Blue tangs in Barbados exhibit three distinct social modes: territorial, schooling and wandering. We compared the mobility, foraging, aggression performed and received and the use of cleaning stations of adult blue tangs among modes and among habitats within a single fringing reef in Barbados. Evidence from observed switches during focal observations and multiple observations of tagged individuals indicate that fish are either territorial or non-territorial. Non-territorial fish formed schools and wandered. However, wandering can be used during solitary movements by fish in either type. Fish in the territorial mode, not previously described in adults of this species, restricted activity to a small area overlapping the territories of other tangs. They actively chased conspecifics and were chased mostly by damselfishes. They swam more slowly and fed at higher rates than other modes. Fish in the schooling mode ranged widely in compact, polarized groups of conspecifics, congeners and other species. They were not aggressive and were attacked mostly by damselfishes. They swam rapidly and fed at intermediate rates. Fish in the wanderer mode showed neither aggression nor association with other individuals. They swam rapidly, well above the substrate, fed little, were chased by conspecifics, ocean surgeonfish, A. bahianus, and damselfish and visited cleaning stations more often then other modes. All three modes were observed in all four main zones of the reef, and their behaviour changed quantitatively with habitat type. We suggest that territoriality reduces competition for algal food, schooling allows fish to overcome the food defence by damselfish, tangs and ocean surgeonfish, and wandering permits solitary movement over the reef to cleaning stations, feeding sites and other resources. 相似文献

Phengaris (=Maculinea) arion is an endangered social parasite of Myrmica ants, and for a very long time was considered as specific to Myrmica sabuleti. Previous studies carried out in Poland suggested some discrepancies within this assumption, and therefore a much more intensive
survey was undertaken. The host ant use of P. arion was studied at five sites in different types of biotopes in Poland, i.e. xerothermal grasslands where Thymus pulegioides was used as a larval food plant by the butterfly, and more or less sandy biotopes with Thymus serpyllum. Altogether nine Myrmica species were recorded, and considerable variation in species composition and density of nests was recorded. At four localities
M. sabuleti proved to be the most common ant. A total of 529 Myrmica nests were examined, and only 20 of them contained larvae and pupae of P. arion. Host ants belonged to five different species, i.e. M. sabuleti, Myrmica scabrinodis, Myrmica schencki, Myrmica lobicornis and Myrmica hellenica. Only at one site (NE Poland) was a significant heterogeneity in parasitation rates among Myrmica species detected. M. lobicornis was the most often infested ant there, which may suggest local specialisation of the butterfly. Overall low parasitism rates
may explain the vulnerability of P. arion in Central Europe but further studies are also necessary. 相似文献

The reproductive ecology of the gobiid fish Bathygobius fuscus was studied at Nobeoka, Miyazaki, Japan. Males of this species maintain small rock holes as a nest and females spawn an egg
mass on the wall of the nest. The males employed two forms of mating tactic: nest holding and sneaking. A nest holder stayed
in the nest and waited for a female to visit, whereas a sneaker intruded into a nest while a pair was engaged in reproduction.
Males larger than 55 mm standard length were always nest holders; those of smaller size employed both tactics. As the larger
males excluded the smaller males, the latter did not occupy a nest hole. With a decrease in the number of larger males, smaller
males changed their mating tactic from sneaking to nest holding. The results suggest that male Bathygobius fuscus adopt a conditional strategy whereby they change their tactic depending on their social status.

