The abundant deposits of spherical iron-manganese concretions in the Gulf of Finland are colonized by bacteria in vast numbers. Communities on the surface and in the porous interior have formed two separate clusters, in accordance with their genetic differences. The overall bacterial community in the concretions was highly diverse, representing 12 phyla. Half of the bacteria were affiliated with the most common classes of Proteobacteria, while a third of the bacteria were unclassified. Cloned 16S rRNA-gene sequences of the concretion bacteria showed high scores for similarity to the sequences obtained from sea sediments, metal-rich environments, and ocean crust. The clone library of native concretions was not dominated by known Fe- and Mn-oxidizing species. Known Mn-oxidizing bacteria Sphingomonas, Pseudomonas, and Bacillus were enriched in experiments with Mn2+-containing liquid media, whereas Prosthecobacter (Verrucomicrobia) and Rheinheimera were enriched in semisolid media possibly better simulating the natural conditions in the concretions. In a corresponding experiment, the Fe2+-oxygen gradient favored the enrichment of Shewanella baltica and Thalassolituus oleivorans, which are known to reduce Fe and to degrade petroleum hydrocarbons, respectively. An individual spherical concretion forms a microcosm for a diverse microbial community having potential to oxidize Fe and Mn as shown in cultivation experiments. Therefore, bacteria may significantly affect the formation of the concretions in the Gulf of Finland.  相似文献

In search for sea ice bacteria and their phages from the Baltic Sea ice, two ice samples were collected from land-fast ice in a south-west Finland coastal site in February and March 2011. Bacteria were isolated from the melted sea ice samples and phages were screened from the same samples for 43 purified isolates. Plaque-producing phages were found for 15 bacterial isolates at 3 °C. Ten phage isolates were successfully plaque purified and eight of them were chosen for particle purification to analyze their morphology and structural proteins. Phage 1/32 infecting an isolate affiliated to phylum Bacteroidetes (Flavobacterium sp.) is a siphovirus and six phages infecting isolates affiliated to γ-Proteobacteria (Shewanella sp.) hosts were myoviruses. Cross titrations between the hosts showed that all studied phages are host specific. Phage solutions, host growth and phage infection were tested in different temperatures revealing phage temperature tolerance up to 45 °C, whereas phage infection was in most of the cases retarded above 15 °C. This study is the first to report isolation and cultivation of ice bacteria and cold-active phages from the Baltic Sea ice.  相似文献

Cormorants and other wildlife populations have come in real or perceived conflicts with humans over exploited fish stocks. From gut contents of cormorants, and using an extension of the Catch equation, we estimated the degree of short term competition between great cormorants and coastal fisheries in two areas along the Swedish Baltic Sea. Cormorants consumed 10 and 44%, in respective area, of the fish biomass of six fish species harvested by humans; eel, flounder, herring, perch, pike, and whitefish. On average, cormorants consumed smaller individuals than harvested in fisheries. But for perch, cod and flounder, cormorants consumed harvestable sized fish corresponding >20% of human catches. Our competition model estimated the direct decrease in fisheries catches due to cormorant predation to be <10% for all species except flounder (>30%) and perch (2–20%). When also including the indirect effects of cormorant predation on smaller fish that never reached harvestable size, the estimated decrease in fisheries catches at least doubled for perch (13–34%) and pike (8–19%). Despite large uncertainties, our model indicates that cormorants may locally have a direct impact on human catches of at least flounder, and when incorporating indirect effects also on perch and pike. The study indicates that the degree of competition between cormorants and humans varies substantially between areas. We also included economical values in the model and concluded that for the commercially most important species, eel and cod, the estimated economic impact of cormorants on fisheries was low.  相似文献

