The production of the young stages of four species of cyprinid fish in the River Thames was estimated. From the time when underyearling fish became fully vulnerable to the special fine mesh net used, to the end of their first year, production is 39 g/ma/year compared with 83-3 g/m2/year for fish over 1-year old. The contribution of fecundity to population production varied widely, from 6.1 to 0.4 g/m2/year, but was only a small part of total production. The most productive part of the population was that found between spawning and prior to full vulnerability to the net. Production of this part of the population could be estimated only indirectly and was found to be 58-6 g/m2/year. In the four populations studied production during the first year of life was 66 to 73 % of total cohort production in 1967 and only 39 to 64% in 1968. Total fish production in the Thames was estimated at 197 k cal/m2/year; this high result is a consequence of the very high densities found: up to 96-9 fish/m2 were present in August 1967. Ten km of the Thames would contain about 54 000 000 fish in August, falling to around 8 000 000 in winter. The production: biomass ratios for the four species varied from 1–1 to 1'9 in 1967 and from 0–7 to 2-0 in 1968.
Very heavy, possibly density dependent, mortality occurs in the first year of life; the annual instantaneous mortality rates are very high, ranging from 6–4 to 8–7. Mortality is heaviest during the first 2 to 3 months after spawning; the instantaneous mortality rates during this period vary from 4-0 to 7-3.  相似文献

Abstract: The community structure and population dynamics of Heteroptera was studied in an apple orchard in the Czech Republic, between 1992 and 1995. The study investigated the changes which occurred after introduction of integrated pest management (IPM) practices into an intensive apple orchard. The IPM consisted of establishing grass ground cover or planting six selected herb species in two wide belts along the rows of trees. The IPM areas were compared with areas where chemical control was continued. Seventy Heteroptera species were captured (22 predatory and 48 phytophagous). The diversity of heteropteran communities was always higher on IPM plots and six predatory species and 24 phytophagous species were only captured on the IPM plots. Annual variation of abundance of predatory species on IPM plots was smaller than in phytophagous species. Orius spp. were abundant on the chemical control areas due to abundant Tetranychus urticae C.L. Koch populations, which were probably a consequence of the application of pyrethroid insecticides. Other predatory species were more abundant in IPM areas due to higher prey availability. The abundance of phytophagous species was favoured by the herbaceous undergrowth of the IPM plots. The number of predatory Heteroptera species increased after the introduction of IPM practices. Vegetation cover diversity is enhanced due to cultivation of the plots with IPM regime and has not resulted in any additional increase in the abundance of predatory Heteroptera species.  相似文献

Oligo(U) tracts were identified and measured in RNA from sea urchin eggs and embryos using a quantitative assay based on the amount of [3H]poly(A) protected from RNase T2 in duplexes with the oligo(U). The oligo(U) amounted to 0.0035% of egg RNA (0.063 X 10(-12) g/egg) and decreased to 0.0015% (0.027 X 10(-12) g/embryo) by 2 hr after fertilization. The oligo(U) tracts had a maximum size of 15-30 nucleotides and were associated with two size classes of RNA. In eggs about half were in 100 to 200 nucleotide RNA and half in mRNA-sized molecules. After fertilization, the oligo(U) in the population of large-mRNA-sized molecules was greatly reduced.  相似文献

Summary The populations and production of the macroinvertebrates of a Spartina anglica salt-marsh in eastern England were studied over two years. A total of fifteen species were recorded in the sediments, of which twelve species were of regular occurrence, and the total population density recorded ranged from 3,481 m-2 to 11,444m-2 over the twenty-four sampling occasions.The four most abundant species were Nereis diversicolor, Tubifex costatus, Corophium volutator and Hydrobia ulvae. Thirteen further taxa were associated with the canopy of Spartina, with a total population density ranging from 0 to 1,149 m-2. Total monthly standing crop ranged from 1.8 to 8.5 g C m-2 with peaks in July/August in both years. Nereis diversicolor contributed 55% to 86% of total biomass in each month.Production and respiration for each species was determined and annual assimilation calculated. The total annual production was 16 g C m-2 a-1 in both 1979 and 1980, with a corresponding assimilation of 60 g C m-2 a-1 Nereis diversicolar accounted for >80% of production and assimilation in both years, and the species is clearly of considerable potential importance in the dissipation of Spartina material. The canopy dwelling species accounted for about 1% of the total annual production and assimilation.  相似文献

