The bacterial distribution, and its relationship with climate and environment factors were investigated in the snowcover at Tianshan Number 1 Glacier. The results showed that psychrotrophs were the preponderant bacteria in pit samples, though they were not the dominant species in the new fallen snow. The quantity and diversity of the cultivable bacteria decreased with the passage of time, indicating that the bacterial community acclimatized to low temperature by changing its structure. During this time, the peak number of the cultivable bacteria was associated with dirt layers, indicating that the bacterial input came with dust. Concurrently, the quantity and diversity of the cultivable bacteria showed a trend of variation similar to that shown by the δ18O values and the soluble ion concentrations, indicating that the bacterial distribution was related to both temperature and the amount of dust transported onto the glacier. Phylogentic analyses of 16S rRNA indicated that all the isolates fell into six categories: α-Proteobacteria, β-Proteobacteria, γ-Proteobacteria, Cytophaga-Flavobacterium-Bacteroides (CFB) group bacteria, high G+C gram-positive bacteria, and low G+C gram-positive bacteria. In the snow pit, the abundance of the CFB group bacteria (mainly of the genus Flavobacterium) decreased from 55.5% to 1.49% with age, and fluctuated similar to the ion concentrations and the δ18O value. Meanwhile the α-Proteobacteria (mainly of the genus Brevundimonas) increased from 0.9% to 88.1%, indicating that Brevundimonas was the dominant psychrotroph in the study area, whose abundance varied inversely compared to the above-mentioned chemical properties. All the results suggest that bacterial abundance and diversity vary with climate and the physical chemical microenvironment. The pattern of bacterial distribution could be a biological index for the record of climate and environment change in the Tianshan Number 1 Glacier.  相似文献

Bacterial diversity in the snow over Tibetan Plateau Glaciers   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Bacterial diversity and cell abundance in the snow of the four glaciers (Guoqu, Zadang, East Rongbuk and Palong No. 4) located in different climatic zones of the Tibetan Plateau were investigated through culture-independent molecular analysis of 16S rRNA gene clone library and flow cytometry approaches. Cell abundance ranged from 0.68 × 103 to 720 × 103 cells mL−1, with higher values in the northern glaciers than in the southern ones. Bacterial diversity was unexpectedly high in the snow habitats of the world’s highest plateau, with 15 common genera distributed widely among the glaciers. The bacterial diversity in the snow at different glaciers was related to the surrounding environments. The Guoqu Glacier, to the north near the desert zone and with the lowest temperature, preserved more bacteria closely related to a cold environment and soil than the other glaciers. However, in the Palong No. 4 Glacier located in the south warm region around vegetation, most bacteria were phylogenetically related to plant-associated bacteria.  相似文献

The biological activities of two species of bacteria isolated from soil of cotton fields identified as Bacillus subtilis strain NRC313 (BS NRC313) and Bacillus thuringiensis strain NRC335 (BT NRC335) were evaluated against the third larval instar of the cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.). The different entomopathogenic bacteria of BS NRC313and BT NRC335 contained 10 × 108 cell/ml, and caused mortality of 100 and 97.3% for the above mentioned strains, respectively. Concentrations of 2.5 × 108 to 10 × 108 cell/ml of strains BS NRC313 and BT NRC335 were applied to the larvae: LC50 were 3.3 × 108 and 3.9 × 108 cell/ml respectively. The influence of exposure to toxin concentrations manifested in terms of decreasing the adult emergence and prolongation of the generation period. The percentage of larvae that survived and succeeded to pupate increased by decreasing the concentration. The longevity of adult emergence that resulted from larvae treated with Bacillus subtilis were 6.0 ± 0.51 and 9.0 ± 0.63 days at 5 × 108 and 2.5 × 108 cell/ml, respectively compared with 9.8 ± 0.47 in control. The results indicated that Bacillus subtilis was more potent than Bacillus thuringiensis. Field applications of B. thuringiensis, B. subtilis and Reldan achieved 55.6, 67.4 and 89.4% reduction of the cotton leafworm larvae Spodoptera littoralis in clover plants under field conditions.  相似文献