Substantial ecological changes occurred in the 1970s in the Northern Baltic during a temporary period of low salinity (S). This period was preceded by an episodic increase in the rainfall over the Baltic Sea watershed area. Several climate models, both global and regional, project an increase in the runoff of the Northern latitudes due to proceeding climate change. The aim of this study is to model, firstly, the effects on Baltic Sea salinity of increased runoff due to projected global change and, secondly, the effects of salinity change on the distribution of marine species. The results suggest a critical shift in the S range 5–7, which is a threshold for both freshwater and marine species distributions and diversity. We discuss several topics emphasizing future monitoring, modelling, and fisheries research. Environmental monitoring and modelling are investigated because the developing alternative ecosystems do not necessarily show the same relations to environment quality factors as the retiring ones. An important corollary is that the observed and modelled S changes considered together with species’ ranges indicate what may appear under a future climate. Consequences could include a shift in distribution areas of marine benthic foundation species and some 40–50 other species, affiliated to these. This change would extend over hundreds of kilometres, in the Baltic Sea and the adjacent North Sea areas. Potential cascading effects, in coastal ecology, fish ecology and fisheries would be extensive, and point out the necessity to develop further the “ecosystem approach in the environmental monitoring”.  相似文献

We have studied the distribution and community composition of denitrifying bacteria in the stratified water column and at the sediment–water interface in lakes Plußsee and Schöhsee, and a near-shore site in the Baltic Sea in Germany. Although environmental changes induced by the stratification of the water column in marine environments are known to affect specific populations of denitrifying bacteria, little information is available for stratified freshwater lakes and brackish water. The aim of the present study was to fill this gap and to demonstrate specific distribution patterns of denitrifying bacteria in specific aquatic habitats using two functional markers for the nitrite reductase (nirK and nirS genes) as a proxy for the communities. The leading question to be answered was whether communities containing the genes nirK and nirS have similar, identical, or different distribution patterns, and occupy the same or different ecological niches. The genes nirK and nirS were analyzed by PCR amplification with specific primers followed by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) and by cloning and sequence analysis. Overall, nirS-denitrifiers were more diverse than nirK-denitrifiers. Denitrifying communities in sediments were clearly different from those in the water column in all aquatic systems, regardless of the gene analyzed. A differential distribution of denitrifying assemblages was observed for each particular site. In the Baltic Sea and Lake Plußsee, nirK-denitrifiers were more diverse throughout the water column, while nirS-denitrifiers were more diverse in the sediment. In Lake Schöhsee, nirS-denitrifiers showed high diversity across the whole water body. Habitat-specific clusters of nirS sequences were observed for the freshwater lakes, while nirK sequences from both freshwater lakes and the Baltic Sea were found in common phylogenetic clusters. These results demonstrated differences in the distribution of bacteria containing nirS and those containing nirK indicating that both types of denitrifiers apparently occupy different ecological niches.  相似文献

In this study, 11 bacteria isolated from Tapis crude oil–contaminated sites were identified by using biochemical tests and 16S rDNA gene sequencing. Their abilities to biodegrade Tapis crude oil was determined by gas chromatography before they were further screened for biosurfactant activity by employing qualitative (blood agar hemolysis, microplate assay, drop-collapse test), semiquantitative (emulsification formation), and quantitative (surface tension measurement) methods. Four isolates, namely, Acinetobacter baumanii UKMP-12T, Pseudomonas aeruginosa UKMP-14T, Rhodococcus sp. UKMP-5T, and Rhodococcus sp. UKMP-7T, exhibited high percentages in total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) degradation. A strong correlation between the emulsification index (E 24) and surface tension measurement (r s = +.866) as shown by Spearman rank correlation analysis suggested that these two methods were more reliable to predict biosurfactant activity. The TPH removal was also positively correlated to the ability of bacterial isolates to reduce the surface tension of growth medium, as revealed by Pearson correlation test (rp = +.886). In conclusion, not all the biosurfactant detection protocols employed were effective. Nevertheless, the measurement of surface tension and E 24 determination provided a rather rapid, easy, reproducible, and accurate result in identifying bacteria with biosurfactant-producing ability.  相似文献

