional power required at increased speeds and/or inclines of treadmill locomotion is derived from the recruitment of the fast extensors, e.g., the MG. The mean cycle period during swimming was similar to that observed during the fastest treadmill locomotion. Fast-pitch softball has become an increasingly popular sport for female athletes. There has been little research examining the windmill softball pitch in the literature. The purpose of this study was to describe the muscle activation patterns of 3 upper extremity muscles (biceps, triceps, and rhomboids [scapular stabilizers]) and 2 lower extremity muscles (gluteus maximus and medius) during the 5 phases of the windmill softball pitch. Data describing muscle activation were collected on 7 postpubescent softball pitchers (age 17.7 ± 2.6 years; height 169 ± 5.4 cm; mass 69.1 ± 5.4 kg). Surface electromyographic data were collected using a Myopac Jr 10-channel amplifier (RUN Technologies Scientific Systems, Laguna Hills, CA, USA) synchronized with The MotionMonitor? motion capture system (Innovative Sports Training Inc, Chicago IL, USA) and presented as a percent of maximum voluntary isometric contraction. Gluteus maximus activity reached (196.3% maximum voluntary isometric contraction [MVIC]), whereas gluteus medius activity was consistent during the single leg support of phase 3 (101.2% MVIC). Biceps brachii activity was greatest during phase 4 of the pitching motion. Triceps brachii activation was consistently >150% MVIC throughout the entire pitching motion, whereas the scapular stabilizers were most active during phase 2 (170.1% MVIC). The results of this study indicate the extent to which muscles are activated during the windmill softball pitch, and this knowledge can lead to the development of proper preventative and rehabilitative muscle strengthening programs. In addition, clinicians will be able to incorporate strengthening exercises that mimic the timing of maximal muscle activation most used during the windmill pitching phases.  相似文献

Residual force enhancement (RFE) is a term describing the observation that muscle tension during a contraction that includes a stretch and hold remains above that during an isometric contraction at the hold length. RFE has been observed during in vitro and in vivo experiments, but results involving voluntary contractions are mixed, particularly with respect to large muscles. The purpose of this study was to determine if RFE can be observed in large muscles such as knee extensors and flexors at joint configurations corresponding to the ascending and descending limbs of the muscle force-length curve. Two groups of twenty participants (ten males and ten females per group) performed maximum voluntary contractions on a Biodex machine in purely isometric conditions and in isometric conditions immediately following eccentric stretch. Knee extension trials were performed at 40° (short muscles) and 100° (long muscles) flexion from full extension (0°), and knee flexion trials were performed at 70° (short muscles) and 10° (long muscles) flexion. Stretch-isometric trials terminated at these angles following 30° of eccentric motion at 30°/s. Statistically-significant RFE was observed for both tasks at long-muscle joint configurations, but was not observed for either task at short-muscle joint configurations. Passive torque enhancement was also observed following muscle relaxation at long-muscle joint configurations for both tasks, but for only knee flexion at short-muscle joint configurations. These results reinforce for voluntary contractions of large muscles the RFE behavior observed in smaller muscles, and provide further evidence that RFE occurs primarily on the descending limb of the muscle force-length curve.  相似文献

Lower extremity muscle activations during crossover and side step cut tasks are hypothesized to play an important role in controlling knee motion, and therefore, impact the design of knee injury prevention and rehabilitation programs. However, the contribution of lower extremity muscles to frontal and transverse plane moments during cutting tasks is unclear. The purpose of this study was to compare the muscle activation patterns of selected lower extremity muscles (vastus lateralis, medial/lateral hamstrings and medial/lateral gastrocnemius) of subjects performing a stepping down and side step cut, a stepping down and crossover cut and an equivalent straight ahead task. Ground reaction force was used to determine the cut angle, stance time and compare the lower limb loading during each task. Electromyography data during all tasks were normalized to the average activation during the straight ahead tasks to determine relative changes in muscle activation between the straight ahead and different cut styles (crossover and side step). There were no differences in the pattern of muscle activation of the vastus lateralis, or lateral hamstring muscles when comparing the cutting tasks to the equivalent straight ahead task. However, the crossover cut task resulted in significantly higher muscle activation of the medial hamstrings and lateral gastrocnemius muscles relative to both the side step cut and straight ahead tasks. These results suggest the medial/lateral hamstrings and medial/lateral gastrocnemius play a role in transverse and frontal plane control during cut tasks.  相似文献

