The paper focuses on conservation agriculture (CA), defined as minimal soil disturbance (no-till, NT) and permanent soil cover (mulch) combined with rotations, as a more sustainable cultivation system for the future. Cultivation and tillage play an important role in agriculture. The benefits of tillage in agriculture are explored before introducing conservation tillage (CT), a practice that was borne out of the American dust bowl of the 1930s. The paper then describes the benefits of CA, a suggested improvement on CT, where NT, mulch and rotations significantly improve soil properties and other biotic factors. The paper concludes that CA is a more sustainable and environmentally friendly management system for cultivating crops. Case studies from the rice-wheat areas of the Indo-Gangetic Plains of South Asia and the irrigated maize-wheat systems of Northwest Mexico are used to describe how CA practices have been used in these two environments to raise production sustainably and profitably. Benefits in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and their effect on global warming are also discussed. The paper concludes that agriculture in the next decade will have to sustainably produce more food from less land through more efficient use of natural resources and with minimal impact on the environment in order to meet growing population demands. Promoting and adopting CA management systems can help meet this goal.  相似文献

The three monotheistic cultures have many common institutions and some of them germinated in pre-monarchic Israel. Reasonably, the essential institutions were in place at that starting point; this work explores the possibility that the Sabbath is one of these institutions. Our mathematical examination points to the potential cultural, civic, and social role of the weekly Sabbath, that is, the Sabbath institution, in controlling deviation from social norms. It begins with an analogy between spread of transgression (defined as lack of conformity with social norms) and of biological infection. Borrowing well-known mathematical methods, we derive solution sets of social equilibrium and study their social stability. The work shows how a weekly Sabbath could in theory enhance social resilience in comparison with a similar assembly with a more natural and longer period, say between New Moon and Full Moon. The examination reveals that an efficient Sabbath institution has the potential to ensure a stable organization and suppress occasional appearances of transgression from cultural norms and boundaries. The work suggests the existence of a sharp threshold governed by the “Basic Sabbath Number ש0”—a critical observance of the Sabbath, or large enough ש0, is required to ensure suppression of transgression. Subsequently, the model is used to explore an interesting question: how old is the Sabbath? The work is interdisciplinary, combining anthropological concepts with mathematical analysis and with archaeological parallels in regards to the findings.

The role of nitrogen-efficient cultivars in sustainable agriculture   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
To improve nitrogen (N) efficiency in agriculture, integrated N management strategies that take into consideration improved fertilizer, soil, and crop management practices are necessary. This paper reports results of field experiments in which maize (Zea mays L.) and oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) cultivars were compared with respect to their agronomic N efficiency (yield at a given N supply), N uptake efficiency (N accumulation at a given N supply), and N utilization efficiency (dry matter yield per unit N taken up by the plant). Under conditions of high N supply, significant differences among maize cultivars were found in shoot N uptake, soil nitrate depletion during the growing season, and the related losses of nitrate through leaching after the growing season. Experiments under conditions of reduced N supply indicated a considerable genotypic variation in reproductive yield formation of both maize and oilseed rape. High agronomic efficiency was achieved by a combination of high uptake and utilization efficiency (maize), or exclusively by high uptake efficiency (rape). N-efficient cultivars of both crops were characterized by maintenance of a relatively high N-uptake activity during the reproductive growth phase. In rape this trait was linked with leaf area and photosynthetic activity of leaves. We conclude that growing of N-efficient cultivars may serve as an important element of integrated nutrient management strategies in both low- and high-input agriculture.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a deterministic non-linear mathematical model for the transmission dynamics of HIV and TB co-infection and analyze it in the presence of screening and treatment. The equilibria of the model are computed and stability of these equilibria is discussed. The basic reproduction numbers corresponding to both HIV and TB are found and we show that the disease-free equilibrium is stable only when the basic reproduction numbers for both the diseases are less than one. When both the reproduction numbers are greater than one, the co-infection equilibrium point may exist. The co-infection equilibrium is found to be locally stable whenever it exists. The TB-only and HIV-only equilibria are locally asymptotically stable under some restriction on parameters. We present numerical simulation results to support the analytical findings. We observe that screening with proper counseling of HIV infectives results in a significant reduction of the number of individuals progressing to HIV. Additionally, the screening of TB reduces the infection prevalence of TB disease. The results reported in this paper clearly indicate that proper screening and counseling can check the spread of HIV and TB diseases and effective control strategies can be formulated around ‘screening with proper counseling’.  相似文献

