Many aquatic and riparian plant species are characterized by the ability to reproduce both sexually and asexually. Yet, little is known about how spatial variation in sexual and asexual reproduction affects the genotypic diversity within populations of aquatic and riparian plants. We used six polymorphic microsatellites to examine the genetic diversity within and differentiation among 17 populations (606 individuals) of Sparganium emersum, in two Dutch-German rivers. Our study revealed a striking difference between rivers in the mode of reproduction (sexual vs. asexual) within S. emersum populations. The mode of reproduction was strongly related to locally reigning hydrodynamic conditions. Sexually reproducing populations exhibited a greater number of multilocus genotypes compared to asexual populations. The regional population structure suggested higher levels of gene flow among sexually reproducing populations compared to clonal populations. Gene flow was mainly mediated via hydrochoric dispersal of generative propagules (seeds), impeding genetic differentiation among populations even over river distances up to 50 km. Although evidence for hydrochoric dispersal of vegetative propagules (clonal plant fragments) was found, this mechanism appeared to be relatively less important. Bayesian-based assignment procedures revealed a number of immigrants, originating from outside our study area, suggesting intercatchment plant dispersal, possibly the result of waterfowl-mediated seed dispersal. This study demonstrates how variation in local environmental conditions in river systems, resulting in shifting balances of sexual vs. asexual reproduction within populations, will affect the genotypic diversity within populations. This study furthermore cautions against generalizations about dispersal of riparian plant species in river systems.  相似文献

Flowing water can disperse a high number of seeds and vegetative propagules over long distances and is therefore a very important dispersal vector in wetland habitats. Although the dispersal of seeds is relatively well studied, the dispersal of vegetative propagules has received less attention. However, in riparian and aquatic systems where many species have clonal growth forms, it can be very important. The relative importance of vegetative propagules in the dispersal of fen species was assessed first by determining their relative abundance in the field and second, by determining the buoyancy of plant fragments of ten fen species experimentally. On average, vegetative propagules made up 3.2–58.9% of the total propagule number (mainly Elodea nutallii). Buoyancy of the tested species ranged from 25 days to over 6 months. Surprisingly, the propagules of Stratiotes aloides and Hydrocharis morsus-ranae increased buoyancy when spring started (after ca. 100 days). The results demonstrate that vegetative propagules of riparian and aquatic fen species have a high capacity to disperse over long distances via water and are therefore likely to play an important role in the colonisation of new habitats. Especially because in nine out of the ten species tested, over 50% of the propagules were still viable after 6 months of floating.  相似文献

1. Migratory waterbirds are major vectors for the dispersal of aquatic plants. However, quantitative field studies of the frequency of transport are scarce, and the relative importance of internal and external transport remains unclear. 2. We quantified and compared the rates of internal and external transport of aquatic plant propagules by teal (Anas crecca) in the Camargue (southern France), inspecting the lower gut contents of birds that had been shot (n = 366) and washing birds that had been live‐trapped (n = 68) during the winters of 2006–2007 and 2007–2008. 3. Intact propagules (n = 902) of 21 plant taxa were recorded in the rectum of teal, of which 16 germinated or were shown to be viable. Intact propagules were recorded in the rectum of 20% of teal, with up to 171 propagules per individual bird. Chara oogonia were most abundant (60% of intact propagules), suggesting that small size favours internal transport. Eleocharis palustris, Juncus spp. and Potamogeton pusillus (17, 7 and 6% of intact propagules, respectively) were also very abundant. 4. Intact propagules (n = 12) of 10 plant taxa were found on the outside of live teal, and four of these taxa later germinated. Intact propagules were found on 18% of teal. No teal was found to carry more than one propagule externally. There was no difference in size between propagules transported internally and externally. 5. Teal are major dispersers of plants within the Camargue, despite being highly granivorous. Contrary to widespread assumptions in the literature, endozoochory by ducks appears to be a much more important mode of dispersal for aquatic plants than exozoochory. We found no evidence of changes in the probability of plant propagule dispersal at a landscape scale over the course of the winter, so propagule production and zoochory appear to be decoupled over time in aquatic systems.

