In early developmental stages of Erpobdella octoculata two pairs of transitory nephridia occur which degenerate during the formation of the body segments. Because in the ground pattern of Annelida the first nephridia formed during ontogenesis are protonephridia, it can be assumed that the transitory nephridia of E. octoculata are homologous to the larval protonephridia (head kidneys) of Polychaeta. To test this hypothesis two cryptolarvae of E. octoculata were investigated ultrastructurally. Both pairs of transitory nephridia are serially arranged to either side of the midgut vestigium. Each organ consists of a coiled duct that opens separately to the exterior by an intraepidermal nephridiopore cell. The duct is percellular and formed by seventeen cells. Adluminal adherens and septate junctions connect all duct cells; the most proximal duct cell completely encloses the terminal end of the duct lumen. A filtration structure characteristic for protonephridia is lacking. Additionally, the entire organ lacks an inner ciliation. Morphologically and ultrastructurally the transitory nephridia of E. octoculata show far reaching congruencies with the segmental metanephridia in different species of the Hirudinea. These congruencies support the assumption that formation of transitory nephridia and definitive metanephridia in Hirudinea depends on the same genetic information. The same inherited information is assumed to cause the development of larval head kidneys and subsequently formed nephridia in different species of the Polychaeta. Thus, the presumed identical fate of a segmentally repeated nephridial anlage supports the hypothesis of a homology between the transitory nephridia in Hirudinea species and the protonephridial head kidneys in the ground pattern of the Polychaeta. We, therefore, assume that functional constraints lead to a modification of the protonephridial head kidneys in Hirudinea and explain ultrastructural differences between the transitory nephridia in Hirudinea and the protonephridia in Polychaeta. The excretory organs of the freshwater polychaete Hypania invalida have been examined using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Three pairs of macroscopically and ultrastructurally different nephridia are present in the thorax. Intersegmental septa in the thorax are absent, with the exception of a single diaphragm between second and third chaetiger. The first pair of nephridia is anterior to this septum, the second pair crosses the septum, with the nephrostomes anterior and the ducts and the nephridiopori posterior to it, and the third pair of nephridia is entirely posterior to the diaphragm. The first two pairs of nephridia have ciliated nephrostomes of moderate size and long nephridial ducts that extend the length of the thorax. In contrast, the third pair is characterized by short ducts and very prominent nephrostomes. Macroscopically, seven different sections of nephridial duct cells can be distinguished along the length of the first two pairs of nephridia, whereas, on an ultrastructural basis, only six different regions can be identified. Only two regions of different duct cells can be recognized in the third pair of nephridia. Cells of the two anterior pairs of nephridia show typical characteristics of transport epithelia and most likely function as excretory organs. In contrast, the duct cells of the third pair are not that much differentiated and might primarily be responsible for the release of sexual products, as sperm was observed passing through these ducts. Podocyte‐like cells were observed to accompany nephridial ducts. J. Morphol., 2011. © 2010 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The distribution and configuration of nephridia and gonoducts are described for seven species from seven genera of the interstitial polychaete family Nerillidae. The ciliated nephridia and gonoducts were identified by tubulin staining and examined with a confocal laser scanning microscope. The following species of the seven to nine-segmented nerillids were examined: Leptonerilla prospera, Nerilla antennata (nine segments); Nerillidium mediterraneum, Trochonerilla mobilis, Gen. sp. A (eight segments); and Aristonerilla brevis, Paranerilla limicola (seven segments). Two of the examined species are hermaphroditic (N. mediterraneum and Gen. sp. A). Segmented nephridia can be found from the first to the last segment, with a total of two to five pairs. One to three pairs of segmented spermioducts are present in all species. One pair of gonoducts is found in all species, except for P. limicola, where they are absent. Nephridia vary in length from half to almost twice the length of a segment and may be curled up in loops. In A. brevis and P. limicola the nephridia are discontinuously ciliated. The distribution and configuration of spermioducts and gonoducts are also variable, although to a lesser extent. The spermioduct distribution is generally consistent within genera and therefore of systematic significance. Nephridia and gonoducts are never found together in the same segments, and the results indicate that gonoducts and nephridia have developed from the same anlagen. The distribution patterns of nephridia and gonoducts are discussed with respect to segmentation, systematics, and development.  相似文献

