Although ovipositing insects may predominantly use resources that lead to high offspring quality, exceptions to this rule have considerably aided understanding of oviposition decisions. We report the frequency of host species use by a solitary facultative hyperparasitoid, Brachymeria subrugosa Blanchard (Hymenoptera: Chalcididae). In our samples, the wasp attacks the large pupae of the moth Gonioterma indecora Zeller (Lepidoptera: Elachistidae), as well as the considerably smaller, and rarer, pupae of two of its other parasitoids. Consistent with conditional sex allocation models, the wasp produced mainly female offspring on the largest (moth) host, an unbiased sex ratio on the middle‐sized (parasitoid) host, and only males on the smallest (parasitoid) host. Adult offspring size was correlated with the size of the host attacked. These features strongly suggest that the two smaller, primary parasitoid, hosts produce lower‐quality offspring. Despite being more common, the proportion of hosts from which parasitoids emerged was lowest (14%) on the largest host species, and highest on the rarer middle‐sized (34%) and smallest (30%) hosts. This suggests that costs or constraints on attacking high‐quality primary hosts may be a selective force favouring the evolution of hyperparasitism.  相似文献

Abstract.
  • 1 We tested the hypothesis that biased sex ratios in the aphidiid parasitoid, Aphidius ervi, are the result of sex-specific mortality of immatures due to hyperparasitism. The solitary hyperparasitoid, Dendrocerus carpenteri, deposits its eggs on the prepupa or pupa of the primary parasitoid after its pea-aphid host is mummified.
  • 2 In dichotomous choice tests, females of D.carpenteri accepted immatures of both sexes of A.ervi with equal frequency. Independent of the sex of the primary parasitoid, the probability of a mummified pea aphid being hyperparasitized did not differ between large (adult at the time of death) and small (fourth nymphal instar) mummies.
  • 3 As predicted by‘host quality’models of offspring sex allocation, D.carpenteri produced a higher proportion of female than male offspring in large mummies. These laboratory results were supported by field data.
  • 4 Because hyperparasitism by D.carpenteri is random with regard to host sex, it should have no influence on optimal sex allocation by the primary parasitoid.

In solitary parasitoids, the mandibulate first instars behave aggressively towards potential competitors so that generally only one larva survives per host. A ‘failure of competition’ may result in facultative gregarious development, however. We used Ephedrus californicus Baker (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Aphidiinae), a solitary koinobiont parasitoid of aphids, to test two hypotheses in the laboratory that could explain facultative gregarious development. Gregarious development increased with the intensity of parasitism, with two (rarely three) parasitoids successfully developing in a single aphid. In heavily superparasitized hosts, interference between surviving larvae often caused abnormal pupation behaviour and inability to emerge from the mummy. The hypothesis that the survival of more than one larva per host is dependent on differences in larval age was not supported. The total body size in terms of dry mass of two males or two females developing together in the same host was higher than that of same‐sex counterparts developing singly. Females were larger than males with which they shared a host. Hypotheses about the evolutionary transition from a solitary to a gregarious lifestyle in parasitoid Hymenoptera have focused on lethal fighting between first instars but have ignored other constraints including immature mortality during later development and limiting host resources. Especially in species that pupate inside the dead host, specific requirements for pupation and emergence may determine whether one or several offspring per host can develop to adult.  相似文献

The reproductive success of female parasitoids is dependent on their ability to accurately assess the suitability of a host for larval development. For generalist parasitoids, which utilize a broad range of species and instars as hosts, a set of assessment criteria determines whether a host is accepted or rejected. The suitability of a host, however, can only be imperfectly assessed by the female parasitoid, which can result in the selection of lesser quality hosts for oviposition. In this study we explored the disparity between host quality and host preference using the generalist koinobiotic parasitoid Aphidius ervi Haliday (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) and the host Aulacorthum solani (Harris) (Homoptera: Aphididae), the foxglove aphid. The second instar hosts produced the highest level of reproductive success, while third and fourth instars resulted in a substantially reduced reproductive performance. When given a choice of host instars, parasitoids preferred the older hosts for oviposition disregarding their reduced suitability for larval development. Results are discussed in context of mechanisms involved in A. ervi host selection and biases in the criteria used to assess hosts that may arise when parasitoids transfer host species between generations.  相似文献