Weakly electric fish react to resistance and capacitance of objects that locally amplify and distort their self-generated
Electric Organ Discharge (EOD) received by their skin receptors. The successive-layer structure of tissues gives certain biological
materials a kind of electrical anisotropy. A polarized object, for instance, will conduct current differently in one versus
the other direction. This diode-like electric anisotropy should make a significant difference to a Mormyrid who emits a directional,
biphasic EOD and whose receptors are sensitive to EOD amplitude and distortion changes. The ability of Gnathonemus petersii (Mormyridae) to discriminate polarity was investigated on a virtual object by manipulating changes in a circuit comprised
of diodes combined in various ways. The “novelty response,” an increase in the discharge rate in response to perceived changes,
was used to assess the fish’s sensitivity. Indeed, G. petersii detects polarized objects and discriminates between polarity directions. However, the diode-like anisotropy entails a voltage
threshold. Because voltage decreases with distance, and the EOD comprises opposite phases of different amplitudes, the active
spaces of detection and discrimination are different and depend on the object orientation. Electric polarity thus extends
the “palette” of dielectric properties used by this fish to evaluate object quality, direction, and distance. 相似文献

There are three most important bacterial causative agents of serious infections that could be misused for warfare purposes:
Bacillus anthracis (the causative agent of anthrax) is the most frequently mentioned one; however, Fracisella tularensis (causing tularemia) and Yersinia pestis (the causative agent of plague) are further bacterial agents enlisted by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention into the category A of potential biological weapons. This review intends to summarize basic information about these bacterial
agents. Military aspects of their pathogenesis and the detection techniques suitable for field use are discussed. 相似文献

Based on population analysis of the DRB1, DQA1, DQB1 and TNFA allele frequency distribution patterns, regional features of immunogenetic structure of the population of West Siberia were
investigated. Statistically significant linkage disequilibrium within the HLA class II region, as well as between the TNFA and DRB1, DQA1, and DQB1 was demonstrated. Population frequency distribution patterns of two- and multilocus haplotypes were examined. 相似文献

Interaction of Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus 100NCJB with bacteria Campylobacter jejuni (strains 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5) and Helicobacter pylori, strain TX30a, was confirmed. The results indicate that lytic activity of bdellovibrios both in liquid media and cells attached
to a surface was observed. The potential use of the antimicrobial activity of predatory bacteria for environmental bioprotection
and public health is discussed. 相似文献

We present data on the habitat, density, and spatial distribution of Rivulus giarettai, and discuss some biotic and abiotic variables related to its abundance in Free Flowing Waters (FFW) and Dam Reservoirs (DR)
in palm grove (Mauritia flexuosa) marshes (Veredas) in Uberlandia, Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. The mean density (individuals/plot) of R. giarettai was about 13 times higher in FFW than in DR. In FFW, the density of R. giarettai was highest at intermediate amounts of substrate (plant mass) and it was positively rank-correlated with the depth, and the
number of arthropods. Individuals occurred in an aggregated distribution. The aggregated pattern could be related to a concentration
of individuals in microhabitats neither too much exposed nor completely saturated by plants. R. giarettai was relatively abundant and tolerant to slight man-made habitat modifications. Damming appeared to be especially problematic
by negatively affecting its density. 相似文献

To overexpress the chitosanase gene (csn) in F. solani, a vector based on pCAMBIA 1300 was constructed. The csn gene, which is under control of the Aspergillus nidulans
gpdA promoter and A. nidulans trpC terminator, was introduced back into the F. solani genome by Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation, and the herbicide-resistance gene bar from Streptomyces hygroscopicus was used as the selection marker. Transformants which showed a significant increase in chitosanase production (~2.1-fold
than control) were obtained. Southern blot analysis indicated that most transformants had a single-copy T-DNA integration. 相似文献

Boletus kermesinus, a new species of Boletus section Luridi, is fully described and illustrated based on the materials collected in subalpine coniferous forests of central Honshu, Japan.
It has distinctive features of dark-red basidiomata having distinct viscidity in the pileus surface, usually unchanging flesh,
discolorous red pores, and an entirely reticulate stipe becoming coarsely lacerate-rimose with age. 相似文献

