In Japan, although greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood), and sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), co-occur on tomato plants under greenhouse conditions, the two whiteflies are distributed differently with regard to leaf position. To elucidate the factors that determine the leaf position of these whiteflies, we investigated traits for leaflets collected from three positions on tomato plants. Furthermore, we examined leaflet selection by and fertility of the two whiteflies under choice and non-choice conditions. In addition, the effect on whitefly behavior of volatile compounds released from leaflets was evaluated by use of a Y-tube olfactometer test. Nitrogen and carbon content were highest for upper leaflets. In choice tests, more T. vaporariorum and B. tabaci adults selected upper and middle leaflets, respectively. Similarly, they oviposited more eggs on upper and middle leaflets. In non-choice tests, T. vaporariorum oviposited more eggs on upper leaflets, but B. tabaci oviposited equally on each leaflet. In Y-tube olfactometer tests, more T. vaporariorum adults moved to upper leaflets whereas more B. tabaci adults moved to middle leaflets. These results suggest that different leaflet selection by adults of these two whiteflies is likely to be associated with the different volatile compounds emitted by tomato leaflets at each position.  相似文献

The predator Tupiocoris cucurbitaceus is frequently found attacking Trialeurodes vaporariorum in greenhouses without pesticide applications in Argentina. The objective of these studies was to evaluate some biological characteristics of this species fed on three types of diet (whitefly nymphs, Sitotroga cerealella eggs and a mix of both) and on two host plants (tomato and tobacco), under controlled experimental conditions. Preimaginal developmental time for female and male bugs was shorter in the presence of whiteflies than with only moth eggs. Females lived longer when they ate only whitefly nymphs compared to a mixed diet or only moth eggs. The amount of adult descendants was greater when bugs could eat whiteflies, regardless of the presence of S. cerealella. Embryonic development time, male longevity and sex proportion were not affected by the diet or the host plant. Prey consumption was evaluated for three T. cucurbitaceus life history stages (fourth/fifth instar nymphs, female and male adults) on two types of prey (whitefly nymphs and S. cerealella eggs). On tomato, females were more voracious than males and nymphs. On tobacco, adults and nymphs consumed more S. cerealella than T.vaporariorum nymphs, but again, bug females preyed more than males and nymphs. Results demonstrate that T. cucurbitaceus can survive, develop and reproduce normally using both T. vaporariorum and S. cerealella eggs as prey on tobacco or tomato plants. This information can be useful for managing this predator against T. vaporariorum through conservative or augmentative biological control strategies.  相似文献

The tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), is considered to be a major pest that damages tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L; Solanaceae) crops in South American, European, and Mediterranean countries. This insect species is polyphagous (i.e., feeds on many types of food); hence, it could also develop on other cultivated host plants, principally solanaceous plants, such as potato (S. tuberosum L.; Solanaceae) and eggplant (S. melongena L.; Solanaceae). Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that host plant choice by adult T. absoluta is influenced by plant volatile organic compounds and larval host plant experience. One tomato cultivar (cv.) ‘Moneymaker’ and three potato cv. ‘Charlotte’ ‘Bintje,’ and ‘Nicola’ were tested. Using a flying tunnel, we observed that females reared on tomato preferred flying toward tomato and, to a lesser extent, potato cv. ‘Charlotte.’ These preferences might be explained by the high release of terpenes by these two plants. When conducting oviposition choice assays, we found no preference between tomato and potato in the number of eggs laid by females that had been previously reared on either host plant. This study indicates that the host finding behavior of T. absoluta is mediated by solanaceous volatiles, while oviposition behavior appears to depend on additional stimuli. These results provide baseline information for use in the development of new control strategies against T. absoluta using semiochemicals and plant breeding.  相似文献

