Selection of habitat to avoid predation may affect the diet of young-of-year (YOY) lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush). YOY lake trout may use inshore habitat to avoid predation; this habitat may be sub-optimal for growth. To test this, YOY lake trout were penned in nearshore and offshore pelagic areas of two arctic lakes. Toolik Lake had a lake trout population, the other lake, S6, did not. YOY lake trout in Toolik Lake lost weight, but those offshore lost less weight. The YOY lake trout in Lake S6 gained weight and those offshore gained more weight. The primary diet item of the YOY lake trout in both lakes during this experiment was the zooplankter Diaptomis probilofensis; it was also one of the most abundant species. However, its density inshore in Lake S6 was similar to inshore and offshore densities in Toolik Lake. The increased availability of alternative zooplankton prey in Lake S6 may account for the growth differential of YOY lake trout in Lake S6 relative to Toolik Lake. Bioenergetic modeling of YOY lake trout suggests that growth similar to that in the offshore of Lake S6 would be necessary for successful recruitment. If the reduced zooplankton availability in Toolik Lake leads to the reduced growth of YOY in the inshore and offshore pelagic areas, then these fish will be more susceptable to winter predation/starvation. The relationship between phosphorus concentration and estimated phosphorus load in Lake Dal—a marl lake—is described for the past decade. The concentration of this element in the lake system remained constant during this period although the P load increased by about 40 %. Monitoring trends in a long-lived species such as lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) has it challenges. Targeting the correct life stage to monitor can provide different and contrasting results. Early life stages experience high variable mortality and are often not a good predictor of population trend. Juvenile lake sturgeon (i.e., 5–10 years) experience high survival and could be a good life stage to monitor for assessing population trends. A structured, randomized gillnetting program, Broad-scale Monitoring, which was selective to juvenile lake sturgeon, was conducted over three cycles (i.e., 5 + years apart) in three contiguous Ottawa River reaches supporting lake sturgeon. In this study, we assessed spatiotemporal changes in juvenile lake sturgeon abundance among cycles, among and within the three river reaches. Density rasters based on catch records of lake sturgeon spatially were created using multilevel B-splines. Spatial differences in abundance among cycles was determined by obtaining the difference between the rasters. Three cycles of Broad-scale Monitoring sampled 334 lake sturgeon at a mean CPUE of 0.90 (0.12 SE) sturgeon • gang−1 and a mean total length 673 mm (115 SD) from all three reaches. The relative abundance of juvenile lake sturgeon did not significantly vary among sample cycles, however, CPUE varied within reaches among cycles. There was a spatiotemporal change in density with a decrease in the lowest reach whereas juvenile lake sturgeon density increased the most in the upper reach. The approach used in this study has the potential to monitor spatiotemporal changes in juvenile lake sturgeon abundance populations and may prove effective when assessing rehabilitation or fisheries management efforts.  相似文献

Rainy Lake contains a native population of lake sturgeon Acipenser fulvescens that has been largely unstudied. The aims of this study were to document the population characteristics of lake sturgeon in Rainy Lake and to relate environmental factors to year‐class strength for this population. Gill‐netting efforts throughout the study resulted in the capture of 322 lake sturgeon, including 50 recaptures. Lake sturgeon in Rainy Lake was relatively plump and fast growing compared with a 32‐population summary. Population samples were dominated by lake sturgeon between 110 and 150 cm total length. Age–structure analysis of the samples indicated few younger (<10 years) lake sturgeon, but the smallest gill net mesh size used for sampling was 102 mm (bar measure) and would not retain small sturgeon. Few lake sturgeon older than age 50 years were captured, and maximum age of sampled fish was 59 years. Few correlations existed between lake sturgeon year‐class indices and both annual and monthly climate variables, except that mean June air temperature was positively correlated with year‐class strength. Analysis of Rainy Lake water elevation and resulting lake sturgeon year‐class strength indices across years yielded consistent but weak negative correlations between late April and early June, when spawning of lake sturgeon occurs. The baseline data collected in this study should allow Rainy Lake biologists to establish more specific research questions in the future.  相似文献