Two bacterial strains capable of degrading polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were isolated from the crude oil exploration bore well sludge and identified by 16s rRNA gene sequencing as Pseudomonas stutzeri and Bacillus subtilis. The bacterial strains Pseudomonas stutzeri and Bacillus subtilis were able to degrade 95.1% and 99.4% of naphthalene (100 mg L?1) and 99.5% and 94.6% of anthracene (50 mg L?1), respectively, as a sole carbon and energy source in the liquid phase within a period of 6 days. The specific growth rate was determined for both the species and found to be 0.169 and 0.124 day?1.  相似文献

In the past years, late summer blooms of the bioluminescent dinoflagellate Alexandrium ostenfeldii have become a recurrent phenomenon in coastal waters of the central and Northern Baltic Sea. This paper reports exceptionally high cell concentrations (105 to 106 cells L?1) of the species found during bioluminescent blooms in 2003 and 2004 in a shallow embayment of the Åland archipelago at the SW coast of Finland. Clonal cultures were established for morphological, molecular, toxicological and ecophysiological investigations to characterize the Finnish populations and compare them to other global A. ostenfeldii isolates. The Finnish isolates exhibited typical morphological features of A. ostenfeldii such as large size, a prominent ventral pore and an orthogonally bent first apical plate. However, unambiguous differentiation from closely related Alexandrium peruvianum was difficult due to considerable variation of sulcal anterior plate shapes. The Finnish strains were genetically distinct from other isolates of the species, but phylogenetic analyses revealed a close relationship to isolates from southern England and an A. peruvianum morphotype from the Spanish Mediterranean. Together these isolates formed a distinct clade which was separated from a clade containing other Northern European, North American and New Zealand populations. Toxin analyses confirmed the presence of the PSP toxins GTX2, GTX3 and STX in both Finnish isolates with GTX3 being the dominant toxin. Total relative PSP toxin contents were moderate, ranging from approximately 6 to 15 fmol cell?1 at local salinities of 5 and 10 psu, respectively. Spirolides were not detected. Salinity tolerance experiments showed that the Finnish isolates were well adapted to grow at the low salinities of the Baltic Sea. With a salinity range of approximately 6 to 20–25 psu, Baltic populations are physiologically distinct from their marine relatives. Vigorous production of different cyst types in the cultures suggest that cysts may play a crucial role in the survival and retainment of A. ostenfeldii populations in the Baltic Sea.  相似文献

A large-scale spatial (52 sampling stations in two areas; one previously affected by numerous sources of enrichment, and one pristine area used as a standard reference for coastal monitoring) and temporal (1972-1989) analysis of hydrography and benthic macrofauna in the archipelago waters of Åland, northern Baltic Sea, revealed significant changes of the ecosystem. The nutrient levels exceeded the criteria for eutrophicated waters at all stations, and the benthic macrofauna showed significant alterations in all parameters analyzed. In the area previously (1972-73) disturbed, reduced complexity in terms of diversity and evenness (i.e. functional responses) were recorded, whereas the changes in the previously undisturbed area are classified as structural. The main conclusions are that (a) no truly “natural” coastal reference areas can be found in the northern Baltic, and (b) the importance of the local effluents will add to the large-scale effects of eutrophication.  相似文献

Phytoremediation is a nondestructive, cost-effective in-situ technology to clean up contaminated soils. In the case of contamination with petroleum hydrocarbons, plants enhance microbial degradation of the contaminant in the rhizosphere. The potential of this technology for the tropics should be high due to prevailing climatic conditions favoring plant growth and stimulating microbial activity. Investigations of the potential of tropical plants for phytoremediation, however, are scarce. The present work studied two grasses and six legumes from the eastern savannah of Venezuela on their reaction to crude oil contamination in soil. Results shall help to identify plants with a potential for phytoremediation and subsequent studies. Seedling emergence and biomass production were determined for plants growing in soil contaminated with 0%, 3%, and 5% heavy crude oil. Contamination had, in general, a tendential but not significant negative influence on seedling emergence. Dry matter production was reduced by only a few percent to up to 85%. Furthermore, in some legumes inhibition of nodulation was observed. The grass Brachiaria brizantha and the legumes Centrosema brasilianum and Calopogonium mucunoides are promising for phytoremediation because in contaminated soil they combined high seedling emergence with least affected biomass production. Since they are cultivated forage/soil cover species also in other regions of the tropics, their potential for phytoremediation of petroleum contaminated soils extends beyond Venezuela.  相似文献

