This summer study evaluated the effect of providing additional fans (cooling) in the resting area within a free-stall dairy barn that had fans and sprinklers in the feeding area and paddock availability. Thirty cows were divided into two homogenous groups and kept in two pens: one had the resting area equipped with two fans (FAN) while no fans were added to the other resting area (CON). Microclimatic parameters, rectal temperature (RT), breathing rate (BR), milk yield, and milk pH traits were recorded. Time budgeting and the behaviour of the cows (time spent in the feeding area, standing and lying in other areas) were also recorded using digital video technology. Two slight-to-moderate heat waves were observed. During the hottest period the daily maximum temperature recorded was 33.5 °C and the daily maximum THI was 81.6. During this period, the BR and RT increased only slightly in both groups, with lower BR (n.s.) in FAN compared with CON. Milk yield was better maintained (n.s.) in FAN compared with CON during the hottest period. The FAN cows showed a greater (P?<?0.05) lying time in the free stalls (9.5 and 8.6 h/day in FAN and CON, respectively), whereas CON cows made greater (P?<?0.05) use of the paddock during evening and late evening hours. Consequently, the total daily lying time was 13.5 h/day in both groups. In conclusion, the results suggest that using fans in the resting area improves cow comfort, which increases use of the resting area. The lying time results also suggest that the benefits of providing ventilation in the resting area might be more evident in barns where there is no paddock.  相似文献

Domesticated horses are increasingly kept under semi-natural housing conditions, whereas their adaptation capacity is not fully investigated. In all, 10 Shetland pony mares were held under semi-extensive conditions for 1 year. In winter animals were allocated into two feeding groups (60% and 100% of maintenance energy requirement, respectively). Triiodothyronine, thyroxine, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), total bilirubin, total protein, triglyceride, glucose, insulin and hair length were measured at monthly intervals, whereas BW, body condition score, cresty neck score and resting heart rate were recorded every 2 weeks. From summer to winter all Ponies showed a reduction in resting heart rate (P<0.001) and triiodothyronine (P<0.001) but an increase in NEFA (P<0.001), thyroxine (P<0.001) and triglyceride (P<0.001) concentrations. Feed restriction led to a reduced resting heart rate (P=0.009), increased NEFA (P<0.001) and total bilirubin (P=0.008) concentrations. Thyroid hormones did not differ between feeding groups (P>0.05). Refeeding of restrictively fed ponies resulted in a rapid increase in resting heart rate and BW and a return of blood parameters to reference values. Adequately supplied animals adapted without difficulty to varying environmental conditions, whereas feed restriction in ponies during winter resulted in reduced resting heart rates suggesting a reduced basal metabolic rate. The energy restriction was compensated by mobilizing body fat reserves which led to changes in blood parameters. Refeeding in feed restricted animals revealed a remarkably quick recovery of physiological and blood parameters to reference values. We therefore suggest that year round-outdoor housing can be a suitable housing system for robust horse breeds provided that an adequate food supply is available.  相似文献

The decisions that animals must make to achieve a balance between quantity and quality of resources become more difficult when their habitats are patchy and differ greatly in quality across space and time. Koalas are a prime subject to study this problem because they have a specialised diet of eucalypt leaves and need to balance nutrient and water intake against toxins in the leaves, all of which can change with soil type and climate. Koalas are nocturnal and spend most of the day resting and therefore choose trees for reasons other than feeding, particularly for thermoregulation. We GPS‐tracked 40 koalas over 3 yr to determine their shift in tree selection between day and night, and in relation to daily maximum temperature, in a patchy rural landscape in north‐western NSW, Australia. The species, degree of shelter, diameter, height and elevation of each visited tree were recorded. We used generalised linear mixed effects models to compare tree use between day and night and maximum daily temperature. Koalas used more feed‐trees during the night, and more shelter‐trees during the day. They also selected taller trees with more shelter in the day compared with night. As daytime temperatures rose, koalas increasingly selected taller trees at lower elevations. Our results demonstrate that koalas need taller trees, and non‐feed species with shadier/denser foliage, to provide shelter from heat. This highlights the need both for the retention of taller, mature trees, such as remnant paddock trees, and the planting of both food and shelter trees to increase habitat area and connectivity across the landscape for arboreal species. Retaining and planting trees that provide optimum habitat will help arboreal folivores cope with the more frequent droughts and heatwaves expected with climate change.  相似文献

