We review the distributions and functions of mycorrhizas and dark septate root endophytes in polar regions. Arbuscular mycorrhizas (AM) are present in the Arctic and Antarctic to 82 °N and 63 °S, respectively, with fine endophyte being the dominant form of AM in roots at higher latitudes. Ecto- (ECM) and ericoid (ERM) mycorrhizas both occur in the Arctic to 79 °N, owing to the presence of species of Salix, Dryas, Vaccinium and Cassiope to this latitude. ECM and ERM are not present in Antarctic ecosystems, owing to an absence of suitable hosts. Arbutoid and orchid mycorrhizas are infrequent in the Arctic, whilst the latter are present at one location in the sub-Antarctic. Data from studies of AM, ECM and ERM colonisation along a latitudinal transect through the Arctic indicate that the frequency of plant species not colonised by mycorrhizas increases at higher latitudes, largely owing to an increase in non-mycorrhizal and a decrease in obligately mycorrhizal plant families at more northerly locations. A separate group of root- and rhizoid-associated fungi, the dark septate root endophytes (DSE), are widespread to 82 °N and 77 °S, and are apparently more frequent than mycorrhizal fungi in polar regions. The functions of DSE are largely unclear, but studies suggest beneficial effects on plant growth under defined conditions. We advocate further research into the effects of DSE on their host plants in polar regions.  相似文献

The leafy liverwort Lophozia excisa, which is colonised by basidiomycete fungi in other biomes and which evidence suggests may be colonised by mycorrhizal fungi in Antarctica, was sampled from Léonie Island in the southern maritime Antarctic (67°36′ S, 68°21′ W). Microscopic examination of plants indicated that fungal hyphae colonised 78% of the rhizoids of the liverwort, apparently by entering the tips of rhizoids prior to growing into their bases, where they formed hyphal coils. Extensive colonisation of stem medullary cells by hyphae was also observed. DNA was extracted from surface-sterilised liverwort tissues and sequenced following nested PCR, using the primer set ITS1F/TW14, followed by a second round of amplification using the ITSSeb3/TW13 primer set. Neighbour-joining analyses showed that the sequences obtained nested in Sebacinales clade B as a 100% supported sister group to Sebacinales sequences from the leafy liverworts Lophozia sudetica, L. incisa and Calypogeia muelleriana sampled from Europe. Direct PCR using the fungal specific primer set ITS1F/ITS4 similarly identified fungi belonging to Sebacinales clade B as the principal colonists of L. excisa tissues. These observations indicate the presence of a second mycothallus in Antarctica and support the previous suggestion that the Sebacinales has a wide geographical distribution.  相似文献

A resynthesis study was conducted to clarify the relationship between the root endophyte, Heteroconium chaetospira and the ericaceous plant, Rhododendron obtusum var. kaempferi. The host plant roots were recovered 2 months after inoculation, and the infection process and colonization pattern of the fungus were observed under a microscope. The hyphae of H. chaetospira developed structures resembling ericoid mycorrhizas, such as hyphal coils within the host epidermal cells. These structures were morphologically the same as previously reported ericoid mycorrhizal structures. The frequencies of hyphal coils within the epidermal cells of host roots ranged from 13 to 20%. H. chaetospira did not promote or reduce host plant growth. This is the first reported study that H. chaetospira is able to form structures resembling mycorrhizas within the roots of ericaceous plants.  相似文献

