This review highlights a number of reasons why insect diapause merits attention. Knowledge of diapause is essential for understanding the seasonal biology of an insect species, and such information is also required for the development of effective pest management strategies; manipulating domesticated species used in pollination and silk production; developing accurate predictive models used to forecast periods of pest abundance; and increasing the shelf‐life of parasitoids and predatory mites used in the biological control industry. Mechanisms used by diapausing insects to survive low temperature may provide tips for cryopreserving insect stocks, a vital need within the research community. Diapause also presents an interesting model for probing fundamental questions in development, and we are indebted to diapause studies for early insights into insect hormones. In addition, I argue that insect diapause may provide insights into questions on aging, obesity and disease transmission, and diapausing insects offer a potentially rich source of pharmaceutical agents that may contribute to improvement of human health.  相似文献

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We examine the reasons for investigating gene-environment interactions and address recent reports evaluating interactions between genes and environmental modulators in relation to cardiovascular disease and its common risk factors. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies focusing on smoking, physical activity, and alcohol and coffee consumption are observational and include relatively large sample sizes. They tend to examine single genes, however, and fail to address interactions with other genes and other correlated environmental factors. Studies examining gene-diet interactions include both observational and interventional designs. These studies are smaller, especially those including dietary interventions. Among the reported gene-diet interactions, it is important to highlight the strengthened position of APOA5 as a major gene that is involved in triglyceride metabolism and modulated by dietary factors, and the identification of APOA2 as a modulator of food intake and obesity risk. SUMMARY: The study of gene-environment interactions is an active and much needed area of research. Although technical barriers of genetic studies are rapidly being overcome, inclusion of comprehensive and reliable environmental information represents a significant shortcoming of genetics studies. Progress in this area requires inclusion of larger populations but also more comprehensive, standardized, and precise approaches to capturing environmental information.  相似文献

In this paper, we demonstrate how simulation studies can be used to answer questions about identifiability and consequences of omitting effects from a model. The methodology is presented through a case study where identifiability of genetic and/or individual (environmental) maternal effects is explored. Our study system is a wild house sparrow (Passer domesticus) population with known pedigree. We fit pedigree‐based (generalized) linear mixed models (animal models), with and without additive genetic and individual maternal effects, and use deviance information criterion (DIC) for choosing between these models. Pedigree and R‐code for simulations are available. For this study system, the simulation studies show that only large maternal effects can be identified. The genetic maternal effect (and similar for individual maternal effect) has to be at least half of the total genetic variance to be identified. The consequences of omitting a maternal effect when it is present are explored. Our results indicate that the total (genetic and individual) variance are accounted for. When an individual (environmental) maternal effect is omitted from the model, this only influences the estimated (direct) individual (environmental) variance. When a genetic maternal effect is omitted from the model, both (direct) genetic and (direct) individual variance estimates are overestimated.  相似文献

This commentary argues that intellectual fragmentation is not only bad for the study of poverty, prejudice and penalty; it is bad for the problems themselves. Considering new objects of analysis for research on inequality – that is, critically reconsidering what it is that we should be studying in the first place – is proposed as a viable preventative to academic parochialism and overspecialization.  相似文献

Summary Ionic current steps were recorded with the patch-clamp technique from algal cells that had been prepared without enzyme treatment. Inward current steps with different conductance levels occurred, the lowest level being 7 pS. There were complex transitions between levels indicating either a lack of independence between single channels, or sublevels of a much larger conductance unit. The reversal potential was consistent with the permeant ion being Cl. Furthermore, when a different concentration of Cl was used in the patch electrode the reversal potential of the inward current shifted in a manner consistent with a Nernstian change in the Cl reversal potential. The frequency of the current steps was voltage dependent and suggestive of the hyperpolarization-activated Cl currents reported in voltage-clamp studies. Outward current steps, with conductances of 38 pS, were recorded when the membrane patch was depolarized by more than +120 mV. Their amplitude and frequency increased at more positive potentials. The current was probably carried by an efflux of cations through a different set of channels. The resting membrane potential, measured unambiguously without contamination from the tonoplast, was –190±5 mV.  相似文献

