Species with extremely female-biased sex ratios are expected to show alteration in the normal sex roles, as a response to male scarcity. The tropical butterfly Acraea encedon is known to be infected with a male-killing bacterium of the genus Wolbachia, which has led to severe sex ratio distortion in some populations where more than 95 % of wild females are infected with the male-killer. Thus, the aggregation of female A. encedon at resource-free landmarks has been interpreted as “female lekking” behaviour, a sex role-reversed form of lekking normally seen in males of many animals. For this paper, sites in Uganda where female-leks have previously been reported (in 1998) were revisited and surveyed for both sex ratio and bacterial prevalence, for 3 years (2005–2007). The hypothesis of sex role-reversal in A. encedon was evaluated in light of the field data obtained. The study concluded that the response of host populations to the gradual spread of the male-killer toward fixation occurs initially at the behavioural level, as sex role-reversal, and finally at the demographic level, by succumbing to extinction.  相似文献

Populations of the Heike firefly, Luciola lateralis, a representative species of Japan’s traditional agricultural landscape (known as satoyama), have recently experienced rapid declines in many areas of Japan. Owing to the popularity of this firefly, many local communities have increased conservation efforts through the restoration of aquatic habitat complexes in satoyama. To provide fundamental parameters to predict population dynamics of the firefly, we conducted a mark–recapture study in restored paddy fields, and we estimated adult population parameters such as population size, survival, recruitment, sex ratio, and body size. We found that capture probability generally decreased as the season advanced, probably because of seasonal changes in detectability and/or firefly behavior. The daily survival rate of adults decreased over the season and may be related to a seasonal decline in adult body size. Adult population exhibited a highly male-biased sex ratio. Firefly abundance in the restored paddy fields doubled during the 4-year study period. Our analysis showed that adult detectability, recruitment, and survival rate are seasonally variable and could affect population size estimates obtained by a simple flash census. The mark–recapture technique can provide precise estimates of adult L. lateralis population characteristics and, thus, is a valuable method for predicting firefly populations and assessing the success of the restoration program.  相似文献

Melittobia australica (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) is a gregariousectoparasitoid of the prepupae and pupae of solitary wasps andbees. The males never disperse from their natal patch, and matingtakes place only on the host from which they emerged. We measuredthe offspring sex ratio of M. australica with differing foundressnumbers and examined combat between emerged males. The offspringsex ratios were extremely female biased and almost independentof foundress number in all cases. The population of M. australicaused in the experiment was infected with the cytoplasmicallyinherited symbiotic bacterium Wolbachia. However, although Wolbachiais a potential sex-ratio distorter, noninfected individualsshowed the same sex ratio patterns as the Wolbachia-infectedindividuals. An arena experiment showed that younger males werealmost always killed by older males that had eclosed earlier.These results suggested that lethal male–male combat isan additional factor distorting the sex ratio toward a morefemale-biased sex ratio. The influence of endosymbiotic bacterium Wolbachia on the recombination processes in the sex chromosome of Drosophila melanogaster on the region between white and cut genes has been studied. The analysis of the crossing-over frequency in various variants of strain crossing, infected and noninfected, with bacteria has been carried out. The results have shown the absence of the influence of infection with Wolbachia on the frequency of crossing-over in the studied region of the X chromosome of D. melanogaster.  相似文献

Parthenogenesis-inducing (PI) Wolbachia belong to a class of intracellular symbionts that distort the offspring sex ratio of their hosts toward a female bias. In many PI Wolbachia-infected species sex ratio distortion has reached its ultimate expression-fixation of infection and all-female populations. This is only possible with thelytokous PI symbionts as they provide an alternative form of reproduction and remove the requirement for males and sexual reproduction. Many populations fixed for PI Wolbachia infection have lost the ability to reproduce sexually, even when cured of the infection. We examine one such population in the species Trichogramma pretiosum. Through a series of backcrossing experiments with an uninfected Trichogramma pretiosum population we were able to show that the genetic basis for the loss of female sexual function could be explained by a dominant nuclear effect. Male sexual function had not been completely lost, though some deterioration of male sexual function was also evident when males from the infected population (created through antibiotic curing of infected females) were mated to uninfected females. We discuss the dynamics of sex ratio selection in PI Wolbachia-infected populations and the evolution of non-fertilizing mutations.  相似文献

