This study sought to determine if providing affectively positive information about a flavor to preschool-aged children during tasting will increase recognition of and liking for the flavor and if the recognition and liking are associated. Forty-six 3- to 6-year-old children tasted 10 flavors: 5 presented with affectively positive information and 5 without. The 10 flavors were then presented again interspersed with 10 distracter flavors. Children reported whether they had tasted the flavor previously and provided hedonic ratings for each flavor. Children's ability to remember having tasted a flavor was greater when the flavor was presented with affectively positive information than without in children throughout the age range of 3-6 years. In children younger than 4.5 years, the provision of information had no effect on hedonic rating, whereas in older children, the provision of information was associated with greater hedonic ratings. We conclude that providing affectively positive information to children about a flavor can increase their ability to recognize the flavor as previously tasted and increases hedonic rating of the flavor in children older than 4.5 years.  相似文献

Objective: Anti‐fat prejudice is a common attitude in our society, and it has implications for those who hold and are targets of this prejudice. Little is known, however, about how parents’ anti‐fat attitudes impact the ways they feed their young children. We hypothesized that parents’ attitudes about weight would predict parents’ restrictive feeding practices above and beyond the effects of the child's actual weight and the parents’ concern about child overweight. Research Methods and Procedures: A total of 126 mothers and 102 fathers returned surveys about anti‐fat attitudes, feeding practices (restriction for weight and restriction for health), and concern about child overweight. Results: Parental concern about child overweight was related to higher restrictive feeding practices for both mothers and fathers. Parents’ anti‐fat attitudes also predicted restrictive feeding above and beyond the effects of parent and child BMI and parental concern about overweight. Discussion: These findings suggest that parents’ anti‐fat attitudes impact the way they feed their children.  相似文献

Using the flight simulator system, the operant conditioned visual flight orientation behavior inDrosophila was studied. It was demonstrated that the visual learning performance is associated with age; flies learn more reliably at 3–4 days than at 1–2 days of age; the cAMP level of brain is also increasing with age; the brain cAMP content of nonlearner flies of wild type is much higher than that of normal flies; the cAMP level of brain increased abnormally after being fed with caffeine, and the learning performance decred. These results imply that a moderate range of cAMP level is necessary for the visual learning and memory pmess. Abnody high or low level of cAMP causes defects of leaming and memory ability. In order to test the effect of calorie information on fast food choices, we conducted a questionnaire employing two types of stated preferences methods (the best-worst-scaling and intentional questions) and a follow-up randomized field experiment in a sample of 119 participants. This combined approach allowed us to test the internal validity of preferences for fast food meals across elicitation scenarios. The results showed that calorie information reduces the probability of selecting high calorie meals only in the questionnaire, while it did not have any significant impact on actual purchasing behavior in the field experiment. Thus, the findings show that there is a clear difference between the role of calorie information on immediate stated preference choices, and the relatively low level of responsiveness in real choices in a restaurant. We believe that the current results are quite suggestive, indicating the limits of predicting actual fast food behavior, and may open the way to using data sources that combine stated methods with field experiments.  相似文献

Incidental and intentional learning and memory for 2 novel flavors were compared in young and elderly subjects. Incidental and intentional learning groups rated 2 new soups on acceptability for different occasions and were tested for memory the next day. On the first day, only the intentional group was asked to memorize the stimuli. With incidental learning, elderly and young were equally good, but the young performed better with intentional than with incidental learning, whereas the elderly did not. There were no age-related differences in perceptual discrimination. When comparing perceived flavor with the memory of it, the elderly tend to overrate intensities of remembered flavor attributes, whereas the young tend to underrate them. Memory was not related to flavor pleasantness or neophobia. Like memory for taste and texture, flavor memory seems to be mainly tuned at detecting changes and based on "feelings of not knowing" rather than on precise identification and recognition of previously encountered stimuli.  相似文献

Capuchins, like other primates, use feedback from sensory cues and digestion to make decisions about which foods to consume and which to avoid. However, little is known about how capuchins make consumption decisions when simultaneously presented with novel and familiar foods, or how food familiarity and macronutrient concentration together influence food choice, topics with potential implications for developmental and health research. In this study, we evaluated the role of familiarity, as well as fat and sugar concentration, in the food selections of captive tufted capuchins (Sapajus apella). In the first experiment, over 10 sessions, subjects were assigned to either a group that chose between one familiar and one novel food item both high in fat or sugar (high condition), or to a group that chose between one familiar and one novel food item both low in fat or sugar (low condition). In the second experiment, subjects were divided into three groups, familiarized with food over five feeding sessions, and then offered the familiarized food and a novel food that varied in fat or sugar for 10 sessions. When offered foods high in fat, capuchins showed no clear signs of neophobia, forming an initial preference for the novel food, rejecting foods less frequently, and selecting foods faster than when offered foods low in fat. These trends were generally not observed in response to foods with sugar. When presented with options that varied in macronutrient concentration, subjects showed an initial interest in the novel food irrespective of whether it was high in fat or sugar, yet formed a final preference for the higher-concentration item. Findings suggest that the concentration of fat or sugar in novel foods may be an important mediator of exploratory behavior and that capuchins rely on immediate feedback from taste and other sensory cues to make consumption decisions.  相似文献

