We measured the following variables to investigate the effects of fasting and temperature on swimming performance in juvenile qingbo (Spinibarbus sinensis): the critical swimming speed (Ucrit), resting metabolic rate (ṀO2rest) and active metabolic rate (ṀO2active) of fish fasting for 0 (control), 1, 2 and 4 weeks at low and high acclimation temperatures (15 and 25 °C). Both fasting treatment and temperature acclimation had significant effects on all parameters measured (P<0.05). Fasting at the higher temperature had a negative effect on all measured parameters after 1 week (P<0.05). However, when acclimated to the lower temperature, fasting had a negative effect on Ucrit until week 2 and on (ṀO2rest), (ṀO2active) and metabolic scope (MS, (ṀO2active)(ṀO2rest)) until week 4 (P<0.05). The values of all parameters at the lower temperature were significantly lower than those at the higher temperature in the identical fasting period groups except for (ṀO2rest) of the fish that fasted for 2 weeks. The relationship between fasting time (T) and Ucrit was described as Ucrit(15)=−0.302T2−0.800T+35.877 (r=0.781, n=32, P<0.001) and Ucrit(25)=0.471T2−3.781T+50.097 (r=0.766, n=32, P<0.001) at 15 and 25 °C, respectively. The swimming performance showed less decrease in the early stage of fasting but more decrease in the later stage at the low temperature compared to the high temperature, which might be related to thermal acclimation time, resting metabolism, respiratory capacity, energy stores, enzyme activity in muscle tissue and energy substrate utilization changes with fasting between low and high temperatures. The divergent response of the swimming performance to fasting in qingbo at different temperatures might be an adaptive strategy to seasonal temperature and food resource variation in their habitat.  相似文献

Aim

This work aims to achieve the highest possible monitor units (MU) reduction using the MU Objective tool included in the Eclipse treatment planning system, while preserving the plan quality.

Background

The treatment planning system Eclipse (Varian Medical Systems, Palo Alto, CA) includes a control mechanism for the number of monitor units of volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) plans, named the MU Objective tool.

Material and methods

Forty prostate plans, 20 gynecological plans and 20 head and neck plans designed with VMAT were retrospectively studied. Each plan (base plan) was optimized without using the MU Objective tool, and it was re-optimized with different values of the Maximum MU (MaxMU) parameter of the MU Objective tool. MU differences were analyzed with a paired samples t-test and changes in plan quality were assessed with a set of parameters for OARs and PTVs.

Results

The average relative MU difference (ΔMU¯) considering all treatment sites, was the highest when MaxMU = 400 (?4.2%, p < 0.001). For prostate plans, the lowest ΔMU¯ was obtained (?3.7%, p < 0.001). For head and neck plans ΔMU¯ was ?7.3% (p < 0.001) and for gynecological plans ΔMU¯ was 7.0% (p = 0.002). Although similar MU reductions were observed for both sites, for some gynecological plans maximum differences were greater than 10%. All the assessed parameters for PTVs and OARs sparing showed average differences below 2%.

Conclusion

For the three studied clinical sites, establishing MaxMU = 400 led to the optimum MU reduction, maintaining the original dose distribution and dosimetric parameters practically unaltered.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of exercise in the heat on thermoregulatory responses and plasma vasoactive intestinal peptide concentration (VIP) and whether it is modulated by ice-slushy consumption. Ten male participants cycled at 62% V̇O2max for 90 min in 32 °C and 40% relative humidity. A thermoneutral (37 °C) or ice-slushy (−1 °C) sports drink was given at 3.5 ml kg−1 body mass every 15 min during exercise. VIP and rectal temperature increased during exercise (mean±standard deviation: 4.6±4.4 pmol L−1, P=0.005; and 1.3±0.4 °C, P<0.001 respectively) and were moderately associated (r=0.35, P=0.008). While rectal temperature and VIP were not different between trials, ice-slushy significantly reduced heat storage (P=0.010) and skin temperature (time×trial interaction P=0.038). It appears that VIP does not provide the signal linking cold beverage ingestion and lower skin temperature in the heat.  相似文献

The main aim of the study was to assess the influence of biological maturity at birth on growth processes in the subsequent years and during puberty in girls. The material of this study comes from the outpatient clinic cards and cross-sectional research on girls from the province of Wielkopolska in Poland. It includes data of 527 girls. The influence of perinatal maturity on body weight in the later stages of ontogeny was determined with the use of the Kruskal–Wallis test and the Mann–Whitney U test. In order to determine the relationship between perinatal maturity and age at menarche, the survival analysis module was used.The results show a diverse influence of perinatal maturity on the values of body weight achieved in later years of life. The indicated predictive factors included both birth weight and gestational age. In the examined girls menarche occurred between the 10th year and the 17th year of life (X¯=12.87, s = 1.26; Me = 13 years). The comparison showed a significant variation in age at menarche depending on the length of pregnancy (log-rank χ22=27.068, p < 0.0001) and birth weight (log-rank χ22=23.241, p < 0.0001). There was no variation in maturation of the examined girls conditioned by the occurrence of intra-uterine growth retardation (log-rank χ22=2.046, p > 0.05). Remote prognoses as to the postnatal development of preterm-born children and/or children with low birth weight indicate adverse influence of these variables on age at menarche. Perinatal biological maturity of a newborn conditions the course of postnatal development.  相似文献

The biomechanical environment of the optic nerve head (ONH), of interest in glaucoma, is strongly affected by the biomechanical properties of sclera. However, there is a paucity of information about the variation of scleral mechanical properties within eyes and between individuals. We thus used biaxial testing to measure scleral stiffness in human eyes. Ten eyes from 5 human donors (age 55.4±3.5 years; mean±SD) were obtained within 24 h of death. Square scleral samples (6 mm on a side) were cut from each ocular quadrant 3–9 mm from the ONH centre and were mechanically tested using a biaxial extensional tissue tester (BioTester 5000, CellScale Biomaterials Testing, Waterloo). Stress–strain data in the latitudinal (toward the poles) and longitudinal (circumferential) directions, here referred to as directions 1 and 2, were fit to the four-parameter Fung constitutive equation W=c(eQ?1), where Q=c1E112+c2E222+2c3E11E22 and W, c’s and Eij are the strain energy function, material parameters and Green strains, respectively. Fitted material parameters were compared between samples. The parameter c3 ranged from 10?7 to 10?8, but did not contribute significantly to the accuracy of the fitting and was thus fixed at 10?7. The products c?c1 and c?c2, measures of stiffness in the 1 and 2 directions, were 2.9±2.0 and 2.8±1.9 MPa, respectively, and were not significantly different (two-sided t-test; p=0.795). The level of anisotropy (ratio of stiffness in orthogonal directions) was 1.065±0.33. No statistically significant correlations between sample thickness and stiffness were found (correlation coefficients=?0.026 and ?0.058 in directions 1 and 2, respectively). Human sclera showed heterogeneous, near-isotropic, nonlinear mechanical properties over the scale of our samples.  相似文献