  • 1 For their larval development, parasitoids depend on the quality and quantity of resources provided by a single host. Therefore, a close relationship is predicted between the size of the host at parasitism and the size of the emerging adult wasp. This relationship is less clear for koinobiont than for idiobiont parasitoids.
  • 2 As size differentiation in host species exhibiting sexual size dimorphism (SSD) is likely to occur already during larval development, in koinobiont larval endoparasitoids the size of the emerging adult may also be constrained based on the sex of the host caterpillar.
  • 3 Sex‐specific growth trajectories were compared in unparasitised Plutella xylostella caterpillars and in second and fourth instar hosts that were parasitised by the solitary larval koinobiont endoparasitoid Diadegma semiclausum. Both species exhibit SSD, where females are significantly larger than males.
  • 4 Healthy female P. xylostella caterpillars developed significantly faster than their male conspecifics. Host regulation induced by D. semiclausum parasitism depended on the instar attacked. Parasitism in second‐instar caterpillars reduced growth compared to healthy unparasitised caterpillars, whereas parasitism in fourth‐instar caterpillars arrested development. The reduction in growth was most pronounced in hosts producing male D. semiclausum.
  • 5 Parasitism itself had the largest impact on host growth. SSD in the parasitoid is mainly the result of differences in growth rate of the parasitoid–host complex producing male and female wasps and differences in exploitation of the host resources. Female wasps converted host biomass more efficiently into adult biomass than males.

寄主大小模型认为寄生蜂后代性比与寄主大小相关,寄生蜂倾向于在大寄主上产出更多雌性后代,在小寄主上产出更多雄性后代.探讨了以家蝇蛹为寄主时,蝇蛹佣小蜂后代产量和性比变化;单次寄生情况下,寄主大小及寄生顺序对寄生蜂后代性比等影响.结果表明,蝇蛹佣小蜂的产卵期为(8.93±3.34)d,单头雌蜂能产雌性后代(34.11±16.34)头和雄性后代(11.04±8.87)头,且雄性百分比为0.24±0.11.随成蜂日龄的增大,寄生蜂产生雄性后代的比率显著增加.蝇蛹佣小蜂在寄生家蝇蛹时,会优先选择寄生个体较大的蛹;在单次寄生的情况下,蝇蛹佣小蜂倾向于在较大的家蝇蛹内产出更多的雌性后代.  相似文献

  • 1 Data mostly from the published literature were used to assess the effect of galling on the number of parasitoid species per host species in the phylogeny of nematine sawflies from free external feeders (colonial and solitary) to leaf gallers and shoot gallers.
  • 2 The strongest effects of galling were the total elimination of the species-rich cocoon-attacking guild of parasitoids, and eonymphal parasitoids, from the parasitoid community on shoot gallers, all of which are in the genus Euura.
  • 3 All tachinid larval parasitoids were also eliminated by the galling habit.
  • 4 The cumulative effects of these exclusions resulted in a decline in mean number of parasitoid species per host species from almost sixteen species on external colonial feeders to 4.0 species on shoot gallers.
  • 5 General patterns in per cent parasitism by non-tachinid and tachinid larval parasitoids, eonymphal and cocoon parasitoids, on exposed feeders to shoot gallers, showed declines in non-tachinid attack and elimination of tachinid, eonymphal and cocoon parasitoids. But leaf gallers tended to be attacked more than exposed feeders by non-tachinid larval parasitoids.

  • 1 The pay-off from an egg laid in a parasitized host is an important parameter in models on adaptive superparasitism in solitary insect parasitoids.
  • 2 For Leptopilina heterotoma, a parasitoid of larval Drosophila, the pay-off from a second egg laid in a host is 0.43 offspring when the interval between the two ovipositions is less than 3h. For longer intervals, this pay-off decreases to almost zero for an interval of 24 h.
  • 3 When a female encountering a parasitized host is able to estimate the interval since the first oviposition, it is expected that she will take this into account in her host selection decisions. This is, however, not in the direct interest of the female that lays the first egg, and marks the host.
  • 4 We studied whether superparasitism in hosts containing a young egg is more common than in hosts containing an older egg, when searching in a patch containing once-parasitized and unparasitized hosts.
  • 5 The acceptance/encounter ratio of parasitized hosts increased for intervals longer than 6h, as predicted when the interests of the marking female and the longevity of the mark are taken into account.