The interaction between mycorrhiza and leaf endophytes (Neotyphodium sp.) was studied in three Poa bonariensis populations, a native grass, differing significantly in endophyte infection. The association between endophytes and mycorrhizal fungi colonisation was assessed by analysing plant roots collected from the field. We found that roots from endophyte-infected populations showed a significantly higher frequency of colonisation by mycorrhizal fungi and that soil parameters were not related to endophyte infection or mycorrhiza colonization. In addition, we did not observe significant differences in the number of AM propagules in soils of the three populations sites. We also report the simultaneous development of Paris-type and Arum-type mycorrhiza morphology within the same root systems of P. bonariensis. The co-occurrence of both colonisation types in one and the same root system found in the three populations, which differed in Neotyphodium infection, suggests that foliar endophytes do not determine AM morphology. The percentage of root length colonised by different types of fungal structures (coils, arbuscules, longitudinal hyphae and vesicles) showed significant and positive differences in arbuscular frequency associated with endophyte infection, whereas the much smaller amounts of vesicles and hyphal coils did not differ significantly.  相似文献

Summary Six species of Stereocaulon and one unnamed taxon (close to S. glabrum) are reported from South Georgia, the maritime Antarctic islands and Antarctic Peninsula. S. caespitosum is new to the western sub-Antarctic. Variations in morphology and secondary chemistry are provided, and the ecology and geographical distribution in the sub-Antarctic and Antarctic biomes are given for each taxon.  相似文献

Abstract

Contrary to the generally accepted hypothesis that bryophyte fertility decreases with increasing latitude and therefore climatic severity, a detailed study of bryophyte reproductive strategies at sites in the southern maritime Antarctic (68–72°S) has revealed that an unexpectedly high proportion of species is capable of producing sporophytes. Of the regional bryoflora, 43% (19 species; 17 mosses, 2 liverworts) in Marguerite Bay and 47% (17 species; 16 mosses, 1 liverwort) in Alexander Island are known to produce sporophytes, although the number fruiting at comparable latitudes on the colder and more arid Antarctic continent is less (33%). These numbers and proportions are much greater than were previously known at such relatively high southern polar latitudes. Sporophytes of several species are recorded for the first time within the Antarctic biome, while those of two liverworts (Lophozia excisa and Cephaloziella varians) are reported for the first time south of 62°S. High incidence of sporophyte production is attributed to locally favourable microclimatic conditions producing small-scale 'oases'. The large majority of fertile mosses are monoecious short acrocarps growing on rather calcareous soils. Spore production and size data for a number of species are compared with previously published studies of the same or closely related species from the northern maritime Antarctic and sub-Antarctic, but no consistent trends are revealed between species over the latitudinal gradient.  相似文献

The roots of Gaultheria poeppiggi (Ericaceae) were examined for fungal symbiont colonization. Typical structures of ericoid mycorrhizas (hyphae and intracellular coil hyphae complexes), dark septate fungal endophytes (hyphae and sclerotia), and arbuscular mycorrhizas (hyphae, coils, vesicles and arbuscules) were found in the roots of all the individuals examined. The evolutionarily derived position of Gaultheria within the Ericales may suggest that G. poeppiggi recently acquired the ability to form arbuscular mycorrhizas rather than having retained it from ancestral lines.  相似文献

Under laboratory conditions, nonpathogenic, endophytic Fusarium oxysporum inflicts high mortality among banana weevils and nematodes. Following inoculation into banana (Musa spp.) tissue cultured plants, successful colonisation is necessary for efficient biological control of these pests. The pattern of root and rhizome colonisation by two nonpathogenic Ugandan F. oxysporum strains (V2w2 and III4w1) in cv. Nabusa (AAA‐EA) was investigated using light microscopy. Percentage of colonisation in the rhizomes (93%) was higher than in the roots (56%), but hyphal density in the roots (0.30 mm?2) was higher than in the rhizomes (0.21 mm?2). The root bases were better colonised (76%) than root midsections (53%) or tips (39%). Both the strains colonised the roots and the rhizomes, with numerous hyphae infecting the hypodermis but fewer infecting the cortex. Colonisation of vascular tissues was not recorded. Despite the presence of hyphae in intercellular and intracellular spaces of the roots and the rhizomes, normal cell structure was observed. Our report provides the first in situ observation and quantification of endophyte colonisation in banana. The study demonstrated the ability of F. oxysporum strains V2w2 and III4w1 to penetrate intact host tissues and recolonise the host internally upon inoculation, an important step for their suitability as biological control agents.  相似文献