Eighty stocked lake trout Salvelinus namaycush (Salmonidae), collected from 2 locations in Lake Huron in May 1995, were examined for parasites. The parasite fauna of this top predator in Lake Huron was characterized by only 6 helminth species. Echinorhynchus salmonis infected all lake trout with a mean intensity of 163.9. The intensity of this acanthocephalan species significantly increased with host length and weight. Eubothrium salvelini infected 78 lake trout with a maximum number of 81 scoleces counted. Diplostomum sp., Cyathocephalus truncatus, Capillaria salvelini, and Neoechinorhynchus sp. infrequently infected lake trout. The low parasite species richness in these lake trout is believed to be due to their large size at stocking and to the loss of historical enzootic host-parasite relationships that followed the absence of this fish species in Lake Huron for 26 yr.  相似文献

Fifty-two drainage lakes, located in south-central Ontario, Canada, were examined to study the association of isolation- and environment-related factors with fish community composition. Eight quantitative measures of lake isolation were examined, each of which incorporated potential ecological "challenges" that a fish encounters when moving between lakes. A Procrustean approach was employed to assess the degree of concordance between fish assemblage structure, measures of lake isolation and environmental conditions (i.e., lake morphology and water chemistry). Our results revealed a high concordance between patterns in fish community composition and lake isolation and lake morphology at the watershed scale, suggesting that insular and habitat-related factors influence the structure of fish communities. At the scale of the individual lake, this relationship varied greatly, ranging from a strong match of community composition with both spatial and abiotic conditions to communities exhibiting weak association with these conditions. Furthermore, we showed that alternative measures of lake isolation provide additional insight into potential factors shaping patterns in fish community composition; information not provided using straight-line distances between lakes. Finally, the statistical methodology outlined in this paper provides a robust technique for assessing both the overall association between multivariate data matrices (i.e., landscape or regional scale), as well as facilitating the examination of smaller-scale relationships of individual observations (i.e., local scale).  相似文献

We analysed mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation of lake sturgeon ( Adpenser fulvescens ) from the Moose River basin. Our objective was to address various proximate and ultimate factors which may influence the distribution of lake sturgeon mtDNA haplotype lineages in this watershed. The lake sturgeon sampled were characterized by only two mtDNA hapiotypes based on a restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis with 40 restriction endonucleases and direct sequencing of 275 nucleotides in the mtDNA control region. We detected no heterogeneity in the mtDNA haplotype frequencies of lake sturgeon captured from different sites within rivers including those separated by major hydroelectric installations. However, lake sturgeon from one tributary had significantly different haplotype frequencies than those from other tributaries suggesting that they composed a discrete genetic stock. These results suggest that gene flow among most sites is significant and is an important factor affecting the distribution of mtDNA variation in this species. The genetic structuring and diversity are discussed in relation to lake sturgeon management and conservation.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that the burbot and lake trout compete with or prey on each other, and that a change in the abundance of lake trout has triggered a response in the burbot population. Burbot growth, length-weight relationship and population size did not change, and it appears that at these population levels, the changes in lake trout abundance had no detectable effect on burbot. It is suggested that the burbot population in Lake Opeongo is limited at the larval stage by competition with, or predation by, a planktivore, the lake herring.  相似文献

Synopsis Plasma calcium and magnesium concentrations in perch,Perca fluviatilis, were monitored in an acid lake, Lake Iso Tenhetty (pH ∼5, Al concentrations 0.3–0.5 mg l-1) compared with a nearby reference lake, Lake P?ij?nne, in Southern Finland. The effect of acid stress could be noticed as 1/3 lower fecundity of perch in the acid lake. Plasma Ca concentrations were temporarily lower in the middle of the winter in the fish of the acid lake, and in April–May samples the situation was opposite. Plasma Mg concentration was also lower in the perch from the acid lake in midwinter months, when compared with the double as high values (∼3 mmol l-1) from the reference lake. Elevated level of plasma Mg have been reported for fish in cold acclimation especially in winter. Thus overwintering may be specially stressing for some specimens in acid waters. Also ova did contain clearly less magnesium in the midwinter sample from the acid lake perch compared with the reference lake sample. This difference, however, was no more to be found later in spring. Mg content in the ova of perch was in both cases high, which may be necessary to the breeding in comparable acid waters. According to the literature fish cannot increase their magnesium content directly from the water. Mortality for the reference lake embryos was lower than those of the acid lake when incubated in the acid lake. No physiological acclimation inside the fish could be demonstrated in this case.  相似文献