The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, is commonly found on strawberry crops (Fragaria x ananassa). Strawberry plants have defensive mechanisms, which in turn influence the behavior of herbivores. The oviposition and development of the two-spotted spider mite were evaluated on the leaf disks of the cultivars ‘Aromas,’ ‘Camarosa,’ ‘Camino Real,’ ‘Diamante,’ ‘Diamante 10,’ ‘Diamante 50,’ ‘Festival,’ and ‘Seascape.’ It was observed that on cultivars such as ‘Aromas,’ ‘Camarosa,’ and ‘Seascape,’ immature survivorship was higher, but no difference was found during the developmental period from egg to adult of T. urticae. The immature development time was also longer on ‘Camarosa.’ Females laid more eggs on ‘Seascape’ (8.4 eggs/day), and the least on ‘Camarosa’ (1.0 egg/day). Mortality was higher at the larval stage and reached more than 50% in three cultivars ‘Camarosa,’ ‘Diamante,’ and ‘Seascape.’ Thus, the cultivars ‘Camarosa,’ ‘Diamante,’ and ‘Seascape’ were the ones that mostly affected the survival, development, and reproduction of T. urticae.  相似文献

The Zoophytophagous predator, Nesidiocoris tenuis (Reuter) (Hemiptera: Miridae) is one of the most important candidates for controlling Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) in tomato crops. This predator uses different signals including morphological plant traits, prey insects, and volatile substances produced by the infested plants and prey signals to find its suitable prey. These signals are different in each cultivar of a plant. We aimed to understand how N. tenuis finds its prey using volatiles from tomato plants damaged or infested with T. absoluta. The predator’s responses to various plant treatments on two cultivars of tomato plants were tested in a flight tunnel and a four-choice olfactometer. The volatile compounds released from the treatments were also collected and identified. The results of the olfactory experiments showed that the predators even in the absence of light chose the plants bearing their insect prey. This behavior was not the same in both cultivars, and N. tenuis had a tendency toward mechanically damaged of Early Urbana Y cultivar more than Cal JN3 cultivar. The differences in the amount of monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, and eugenol between cultivars may play a role in the differential attraction of N. tenuis towards infested plants. The difference in the volatile compounds was evident in two cultivars, and this was consistent with our bioassay results. Therefore, the choice of appropriate cultivar and use of herbivore-infested plant volatiles are important for developing a control strategy against T. absoluta and attract its predators.  相似文献

Susceptible and resistance wheat cultivars, Triticum aestivum L, were presented to two biotypes of Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), in multiple choice tests to assay their relative acceptability as host plants. Both apterae (third and fourth instars) and alate adults were offered plants at the two-leaf stage in different cultivar combinations at 22±1℃ and 16:8 (L: D) hour photoperiod. Apterae were released from Petri dishes in the center of a circle of test plants, whereas alatae dispersed from a mature aphid colony to settle on plants arranged in rows. Both alatae and apterous nymphs of both biotypes readily colonized all cultivars tested:‘2137', ‘Akron',‘Ankor’,‘ Halt’ ,‘ Jagger’ ,‘ Prairie Red’ , ‘Stanton',‘TAM 107',‘TAM 110',‘Trego', ‘ Yuma', and ‘Yumar'. Fewer biotype I apterae responded (settled and fed) in the combination containing more resistant (Dn4- and Dny-expressing) cultivars, compared to the combinations that had fewer. The reverse was true for biotype 2 apterae; more aphids responded in the combination containing the largest number of Dn4 expressing cultivars. Differential colonization of cultivars was observed in only one combination, in which biotype 2 apterae colonized Akron and Yumar in larger numbers than they did Stanton and Yuma. A separate experiment confirmed that, 48 hours after infestation, more biotype 2 apterae abandoned plants of Yuma than plants of Yumar. This differential response was likely due to genetic differences between the two ' near isogenic' lines that include the lack of Dn4 expression in Yuma. Choice tests with alatae did not result in differential rates of cultivar colonization by either biotype in any combination tested. These results suggest that young wheat plants appear to lack any meaningful antixenosis toward D. noxia, even though the aphids appear to perceive, and sometimes respond to, certain differences in cultivar suitability.  相似文献

