Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by chronic, destructive, debilitating arthritis. Its etiology is unknown; it is presumed that environmental factors trigger development in the genetically predisposed. Epstein-Barr virus, a nearly ubiquitous virus in the human population, has generated great interest as a potential trigger. This virus stimulates polyclonal lymphocyte expansion and persists within B lymphocytes for the host's life, inhibited from reactivating by the immune response. In latent and replicating forms, it has immunomodulating actions that could play a role in the development of this autoimmune disease. The evidence linking Epstein-Barr virus and rheumatoid arthritis is reviewed.  相似文献

Theoretical models identify maternal behavior as critical for the maintenance and evolution of sex ratios in organisms with environmental sex determination (ESD). Maternal choice of nest site is generally thought to respond more rapidly to sex ratio selection than environmental sensitivity of offspring sex (threshold temperatures) in reptiles with temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD, a form of ESD). However, knowledge of the evolutionary potential for either of these traits in a field setting is limited. I developed a simulation model using local climate data and observed levels of phenotypic variation for nest-site choice and threshold temperatures in painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) with TSD. Both nest-site choice and threshold temperatures, and hence sex ratios, evolved slowly to simulated climate change scenarios. In contrast to expectations from previous models, nest-site choice evolved more slowly than threshold temperatures because of large climatic effects on nest temperatures and indirect selection on maternally expressed traits. A variant of the model, assuming inheritance of nest-site choice through natal imprinting, demonstrated that natal imprinting inhibited adaptive responses in female nest-site choice to climate change. These results predict that females have relatively low potential to adaptively adjust sex ratios through nest-site choice.  相似文献

Here we explore the relationship between female genital cutting (FGC), sexual behaviour, and marriage opportunities in five West African countries. Using large demographic datasets (n 72,438 women, 12,704 men, 10,695 couples) we explore key (but untested) assumptions of an evolutionary proposal that FGC persists because it provides evolutionary fitness benefits for men by reducing non-paternity rates. We identify and test three assumptions implicit in this proposal. We test whether cut women have reduced extra-pair sex before or within marriage; whether FGC is associated with a younger age at marriage as an indication of partner preference; and whether individual and group-level indicators of paternity concern are associated with a stronger preference for marriage to women with FGC.Our results show that FGC status does not affect the odds of women engaging in several indicators of premarital sex, however women with FGC have significantly lower odds of having more than one lifetime sexual partner. We also show that women with FGC get married at a younger age which supports the argument that FGC status influences women's marriage opportunities, even when it does not restrict sexual activity. Finally, we find that in population groups where reported sexual activity and perceived risk of women's extra-pair sex is high, men have higher odds of marrying a first wife with FGC. Together, these results indicate that paternity certainty may be one of several factors contributing to the persistence of FGC in this sample, and that group-level sexual norms are key to maintaining the practice of FGC through the marriage market.  相似文献

During a 6-year period, we isolated three Abiotrophia defectiva, six Granulicatella adiacens and two G. 'para-adiacens' strains from clinical specimens. All A. defectiva strains were isolated from immunocompetent patients with endovascular infections, whereas the Granulicatella spp. strains were isolated from immunosuppressed patients with primary bacteremia. As the capacity of bacteria to adhere to the host extracellular matrix (ECM) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of endovascular infection, we investigated the ability of A. defectiva and Granulicatella spp. isolates to bind different ECM components immobilized in microtiter plates. Adherence tests showed a strong attachment of A. defectiva strains to fibronectin, whereas Granulicatella spp. strains were not adherent. The poor adherence of Granulicatella spp. strains to the ECM could be correlated with a lower propensity to induce endocarditis.  相似文献