Background

At the turn of the 19th century the first observations of a female-biased sex ratio in broods and populations of the head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis, had been reported. A study by Buxton in 1940 on the sex ratio of lice on prisoners in Ceylon is still today the subject of reanalyses. This sex ratio distortion had been detected in ten different countries. In the last sixty years no new data have been collected, especially on scalp infestations under economically and socially more developed conditions.

Results

Here we report a female bias of head lice in a survey of 480 school children in Argentina. This bias is independent of the intensity of the pediculosis, which makes local mate competition highly unlikely as the source of the aberrant sex ratio; however, other possible adaptive mechanisms cannot be discounted. These lice as well as lice from pupils in Britain were carrying several strains of the endosymbiotic bacterium Wolbachia pipientis, one of the most wide spread intracellular sex ratio distorters. Similar Wolbachia strains are also present in the pig louse, Haematopinus suis, suggesting that this endosymbiont might have a marked influence on the biology of the whole order. The presence of a related obligate nutritional bacterium in lice prevents the investigation of a causal link between sex ratio and endosymbionts.

Conclusions

Regardless of its origin, this sex ratio distortion in head lice that has been reported world wide, is stable over time and is a remarkable deviation from the stability of frequency-dependent selection of Fisher's sex ratio. A female bias first reported in 1898 is still present over a hundred years and a thousand generations later.

Baculoviral expression systems, including those of Autographa californica multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus (BmNPV), are used for recombinant protein production. Four B. mori-derived (BmN4, Bm5, Bmc140, and Bme21) cell lines were infected with recombinant BmNPV viruses expressing firefly luciferase or EGFP as reporters under the control of a viral polyhedrin promoter. Bme21 exhibited significantly higher (100-fold) luciferase activity than BmN4 and Bm5. With the EGFP reporter protein, Bme21 cells showed a marked increase in the ratio of EGFP-positive cells, reaching 90?% on day 4 post-infection, while Bm5 and BmN4 cells had a slow increase in the ratio of their EGFP-positive population. The viral titer in a supernatant of Bme21 cell culture increased faster than those of Bm5 and BmN4 cells. This susceptibility indicates that the Bme21 cell line is useful for large-scale protein expression using BmNPV.  相似文献

In experimentally infected insects, the sex ratio of first generation nematodes of five species of Steinernema was female-biased (male proportion 0.35-0.47). There was a similar female bias when the worms developed in vitro (0.37-0.44), indicating that the bias in these species is not due to a lower rate of infection by male infective juveniles (IJs). Experimental conditions influenced the proportion of males establishing in insects, indicating that male and female IJs differ in their behaviour. However, there was no evidence that males are the colonising sex in any species, contrary to what has previously been proposed. Time of emergence from the host in which the nematodes had developed influenced sex ratios in experimental infections. In three species (Steinernema longicaudum, Steinernema glaseri and Steinernema kraussei), early emerged nematodes had a higher proportion of males than those that emerged later, with the reverse trend for Steinernema carpocapsae and Steinernema feltiae. In a more detailed in vitro study of S. longicaudum, the proportion of males was similar whether or not the nematodes passed through the developmentally arrested IJ stage, indicating that the female bias is not due to failure of males to exit this stage. The sex ratio in vitro was independent of survival rate from juvenile to adult, and was female-biased even when all juveniles developed, indicating that the bias is not explained by failure of males to develop to adults. The female-biased sex ratio characteristic of Steinernema populations appears to be present from at least the early juvenile stage. We hypothesise that the observed female bias is the population optimal sex ratio, a response to cycles of local mate competition experienced by nematodes reproducing within insect hosts interspersed with periods of outbreeding with less closely related worms following dispersal.  相似文献