In order to evaluate the impact of the lesser weever on the ecosystem of the southern North Sea, geographical distribution, density, growth, production and food requirements have been estimated. High densities were found on and around the Brown Ridge, an area with high tidal current velocities, medium grain-size of the sediment and a poor benthic fauna. Growth is restricted to the months of June October. During the winter cessation of growth a considerable loss of weight (about 20%) takes place. Mortality has been estimated by using the average size frequency distribution of all catches made from 1972 to 1984. The resulting convex type of survival curve indicates a high survival rate of the II to IV-group fishes. The production (estimated with Allen's graphical method) of a population of 100 individuals including all age groups (0-VI) amounts to 123.7 g AFDW-year'. In areas with highest densities, consequently, production amounts to 0.018–0.078 g AFDW-m2 -year-1. With an assumed transfer efficiency of 10% through the year, food requirements amounts to 0.18–0.78 g AFDW-m 2 -year -1. Since the lesser weever feeds mainly on fish (85.6%), almost exclusively on gobies (Pomatoschistus sp.), and with an assumed transfer efficiency of approximately 10%, the indirect predatory pressure exerted by it may amount to 1.6 6.7g AFDW-m 2.year -1. A possible feeding by gobies on pelagic organisms (calanoids, mysids) is discussed.  相似文献

The biomass production of a cyanobacterium (Nostoc sp.) in a photoreactor with a low illuminated surface area to volume ratio was improved by the reutilization of the culture medium. After six succesive utilizations the growth ofNostoc sp. amounted to 2.15 g/l with an average content in phycobiliproteins of 14.4% on dry weight basis. The procedure reported allowed an 80% increase in biomass. The cellular self-sedimentation proved to be effective for biomass separation between reutilization steps.  相似文献

Root production and turnover were studied using sequential core sampling and observations in permanent minirhizotrons in the field in three dry heathland stands dominated by the evergreen dwarfshrub Calluna vulgaris and the grasses Deschampsia flexuosa and Molinia caerulea, respectively. Root biomass production, estimated by core sampling, amounted to 160 (Calluna), 180 (Deschampsia) and 1380 (Molinia) g m-2 yr-1, respectively. Root biomass turnover rate in Calluna (0.64 yr-1) was lower compared with the grasses (Deschampsia: 0.96 yr-1; Molinia 1.68yr-1)). Root length turnover rate was 0.75–0.77 yr-1 (Deschampsia) and 1.17–1.49 yr-1 (Molinia), respectively. No resorption of N and P from senescing roots was observed in either species. Input of organic N into the soil due to root turnover, estimated using the core sampling data, amounted to 1.8 g N m-2 yr-1(Calluna), 1.7 g N m-2 yr-1 (Deschampsia) and 19.7 g N m-2 yr-1 (Molinia), respectively. The organic P input was 0.05, 0.07 and 0.55 g P M-2 yr-1, respectively. Using the minirhizotron turnover estimates these values were20–22% (Deschampsia) and 11–30% (Molinia) lower.When the biomass turnover data were used, it appeared that in the Molinia stand root turnover contributed 67% to total litter production, 87% to total litter nitrogen loss and 84% to total litter phosphorus loss. For Calluna and Deschampsia these percentages were about three and two times lower, respectively.This study shows that (1) Root turnover is a key factor in ecosystem C, N, and P cycling; and that (2) The relative importance of root turnover differs between species.  相似文献

