Summary An electron microscopical study was made of the coeloconic and placoid sensilla on the antennae of the aphids Aphis pomi, Macrosiphum euphorbiae, Nasonovia ribis-nigri, and Pemphigus bursarius. Scanning electron microscopy revealed some variation in morphology which may be functionally important but is more likely to reflect the evolution of these species. The placoid sensilla were shown by transmission electron microscopy to have the same basic structural pattern. Each group of two or three neurons is surrounded by two ensheathing cells. The ciliary regions of the dendrites pass through a vacuole into a cavity between an outer and an inner cuticle where they may be connected to the dendritic branches although such connections were not seen. Small pores (8 nm diameter) partially penetrate the cuticle implying that these sensilla have an olfactory function. They are suggested to be important in host selection by alate aphids. The coeloconic sensilla are poreless pegs with nonsensory cuticular projections at their tips. The distal portions of their dendrites contain densely packed microtubules and the cellular arrangement of the sensilla is similar to that of the placoid sensilla. It is suggested that they may function as thermoreceptors. The authors thank the Long Ashton Research Station, Bristol for use of the SEM facilities. A.K. Bromley gratefully acknowledges the tenure of a S.R.C. CASE Studentship and thanks Professor L.H. Finlayson for research facilities  相似文献

The antennae of Magicicada cassini (Homoptera : Cicadidae) (3–4 mm long) look similar in both sexes and consist of scape, pedicel, and a 5-segmented flagellum. The length of flagellar segment 1 varies independently in relation to head size and is slightly longer in females (0.96 mm) than in males (0.89 mm). The ventral side of flagellar segment 1 is covered with sensilla coeloconica comprising about 60 large, 10 medium-sized, and 35 small sensilla with pit diameters of 8–24, 6–10, and 2 μm, respectively. The large and the medium-sized sensilla coeloconica are multiporous single-walled sensilla with pore tubules, containing branched entangled dendrites from 3 receptor cells. The small sensilla coeloconica, situated primarily at the outer border of the sensillum field, are no-pore sensilla with inflexible sockets. They contain 2 unbranched dendrites extending to the tip of the peg, and 1 dendrite reaching to its base and wrapping around the other 2 dendrites. Small sensilla campaniformia (cap diameter 3 μm) are aligned at the outer border of the sensillum field and continue all along the flagellum. Up to 3 olfactory receptor cells were distinguished on the basis of their nerve impulse amplitudes through extracellular electrophysiological recordings from sensilla coeloconica, presumably large ones. They respond to stimulation by cyclic terpenoids with different but highly overlapping reaction spectra, and react selectively to structural variations of the molecules. No responses to CO2, temperature or moisture were recorded.  相似文献

The chemosensilla on the tarsi of Locusta migratoria were mapped using light microscopy, as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Only chemosensilla chaetica were found on the tarsi. On the basis of their ultrastructure, these can be grouped into three main subtypes: short, long, and sunken sensilla chaetica. Short sensilla chaetica can be further divided into two groups containing 6 or 7 neurons. Long sensilla chaetica are mainly located on the lateral surface of the tarsi. Short sensilla chaetica were mainly found on the dorsal surface of the tarsi. Sunken sensilla chaetica were only found on the ventral surface, such as the pulvilli and arolium. Immunocytochemical localization of chemosensory protein (CSP) was performed on ultrathin sections of chemosensilla on tarsi. The antiserum against LmigCSP‐II intensively labeled all three types of sensilla chaetica. Gold granules were concentrated in the outer sensillum lymph surrounding the dendrite sheath, while the inner sensillum lymph containing dendrite branches was never labeled. Massive labeling with the anti‐LmigCSP‐II was also found in cuticle of the pulvilli on the ventral surface of tarsi. J. Morphol. 2009. © 2009 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