Heart and scaphognathite beating activities of Crangon crangon (L.) have been monitored for several days under a fixed photoperiod regime. Freshly-captured animals, in particular, spend much of the light period buried in the substratum, and these periods are characterized by low heart rates and high scaphognathite beating rates. During the dark period, animals emerge from the sand. Swimming and walking excursions are most common during the first hours of the dark period, and such times are characterized by high heart rates and higher scaphognathite rates (both compared with daytime, buried rates). Periods of low activity, with the animals resting on the surface of the sand, extend over much of the remainder of the dark period, and at these times the animals had high heart rates but scaphognathite rates lower than those of buried animals. The increase in scaphognathite rates associated with the buried condition may be shown to be due to the gill ventilation system adopted by buried animals.  相似文献

Diseases associated with Chlamydia pecorum infection are a major cause of decline in koala populations in Australia. While koalas in care can generally be treated, a vaccine is considered the only option to effectively reduce the threat of infection and disease at the population level. In the current study, we vaccinated 30 free-ranging koalas with a prototype Chlamydia pecorum vaccine consisting of a recombinant chlamydial MOMP adjuvanted with an immune stimulating complex. An additional cohort of 30 animals did not receive any vaccine and acted as comparison controls. Animals accepted into this study were either uninfected (Chlamydia PCR negative) at time of initial vaccination, or infected (C. pecorum positive) at either urogenital (UGT) and/or ocular sites (Oc), but with no clinical signs of chlamydial disease. All koalas were vaccinated / sampled and then re-released into their natural habitat before re-capturing and re-sampling at 6 and 12 months. All vaccinated koalas produced a strong immune response to the vaccine, as indicated by high titres of specific plasma antibodies. The incidence of new infections in vaccinated koalas over the 12-month period post-vaccination was slightly less than koalas in the control group, however, this was not statistically significant. Importantly though, the vaccine was able to significantly reduce the infectious load in animals that were Chlamydia positive at the time of vaccination. This effect was evident at both the Oc and UGT sites and was stronger at 6 months than at 12 months post-vaccination. Finally, the vaccine was also able to reduce the number of animals that progressed to disease during the 12-month period. While the sample sizes were small (statistically speaking), results were nonetheless striking. This study highlights the potential for successful development of a Chlamydia vaccine for koalas in a wild setting.  相似文献

Laboratory studies and a single field study have shown that heart rate in some reptiles is faster during heating than during cooling at any given body temperature. This phenomenon, which has been shown to reflect changes in peripheral blood flow, is shown here to occur in the lizard Varanus varius (lace monitor) in the wild. On a typical clear day, lizards emerged from their shelters in the morning to warm in the sun. Following this, animals were active, moving until they again entered a shelter in the evening. During their period of activity, body temperature was 34-36 degrees C in all six study animals (4.0-5.6 kg), but the animals rarely shuttled between sun and shade exposure. Heart rate during the morning heating period was significantly faster than during the evening cooling period. However, the ratio of heating to cooling heart rate decreased with increasing body temperature, being close to 2 at body temperatures of 22-24 degrees C and decreasing to 1.2-1.3 at body temperatures of 34-36 degrees C. There was a significant decrease in thermal time constants with increasing heart rate during heating and cooling confirming that changes in heart rate are linked to rates of heat exchange.  相似文献

Because fasting king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) need to conserve energy, it is possible that they exhibit particularly low metabolic rates during periods of rest. We investigated the behavioral and physiological aspects of periods of minimum metabolic rate in king penguins under different circumstances. Heart rate (f(H)) measurements were recorded to estimate rate of oxygen consumption during periods of rest. Furthermore, apparent respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) was calculated from the f(H) data to determine probable breathing frequency in resting penguins. The most pertinent results were that minimum f(H) achieved (over 5 min) was higher during respirometry experiments in air than during periods ashore in the field; that minimum f(H) during respirometry experiments on water was similar to that while at sea; and that RSA was apparent in many of the f(H) traces during periods of minimum f(H) and provides accurate estimates of breathing rates of king penguins resting in specific situations in the field. Inferences made from the results include that king penguins do not have the capacity to reduce their metabolism to a particularly low level on land; that they can, however, achieve surprisingly low metabolic rates at sea while resting in cold water; and that during respirometry experiments king penguins are stressed to some degree, exhibiting an elevated metabolism even when resting.  相似文献