1. Dispersal of propagules by waterbirds is thought to be important for wetland plants because of the abundance of birds and their frequent movements among aquatic habitats. Differences in bird characteristics (size, movement, feeding ecology) were expected to lead to different outcomes for plant dispersal. 2. We investigated heterogeneity in plant dispersal by ducks (Anas superciliosa, Anas gracilis, Anas castanea). We calculated the probability of transport of viable seeds by germinating propagules retrieved from feathers and feet (epizoochory) and the contents of the oesophagus, gizzard and lower gut (endozoochory). 3. The abundance and richness of seeds carried internally and externally did not differ among sympatric bird species. We used estimates from the literature of movements of Anas species to approximate dispersal kernels for the transport of plant propagules. 4. Heterogeneity in the abundance and movement ecology of disperser species will result in differing patterns and degrees of connectivity for wetland plant metacommunities. Sedentary waterfowl are likely to have an important role in replenishing propagules and connecting aquatic metacommunities over small distances. Nomadic waterfowl may facilitate long‐distance dispersal. We discuss the implications of differences between duck species in movement patterns for connectivity of aquatic plant metacommunities across landscapes.  相似文献

Ceratophyllum spp., Callitriche spp., Zannichellia spp. and Potamogeton pectinatus L. are widespread submerged macrophyte species, often occurring at high abundance and forming an integral part of the vegetation of many types of shallow aquatic systems. Several species occur in both freshwater and brackish water habitats. Most have a mixed reproduction system and can reproduce sexually by seeds and propagate asexually by rhizomes, turions, root tubers or axillary tubers. It is hypothesized that sexual propagules are more important than vegetative fragments to ensure long-distance-dispersal, which in case of frequent bird or water flow-mediated dispersal should lead to lowered genetic differentiation. At a regional level, we used dominant ISSR markers in a multi-species approach and observed the largest clonal differentiation between brackish water and freshwater populations of the western European lowland (Belgium). Differentiation was pronounced at taxon level (e.g. Zannichellia), as a salinity gradient (P. pectinatus) or as a coastal-to-inland conductivity gradient (Callitriche obtusangula). These differences and trends suggested a very limited dispersal at regional level across both habitats and regions. To test the hypothesis whether vegetative reproduction and dispersal may have an important function in maintenance of the species at local scale, we investigated the microsatellite diversity and clonal distribution within and between populations of P. pectinatus from a single catchment, representing upstream forest ponds and downstream river sites along the Woluwe (Brussels, Belgium). Clonal diversity was low on average, however, with a higher number of multilocus genotypes in upstream forest ponds than in downstream river sites. A few but abundant clones were present along various stretches of the river indicating clonal spread and establishment over larger distances within the river. Clonal dispersal at a local scale was more pronounced in river than in pond habitats, indicating a higher relative importance of water flow than bird-mediated dispersal for establishment of P. pectinatus in river sites. Dispersal of seeds and establishment of seedlings were assumed more effective within ponds than in river habitats. Upstream forest ponds can be regarded as source populations and refuges of clonal diversity for recolonization of the more stressful downstream river habitat.  相似文献

The Crested Lark has a very complex taxonomy, partly as a result of a strong variation in plumage ground color seemingly linked with environmental factors. However, large variations in body size and bill shape further complicate the situation in the Maghreb. In this paper, we first present a set of hypotheses to explain patterns of morphological variation around the Mediterranean Sea. A phylogeographical analysis covering all major biogeographical areas in the species' range is then performed to test these scenarios. Three mtDNA groups with distinct geographical distribution were identified. The randonii clade (= G. (c.) randonii) is endemic from central Maghreb and is phylogenetically basal relative to cristata and senegallensis. These two latter groups are much more widespread. The cristata clade is found in NW Morocco, throughout Europe and W Asia and in NE Africa, while senegallensis regroups the populations sampled in the Western Sub-Saharan Africa and in NE Maghreb (E Algeria, Tunisia). A combination of genetic and paleoenvironmental evidences supports a scenario of allopatric differentiation of these two lineages outside the Maghreb, with subsequent range expansion leading to their secondary presence in the Maghreb. However, the alternative hypothesis of differentiation in two, or even three separate Maghreb refuges cannot be completely dismissed with the present data. Interestingly, the Sahara desert and the Gibraltar Strait did not act as permanent barriers to dispersal in this species. In addition, the populations in the Maghreb are consistently longer-billed than their closest relatives, suggesting a role for natural selection or phenotypic plasticity.  相似文献