Summary The nephridia of Ophryotrocha puerilis are segmental organs. The nephrostome opens at the posterior margin of a setigerous segment into the coelomic cavity of this segment. The nephridial canal is made up of about 15 cells. These cells form an S-shaped tubule which extends into the following segment. The lumen of the nephridial canal ranges from 2 to 7 m in diameter. The nephropore opens laterally on the ventral surface of the body wall.In cross sections, one, two, or three cells are seen forming the canal. The inner surfaces of the canal cells are of different appearances along the canal. Since no regular pattern of cell distribution was found along the canals of different nephridia it is assumed that changes in cell structure along the canal are due to functional states or properties rather than to anatomically fixed regional differences. The canal cells either show smooth contours or they form brush borders of microvilli or sponge-like inner surfaces with a system of vacuolar canals running through the cytoplasm. Most of the canal cells are filled with various kinds of vesicles. Usually two or three cells contain larger vesicles up to 2.5 m in diameter with more or less electron-dense contents. Some of these vesicles resemble lysosomes. There are at least three bundles of cilia in each canal. In young specimens the number of cilia in one bundle is smaller (10–15) than in adult specimens (60–70). The nephridia do not show sex specific differences. The female nephridia do not function as genital ducts. As judged from the sizes of sperm and nephridia it appears to be possible that sperm are shed via male nephridia.  相似文献

We describe three enchytraeid species, including two new species, from Mt. Changbaishan, Jilin Province, northeastern China. Oconnorella cheni sp. nov. is characterized by a simple spermatheca; absence of the oesophageal appendages and seminal vesicle; and nephridia from 6/7, with a distinct funnel and the efferent duct arising from the anterior part of the postseptale. Oconnorella globula sp. nov. is distinguished by a spermatheca with two diverticula; lack of oesophageal appendages and seminal vesicle; and nephridia from 6/7, with distinct funnel and the efferent duct arising from the mid-ventral or posteroventral part of the postseptale. We redescribe Oconnorella changbaishanensis (Xie et al., 2000) from type and live specimens, and amend some characters that cannot be investigated clearly from mounted specimens. We revise the generic diagnosis of Oconnorella.  相似文献

The larval nephridia of the brackish-water polychaete Nereis diversicolor are described for the first time, and have been studied to determine if their times of development and structural characteristics are consistent with a role in the osmotic regulation of the larva. As shown in serial paraffin sections and by interference-contrast optics, the nephridia of the three-setiger larva consist of a single pair of very large metanephridia, arising in the 3rd larval setiger, but with their elongated terminal ducts and coiled ciliated tubules pushed forward into the 2nd setiger; their open metanephrostomes and anterior anchoring filaments lie dorsal to the 2nd set of setae. In contrast, the definitive or juvenile metanephridia, arising in the 4th and subsequently formed setigerous segments, have short terminal ducts and coiled ciliated tubules confined to the segments on which their external nephropores open; their nephrostomes are ventrally located and open into the rear of the next anterior segment. These findings are in contrast to the claims of Edouard Meyer (1887), who described two pairs of closed protonephridia in the 2nd and 3rd larval setigers of Perinereis cultrifera. Although it is not excluded that the single larval pair of metanephridia of N. diversicolor may arise as protonephridia, Meyer's claim of two pairs of larval protonephridia was an observational error. The larval nephridia of the marine Platynereis dumerilii resemble in form, but are considerably smaller than, those of N. diversicolor. It is concluded that the hypertrophied pair of larval metanephridia of N. diversicolor is an evolutionary adaptation to existence in habitats of low and unpredictably varying salinity. Their development occurs irrespective of the prevailing salinity; hence, it must be genetically determined.  相似文献

