The stages in the life cycle of Bothriocephalus acheilognathi have been studied with the aid of scanning electron microscopy. Emergence of the coracidium occurred after 3–5 days at 20°C. Soon after hatching the coracidium began to swell and the cilia became coiled and lost their locomotory function. The surface of the coracidium was covered in protuberances of unknown function. After consumption by the copepod intermediate host, the coracidium developed into a procercoid. Upon development of a cercomer the procercoid could infect the fish definitive host. Identification of adult B. acheilognathi should be made on specimens relaxed in cold water for 10 min, and be based on the heart shaped scolex and prominent square apical disc.  相似文献

The Asian fish tapeworm, Bothriocephalus acheilognathi, has been considered one of the most dangerous parasites for cultured carp and a risk for native freshwater fish populations worldwide. This cestode is highly pathogenic for fishes especially fry. In this paper we record B. acheilognathi parasitizing the endangered and endemic freshwater fish Profundulus hildebrandi from the endorheic basin of San Crist6bal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. B. acheilognathi was recorded from 10 of the 11 sampled localities, with high values of prevalence (> 60%) and mean abundance (> 4.50). The infection was persistent all through the year; gravid cestodes were recorded in all samples. It is assumed that B. acheilognathi entered to this area through the introduction of common carp Cyprinus carpio, for aquacultural purposes. The data presented in this paper document the successful introduction, colonization and establishment of this alien species into the endangered P. hildebrandi.  相似文献

We report the first case of egg isolation of the Asian fish tapeworm Bothriocephalus acheilognathi (Bothriocephalidea) from human stool. A male patient from Saint Laurent du Maroni (French Guiana) presenting abdominal pain was examined in France for the diagnosis of intestinal parasites. Diphyllobothrium-like eggs were observed in his stool. However, molecular phylogenetic analyses based on sequences of rDNA and COI genes showed that the eggs observed belong to a bothriocephalidean cestode B. acheilognathi. The adult life stages of B. acheilognathi cestodes are known as invasive parasites of a wide spectrum of fish; however, they have not been described to parasitize any mammals. This human infection seems to be accidental and represents a parasite passage through human intestine after the consumption of an infected fish host.  相似文献

Assuming that the inshore and offshore waters of Lake Victoria are impacted differently by human activities in its catchment, this study investigated the water quality dynamics of the lake. A total of 29 stations were sampled in 2005–2008 for dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, Secchi transparencies, temperature, turbidity, chlorophyll a, NO3, SRSi, TN and TP. There was a decreasing trend of the measured parameters towards offshore sites, except for Secchi transparency and NO3, which increased towards the offshore waters. DO concentrations (mean ± SD) varied between 6.97 ± 0.57 mg O2 l–1 and 5.80 ± 0.72 mg O2 l–1 in the inshore and offshore waters, respectively. Turbidity values were comparatively higher in the inshore (3.73 ± 2.21 NTU) than the offshore waters (2.19 ± 1.81 NTU). Chlorophyll a concentrations varied between 17.36 ± 6.13 µg l–1 and 8.09 ± 4.38 µg l–1 in the inshore and offshore waters, respectively. Increases of unsustainable human activities in the lake and its catchments, plus increased degradation of wetlands, are among the causes of the observed water quality changes. In order to be fruitful and sustainable, the management of Lake Victoria and its catchment needs to take an ecosystem approach, and to involve all key stakeholders.  相似文献

The species of the pseudophyllidean genus Bothriocephalus Rudolphi, 1808 parasitising freshwater fishes in America are revised, based on the examination of type and voucher specimens of seven taxa. There are five valid species: Bothriocephalus claviceps (Goeze, 1782), B. cuspidatus Cooper, 1917, B. formosus Mueller & Van Cleave, 1932, B. acheilognathi Yamaguti, 1934, and B. pearsei Scholz, Vargas-Vázquez & Moravec, 1996. B. texomensis Self, 1954 from Hiodon alosoides in the USA, and B. musculosus Baer, 1937 from a cichlid Cichlasoma biocellatum (= C. octofasciatum) which died in an aquarium in Switzerland, are synonymised with B. cuspidatus. B. schilbeodis Cheng & James, 1960 from Schilbeodes insignis in the USA, B. speciosus (Leidy, 1858) Leidy, 1872 from Boleostoma olmstedi in the USA, and B. cestus Leidy, 1885 from Salvelinus sp. in Canada are considered to be species inquirendae until new material for the evaluation of their taxonomic status is available. B. cordiceps (Leidy, 1872) from Salmo (= Salvelinus) fontinalis in North America is in fact a larva (plerocercoid) of a Diphyllobothrium species. The study showed that there have been many misidentifications, mostly of B. cuspidatus erroneously designated as B. formosus or B. claviceps. The five valid species are redescribed and illustrated, with emphasis on scolex morphology. The distribution of individual taxa and the spectrum of their definitive hosts are briefly reviewed and a key facilitating identification of individual species is also provided.  相似文献