The rate at which triploid grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella , consumed two plant species from different locations was measured and compared to the chemical composition of the plants. Grass carp fed on Elodea canadensis from three lakes at significantly different rates ( P > 0.001), but did not eat Elodea densa from two of the sites at different rates. Feeding rate of the grass carp was positively correlated to the concentration of calcium ( r = 0.976) and lignin ( r = 0.946), but negatively correlated to the content of iron ( r =−0.808), silica (r=-0.934) and cellulose ( r =−0.922). Multiple regression analysis revealed that calcium and cellulose content were the most important predictors of consumption rate. These experiments demonstrate that water chemistry may affect palatability and could in part be responsible for some of the discrepancies in grass carp consumption rate and preference studies.  相似文献

Objective: To examine the extent to which television (TV) and video viewing is associated with consumption of fast food by preschool‐age children. Research Methods and Procedures: In a cross‐sectional study of 240 parents of children ages 2.0 to 5.9 years, parents reported the number of hours their child watched TV/videos on an average weekday and weekend day in the past month; a daily, weighted average of TV/video viewing was then calculated. The main outcome was parents’ report of their children's fast food intake, using the question, “How many times a week does your child eat at fast food restaurants such as McDonald's, Burger King, or Kentucky Fried Chicken?” dichotomized to (never/<1 vs. ≥1 time/wk). The association of TV/video viewing with fast food intake was evaluated by multiple logistic regression before and after adjusting for several potential confounders. Results: Twenty‐two percent of parents reported that their child ate at fast food restaurants at least once per week. After adjusting for parents’ age, race/ethnicity, and household income as well as child's age and sex, for each 1‐hour increase of TV/video watched per day, the odds ratio (OR) for consuming fast food ≥1 time per week was 1.60 (95% confidence interval, 1.03 to 2.49). After further adjustment for socio‐environmental factors that might serve as proxies for the availability of healthy food options, such as parental time constraints and the availability and high cost of fresh fruits and vegetables in their neighborhoods, the OR for consuming fast food ≥1 time per week was minimally attenuated (OR, 1.55; 95% confidence interval, 1.04 to 2.31). Discussion: TV/video viewing was correlated with fast food consumption among preschool children in this study. Our findings raise the possibility that greater exposure to TV and videos may influence preschool children's consumption of unhealthful foods.  相似文献

Time constraints contribute to individuals’ dietary choices along with incomes, prices, and preferences. As fast food is prepared and served quickly, it is often preferred to other food options, especially when individuals are under time pressure. This paper focuses on a set of job-related characteristics that could potentially contribute to fast-food consumption choice, and controls for standard socio-demographic, economic, and lifestyle factors. This study uses data from a quantitative household survey on health behavior and medicine of Russian adults conducted in 2017 (n = 4006). The study applies simple probit, ordered probit, and zero-inflated ordered probit models to examine how job-related characteristics are connected to the probability and frequency of fast-food consumption among Russian adults. The results shows that employment is positively associated with both probability and frequency of fast-food consumption. However, for working adults, the decisions to eat fast food, and how frequently it is eaten, are affected by different factors. For example, working part time decreases the probability of fast-food consumption; having more than one job increases the frequency of its intake for fast-food consumers; having canteens with hot meals at work decreases the frequency of fast-food intake. Although job-related factors are significant in all models, marginal effects show that living in large cities, especially Moscow and Saint Petersburg, plays a larger role in the probability and frequency of fast-food consumption because access to various fast-food outlets increases in relation to the size of the settlement.  相似文献