The role of hydrochory in structuring riparian and wetland vegetation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Hydrochory, or the passive dispersal of organisms by water, is an important means of propagule transport, especially for plants. During recent years, knowledge about hydrochory and its ecological consequences has increased considerably and a substantial body of literature has been produced. Here, we review this literature and define the state of the art of the discipline. A substantial proportion of species growing in or near water have propagules (fruits, seeds or vegetative units) able to disperse by water, either floating, submerged in flowing water, or with the help of floating vessels. Hydrochory can enable plants to colonize sites out of reach with other dispersal vectors, but the timing of dispersal and mechanisms of establishment are important for successful establishment. At the population level, hydrochory may increase the effective size and longevity of populations, and control their spatial configuration. Hydrochory is also an important source of species colonizing recruitment‐limited riparian and wetland communities, contributing to maintenance of community species richness. Dispersal by water may even influence community composition in different landscape elements, resulting in landscape‐level patterns. Genetically, hydrochory may reduce spatial aggregation of genetically related individuals, lead to high gene flow among populations, and increase genetic diversity in populations receiving many propagules. Humans have impacted hydrochory in many ways. For example, dams affect hydrochory by reducing peak flows and hence dispersal capacity, altering the timing of dispersal, and by presenting physical barriers to dispersal, with consequences for riverine plant communities. Hydrochory has been inferred to be an important vector for the spread of many invasive species, but there is also the potential for enhancing ecosystem restoration by improving or restoring water dispersal pathways. Climate change may alter the role of hydrochory by modifying the hydrology of water‐bodies as well as conditions for propagule release and plant colonization.  相似文献

  1. The dispersal of aquatic plant propagules is highly facilitated in streams due to flow. As many aquatic plants predominantly spread through vegetative propagules, the specific retention and thus drift distance of dispersed plant fragments largely contribute to the rapid spread along the course of a stream.
  2. We determined fragment retention for four aquatic plant species (Elodea canadensis, Myriophyllum spicatum, Ceratophyllum demersum, Salvinia natans; representing four different common morpho-structural groups) in sections of small to medium-sized German streams with different levels of stream sinuosity.
  3. The number of fragments showed a logistic decline over drift distance. In two small streams, 90% of drifting fragments were retained at distances (D90) of only 5–9 m and 19–70 m, while higher D90 values of 116–903 m and 153–2,367 m were determined for sections of a medium-sized stream. The likelihood of retention thereby decreased significantly with increasing stream size and was reduced in straightened stream sections.
  4. Differences in retention were more strongly related to fragment buoyancy rather than fragment size and morphology. Increasing buoyancy significantly lowered the likelihood of fragment retention over drift distance by a factor of 3–8, whereas contrasting effects were documented for size and morphology of fragments.
  5. The relevance of different obstacles was highly stream section-specific and depended on obstacle abundance, distribution, and the degree of submergence/emergence.
  6. Our findings elucidate the dynamic retention patterns of plant fragments and highlight the strong interplay between extrinsic (stream) and intrinsic (fragment) properties. We conclude that straightened lowland streams of intermediate size promote the rapid dispersal of invasive aquatic plants and are particularly prone to invaders producing large amounts of small and highly buoyant plant fragments. Information on the species-specific fragment colonisation dynamics in the field is further required to improve our understanding of the vegetative dispersal capacity of invasive aquatic plants in stream ecosystems.