Background: The aetiology of meningiomas is largely unknown although hormones have been suggested to play a role. Methods: A cohort study was performed to evaluate hormone-related factors associated with meningioma. Patients (12–89 years) with a first diagnosis of meningioma (January 1996–June 2008) were identified from The Health Improvement Network UK primary care database and age- and sex-matched to controls (n = 10 000) from the same cohort. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated following a nested case control analysis using unconditional logistic regression. Results: In total, 745 patients with meningioma were identified from a study population of 2 171 287. No significantly increased risk of meningioma was found among female users of oral contraceptives (OR: 1.15; CI: 0.67–1.98), hormone replacement therapy (OR: 0.99; CI: 0.73–1.35) or low-dose cyproterone acetate (CPA; OR: 1.51; CI: 0.33–6.86) compared with non-users. There was a significantly increased risk of meningioma among male users of androgen analogues (OR: 19.09; CI: 2.81–129.74) and among users of high-dose CPA (OR: 6.30; CI: 1.37–28.94) compared with non-users, however there were only three cases currently using these drugs. No significant association was found between meningioma and prostate, breast, or genital cancers. Conclusions: Our results do not support a role for exogenous hormone use by females in meningioma development. The risk in males was only observed with high-dose, short-term (<1 year) therapy. Impact: While hormonal cancers and therapies are not associated with meningioma in females, the risk in males requires further investigation.  相似文献

Growth and survivorship of individually reared offspring of the woodlice (Isopoda Oniscidae) Porcellionides pruinosus (Brandt) and Aphiloscia vilis (Budde-Lund) were measured under laboratory conditions These measures of offspring fitness were compared to birth mass, which is a realistic measure of parental investment in offspring for these species, to test a key assumption of life history theory that an increase in resource allocation to offspring will increase offspring fitness In both species birth mass had no significant effect on survivorship to 60 days and in P pruinosus birth mass did not correlate with mass at 15, 30 or 45 days after birth In A vilis larger young at birth had a slight growth advantage to 15 days but not thereafter There appears to be little effect of birth mass on offspring fitness despite a considerable range in birth mass within broods In these species high variance in juvenile growth may spread subsequent reproductive effort and avoid risks of total reproductive failure  相似文献

The aim of this study is to assess anthropometric changes and menstrual cycle characteristics during the maturation process of an adolescent female sample in Madrid, Spain. The new demographic context of Madrid, with a 33.9% of girls coming from Central and South America, makes this study relevant in terms of new epidemiological situations that could possible develop. The sample consists of 284 girls, ages 9 to 16 years, measured and interviewed in four school centres of Madrid. Results show that menarche is slightly earlier in the Spanish girls, but there are no other important differences regarding the characteristics of their menses. However, the Spanish girls have a significantly higher intake of menarcheal pain related drugs. The anthropometric changes accompanying menarche are greater in the immigrants, especially in terms of trunk fatness, leading to an "overweight" characterisation of this sub-sample. These maturational profiles show the need for educational programs, especially focussed on the foreign adolescent population, to cope with health risks related to overweight.  相似文献

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is an atherosclerotic disturbance characterized by a progressive obstruction of lower limb arteries. Many risk factors associated with PAD development have being reported in the literature. The present study aimed to investigate whether mutations in the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) or in the cystathionine beta synthase (CBS) genes are associated with higher levels of homocysteine and the risk of PAD in patients from Brazil. This study analyzed 39 patients with PAD and 32 without PAD in whom risk factors and C677T mutations in the MTHFR gene and both 844ins68 and T833C mutations in the CBS gene were investigated. Although higher levels of homocysteine could be observed in patients with PAD compared to controls, no association between the increase of homocysteine and the frequency of C677T, 844ins68, and T833C mutations could be observed. The results suggest that these mutations do not appear to be related to either homocysteine levels or the development of the disease. However, hyperhomocysteinemia and smoking are important factors in PAD development.  相似文献