This study aimed to compare the muscle activities of the lower limb during overground level running (LR) and uphill running (UR) by using a musculoskeletal model. Six male distance runners ran at three running speeds (slow: 3.3 m/s; medium: 4.2 m/s; and high: 5.0 m/s) on a level runway and a slope of 9.1% grade in which force platforms were mounted. A musculoskeletal leg model and optimization were used to estimate the muscle activation and muscle torque from the joint torque of the lower limb calculated by the inverse dynamics approach. At high speed, the activation and muscle torque of the muscle groups surrounding the hip joints, such as the hamstrings and iliopsoas, during the recovery phase were significantly greater during UR than during LR. At all the running speeds, the knee extension torque by the vasti during the support phase was significantly smaller during UR. Further, the hip flexion and knee extension torques by the rectus femoris during UR were significantly greater than those during LR at all the speeds; this would play a role in compensating for the decrease in the knee extension torque by the vasti and in maintaining the trunk in a forward-leaning position. These results revealed that the activation and muscle torque of the hip extensors and flexors were augmented during UR at the high speed.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate knee muscle activity patterns in experienced Tai-Chi (TC) practitioners during normal walking and TC stepping. The electromyographic (EMG) activity of vastus lateralis (VL), vastus medialis (VM), bicep femoris (BF), and gastrocnemius (GS) muscles of 11 subjects (five females and six males) during the stance phase of normal walking was compared to stance phase of a TC step. Knee joint motion was also monitored by using an Optotrak motion analysis system. Raw EMG was processed by root-mean-square (RMS) technique using a time constant of 50 ms, and normalized to maximum of voluntary contraction for each muscle, referred to as normalized RMS (nRMS). Peak nRMS and co-contraction (quantified by co-contraction index) during stance phase of a gait cycle and a TC step were calculated. Paired t-tests were used to compare the difference for each muscle group peak and co-contraction pair between the tasks. The results showed that only peak values of nRMS in quadriceps and co-contraction were significantly greater in TC stepping compared to normal walking (Peak values of nRMS for VL were 26.93% for normal walking and 52.14% for TC step, p=0.001; VM are 29.12% for normal walking and 51.93% for TC stepping, p=0.028). Mean co-contraction index for VL-BF muscle pairs was 13.24+/-11.02% during TC stepping and 9.47+/-7.77% in stance phase of normal walking (p=0.023). There was no significant difference in peak values of nRMS in the other two muscles during TC stepping compared to normal walking. Preliminary EMG profiles in this study demonstrated that experienced TC practitioners used relatively higher levels of knee muscle activation patterns with greater co-contraction during TC exercise compared to normal walking.  相似文献

The purposes of this study were to compare the elasticity of tendon and aponeurosis in human knee extensors and ankle plantar flexors in vivo and to examine whether the maximal strain of tendon was correlated to that of aponeurosis. The elongation of tendon and aponeurosis during isometric knee extension (n = 23) and ankle plantar flexion (n = 22), respectively, were determined using a real-time ultrasonic apparatus, while the participants performed ramp isometric contractions up to voluntary maximum. To calculate the strain values from the measured elongation, we measured the respective length of tendon and aponeurosis. For the knee extensors, the maximal strain of aponeurosis (12.1 +/- 2.8 %) was significantly greater than that of the patella tendon (8.3 +/- 2.4 %), p < 0.001. On the contrary, the maximal strain of Achilles tendon (5.9 +/- 1.4 %) was significantly greater than that of aponeurosis in ankle plantar flexors (2.7 +/- 1.4 %), p < 0.001. Furthermore, for both knee extensors and ankle plantar flexors there was no significant correlation between maximal strain of tendon and aponeurosis. These results would be important for understanding the different roles of tendon and aponeurosis during human movements and for more accurate muscle modeling.  相似文献