A new hesionid. Sinohesione genitaliphora gen. et sp. n., is described from intertidal sandy sediments of Hainan Island, China. It differs from hitherto known hesionids by the presence of external genital organs in both sexes. In the males there is one pair of sae-like appendages, each bearing a tube-shaped penis, on chaetiger 10. In the females the paired sae-shaped organs are situated on chaetiger 12. Reconstructions of semi- and ultrathin sections show that a long, heavily coiled sperm duct opens at the tip of each penis. The duct opens with a ciliated funnel into a seminal vesicle in chaetiger 9. Prominent gland cells surround the sperm duct for the most part. The female genital organs each have two openings; one of which leads to a blind ending seminal receptacle. The other is the external pore of a ciliated oviduct that originates as an open funnel in the coelom of chaetiger 10. The functional and phylogenetic significance of these structures is discussed.  相似文献

Theoretical studies have indicated that a significant fraction of all blood-tissue heat transfer occurs in artery-vein pairs whose arterial diameter varies between 200 and 1000 microns. In this study, we have developed a new in vivo technique in which it is possible to make the first direct measurements of the countercurrent thermal equilibration that occurs along thermally significant vessels of this size. Fine wire thermocouples were attached by superglue to the femoral arteries and veins and their subsequent branches in rats and the axial temperature variation in each vessel was measured under different physiological conditions. Unlike the blood vessels < 200 microns in diameter, where the blood rapidly equilibrates with the surrounding tissue, we found that the thermal equilibration length of blood vessels between 200 microns and 1000 microns in diameter is longer than or at least equivalent to the vessel length. It is shown that the axial arterial temperature decays from 44% to 76% of the total core-skin temperature difference along blood vessels of this size, and this decay depends strongly on the local blood perfusion rate and the vascular geometry. Our experimental measurements also showed that the SAV venous blood recaptured up to 41% of the total heat released from its countercurrent artery under normal conditions. The contribution of countercurrent heat exchange is significantly reduced in these larger thermally significant vessels for hyperemic conditions as predicted by previous theoretical analyses. Results from this study, when combined with previous analyses of vessel pairs less than 200 microns diameter, enable one estimate the arterial supply temperature and the correction coefficient in the modified perfusion source term developed by the authors.  相似文献

Nephridial diversity is high in Phyllodocida (Annelida) and ranges from protonephridia to metanephridia. The nephridia of Tomopteris helgolandica (Tomopteridae) can be characterized as metanephridia which bear a multiciliated solenocyte. This cell is medially apposed to the proximal part of the nephridial duct and bears several cilia, each of which is surrounded by a ring of 13 microvilli. An extracellular matrix connects the microvilli and thus leads to the impression of a tube surrounding the central cilium. Each tube separately enters a subjacent duct cell and the cilia extend into a cup-shaped compartment within the duct cell. This compartment is not connected to the duct. The funnel consists of eight multiciliated cells and is connected to the nephridial duct, which initially runs intercellularly and later percellularly. The last duct cell bears a neck-like process which pierces the subepidermal basal membrane and is connected to epidermal cells forming a small invagination, the nephropore. The nephridia of T. helgolandica develop from a band of cells and all structural components are differentiated at an early developmental stage. Further development is characterized by enlargment of the funnel, ciliogenesis in the solenocyte, merging of different sections of the duct and, finally, the formation of the nephropore. An evaluation of the nephridia of T. helgolandica leads to the hypothesis that the nephridial diversity in Phyllodocida can be explained by the retainment of different stages in the transition of protonephridia into metanephridia; this is caused by the formation of a ciliated funnel at different ontogenetic stages. Although the protonephridia in Phyllodocida are regarded as primary nephridial organs, protonephridia are also presumed to have evolved secondarily in progenetic interstitial species of the Annelida by an incomplete differentiation of the nephridial anlage. Resetting of the hypoxic sensitivity of the carotid chemoreceptors from the fetal to the adult arterial PO2 range follows the rise in PO2 which occurs after birth. The mechanism of this resetting is unknown. To study whether it is accompanied by a change in the carotid body microvasculature, 2 pairs of carotid bodies from fetal sheep (145 days gestation) and 2 pairs from 7-8 days-old lambs were examined. The ratio of the area of small vessels (6-16 microns diameter) or of larger vessels (greater than 16 microns diameter) to the total area of individual lobules of the carotid body was measured, using a semi-automatic image analysis system. This quantified the number and total cross-sectional area of small vessels and of larger vessels in 20 sections of 5 microns thickness taken at random from 200-350 sections cut from each carotid body. When the carotid bodies of the fetus and neonate were compared, the neonates showed increases in the percentage of the lobule area occupied by both small and large vessels, but the difference was only significant in the case of the larger vessels. There was no difference in the ratio of the area occupied by smaller vessels to the extravascular area of the lobule. Our results do not support the idea that the post-natal resetting of chemoreceptor sensitivity from the fetal to the post-natal range is accompanied by a change in the perfusion of the carotid body chemoreceptor cells.  相似文献