The genetic composition and sex ratio in the Stockholm populations of Adalia bipunctata have been studied. The overall frequency of melanics is 3.2%, which is significantly lower than in the populations of St. Petersburg and other large cities along the Baltic Sea. The secondary sex ratio in the Stockholm populations is female-biased 82:18. More than half of A. bipunctata females are infected with the male-killing Spiroplasma bacterium. Beetles of the co-existing species Adalia decempunctata are infected with a different bacterium belonging to the genus Rickettsia.  相似文献

First, second, third, early and late fourth-instar larvae, and pupae of Aedes aegypti were infected with Romanomerrais culicivorax and reared at 20, 25, and 30 C. An increase in the ratio of male to female nematodes was observed with increase in host age at the time of infection at each temperature. The number of pupal and late fourth-instar infections was low, but R. culicivorax continued to develop in adult A. aegypti. Since male nematodes were recovered from both male and female hosts infected as late fourth instars or pupae, the sex of the host did not influence the sex of the nematode.  相似文献

To determine biologically important effects of the cytoplasmic endosymbiont Wolbachia, two substrains of the same Drosophila melanogaster strain have been studied, one of them infected with Wolbachia and the other treated with tetracycline to eliminate the bacterium. Females of D. melanogaster infected with Wolbachia are more resistant to the fungus Blauveria bassiana (an insect pathogen) than uninfected females; infected females also exhibited changes in oviposition substrate preference. Males infected with the bacterium are more competitive than uninfected males. The possible role of Wolbachia in the formation of alternative ecological strategies of D. melanogaster is discussed.  相似文献

The microsporidium Pleistophora crangoni n. sp. is a common parasite of Crangon franciscorum, C. nigricauda, and C. stylirostris in the vicinity of Yaquina Bay, Oregon. Characteristics of the parasite are described. Skeletal muscle was the only host tissue infected. The seasonal prevalence and intensity of the parasite in crangonids are described, based on examination of 1556 C. franciscorum, 3877 C. nigricauda, and 1674 C. stylirostris collected at monthly intervals from June 1975 through June 1976. Prevalence in C. franciscorum and C. stylirostris increased through the autumn and reached winter peaks of 30.3 and 41.0%, respectively, then decreased in the spring. Prevalence in C. nigricauda remained below 8% through the year. Intensity increased with size of the shrimps in the three species. Infection experiments and field observations suggest that only very young shrimps are susceptible to infection during a relatively short period during the summer months. Following natural infection, the parasite spreads within the host, indicating repeated schizogonic cycles. Parasitic castration was indicated by the absence of gravid infected female shrimps and was confirmed by histological examination. Ovaries of infected shrimps did not develop beyond a very early stage. A shift in sex ratio toward females in infected shrimps indicates that the parasite may influence sex determination. Shrimps showed little cellular response to infection. Only rarely in heavily infected shrimps was encapsulation of parasite cysts observed; necrotic tissue was occasionally observed. Infected shrimps usually succumbed before uninfected shrimps when subjected to oxygen stress. The collection of infected shrimps that were unusually large may indicate that these individuals grew faster or lived longer than uninfected shrimps.  相似文献

Whipple’s disease is a systemic disorder in which a gram-positive rod-shaped bacterium is constantly present in infected tissues. After numerous unsuccessful attempts to culture this bacterium, it was eventually characterized by 16S rRNA gene analysis to be a member of the actinomycetes. The name Tropheryma whippelii was proposed. Until now, the bacterium has only been found in infected human tissues, but there is no evidence for human-to-human transmission. Here we report the detection of DNA specific for the Whipple’s disease bacterium in 25 of 38 wastewater samples from five different sewage treatment plants in the area of Heidelberg, Germany. These findings provide the first evidence that T. whippelii occurs in the environment, within a polymicrobial community. This is in accordance with the phylogenetic relationship of this bacterium as well as with known epidemiological aspects of Whipple’s disease. Our data argue for an environmental source for infection with the Whipple’s disease bacterium.  相似文献