Increasing usage of nitrogen fertilizer for food production has resulted in severely environmental problems of nutrients enrichment. This study aimed to examine the response of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) to a long-term nitrogen fertilization in Tibetan alpine meadow. The abundance and composition of both AOB and AOA were assessed using quantitative real-time PCR, cloning and sequencing techniques based on amoA gene under different fertilization gradient (0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 g m?2 year?1). Our results showed that, abundances of AOA amoA genes (ranging from 1.48 × 109 to 2.00 × 109 copies per gram of dry soil) were significantly higher than those of AOB amoA genes (1.25 × 107 to 2.62 × 108 copies per gram of dry soil) under fertilization scenario. The abundance of AOB amoA genes increased with increasing nitrogen fertilization, whereas fertilization had little effect on AOA abundance. Sequences of clone libraries of the different treatments revealed that AOB communities were dominated by representatives of Cluster 4, constituting 48.94–64.44% in each clone library. Sequences of Clusters 9, 1 and 2 were prevalent in soils under higher fertilization. All archaeal amoA sequences recovered were affiliated with the soil/sediment clade and marine sediment clade, and no significant difference was observed on the community structure among different fertilization treatments. Variations in the AOB community structure and abundance were linked to ammonium-N and soil pH induced by different fertilization treatments. These results showed that the abundance and structure of the AOB community respond to the fertilization gradient, not AOA.  相似文献

The microbial diversity and abundance in surface snow at different altitudes (5300 and 5504 m above sea level), a moraine lake and a glacial stream in the Yala Glacier on the southern slope of the Himalayas were investigated through a 16S rRNA gene clone library and flow cytometry approaches. Cell abundance in different habitats changed from 1.1 × 104 to 25 × 104 cells mL−1, with the highest abundance in the moraine lake and the lowest abundance in the snow at 5504 m. Microbial communities in the snow were significantly different from those in the moraine lake and stream, although they were similar within snow and within the aquatic habitats. The two snow libraries were both dominated by Cyanobacteria, which accounted for about half of the total, followed by the Alphaproteobacteria and Firmicutes. The moraine lake and stream libraries were dominated by the Bacteroidetes and Betaproteobacteria, followed by the Actinobacteria. The results indicated that snow and water were highly diverse systems even in the same glacier. Microbial communities in the snow on the Yala Glacier were distinctly different from those in the East Rongbuk Glacier on the northern slope of Himalayas. However, microbes in the moraine lakes at two glaciers had similar community features. The snow habitat was easily affected by various environmental factors, while the aquatic habitats were comparatively stable in different glaciers.  相似文献

Magnetically-modified Sphingomonas sp. was prepared using covalent binding of magnetic nanoparticles on to the cell surface. The magnetic modified bacteria were immobilized in the fixed-bed bioreactors (FBR) by internal and external magnetic fields for the biodetoxification of a model organophosphate, parathion: 93 % of substrate (50 mg parathion/l) was hydrolyzed at 0.5 ml/min in internal magnetic field fixed-bed bioreactor. The deactivation rate constants (at 1 ml/min) were 0.97 × 10?3, 1.24 × 10?3 and 4.17 × 10?3 h?1 for immobilized bacteria in external and internal magnetic field fixed-bed bioreactor and FBR, respectively. The deactivation rate constant for immobilized magnetically modified bacteria in external magnetic field fixed-bed bioreactor (EMFFBR) was 77 % lower than that of immobilized cells by entrapping method on porous basalt beads in FBR at 1 ml/min. Immobilized magnetic modified bacteria exhibited maximum enzyme stability in EMFFBR.  相似文献

The Himalayas are water tower for billions of people; however in recent years due to climate change several glaciers of Himalaya are receding or getting extinct which can lead to water scarcity and political tensions. Thus, it requires immediate attention and necessary evaluation of all the environmental parameters which can lead to conservation of Himalayan glaciers. This study is the first attempt to investigate the bacterial diversity from debris-free Changme Khang (CKG) and debris-cover Changme Khangpu (CK) glacier, North Sikkim, India. The abundance of culturable bacteria in CKG glaciers was 1.5?×?104 cells/mL and CK glacier 1.5?×?105 cells/mL. A total of 50 isolates were isolated from both the glacier under aerobic growth condition. The majority of the isolates from both the glaciers were psychrotolerant according to their growth temperature. Optimum growth temperatures of the isolates were between 15 and 20 °C, pH 6–8 and NaCl 0–2%. The phylogenetic studies of 16S RNA gene sequence suggest that, these 21 isolates can be assigned within four phyla/class, i.e., Firmicutes, Beta-proteobacteria, Gamma-proteobacteria and Actinobacteria. The dominant phyla were Firmicutes 71.42% followed by Actinobacteria 14.28%, Alpha-proteobacteria 9.52% and Beta-proteobacteria 4.76%. The isolate Bacillus thuringiensis strain CKG2 showed the highest protease activity (2.24 unit/mL/min). Considering the fast rate at which Himalayan glaciers are melting and availability of limited number of research, there is urgent need to study the microbial communities confined in such environments.  相似文献