The parasitoid community dynamics of an agromyzid honeysuckle leafminer, Chromatomyia suikazurae (Agromyzidae, Diptera) were studied between 1981 and 1990 in a natural forest in Kyoto, Japan. The parasitoid fauna composed three koinobionts (all larval-pupal solitary parasitoids) and 22 idiodiont species (11 larval solitary, nine pupal solitary and one pupal gregarious). The parasitoid community was dominated by early-attacking oligophagous braconid koinobionts at early periods, but was gradually displaced by late-attacking polyphagous eulophid idiobionts. Accordingly, the diversity index of the parasitoid community peaked at an intermediate point in the intra-generational succession. The succeeding attack-in-waves by the late-attacking idiobionts greatly reduced not only the survival rates of early-attacking parasitoid larvae but also the survival rates of hosts. The density-dependence observed in the host pupal mortality was thought to result from density-dependent host-switching by a keystone polyphagous pupal idiobiont parasitoid, Chrysocharis pubens, whereas high host pupal mortality was potentially attained by an early-attacking koinobiont braconid. Supposed aggregation of polyphagous parasitoids at high host density resulted in intense within-host competition and in an increase of host-feeding attack, both of which contributed to low emergence rates of parasitoids at high host densities. Parasitoid emergence rates were also reduced at low host densities, probably by inter- and intra-specific hyperparasitism among oligophagous parasitoids for limited hosts. The regulation effects of the species-rich parasitoid community upon the host population dynamics are thought to derive from succeeding attack-in-waves by polyphagous late-attacking idiobionts, especially by the keystone species.  相似文献

Solitary parasitoids generally produce only one offspring per host. Dendrocerus carpenteri (Curtis) (Hymenoptera: Megaspilidae) develops as an idiobiont ectoparasitoid on prepupae and pupae of primary aphid parasitoids inside the mummified aphid host. Females normally deposit a single egg but superparasitize when suitable hosts are scarce. We show that facultative gregarious development may occur but is constrained by resource competition between larvae. The probability of more than one offspring surviving increased with the intensity of parasitism; an age difference of ≤9 h between older and younger first instars did not promote gregarious development. Two female parasitoids and, rarely, up to three male parasitoids could develop together. Average body size in terms of dry mass did not differ between singly developing females and the combined mass of two females sharing host resources, but the combined mass of gregarious males was greater than that of their singly developing counterparts. Females were 3× more likely to eclose from single than gregarious mummies. The amount of host resources available per larva declines with increasing clutch size, in turn causing a corresponding reduction of adult size and size‐dependent fitness attributes. We suggest that competition for limiting host supplies may influence the transition from solitary to gregarious development and should be considered in models of clutch size evolution in parasitoid wasps.  相似文献

Host recognition and use in female parasitoids strongly relies on host fidelity, a plastic behavior which can significantly restrict the host preferences of parasitoids, thus reducing the gene flow between parasitoid populations attacking different insect hosts. However, the effect of migrant males on the genetic differentiation of populations has been frequently ignored in parasitoids, despite its known impact on gene flow between populations. Hence, we studied the extent of gene flow mediated by female and male parasitoids by assessing sibship relationships among parasitoids within and between populations, and its impact on geographic and host‐associated differentiation in the aphid parasitoid Aphidius ervi. We report evidences of a high gene flow among parasitoid populations on different aphid hosts and geographic locations. The high gene flow among parasitoid populations was found to be largely male mediated, suggested by significant differences in the distribution of full‐sib and paternal half‐sib dyads of parasitoid populations.  相似文献