Encarsia sophia (Girault and Dodd) is an autoparasitoid in the hymenopteran family Aphelinidae. The females develop as primary parasitoids on whitefly nymphs (primary hosts), whereas the males develop as hyperparasitoids on their own species or on other primary parasitoid species (secondary hosts). The autoparasitoids not only parasitise whiteflies but also kill them with strong host-feeding capacity. In this study, female and male E. sophia were reared on the primary hosts Trialeurodes vaporariorum and Bemisia tabaci ‘Q’, and the host-feeding and parasitism of wasps on both whitefly species were determined for the four possible different mating combinations: (i) E. sophia females reared on B. tabaci (ESF-BT) mated with E. sophia males from B. tabaci (ESM-BT), (ii) E. sophia females reared on T. vaporariorum (ESF-TV) mated with E. sophia males from T. vaporariorum (ESM-TV), (iii) ESF-BT mated with ESM-TV, and (iv) ESF-TV mated with ESM-BT. ESF-TV mated with ESM-TV killed the largest percentage of whitefly nymphs through host feeding. The ESF-TV with larger body size mating with larger ESM-TV killed more whitefly nymphs through host feeding than those mating with smaller ESM-BT. Whether B. tabaci or T. vaporariorum were used as hosts, ESF-TV mated with ESM-TV and ESM-BT and ESF-BT mated with ESM-BT significantly parasitised more whitefly nymphs than ESF-BT mated with ESM-TV. In general, ESF-BT mated with ESM-TV killed significantly fewer whitefly nymphs through parasitism and host feeding than the other three mating combinations on both whitefly species. These results indicated that the performance of autoparasitoids on insect pests was not only dependent on females but was also affected by mating with males from different primary host species.  相似文献

Whiteflies Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) and Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) are important pests in pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) crops in many countries. Contrary to what is observed for all other countries, in Uruguay, B. tabaci is mainly found on pepper and rarely on tomato, while T. vaporariorum is exclusively found on tomato. This study tested the oviposition preferences and biotic potential of these two whiteflies reared on both host plants. The developmental time, survival rates, longevity, fecundity and main population parameters were characterized. Both whitefly species showed different preference patterns regarding their host plants. T. vaporariorum preferred tomato instead of pepper to oviposit. Their developmental time is longer on pepper. B. tabaci preferred pepper, but the difference from tomato was not very strong. Pepper affects the biotic expression of T. vaporariorum negatively, while B. tabaci is able to develop equally on both host plants. These results show that the distribution differences of both whiteflies observed on both host plants could have a biological basis.  相似文献

Intraguild predation (IGP) takes place when natural enemies that use similar resources attack each other. The impact of IGP on biological control can be significant if the survival of natural enemy species is disrupted. In the present study, we assessed whether Geocoris punctipes (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae) engages in IGP on Eretmocerus eremicus (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) while developing on whitefly nymphs of Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae). In choice and non-choice tests, we exposed G. punctipes to parasitized and non-parasitized whitefly nymphs. We found that G. punctipes does practice IGP on E. eremicus. However, choice tests assessing G. punctipes consumption revealed a significant preference for non-parasitized T. vaporariorum nymphs. Subsequently, we investigated whether E. eremicus females modify their foraging behavior when exposed to conditions involving IGP risk. To assess this, we analyzed wasp foraging behavior under the following treatments: i) whitefly nymphs only (control = C), ii) whitefly nymphs previously exposed to a predator ( = PEP) and, iii) whitefly nymphs and presence of a predator ( = PP). In non-choice tests we found that E. eremicus did not significantly modify its number of attacks, attack duration, oviposition duration, or behavior sequences. However, E. eremicus oviposited significantly more eggs in the PEP treatment. In the PP treatment, G. punctipes also preyed upon adult E. eremicus wasps, significantly reducing their number of ovipositions and residence time. When the wasps were studied under choice tests, in which they were exposed simultaneously to all three treatments, the number of attacks and frequency of selection were similar under all treatments. These results indicate that under IGP risk, E. eremicus maintains several behavioral traits, but can also increase its number of ovipositions in the presence of IG-predator cues. We discuss these findings in the context of population dynamics and biological control.  相似文献

Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae), is a destructive pest of many ornamental and greenhouse crops throughout the world. In this research, effect of essential oil derived from lemon peel, Citrus aurantifolia (Hook.) on mortality of eggs, first-instar nymphs and on adult oviposition of T. vaporariorum (Westwood) was determined under laboratory conditions. Analysis of Citrus aurantifolia essential oil used for insect fumigation by phase gas chromatography revealed the presence of 16 compounds including Limonene (56.6%), β-pinene (16.3%) and α-terpineol (11.3%). Five concentrations of essential oil – 0.002, 0.004, 0.008, 0.016 and 0.032 (μl/ml) – were applied in fumigant toxicity experiments. Greater mortality was observed with increasing dose of essential oil. First-instar nymphs were more sensitive to essential oil treatments compared with eggs and adults that reduced the survival rate of T. vaporariorum by 58, 70 and 56% after treatment of eggs, nymphs and adult, respectively. Based on this study, essential oil derived from C. aurantifolia could be used as an effective and environmentally sustainable bioinsecticide for the control of T. vaporariorum.  相似文献

The sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), and the greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), are important pests of protected crops grown in warm climates. We compared efficacy of a new strain of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (ARP14) isolated from Riptortus pedestris (Hemiptera: Alydidae) with a commercial strain (GHA) against different life stages of both B. tabaci and T. vaporariorum. Eggs, nymphs, and adults were exposed to 1 × 108 conidia/mL of each strain using the leaf-dipping method. The mycosis rate of B. tabaci eggs (as a proportion) was relatively low (0.13 for B. bassiana ARP14 and 0.10 for B. bassiana GHA), while, for T. vaporariorum eggs, mycosis rate was 0.44 for B. bassiana GHA and 0.27 for B. bassiana ARP14. However, mycosis rate of 1st instars of both whiteflies was much higher than for eggs, for both strains (ARP14 and GHA). The developmental period of B. tabaci eggs exposed to ARP14 was significantly shorter than for either eggs treated with GHA or the control. For 2nd and 4th instar nymphs and adults of both whiteflies there were no differences in mycosis rates between the two B. bassiana strains. These results suggest that, B. bassiana ARP14 could be commercialized as a native biological control agent for control of B. tabaci and T. vaporariorum.  相似文献

Supplying a sufficient amount of available iron (Fe) for plant growth in hydroponic nutrient solutions is a great challenge. The chelators commonly used to supply Fe in nutrient solutions have several disadvantages and may negatively affect plant growth. In this research study we have synthesized certain Fe-amino acid chelates, including Fe-arginine [Fe(Arg)2], Fe-glycine [Fe(Gly)2], and Fe-histidine [Fe(His)2], and evaluated their efficacy as an Fe source for two tomato cultivars (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cvs. ‘Rani’ and ‘Sarika’) grown in nutrient solution. Application of Fe-amino acid chelates significantly increased root and shoot dry matter yield of both tomato cultivars compared with Fe-EDTA. Tomato plants supplied with Fe-amino acid chelates also accumulated significantly higher levels of Fe, Zn, and N in their roots and shoots compared with those supplied with Fe-EDTA. In ‘Sarika’, the effect of Fe-amino acid chelates on shoot Fe content was in the order Fe(His)2?>?Fe(Gly)2?>?Fe(Arg)2. In ‘Rani’, the addition of all synthesized Fe-amino acid chelates significantly increased activity of ascorbate peroxidase (APX) in comparison with Fe-EDTA, whereas in ‘Sarika’, only Fe(His)2 increased shoot APX activity. The results obtained indicated that using Fe-amino acid chelates in the nutrient solution could supply a sufficient amount of Fe for plant uptake and also improve root and shoot growth of tomato plants, although this increase was cultivar-dependent. According to the results, Fe-amino acid chelates can be used as an alternative for Fe-EDTA to supply Fe in nutrient solutions.  相似文献