Preferential temperature as a physiological feature is crucial for spiders, since it determines the selection of key habitats for their survival and reproduction. In this work, we study the daily and geographical variation of the preferential temperature of the spider Sicarius thomisoides subjected to different degrees of daily thermal oscillation in their habitats. Preferred temperatures differ between coastal and inland populations, but in both cases, there is a marked bimodality in the daily pattern of temperature preference, with two peaks per day that would be given by the changes in the hours of activity. These nocturnal spiders select higher temperatures in the evening (active period) and select lower temperatures during late morning (resting period). In laboratory, spiders have preferred temperatures that differ from those found in their habitats, so they must tolerate or compensate non-preferred temperatures by active thermoregulation in natural conditions.  相似文献

Although non‐linear phenomena are common in human and non‐human animal vocalisations, their functional relevance remains poorly understood. One theory posits that non‐linear phenomena generate unpredictability in vocalisations, which increases the auditory impact of vocal signals, and makes animals less likely to habituate to call repetition. Female koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) produce vocal signals when they reject male copulation attempts that contain relatively high levels of non‐linear phenomena, and thus may function as attention grabbing vocal signals during the breeding season. To test this hypothesis, we used playback experiments: firstly, to determine whether female rejection calls induce heightened behavioural responses in free‐ranging male koalas during the breeding season, and secondly, to examine how the relative amount of non‐linear phenomena in rejection calls influences male behavioural response. The results show that male koalas look for longer towards speakers broadcasting playback sequences of male bellows followed by a series of female rejection calls than those broadcasting only male bellows. In addition, female rejection call sequences with more subharmonics, higher harmonics‐to‐noise ratios, and less biphonation produced the greatest male looking responses. Our findings support the hypothesis that female koala rejection calls function to grab male attention during the breeding season, and indicate that subharmonics are the main acoustic feature that increases the auditory impact of these vocal signals.  相似文献

Thermally-induced changes in heart rate and blood flow in reptiles are believed to be of selective advantage by allowing animal to exert some control over rates of heating and cooling. This notion has become one of the principal paradigms in reptilian thermal physiology. However, the functional significance of changes in heart rate is unclear, because the effect of heart rate and blood flow on total animal heat transfer is not known. I used heat transfer theory to determine the importance of heat transfer by blood flow relative to conduction. I validated theoretical predictions by comparing them with field data from two species of lizard, bearded dragons (Pogona barbata) and lace monitors (Varanus varius). Heart rates measured in free-ranging lizards in the field were significantly higher during heating than during cooling, and heart rates decreased with body mass. Convective heat transfer by blood flow increased with heart rate. Rates of heat transfer by both blood flow and conduction decreased with mass, but the mass scaling exponents were different. Hence, rate of conductive heat transfer decreased more rapidly with increasing mass than did heat transfer by blood flow, so that the relative importance of blood flow in total animal heat transfer increased with mass. The functional significance of changes in heart rate and, hence, rates of heat transfer, in response to heating and cooling in lizards was quantified. For example, by increasing heart rate when entering a heating environment in the morning, and decreasing heart rate when the environment cools in the evening a Pogona can spend up to 44 min longer per day with body temperature within its preferred range. It was concluded that changes in heart rate in response to heating and cooling confer a selective advantage at least on reptiles of mass similar to that of the study animals (0. 21-5.6 kg).  相似文献