Genetic and behavioural divergence among desert spring amphipod populations   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. Random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analyses and behavioural trials were conducted on eleven Hyalella azteca populations and one population of H. montezuma from lakes and springs across northern Arizona, U.S.A. Genetic distances among populations were calculated based on fifty-five RAPD markers.
2. A cluster analysis indicated two genetic lineages among the Hyalella populations. One group consisted of populations inhabiting lakes with submerged vegetation, while a second group consisted of populations that clung to roots of emergent vegetation. Behaviour also diverged between these two groups in laboratory trials: amphipods from the submerged vegetation lineage spent significantly more time swimming than did those from the emergent vegetation lineage.
3. Based on patterns in genetic distance data, it is suggested that a xeric landscape may promote diversity among passively dispersed invertebrates.  相似文献

Restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was used to reconstruct postglacial dispersal routes of arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus in North America. Twelve of 35 restriction enzymes detected polymorphisms among representative populations, revealing two distinct lineages with an estimated nucleotide divergence of 1.32%. Subsequent screening of 869 fish from 54 populations with four diagnostic restriction enzymes showed that these lineages have largely allopatric distributions, suggesting their dispersal from separate northern and eastern glacial refugia. In addition, geographical and genetic structure among eastern populations suggested the existence of a second eastern refuge. Among the three lineages, the most divergent (Arctic) lineage occurred from Alaska east to northern Labrador. Quebec, New Brunswick, and New England were colonized by a second (Laurentian) lineage, and Labrador by a third group. Contact between refugial groups was only detected in two Labrador populations. The Arctic lineage was highly differentiated from eastern North American and European haplotypes, and probably diverged during the early Pleistocene. By contrast, the Laurentian and Labrador groups were similar to Old World charr, suggesting a shared ancestry during the mid-Pleistocene. In addition, the close relationship between Labrador and Laurentian charr indicates their probable divergence during the Wisconsinan glaciation.  相似文献

Dispersal of symbiotic partners by joint propagules is considered as an efficient strategy to maintain successful associations and to circumvent low symbiont availability. Joint dispersal is widespread in diverse symbioses and a particularly common reproductive mode in lichens. We were interested in the implications of joint symbiont dispersal on population genetic structure and investigated patterns of symbiont association in populations of two closely related lichen species in the genus Physconia, with similar range of compatible algal partners. One of the lichen species is characterized by joint dispersal of both symbionts, whereas the other species propagates by meiotic fungal spores alone. The latter species must re-establish the symbiotic stage with appropriate algae sampled from the environment. Both fungal species have specialized on photobionts representing a monophyletic lineage of the algal genus Trebouxia. The results indicate no correlated association of symbiont genotypes in the species with joint symbiont dispersal. We rather show that algal gene diversity in populations of lichenized fungi with different propagation strategies is not necessarily different. The association with algae that differ from the co-dispersed genotypes during the vegetative development of the thalli is the most likely explanation for the observed pattern. Maintenance of symbiotic associations is an option but not a strict consequence of joint symbiont dispersal in lichens.  相似文献

Syneilesis palmata reproduces by both seeds and vegetative propagules (short rhizomes). The latter result in the production of new plants that are larger in size and hence have a higher survival probability and a higher growth rate than seeds. A previous study predicted that the optimal reproductive strategy, in terms of maximizing population growth rate (a fitness measure under no density regulations), was pure vegetative reproduction. However, high resource investment to vegetative propagules can cause local crowding resulting in reduced demographic performances of the plants, because the vegetative propagules of Syneilesis are produced close to one another. We examined, in this situation, the impact of allocating a certain proportion of reproductive resource to seeds with relatively greater capacity for dispersal. We simulated dynamics of hypothetical Syneilesis populations with various reproductive resource allocation balances (from pure seed to pure vegetative reproduction), using a density-dependent matrix model. In the model, it was assumed that plants from vegetative propagules experienced density-dependent reduction in their survival probabilities, but this was not the case for plants originating from seeds. Each allocation strategy was evaluated based on an equilibrium population density, a fitness measure under density-dependent regulations. The optimal reproductive strategy predicted was pure vegetative reproduction. Unrealistic conditions were required for seed reproduction to be favoured, such as the production of seeds one hundred times the normal number per unit resource investment. However, the conditions were fairly relaxed compared with those required in the model where no density effects were incorporated. This indicates that escape from local crowding is likely to be one of the roles of seed production in Syneilesis.  相似文献