The current study evaluated whether flowering phenology and yield attributes of different strawberry cultivars affect the abundance and feeding impact of tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois), as well as behavioral decisions made by feeding nymphs and ovipositing adults. The distribution of emerged nymphs in cage experiments involving nine different cultivars of June-bearing strawberry cultivars suggests that females lay more eggs on plants with numerous flower receptacles, while cultivar per se did not influence their oviposition behavior. A large number of nymphs emerged from receptacles of strawberry plants, while the distribution of emerged nymphs among receptacles, petioles, leaves, and stems varied for different cultivars. These results suggest that the relative intensity of damage caused by ovipositing females may vary for different cultivars. Foraging nymphs did not exhibit a preference for any strawberry cultivar per se, although the abundance of nymphs increased with the weight of receptacles, especially for late instars. Evaluating the density and feeding impact of L. lineolaris for different cultivars under field conditions revealed that some host plant attributes affect the abundance of plant bugs, such as early flowering season and high productivity. Decreasing number of emerged nymphs per flower per plant with increasing density of receptacles per plant suggests that females lay relatively more eggs per receptacle on plants with few receptacles; this pattern of oviposition may explain, in part, why patches with low density of plants typically have high incidence of damage. Planting a high yielding early season cultivar such as 'Cavendish' may contribute to reduce the incidence of damage by L. lineolaris.  相似文献

Cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii G.) populations seemed to fluctuate over the past years in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) perhaps as a result of excessive use of insecticides for controlling more problematic pests. Contradictory plant responses have been observed depending upon the aphid/plant system, and it is unclear if cotton aphids, abiotic stress or both are responsible for cotton yield reduction in aphid-infested fields. Our objectives were to investigate the diurnal changes in the physiology of cotton leaves following aphid herbivory, and the diurnal pattern of aphid feeding. The experiment was conducted in a growth chamber using the cotton cultivar ‘Stoneville 474’. Leaves of the same age and size were infested with wingless adults plus nymphs. Cotton aphids were allowed to increase in numbers without restriction for 9 days, after which the amounts of carbohydrates in aphid-honeydew, and the number of honeydew droplets excreted per aphid were measured. Photosynthetic rates, dark respiration rates and foliar non-structural carbohydrates were measured. The amount of individual carbohydrates found in the honeydew was significantly different with time. The total amount of carbohydrates excreted per aphid within a 24-h period averaged 2.5 μg. The number of honeydew droplets excreted per aphid varied significantly from time to time period. Cotton aphids did not significantly alter photosynthesis or respiration rates or non-structural carbohydrates on leaves. Aphid populations of approximately 300 per leaf on the 9th day of infestation did not appear to significantly alter the physiology of cotton leaves.  相似文献