Miniature collar-type transmitters originally designed by W.W. Cochran, Illinois, were adapted for use on timber wolves(Canis lupus sp.) in east-central Ontario. Wild timber wolveswere captured in steel traps, restrained with a forked stick,fitted with radio-collars and released at point of capture.Receivers were adapted for use in trucks, airplanes, and forwalking in rough bush country. Maximum ranges were 3.2 km withground and 9.6 km with aircraft receivers. A preadult femaletagged in July, 1964, and a lactating adult female tagged inJune, 1965, were tracked intermittently for 5.5 and 2.5 months,respectively. Tracking periods for six other animals of bothsexes, ranging in age from pups to adults, varied from 2 daysto 4 months. The lactating female and her associated pack regularlyreturned to three preferred "resting sites" for various periodsduring July and August. Preferred areas were well drained, semi-open,mixed conifer-hardwood stands in close proximity to swamps orbeaver ponds. The preadult female ranged in an area frequentedby a pack, but frequently remained independent of it. A preadultmale, tagged in the same region, wandered over a slightly largerarea than the female. Tagged animals were active throughoutall periods of the day or night. Activity increased slightlyduring the early evening hours. There was a slight correlationbetween weather conditions and patterns of behavior and activity.Apparently, tagged individuals were quickly accepted by othermembers of the pack.  相似文献

Juvenile hormone (JH) is a central hormonal regulator of previtellogenic development in female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. JH levels are low at eclosion and increase during the first day after adult emergence. This initial rise in JH is essential for female reproductive maturation. After previtellogenic maturation is complete, the mosquito enters a ‘state-of-arrest’ during which JH synthesis continues at a slower pace and further ovary development is repressed until a blood meal is taken. By examining the relationships between juvenile hormone, follicular resorption and nutrition in A. aegypti, we were able to define a critical role of JH during the previtellogenic resting stage. The rate of follicular resorption in resting stage mosquitoes is dependent on nutritional quality. Feeding water alone caused the rate of follicular resorption to reach over 20% by day 7 after emergence. Conversely, feeding a 20% sucrose solution caused resorption to remain below 5% during the entire experimental period. Mosquitoes fed 3% sucrose show rates of resorption intermediate between water and 20% sucrose and only reached 10% by day 7 after emergence. Follicular resorption is related to JH levels. Ligated abdomens separated from a source of JH (the corpora allata) showed an increase in resorption comparable to similarly aged starved mosquitoes (16%). Resorption in ligated abdomens was reduced to 6% by application of methoprene. The application of methoprene was also sufficient to prevent resorption in intact mosquitoes starved for 48 h (14% starved vs. 4% starved with methoprene). Additionally, active caspases were localized to resorbing follicles indicating that an apoptotic cell-death mechanism is responsible for follicular resorption during the previtellogenic resting stage. Taken together, these results indicate that JH mediates reproductive trade-offs in resting stage mosquitoes in response to nutrition.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on short-term leaf extension rates was studied for two cool-season tussok grasses, Agropyron desertorum and Pseudoroegneria spicata, growing in the field under a variety of water stress and defoliation conditions. Leaf extension rates and air temperatures were monitored every half hour during numerous 12- to 65-h periods in three growing seasons using auxanometers constructed of precision resistors. For both species, a three-phase relationship between leaf extension rate and temperature was observed during diurnal cycles. Leaf extension rate increased linearly with temperature from dawn until midday (phase 1). Leaf extension then increased rapidly, reaching maximum rates in the early evening (approximately 1900h), despite decreasing temperatures during this period (phase 2). Finally, leaf extension rate declined with temperature from evening until dawn (phase 3). This diurnal cycle was described by linear (phase 1) and quadratic (phases 2 and 3 combined) regression models. Although the rate of leaf extension and daily integrals were affected by the water stress and defoliation treatments, the diurnal pattern was consistently observed. Temperature was probably a major factor governing leaf extension rates at night (phase 3), but it appeared unimportant in controlling leaf extension between dawn and midday. The relative importance of physiological and environmental factors controlling leaf extension rate appears to shift during the day in these species under field conditions.  相似文献