To evaluate the characteristics of stereo-typed movement of the lower limb during treadmill walking, the step length and duration of 200 steps were monitored consecutively and calculated by means of a computerized system, consisting of a position sensor, shoes with foot switches and a minicomputer. Eleven male and 10 female subjects walked at various constant speeds ranging from 60-130 m.min-1. Mean, standard deviation (SD) and coefficient of variation (CV) of the time-distance component at each speed were utilized for the assessment of stereotyped movement. When compared with males, females had a tendency to increase their speed by increasing their cadence. The difference of the walking pattern was specifically related to their height. The SD and CV of the time-distance component at a given speed were significantly greater in females than in males. Regression analyses revealed that in the relationship between the walking speeds and the SDs or CVs of the time-distance component, the significant quadratic equations could be fitted. The speed, at which the SD of step length was minimum, was estimated to be about 90 m.min-1 in both males and females. This was regarded as the free walking speed or as the walking speed resulting from a mechanically efficient step length which suited the subject's body size.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in electromyographic activity of agonist and antagonist knee musculature between a maximal and a submaximal isokinetic fatigue protocol. Fourteen healthy males (age: 24.3 ± 2.5 years) performed 25 maximal (MIFP) and 60 submaximal (SIFP) isokinetic concentric efforts of the knee extensors at 60° s−1, across a 90° range of motion. The two protocols were performed a week apart. The EMG activity of vastus medialis (VM), vastus lateralis (VL) and biceps femoris (BF) were recorded using surface electrodes. The peak torque (PT) and average EMG (aEMG) were expressed as percentages of pre-fatigue maximal value. One-way analysis of variance indicated a significant (p < 0.05) decline of PT during the maximal (45.7%) and submaximal (46.8%) protocols. During the maximal test, the VM and VL aEMG initially increased and then decreased. In contrast, VM and VL aEMG continuously increased during submaximal testing (p < 0.05). The antagonist (BF) aEMG remained constant during maximal test but it increased significantly and then declined during the submaximal testing. The above results indicate that agonist and antagonist activity depends on the intensity of the selected isokinetic fatigue test.  相似文献

We evaluated subcortical and cortical somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in response to posterior tibial nerve stimulation in 4 experimental conditions of foot movement and compared them with the baseline condition of full relaxation. The experimental conditions were: (a) active flexion-extension of the stimulated foot; (b) active flexion-extension of the non-stimulated foot; (c) passive flexion-extension of the stimulated foot in complete relaxation; (d) tonic active flexion of the stimulated foot. We analyzed latencies and amplitudes of the subcortical P30 potential, of the contralateral pre-rolandic N37 and P50 responses and of the P37, N50 and P60 potentials recorded over the vertex. Latencies did not vary in any of the paradigms. The amplitude of subcortical P30 potential did not change during any of the paradigms. Among the cortical waves, P37, N50 and P60 amplitudes were significantly attenuated in all conditions except active movement of the non-stimulated foot (b). This attenuation was less during passive (c) than during active movements of the stimulated foot (a and d). The contralateral pre-rolandic waves N37 and P50 showed no significant decrease during any of the paradigms. These results suggest that gating occurs rostrally to the cervico-medullary junction, probably at cortical level. The different behavior of N37, P50 and P37, N50 cortical responses during movement of the stimulated foot provides evidence suggestive of a highly localized gating process occurring at cortical level. These potentials could reflect activation of separate, functionally distinct generators.  相似文献

Background

Foot center of pressure (COP) manipulation has been associated with improved gait patterns. The purpose of this study was to determine lower limb muscle activation changes in knee osteoarthritis patients, both immediately after COP manipulation and when COP manipulation was combined with continuous gait therapy (AposTherapy).

Methods

Fourteen females with medial compartment knee osteoarthritis underwent EMG analyzes of key muscles of the leg. In the initial stage, trials were carried out at four COP positions. Following this, gait therapy was initiated for 3 months. The barefoot EMG was compared before and after therapy.

Results

The average EMG varied significantly with COP in at least one phase of stance in all examined muscles of the less symptomatic leg and in three muscles of the more symptomatic leg. After training, a significant increase in average EMG was observed in most muscles. Most muscles of the less symptomatic leg showed significantly increased peak EMG. Activity duration was shorter for all muscles of the less symptomatic leg (significant in the lateral gastrocnemius) and three muscles of the more symptomatic leg (significant in the biceps femoris). These results were associated with reduced pain, increased function and improved spatiotemporal parameters.

Conclusions

COP manipulation influences the muscle activation patterns of the leg in patients with knee osteoarthritis. When combined with a therapy program, muscle activity increases and activity duration decreases.  相似文献

Although it has been reported that strengthening exercise in stroke patients is beneficial for their motor recovery, there is little evidence about which exercise method is the better option. The purpose of this study was to compare isotonic and isokinetic exercise by surface electromyography (EMG) analysis using standardized methods.Nine stroke patients performed three sets of isotonic elbow extensions at 30% of their maximal voluntary isometric torque followed by three sets of maximal isokinetic elbow extensions with standardization of mean angular velocity and the total amount of work for each matched set in two strengthening modes. All exercises were done by using 1-DoF planner robot to regulate exact resistive torque and speed. Surface electromyographic activity of eight muscles in the hemiplegic shoulder and elbow was recorded. Normalized root mean square (RMS) values and co-contraction index (CCI) were used for the analysis.The isokinetic mode was shown to activate the agonists of elbow extension more efficiently than the isotonic mode (normalized RMS for pooled triceps: 96.0 ± 17.0 (2nd), 87.8 ± 14.4 (3rd) in isokinetic, 80.9 ± 11.0 (2nd), 81.6 ± 12.4 (3rd) in isotonic contraction, F[1, 8] = 11.168; P = 0.010) without increasing the co-contraction of muscle pairs, implicating spasticity or synergy.  相似文献