青藏高原湖泊群是世界上海拔最高、分布最密的湖群区。藏北地区的纳木错是世界上海拔最高的大湖,同时也是我国仅次于青海湖的第二大咸水湖。在纳木错开展全面的水域生态学研究,对青藏高原湖群区具有重要借鉴和示范意义。论文综述了关于纳木错水域生态系统的已有研究。鉴于纳木错水域生态系统的基本特征尚未得到全面认识的现状,建议纳木错生态研究应集中在生物地球化学循环与食物网营养动力学研究、流域人类活动的生态学效应研究、纳木错生态系统对气候变化的响应、纳木错与藏北湖泊的比较湖沼学研究等几个范畴。  相似文献

【目的】湖泊沉积物中存储着大量独特的微生物,这些微生物在湖泊生态系统生物地球化学循环中扮演着非常重要的角色。然而,很少有研究报道微生物群落在湖泊沉积物中的垂直分布。本文比较研究青藏高原淡水湖普莫雍错和盐水湖阿翁错沉积物在不同深度下细菌的丰度和群落结构。【方法】利用定量PCR(q PCR)和变性梯度凝胶电泳(DGGE)技术分别测定细菌群落的丰度与群落结构。【结果】定量PCR结果显示,湖泊沉积物中细菌丰度均随深度增加而降低,盐水湖阿翁错和淡水湖普莫雍错的细菌丰度分别从1011数量级降到108数量级,从1012数量级降到1010数量级。在相对应的沉积物层,淡水湖沉积物的细菌丰度比盐水湖高1-2个数量级。变性梯度凝胶电泳(DGGE)指纹图谱的分析表明,淡水湖沉积物细菌群落的DGGE条带数(丰富度)显著高于盐水湖(P=0.014);淡水与盐水湖泊沉积物细菌群落结构明显不同,同时在同一湖泊沉积物中上层(0-6 cm)和下层(7-20 cm)细菌群落结构也呈明显分异。系统发育分析表明,盐水湖阿翁错沉积物特有菌门为Gamma-变形菌、拟杆菌门、蓝细菌和栖热菌门,而淡水湖普莫雍错沉积物中特有菌门为Delta-和Beta-变形菌、酸杆菌和绿弯菌门。【结论】青藏高原淡水与盐水湖泊沉积物细菌丰度与群落结构具有明显的差异;同时,细菌群落结构在沉积物的不同深度也表现出差异。这些结果可为进一步阐明青藏高原湖泊生态系统中微生物对气候环境变化的响应提供科学依据。  相似文献

The temporal and spatial distribution of total nitrogen and total phosphate in the sediments of a shallow eutrophic Chinese lake (Lake Chao), and their relationships with the physical and chemical features of sediments, and their effects on the lake water quality and trophic state, are presented in this paper. The following results were obtained: (1) higher concentration of Tot-N and Tot-P in the sediments occurred in the summer and the autumn seasons; (2) higher annual average Tot-N and Tot-P concentrations were observed in the sediments near the various river mouths and in the western part of the lake; (3) Tot-N and Tot-P concentration in the lake sediments generally increased with increase in lake sediment Eh, pH, and Al2O3, and declined with decrease in lake sediment size diameters and SiO2; and, (4) correlations were observed in both the temporal and spatial distributions between the trophic state, Tot-N and Tot-P concentration in the lake water, and the Tot-N and Tot-P concentration found in the lake sediments.  相似文献

Through combined effects of over-exploitation and predation by invasive non-native sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus (Linneaus 1958), the lake trout Salvelinus namaycush (Walbaum 1972) population in Lake Erie collapsed and was considered extirpated by 1950; annual stocking occurred in 1969 to bolster and maintain this population as natural recruitment ceased. While various hatchery strains of lean ecotype lake trout remain the focus of Lake Erie’s stocking, between 2004 and 2011 a humper-like ecotype was stocked to aid re-establishment efforts. We assessed ecotype performance via adult fish collected during the summer-stratified period (2004–2017) and evaluated if life history and ecological characteristics varied between stocked ecotypes. Ecotype-specific differences in survival, length-at-age, accumulation of weight with length, and diet were observed. Lean lake trout grew faster (length-at-age) and matured at larger sizes than the humper ecotype. Humper lake trout exhibited higher sea lamprey wounding and lower survival rates than lean lake trout. Humpers also consumed more benthic prey fish than lean lake trout, suggesting this ecotype may exhibit a more benthic orientation than leans. Our study represents the first evaluation of how a non-lean ecotype lake trout performs outside their native ecosystem and provides fishery managers with valuable information relevant to re-establishing lake trout populations in the Great Lakes.