Dyslexia is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired reading ability despite normal intellect, and is associated with specific difficulties in phonological and rapid auditory processing (RAP), visual attention and working memory. Genetic variants in Doublecortin domain‐containing protein 2 (DCDC2) have been associated with dyslexia, impairments in phonological processing and in short‐term/working memory. The purpose of this study was to determine whether sensory and behavioral impairments can result directly from mutation of the Dcdc2 gene in mice. Several behavioral tasks, including a modified pre‐pulse inhibition paradigm (to examine auditory processing), a 4/8 radial arm maze (to assess/dissociate working vs. reference memory) and rotarod (to examine sensorimotor ability and motor learning), were used to assess the effects of Dcdc2 mutation. Behavioral results revealed deficits in RAP, working memory and reference memory in Dcdc2del2/del2 mice when compared with matched wild types. Current findings parallel clinical research linking genetic variants of DCDC2 with specific impairments of phonological processing and memory ability.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Children and adolescents with Attention De?cit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have a high prevalence of obesity, but the relationship between these two problems is not clear. Chronotype preferences may be one of the possible mechanisms underlying the link between ADHD and obesity. This is the ?rst study to investigate whether chronotype preferences are a mechanism linking ADHD symptoms to obesity in children and adolescents. This cross-sectional study included 110 drug-naive children and adolescents aged 7–17 years with ADHD. The Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia‐Present and Lifetime Version (K‐SADS‐PL) was used to diagnose ADHD or to exclude psychiatric comorbidity. The Conners’ Parents Rating Scale-Revised Short Version (CPRS-RS) and Children’s Chronotype Questionnaire (CCQ) were used to assess the severity of ADHD symptoms and chronotype preferences. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated and classified according to national age- and gender-specific reference values. The participants were divided into three groups as normal weight (<85%, n = 38), overweight (85%-95%, n = 30) and obesity (>95%, n = 42) according to their BMI percentile. There were statistically significant differences between the three groups in terms of chronotype preference (p = .000). Morningness preference was 86.84% in the normal BMI group and 26.19% in the obese BMI group. Eveningness preference was 7.89% in the normal BMI group and 61.90% in the obese BMI group. There was a correlation between the BMI percentile scores and the morningness/eveningness scale (M/E) scores. Moreover, there was a correlation between the BMI percentile scores and the oppositional and ADHD index scores. According to logistic regression analysis, the odds ratio of having evening type for obesity was 5.66 and the odds ratio of having morning type for normal weight was 13.03. Independently from ADHD symptoms, eveningness was directly related to obesity and morningness was directly related to normal weight. Prospective studies should be performed to better understand the relationship between ADHD, overweight/obesity and chronotype.  相似文献

目的探讨白细胞介素-6(Interleuk in-6,IL-6)基因多态性与小儿全身炎症反应综合征(system ic inflamm atory response syndrom e,SIRS)的关系。方法 30例SIRS患儿为SIRS组,随机挑选30例健康体检的小儿为对照组,采用限制片段长度多态分析聚合酶链反应方法(PCR/RFLP)对2组儿童的IL-6基因的-174位点和-572位点基因进行分析;并应用酶联免疫吸附试验法(ELISA)检测2组儿童的血清IL-6水平,观察基因型对血清IL-6水平的影响。结果 IL-6基因-572位点基因型和等位基因频率在2组间分布差异有统计学意义,SIRS组GG基因型和G等位基因频率均显著高于对照组(P〈0.05);携带G等位基因个体患SIRS的风险约是C等位基因型个体的6.84倍(OR95%CI:2.62~17.89,P〈0.05);G等位基因携带者IL-6血清含量显著高于CC基因携带者(P〈0.05)。IL-6基因启动子-174位点在SIRS组与对照组中只发现GG基因型,CG和CC基因型在2组中均未发现;SIRS组IL-6血清水平显著高于对照组(P〈0.05)。结论 IL-6基因-572C/G多态性可能是中国汉族儿童SIRS发病的遗传危险因素之一,血清IL-6水平可能受其基因多态性的影响。而IL-6基因-174G/C多态性与中国汉族儿童SIRS发病可能不具有相关性。  相似文献

Our reliance on our group members has exerted a profound influence over our motivation: successful group functioning requires that we are motivated to interact, and engage, with those around us. In other words, we need to belong. In this article, I explore the developmental origins of our need to belong. I discuss existing evidence that, from early in development, children seek to affiliate with others and to form long-lasting bonds with their group members. Furthermore, when children are deprived of a sense of belonging, it has negative consequences for their well-being. This focus on social motivation enables us to examine why and in what circumstances children engage in particular behaviours. It thus provides an important complement to research on social cognition. In doing so, it opens up important questions for future research and provides a much-needed bridge between developmental and social psychology.  相似文献

The kinetics of the acquisition and loss of the use of olfactory and visual cues were previously obtained in six experimental colonies of the ant Myrmica sabuleti meinert 1861, under normal conditions. In the present work, the same experiments were conducted on six other naive identical colonies of M. sabuleti, under electromagnetic radiation similar to those surrounding GSM and communication masts. In this situation, no association between food and either olfactory or visual cues occurred. After a recovery period, the ants were able to make such an association but never reached the expected score. Such ants having acquired a weaker olfactory or visual score and still undergoing olfactory or visual training were again submitted to electromagnetic waves. Not only did they lose all that they had memorized, but also they lost it in a few hours instead of in a few days (as under normal conditions when no longer trained). They kept no visual memory at all (instead of keeping 10% of it as they normally do). The impact of GSM 900 MHz radiation was greater on the visual memory than on the olfactory one. These communication waves may have such a disastrous impact on a wide range of insects using olfactory and/or visual memory, i.e., on bees.  相似文献