Studies have shown an increased muscle activation at the opposite passive side during unilateral contractions. The purpose of the present study was to examine the influence of pain on muscle activation in the passive shoulder during unilateral shoulder abduction. Ten patients with unilateral rotator tendinosis of the shoulder and nine healthy controls performed unilateral maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and sustained submaximal contractions with and without subacromial injections of local anaesthetics of the afflicted shoulder. Muscle activation was recorded by electromyography (EMG) from the trapezius, deltoid, infraspinatus and supraspinatus muscles in both shoulders. During MVCs, the EMG amplitude from muscles of the passive afflicted side was not different in patients and controls, and was not influenced by pain alterations. In contrast, the EMG amplitude from the muscles of the passive unafflicted side was lower in the patients and increased after pain reduction. During the sustained submaximal contraction the EMG amplitude increased gradually in the passive shoulder to 15-30% of the EMG amplitude observed during MVC. This response was not influenced by differences in pain. We conclude that muscle activation of the passive shoulder was closely related to the activation of the contracting muscles and thus related to central motor drive, and not directly influenced by changes in pain.  相似文献

The purposes of this study were to test whether an examiner's strength may affect the validity of the knee muscle strength measurements using a hand-held dynamometer (HHD) and whether enhancing the forces applied by an examiner using a resistance-enhanced dynamometer (RED) would improve measurement validity. Twenty-five young male volunteers (mean [±SD] age: 22.5 ± 1.7 years) without a history of injury to the test limb and 6 male and 6 female experienced examiners participated in this study. Maximum resisting forces of the knee flexors and extensors were measured using RED, HHD, and a dynamometer (Kin-Com). For all testing conditions, poor to moderate associations were found between the HHD and Kin-Com, whereas there was a good to excellent relationship between RED and Kin-Com. The systematic variations between RED and Kin-Com were also smaller than those between HHD and Kin-Com. The force values measured by RED were very close to those measured by Kin-Com. An examiner's strength affects the validity of the measurements using HHD. Enhancing the forces applied by the examiner to the tested segment using RED appeared to improve the validity of muscle strength measurements.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of the reach distance on the muscle activation during a reach-to-grasp movement in the sitting position. Ten healthy male volunteers were tested. Surface EMG were recorded for the deltoid scapular, the deltoid clavicular, the triceps brachii, the biceps brachii and the brachoradialis. These muscles have been selected for their contribution to the cylindrical palmar prehension motion in the sagittal plane.Three distances have been tested: 20, 30 and 40 cm. For each distance, ten repeated measures have been recorded. From this in vivo data, the repeatability of the protocol has been tested. For this, relative (ICC) and absolute (SEM) reliabilities are determined in order to evaluate the intra operator repeatability of this protocol. It appears that the ICC values obtained are between 0.78 and 0.99 in all the conditions (15 conditions corresponding to three distances and five muscles). The intra operator repeatability is thus confirmed. From these surface EMG recordings the muscle activations have been calculated as the iEMG value. It appears that the muscle activation is greater with increased distances.The results contribute to the identification of the levels of muscle activation amplitude during a simple reach-to-grasp movement that is common in prehension research. This knowledge is essential in order to calculate the muscle forces and to integrate these forces in the prehension models developed nowadays in the robotic, rehabilitation, ergonomics field of research.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated a motor strategy for increasing the amplitude of movement in rapid extensions at the elbow joint. This study focused on the changes in a triphasic electromyographic (EMG) pattern, i.e., the first agonist burst (AG1), the second agonist burst (AG2) and the antagonist burst (ANT), for increasing the amplitude of movement required after the initiation of movement. Subjects performed 40° (Basic task) and 80° of extension (Wide task). These tasks were performed under two conditions; performing a predetermined task (SF condition) and performing a task in response to a visual stimulus immediately after movement commencement (ST condition). Kinematic parameters and EMG activity from the agonist (triceps brachii) and the antagonist (biceps brachii) muscles were recorded. As a result, the onset latency of AG1 and AG2 and the duration of AG1 were longer under the ST condition than the SF condition. No difference was observed between the SF and ST condition with respect to ANT activity. It is concluded that the motor strategy for increasing the amplitude of movement after the initiation of movement was to control the movement velocity and the timing to stop movement by the coactivation duration of AG1 and ANT and to stop the desired position accurately by AG2 activity.  相似文献