Nickel is required for urease synthesis by Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Tetraselmis subcordiformis and for growth on urea by Phaeodactylum. There is no requirement for nickel for urea amidolyase synthesis by Chlorella fusca var. vacuolata. Neither copper nor palladium can substitute for nickel but cobalt partially restored urease activity in Phaeodactylum. The addition of nickel to nickel-deficient cultures of Phaeodactylum or Tetraselmis resulted in a rapid increase of urease activity to 7–30 times the normal level; this increase was not inhibited by cycloheximide. It is concluded that nickel-deficient cells over-produce a non-functional urease protein and that either nickel or the functional urease enzyme participates in the regulation of the production of urease protein.Abbreviation UALase ATP; urea amidolyase  相似文献

The physiological role of pancreatic D cells has been studied by the method of mathematical simulation. D cells were proved to produce a sparing effect both on B and A cells, bringing about a more economical secretory response to these cells. The suppression of insulin secretion by pancreatic somatostatin is substantial at lower glucose concentration and is insignificant at higher glucose concentration. Vice versa, the effect of D cells on glucagon secretion is especially considerable at higher glucose concentration, being slight at lower glucose concentration. The presence of D cells is absolutely necessary for the Langerhans islets to function as an organ regulating the deposition and mobilization of the biological fuel.  相似文献

1984~2000年间,对娘子关泉域的藻类植物进行了15次采集,共采得藻类植物标本200余号。经鉴定,有107种,隶属7门,32科,49属。其中,以绿藻门的种类最多,有13科,19属,45种。其次是裸藻门,有2科,7属,26种。排在最后的是轮藻门,有1科,1属,3种。群落主要包括8类,即刚毛藻-红毛菜群落(Cladophora Bangia community),刚毛藻群落(Cladophora community),拖拉藻-轮藻群落(Chara Thorea community),弯枝藻-拖拉藻群落(Composopogon-Thorea community),水绵-双星藻群落(Spirogyra Zygnema community),无隔藻群落(Vaucheria community),串珠藻群落(Batrachospermum community)和泡状饶氏藻群落(Jaoa community)。其中,有的群落类型已趋于消失或消失,许多种类已成为濒危物种,其原因主要是人为因素造成藻类植物生存环境的改变或破坏。本文也提出了相应的保护对策。  相似文献

This brief review aims to illustrate how theory can aid in our understanding of the factors that determine the regulation and stability of parasite abundance, and influence the impact of control measures. The current generation of models are obviously crude, and ignore much biological detail, but they are often able to capture qualitative trends observed in real communities. As such, their analysis and investigation can provide important conceptional insights or, in some circumstances, they can be of value in a predictive role (e.g. the impact of chemotherapy in human communities).This field of research, however, is still in its infancy and much remains to be done to improve biological realism in model formulation and to extent the methods of analysis and interpretation. In the latter context, for example, the current analytical methods for the study of the dynamical properties of non-linear systems of differential and partial differential equations are inadequate for many areas of biological application. Future advances in applied mathematics will, therefore, be of great importance. As far as biological realism is concerned, three areas require urgent attention. The first concerns the treatment of heterogeneity in worm loads within host communities. The generative factors of parasite aggregation are many and varied and little is understood at present of how these processes influence a parasite's population response to perturbation induced, for example, by control measures. Stochastic models are required to examine this problem but current work in this area is very limited.The second area concerns immunity to parasitic infection. Few models take account of the substantive body of experimental work which attests to the significance of host responses (both specific and non-specific) to parasite invasion as determinants of parasite abundance within both an individual host and in the community at large. A start has been made in the investigation of models which mimic acquired immunity and immunological “memory” but much refinement and elaboration is needed (Anderson &; May, 1985a). In particular, the next generation of models should address the details of antibody-antigen and cell-antigen interactions in individual hosts as well as the broader questions concerning herd immunity. Heterogeneity in immunological responsiveness as a consequence of host nutritional status or genetic background must also be condsidered.The final topic is that of population genetics. Geneticists invariably consider changes in gene frequencies without reference to changes in parasite or host abundance, ecologists and epidemiologists have tended to study changes in abundance without reference to changes in genetic structure while immunologists have focused on the mechanisms of resistance to parasitic infection without reference to population or genetic changes. It is becoming increasingly apparent that host genetic background and genetic heterogeneity within parasite populations (e.g. the malarial parasites of man) are important determinants of observed population events (Medley &; Anderson, 1985). Future research must attempt to meld the areas of genetics, population dynamics and immunology. Such an integration presents a fascinating challenge.  相似文献