An understanding of koala activity patterns is important for measuring the behavioral response of this species to environmental change, but to date has been limited by the logistical challenges of traditional field methodologies. We addressed this knowledge gap by using tri-axial accelerometer data loggers attached to VHF radio collars to examine activity patterns of adult male and female koalas in a high-density population at Cape Otway, Victoria, Australia. Data were obtained from 27 adult koalas over two 7-d periods during the breeding season: 12 in the early-breeding season in November 2010, and 15 in the late-breeding season in January 2011. Multiple 15 minute observation blocks on each animal were used for validation of activity patterns determined from the accelerometer data loggers. Accelerometry was effective in distinguishing between inactive (sleeping, resting) and active (grooming, feeding and moving) behaviors. Koalas were more active during the early-breeding season with a higher index of movement (overall dynamic body acceleration [ODBA]) for both males and females. Koalas showed a distinct temporal pattern of behavior, with most activity occurring from mid-afternoon to early morning. Accelerometry has potential for examining fine-scale behavior of a wide range of arboreal and terrestrial species.  相似文献

Summary In the tarantulaEurypelma californicum, the relationships between heart activity, circulation and the generation of hydraulic pressure for locomotion were studied. Several new techniques were employed.Mean resting heart rate was 21 beats min–1 rising to 90 beats min–1 after burst activity. Decay time to resting rates was related to the increase of heart rate. Post-recovery resting rates were usually elevated in comparison with rates after very long resting periods.A relative measure of heart amplitude was obtained. Four distinct patterns could be distinguished: (i) regular beats; (ii) short-term fluctuations of amplitude within a few heart beats; (iii) a slow rhythmic change of heart/pericardium filling, and (iv) non-periodic, stronger amplitude changes during periods of activity.During locomotion, heart rate rises with maximum rates often reached only minutes after the onset of activity. The rising phase is often characterized by irregularities and a reduction of heart amplitude.Prosomal hemolymph pressure in resting, restrained animals was 41±19 Torr, rising to ca. 90, and 217±48 Torr during walking and fast sprints, respectively. Values in unrestrained spiders were similar. Opisthosomal hemolymph pressures were ca. 20 Torr in resting animals, rising to 40–60 Torr during locomotion.Opisthosomal volume changes were measured. A small volume of hemolymph moved from the prosoma to the opisthosoma at the onset of locomotion, but following activity this volume quickly returned to the prosoma.The simultaneous measurement of carapace depression, opisthosomal volume changes and hemolymph pressures, and heart activity revealed the relationship between circulation and hydraulic force generation. The direction of hemolymph flow was also studied. In non-active animals, the heart occasionally changes its main pumping direction. During locomotion, hemolymph flow from the heart to the prosoma is often reduced or stopped. With a slight delay, hemolymph flow to the opisthosoma is increased. In mammals, diaphragmatic contractions control inhalation while contraction of some thoracic hypaxial muscles and the transversus abdominis muscle contribute to exhalation. Additional thoracic hypaxial muscles are recruited as accessory ventilatory muscles to improve inhalation and exhalation during locomotion. However, the contribution of abdominal hypaxial muscles to resting and locomotor ventilation is little understood in mammals and loco-ventilatory integration has not been studied in small basal mammals. We show for the first time that all of the abdominal hypaxial muscles actively contribute to both resting and locomotory ventilation in mammals but in a size-dependent manner. In large opossums (Didelphis), hypaxial muscles exhibit uniform mild tonus during resting ventilation (pressurizing the gut to aid in exhalation) and shift to phasic bursts of activity during each exhalation during locomotion. Smaller opossums (Monodelphis) actively exhale by firing the abdominal hypaxial muscles at ~10 Hz at both rest and at preferred locomotor speeds. Furthermore, the large opossums entrained ventilation to limb cycling as speed increased while the small opossums entrained limb cycling to the resting ventilation rate during locomotion. Differences in these species are related to size effects on the natural frequency of the ventilatory system and increasing resting ventilation rates at small size. Large mammals, with lower resting ventilation rates, can increase ventilatory rates during locomotion, while the high resting ventilation rates of small mammals limits their ability to increase ventilation rates during locomotion. We propose that increase in mammalian body size during the Cenozoic may have been an adaptation or exaptation to overcome size effects on ventilation frequency.  相似文献