Aim Encrusting faunal communities on rocks were examined from Southern Ocean intertidal and subtidal (6 m) zones to investigate potential change with latitude. Location The site locations were South Georgia (54°S [sub-Antarctic]), Signy Island (60.5°S [maritime Antarctic]) and Adelaide Island (68°S [high Antarctic]). Methods The number of taxa, degree of colonization and bryozoan growth and mortality were measured. Results The communities present were relatively simple in terms of composition and interactions. Spirorbid polychaetes (Annelida) and cheilostomatid bryozoans were the principal components. The community simplicity and dominance of unitary (compared to colonial) fauna increased with latitude. Mean annual mortality of subtidal cheilostomatids also significantly increased with latitude. The number of bryozoan species and potential aspects of community complexity increased with latitude. The growth of the bryozoan Inversiula nutrix increased with latitude reversing the general trend of decreased growth rate. Conclusions These findings suggest that disturbance may significantly increase with latitude within the Southern Ocean. The apparent reversal of typical latitudinal growth trends is probably a result of classical island biogeography, with species decreasing away from a centre of high diversity.  相似文献

The contribution of hyphae of Glomus mosseae (Nicol. and Gerd.) Gerd. and Trappe (BEG 107) to the acquisition of mineral nitrogen by Triticum aestivum L. cv. Hano (wheat) was tested under conditions of low P and high N (+N−P) or low N (−N−P). Mycorrhizal colonisation increased the shoot dry weight and plant tissue concentrations of P and cations. However, N tissue concentrations of mycorrhizal plants were not increased, although nitrate reductase activities were significantly higher (in vivo activity) in +N−P mycorrhizal compared to non-mycorrhizal roots. Severe plant N deficiency reduced the percentage root length colonised (but not the percentage viable colonisation), hyphal length, total 15 N uptake by hyphae and dry weight of mycorrhizal plants. Although mycorrhizal colonisation did not affect the overall plant N status, hyphae transported 1% (−N−P) and 7% (+N−P) of the 15 N-labelled NH4NO3 to mycorrhizal plants over 48 h. The higher rate of hyphal N uptake was apparently related to the more extensive hyphal growth at the higher level of plant N supply. However, the hyphal N supply was not sufficiently high to sustain adequate N nutrition of the plants supplied with very low amounts of N to the roots. Conversely, a sufficient N supply to the roots was important for the development of an extensive mycelium.  相似文献

The composition and distribution of microphytoplankton assemblages in the vicinity of South Georgia were examined during a krill survey conducted during voyage 119 the RV Africana in austral summer (January/February) 1994. Microphytoplankton distribution was studied at 83 stations along a zig-zag transect in the waters surrounding South Georgia. Oceanographic and zooplankton data suggest that conditions were anomalous during the investigation, in that sub-Antarctic surface waters had probably been advected southwards and were present around the island. The two most widely distributed species were Corethron criophilum and Eucampia antarctica, which were recorded at all stations sampled. Also well-represented amongst the microphytoplankton assemblages were temperate, neritic species such as Chaetoceros atlanticus, Proboscia alata and Odontella weissflogii. This can probably be related to the intrusion of sub-Antarctic surface waters unusually far south. Cluster and ordination analysis identified three distinct groupings of stations in the waters surrounding the islands. These were found to the east, west and north of the islands. The diatom groupings identified during this investigation broadly correspond to three water masses previously described in the vicinity of South Georgia. Despite the anomalous hydrographical conditions that existed during the investigation, the differences in phytoplankton were negligible when compared to normal years. Ericaceae associate with a wide spectrum of root mycobionts, but the most common are ascomycetous ericoid mycorrhizal fungi and dark septate endophytes (DSE), followed by basidiomycetous fungi and glomeracean arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. We investigated distribution and morphological diversity of ericoid mycorrhizae (ErM), DSE associations, ectomycorrhizae (EcM) and arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) in hair roots of six European native Rhododendron species and found that i) while EcM and AM were absent, ErM and DSE associations were simultaneously present in all screened plants; ii) their levels were negatively correlated, suggesting Ericaceae preference for certain root-fungus association in certain habitats; iii) the highest ErM colonization occurred at sites in southern and central Europe, while the highest DSE colonization was found in a subarctic site in northern Finland and in a subalpine site in the Carpathians, suggesting a latitudinal/altitudinal shift in Ericaceae root-fungus associations; iv) some mycelia could simultaneously form structures corresponding to ErM and DSE association, which occasionally resulted in a unique ectendomycorrhizal colonization comprising an intercellular parenchymatous net and intracellular hyphal coils. These results indicate frequent interactions between ErM fungi and DSE in roots of European rhododendrons and a morphological continuum between ErM and DSE associations. The new ectendomycorrhizal type deserves further investigation.  相似文献