Triazine-2-14C metsulfuron–methyl is a selective, systemic sulfonylurea herbicide. Degradation studies in soils are essential for the evaluation of the persistence of pesticides and their breakdown products. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the degradation of triazine-2-14C metsulfuron–methyl in soil under laboratory conditions. A High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC) equipped with an UV detector and an on-line radio-chemical detector, plus a Supelco Discovery column (250 x 4.6 mm, 5 μm), and PRP–1 column (305 x 7.0 mm, 10 μm) was used for the HPLC analysis. The radioactivity was determined by a Liquid Scintillation Counter (LSC) in scintillation fluid. The soil used was both sterilized and non-sterilized in order to observe the involvement of soil microbes. The estimated DT50 and DT90 values of metsulfuron-methyl in a non-sterile system were observed to be 13 and 44 days, whereas in sterilized soil, the DT50 and DT90 were 31 and 70 days, respectively. The principal degradation product after 60 days was CO2. The higher cumulative amount of 14CO2 in 14C- triazine in the non-sterilized soil compared to that in the sterile system suggests that biological degradation by soil micro-organisms significantly contributes to the dissipation of the compound. The major routes of degradation were O-demethylation, sulfonylurea bridge cleavage and the triazine “ring-opened.”  相似文献

Production parameters for bacterioplankton were assessed during the spring–summer period in the western parts of the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea, as well as in northwestern Pacific Ocean. The lowest values of bacterial production were observed in early June during the spring phytoplankton bloom (0.08 mg C day–1 m–3), while the maximum values (up to 55 mg C day–1 m–3) occurred in late July?early August, 1.5 to 2 months after the bloom. The concentration of dissolved organic matter, the substrate for bacterioplankton, was assessed using satellite data. The ratio between bacterial and primary production in the surface samples varied from 0.5% at the peak of phytoplankton bloom to 180% at the peak of bacterioplankton development.  相似文献

Metacercariae of the genus Diplostomum dwelling in the retina of perch Perca fluviatilis and the lens of roach Rutilus rutilus were identified on the basis of adults obtained by feeding various piscivorous birds of the families Laridae, Anatidae and Phasianidae with metacercariae on an experimental basis. Both morphological studies of the metacercariae and adults obtained from the intestine of the infected birds, as well as the suitability in these hosts, indicated that we were dealing with two different species of Diplostomum. The perch form was recognised as D. baeri Dubois, 1937. Although metacercariae of this species matured both in herring gull Larus argentatus and common tern Sterna hirundo, the principal final host seemed to be goosanders Mergus merganser. In contrast, the lens form in roach was identified as D. spathaceum (Rudolphi, 1819) and it seemed to be restricted to birds of the family Laridae. These experimental results agree with parasitological findings from birds infected in the wild.  相似文献

In summer-autumn of 2003–2004, the ichthyoplankton of the Sea of Okhotsk comprised 35 species. In this period the most widely distributed and numerous were larvae of the lord Hemilepidotus gilberti, the Pacific stout sand lance Ammodytes hexapterus, and the Sakhalin dab Limanda sakhalinensis. The maximum catches of fish larvae were attributed to coastal waters off eastern Sakhalin and to the shelf of the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk. In November of 2003, the ichthyoplankton of the Sea of Japan was represented by fish larvae belonging mainly to the boreal ichthyocomplex. The catches consisted predominantly of larvae of the arabesque greenling Pleurogrammus azonus, the ronquil Bathymaster derjugini, and the rockfish Sebastes owstoni. Fish larvae and fry in the northwestern part of the Sea of Japan were caught principally within 43°–45° N and 137°–139° E above the depth 1500–2000 m. The food spectrum of fish larvae in the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan comprised over 20 plankters of various size belonging to seven taxa. Irrespective of fish species, the food items common of all fish were copepods Pseudocalanus minutus and Oithona similis. The daily rations were calculated for mass species (Hemilepidotus gilberti, Ammodytes hexapterus, Hexagrammos stelleri, Pleurogrammus azonus, Bathymaster derjugini, and Sebastes owstoni). The larvae of all considered species in the Sea of Japan and in the Sea of Okhotsk fed predominantly in the light period of the day.  相似文献