Whole specimens and histological and semi-thin sections of Bothriocephalus gregarius adults were exposed to lectins to identify carbohydrates present in the tegument and parenchyma. The sugars N-acetyl glucosamine, N-acetyl galactosamine, galactose, glucose (or mannose) and fucose were detected in the cestode using eight lectins: WGA (Wheat germ agglutinin), HPA (Helix pomatia agglutinin), SBA (Soy bean agglutinin), PHA (Phaseolus vulgaris agglutinin), RCA60 and RCA120 (Ricinus communis toxin and agglutinin), ConA (Concanavalin agglutinin) and UEA-I (Ulex europaeus agglutinin). Combined use of these methodological approaches (whole specimens, paraffin and semi-thin sections) revealed the presence of a gradient in the distribution of most of the sugars over the tegument, with the highest concentrations on the strobila (as shown by most of the lectins). Other sugars were specific for the scolex or strobila (as shown by UEA-I or HPA, respectively). The ultrastructural study showed that the distribution of glycoconjugates was associated with the presence of specific tegumental coats. The significance of this selective distribution and its relevance to cestode physiology and host-parasite relationships are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Bothriocephalus specimens from one Ctenopharyngodon idella (O+) were fixed using three different techniques and the scolex morphology was examined using scanning electron microscopy. The scolices were compared with figures of the five species of Bothriocephalus and one species of Schyzocotyle previously described from cyprinid fishes. The taxonomic history of the Bothriocephalus species parasitizing cyprinid fish is reviewed. It is concluded that there is only one Bothriocephalus species parasitizing cyprinid fishes, and that continued use should be made of the name B. acheilognathi Yamaguti, 1934. ac]19840326  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships of the Poaceae subfamily, Pooideae, were estimated from the sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of nuclear ribosomal DNA. The entire ITS region of 25 species belonging to 19 genera representing seven tribes was directly sequenced from polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-amplified DNA fragments. The published sequence of rice, Oryza saliva, was used as the outgroup. Sequences of these taxa were analyzed with maximum parsimony (PAUP) and the neighbor-joining distance method (NJ). Among the tribes, the Stipeae, Meliceae and Brachypodieae, all with small chromosomes and a basic number more than x=7, diverged in succession. The Poeae, Aveneae, Bromeae and Triticeae, with large chromosomes and a basic number of x=7, form a monophyletic clade. The Poeae and Aveneae are the sister group of the Bromeae and Triticeae. On the ITS tree, the Brachypodieae is distantly related to the Triticeae and Bromeae, which differs from the phylogenies based on restriction-site variation of cpDNA and morphological characters. The phylogenetic relationships of the seven pooid tribes inferred from the ITS sequences are highly concordant with the cytogenetic evidence that the reduction in chromosome number and the increase in chromosome size evolved only once in the pooids and pre-dated the divergence of the Poeae, Aveneae, Bromeae and Triticeae. This paper reports factually on available data; however, the USDA neither guarantees nor warrants the standard of the product, and the use of the name by USDA implies no approval of the product to the exclusion of others that may also be suitableThis paper is a cooperative investigation of USDA-ARS and the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station. Phylogenetic relationships between Bothriocephalus species from freshwater and marine teleosts from different geographical regions were studied using internal transcribed spacer-2 and partial 18S ribosomal DNA. The analyses revealed a paraphyly of Bothriocephalus with respect to the genera Polyonchobothrium, Anantrum, and Clestobothrium. The freshwater species Bothriocephalus claviceps, B. acheilognathi, and Bothriocephalus sp. from Dorosoma petenense formed a well-supported monophyletic cluster, with Polyonchobothrium at its base. In contrast, the type species, B. scorpii, clustered within a distinct lineage formed by a heterogeneous assemblage of marine species, Clestobothrium crassiceps and Anantrum tortum, and the freshwater species B. cf. japonicus. This shows that the current morphology-based classification is unlikely to reflect the phylogenetic relationships within this group and will require a thorough revision.  相似文献