The microvascularization of the bile duct was studied in 20 adult guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) using microvascular corrosion casts in the scanning electron microscope. The main supplying and draining vessels are located in the adventitial layer; from there they form the subepithelial capillary network. The microangioarchitecture of the common bile duct is reminiscent of that of the cystic and hepatic ducts. The diameter of these ducts is 1,000 microns on average. The microvascular arrangement in the bile duct suggests a probable involvement of the capillaries in the absorption of bile hormones.  相似文献

Heteroplasmic point mutations in the human mtDNA control region.   总被引:24,自引:6,他引:18       下载免费PDF全文
As part of an investigation of the fixation mechanisms of mtDNA mutations in humans, we sequenced the first hypervariable segment of the control region in 180 twin pairs and found evidence of site heteroplasmy in 4 pairs. Significant levels of two mitochondrial haplotypes differing by a single point mutation were found in two MZ pairs, and within each pair, both members had similar levels of heteroplasmy. Two DZ pairs were found in which the predominant mitochondrial haplotype differed within the pair. We measured proportions of mitochondrial haplotypes within two twin pairs and their maternal relatives, using primer extension. In both maternal lineages, most family members were heteroplasmic, and the proportions of each genotype varied widely in different individuals. We used the changes in haplotype proportions within mother-offspring pairs to calculate the size range of potential bottlenecks in mitochondrial numbers occurring during development of the offspring. In most individuals, the most likely effective bottleneck sizes ranged from 3 to 20 segregating units, though in two individuals a small bottleneck was very unlikely and there was no upper limit on its possible size. We also used the data from this study, together with unpublished data from other populations, to estimate the frequency of site heteroplasmy in normal human populations. From this, we calculated that the rate of mutation and fixation in the first hypervariable segment of the human mtDNA control region is between 1.2 x 10(-6) and 2.7 x 10(-5) per site per generation. This range is in good agreement with published estimates calculated by other methods.  相似文献

Equalization of Z and W axes in chicken and quail oocytes.   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The different morphological types of ZW pairs have been classified in three main types according to the relative extension of the free segment of the Z axis: 1, "long asynaptic segment;" 2, "medium asynaptic segment;" and 3, "equalized." Pre- and post-pairing types have also been defined. Frequencies of each type were determined at day 20 and day 21 of incubation, and one and three days after hatching. The changing frequencies and the morphological transitions observed show a definite sequence of ZW types that can be used as a timetable for pachytene substaging. Measurements made on each ZW type show that the Z axis of the chicken shortens from 20.6 microns to 13.1 microns. This shortening occurs both in the free segment (at a higher rate) and in the paired segment (at a lower rate). The synaptonemal complex becomes elongated while adjustment occurs. The equalized Z axis makes many twists around the W axis. However, a segment 1 micron long from the synaptic terminus is free from twists and is assumed to be the homologously paired region. The ZW pair of the quail shows a similar behavior but equalization of the Z and W axes ends earlier and forms a straighter synaptonemal complex as compared with the chicken. In both species a recombination nodule is strictly localized near the synaptic terminus. In the ZW pair of the quail the average location of this nodule is 0.14 microns from the synaptic terminus. The meiotic behavior of ZW pairs in birds may be conserved.  相似文献