In this study we determined oil degradation rates in the North Sea under most natural conditions. We used the heavy fuel oil, Bunker C, the major oil pollutant of the North Sea, as the model oil. Experiments were conducted in closed systems with water sampled during winter and repeated under identical conditions with water collected during summer. No nitrogen or phosphorous was added and conditions were chosen such that neither oxygen nor nutrients, present in the water, would become limiting during the experiments. We detected a fourfold increased degradation rate for water samples taken in summer (18°C water temperature) as compared to water sampled in winter (4°C water temperature). Under the assumption that biodegradation of oil can be regarded as a Michaelis-Menten type kinetic reaction, the kinectic constants Vmax and KM were determined for oil biodegradation at 4°C and 18°C. At both temperatures KM was about 40 ppm, whereas Vmax was 3–4 times higher at 18°C. From both Vmax and the results of fermentation studies, we determined the maximum rates of Bunker C oil degradation in the North Sea as ∼20 g m−3a−1 at 4°C in winter and 60–80 g m−3a−1 at 18°C in summer. Furthermore, while over 25% of the oil was degraded within 6 weeks in summer, only 6.6% of the oil was degraded in winter. A higher incubation temperature in winter (18°C) increased both the rate and the percentage of oil degraded, but degradation did not reach the level obtained during the summer. While these data reflect the oxidation only of the hydrocarbons, we conducted experiments directly in the open sea to determine the contribution of abiotic factors to oil removal. Approximately 42% of the oil was lost within 6 weeks under these conditions in summer and 65% in winter. However, GC-MS analysis of the recovered oil showed no significant change in the alkane pattern that would indicate enhanced degradation. Thus, mainly abiotic factors such as erosion and dispersion rather than degradation were responsible for enhanced oil removal. Especially the high loss during winter can be attributed to frequent storms resulting in greater dispersion. In conclusion, the higher oil degrading potential of the microbial population in the North Sea was represented by a four times faster oil degradation during the summer. In-situ experiments showed that abiotic factors can have an equal (summer) or even higher (winter) impact on oil removal.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that reservoirs with low water residence time and autochthonous production influence river biogeochemistry in eutrophied river systems draining cultivated watersheds. The effect of a single artificial water reservoir and consecutive reservoirs on silica (Si) river fluxes is exemplified by the moderately dammed Vistula River and the heavily regulated Daugava River that are compared with the practically undammed Oder River. The sum of the discharge weighted annual mean biogenic silica (BSi) and dissolved silicate (DSi) concentrations in the rivers Oder, Vistula and Daugava were about 160 μ M (40 + 120 μ M), 150 μ M (20 + 130 μ M) and 88 μ M (6 + 82 μ M), respectively. Assuming BSi and DSi concentrations as observed in the Oder River as typical for eutrophied but undammed rivers, complete trapping of this BSi could have lowered Si fluxes to the Baltic Sea from rivers with cultivated watersheds by 25%. The superimposed effect of hydrological alterations on reduced Si land–sea fluxes is demonstrated by studies in the boreal/subarctic and oligotrophic rivers Kalixälven and Lueälven. The DSi yield of the heavily dammed Luleälven (793 kg km?2 yr?1) constituted only 63% of that was found in the unregulated Kalixälven (1261 kg km?2 yr?1), despite the specific runoff of the Luleälven (672 mm m?2 yr?1) being 19% higher than that of theKalixälven (563 mm m?2 yr?1); runoff normalized DSi yield of the former, regulated watershed, was only half the DSi yield of the latter, unperturbed watershed. Based on these findings, it is hypothesized here that perturbed surface water–groundwater interactions are the major reasons for the reduced annual fluctuations in DSi concentrations as also seen in the heavily dammed and eutrophic river systems such as the Daugava and Danube.  相似文献
