Meloid beetles are well characterised by both morphological and biological features. Previous phylogenetic hypotheses based on morphological characters assumed the repeated parallel evolution of complex biological novelties. In this work relationships among several taxa of the four subfamilies and almost all tribes representing meloid diversity are examined by using mitochondrial (16S) and nuclear (ITS2) DNA sequences, in 25 genera (using Anthicidae as outgroup). Secondary structure of 16S and ITS2 rRNAs were modelled. ITS2 structure represents a synapomorphic condition for the family and informative characters at the tribal level. Phylogenetic hypotheses based on separate and combined analysis of the 16S and ITS2 rDNA sequences, and morpho-biological characters were tested, and compared with previous morphological classifications. Molecular dating allowed an outline of the main steps of the evolutionary history of Meloidae, which evolved during Early Cretaceous and then radiated considerably with the adoption of hypermetaboly and parasitic behaviour, and with repeated, parallel evolution of larval phoresy on its hosts.  相似文献

The phenetics of 12 genera of Afrotropical Cryptobiina have been analysed by multivariate statistics. Three analyses (principal component analysis, canonical discriminant analysis and cluster analysis) have been used to determine the relative positions of the taxa in a morphospace. These analyses have allowed us to confirm the generic divisions based on alpha-systematic and phylogenetic grounds. While phenetic systematics and cladistic systematics have often been opposed, this study shows that both approaches are, in the end, complementary. Phenetical analysis allow, in addition to a quantitative definition of the genera, the isolation of ethological or ecological characters, while the cladistic approch gives to them precision and a phylogenetic sense. The three types of analyses point out the importance in Cryptobiina of the size, length of the scapus and width of the neck, all three characters which were also designated as significant characters by the phylogenetic analysis.  相似文献

Abstract. Two peptides were isolated from methanolic extracts of corpora cardiaca of the blister beetle, Decupotoma lunata , by a single-step purification procedure, utilizing C-18 reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) for separation, and the increase of haemolymph lipids in Locusta migratoria for bioassay. The native peptides were analysed by matrix-assisted laser-desorption ionization mass spectrometry revealing main ions at m/z 1180 and 1009 respectively which were attributed to the [M + Na]+ form of the respective peptides. After deblocking of the N-terminal pyroglutamate residue of each peptide, the structures of the deblocked peptides were determined by pulsed-liquid phase sequencing employing Edman chemistry. The sequences of the two peptides, (1) pGlu-Leu-Asn-Phe-Ser-Pro-Am-Trp-Gly-AsnNH2 and (2) pGlu-Leu-Asn-Phe-Ser-Pro-Asn-TrpNH2, characterize them as deca- and octapeptide members of the AKH/RPCH family. Whereas the decapeptide is a novel member of this family and is given the acronym Del-CC ( Decupotoma lunata corpus cardiacum peptide), the octapeptide has previously been found in tenebrionid beetles and has the acronym Tem-HrTH. The corpora cardiaca of two other species of blister beetles ( Cyaneolytta pectoralis and Mylabris coeca ) contain the same two peptides as D. lunata , as judged by RP-HPLC and biological activity. Neither a corpus cardiacum extract of Decupotoma lunata nor the synthetic peptides Del-CC and Tem-HrTH were active in mobilizing carbohydrates or lipids in the blister beetle.  相似文献

This study provides C-value (haploid nuclear DNA content) estimates for 31 species of ladybird beetles (representing 6 subfamilies and 8 tribes), the first such data for the family Coccinellidae. Despite their unparalleled diversity, the Coleoptera have been very poorly studied in terms of genome size variation, such that even this relatively modest sample of species makes the Coccinellidae the third best studied family of beetles, behind the Tenebrionidae and Chrysomelidae. The present study provides a comparison of patterns of genome size variation with these two relatively well-studied families. No correlation was found between genome size and body size in the ladybirds, in contrast to some other invertebrate groups but in keeping with findings for other beetle families. However, there is some indication that developmental time and/or feeding ecology is related to genome size in this group. Some phylogenetic patterns and possible associations with subgenomic features are also discussed.  相似文献

Phenetic and cladistic relationships among tenebrionid beetles (Coleoptera)   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Abstract. The higher classification of Tenebrionidae is analysed using numerical phenetic, numerical cladistic and traditional Hennigian methods. In all, eighty characters are examined for about 335 taxa; definitive analyses are made on combinations of eighteen to seventy characters for thirty-three OTUs. At lower levels of relationship (genera and closely related tribes) phenetic and cladistic classifications are shown to be congruent, but at higher levels (tribes and subfamilies) there is marked discordance with phenetic results being more stable. A consensus classification is more similar to the Hennigian cladogram than is any single computer generated cladogram. Two main tribal groups – the Lagrioid and Tenebrionoid groups – are suggested which differ in defensive glands, female anatomy, wing and mouthpart morphology, larval characters and other features. The Tenebrionoid group consists of three main subdivisions – the tenebrionine, coelometopine and diaperine lineages. Changes in classificatory position are recommended for eighty-seven genera and tribes (listed in Appendix E) and implied for numerous others.  相似文献