Population growth rates of the predatory rotifer Asplanchna brightwelli were determined at 25 °C using a large (Brachionus calyciflorus) and a small (Anuraeopsis fissa) rotifer prey species in three concentrations (0.5, 0.1 and 2.0 g dry weight ml-1) and in five combinations. The prey ingestion time by the predator was also measured. For B. calyciflorus the ingestion time (22.97–8.95 s) was more than six times that of A. fissa (3.68 ± 0.93). Regardless of prey type, the population growth of Asplanchna increased with increasing food density. There was a direct correlation between densities of amictic and mictic fernales. The maximum rate of population growth (1.01 ± 0.10 d-1) was higher at high density of A. fissa prey than that at the same density of B. calyciflorus. Progressive increase of A. fissa density in the offered food combination resulted in a corresponding increase of the predator's number. Gut content analysis of A. brightwelli revealed that the number of prey ingested increased with increasing prey densities.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted in earth ponds (242–1260m2) to evaluate the Nile perch (Lates niloticus L.) as a predator for recruitment control and the production of marketable Oreochromis niloticus L. in the Sudan. Supply of the predatory fish was maintained by induced spawning of L. niloticus brooders by raising the water level in a 1–0 ha earth pond. Lates niloticus fingerlings (7–5 cm total length) were then stocked with same size O. niloticus at the ratios 1:5, 1:10 and 1:15, Lates:Oreochromis , respectively. Over a period of 7 months Lates niloticus reduced young 50g) Oreochromis population and enhanced the production of preferred-size ( 200 g) Oreochromis. The ratio 1:5 Lates:Oreochromis was established to be the most desirable for Lates -with a total production of 0.2428 kg/m2 of O. niloticus with 55.7% (by weight) at the target size averaging 287.5g. The ratios 1:10 and 1:15 produced 0.2106 and 0.2153 kg m2 of O. niloticus , with 49.4% and 16.9% averaging 235.0 and 210.0 g, respectively.  相似文献

During 1982, structural and functional aspects of the epiphytic component in a tropical mixed seagrass meadow, have been investigated for each seagrass species separately. This meadow consisted of the seagrasses Thalassia hemprichii (Ehrenb.) Aschers., Cymodocea serrulata (R.Br.) Aschers. et Magnus, C. rotundata Ehrenb. et Hempr. ex Aschers., Halodule uninervis (Forssk.) Aschers. and Syringodium isoetifolium (Aschers.) Dandy.No significant differences were observed in floristic composition, number of algal species, abundance and diversity of the epiphytic component. On an area basis, annual mean above-ground biomass (seagrass leaves and epiphytes), amounted to 82 g ADW, of which 18% could be ascribed to the epiphytic component. The contribution of the epiphytic component to the annual mean above-ground production ranged from 16% on leaves of Thalassia hemprichii to 33% on leaves of Cymodocea serrulata. Total annual mean epiphyte production was 4.6 g ADW m−2 sediment surface day−1 (19%).When including the macroalgal component of this mixed seagrass meadow, total annual mean above-ground plant biomass amounted to 93 g ADW (212 g DW) on an area basis, of which the epiphytes contributed 15.5% (28.5% DW), the macroalgal component 12% (32.5% DW) and the seagrass leaves 72.5% (39.5% DW). Aspects of the epiphytic component (e.g., floristic composition, abundance, biomass and production) in monospecific and mixed seagrass communities are discussed.  相似文献

捕食螨是重要的生物防治因子。早在20世纪70年代就发现了捕食螨的性信息素,许多研究证明植物挥发物在捕食螨向猎物定位过程中发挥着至关重要的作用,影响捕食螨寻找猎物的植物挥发物来源于未受害植物、机械损伤植物、猎物危害植物、非猎物危害植物。人工合成的植物挥发物组分对捕食螨具有引诱作用,但引诱活性低于虫害诱导植物释放的挥发性混合物。捕食螨的饲养条件、饥饿程度、学习与经验行为等会影响捕食螨对植物挥发物的反应。介绍了信息素与植物挥发物对捕食螨的作用,并讨论了目前存在的问题和研究前景。  相似文献