We investigated the relationships between fungal community composition, latitude and a range of physicochemical parameters in 58 soils sampled from a 2370 km latitudinal gradient between South Georgia (54°S, 38°W) in the sub-Antarctic and Mars Oasis (72°S, 68°W) on Alexander Island in the southern maritime Antarctic. Our study, which is based on approximately ten times the number of samples used in previous similar studies, indicates that latitude and its associated environmental parameters are not related to fungal community composition. Significant changes in the composition of soil fungal communities were observed in relation to gradients of the ratio of total organic carbon to nitrogen, and, to a lesser extent, soil pH.  相似文献

Fungi were isolated from the roots of 17 plant species from the families Apiaceae, Cunoniaceae, Cyperaceae, Droseraceae, Fabaceae-Mimosoideae, Lomandraceae, Myrtaceae, Pittosporaceae, Proteaceae and Stylidiaceae at a sclerophyll forest site in New South Wales, Australia. Internal transcribed spacer (ITS) restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and sequence comparisons indicated that the isolated fungi had affinities to a range of ascomycetes, basidiomycetes and zygomycetes. Four RFLP types had closest affinities to previously identified Helotiales ericoid mycorrhizal (ERM) or Oidiodendron spp. Isolates representing six RFLP types, which were variously isolated from all 17 plant species, formed ERM coils in hair root epidermal cells of Woollsia pungens (Ericaceae) under gnotobiotic conditions. Three of these isolates formed intercellular hyphae, intracellular hyphae and/or microsclerotia, which are typical of dark septate endophyte infection, in roots of Stylidium productum (Stylidiaceae), indicating an ability to form different types of association with roots of different hosts. Overall the data indicate that a broad range of plant taxa may act as repositories for ERM fungi in sclerophyll forest soil.  相似文献

Ericaceae are obligatory associated with symbiotic fungi forming several, distinctive categories of mycorrhizas. While ericoid, arbutoid, and monotropoid mycorrhizas are known since many years from ericads of the northern hemisphere and the ericoid mycorrhiza also from Australia, a further mycorrhizal category with hyphal sheath, Hartig net, and intracellular colonization was described by us recently and termed cavendishioid mycorrhiza because it was found on Cavendishia nobilis, a species belonging to the Andean clade (Vaccinioideae) of Ericaceae. As the previous findings indicated a correlation between the mycorrhizal category and the systematic position of Ericaceae, we tested the hypothesis that other ericads of the Andean clade might also form cavendishioid mycorrhizas, while ericads occurring in the same area but not belonging to the Andean clade might not. Mycorrhizas of 20 different ericaceous species, 15 belonging to the Andean clade and 5 to other Vaccinioideae or Ericoideae, were sampled in the tropical mountain rain forest area of South Ecuador and investigated by light and electron microscopy. All the 15 members of the Andean clade ericads displayed a hyphal sheath, as well as inter- and intracellular colonization by hyphae as was found on Cavendishia previously. The five species not belonging to the Andean clade ericads displayed only intracellular colonization by hyphae and hence were typical ericoid mycorrhizal. Ultrastructural studies revealed Sebacinales and ascomycetes as mycorrhiza formers in both associations even within one single cell. The results thus support the hypothesis that the Andean clade of Ericaceae forms mycorrhizas distinct from the arbutoid category and most likely presents an independent evolutionary line in the Ericaceae derived from the ericoid mycorrhizas, justifying the new term “cavendishioid mycorrhiza”.  相似文献