  • 1 Atypical of the parasitoid Hymenoptera, female Goniozus nephantidis Muesebeck remain with offspring until they pupate. This behaviour will only have evolved if the consequent reduction in fecundity is outweighed by fitness returns.
  • 2 G.nephantidis competes for hosts with conspecific and non-conspecific parasitoids. The effectiveness of G.nephantidis at deterring superparasitism and multiparasitism is tested. Brood survivorships were compared when G.nephantidis and Bracon hebetor Say intrude on hosts with the mother present and absent and with offspring at different developmental stages.
  • 3 Laying by the intruder reduced brood survivorship. Guarding reduced oviposition on unparasitized hosts by intruding females, and prevented superparasitism of hosts with egg broods. Hosts with larval broods were rarely superparasitized. Multiparasitism was common except on hosts with guarded larval broods, but even here survivorship was reduced.
  • 4 Competitive asymmetries determined the outcome of contests for possession of host resources.

The sex-allocation behaviour of the solitary ectoparasitoid Dinarmus basalis (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) was investigated by examining the female's response to two proximal factors: the host-patch characteristics and the conspecific female density in the patch. The offspring sex-ratio of single females presented with unparasitised hosts was female biased (approximately three daughters to one son in the progeny) whatever the host density tested. The sex-ratio in the presence of hosts parasitised by a conspecific 48 h beforehand was male biased. The proportion of male offspring also increased when the number of conspecific females exploiting the patch changed from a single female to a group of females, whatever the group size. No sexual differences in mortality as a result of larval competition on superparasitised hosts were observed. The offspring sex-ratios observed in response to the host-patch characteristics were the result of manipulation of the egg fertilisation by the females during the oviposition phase. Thus, the variability of the sex-ratio in response to an increase in the number of conspecific females in the same patch represented a reduction in egg fertilisation. These results are analysed with regard to the predictions of Local Mate Competition theory and the females' host discrimination ability.  相似文献

Superparasitism is a widespread phenomenon. Having accepted superparasitism, mated female parasitoids must decide on the sex of each egg they subsequently lay into the same host. Theory predicts that this decision is either based on host quality, when more male eggs are laid in hosts that are already parasitized because they are perceived to be of poorer quality; or more eggs are laid of the sex that is most likely to be a strong larval competitor, i.e. generally females.Anastatus disparis is a facultative endoparasitic egg parasitoid. We used ‘artificial’ hosts to explore outcomes of decision making by A. disparis during superparasitism under a manipulated absence of larval competition. When only one egg was laid it was always female. As the number of eggs laid increased, so more of them were male. This supports the theory that oviposition decisions are based on host quality; more male eggs were laid in hosts that were already parasitized and thus of poorer quality.In a second experiment, eggs were exposed to parasitoids for different periods of time. Half the eggs were dissected to determine the number of parasitoid eggs that had been laid. The remaining eggs were incubated and the number and sex of offspring that ultimately emerged, following larval competition, were recorded. Under superparasitism conditions fierce larval competition ensued; only one offspring survived and they were predominantly female.In conclusion, oviposition decisions by female A. disparis accepting self-superparasitism were made based on host quality.  相似文献

The influence of kairomones on the numerical response of the parasitoidTrioxys indicus against its hostAphis craccivora at its varying density was studied. The kairomones (applied as aqueous extract of the host) significantly enhanced the rate of parasitisation and multiplication and the area of discovery of the parasitoid and also the K-values of mortality of the host at all parasitoid densities introduced (1, 2, 4, 8, 12 and 16 parasitoids) into troughs having about 200 hosts. The sex-ratio of F1 offspring decreased at lower parasitoid densities and remained more or less unchanged at higher parasitoid densities after the application of kairomones. The present findings indicate that if kairomones are applied properly, the number of hosts destroyed by a stimulated parasitoid will be about 200, twice the number reported earlier, thus fewer parasitoids will be needed to regulate an estimated population of the hosts.   相似文献