To what extent are patterns of biological diversification determined by natural selection? We addressed this question by exploring divergence in foraging morphology of threespine stickleback fish inhabiting lake and stream habitats within eight independent watersheds. We found that lake fish generally displayed more developed gill structures and had more streamlined bodies than did stream fish. Diet analysis revealed that these morphological differences were associated with limnetic vs. benthic foraging modes, and that the extent of morphological divergence within watersheds reflected differences in prey resources utilized by lake and stream fish. We also found that patterns of divergence were unrelated to patterns of phenotypic trait (co)variance within populations (i.e. the ‘line of least resistance’). Instead, phenotypic (co)variances were more likely to have been shaped by adaptation to lake vs. stream habitats. Our study thus implicates natural selection as a strong deterministic force driving morphological diversification in lake–stream stickleback. The strength of this inference was obtained by complementing a standard analysis of parallel divergence in means between discrete habitat categories (lake vs. stream) with quantitative estimates of selective forces and information on trait (co)variances.  相似文献

Viral and Bacterioplankton Dynamics in Two Lakes with Different Humic Contents   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
Viral and bacterioplankton dynamics were investigated, together with the temporal variation of phage-infected bacterioplankton in two oligotrophic lakes, one humic and the other clearwater. Bacterial abundance was significantly higher in the humic lake, while the abundance of virus-like particles (VLP) was significantly higher in the clearwater lake. There were no differences in either the frequency of infected bacterial cells (FIC), or in burst size between the lakes. Because of the higher bacterial abundance in the humic lake, a larger number of bacteria were lyzed in this lake. FIC showed large seasonal changes, varying between 9 and 43%, which covers almost the entire range of previously published data from both lacustrine and marine environments. The temporal changes in VLP abundance and FIC were slow in both the humic and clearwater lakes. The burst size was low in both lakes (average value, nine in each case), probably because of the oligotrophic status of the lakes. The chlorophyll a concentrations were higher and positively correlated with VLP numbers in the clearwater lake, indicating that a significant proportion of the viruses in this lake may be phytoplankton viruses.  相似文献

运城盐湖作为一个人类活动深入参与的高盐环境,其中的细菌群落结构及生态多样性既有盐湖环境的共性,又有自身的特殊性。【目的】运城盐湖湖水颜色丰富,蕴含着大量嗜盐及耐盐微生物资源。为了深入探究运城盐湖细菌资源分布规律,对不同水域中细菌多样性和群落结构进行研究,探讨运城盐湖不同水域中细菌群落结构的变化规律。【方法】基于16S rRNA基因的扩增子高通量测序,对运城盐湖不同水域的细菌群落结构进行分析,同时对微生物的潜在代谢功能进行预测。【结果】运城盐湖不同水域中的优势细菌类群有所差异,在盐湖中部,假单胞菌门(Pseudomonadota)、放线菌门(Actinobacteriota)和拟杆菌门(Bacteroidota)是优势类群;而在运城盐湖东部,芽孢杆菌门(Bacillota)则是主要类群;在运城盐湖西部,髌骨菌门(Patescibacteria)类群较为丰富。对运城盐湖不同区域的细菌多样性进行分析,数据显示盐湖中部浅黄色湖水中微生物多样性显著高于盐湖东部和西部区域,但盐湖中部红色湖水区域的微生物多样性较低。另外,在盐湖中部,湖水颜色不同的区域细菌物种分布也具有较大的差异。对运城盐湖细菌代谢功能进行预测分析发现,在盐湖不同区域的微生物参与的代谢通路活性各不相同,表现出较强的区域分布性,盐湖东部和西部的微生物代谢比盐湖中部更具有活性。【结论】运城盐湖微生物多样性丰富,不同水域的细菌多样性具有显著差异,盐湖不同水域的环境对细菌群落结构具有一定影响。本研究为运城盐湖细菌资源多样性的保育及开发利用提供了重要的理论基础。  相似文献