Mycorrhizal fungi, to be effective for the plant, must be able to transfer mineral nutrient elements from sites of uptake at hyphal tips across various distances to the exchange region in the mycorrhiza. Vacuoles are likely to be important in this transport, since they contain elements of nutritional significance in abundance. In tip cells of hyphae of most fungi –- known to include three ectomycorrhizal basidiomycetes, an ericoid mycobiont, and two arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi –- the vacuoles form a motile tubular reticulum. The vacuoles are most active in hyphal tips, but non-motile vacuoles at a distance from the tip can be induced to become motile by environmental changes. Neither the tubular vacuolar reticulum nor its contents are properly preserved by conventional fixation and embedding. Vacuolar tubules are readily shown in vivo with fluorescent tracers, throughout the extramatrical mycelium and in outer hyphae of the sheath in eucalypt mycorrhizas synthesised with Pisolithus sp., but they have proved harder to label in field-collected ectomycorrhizas and ericoid mycorrhizas. Freeze-substitution does preserve the structure of vacuoles and vacuolar tubules, and careful anhydrous techniques allow them to be microanalysed, indicating high content of K and P in vacuoles of hyphal tips, and also in sheath and Hartig net of ectomycorrhizas. Vacuoles contain polyphosphate in diffuse, non-granular form. Polyphosphate is present right up to the tip region of hyphae as well as in sheath and Hartig net: thus important mineral nutrient elements are present at both ends of the long hyphal transport pathway. Exactly what happens in between, however, remains to be elucidated.  相似文献

Summary The concept and nomenclature for the elements of teliospore walls in smut fungi are presented and a survey of teliosporogenesis is given, as seen by light and transmission electron microscopy. Four developmental types are distinguished: the Ustilago, Microbotryum, Tilletia, and Entorrhiza type. In the Ustilago type, sporogenous hyphae are completely segmented into teliospore initials which are embedded in a hyaline matrix formed by gelatinised hyphal walls (found in species ofAnthracoidea, Cintractia, Heterotolyposporium, Kuntzeomyces, Macalpinomyces, Melanopsichium, Sporisorium, Testicularia, Tolyposporium junci, Trichocintractia, and species ofUstilago infecting members of the family Poaceae). In the Microbotryum type, septate sporogenous hyphae are also completely segmented into teliospore initials, however, they are not surrounded by a hyaline matrix (Microbotryum, Sphacelotheca, Ustilago spp. infecting dicotyledons). A yeast-like budding of teliosporogenic cells is observed for some species ofMicrobotryum, Sphacelotheca, andUstilago infecting dicotyledons. In the Tilletia type, teliospores differentiate locally in the sporogenous hyphae, in an apical or intercalary position, without a hyaline matrix (Conidiosporomyces, Doassinga, Entyloma, Erratomyces, Ingoldiomyces, Neovossia, Oberwinkleria, Rhamphospora, Tilletia). In all these types, the teliospore initials first develop a hyaline sheath under which the ornamentation, the exosporium, sometimes a middle layer, and the endosporium are successively deposited by the fungal cell. In the Entorrhiza type, the teliospores develop inside vital host cells with the wall of the sporogenous hypha included into the teliospore wall. The fungus develops a middle layer and an electron-transparent endosporium inside the hyphal wall while a layer forming the ornamentation is deposited onto the hyphal wall, probably by vesicles of dictyosomes of the host cell.Part 164 in the series Studies in Heterobasidiomycetes from the Botanical Institute, University of Tübingen  相似文献