A taxonomic study of specimens of Bothriocephalus from eels (Anguilla spp.) in Japan has demonstrated the occurrence of two species, B. claviceps (Goeze, 1782) and B. japonicus Yamaguti, 1934. The former species is a parasite of eels (A. anguilla and A. rostrata) in the Holarctic Region and was recently reported from A. marmorata in Japan. The conspecificity of tapeworms newly found in an eel (A. ? japonica) from Lake Biwa, central Japan, with B. claviceps has been confirmed by the great similarity of their ITS-2 gene sequences (similarity 95.3% and 95.2%). However, the sequences of worms identified as B. claviceps from A. marmorata differed considerably from those of B. claviceps from two populations of A. anguilla from Europe and the above-mentioned one from Japan (similarity 66.3%, 67.1% and 65.1 %, respectively), thus indicating that the former cestodes may have been misidentified. This assumption was confirmed by morphological evaluation of a voucher specimen from A. marmorata. The morphology of this cestode, as well as those from A. japonica from two localities in Japan (Lakes Biwa and Suwa), indicates their conspecificity with B. japonicus. The validity of this taxon has been confirmed on the basis of a re-examination of the type-specimens. The two taxa, B. japonicus and B. claviceps, differ from each other in the shape and length of the scolex (619–730 μm in B. japonicus versus 1,180–2,100 μm in B. claviceps), the relative position of the cirro-vaginal and uterine pores (opposite each other in relation to the median line of the body in B. japonicus versus tandem or slightly offset along the median line in the latter species), and the size of the eggs (41–52 × 28–35 μm in B. japonicus versus 50–70 × 31–43 μm in B. claviceps).

Karyotypes of Eubothrium salvelini, E. crassum and Eubothrium sp. were studied using conventional Giemsa staining and comparative karyometric analysis. The karyotypes, reported here for the first time, consist of eight chromosome pairs. The two first pairs of homologues are metacentric and markedly larger than the remaining elements. The obvious similarity in karyotype structure does not exclude the possibility of discriminating E. salvelini and E. crassum using karyotypic characters. The best cytogenetic marker is the last pair of chromosomes, which is acrocentric in the karyotype of E. salvelini and metacentric in that ofE. crassum. Karyological observations provide strong evidence for assigning Eubothrium sp. from Clupea harengus membras to E. crassum. Comments are made on the karyotypes of these and related species with respect to their phylogenetic links.  相似文献

A new species of Podocotyloides is described from Sillago bassensis caught off the coast of Western Australia. This is the second report of a species of this genus from Australian waters but the first of a new species. P. victori n. sp. is one of four species whose vitelline follicles extend into the forebody. It is distinguished from the other three species with vitelline follicles in the forebody by its relatively shorter forebody, smaller eggs and bipartite seminal vesicle. Pedunculotrema Fischthal & Thomas, 1970 is reduced to synonymy with Podocotyloides Yamaguti, 1934.  相似文献

Spermiogenesis and the ultrastructural features of the spermatozoon of Diphyllobothrium latum (Cestoda, Pseudophyllidea) are described using transmission electron microscopy. Spermiogenesis is characterized by the development of two flagella of unequal length that grow asynchronously. When the first growing flagellum starts to rotate, the second one develops. Flagellar rotation is thus asymmetric and asynchronic. It is followed by proximodistal fusion with the median cytoplasmic process. Electron-dense material is present in the apical region of the zone of differentiation in the early stages of spermiogenesis. The intercentriolar body consists of seven plates: three are electron-dense. Four attachment zones occur in the median cytoplasmic process. An atypical arrangement of striated roots was occasionally observed. The mature spermatozoon possesses two axonemes of 9 + "1" trepaxonematan pattern, nucleus, cortical microtubules, electron-dense granules, and lacks mitochondria. The ultrastructure of the anterior extremity of the spermatozoon in D. latum clearly differs from that in the bothriocephalid pseudophyllideans, mainly in the absence of a crested body and a ring of electron-dense tubular structures. The spermatological data support the assumption that the order Pseudophyllidea is formed by two unrelated clades, "Bothriocephalidea" and "Diphyllobothriidea."  相似文献