In the species‐specific and obligate mutualism between the fig (Moraceae: Ficus spp.) and its pollinator (Hymenoptera: Agaonidae), the continuity of lifecycle of both partners completely depends on the female pollinator's ability to detect receptive figs. To better understand the chemical location mechanism, we examined the antennae and their sensilla of the female fig pollinator Eupristina sp. using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The antennae of female Eupristina sp. are geniculated, and in total, there were seven types of sensilla found on the antennae: two types of multiporous placoid sensilla (type 1 is sausage‐like and type 2 is rounded), sensilla trichodea (ST), basiconic sensilla (BS), chaetica sensilla (ChS), coeloconic sensilla (CoS), and one specialized sensillum classified as sensillum obscurum (SO). We described external morphology, abundance, distribution, ultrastructure and discussed putative functions. We inferred from their ultrastructures as chemoreceptors that two types of multiporous placoid sensilla, BS and CoS, were innervated by sensory neurons. The aporous type ST, ChS, and SO were not innervated by dendrites which may function as mechanoreceptor/proprioceptor. These results were also discussed in relation to the interaction between Eupristina sp. and its host fig.  相似文献

The cuticular sensory receptors that are found on the apex of the labium of hemipterans play an important role in their feeding behavior. In this study we describe the ultrastructure, number, and distribution of sensilla on the labium apex of the chinch bug, Blissus leucopterus leucopterus. Each apical field of sensilla on the labium contains 11 uniporous peg sensilla and one sensillum chaeticum. The uniporous peg sensilla are innervated by 4–5 bipolar neurons that send dendrites in the lumen of each peg. Three neurons are associated with each sensillum chaeticum, two neurons have dendrites in the lumen of the sensillum, and the third dendrite ends in a tubular body at the base of the sensillum. Behavioral tests that involve chemical blockage of the sensory receptors show the importance of the labial sensilla in feeding behavior. Both morphological and behavioral evidence indicate that the labial sensilla have a chemosensitive function.  相似文献

The fine structure and distribution of various types of antennal sensilla in three nymphal stages and in adults of both solitary-reared (solitary) and crowd-reared (gregarious) phases of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, were investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Four types of sensilla were identified: sensilla basiconica, s. trichodea, s. coeloconica and s. chaetica. S. basiconica contain up to 50 sensory neurons, each of which displays massive dendritic branching. The sensillar wall is penetrated by a large number of pores. In contrast, s. trichodea contain one to three sensory neurons that branch to give five or six dendrites in the sensillar lumen; the sensillum wall is penetrated by relatively few pores. The s. coeloconica are situated in spherical cuticular pits on the antennal surface. The s. coeloconica are of two types: one type contains one to three sensory neurons with double sensillar walls penetrated by slit-like pores, whereas the second type contains four sensory neurons with non-porous double sensillar walls. The s. chaetica have a flexible socket and a thick non-porous sensillum wall and contain four sensory neurons that send unbranched dendrites to a terminal pore. A fifth sensory neuron of the s. chaetica terminates in a tubular body at the base of the hair. S. basiconica and coeloconica are normally distributed over the entire antennal flagellum, with a concentration in the middle segments; s. trichodea have three areas of concentration on the 5th, 10th and 14th flagellar segments. Sensilla chaetica are most abundant on the terminal segment. Locusts raised in solitary conditions have more olfactory sensilla (s. basiconica and s. coeloconica) than crowd-reared locusts. The difference in sensillar numbers is more evident in adults than in nymphs. These results suggest that differences in the odour-mediated behaviour of nymphs and adults, and between the phases of S. gregaria, may be attributable to differences at the sensory input level.  相似文献