The endosymbiotic unit of Paramecium bursaria with Chlorella sp. photoaccumulates in white, blue-green, and red light (<700 nm), whereas alga-free Paramecia never do. The intensity of photoaccumulation depends on both the light fluence rate and the size of the symbiotic algal population. Photoaccumulation can be stopped completely with 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (DCMU), an inhibitor of photosynthetic electron transport. Hence the photosynthetic pigments of the algae act as receptors of the light stimulus for photomovement and a close connection must exist between photosynthesis of the algae and ciliary beating of the Paramecium.  相似文献

Blunt trauma causes short-term compression of some or all parts of the chest, abdomen or pelvis and changes hemodynamics of the blood. Short-term compression caused by trauma also results in a short-term decrease in the diameter of blood vessels. It has been shown that with a sudden change in the diameter of a tube or in the direction of the flow, the slower-moving fluid near the wall stops or reverses direction, which is known as boundary layer separation (BLS). We hypothesized that a sudden change in the diameter of elastic vessel that results from compression may lead not only to BLS but also to other hemodynamic changes that can damage endothelium.  相似文献

Since the beginning of the twentieth century statistics has reshaped the experimental cultures of agricultural research taking part in the subtle dialectic between the epistemic and the material that is proper to experimental systems. This transformation has become especially relevant in field trials and the paper will examine the British agricultural institution, Rothamsted Experimental Station, where statistical methods nowadays popular in the planning and analysis of field experiments were developed in the 1920s. At Rothamsted statistics promoted randomisation over systematic arrangements, factorisation over one-question trials, and emphasised the importance of the experimental error in assessing field trials. These changes in methodology transformed also the material culture of agricultural science, and a new body, the Field Plots Committee, was created to manage the field research of the agricultural institution. Although successful, the vision of field experimentation proposed by the Rothamsted statisticians was not unproblematic. Experimental scientists closely linked to the farming community questioned it in favour of a field research that could be more easily understood by farmers. The clash between the two agendas reveals how the role attributed to statistics in field experimentation defined different pursuits of agricultural research, alternately conceived of as a scientists’ science or as a farmers’ science.

A study of the effect of exogenous sugars (fructose, glucose, arabinose and xylose) on Qo2 inChioreila pyrenoidosa (A 82) and inScenedesmus obliquus (A 125) showed that the effect of sugars on respiration depends on previous cultivation of the alga. In autotrophically cultivated algae all sugars contribute to the increase of Qo2, in those cultivated rnixotrophically (with the addition of glucose or together with yeast extract, and with xylose) this occurs only in Scenedesmus when glucose or xylose are applied. The effect of cultivation was apparent in that mixotrophically cultivated algae had larger endogenous reserves of substrates than the autotrophic ones. The exogenous substrate is not preferentially respired and does not affect respiration solely as its substrate. In Chlorella, the effect of different cultivation conditions is more pronounced, the QO2 being usually higher than inScenedesmes.  相似文献

An experimental investigation was carried out, and a mathematical model of interaction between invertebrates (infusoria Paramecium caudatum and rotifera Brachionus plicatilis) and algae (Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus quadricauda) in the "producer-consumer" aquatic biotic cycle with spatially divided links was constructed. The model describes the dynamics of a mixed culture of infusoria and rotifera in the "consumer" link, when they consume a mixed culture of algae coming from the "producer" link. A negative influence of products of algae Scenedesmus metabolism upon the reproduction of infusoria P. caudatum was revealed. Taking this into account, a qualitative coincidence of the results of mathematical modeling with experimental data was obtained. It was shown that the co-existence of mixed algae culture in the "producer" link with invertebrates in the "consumer" link in the "producer-consumer" aquatic biotic cycle is impossible because of the displacement of infusoria P. caudatum by rotifera Brachionus plicatilis.  相似文献