Abstract Bacterial abundance and bacterivorous protist abundance and activity were examined in ice-brine and water column communities of a cold temperate Japanese lagoon (Saroma-Ko Lagoon, Hokkaido, 44°N, 144°E), during the late winter phase of ice community development (February–March 1992). Bacterial abundance averaged 6 and 1 × 105 cells ml−1 in the ice-brine and plankton samples, respectively, and generally decreased during the sampling period. Bacterivorous protists, identified based on direct observation of short-term (<1 h) ingested fluorescently labeled bacteria (FLB) in their food vacuoles, were largely dominated by flagellates, mainly cryothecomonad-type and chrysomonad-like cells and small dinoflagellates of the genus Gymnodinium. Bacterivorous ciliates included mainly the prostomatid Urotricha sp., the scuticociliates Uronema and Cyclidium, the choreotrichs Lohmaniella oviformis and Strobilidium, and the hypotrich Euplotes sp. Protist abundance averaged 4 × 103 and 8.1 cells ml−1 in the ice-brine and 0.3 × 103 and 1.2 cells ml−1 in the plankton, for flagellates and ciliates, respectively. In contrast to bacteria, the abundance of protists generally increased throughout the sampling period, indicating predator–prey interactions. Protistan bacterivory, measured from the rate of FLB disappearance over 24 h, averaged 36% (ice) and 24% (plankton) of bacterial standing stock and exhibited the same seasonal pattern as for protist abundance. The calculated specific clearance (range, 2–67 nl protozoa−1 h−1) and ingestion (<1–26 particles protozoa−1 h−1) rates were likely to be minimal estimates and grazing impact may have been higher on occasion. Indications for the dependence of ``bacterivorous protists' on nonbacterial food items were also provided. Although alternative sources of bacterial loss are likely to be of importance, this study provides evidence for the potential of protozoan assemblages as bacterial grazers in both sea ice-brine biota and water column at the southern limit of sea ice in the northern hemisphere. In this study, an aged refuse bioreactor was constructed to remove nitrogen in a mature landfill leachate. The nitrogen removal efficiency and the microbial community composition in the bioreactor were investigated. The results showed that the aged refuse bioreactor removed more than 90 % of total nitrogen in the leachate under the nitrogen loading rate (NLR) of 0.74 g/kg (vs) day, and the total nitrogen removal rate decreased to 62.2 % when NLR increased up to 2.03 g/kg (vs) day. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction results showed that the average cell number of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria in the bioreactor was 1.58?×?108 cells/g, which accounted for 0.41 % of total bacteria. The number of anammox bacteria in the reactor was 1.09?×?108 cells/g, which accounted for 0.27 % of total bacteria. Isotopic 15N tracing experiments showed that nearly 10 % of nitrogen was removed by anammox. High-throughout 454 pyrosequencing revealed that the predominant bacteria in the bioreactor were Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Gemmatimonadetes, including various nitrifiers and denitrifiers with diverse heterotrophic and autotrophic metabolic pathways, supporting that nitrogen was removed through different pathways in this aged refuse bioreactor.  相似文献

Ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) represent an important group of ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms that are able to convert ammonia to nitrite, a function which is crucial for the removal of nitrogen from wastewater. In this study, we investigated the abundance and diversity of AOA in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) which used a biological aerated filter (BAF) as the main processing mode. According to the quantitative PCR results, AOA clearly outnumbered ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) during the whole process. The abundance of AOA amoA genes in the filter layer of BAF was highest with the value varied from 6.32 × 103 to 3.8 × 104 copies/ng DNA. The highest abundance of AOB amoA genes was 1.32 × 102 copies/ng DNA, recorded in the effluent of the ACTIFLO® settling tank. The ratios of AOA/AOB in the WWTP were maintained at two or three orders of magnitude. Most AOA obtained from the WWTP fell within the Nitrosopumilus cluster. The abundance of AOA and AOB was significantly correlated with ammonium nitrogen concentrations and pH value. The community structure of AOA was significantly influenced by dissolved oxygen concentrations, pH value and chemical oxygen demand.  相似文献