While chemical communication has been investigated intensively in vertebrates and insects, relatively little is known about the sensory world of spiders despite the fact that chemical cues play a key role in natural and sexual selection in this group. In insects, olfaction is performed with wall–pore and gustation with tip-pore sensilla. Since spiders possess tip-pore sensilla only, it is unclear how they accomplish olfaction. We scrutinized the ultrastructure of the trichoid tip-pore sensilla of the orb weaving spider Argiope bruennichi—a common Palearctic species the males of which are known to be attracted by female sex pheromone. We also investigated the congener Argiope blanda. We examined whether the tip-pore sensilla differ in ultrastructure depending on sex and their position on the tarsi of walking legs of which only the distal parts are in contact with the substrate. We hypothesized as yet undetected differences in ultrastructure that suggest gustatory versus olfactory functions. All tarsal tip-pore sensilla of both species exhibit characters typical of contact-chemoreceptors, such as (a) the presence of a pore at the tip of the sensillum shaft, (b) 2–22 uniciliated chemoreceptive cells with elongated and unbranched dendrites reaching up to the tip-pore, (c) two integrated mechanoreceptive cells with short dendrites and large tubular bodies attached to the sensillum shaft's base, and (d) a socket structure with suspension fibres that render the sensillum shaft flexible. The newly found third mechanoreceptive cell attached to the proximal end of the peridendritic shaft cylinder by a small tubular body was likely overlooked in previous studies. The organization of tarsal tip-pore sensilla did not differ depending on the position on the tarsus nor between the sexes. As no wall-pore sensilla were detected, we discuss the probability that a single type of sensillum performs both gustation and olfaction in spiders.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the tricorn sensilla of the woodlouse Porcellio scaber was investigated in cryofixed and freeze-substituted, or chemically fixed specimens. The tricorn sensilla have a foramenized triangular-shaped outer hair and bear a poreless rod-like inner hair. The conical base of the inner hair is connected to the base of the outer hair by a complex cuticular structure. Each sensillum contains three sensory cells. The tip of one of the three dendrites contains a tubular body and is clamped between two bulges of the dendritic sheath. The two other dendrites protrude to the tip of the inner hair, flush against the cuticular wall. The microtubules in the ciliary segments are arranged in nine double tubuli that have neither osmiophilic cores nor arms. The ciliary rootlets are small. The inner segment of the largest dendrite wraps around the two smaller dendrites and one of seven enveloping cells in a mesaxon-like manner. Although this ultrastructure deviates considerably from most crustacean mechanosensitive sensilla, it nevertheless suggests a mechanosensitive function, at least for one of the sensory cells. In many aspects, the tricorn sensilla resemble the thermohygrosensilla of insects. However, our results suggest that the structural criteria for thermo-hygro-sensitivity used in insects cannot simply be applied to crustaceans.  相似文献

The morphology of spider sensilla. I. Mechanoreceptors   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The common tactile hair sensilla of spider tarsi were studied in web spiders (Araneus) and ground spiders (Lycosa, Dugesiella) using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. All of these sensilla are innervated by three bipolar neurons whose dendrites end proximally at the sensillum base. Each dendritic terminal exhibits a tubular body, a dense array of microtubules typical for mechanoreceptive sensilla. A dendritic sheath encloses the outer dendritic segments and connects the dendritic terminals to cuticular components of the hair sensillum in three different ways: (1) A distal extension of the dendritic sheath connects to the midline of the hair base; (2) A forked arrangement of cuticular (?) strands attaches on both lateral sides of the hair base, and (3) The socket cuticle directly contacts a part of the dendritic sheath. The latter connection provides a fixed position for the three dendritic terminals and any movement of the hair shaft could be transmitted via connections (I) and (2). The triple innervation strongly suggests a directional sensitivity of these sensilla.Structural comparison between arachnid and insect mechanoreceptive sensilla indicates that tactile hair sensilla in Arachnida are multi-innervated whereas the corresponding reccptors in Insecta are singly innervated.  相似文献

We have investigated the development of chemosensilla and the secretion of odorant‐binding proteins (OBPs) and chemosensory proteins (CSPs) in the embryo of Locusta migratoria manilensis. We first report the changes of each sensillum in embryo just preceding hatch in detail and show that different sensilla have different developmental processes. Trichogen cells are first involved in forming the structure of pegs, and then, after retraction, they start secreting OBPs and CSPs in the sensillar lymph. The synthesis of LmigOBP1 starts during the embryogenesis about 0.5 h preceding hatching, specifically in sensilla trichodea and basiconica of the antenna. LmigOBP2, instead, was only found in the outer sensillum lymph (oSl) of sensilla chaetica of the antenna, while we could not detect LmigOBP3 in any type of sensilla of the antenna. The ontogenesis of CSPs in the embryos is similar to that of OBPs. Expression of CSPI homolog in Locusta migratoria is detected using the antiserum raised against SgreCSPI. CSPI is specifically expressed in the outer sensillum lymph of sensilla chaetica of the antenna, and anti‐LmigCSPII dose not label any sensilla of the embryos. These data indicate that in locusts, OBPs and CSPs follow different temporal expression patterns, and also that OBPs are expressed in different types of sensilla. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Olfactory receptor neurons present in two morphological sensillum types on the male Schistocerca gregaria antenna were for the first time investigated physiologically when stimulated with behaviourally relevant odours. Neurons present in trichoid/basiconic sensilla showed clear excitatory responses to compounds present in the male-produced aggregation pheromone and also to a plant produced compound. Sensilla could be categorised physiologically according to the responses of their receptor neurons to the tested stimuli. Also receptor neurons present in sensilla coeloconica responded to aggregation pheromone components, but always in an inhibitory fashion. These neurons could, however, be excited by a plant produced compound and by some acids present in the nymphal odour. The antennal lobe of the male S. gregaria was observed to contain about 1000 very small glomerular structures. Single receptor neurons were stained from the antenna to the antennal lobe using a cobalt lysine technique. These stainings revealed a multi glomerular axonal branching pattern of antennal receptor neurons.Abbreviations AN antennal nerve - AL antennal lobe - RN receptor neuron  相似文献