Summary The effect of a predatory leech, Nephelopsis obscura, on survivorship, growth, and production of chronomid larvae was studied by enclosure experiments carried out in a small pond. The prey population was composed almost entirely of the tubiculous, microphagous chironomid larvae, Chironomus riparius and Glyptotendipes paripes. Nephelopsis significantly reduced chironomid survivorship within the enclosures, and accounted for most of the measured mortality of fourth instar larvae. The cropping by Nephelopsis was not significantly biased toward either prey species. In long-term experiments (66 d) chironomid biomass in enclosures without leeches reached much higher levels than in enclosures containing Nephelopsis. This increase in biomass was due to growth of surviving larvae, rather than recruitment, since emergence and oviposition were not going on during the course of the experiments. The enhanced survivorship of larvae within leech-free enclosures was eventually accompanied by reduced growth and specific production (daily production/biomass) for C. riparius, which made up about 90% of the larval population. Growth and specific production of G. paripes (10% of larval population) was not affected. Short-term experiments (25 d) involving manipulation of densities and species ratio (9:1 CR:GP and 1:9 CR:GP) of larvae revealed that growth of the majority species was strongly influenced by larval density, whereas growth of the minority species was not. The same pattern was observed both in the presence and in the absence of Nephelopsis and was a result of differences in resource utilization between the two species. In the shortterm experiments, growth rates estimated for larvae exposed to leeches were significantly less than those for larvae in leech-free enclosures. This could be due either to size-biased consumption of larvae by Nephelopsis, or possibly a disturbance factor leading to reduced larval food intake and/or increased metabolic costs.  相似文献

Production and community composition of selected taxa of Chironomidae were estimated in cross-sections of the lower course of two lowland rivers, the Widawka and the Grabia. At the selected site, the Grabia has not changed its morphometry for many years, whereas the discharge of the Widawka has increased (mainly due to inputs of coal mine water) by 75% in comparison with its hypothetical natural discharge. In the Widawka, the production value, for 76.7% of total Chironomidae abundance, amounted to 12.45 g dry wt m–2 yr–1, while in the Grabia it amounted to 11.91 g dry wt m–2 yr–1 The annual P : B ranged from 14.5 for large-sized species (Chironomus in the Widawka) to 82.0 for small-sized species (Eukiefferiella in the Grabia). The similar production values estimated for both rivers, despite a three times higher density of Chironomidae in the Grabia, is noteworthy.  相似文献

The first part (1969) dealt with the abundance and biomass of the may-flies (Ephemeroptera). On the basis of the measurement of length of all may-flies and of the determination of the respective weight (according to the curve expressing the relation length : weight) the production for each month was calculated. The annual average for Baetis rhodani amounted to 5,317 g/m2, for Rhithrogena semicolorata 12,478 and for the species belonging to the genus Ecdyonurus 8,47 g/m2. The relation between the annual production and average annual biomass was nearly the same in all three species = 1 : 8,37. These three taxa formed 76% of the biomass. After addition of the remaining taxa of mayflies the production of Ephemeroptera in the two brooks under investigation totalled 27,152 g/m2 = 271,52 kg/ha per year.  相似文献