Understanding regional variability in species richness is necessary for conservation efforts to succeed in the face of large-scale environmental deterioration. Several analyses of North American vertebrates have shown that climatic energy provides the best explanation of contemporary species richness patterns. The paucity of analyses of insect diversity patterns, however, remains a serious obstacle to a general hypothesis of spatial variation in diversity. We collected species distribution data on a North American beetle genus, Epicauta (Coleoptera: Meloidae) and tested several major diversity hypotheses. These beetles are generally grasshopper egg predators as larvae, and angiosperm herbivores as adults. Epicauta richness is highest in the hot, dry American southwest, and decreases north and east, consistent with the species richness-energy hypothesis. Potential evapotranspiration, which is also the best predictor of richness patterns among North American vertebrates, explains 80.2% of the variability in Epicauta species richness. Net primary productivity and variables measuring climatic heat energy only (such as PET) are not generally comparable, though they are sometimes treated as if they were equivalent. We conclude that the species richness-energy hypothesis currently provides a better overall explanation for Epicauta species richness patterns in North America than other major diversity hypotheses. The observed relationship between climatic energy and regional species richness may provide significant insight into the response of ecological communities to climate change.  相似文献

A headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method was developed to determine a type of terpenoid named as cantharidin in the false blister beetles, family Oedemeridae. The experimental parameters for HS-SPME method were optimized. Six commercial fibers for HS-SPME method development were tested and the divinylbenzene/carboxene/polydimethylsiloxane fiber was selected to provide the best detection of analyzed compound. The calibration curve showed linearity in the range of 0.1-50 μg mL(-1), correlation coefficient (R(2)=0.992), limit of detection (0.01 ng mL(-1)) and quantitation (0.04 ng mL(-1)) were obtained for the proposed method. The relative standard deviations of intra-day and inter-day assays were 7.8 and 3.4%, respectively. The recovery values, obtained after spiking the beetle samples by three concentration levels of standard solution, were higher than 87%. The results indicated the successful application of the proposed method on the analysis of cantharidin from the false blister beetles.  相似文献

Twenty modes of stereotyped righting motions were observed in 116 representative species of coleoptera. Methods included cine and stereocine recording with further frame by frame analysis, stereogrammetry, inverse kinematic reconstruction of joint angles, stroboscopic photography, recording of electromyograms, 3D measurements of the articulations, etc. The basic mode consists of a search phase, ending up with grasping the substrate, and a righting, overturning phase. Leg coordination within the search cycle differs from the walking cycle with respect to phasing of certain muscle groups. Search movements of all legs appear chaotic, but the tendency to move in antiphase is still present in adjacent ipsilateral and contralateral leg pairs. The system of leg coordination might be split: legs of one side might search, while contralateral legs walk, or fore and middle legs walk while hind legs search. Elaborated types of righting include somersaults with the aid of contralateral or diagonal legs, pitch on elytra, jumps with previous energy storage with the aid of unbending between thoracic segments (well-known for Elateridae), or quick folding of elytra (originally described in Histeridae). Righting in beetles is compared with righting modes known in locusts and cockroaches. Search in a righting beetle is directed dorsad, while a walking insect searches for the ground downwards. Main righting modes were schematized for possible application to robotics.  相似文献

Biogeography of the phoracanthine beetles (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Six biogeographic subregions of the phoracanthine beetles are proposed on the basis of 136 valid species in all eleven genera of this Australasian group of insects: the Kosciuskan, Western, Eyrean, Torresian, Timorian and New Guinean. Both phenetic and cladistic approaches are employed in the biogeographic study of these beetles. Phenetically, the Kosciuskan and Torresian fauna are the most similar and the least faunal similarity occurs between the New Guinean subregion and all others. Cladistically, two distinct peripheral faunas are divided: the southern Western+Kosciuskan and the northern New Guinean+Torresian+Timorian. The Eyrean fauna in the central Australian continent is more distantly related to the remainder than the latter are to each other. Biogeographic history of the phoracanthine beetles is discussed extensively.  相似文献

Habitat selection and grouping of beetles (Coleoptera)   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Alan Buse 《Ecography》1988,11(4):241-247
Beetles were collected by pitfall trapping for a two-year period in seven adjacent habitats in an upland site in North Wales. Positive correlations were demonstrated between number of beetle species and number and diversity of plant species. Similar correlations were shown between beetle numbers and plant species. However, only 15% of the beetle species were herbivores requiring host plants. The degree of habitat selection by individual beetle species was demonstrated, ranging from habitat specialist, being found in one habitat, lo habitat generalist, being found in most habitats. Herbivores were significantly more habitat specialist than predators or scavengers. The grouping of beetles, demonstrated by ordination analysis, was similar to, but less precise than, the grouping of plant species. The beetle groups reflect habitat selection preferences by individual species rather than a functional relationship between beetle species. They provide an example of the centrifugal structure of habitat selection theory.  相似文献

