Chromolaena odorata L. is a major weed of tropical plantations and pasture lands.Pareuchaetes pseudoinsulata Rego Barros [Lep.: Arctiidae] was mass-reared and released to control the weed on the Mariana Islands of Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan in the western Pacific. One year following establishment ofP. pseudoinsulata on Guam, the weed was reduced 100% at 3 of 4 sites monitored with fixed quadrats. Seed production was prevented if defoliation occurred prior to the beginning of the flowering season. If defoliation occurred shortly after flowering began, the developing seeds were eaten byP. pseudoinsulata or there was a significant reduction in weight and germination of seeds that matured. Eighteen months after establishing on Guam,P. pseudoinsulata had defoliated approximately 25,000 hectares of the weed. This is the 1st report on the quantitative impact of any control agent forC. odorata, and though the long term effect of the insect is still unknown, these results are encouraging.  相似文献

A high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) based micro-method for estimation of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) levels in single half nodes from the flowering stalks ofAvena fatua has been developed; this features a dual electrode coulometric electrochemical detector operating at a detection limit of c. 2 pg. Samples were prepared by solvent partitioning and preliminary fractionation with C18 Sep-Pak cartridges. Two stages of reversed phase ion pair HPLC were employed; the first was gradient elution with fluorescent detection, the second, isocratic elution with coulometric detection. The lower limit for estimation of IAA levels in purified extracts was c. 5 pg.  相似文献

Goniozus sensorius Gordh (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae) was recorded as a major parasite of the pumpkin caterpillar,Diaphania indica (Saunders) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). This paper provides detailed information on the oviposition behaviour ofG. sensorius. Prior to oviposition, the parasite temporarily paralyses the host larva. The paralysed condition lasts for about 2 h. The egg laying process on each larva requires 30 to 60 min. The maximum number of eggs are laid on the 6th and 7th segment, and none in the terminal segments. Generally, oviposition is restricted to 1 segment of the host larva and occasionally on 3 segments. The maximum number of eggs are laid on the 2nd and 3rd day after emergence and the mean number of eggs laid on each host larva was 7.1.  相似文献

Particulate membrane preparations have been isolated from culminatingDictyostelium discoideum cells. The preparations incorporated glucose from uridine 5′-diphosphate-glucose into a glucose polymer or polymers. These have been shown to be homopolymers ofβ-linked glucose. A high percentage (78% by methylation analysis) of the linkages formed are 1,4-linkages and a lower percentage (12%) are 1,3-linkages. The glucan-synthase complex present in the particulate membrane preparation has an apparent Km of 0.28 mM and a Vmax of 1.59 nmol·min?1·(mg protein)?1. The enzyme system is dependent upon Mg2+ and cellobiose for maximal activity, but is inhibited by millimolar levels of Ca2+. Particulate membrane preparations were made from cells at various times during a synchronous developmental time course and demonstrated that the glucan-synthase activity appeared at the tight-aggregate stage of development.  相似文献

Adenine requiring mutants of Serratia marcescens SM-6-F'lac + have been found to grow well in minimal-glucose medium solely supplemented with cAMP. From one of these ade strains double mutants (called ade cpd) were isolated which could no longer utilize cAMP but which still grew on 5′AMP. Dialyzed cell extracts (soluble fraction) of the double mutants, assayed for cAMP phosphodiesterase, were unable to hydrolyze cAMP whereas cell extracts of the parental strains yielded 5′AMP at a rate of 1.6–2.0 μmoles min−1 mg−1 protein. The loss of the phosphodiesterase activity in S. marcescens cpd W1181 did not cause an accumulation of large amounts of cAMP as was found for the diesterase-negative mutant AB257pc-1 of Escherichia coli. The induced synthesis of β-galactosidase in mutant cpd W 1181 showed about the same sensitivity to transient and permanent catabolite (glucose) repression as the corresponding cpd + strain. Starting from S. marcescens cpd W1181 three independent double mutants (called cpd cya) were isolated which required exogenous cAMP for utilizing various carbohydrates as carbon source, for motility and for the formation of extracellular lipase and the red pigment prodigiosine. The intracellular concentration of cAMP in these mutants, grown in nutrient broth, was 40–60% of that of the parental strain which is about 4×10−4 M. However, the adenylate cyclase in cell extracts of the mutants W1237 and W1270 was like that of the corresponding cya + strain (about 2×10−2 μmoles min−1 mg−1 protein).  相似文献