The appendix epididymidis and aberrant ductules possessed similar morphological characteristics. The epithelium was 31 +/- 3 microns in height and consisted primarily of ciliated and nonciliated cells, although a few lymphocytes were also present. The ultrastructure of major cell types showed most cell organelles in their cytoplasm. However, these organelles were poorly developed, suggesting that neither cell type performed either a secretory or an absorptive function. Although the vestigial organs and ductuli efferentes were similar in epithelial height and epithelial cell types, there were important morphological differences that were reliably used to differentiate between the two. First, the luminal diameter was significantly smaller in the vestigial organs (60 +/- 12 vs. 146 +/- 44 microns in the ductuli efferentes). Second, the nonciliated cells of the vestigial organs, unlike those of the ductuli efferentes, lacked both dense granules and vacuoles in the cytoplasm. Finally, the tubular cross-sections of the vestigial organs were closely packed and were located at the tip of the caput epididymidis in the case of the appendix epididymidis, and between the lobules of the ductuli efferentes in the case of the aberrant ductules.  相似文献

Two new urostylid ciliates, Metaurostylopsis songi n. sp. and Metaurostylopsis salina n. sp. and Metaurostylopsis marina (Kahl 1932) are investigated using live observation and protargol impregnation. These species were isolated in Korea from intertidal sediments, saline ponds, and coastal waters. Metaurostylopsis songi is in vivo about 120 microm x 25 microm, has a slenderly ellipsoidal body, colorless cortical granules in rows on ventral and dorsal body sides, about 54 macronuclear nodules, 28-47 adoral membranelles, five frontal, two or three frontoterminal and six or seven transverse cirri, and 9-12 midventral cirral pairs followed posteriorly by 1-3 single cirri. In vivo M. salina is about 60 microm x 25 microm, has a pyriform body, colorless cortical granules irregularly arranged, about 45 macronuclear nodules, 18-23 adoral membranelles, three frontal, three to five frontoterminal and two to five transverse cirri, and four or five midventral cirral pairs followed posteriorly by five to seven single cirri. Both species have three marginal cirral rows on each body side and 3 long dorsal kineties. The Korean specimens of M. marina match the Chinese population in all main features. Metaurostylopsis songi differs from M. marina by the more slender body, the number of frontal cirri (invariably five vs. four), and the arrangement of cortical granules (in rows on dorsal and ventral cortex vs. only along dorsal kineties and anterior body margin). Metaurostylopsis salina differs from its congeners by the distinctly smaller size, the pyriform body shape, the scattered cortical granules (vs. in rows), and number of frontal cirri. It differs from M. marina also by the number of midventral cirral pairs (four or five vs. seven to 11).  相似文献

Xylem embolism, the reduction of water flow by air-filled vessels, was measured in a stand of 5- to 8-year-old sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) saplings growing in a nursery bed in northwestern Vermont. Embolism was quantified as percentage loss in hydraulic conductivity of trunk and branch segments relative to maximum values obtained by removing air from vessels by repeated high pressure (173 kPa) perfusions. Ten segments per tree were cut from 6 trees for each of 11 measurement periods spaced at roughly monthly intervals from May 1986 to June 1987. During the 1986 growing season, embolism increased significantly from 11 to 31% in the larger branches and trunk (segment diameter #8805;0.5 cm), but remained at about 10% in twigs (segment diameter <0.5 cm). This was unexpected because the greatest water stess and thus potential for embolism occurs in twigs. During the winter, embolism increased throughout the trees and the trend with diameter was reversed; by February, small twigs were 84% embolized vs. 69% for larger branches and trunk. Dye perfusions showed that winter embolism in trunks was localized on the south side; this may have resulted from water loss by sublimation or evaporation in the absence of water uptake. Beginning in late March, embolism decreased throughout the trees to approximately 20% in June. This decrease was associated with positive xylem pressure of at least 16 kPa which may have originated in the roots, because weather conditions at the time were unfavorable for the generation of stem pressures characteristic of Acer species in early spring.  相似文献