Variation of 80 multistate morphological characters and isozymes encoded by 13 loci among 23 vetch species of the type subgenus of the genus Vicia in comparison with V. dumetorum, V. pisiformis and V. sylvatica of the subgenus Cracca is described and analyzed with cladistic parsimony and phenetic neighbour-joining methods by using two different ways of coding. Morphological analyses showed the subgenus Vicia monophyletic and revealed subgroups in a general agreement with traditionally recognized sections, except showing V. faba nested within section Narbonensis and ambiguity in the position of V. lathyroides and V. bithynica. Parsimony analysis of orthozymes as presence/absence characters revealed in the subgenus two basic monophyletic clades: 1) V. faba and three species of the section Peregrinae, V. michauxii, V. aintabensis and V. peregrina, in one subclade linked with species of the Narbonensis and Hyperchusa sections together with V. pisiformis of subgenus Cracca in a second subclade; 2) species belonging to sections Vicia, Sepium, Pseudolathyrus and Lathyroides together with V. sylvatica of the subgenus Cracca. Neighbour-joining analysis of orthozymes revealed the same two basic groups, differing only in the relative position of some species in subclusters. Both isozyme analyses showed paraphyly of the subgenera Vicia and Cracca. Parsimony analysis of orthozymes as character states of isozymes yielded a largely unresolved strict consensus cladogram of 209 most parsimonious trees, and reweighting of characters failed to produce a stable tree. Phylogenetic congruence and discordance among morphological and isozyme analyses, coding ways, homoplasy and weighting of characters are discussed. The study of sexual behavior has been largely utilized in phylogenetic analyses of Meloidae beetles. Sexual behavior of the tribe Cerocomini is almost unknown, even though the genus Cerocoma shows the most striking sexual dimorphism in the family. In this paper, the sexual behavior of five species, C. (Cerocoma) adamovichiana, C. (C.) graeca, C. (C.) schaefferi, C. (Metacerocoma) schreberi, and C. (M.) prevezaensis, is described. The cleaning behavior of this genus, previously unknown, is also discussed. A morphological analysis by scanning electron microscopy of sexually dimorphic anatomical features of antennae, maxillary palpi, and forelegs, involved in cleaning and sexual activities, is carried out.  相似文献

The 128 known native Hawaiian species of the tribe Platynini are analysed cladistically. Cladistic analysis is based on 206 unit-coded morphological characters, and also includes forty-one outgroup taxa from around the Pacific Rim. Strict consensus of the multiple equally parsimonious cladograms supports the monophyly of the entire species swarm. The closest outgroup appears to be the south-east Asian-Pacific genus Lorostema Motschulsky, whose species are distributed from India and Sri Lanka to Tahiti, supporting derivation of the Hawaiian platynines from a source in the western or south-western Pacific. The biogeographic relationships of the Hawaiian taxa are analysed using tree mapping, wherein items of error are minimized. The area cladogram found to be most congruent with the phylogenetic relationships, and most defensible based on underlying character data is {Kauai[Oahu(Hawaii{Lanai[East Maui(West Maui + Molokai)]})]}. This progressive vicariant pattern incorporates progressive colonization from Kauai, and vicariance of the former Maui Nui into the present islands of Molokai, Lanai, West Maui and East Maui. The evolution of flightlessness, tarsal structure, pronotal setation and bursal asymmetry are evaluated in the context of the cladogram. Brachyptery is a derived condition for which reversal is not mandated by the cladogram, although repeated evolution of reduced flight wings is required. Tarsal structure supports Sharp's (1903) recognition of Division 1 as a monophyletic assemblage, but exposes his Division 2 as a paraphyletic group requiring removal of the genus Colpocaccus Sharp. Pronotal setation is exceedingly homoplastic, and is not useful for delimiting natural groups. Left-right asymmetry of the bursa copulatrix reversed twice independently, resulting in mirror-image bursal configurations in B. rupicola and Prodisenochus terebratus of East Maui. The amount of character divergence is greater among species comprising Division 1 than among species of its sister group, the redefined Division 2. Based on superior fit of Division 1 relationships to the general biogeographic pattern, a greater speciation rate coupled with more extensive extinction is rejected as the cause for this greater divergence. Intrinsic differentiation in the processes underlying cuticular evolution appears to be more consistent with the observed biogeographic and morphological patterns.  相似文献

In passalids, metamorphosis takes place inside pupal cells which are built by adults piling detritus on the pupa until it is completely covered by a cell. The results reported in this paper show the significance of an olfactory stimulus in the release of this behavior. Adults do not differentiate conspecific pupae originating from their own or other nests for the construction of pupal cells; however, they do not build these cells for heterospecific pupae. It was not possible to demonstrate significant differences between males and females with regard to the presentation of this behavior, but differences were found between young and mature adults. The former require greater stimulation and are less efficient in the construction of cells than the latter. Nevertheless, all adults, including very young ones, can perform the behavior. It was also found that, under laboratory conditions, metamorphosis is normally developed in the absence of pupal cells. Some hypotheses about the possible function of these cells are discussed.  相似文献
