Brycon nattereri (Ostariophysi: Characiformes: Characidae), a threatened South American freshwater fish, occurs in the Paraná, Tocantins and São Francisco river basins in central Brazil. It is a middle-sized (up to 50 cm SL), omnivorous species, which occurs in swift, clear-water rivers with well-preserved riparian vegetation. Our primary objective was to determine if rates of fluid-phase endocytosis (FPE) were conserved in hepatocytes from organisms acclimated and adapted to different temperatures. To this aim, the fluorescent dye Lucifer yellow was employed to measure FPE at different assay temperatures (AT) in hepatocytes from 5 degrees C- and 20 degrees C-acclimated trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (at 5 and 20 degrees C AT), 22 degrees C- and 35 degrees C-acclimated tilapia, Oreochromis nilotica (at 22 and 35 degrees C AT), and the Sprague-Dawley rat (at 10, 20, and 37 degrees C AT). FPE was also studied in rats fed a long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA)-enriched diet (at 10 degrees C AT). Despite being temperature dependent, endocytic rates (values in pl. cell(-1). h(-1)) in both species of fish were compensated after a period of acclimation. For example, in 20 degrees C-acclimated trout, the rate of endocytosis declined from 1.84 to 1.07 when the AT was reduced from 20 to 5 degrees C; however, after a period of acclimation at 5 degrees C, the rate (at 5 degrees C AT) was largely restored (1.80) and almost perfectly compensated (95%). In tilapia, endocytic rates were also temperature compensated, although only partially (36%). Relatively similar rates obtained at 5 degrees C in 5 degrees C-acclimated trout (1.8), at 20 degrees C in 20 degrees C-acclimated trout (1.84), and at 22 degrees C in 22 degrees C-acclimated tilapia (2.2) suggest that endocytic rates are somewhat conserved in these two species of fish. In contrast, the rate in rat measured at 37 degrees C (16.83) was severalfold greater than in fish at their respective body temperatures. A role for lipids in determining rates of endocytosis was supported by data obtained at 10 degrees C in hepatocytes isolated from rats fed a long-chain PUFA-enriched diet: endocytic rates were higher (5.35 pl. cell(-1). h(-1)) than those of rats fed a standard chow diet (2.33 pl. cell(-1). h(-1)). The conservation of endocytic rates in fish may be related to their ability to conserve other membrane characteristics (i.e., order or phase behavior) by restructuring their membrane lipid composition or by modulating the activities of proteins that regulate endocytosis and membrane traffic, whereas the lack of conservation between fish and rat may be due to differences in metabolic rate. 相似文献

The primary antibody response to aqueous immunization with a low molecular-weight lot of (T,G)-A — L (#420) was studied in congenic pairs of inbred mouse strains. Two new genetic controls were identified, both of which quantitatively regulate the production of IgM anti-(T,G)-A — L antibody. Testing of F1 and F2 progeny demonstrated that one of these genes is linked to the major histocompatibility (H-2) complex, and that high response is dominant over low response. genera, 27 species). As all of the examined morphological characters (meristics, morphometrics, coloration, a patch of gular
scales, and cephalic sensory pores) of the small-sized hototype (74.2 mm SL) agree with those for C. lucius except for slight gaps in predorsal length and interorbital width (subject to allometric changes), the authors concluded
that C. siamensis is a junior synonym of C. lucius (Cuvier in Cuvier and Valenciennes, 1831).

Immunocompetent cells were isolated from spleen of B. himalayanus and studied surface morphology of the three different cell types--(i) plastic adherent; (ii) nylon wool adherent; and (iii) nylon wool non-adherent cells. As revealed by scanning electron microscopy, they resembled the macrophages, B and T cells, respectively. Presence of such cell types indicated that Bufo himalayanus possessed a well-organized immune system. Further work is needed to characterize the functional efficacy of these immunocompetent cells found in B. himalayanus. 相似文献