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a lethal autosomal recessive genetic disease caused by mutations in the CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). Mutations in the CFTR gene may result in a defective protein processing that leads to changes in function and regulation of this chloride channel. Despite of the expression of CFTR in the kidney, patients with CF do not present major renal dysfunction, but it is known that both the urinary excretion of proteins and renal capacity to concentrate and dilute urine are altered in these patients. CFTR mRNA is expressed in all nephron segments of rat and human, and this abundance is more prominent in renal cortex and outer medulla renal areas. CFTR protein was detected in apical surface of both proximal and distal tubules of rat kidney but not in the outer medullary collecting ducts. Studies have demonstrated that CFTR does not only transport Cl but also ATP. ATP transport by CFTR could be involved in the control of other ion transporters such as Na+ (ENaC) and K+ (renal outer medullary potassium) channels, especially in TAL and CCD. In the kidney, CFTR also might be involved in the endocytosis of low-molecular-weight proteins by proximal tubules. This review is focused on the CFTR function and structure, its role in the renal physiology, and its modulation by hormones involved in the control of extracellular fluid volume.  相似文献

Plant morphogenesis has some interesting features that may have consequences for the regulation of cell division. In particular, the immobility of plant cells implies the necessity for highly accurate controls, in contrast with the flexibility of many developmental processes in animals. An important question in plant development concerns the status of the relationship between plant morphogenesis and cell division. In this review, we discuss the current knowledge of the molecular mechanisms controlling the plant cell cycle and how this could be differentially regulated during plant morphogenesis. The plant genes involved are homologous to those of other higher eukaryotes, suggesting a similar cell cycle machinery. A variety of mechanisms control these genes, reflecting the complexity of internal and environmental signals to which plants should respond. This intricate network requires an upstream control mechanism to function as a failsafe system and to govern cell division and growth to produce the correct plant shape. The acquisition of cellular immortality is a critical step in the tumorigenic process that requires stabilization of the telomeres, nucleoprotein structures at the termini of chromosomes. While the majority of human tumors stabilize their telomeres through activation of telomerase (hTERT), a significant portion (10-15%) utilize a poorly understood alternative mechanism of telomere maintenance referred to as ALT (Alternative Lengthening of Telomeres). Strikingly, the ALT mechanism is more prevalent in tumors arising from tissues of mesenchymal origin than in those of epithelial origin. This observation suggests that cell type specific mechanisms favor the activation of the ALT mechanism versus telomerase in human tumorigenesis. In addition, the presence of an alternative mechanism of telomere maintenance raises the possibility that telomerase-positive tumors undergoing anti-telomerase therapies might escape by activating the ALT pathway. For these reasons, delineating the ALT mechanism is critical for our understanding of the tumorigenic process and the development of ALT-specific anti-neoplastic therapies. Recent studies have demonstrated that epigenetic modifications at telomeres have a profound effect on telomere length, and may also be linked to the ALT mechanism. In this review we focus on these recent advances and their implications in telomere maintenance.  相似文献

The concept that ostensibly tissue-specific stem cells can give rise to cells of heterologous lineages has gained support from studies using purified hematopoietic stem cells and sensitive donor-cell tracking methods. The ability to exploit these findings in clinical settings will probably depend on new insights into the mechanisms by which such stem cells or their progeny migrate to sites of organ damage and differentiate to cell types competent to participate in tissue regeneration.  相似文献

Amphibian species are declining at an alarming rate on a global scale in large part owing to an infectious disease caused by the chytridiomycete fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis. This disease of amphibians has recently emerged within Europe, but knowledge of its effects on amphibian assemblages remains poor. Importantly, little is known about the environmental envelope that is associated with chytridiomycosis in Europe and the potential for climate change to drive future disease dynamics. Here, we use long-term observations on amphibian population dynamics in the Pe?alara Natural Park, Spain, to investigate the link between climate change and chytridiomycosis. Our analysis shows a significant association between change in local climatic variables and the occurrence of chytridiomycosis within this region. Specifically, we show that rising temperature is linked to the occurrence of chytrid-related disease, consistent with the chytrid-thermal-optimum hypothesis. We show that these local variables are driven by general circulation patterns, principally the North Atlantic Oscillation. Given that B. dendrobatidis is known to be broadly distributed across Europe, there is now an urgent need to assess the generality of our finding and determine whether climate-driven epidemics may be expected to impact on amphibian species across the wider region.  相似文献