Summary The population densities of snails living in beech litter were studied form March 1968 to April 1969. Litter production over one year was measured and the role of snails in litter disappearance assessed.Snails were extracted from litter using a modified Vágvölgyi (1952) flotation method, extraction efficiencies being 84%. The mean annual population density of the twenty-one species of snail recorded on the main sampling site was estimated at 489/m2. Carychium tridentatum was the most numerous species, with a mean density of 200/m2. Acanthinula aculeata, Punctum pygmaeum and Vitrea contracta also had fairly high mean densities. The mean annual biomass was 699 mg dry wt./m2 or 278 mg ash-free dry wt./m2. Hygromia striolata and Oxychilus cellarius/alliarius were the most important species in terms of biomass on the main site. Within the limits of accuracy imposed by the sampling regime the population densities of four out of five of the species (C. tridentatum, A. aculeata, V. contracta, Retinella pura) studied remained unchanged throughout the year, whereas P. pygmaeum had a significantly higher autumn population. C. tridentatum populations were highly aggregated at all times of the year, most markedly so in June. Other species were aggregated at certain times of the year only. Samples taken from other sites showed total population densities of snails ranging from 185–1082 snails/m2.A total tree litter production of 652 g/m2/annum was recorded of which 584g/m2/annum was of beech material. 72% fell in the October–December period. 58% of the beech litter-fall was leaves, 5.2% bud-scales, 27% fruits and 10% twigs and bark. Summation of appropriate field layer peak standing crops amounted to 23.3 g/m2. This was considered as potential litter and was equivalent to 3.4% of the total litter input. The litter standing on the woodland floor in Septermber 1968 was 2,700 g/m2, hence, assuming a steady state, litter turnover time was estimated as 4.5 years.It was calculated that the total snail population ingested 0.35–0.43% of the annual litter input, of which 49% was assimilated. The role of the individual species is examined in relation to concepts of key species in ecosystem functioning. The possible role of slugs in decomposition processes is also discussed.  相似文献

In a laboratory colony of a wild rodent, the bank vole Myodes (=Clethrionomys) glareolus, a multiway artificial selection experiment was applied to mimic evolution toward high aerobic metabolism achieved during locomotor activity, predatory behavior, and ability to cope with herbivorous diet. Four lines for each of the selection directions and four unselected control lines have been maintained. After three generations of within-family selection, the maximum rate of oxygen consumption achieved during swimming was 15% higher in the selected than in the control lines (least square means, adjusted for body mass: 252.0 vs. 218.6 mL O(2)/h, P = 0.0001). When fed a low-quality diet made of dried grass, voles from the lines selected for ability to cope with herbivorous diet lost about 0.7 g less mass than voles from the control lines (-2.44 vs. -3.16 g/4 d, P = 0.008). In lines selected for predatory behavior toward crickets, proportion of "predatory" individuals was higher than in the control lines (43.6% vs. 24.9%; P = 0.045), but "time to capture" calculated for the successful trials did not differ between the lines. The experiment continues, and the selected lines of voles will provide a unique model for testing hypotheses concerning correlated evolution of complex traits.  相似文献

A laboratory study was carried out to assess the potential prey-mediated effects of Cry3Bb1-expressing Bt maize on the fitness and predatory ability of Atheta coriaria Kraatz (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae), using Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) as prey. The concentration of Cry3Bb1 toxin through the trophic chain significantly decreased from Bt maize (21.7 μg g(-1) FW) to mites (5.6 μg g(-1) FW) and then to A. coriaria adults (1.4 μg g(-1) FW), but not from mites to A. coriaria L1-L3 larvae (4.1-4.6 μg g(-1) FW). Interestingly, the toxin levels detected in A. coriaria larvae represent more than 20% of the concentration found in Bt maize, and the toxin was detected up to 48 h after exposure. To our knowledge, this is the highest level of exposure ever reported in a predatory beetle to the Cry3Bb1 protein. When A. coriaria larvae were reared on Bt-fed mites, Bt-free mites or rearing food, no significant differences among treatments were observed in development, morphological measurements of sclerotized structures and body weight. Moreover, no negative effects on reproductive parameters were reported in adults feeding on Bt-fed prey after 30 days of treatment, and survival was not affected after 60 days of exposure. Similarly, predatory ability and prey consumption of A. coriaria larvae and adults were not affected by exposure to the toxin. All together, these results indicate a lack of adverse effects on A. coriaria, a species commonly used as a biological control agent. The use of A. coriaria as a surrogate species for risk assessment of GM crops that express insecticidal proteins is discussed.  相似文献