The complex topography and climate history of western North America offer a setting where lineage formation, accumulation and migration have led to elevated inter‐ and intraspecific biodiversity in many taxa. Here, we study Ramalina menziesii, an epiphytic lichenized fungus with a range encompassing major ecosystems from Baja California to Alaska to explore the predictions of two hypotheses: (i) that the widespread distribution of R. menziesii is due to a single migration episode from a single lineage and (ii) that the widespread distribution is due to the formation and persistence of multiple lineages structured throughout the species' range. To obtain evidence for these predictions, we first construct a phylogenetic tree and identify multiple lineages structured throughout the species' range – some ancient ones that are localized and other more recent lineages that are widely distributed. Second, we use an isolation with migration model to show that sets of ecoregion populations diverged from each other at different times, demonstrating the importance of historical and current barriers to gene flow. Third, we estimated migration rates among ecoregions and find that Baja California populations are relatively isolated, that inland California ecoregion populations do not send out emigrants and that migration out of California coastal and Pacific Northwest populations into inland California ecoregions is high. Such intraspecific geographical patterns of population persistence and dispersal both contribute to the wide range of this genetically diverse lichen fungus and provide insight into the evolutionary processes that enhance species diversity of the California Floristic Province.  相似文献

Over the past decade, the emergence of anthracnose disease has newly challenged the health of turfgrasses on North American golf courses, resulting in considerable economic loss. The fungus responsible for the outbreaks, Colletotrichum cereale , has also been identified from numerous natural grasses and cereal crops, although disease symptoms are generally absent. Here we utilize phylogenetic and population genetic analyses to determine the role of ecosystem in the advancement of turfgrass anthracnose and assess whether natural grass and/or cereal inhabitants are implicated in the epidemics. Using a four-gene nucleotide data set to diagnose the limits of phylogenetic species and population boundaries, we find that the graminicolous Colletotrichum diverged from a common ancestor into distinct lineages correspondent with host physiology (C3 or C4 photosynthetic pathways). In the C4 lineage, which includes the important cereal pathogens Colletotrichum graminicola , C. sublineolum , C. falcatum , C. eleusines , C. caudatum and several novel species, host specialization predominates, with host-associated lineages corresponding to isolated sibling species. Although the C3 lineage — C. cereale — is comprised of one wide host-range species, it is divided into 10 highly specialized populations corresponding to ecosystem and/or host plant, along with a single generalist population spread across multiple habitat types. Extreme differentiation between the specialized C. cereale populations suggests that asymptomatic nonturfgrass hosts are unlikely reservoirs of infectious disease propagules, but gene flow between the generalist population and the specialized genotypes provides an indirect mechanism for genetic exchange between otherwise isolated populations and ecosystems.  相似文献

The extent and frequency of passive overland dispersal of freshwater invertebrates as well as the relative importance of different dispersal vectors is not well documented. Although anecdotal evidence subscribing the feasibility of individual vectors in various aquatic systems is abundant, dispersal rates have rarely been quantified for different vectors in one study system. Earlier studies also usually investigated dispersal potential rather than actual dispersal rates. In this study we have estimated passive dispersal rates of invertebrate propagules within a cluster of temporary rock pools via water, wind and amphibians in a direct way. Overflows after heavy rains mediated dispersal of a large number of propagules through eroded channels between pools, which were collected in overflow traps. Taking into account model based predictions of overflow frequency, this corresponds with average dispersal rates of 4088 propagules/channel yr?1. Wind dispersal rates as measured by numbers of propagules collected on sticky traps mounted between pool basins were very high (average dispersal rate: 649 propagules m?2 in one month) and were positively related to the proximity of source populations. Finally, invertebrate propagules were also isolated from the faeces of African clawed frogs Xenopus laevis caught from the pools (on average 368 propagules/frog). The combination of short distance wind and overflow dispersal rates likely explain the dominant species sorting and mass effect patterns observed in the metacommunity in a previous study. Amphibian mediated dispersal was much less important as the Xenopus laevis population was small and migrations very rare. Based on our own results and available literature we conclude that both vector and propagule properties determine local passive dispersal dynamics of freshwater invertebrates. Accurate knowledge on rates and vectors of dispersal in natural systems are a prerequisite to increase our understanding of the impact of dispersal on ecology (colonisation, community assembly, coexistence) and evolution (gene flow, local adaptation) in fragmented environments.  相似文献