Aims Desert soils play an important role in the exchange of major greenhouse gas (GHG) between atmosphere and soil. However, many uncertainties existed in understanding of desert soil role, especially in efflux evaluation under a changing environment. Methods We conducted plot-based field study in center of the Gurbantünggüt Desert, Xinjiang, and applied six rates of simulated nitrogen (N) deposition on the plots, i.e. 0 (N0), 0.5 (N0.5), 1.0 (N1), 3.0 (N3), 6.0 (N6) and 24.0 (N24) g·m-2·a-1. The exchange rates of N2O, CH4 and CO2 during two growing seasons were measured for two years after N applications. Important findings The average efflux of two growing seasons from control plots (N0) were 4.8 μg·m-2·h-1, -30.5 μg·m-2·h-1 and 46.7 mg·m-2·h-1 for N2O, CH4 and CO2, respectively. The effluxes varied significantly among seasons. N0, N0.5 and N1 showed similar exchange of N2O in spring and summer, which was relatively higher than in autumn, while the rates of N2O in N6 and N24 were controled by time points of N applications. The uptake of CH4 was relatively higher in both spring and summer, and lower in autumn. Emission of CO2 changed minor from spring to summer, and greatly decreased in autumn in the first measured year. In the second year, the emission patterns were changed by rates of N added. N additions generally stimulated the emission of N2O, while the effects varied in different seasons and years. In addition, no obvious trends were found in the emission factor of N2O. The uptake of CH4 was not significantly affected by N additions. N additions did not change CO2 emissions in the first year, while high N significantly reduced the CO2 emissions in spring and summer of the second year, without affected in autumn. Structure equation model analysis on the factors suggested that N2O, CH4 and CO2 were dominantly affected by the N application rates, soil temperature or moisture and plant density, respectively. The present study aimed to characterize the embryogenesis and larval development of matrinchã (Brycon orthotaenia), through the analysis of egg and larval morphology. Fertilized eggs had a mean diameter of 1.17 mm, with yolk occupying most of the egg (1.06 mm). Embryogenesis lasted for 15 hr at an average temperature of 27°C. At hatching, yolk-sac larvae measured 3.67 mm in mean standard length (SL). Pre-flexion, flexion and post-flexion larva had 5.01, 8.24 and 11.88 mm mean SL, respectively, with significant increases observed particularly in head length, head height, and eye diameter. The yolk persisted in the yolk-sac and pre-flexion stages (5.96 mm SL). The mouth opening could first be observed 13 hr after hatching, and cannibalism was observed 29 hr after hatching in pre-flexion larvae after absorption of the yolk sac; in such cases, the larvae had already developed teeth and a complete digestive tract. For an endangered species such as matrinchã, early life history studies are important because they provide researchers with a better understanding of critical stages of development and thus enhance captive management by rearing and restocking of the species. 相似文献

We provide the first record of the Mayan Cichlid, Mayaheros urophthalmus from South Asia, based on specimens collected from the River Chalakudy in Kerala, India. Genetic analysis of the Indian sample showed close affinity with those from Philippines suggesting their potential South East Asian origin, and introduction through the unmanaged aquarium trade. Ecological plasticity, opportunistic predatory behaviour and eurytopic nature of M. urophthalmus could facilitate colonization in the new environment, unless urgent management strategies are developed and implemented. 相似文献

Summary Heart, ventilation and oxygen consumption rates ofLeiopotherapon unicolor were studied at temperatures ranging from 5 to 35°C, and during progressive hypoxia from 100% to 5% oxygen saturation. Biopotentials recorded from the water surrounding the fish corresponded to ventilation movements, and are thought to originate from the ventilatory musculature. Cardio-respiratory responses to temperature and dissolved oxygen follow the typical teleost pattern, with bradycardia, increased ventilation rate and reduced oxygen consumption occurring during hypoxia. However, ventilation rate did not increase at 15°C and below. Ventilation rate showed a slower response to increasing temperature (normoxic Q10=1.39) than heart rate and oxygen consumption (normoxic Q10=2.85 and 2.38).L. unicolor is unable to survive prolonged hypoxia by utilising anaerobic metabolism, but has a large gill surface area which presumably facilitates oxygen uptake in hypoxic environments. Periodic ventilation during normoxia in restingL. unicolor may improve ventilation efficiency by increasing the oxygen diffusion gradient across the gills.Abbreviations

In viviparous fish, as is illustrated by the example of the pipefish Syngnathus acusimilis (Syngnathidae), unlike fish that spawn their eggs into the environment, there are virtually no differences between populations in meristic characters, which are formed during the embryonic and larval development. The absence of these differences is due to the stability of conditions, specifically temperature, during the egg incubation in the parental organism. The insignificant differences in the external morphology of the pipefish can also be associated with the presence of the bony plates that completely cover the fish body. The peculiarities of the structure and reproductive biology are not conducive to the ecological and geographical intraspecific differentiation of this fish. 相似文献

We developed distribution models for two near-threatened gobiid fishes, Tridentiger barbatus and Tridentiger nudicervicus, based on distribution data and geographic variables in the Ariake Sea, the Yatsushiro Sea, and Suonada Bay. Subsequently, we estimated the potential distribution of both species across all areas of the Seto Inland Sea based on the model predictions. The models indicated high accuracy and demonstrated that both species inhabit shoal and relatively enclosed waters. Predicted potential distribution areas of the two species included all sites with previous records and a few new sites without existing records. 相似文献

Methyl parathion (MP), an organophosphate widely applied in agriculture and aquaculture, induces oxidative stress due to free radical generation and changes in the antioxidant defense system. The antioxidant roles of selenium (Se) were evaluated in Brycon cephalus exposed to 2 mg L(-1) of Folisuper 600 BR (MP commercial formulation - MPc, 600 g L(-1)) for 96 h. Catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione S-transferase (GST), reduced glutathione (GSH) and lipid peroxidation (LPO) levels in the gills, white muscle and liver were evaluated in fish fed on diets containing 0 or 1.5 mg Se kg(-1) for 8 weeks. In fish treated with a Se-free diet, the MPc exposure increased SOD and CAT activities in all tissues. However, the GPx activity decreased in white muscle and gills whereas no alterations were observed in the liver. MPc also increased GST activity in all tissues with a concurrent decrease in GSH levels. LPO values increased in white muscle and gills and did not change in liver after MPc exposure. A Se-supplemented diet reversed these findings, preventing increases in LPO levels and concurrent decreases in GPx activity in gills and white muscle. Similarly, GSH levels were maintained in all tissue after MPc exposure. These results suggest that dietary Se supplementation protects cells against MPc-induced oxidative stress. 相似文献