The high number of bipolar and widespread bryophyte and microbial taxa in the Antarctic flora suggests the effective Long-Distance Dispersal (LDD) of spores and other propagules from lower latitudes and even the Northern Hemisphere to Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic regions. However, few studies have attempted to document the transfer mechanisms by which potential newcomers may arrive in Antarctica. Commonly suggested or assumed mechanisms include transport in air currents, adventitious transfer with migrating or vagrant birds, and with human assistance. In this study, we investigated the biodiversity present in the air along a 40° latitudinal transect, from the port city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (ca. 22°S) to Comandante Ferraz Station on King George Island (South Shetland Islands, ca. 62°S), maritime Antarctica, to shed light on the potential role of LDD in species distribution. Air samples were collected in October 2021 on the Brazilian polar support vessel Ary Rongel using air filters with membranes of 0.22 μm. Total DNA was extracted from the filters and the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS2) DNA sequence was used for metabarcoding. A total of 53 non-fungal taxa representing three kingdoms (most abundantly Viridiplantae) and six phyla (most abundantly Bryophyta and Magnoliophyta) were assigned from the sequences found. Aerial biodiversity was greater closer to the coast and generally decreased with increasing latitude, although a small increase was apparent in the South Shetland Islands. The taxa assigned are generally present in coastal biomes, although a small proportion of the assignments represented taxa of more distant origin, supporting the occurrence of LDD in the air column.  相似文献

The diversity of ericoid mycorrhizal fungi isolated from Rhododendron decorum Franch. in Yunnan, southwestern China, was examined for the first time. In total 300 hair-root samples were collected from 13 R. decorum individuals in two adjacent wild population sites and one cultivated population site. Two hundred eighteen slow-growing isolates were obtained; the ability of some to form ericoid mycorrhiza was tested in vitro. One hundred twenty-five isolates formed hyphal structures morphologically corresponding to ericoid mycorrhiza, and these were determined by morphological and molecular means to belong to 12 fungal species. There were hardly any differences in species among the three sampled populations. The sequences of several isolates were similar to those of Oidiodendron maius and ericoid mycorrhizal fungi from Helotiales, accounting respectively for 18.4% and 24.8% of the total culturable ericoid mycorrhizal fungi assemblage. Dark septate endophytes were detected in the sampled hair roots by microscopy.  相似文献

Two populations of the world's most southerly diving beetle (Lancetes angusticollis) were studied on sub-Antarctic South Georgia between November 1995 and April 1996. Parallel observations were made on laboratory cultures of each life stage. All juvenile stages of L. angusticollis are voracious predators, preying mainly on the herbivorous copepod Boeckella poppei. Adult beetles additionally predate benthic ostracods. Laboratory predation rates and field population densities found in this study suggest that L. angusticollis has a more significant impact on its prey than recognised in recent studies of South Georgian lakes. Spring field samples contained only a few individuals of larval instar IV and adults. Young larvae were present from December onwards, with a rapid progression through juvenile instars during the summer months. Fourth instar larvae left the water for pupation between mid-December and at least mid-February. Combining these observations with known developmental threshold temperatures for each life stage implies that L. angusticollis has a complex biennial (minimum) life-cycle, with overwintering possible in three life stages [aquatic larvae, terrestrial pupae (not proven) and aquatic adults]. L. angusticollis may be a suitable indicator species in the context of climate warming studies: a small (1°C) rise in mean environmental temperatures, comparable to that already observed at several sub-Antarctic and maritime Antarctic localities, would allow completion of an annual (univoltine) life-cycle, with concomitant rapid population increase, and serious implications for trophic interactions in these simple lake ecosystems.