Seasonal variation, horizontal and vertical distribution, and cell size of nanoflagellates, together with physico-chemical and biological factors, were studied in the northern South China Sea (SCS). It was found that nanoflagellate abundance ranged from 0.157 × 103 to 9.193 × 103 cells/ml (with a mean of 0.891 × 103) in winter (February, 2004), while it ranged from 0.107 × 103 to 5.417 × 103 cells/ml (with a mean of 0.599 × 103) in summer (July, 2004). Nanoflagellates were more abundant in winter than summer in offshore regions, showing an unique seasonal pattern in this subtropical marginal sea. The abundance of nanoflagellates decreased from the estuary to the offshore region. Vertical distribution of nanoflagellates coupled well with that of bacteria and Chl a. The small size fraction of less than 5 μm dominated the nanoflagellate populations. Wind-driven mixing, eddies, availability of nutrients as well as Chl a and abundance of picoplankton seemed to be the major controlling factors for the spatial distribution and seasonal variation of nanoflagellates in the study area. Ciliates are important consumers of pico- and nano-sized producers, are nutrient regenerators, and are an important food source for metazoans. To date, ecological research on ciliates has focused on marine ecosystems rather than on glacier habitats. This paper presents the first major study on ciliates from the Ecology Glacier (South Shetland Islands, Antarctica). The objective of the study was to investigate the structure and spatial distribution of ciliate communities and to identify the environmental factors determining the structure of the assemblages. Microbial communities were collected from three habitats: surface snow, cryoconite holes, and glacier streams. Sampling was carried out every 3–4 days from January 17 to February 24, 2012. A total of 18 ciliate taxa were identified. The species richness, abundance, and biomass of protozoa differed significantly between the stations studied with the lowest numbers in streams on the glacier surface and the highest numbers in cryoconite holes. The RDA performed to specify the direct relationships between the abundance of ciliate taxa and environmental variables showed obvious differences between studied habitats. The analysis showed that all variables together explained 62.4 % of total variance. However, variables that significantly explained the variance in ciliate communities in cryoconite holes, snow, and surface streams were temperature, conductivity, and total nitrogen. Further research is required to explain the impact of biotic factors influencing the presence of ciliates, including the abundance of bacteria, microalgae, and small Metazoa.  相似文献

A study on the bacterioplankton of Conceição Lagoon (27°34′ S–48°27′ W), Southern Brazil, was carried out in July 2005 (austral winter) and January 2006 (austral summer) to characterize the bacterial spatiotemporal distribution and to determine the heterotrophic and photoautotrophic bacterial dominance in hypoxic/oxic stratified waters. Bacterial abundance increased significantly (p?5 (winter) to 3.21?×?106 cells mL?1 (summer), heterotrophic coccus/rod-shaped (HCR) cells from 7.00?×?104 to 3.60?×?106 cells mL?1, and heterotrophic filamentous (HF) bacteria from 2.90?×?103 to 2.74?×?105 cells mL?1. Bacterial biovolumes also increased in summer with mean biovolumes of CCY ranging from 0.38 to 1.37 μm3, HCR cells from 0.31 to 1.12 μm3, and HF from 3.32 to 11.34 μm3. Principal component analysis showed that salinity, temperature, and light were the abiotic factors that better explained the temporal variability of bacterial assemblages. Bacterial heterotrophy dominated in the lagoon, excepted by the southern and part of central sector in January 2006, when autotrophic-dominated microbial community occurred. Spatially, bacterial assemblages were influenced by nutrient gradient, oxygen, and salinity with a positive relationship between biovolumes and nutrients and a negative relationship between abundance of coccus cyanobacteria and nutrients. area revealed a singular temporal pattern with hypoxic bottom waters in winter and oxygen-rich waters appearing in summer related with the availability of light and predominant microbes. Thus, oxygen consumption/production is likely to be regulated by the amount of light reaching the bottom, stimulating the production of oxygen by oxygenic phototrophs.  相似文献