Summary Chemical determination of the mineral content of a mature, healthy, high-yielding greenhouse tomato plant has shown that the total nutrient absorption is equivalent to 345 pounds per acre of nitrogen, 74 pounds per acre of phosphorus, 716 pounds per acre of potassium, 295 pounds per acre of calcium and 43 pounds per acre of magnesium. These figures form the basis for a more intelligent estimate of the fertilizer requirements of this crop than can be obtained from the more common empirical methods. The analysis of individual tissues of a whole plant harvested at mid-growth gives a clear picture of the distribution of nutrients throughout the plant.  相似文献

Hatching of embryos from their eggs involves either mechanical and/or chemical support. In particular enzymes are widely used in the animal kingdom to weaken the egg layers and facilitate the embryo's escape. Although numerous morphological and biochemical studies exist on the hatching glands of invertebrates (such as sea urchins, ascidians, insects) and vertebrates (teleosts, amphibians, and mammals), little is known about the morphology of the hatching glands (Hoyle organs) in cephalopod hatchlings.In this study, the internal gland structure and the external appearance of the Hoyle organ are compared among several cephalopod species (Idiosepius pygmaeus; Euprymna scolopes; Sepia officinalis; Loligo gahi; Sepioteuthis lessoniana; Architeuthis sp.; Octopus vulgaris; Tremoctopus gracilis; Argonauta hians). In almost all cases the glandular system is restricted to the posterior part of the dorsal mantle surface. Only Octopus and Argonauta lack a specific glandular structure in this body region and the animals apparently use other mechanisms to penetrate the egg layers.In all decapod species (Idiosepius; Euprymna; Sepia; Loligo; Sepioteuthis; Architeuthis) as well as in Tremoctopus only one specific cell type is present in the Hoyle organ, which synthesizes granular material. The secretory droplets are more or less uniform in electron density in Idiosepius, Euprymna and Tremoctopus but exhibit translucent inclusions in the other decapods. The time of gland development, first synthesis of secretory products and later degeneration after hatching vary between the species.The present study contributes to our knowledge of glandular systems in cephalopods and allows comparison with hatching structures in other invertebrates and vertebrates.  相似文献

Macrobenthos was studied in seven glacial bays situated along the Spitsbergen coast between 77 and 79°N. The fauna was dominated by deposit-feeding or carnivorous polychaetes and bivalves. Only 4 of 118 species identified in the collected material occurred in all the west Spitsbergen localities examined (the polychaetes Chaetozone/Tharyx sp., Cossura longocirrata, Lumbrinereis fragilis s.l. (sensu lato), and the bivalve Thyasira flexuosa). Clustering of samples showed a difference between the faunas of east and west Spitsbergen; the latter formed two subgroups, localities open to Atlantic waters and those from inner fjord basins. The fauna in open basins was dominated by cosmopolitan species, whereas arctic elements shares were higher in inner basins and predominated in the fauna in Bettybukta (east Spitsbergen). This indicates arctic, relict character of the inner fjords sites. The biomass ranged from 6 to 310 g/m2 and Shannon diversities from 0.49 to 2.54. A survey of protostelids in ponds of northeastern Germany showed a high degree of similarity between the species assemblages from submerged aquatic and terrestrial litter. Twelve species were recovered from 115 samples. A statistical analysis of species accumulation curves indicated that 90 % of the total diversity was recovered for both aquatic and terrestrial litter. All of the more common species were observed in both aquatic and terrestrial samples. However, 24 % of all cultures from terrestrial samples were positive for protostelids, compared with only 12 % for aquatic samples. An additional 20 samples collected from the water column did not yield any protostelids. The study indicates that vegetative stages of most protostelids seem to be able to survive and probably multiply on litter submerged in fresh water, but do not live as plankton. Most probably, submerged substrata are sinks for protostelid populations.  相似文献