Higher levels of genetic diversity of river macrophytes are expected in downstream parts because of potential accumulation of various genotypes from upstream sites. We assessed the clonal diversity and spatial genetic structure of fennel pondweed (Potamogeton pectinatus or Stuckenia pectinata) populations with emphasis on the estimation of dispersal via clonal propagules along a river in connection to upstream ponds. We analysed genetic diversity of 354 plant shoots sampled in 2005 and 2006 at three pond and five river sites in the Woluwe river catchment (Belgium). Nine microsatellite DNA markers revealed 88 genets of which 89% occurred in only one site. Clonal propagule dispersal was detected up to 10 km along the river. Few multilocus genotypes were repeatedly present along a major part of the river indicating vegetative spread. Populations of ponds contained a higher amount of clonal diversity, indicating the importance of local seed recruitment. A fine-scaled spatial genetic structure indicated that most seedling recruitment occurred at a distance <5 m in pond populations whereas clones in river sites were unrelated and showed no spatial autocorrelation. The clonal diversity decreased along the river from upstream to downstream due to establishment of few large clones.  相似文献

The aquatic and terrestrial realms differ in many physical properties that not only require specific physiological adaptations but also cause differences in dispersal options. We thus expect that life-history traits related to dispersal and colonization are under selection pressure because freshwater habitats are more isolated and thus more difficult to reach. We compared traits from European databases of three taxonomic groups along the passive–active dispersal gradient: plants (Plantes), snails (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Prosobranchia et Pulmonata) and hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae), all of which have both terrestrial and freshwater species (plants and snails) or early life stages (hoverflies). Aquatic taxa seem to be more successful long-distance dispersers than are terrestrial taxa. Our analysis also revealed lower numbers of seeds or eggs produced in the aquatic habitats. However, aquatic taxa often allocate resources to offspring guarding (vegetative propagules in plants, egg capsules in snails) and breeding-site selection (syrphids). Colonization of the aquatic realm is reinforced by increases in life span (plants), clonal spread (plants), shorter generation times (snails), selfing ability (marginal effect in pulmonate snails) or paedogenesis (two incidences in hoverflies, needs further studies). Probably, the variety of strategies reflects the different evolutionary backgrounds that elicit different combinations of trade-offs, but all traits also might increase invasibility of species.  相似文献

Non-marine aquatic vascular plants generally show broad distributional ranges. Climatic factors seem to have limited effects on their distributions, besides the determination of major disjunctions (tropical–temperate–subarctic). Dispersal should have been frequent enough to assure the quick colonisation of extensive areas following glacial retreat, but dispersal limitation is still apparent in areas separated by geographic barriers. Aquatic vascular plants also show limited taxonomic differentiation and low within-species genetic variation. Variation within populations is particularly low, but variation among populations seems to be relatively high, mainly due to the persistence of long-lived clones. Ecotypic differentiation is often related to factors that constrain clonal reproduction (salinity and ephemeral inundation). Inland aquatic habitats are heterogeneous environments, but this heterogeneity largely occurs at relatively small scales (within waterbodies and among neighbouring ones). They also represent a stressful environment for plants, characterised by low carbon availability, shaded conditions, sediment anoxia, mechanical damage by currents and waves, significant restrictions to sexual reproduction, and sometimes also osmotic stress and limited nutrient supply. I propose that the generality of broad distributions and low differentiation among the inland aquatic flora is best explained by a combination of: (1) selection for stress-tolerant taxa with broad tolerance ranges. (2) The selective advantages provided by clonal growth and multiplication, which increases plant tolerance to stress, genet survivorship and population viability. (3) Long-distance dispersal of sexual propagules and high local dispersal of asexual clones. (4) The generality of broad plastic responses, promoted by the combination of clonal growth, high local dispersal, small-scale spatial heterogeneity and temporal variability.  相似文献