A potential association between socioeconomic status (SES) and self‐reported use of mobile phones has been investigated in a few studies. If measured exposure to mobile phone networks differs by SES in children, it has not yet been studied. Interview data of 1,481 children and 1,505 adolescents on participants' mobile phone use, socio‐demographic characteristics and potential confounders were taken from the German MobilEe‐study. Sociodemographic data was used to stratify participants into three “status groups” (low, middle, high). Using a personal dosimeter, we obtained an exposure profile over 24 h for each of the participants. Exposure levels during waking hours were expressed as mean percentage of the reference level. Children with a low SES were more likely to own a mobile phone (OR 2.1; 95% CI: 1.1–3.9) and also reported to use their mobile phone longer per day (OR 2.4; 95% CI: 1.1–5.4) than children with a high SES. For adolescents, self‐reported duration of mobile phone use per day was also higher with a low SES (OR: 3.4; 95% CI: 1.4–8.4) compared with a high SES. No association between SES and measured exposure to mobile telecommunication networks was seen for children or adolescents. Mobile phone use may differ between status groups with higher use among disadvantaged groups. However, this does not result in higher overall exposure to mobile telecommunication networks. Whether short duration of own mobile phone use or the small numbers of participants with a low SES are causal, have to be investigated in further studies. Learning ability and immunity to parasites are linked at the physiological level in several insect species. The aim of this work was to investigate the relationship between learning and immunity at an evolutionary level. We tested whether selection for improved learning ability in Drosophila melanogaster led to changes in parasitoid resistance as a correlated response. Similarly, we assayed whether selection for better parasitoid resistance led to a change in learning ability. There was no significant difference between selected and control lines in either case; the estimated confidence intervals for the differences indicate that a trade-off relationship is unlikely.  相似文献

A methodological issue in research relating daytime mood to dream content is the question of whether mood congruency effects—that is, recalling more negative events if the current mood is more negative—also play a role in the dream recall process. This study adopted an indirect approach by testing the hypothesis that interindividual differences in mood congruency effects in a memory task carried out in the daytime correlate with mood congruency effects in dream recall (recalling more negative dream emotions, as one would predict on the basis of the current stress level or overall mood state). The findings, however, did not support the hypothesis of mood congruency effects and, thus, rule out that the findings regarding the continuity hypothesis of dreaming are biased by selective recall. The volume of the hippocampal formation (HF) in black‐capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) varies across the seasons, in parallel with the seasonal cycle in food hoarding. In this study, we estimate cell density and total cell number in the HF across seasons in both juveniles and adults. We find that the seasonal variation in volume is due to an increase in the number of small and large cells (principally neurons) in the fall. Adults also have lower neuron densities than juveniles. Both juveniles and adults show an increase in cell density in the rostral part of the HF in August and a subsequent decrease toward October. This suggests that the net cell addition to the HF may already start in August. We discuss the implications of this early start with respect to the possibility that the seasonal change in HF volume is driven by the experience of food hoarding. Objectives: To establish the association between changes in height and prevalence of obesity between 1996 and 2004 in Chilean preschool children. Research Methods and Procedures: Children registered in the Junta Nacional de Jardines Infantiles (JUNJI) preschool program were routinely measured three times a year and in consecutive years. Two indices [weight‐for‐height z‐scores (WHZ) and BMI centiles] were used to define obesity. Height‐for‐age z‐scores (HAZ) were used to define stature. Generalized estimating equations were used to describe the relationship between stature and obesity while controlling for repeated measurements in children. Results: The prevalence of obesity in Chilean preschool children has remained relatively constant over the past 9 years when either index is used. The prevalence of stunted (HAZ ≤2) children has decreased, while the proportion of children who are tall (HAZ >2) has increased. Using WHZ to define obesity, stunted children do not seem to be at increased risk of obesity when compared with children of normal height. Tall children were strongly protected from obesity when either criterion was used to define obesity. Discussion: The lack of association between stunting and obesity using WHZ ≥2 likely reflects the fact that Chile is in the post‐transitional phase of the nutrition transition, and stunting is no longer a risk factor for obesity; however, the associations observed between stunting and BMI suggest that either WHZ or BMI, or both, are inaccurate criteria to define overweight. Conclusions: There is a unique relationship between stature and obesity in preschool children that is different from that observed in older children in the same population.  相似文献