An area of research that has recently gained more attention is to understand how species respond to environmental change such as the landscape structure and fragmentation. Movement is crucial to select habitats but the landscape structure influences the movement patterns of animals. Characterising the movement characteristics, utilisation distribution (UD) and habitat selection of a single species in different landscapes can provide important insights into species response to changes in the landscape. We investigate these three fields in female red deer (Cervus elaphus) in southern Sweden, in order to understand how landscape structure influences their movement and feeding patterns. Movements are compared between two regions, one dominated by a fragmented agriculture–forest mosaic and the other by managed homogenous forest. Red deer in the agriculture-dominated landscape had larger UDs compared to those in the forest-dominated area, moved larger distances between feeding and resting and left cover later in the day but used a similar duration for their movements, suggesting faster travelling speeds between resting and feeding locations. The habitat selection patterns of red deer indicate a trade-off between forage and cover, selecting for habitats that provide shelter during the day and forage by night. However, the level of trade-off, mediated through movement and space use patterns, is influenced by the landscape structure. Our approach provides further understanding of the link between individual animal space use and changing landscapes and can be applied to many species able to carry tracking devices.  相似文献

The daily routine of a population of wild Barbary macaques is described. The day journey is mainly on the ground with the animals taking to the trees only for sleeping, resting, avoiding predators and, during some seasons, for feeding. Two methods (based on individual activity records and on social interactions) were used to measure the diurnal distribution of behaviour. In the summer, feeding was bimodally distributed with peaks morning and afternoon. The initiation of social interactions peaked at the same time, owing to the frequent use of agonistic behaviour to maintain individual distance while feeding. The reduction in feeding at midday was accompanied by an increase in allogrooming and resting and in the proportion of animals in the trees. Peaks of friendly approaches and in the initiation of interactions involving unweaned monkeys (excluding play, maternal behaviour and agonistic behaviour) occurred on either side of the midday rest period and in the evening. In the winter, there was no midday rest period; grooming decreased throughout the day while feeding increased. Sexual behaviour was rare during the summer.  相似文献

Two entomopathogenic nematodes,Steirnernema carpocapsae andS. feltiae were evaluated in the laboratory and under field conditions against larvae ofConorhynchus mendicus, a pest of sugar beet in the Gharb area of Morocco. Nematodes were applied in an artificially infested field using a knapsack sprayer either during the day or in the evening after sunset. The number of insect cadavers recovered from both soil and sugar beet plants was greater in the treated plots compared with the untreated ones. The percent reduction in live larvae was significantly greater in theS. carpocapsae treated plots (89.5% and 59.5% for night an day application respectively) compared with those treated withS. feltiae (68.5% and 28% respectively). The efficacy of entomopathogenic nematodes was therefore increased by application at night particularly in the case ofS. carpocapsae where control was maintained for 45 days.  相似文献

Animal daily routines represent a compromise between maximizing foraging success and optimizing physiological performance, while minimizing the risk of predation. For ectothermic predators, ambient temperature may also influence daily routines through its effects on physiological performance. Temperatures can fluctuate significantly over the diel cycle and ectotherms may synchronize behaviour to match thermal regimes in order to optimize fitness. We used bio-logging to quantify activity and body temperature of blacktip reef sharks (Carcharhinus melanopterus) at a tropical atoll. Behavioural observations were used to concurrently measure bite rates in herbivorous reef fishes, as an index of activity for potential diurnal prey. Sharks showed early evening peaks in activity, particularly during ebbing high tides, while body temperatures peaked several hours prior to the period of maximal activity. Herbivores also displayed peaks in activity several hours earlier than the peaks in shark activity. Sharks appeared to be least active while their body temperatures were highest and most active while temperatures were cooling, although we hypothesize that due to thermal inertia they were still warmer than their smaller prey during this period. Sharks may be most active during early evening periods as they have a sensory advantage under low light conditions and/or a thermal advantage over cooler prey. Sharks swam into shallow water during daytime low tide periods potentially to warm up and increase rates of digestion before the nocturnal activity period, which may be a strategy to maximize ingestion rates. “Hunt warm, rest warmer” may help explain the early evening activity seen in other ectothermic predators.  相似文献