Monthly changes in the morphometric features of pond Idumban reveal that total and littoral areas progressively decreased from 62.4 and 15.4 ha in October-November-December to 6.8 and 2.6 ha in September. The dominant macrophytic producers in the littoral area of the pond were Chara fragilis, Hydrilla verticillata and Ceratophyllum demersum, which flourished from October for a period of 8 to 10 months, exhibiting a typical exponential or J-shaped population growth curve. Biomass of Ch. fragilis increased to the maximum of about 420 g dry weight/m2 in April, H. verticillata to 260 g/m2 in June–July and that of Ce. demersum to 140 g/m2 in April–May. In terms of unit weight, H. verticillata proved to be the most efficient, producing 156 mg dry substance/g plant/day; however, the mean values obtained for 1973-74 were 93, 54 and 53 mg/g/day for H. verticillata, Ch. fragilis and Ce. demersum; the corresponding NPP values 50, 29 and 30 mg/g/day. The GPP and NPP values, expressed in g dry weight/m2/day, were 7 and 4 for H. verticillata, 8 and 4 for Ch. fragilis, 3 and 2 for Ce. demersum. These values, expressed in mg C/m2/day, averaged to 8.2 and 4.6 for all the macrophytes and suggest that the macrophytes were photosynthetically faster and more efficient than phytoplankton. Total gross productivity for Idumban pond amounts to 1773 and 1449 ton (dry weight) for 1973 and 74, respectively: the corresponding values for the NPP were 953 and 825 ton. In other words, 44% of the GPP is lost on plant respiration. Plants equivalent to 56 ton (6% of NPP) are exposed to death in the periphery of the littoral area. The population of Pila globosa proved to be the dominant consumer of these macrophytes. Mean predation amounted to 64 ton/annum for Pila and 200 ton/ annum for other consumer animals. Solar energy known to enter the pond is 1,956,000 Kcal/m2/year. Of this, 24,682 Kcal/m2/year was fixed by the macrophytes, i.e. the photosynthetic efficiency is 1.3%. Of the total GPP, NPP amounted to 13,696 Kcal/m2/year; the net primary production efficiency is 56%. Consumption of the macrophytes by Pila population amounted to 2,943 Kcal/m year and the exploitation efficiency is only 21%.  相似文献

Poor startup of biological hydrogen production systems can cause an ineffective hydrogen production rate and poor biomass growth at a high hydraulic retention time (HRT), or cause a prolonged period of acclimation. In this paper a new startup strategy was developed in order to improve the enrichment of the hydrogen‐producing population and the efficiency of hydrogen production. A continuously‐stirred tank reactor (CSTR) and molasses were used to evaluate the hydrogen productivity of the sewage sludge microflora at a temperature of 35 °C. The experimental results indicated that the feed to microorganism ratio (F/M ratio) was a key parameter for the enrichment of hydrogen producing sludge in a continuous‐flow reactor. When the initial biomass was inoculated with 6.24 g of volatile suspended solids (VSS)/L, an HRT of 6 h, an initial organic loading rate (OLR) of 7.0 kg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/(m3 × d) and an feed to microorganism ratio (F/M) ratio of about 2–3 g COD/(g of volatile suspended solids (VSS) per day) were maintained during startup. Under these conditions, a hydrogen producing population at an equilibrium state could be established within 30 days. The main liquid fermentation products were acetate and ethanol. Biogas was composed of H2 and CO2. The hydrogen content in the biogas amounted to 47.5 %. The average hydrogen yield was 2.01 mol/mol hexose consumed. It was also observed that a special hydrogen producing population was formed when this startup strategy was used. It is supposed that the population may have had some special metabolic pathways to produce hydrogen along with ethanol as the main fermentation products.  相似文献