Sensilla on the antennae of adult and last-instar nymphs of the tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Hemiptera: Miridae), were examined with light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Six different types were identified in adult females and males and 5 types in last-instar nymphs: types 1 and 4 are sensilla trichodea, 2 and 3 are sensilla chaetica, and 5 and 6 are sensilla basiconica. Type 1 are located at distal region of terminal segment and type 2 are located at distal regions of proximal 3 segments in both adults and nymphs. Type 3 is present on all segments, more numerous on scape and pedicel and less abundant on distal third and fourth segments in both adult and nymphal stages. Types 4 and 6 are absent on the scape and present on the distal 3 antennal segments in adults, but they are present only on the distal-most antennal segment in nymphs. Type 5 sensilla are present only on second antennal segments in adults and are absent in nymphs. Sexual dimorphism is observed in total numbers: there are significantly more type(s) 3, 4, 5 and 6 sensilla in adult males than adult females. Types 1, 4 and 5 are multiporous with thin cuticle, branched dendrites and pore tubules which suggests an olfactory function. These sensilla have 3, 3 and 2 neurons, respectively. The type 6 sensillum has an apical pore and pores in the cuticular wall, and is innervated by 5 nerve cells with unbranched dendrites. Sensillar types 2 and 3 have thick cuticle, a single apical pore and nerve cells with unbranched dendrites. Type 2 has 1 neuron and type 3 has 2 chambers and 2 nerve cells.

The chemoreceptors of Limulus polyphemus (L.) are polyneuronal sensilla found in the spines of the coxal gnathobases of each walking leg, the spines of the chilarial appendages, and the chelae of all the limbs. Each sensillum contains 6–15 bipolar sensory cells that share a single pore in the cuticle. The dendrites of the sensory cells of each sensillum course to the cuticle together. These attenuate sharply and enter a canal in the cuticle as a very narrow terminal thread. The dendrites retain their identity in the thread, but with the light microscope, they are usually not visible individually. Each thread, consisting of 6–15 dendrites, is accompanied to the cuticular surface by a cuticular tubule found within the canal. The chemoreceptor sensilla of the gnathobase, chilarium, and chela, the temperature organs of Patten, and the flabellar receptor organs all have the same basic organization. In general this is the same structural plan shown by chemoreceptors of other arthropods. Several different mechanisms of peripheral physiological interaction among receptor cells are possible with a sensillum organization like that described here for Limulus.  相似文献