We have studied the diversity of pelagic cyanobacteria in Lake Loosdrecht, The Netherlands, through recovery and analysis of small subunit ribosomal RNA gene sequences from lake samples and cyanobacterial isolates. We used an adapted protocol for specific amplification of cyanobacterial rDNA for denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis. This protocol enabled direct comparison of cyanobacterial community profiles with overall bacterial profiles. The theoretical amplification specificity of the primers was supported by sequence analysis of DNA from excised DGGE bands. Sequences recovered from these bands, in addition to sequences obtained by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and cloning from lake DNA as well as from cyanobacterial isolates from the lake, revealed a diverse consortium of cyanobacteria, among which are representatives of the genera Aphanizomenon, Planktothrix, Microcystis and Synechococcus. One numerically important and persistent cyanobacterium in the lake, Prochlorothrix hollandica, appeared to co-occur with an unknown but related species. However, the lake is dominated by filamentous species that originally have been termed 'Oscillatoria limnetica-like'. We show that this is a group of several related cyanobacteria, co-occurring in the lake, which belong to the Limnothrix/Pseudanabaena group. The available variation among the coexisting strains of this group can explain the persistent dominance of the group under severe viral pressure.  相似文献

The Lake Chany complex, located in southwestern Siberia, consists of large shallow lakes with an average depth of about 2.2m. The area of the lake fluctuates with the water level, which is closely related to the amount of inflow and evaporation, as the lake complex is endorheic. Using National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellite images of the ice-free periods from 1999 to 2004, we evaluated the seasonal changes in the lake area and surrounding vegetation of the Lake Chany complex. The maximum lake area was observed in early May and decreased until late July. The lake area in August was about 60% of the maximum. Subsequently, the area tended to increase until early October. Compared to ground-truth data, the areas undergoing seasonal fluctuations in the NOAA images corresponded to vast stands of vegetation (Phragmites australis) that were several kilometers wide. These areas seem to be influenced by the inflow of snow-melt water and reed growth. Although interannual differences in the seasonal change in lake area were not great for the whole lake complex, the isolated Yudinskii Pool showed large interannual differences during summer and autumn, suggesting that monitoring this area using NOAA images will be useful for estimating the interannual fluctuations in the southwestern Siberian environment.  相似文献

Because of the high spatial heterogeneity of the ecosystem properties of large lakes, the characterisation of lake zones is particularly helpful for designing zone-specific strategies for water management practices. In this study, we developed a lake-zoning framework by investigating the lateral dispersion of inflow pollutants through dye-tracking experiments in a case study of a large shallow lake (Lake Chaohu) in China. A two-dimensional hydrodynamic and mass transport model was used to quantify the impacts of inflow rivers on this lake. Results from 2012 to 2014 showed that the lake zoning results were more stable at the annual scale than at the seasonal scale, implying that the seasonal scale is not suitable for the establishment of lake zones. A driving factor analysis showed that inflow discharge was a more critical factor determining lake zones than wind conditions. In contrast to previous lake zoning methods, the proposed framework implements lake zoning quantitatively through hydrodynamic modelling.  相似文献

Inle Lake is the second largest lake in Myanmar and one of the nine key sites for sightseeing there. An analysis of its water quality has not been published before. The objective of this study is to reveal the current situation and find any major problems with the lake. For this purpose, the natural and cultural environments were examined. Some physical and chemical aspects of the surface water were assayed in situ for 2 days in November 2004. The principal ions were analyzed in our laboratory. The main cation and anion species in the lake surface water are Ca2+ and HCO3 . Its high calcium content can be attributed to the limestone of Shan Plateau around the lake. The alkalinity of the lake water was 3829–4114 acid-neutralizing capacity (ANC) (pH 7.8–8.0); it can be attenuated by Ca2+. The concentrations of PO4-P, NO2-N, and NO3-N were relatively high; these could originate from domestic and agriculture uses. The trophic state is eutropic. The concentrations of coliform bacteria indicated that the lake water was unfit to drink, but some people use it for drinking anyway. The bacteria could enter the lake through the direct latrine system used there. The thermal type of the lake is presumed to be warm polymictic. More extensive studies are needed because the lake is thought to be the most changing site in Myanmar as a result of both the tourism boom and increasing agricultural activity.  相似文献