The tomato-potato psyllid Bactericera [Paratrioza] cockerelli (Sulc) has recently caused losses exceeding 50% on fresh market tomatoes in California and Baja, Mexico by injecting a toxin that results in a condition known as 'psyllid yellows'. The objectives of this study were to: (i) document oviposition preferences on a range of tomato cultivars; (ii) determine threshold levels for psyllid densities that would cause psyllid yellows on tomatoes within the first three weeks following transplanting; and (iii) identify the most important 'psyllid yellows' symptoms that might be used in surveying and monitoring for this pest. Plant lines tested included the commonly-planted commercial cultivars 'Shady Lady' and 'QualiT 21', an older, previously commercial cultivar '7718 VFN', a common cultivar planted by consumers 'Yellow Pear', and a wild type plant accession, PI 134417. When given a choice, psyllids significantly preferred 'Yellow Pear' and avoided PI 134417 for oviposition. Under no-choice conditions psyllids laid significantly fewer eggs on PI 134417, but all the other plant lines were equally good substrates for laying eggs. Thus, oviposition preference is not likely to provide a functional management strategy in large plantings. On 'Shady Lady', psyllids preferred to oviposit on plants already infested with adults. On both 'Shady Lady' and '7718 VFN' oviposition was significantly greater on plants previously infested by nymphs as compared to uninfested control plants. This suggests that, at least for some cultivars, there is a physiological change in plant attractiveness following psyllid feeding. 'Yellow Pear' and 'QualiT 21' were relatively tolerant of psyllids, requiring 18 nymphs per plant to produce the disease symptoms. Only eight nymphs per plant were needed on 'Shady Lady' and '7718 VFN'. For all cultivars, the pest density showed strong correlations with measurements such as the number of yellowing leaves and leaflets and distorted leaves, which were as good as or better than the first factor extracted from principal component analysis. Therefore, such measurements have the potential to simplify field surveys.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to identify the allelopatic effect of the components of a mixture of essential oils (EO) contained in the buds and leaves of hazel (Corylus L.) on herbivores. We examined the effect of these compounds on the choice of plants of two different hazel cultivars by Phytoptus avellanae Nal. (filbert big bud mite) and Myzocallis coryli Goetze (filbert aphid), which are the most important pests of hazel in Poland and throughout the world. Our results show that plants of cv. ‘Mogulnus’ were more resistant than those of cv. ‘Barra’ to the feeding of mites and aphids in all study years. Using gas chromatography (GC) and GC/mass spectrometry methodology, we determined the qualitative and quantitative composition of EO in the buds and leaves of plants of these two hazel cultivars. The EO obtained from the analysed materials was a mixture of mono- and sesquiterpenes. The emission of volatile organic compounds from plants is known to repel or attract pests. The mixture of EO present in the hazel buds of cv. ‘Mogulus’, which is resistant to filbert big bud mite, was characterized by a high content of nerol, α-campholenol, methyl salicylate, spatulenol, β-caryophylene and δ-cadinene. In contrast, the leaves of this cultivar, colonized by filbert aphid but to a relatively small extent, contained greater quantities of nerol, α-campholenol, p-cymene, α-terpineol and germacrene D, than the leaves of cv. ‘Barra’, which is more accepted by aphids. However, the leaves of cv. ‘Barra’ were characterized by a considerably high content of menthol, limonene, isomenthone, methyl salicylate and L-menthone.  相似文献

The first record of the omnivorous predator Dicyphus maroccanus Wagner (Hemiptera: Miridae) inhabiting tomato crops in the Valencia region (East Coast of Spain) was in 2009. Since then, D. maroccanus has often been found preying on the eggs of Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) in this area. To evaluate this predator’s potential as a biological control agent, its life-history traits in the presence and absence of prey [(eggs of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)] on tomato plants were studied under laboratory conditions. Immature stages that preyed on eggs of E. kuehniella developed successfully. However, no nymph completed development on the plant without the addition of E. kuehniella eggs. To reach adulthood, male and female D. maroccanus nymphs consumed 267 and 312 E. kuehniella eggs, respectively. The net reproductive rate (R0) was estimated to be 34.52 female eggs per female, the generation time (T) was 40.48 days, and the estimated intrinsic rate of increase (rm) was 0.0868 females per female per day at 25 °C. In a second experiment, the capacity to detect plants infested or not infested with T. absoluta was studied using a Y-tube olfactometer. Female D. maroccanus were strongly attracted to the odor of T. absoluta-infested plants. In a third experiment, the capacity of D. maroccanus to control T. absoluta on tomato plants was investigated under extended laboratory conditions. Dicyphus maroccanus significantly reduced the number of T. absoluta-infested leaves in over 90 % of cases relative to control conditions. These results suggest that D. maroccanus could play a significant role in T. absoluta management. The potential of this zoophytophagous predator as a biocontrol agent on tomato crops is discussed.  相似文献

Background and aims

Six mutualistic endophytic fungi that are known to colonize the endorhiza have shown biological control properties against plant-parasitic nematodes. In this study we aim to investigate the potential of these endophytic fungi to reduce the phloem-feeding insect Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) on tomato.