Previous studies on nonhuman primate maternal styles showed that variation in infant-directed behavior falls along two dimensions, traditionally labeled as protectiveness and rejection. We investigated maternal styles in rhesus (Macaca mulatta) and Japanese (M. fuscata) macaques living in analogous captive social groups, and correlated them with the levels of estrogen metabolites excreted in female feces during the perinatal period. We focally observed mother-infant pairs 3 hours per week during the first 12 weeks of infant life. We collected fecal samples twice a week from each mother, starting 4 weeks before delivery and ending 4 weeks after delivery. Three significant components were extracted by principal component analysis from 15 different infant directed behaviors, each reflecting a different aspect of mothering style: rejection is correlated with behavioral measures of maternal opposition to contact; protectiveness is correlated with maternal solicitude; and independence is correlated with time in contact, grooming and cradling. Levels of estrogen metabolites are significantly correlated to rejection but not to protectiveness or independence, indicating that, in nonhuman primates, individual endocrine changes related to maternal behavior might specifically affect the timing of contact interruption.  相似文献

Protonephridia and Metanephridia - their relation within the Bilateria   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Two different kinds of nephridia occur within the Bilateria, protonephridia closed up by a terminal cell and metanephridia opening into the coelomic cavity. Both initially filter and subsequently modify intercellular fluids. Whereas metanephridia are strictly correlated to a coelom, proto-nephria occur in acoelomate as well as in coelomate organisms. Protonephridia of different bilaterian taxa correspond to each other in several structural features. Therefore, it is hypothesized that protonephridia are homologous organs throughout the Bilateria. They must have evolved once as one pair of monociliated organs orinatinng from the ectoderm and consistin of one terminal, one duct and one nephropore cell In the ground pattern of the Bilateria the cilium of the terminal cell has only one rootlet and is surrounded by resumably eight strengthened and elongated microvilli. Cilium and microvilli extend into the hollow cyinder of the terminal cell, which is oriented distally and is attached to the adjacent duct cell by desmosomes. This cylinder is perforated by clefts and represents the supporting structure of the filtration barrier consisting of extracellular matrix. In the Annelida and Phoronida, the metanehridia at the postlarval stages are ontogenetically preceded by protonephridia in the larva, but far reaching structural and developmental differ ences exist between the metanephridia of both. In horonids the rotonephrdial duct of the larva is retained in the postlarva and acquires a coelothelially derived funnel, whereas in annelids the metanephridia are uniform organs orihating from a solid anlage, which is a repetition of the protonehridial anlage of the larva. The differences contradict a homology of the metanephridia in Annegda and Phoronida. We therefore have to conclude that metanephridia must have evolved indeendently, at least two times. The comparative analysis of nephridia in the Bilateria allows the following hyothesis: Pro tonephridia were evolved in a monohasic acoelomate organism in the stem fineage of the Bilateria. During the evolution of biphasic life cycles consisting of an acoelomate larva and a coelomate adult, the information about the differentiation of protonephridia has been preserved in the early acoelomate developmental (larval) stages. During postlarval development and the formation of a coelom the protonephridia have either been retained or modified into meta nephridia. Accordin to the differences between the metanehridia of phoronids and annelids, we emphasize that. tiere is no possibility to trace back all bilaterian taxa with a coelom to a common stem species.  相似文献

Abstract The gonochoristic syllid Petitia amphophthalma is one of the truly interstitial polychaetes. P. amphophthalma does not show any epitokous modifications at maturity such as those that usually occur in syllids. The reproductive structures are unique: the male genital organs consist of a seminal vesicle in chaetigers 6–10, subdivided into a dorsal part tightly filled with spermatozoa and a ventral part with contents in different stages of spermatogenesis, one pair of sperm ducts and conspicuous gland cells situated in chaetigers 10 and 11. Their glandular secretions are discharged into the sperm duct together with those of other types of gland cells that form the duct. The oocytes develop freely within the body cavity of the females. Each of the fertile segments possesses a paired oviduct ending in a large ciliated funnel. Sperm ducts and oviducts are probably modifications of excretory organs; nephridia are absent in segments where gonoducts occur. A direct sperm transfer by lytic opening of the integument of the female and internal fertilization are inferred.