We assessed the seasonal abundance and distribution of Vibrio species as well as some selected environmental parameters in the treated effluents of two wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), one each located in a suburban and urban community of Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Vibrio population density ranged from 2.1×105 to 4.36×104 CFU/ml in the suburban community and from 2.80×105 to 1.80×105 CFU/ml in the urban community. Vibrio species associated with 180 μ, 60 μ, and 20 μ plankton sizes were observed at densities of 0–136×103 CFU/ml, 0–8.40×102 CFU/ml, and 0–6.80×102 CFU/ml, respectively at the suburban community’s WWTP. In the urban community, observed densities of culturable Vibrio were 0–2.80×102 CFU/ml (180 μ), 0–6.60×102 CFU/ml (60 μm), and 0–1.80× 103 CFU/ml (20 μm). The abundance of free-living Vibrio species ranged from 0 to 1.0×102 and 1.0×103 CFU/ml in the suburban and urban communities’ WWTPs, respectively. Molecular confirmation of the presumptive Vibrio isolates revealed the presence of V. fluvialis (41.38%), V. vulnificus (34.48%), and V. parahaemolyticus (24.14%) in the suburban community effluents. In the urban community molecular confirmation revealed that the same species were present at slightly different percentages, V. fluvialis (40%), V. vulnificus (36%), and V. parahaemolyticus (24%). There was no significant correlation between Vibrio abundance and season, either as free-living or plankton-associated entities, but Vibrio species abundance was positively correlated with temperature (r=0.565; p<0.01), salinity, and dissolved oxygen (p<0.05). Turbidity and pH showed significant seasonal variation (p<0.05) across the seasons in both locations. This study underscores the potential of WWTPs to be sources of Vibrio pathogens in the watershed of suburban and urban communities in South Africa.  相似文献

The dynamics of cyanophage-like particles and algicidal bacteria that infect the bloom-forming cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa was followed in a hyper-eutrophic pond from September 1998 to August 1999. The densities of M. aeruginosa ranged between 4.0 × 105 and 1.9 × 107 cells ml−1, whereas those of algicidal bacteria were between 4.0 and 5.1 × 102 plaque-forming units (PFU) ml−1 and those of cyanophage-like particles were between <5.0 × 102 and 7.1 × 103 PFU ml−1. A significant relationship was found between the densities of algicidal bacteria and M. aeruginosa (r = 0.81, n = 69, P < 0.001), suggesting that the dynamics of the algicidal bacteria may regulate the abundance of M. aeruginosa. Occasional peaks of density of cyanophage-like particles were detected in October, June, and August, when sharp declines in M. aeruginosa cell densities were also observed. The densities of cyanophage-like particles became undetectable when the abundance of M. aeruginosa was low, suggesting the density-dependent infection of M. aeruginosa by cyanophage-like particles. Thus, we suggest that infections of both algicidal bacteria and cyanophage-like particles are important biological agents that decompose blooms of M. aeruginosa in freshwater environments. Nitrification plays a significant role in the global nitrogen cycle, and this concept has been challenged with the discovery of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) in the environment. In this paper, the vertical variations of the diversity and abundance of AOA in the hyporheic zone of the Fuyang River in North China were investigated by molecular techniques, including clone libraries, phylogenetic analysis and real-time polymerase chain reaction. The archaeal amoA gene was detected in all sediments along the profile, and all AOA fell within marine group 1.1a and soil group1.1b of the Thaumarchaeota phylum, with the latter being the dominant type. The diversity of AOA decreased with the sediment depth, and there was a shift in AOA community between top-sediments (0–5 cm) and sub-sediments (5–70 cm). The abundance of the archaeal amoA gene (1.48 × 107 to 5.50 × 107 copies g?1 dry sediment) was higher than that of the bacterial amoA gene (4.01 × 104 to 1.75 × 10copies g?1 dry sediment) in sub-sediments, resulting in a log10 ratio of AOA to ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) from 2.27 to 2.69, whereas AOB outnumbered AOA in top-sediments with a low log10 ratio of (?0.24). The variations in the AOA community were primarily attributed to the combined effect of the nutrients (ammonium-N, nitrate-N and total organic carbon) and oxygen in sediments. Ammonium-N was the major factor influencing the relative abundance of AOA and AOB, although other factors, such as total organic carbon, were involved. This study helps elucidate the roles of AOA and AOB in the nitrogen cycling of hyporheic zone.  相似文献