The intron sequence of chloroplast rpS16 and the secondary structure of its pre-mRNA were characterized for the first time in 26 Allium sativum accessions of different ecologo-geographical origins and seven related Allium species. The boundaries and main stem-loop consensus sequences were identified for all six domains of the intron. Polymorphism
was estimated for the total intron and its regions. The structural regions of the rpS16 intron proved to be heterogeneous for mutation rate and spectrum. Mutations were most abundant in domains II and IV, and
transition predominated in domains I, III, V, and VI. In addition to structural elements and motifs typical for group IIB
introns, several Allium-specific micro- and macrostructural mutations were revealed. A 290-bp deletion involving domains III and IV and part of domain
V was observed in A. altaicum, A. fistulosum, and A. schoenoprasum. Several indels and nucleotide substitutions were found to cause a deviation of the pre-mRNA secondary structure from the
consensus model of group II introns. 相似文献

Pilobolus crystallinus shows unique photoresponses at various growing stages. cDNAs for putative photoreceptors were cloned from this fungus. Three
genes named pcmada1, pcmada2, and pcmada3 were identified from the PCR fragments, and amplified with degenerated primers for the LOV domain, which is conserved in
many blue-light receptors. Deduced amino acid sequences for PCMADA1, PCMADA2, and PCMADA3 had one light-oxygen-voltage (LOV)-sensing
and two PER-ARNT-SIM (PAS) domains. A zinc finger DNA-binding motif was conserved in the C-terminals of PCMADA1 and PCMADA3.
However, PCMADA2 lacked the zinc finger motif. Expression of pcmada1 was suppressed by blue light whereas that of pcmada3 was promoted by blue-light irradiation. 相似文献

The size and composition of a social group can influence the reproductive success of its members. I examined the hypothesis
that residents actively try to manipulate group size and composition in Verreaux’s sifaka (Propithecus verreauxi verreauxi). I collected behavioral data from 21 individuals in 5 social groups from November 2000 to March 2002 in the Kirindy Forest
(C.F.P.F.) of western Madagascar. I investigated the affiliative and agonistic behaviors of resident males and females toward
other group members to determine whether residents attempt to manipulate the costs and benefits of group membership. I also
examined 3 cases of immigration attempts and 1 case of emigration. As expected, group members facilitated the residency of
subordinate members of the opposite sex. For example, females sought out the subordinate males, responded to their calls,
and even groomed them more. However, intrasexual relationships were also important for establishing or maintaining residency.
The data, in conjunction with the observations of immigration and emigration events, suggest that resident individuals of
both sexes attempt to influence group size and composition. I suggest that single–male groups are not the norm in Propithecus verreauxi verreauxi because females encourage, and males do not discourage, multiple males to reside in the group to increase group stability
and to reduce the risk of infanticide. 相似文献

Quantitative trait loci (QTL) detection was carried out for adventitious rooting and associated propagation traits in a second-generation
outbred Corymbia torelliana × Corymbia citriodora subspecies variegata hybrid family (n = 186). The parental species of this cross are divergent in their capacity to develop roots adventitiously on stem cuttings
and their propensity to form lignotubers. For the ten traits studied, there was one or two QTL detected, with some QTL explaining
large amounts of phenotypic variation (e.g. 66% for one QTL for percentage rooting), suggesting that major effects influence
rooting in this cross. Collocation of QTL for many strongly genetically correlated rooting traits to a single region on linkage
group 12 suggested pleiotropy. A three locus model was most parsimonious for linkage group 12, however, as differences in
QTL position and lower genetic correlations suggested separate loci for each of the traits of shoot production and root initiation.
Species differences were thought to be the major source of phenotypic variation for some rooting rate and root quality traits
because of the major QTL effects and up to 59-fold larger homospecific deviations (attributed to species differences) relative
to heterospecific deviations (attributed to standing variation within species) evident at some QTL for these traits. A large
homospecific/heterospecific ratio at major QTL suggested that the gene action evident in one cross may be indicative of gene
action more broadly in hybrids between these species for some traits. 相似文献

Following a re-examination of the material treated under Barleria brevispina (Fiori) Hedrén in the recent Flora of Somalia account of the Acanthaceae, it is concluded that two distinct species are involved and Barleria compacta Malombe & I. Darbysh. is described here from north-eastern Somalia. Its affinities and conservation status are discussed. 相似文献