A branched α-cyclodextrin is a derivative of an α-cyclodextrin with a branch consisting of an extra glucose unit. Its water solubility is considerably higher than that of the unbranched one. We have studied the high solubility of the molecule in aqueous solution by molecular dynamics simulations. Trajectories of the molecule at 293 K were calculated using GROMOS programs in three different environments, i.e., in vacuo, in the crystalline state, and in aqueous solution. A simulation in vacuo was carried out to explore stable conformations of the molecule in the isolated system. The quality of the simulations were examined by comparing the X-ray and the simulated crystal structures.The results of the simulations show three remarkable structural features of the molecule: self-inclusion with its branched portion, twist-boat conformation of a glucose ring, and wobbling of its macrocycle. Among these, the last feature is closely related to the water solubility of the molecule. The solubility of cyclodextrin appears to be mainly governed by its intramolecular interglucose hydrogen bonds, which inhibit hydration by solvent water molecules. The results of our simulations indicate that the capability to form hydrogen bonds in branched α-cyclodextrin decreased as the macrocycle of the molecule lost its regular circular shape. Such wobbling of the macrocycle was observed on a relatively short time scale (several picoseconds). An extra glucose unit introduced to α-cyclodextrin may cause the improved water solubility of the molecule through the greater wobbling motion of its macrocycle.  相似文献

-crotamine is a small toxic protein (42 amino acid residues with three disulphide bridges) present in the venom of Crotallus durissus terrificus. Molecular parameters (R g=13.7 Å, S=3,000 Å2, V=9,200 Å3 and D max=40 Å) were derived from SAXS curves obtained from a solution of this protein at pH=4.5. An excellent agreement between the experimental distance distribution curve and that calculated from a model consisting of two lobes linked by the Cys(18)-Cys(30) disulphide bridge.  相似文献

On the basis of immunochemical analyses of the main reserve protein ofPh. vulgaris, euphaseolin, in numerous cultivars ofPh. vulgaris, in additional 23Phaseolus species, and several representatives of further genera of Viciaceae and on the basis of the comparison of these data with morphological and genetical data the authors propose to separate the sectionEuphaseolus characterized by the presence of the protein euphaseolin. The species characterised by euphaseolin are closely related and capable of being crossed. The proposal requires an additional formal completion from the point of view of the conventions of classical systematies. Pyranine entrapped soylipid liposomes have been used as a model system to study the proton transport across membrane in the presence of A23187, a carboxylic ionophore specific for electroneutral exchange of divalent cations. An apparent rate constant (kapp) for transport of protons has been determined from the rate of change of fluorescence intensity of pyranine by stopped flow rapid kinetics in the presence of proton gradient The variation of kapp has been studied as a function of ionophore concentration and the results have been compared with gramicidin—a well known channel former under the similar experimental conditions. The rates thus obtained showed that A23187 is not only a simple carrier but also shows channel behaviour at high concentration of ionophore.  相似文献

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is by far the most common dementing illness of late life and is increasing with the ever-growing number of older adults, in particular, in developed countries. The disease is often referred to as the “Long-Goodbye” because the person with the illness slowly becomes lost to everyone a long time before the body finally gives out. Being able to detect AD earlier on during the course of the disease offers better prospects for the future, for AD individuals, their families and friends as well as on the economy, as a whole. Unfortunately, such a detection technique is not yet, available. However, there are a number of promising biological markers (biomarkers) that correlate well with clinical cognitive tests of individuals and/or postmortem histopathological manifestations of the disease, especially when at least two markers are used for the diagnosis. Biosensors are tools that combine a biochemical binding element to a signal conversion unit and are already being used in the study of some AD biomarkers. However, their use in clinical diagnosis remains a challenge. Introduction of nanotechnology leading to nanobiosensors has several potential advantages over other clinical and/or existing analytical tools, including increased assay speed, flexibility, reduced cost of diagnostic testing, potential to deliver molecular diagnostic tools to family general practitioners, and other health care systems. Even more important, nano-based assays have the potential to detect target proteins at attomolar concentration level. They are, therefore, being increasingly exploited for the detection of early metabolic changes associated with diseases. Because brain damage is irreversible, the use of nanotechnology is particularly important in AD and other neurodegenerative disorders. Nanosensors can also facilitate and enable pointofcare-testing (POCT). This article reviews the basic biochemical processes that lead to AD pathology, current biomarkers for AD, and the current role of nanosensor technology for the study of AD biomarkers. Furthermore, it discusses the huge potential of nanosensing to deliver new molecular diagnostic strategies to AD research.  相似文献