One pair of gustatory sensilla was found on the epipharynx ofBombyx mori larvae, and some morphological and electrophysiological characteristics of the epipharyngeal sensilla were investigated. They are sensilla coeloconica composed of a small papilla with a pore at the tip and a swelling of cuticle encircling the papilla. Three bipolar neurons innervate each sensillum. One neuron is an inositol receptor which responds to inositol only. Another cell responds with action potentials of relatively large amplitude to some feeding deterrent substances, such as strychnine nitrate. The thresholds of these cells for inositol and strychnine nitrate are approximately 10−4 M and 10−7 M, respectively. At least two kinds of spikes can be observed when these sensilla are stimulated with some salts and acids. Dose-response relationships and time courses of responses to inositol and strychnine nitrate were also examined in this study.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Porphyrophora (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Margarodidae) is a genus of soil‐inhabiting scale insects. The antennal sensilla and their innervation in the first‐instar nymphs of Porphyrophora sophorae were studied using light microscopy and scanning and transmission electron microscopy to understand the function of these sensilla and determine the sensillar innervation feature on these small antennae. The results show that the six‐segmented antennae of these nymphs have 20–23 sensilla which can be morphologically classified into seven types, for example, one Böhm's bristle (Bb), one campaniform sensillum (Ca), one Johnston's organ (Jo), 13–16 aporous sensilla trichodea (St), two coeloconic sensilla (Co), one straight multiporous peg (Mp1), and one curvy multiporous peg (Mp2). According to their function, these sensilla can be categorized into three categories: mechanoreceptors, that is, Bb, Ca, Jo, and St; thermo/hygroreceptors, that is, Co only; and chemoreceptors, that is, Mp1 and Mp2. The dendrites that innervate the Mp1, Mp2, and Co sensilla combine to form a large nerve tract (NT1) in the antennal lumen. Because NT1 extends through and out of the antenna, the somata of these neurons are present in the lymph cavity of the insect's head. The dendrites that innervate the mechanoreceptors form another nerve tract (NT2). The somata of these neurons are located inside the scape and pedicel. J. The sensory structures present on the palps and legs of adult Argas persicus Oken (Ixodoidea: Argasidae) were studied by light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The number, distribution, surface morphology and the fine structure of the prominent sensilla present on these appendages were determined. The palps have 2 morphologically prominent types of sensilla: one with a grooved surface of the hair and the other having a non-grooved hair. The TEM distinguishes at least 4 prominent subtypes in grooved sensilla with single or double lumina and dendrites occupying the periphery of the central lumen or distributed all over the central lumen. Amongst the sensilla with non-grooved hair-shaft, a rare type of Olfactory Mechanoreceptive (OM) sensillum was found on the palps and the first legs of A. persicus. At the base of the hair-shaft, the OM sensillum has 2 mechanosensory dendrites. The hair-shaft of the sensillum has a porous cuticle, characteristic of an olfactory sensillum. The lumen of the hair-shaft is invested with branching dendrites from 3–8 neurons, which are surrounded by 4 sheath cells. The sensilla on the legs, including those present in the Hallers organ, are of at least 3 prominent categories. (i) Single wall with un-innervated hair-shaft. (ii) Single wall, multiporous sensillum with dendrites present in the hair shaft. (iii) Double walls with spoke channels and dendrites present in the central lumen. Sensory projections from the crown of sensilla located on the distal end of the palp extend to the palpal and suboesophageal (SOG) ganglia. Projections in the SOG extend further to the contralateral side. Sensilla in the Hallers organ project to the first pedal ganglion and to the anterodorsal region of supraoesophageal ganglion. As expected, the primary sensory projections from the sensilla of the other 3 legs extend to the respective pedal ganglia.  相似文献

The antennae of Lepidoptera Neopseustidae were examined with the scanning electron microscope. The studied species, Nematocentropus cfr. omeiensis, Neopseustis meyricki, Synempora andesae, Apoplania valdiviana and Apoplania penai possess nine types of antennal flagellum sensilla: multiporous large sensilla basiconica, multiporous thin sensilla basiconica, multiporous small sensilla basiconica, multiporous sensilla trichodea, multiporous sensilla coeloconica; uniporous sensilla chaetica; aporous sensilla chaetica, aporous stylus-shaped sensilla chaetica, aporous sensilla styloconica. The multiporous sensillum type here termed “multiporous large sensillum basiconicum” is unknown from other Lepidoptera and probably constitutes an autapomorphy of the family Neopseustidae. This sensillum type is remarkable by having a single base in female Apoplania and Synempora while in male Apoplania it has a bifid or trifid base, and in male Synempora it is composed of two or three incompletely separated hairs. This may be the first recorded example of a sexually dimorphic lepidopteran sensillum type. The stylus-shaped sensillum chaeticum is a primitive type which occurs only in some lower Lepidoptera.  相似文献