The aphid parasitoid,Aphidius ervi Haliday, overwinters in larval diapause. The possibility that the parasitoid might prefer sexual (oviparae) rather than asexual females (virginoparae) as overwintering hosts (oviparae predominate in autumn when host numbers are generally declining) was tested by comparing these aphid morphs as potential hosts. Two host species were also examined, the pea aphid,Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), and the blackberry aphid,Sitobion fragariae (Walker). The parasitoids took longer to develop inS. fragariae than inA. pisum but the development of non-diapausingA. ervi was similar in sexual and asexual females. This observation, together with the greater variation in the duration of the different parasitoid stadia inS. fragariae, indicated that the parasitoid is specialized on the pea aphid. In photophases of 12 h and longer, the proportion ofA. ervi entering diapause inA. pisum oviparae was higher than in virginoparae. The critical daylength (where 50% of parasitoids entered diapause) was therefore longer in oviparae (12.6 h) than in virginoparae (11.7 h) with the inference that parasitoids developing in the oviparae would enter diapause earlier in the field. InS. fragariae, critical day-lengths were similar in both aphid morphs. The duration of diapause was unaffected by host morph and emergence in short days (10:14 L:D) occurred over a long period (c. 60 days).  相似文献

Insects harbour a wild diversity of symbionts that can spread and persist within populations by providing benefits to their host. The pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum maintains a facultative symbiosis with the bacterium Hamiltonella defensa, which provides enhanced resistance against the aphid parasitoid Aphidius ervi. Although the mechanisms associated with this symbiotic‐mediated protection have been investigated thoroughly, little is known about its evolutionary effects on parasitoid populations. We used an experimental evolution procedure in which parasitoids were exposed either to highly resistant aphids harbouring the symbiont or to low innate resistant hosts free of H. defensa. Parasitoids exposed to H. defensa gained virulence over time, reaching the same parasitism rate as those exposed to low aphid innate resistance only. A fitness reduction was associated with this adaptation as the size of parasitoids exposed to H. defensa decreased through generations. This study highlighted the considerable role of symbionts in host–parasite co‐evolutionary dynamics.  相似文献

Host manipulation is a strategy used by some parasites to enhance their transmission. These parasites use a combination of neuropharmacological, psychoneuroimmunological, genomic/proteomic, or symbiont-mediated mechanisms to manipulate their hosts. Bodyguard manipulation occurs when parasitized hosts guard parasitoid pupae to protect them from their natural enemies. Bodyguard-manipulated hosts exhibit altered behaviours only after the egression of parasitoid prepupae. Behavioural changes in post-parasitoid egressed hosts could have resulted from their altered physiology. Previous studies have shown that gregarious manipulative parasitoids induce multiple physiological changes in their host, but the physiological changes induced by solitary manipulative parasitoids are unknown. Microplitis pennatulae Ranjith & Rajesh (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a larval parasitoid of Psalis pennatula Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Erebidae). After the egression of parasitoid prepupae, P. pennatula stops its routine activities and protects the parasitoid pupa from hyperparasitoids by body thrashes. In this study, we looked into the physiological changes induced by the solitary manipulative parasitoid, M. pennatulae, in its host, P. pennatula, during various stages of parasitization. We considered octopamine concentration and phenoloxidase (PO) activity as biomarkers of physiological change. We also examined whether M. pennatulae has a symbiotic virus and whether the wasp transfers it to the host during parasitization. We found that octopamine concentration was low in the pre-parasitoid egressed host, but it was elevated after the parasitoid egressed. Phenoloxidase activity was lower in the pre- and post-parasitoid egressed host than in the unparasitized host. We also detected symbiotic bracovirus (BV) in the wasp ovaries and isolated the BV virulence gene from the parasitised host. Our study suggests that solitary parasitoids also induce multiple physiological changes to influence the host behaviour to their advantage, as is the case with the gregarious parasitoids.  相似文献

The gall‐forming midge Rhopalomyia californica was exposed experimentally to parasitism and predation during only the egg stage, during only the larval stage, during neither stage, or during both stages. 2. The combined action of natural enemies that attack during both the egg stage and the larval stage led to the lowest number of midges and total insects (midges + parasitoids) in the next generation, and the highest percentage parasitism. 3. The larval parasitoid killed a large fraction of hosts without producing new parasitoid offspring, while there is some indication that the egg parasitoid on its own tended to produce the most parasitoid offspring. The contrasting implications of host mortality versus parasitoid production for biological control are discussed. 4. Exposure to larval parasitoids resulted in a reduction in the number of egg parasitoid offspring produced, but exposure to the egg parasitoid did not affect the number of larval parasitoid offspring produced significantly.  相似文献