In some populations of the butterflies Acraea encedon and A. encedana, most females are infected with a bacterium that kills their sons. The resulting shortage of males is associated with females adopting a sex‐role‐reversed mating system, in which females swarm at landmarks such as hilltops and compete for males. We have observed the mating behaviour of Acraea species that are not known to be infected with the male‐killer. In over half of these species, males were found to aggregate on hilltops. It is likely that this behaviour was ancestral to the sex‐role‐reversed swarms of Acraea encedon and A. encedana, and we discuss how the spread of the male‐killing infection may have converted this mating system into sex‐role‐reversed swarming.  相似文献

The ratio of male to female Reesimermis nielseni Tsai and Grundmann, a nematode parasite of mosquito larvae, increased as the number of parasites per host increased. Hosts with a single nematode produced 9% males compared with essentially 100% males in hosts with more than 7 parasites; hosts with 3 nematodes produced about equal numbers of males and females. Males of R. nielseni generally emerged before females because of the earlier death of multiple-infected mosquitoes. The species of the host mosquito influenced the sex ratio, but the size of a specific host at the time of invasion did not. Host diet also had a noticeable influence on the sex ratio of the nematode: singly infected hosts from a starved population produced 92% males compared with 13% in the normally fed group. The importance of these factors in the mass rearing of R. nielseni is discussed.  相似文献

Nucleocytoplasmic genetic conflicts arise as a result of asymmetric transmission of cytoplasmic and nuclear genes. Spread of a cytoplasmic element promoting female-biased sex ratios creates selection on nuclear genes for mechanisms that decrease the bias. Here we investigate the conflict over sex ratio between the cytoplasmic bacterium Wolbachia and the two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch. We show that, first, infected females produce significantly more female-biased sex ratios than uninfected (cured) females. Second, this effect is not due to parthenogenesis, male killing, or feminization, phenotypes commonly associated with infection by Wolbachia. Third, sex ratio is a trait with a heritable component in this species; thus, it can evolve under selection. Fourth, the sex ratio produced by uninfected (cured) females changes over time, approaching the sex ratio produced by females from the infected culture. On the basis of these results, we suggest that after sex ratio manipulation by Wolbachia, a host compensatory mechanism evolved that allows infected females to produce the sex ratio favored by nuclear genes. We discuss the evolution of "mutualism" with respect to the evolution of host mechanisms that compensate for effects induced by vertically transmitted "parasites."  相似文献

Background

Bioluminescence in fireflies and click beetles is produced by a luciferase-luciferin reaction. The luminescence property and protein structure of firefly luciferase have been investigated, and its cDNA has been used for various assay systems. The chemical structure of firefly luciferin was identified as the ᴅ-form in 1963 and studies on the biosynthesis of firefly luciferin began early in the 1970’s. Incorporation experiments using 14C-labeled compounds were performed, and cysteine and benzoquinone/hydroquinone were proposed to be biosynthetic component for firefly luciferin. However, there have been no clear conclusions regarding the biosynthetic components of firefly luciferin over 30 years.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Incorporation studies were performed by injecting stable isotope-labeled compounds, including ʟ-[U-13C3]-cysteine, ʟ-[1-13C]-cysteine, ʟ-[3-13C]-cysteine, 1,4-[D6]-hydroquinone, and p-[2,3,5,6-D]-benzoquinone, into the adult lantern of the living Japanese firefly Luciola lateralis. After extracting firefly luciferin from the lantern, the incorporation of stable isotope-labeled compounds into firefly luciferin was identified by LC/ESI-TOF-MS. The positions of the stable isotope atoms in firefly luciferin were determined by the mass fragmentation of firefly luciferin.

Conclusions

We demonstrated for the first time that ᴅ- and ʟ-firefly luciferins are biosynthesized in the lantern of the adult firefly from two ʟ-cysteine molecules with p-benzoquinone/1,4-hydroquinone, accompanied by the decarboxylation of ʟ-cysteine.  相似文献