Planktonic heterotrophic bacteria in lakes utilize the labile fraction of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), although information about seasonal changes in labile DOC in hypertrophic lakes in terms of absolute amount and relative proportion of the total DOC is still limited. We conducted DOC decomposition experiments using GF/F filtrates in water samples from hypertrophic Furuike Pond, together with monitoring of DOC concentration and bacterial abundance in water samples from the pond, to examine seasonal changes in the amount of labile DOC and growth of bacteria on labile DOC. DOC concentrations fluctuated between 2.7 and 11 mg C l−1, and bacterial abundance fluctuated between 1.5 × 106 and 1.0 × 108 cells ml−1. In the DOC decomposition experiment when grazers of bacteria were removed, small portions of DOC (18% ± 12%) were labile for decomposition by bacteria, and the growth yield of bacteria on labile DOC ranged between 3.3% and 19%. Furthermore, addition of nitrogen to water samples enhanced bacterial growth. Thus, not only labile DOC but also nitrogen limited bacterial growth in the pond. Considering the results in the present study together with those of previous studies, bacterial abundance in Furuike Pond is subjected to bottom-up control, such as by limitation of DOC and nitrogen throughout the year, although top-down control of bacterial abundance such as by grazing is seasonally important. A total of 12 samples were collected from the Tengchong geothermal areas of Yunnan, China, with the goal to assess the arsenite (AsIII) oxidation potential of the extant microbial communities as inferred by the abundance and diversity of the AsIII oxidase large subunit gene aioA relative to geochemical context. Arsenic concentrations were higher (on average 251.68 μg/L) in neutral or alkaline springs than in acidic springs (on average 30.88 μg/L). aioA abundance ranged from 1.63 × 101 to 7.08 × 103 per ng of DNA and positively correlated with sulfide and the ratios of arsenate (AsV):total dissolved arsenic (AsTot). Based on qPCR estimates of bacterial and archaeal 16S rRNA gene abundance, aioA-harboring organisms comprised as much as ~15 % of the total community. Phylogenetically, the major aioA sequences (270 total) in the acidic hot springs (pH 3.3–4.4) were affiliated with Aquificales and Rhizobiales, while those in neutral or alkaline springs (pH 6.6–9.1) were inferred to be primarily bacteria related to Thermales and Burkholderiales. Interestingly, aioA abundance at one site greatly exceeded bacterial 16S rRNA gene abundance, suggesting these aioA genes were archaeal even though phylogenetically these aioA sequences were most similar to the Aquificales. In summary, this study described novel aioA sequences in geothermal features geographically far removed from those in the heavily studied Yellowstone geothermal complex.  相似文献

We describe the climatology, hydrology and biogeochemistry of an extreme nitrogen deposition event that occurred in the highly glacierised environment of the European High Arctic during June 1999. Meteorological analysis, three-dimensional air mass trajectories and a 3D transport model show that blocking high pressures over Scandinavia and the rapid advection of western European pollution toward Svalbard were sufficient to cause the most concentrated (1.15 ppm NO3–N and 1.20 ppm NH4–N), high magnitude (total 26 mm and up to 2.4 mm h?1 at 30 m above sea level) nitrogen deposition event on record in this sensitive, high Arctic environment (78.91° N, 11.93° E). Since the event occurred when much of the catchment remained frozen or under snow cover, microbial utilisation of nitrogen within snowpacks and perennially unfrozen subglacial sediments, rather than soils, were mostly responsible for reducing N export. The rainfall event occurred long before the annual subglacial outburst flood and so prolonged (ca. 10 day) water storage at the glacier bed further enhanced the microbial assimilation. When the subglacial outburst eventually occurred, high runoff and concentrations of NO3 ? (but not NH4 +) returned in the downstream rivers. Assimilation accounted for between 53 and 72% of the total inorganic nitrogen deposited during the event, but the annual NO3 ? and NH4 + runoff yields were still enhanced by up to 5 and 40 times respectively. Episodic atmospheric inputs of reactive nitrogen can therefore directly influence the biogeochemical functioning of High Arctic catchments, even when microbial activity takes place beneath a glacier at a time when terrestrial soil ecosystems remain frozen and unresponsive.  相似文献