Methods

To determine the host plant choice of T. vaporariorum, the total number of insects present on each plant was counted daily for 10 days, and then the second leaf below the shoot apex were examined for its chlorophyll content index (CCI).To separate and quantify the active compounds produced in the tomato leaves, a reversed phase high liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) analysis was performed.

Principle results

A greenhouse choice test showed that Trichoderma atroviride strain MT-20, T. atroviride strain S-2 and Fusarium oxysporum strain 162 (Fo162) reduced the number of greenhouse whiteflies fifty percent when compared to the untreated control during ten days after insect release. The highest level of biocontrol activity was attained with Fo162. The strains MT20, S-2, and Fo162 all demonstrated acropedal induction of resistance to the insects. The isolate Fusarium sp. strain Bonn-7 enhanced plant growth. The negative effect on insect attraction to the leaves of the endophyte treated plants was not associated with leaf altered chlorophyll content. RP-HPLC analysis revealed that inoculation of the fungus Fo162 induced a change in the accumulation of specific organic compounds in the tomato leaves that could be the cause of insect repellence.

Conclusions

This study demonstrated the high potential of mutualintic endophytic fungi, in particular of Fo162, to induce resistance in tomato against the phloemfeeding T. vaporariorum.  相似文献

The differences in the ability of the invading whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (commonly known as biotype B and hereafter as B) and Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) (both Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) to utilize salivary phenol‐oxidizing enzymes – polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and peroxidase (POD) to detoxify plant defensive phenolic compounds were explored. Polyphenol oxidase and POD were found in the saliva of both B and T. vaporariorum. For tomato colonies, the PPO and POD activities in the watery saliva of B were 2.27‐ and 1.34‐fold higher than those of T. vaporariorum. The PPO activities against specific phenolic compounds commonly found in plants were compared. The activities of those from B were significantly greater than those from T. vaporariorum. We also measured PPO activity in both species after they had fed on plants that were undamaged or had been previously damaged with either a plant pathogen [Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary (Peronosporales)] infection, mechanical damage, B infestation, or exogenous salicylic acid. For B, PPO activities in watery saliva increased 229, 184, 152, and 139% in response to the four treatments, whereas those of T. vaporariorum only increased 133, 119, 113, and 103%, respectively. Biotype B infestation significantly increased the total phenolic content of tomato leaves. Meanwhile, feeding on tomato infestation with B had no significant effect on the survival rate of B, but decreased the survival rate of T. vaporariorum significantly. These results suggest that B has stronger ability utilizing PPO to detoxify high concentrations of phenolics than T. vaporariorum, and this contributes to a significant advantage for B to hold high fitness on plants with induced resistance. Possible roles of salivary PPO in the competition between B and T. vaporariorum are discussed.  相似文献

The influence of three host plants, namely cucumber, tomato and eggplant, on functional response of male, virgin and mated female predatory bug Nesidiocoris tenuis was investigated on different densities of Trialeurodes vaporariorum nymphs. The 24-h experiment conducted at laboratory conditions revealed that N. tenuis exhibited a type II functional response to T. vaporariorum on host plants. There were no significant differences between attack rates, as well as handling times estimated for each adult stage of the predator between host plants. However, on each host plant, the handling time estimated for the mated female in comparison with two other adult stages had lower values (0.7952, 0.6827 and 0.8884?h?1 on cucumber, tomato and eggplant, respectively). Handling time estimated for the mated female on cucumber was significantly lower than that estimated for the male predator. The highest maximum handling rate (T/Th) was estimated for the mated female followed by the virgin female and male on all host plants. For three adult stages of the predator, the highest value of this parameter was determined on tomato followed by cucumber and eggplant. Unlike virgin and mated females, the host plant significantly affected prey consumption by the male. Prey consumed by mated females was higher than those obtained for two other adult stages of the predator on each host plant. The difference in trichome density between three host plants may be responsible for the obtained results. These results revealed that N. tenuis is more effective in the biological control of T. vaporariorum on tomato in comparison with cucumber and eggplant.  相似文献
