The spores of Syntrichia ruralis (Hedw.) F. Weber and D. Mohr., S. princeps (De Not.) Mitt., S. subulata (Hedw.) F.Weber and D.Mohr var. subulata, S. subulata (Hedw.) F.Weber and D.Mohr var. angustata (Schimp.) J.J. Amann and S. subulata (Hedw.) F.Weber and D.Mohr var. graeffii Warnst. were studied by light and scanning electron microscopy for the first time. The apertural region consists of a leptoma in all spores. All taxa of the family are uniform in their spore morphology. The spores of the five taxa are of granuloid type. The spore wall of the Pottiaceae family includes sclerine (the distinction between exine and perine may be difficult to define) and intine. The taxonomy of the genus Syntrichia is discussed on the basis of its spore morphology.  相似文献

A striking collection of Syntrichia Brid. with epilose leaves was recently made in the eastern Pyrenees (French department of Pyrénées-Orientales). Examination of relevant type specimens and comparison with other awnless taxa indicated that it should be referred to S. ruralis var. epilosa (Venturi) J.J.Amann, which until now was known only from the type locality in Switzerland. Herein, the known geographical range for this variety is extended to France and Sweden. Diagnostic characters, microphotographs, and a morphological comparison with the closest muticous European taxa are briefly discussed, and a lectotype for Barbula ruralis var. epilosa Venturi is designated. A key is provided for the identification of European species of Syntrichia with muticous leaves.  相似文献

Syntrichia ruralis is a cosmopolitan moss that occupies steep environmental gradients. In arid to semi-arid regions of the world it is a key component of biological soil crusts, which are fundamental to healthy dryland ecosystem processes. As such, S. ruralis has attracted the attention of conservationists seeking to restore degraded biological soil crust communities and their associated vascular flora. Here, we generate genomic data for S. ruralis populations that span climatic gradients across the Colorado Plateau of the southwestern USA to investigate the contributions of neutral and deterministic processes to the partitioning of genomic structure. Although S. ruralis appears to be highly dispersible, geographic proximity significantly predicts genomic similarity. In addition, even when taking into account apparently high migration rates among populations and spatial autocorrelation of allele frequencies, some genomic variation is explained by environmental gradients correlated with elevation and latitude. Consequently, efforts to restore dryland ecosystems by establishing S. ruralis as a foundation should include strategies to ensure that propagule sources of this moss are environmentally stratified and targeted to the current/future climates of restoration sites.  相似文献

The Syntrichia ruralis complex is revised in the Mediterranean region and neighbouring areas. A critical study of six quantitative and eight qualitative gametophytic characters from a total of 232 samples has been carried out. On the basis of this survey five taxa have been recognized. An identification key is provided. S. ruralis var. subpapillosissima is elevated to the rank of species as S. subpapillosissima . A lectotype for S. calcicola is proposed. S. ruralis var. submamillosa and S. ruralis var. glacialis are regarded as synonymous with S. subpapillosissima and S. ruralis , respectively. Also, Tortula densa is included in the variability shown by S. calcicola . Aims

A growing body of research supports the feasibility of biocrust rehabilitation. Identifying populations of key species that are amenable to cultivation and that are resilient in rehabilitation contexts would advance the efficacy of these technologies. Here we investigate the growth and stress response of the cosmopolitan biocrust moss, Syntrichia ruralis.

Methods

We sampled populations of S. ruralis along a precipitation seasonality gradient from the Colorado Plateau ecoregion of the western United States. We cultivated these populations in an experiment manipulating duration of hydration periods on a weekly cycle. We then treated greenhouse grown materials with brief, stressful watering events, measuring how many events they could survive.

Results

All populations grew at an accelerated rate compared to growth in a natural setting, at least doubling biomass in five months. Increasing duration of hydration periods led to more growth in all but one population. Volunteer biocrust algae and cyanobacteria developed during cultivation, and differed among populations. Greenhouse grown mosses differed in their response to stressful watering, with the most susceptible populations dying at half the number events compared to the most tolerant.

Conclusions

These findings argue for informed selection and deployment of Syntrichia ruralis populations for soil rehabilitation.

This study is the first report to suggest a morphological phylogenetic framework for the seven varieties of Ficus deltoidea Jack (Ficus: Moraceae) from the Malay Peninsula of Malaysia. Several molecular-based classifications on the genus Ficus had been proposed, but neither had discussed the relationship between seven varieties of F. deltoidea to its allies nor within the varieties. The relationship between seven varieties of F. deltoidea is still debated due to the extreme morphological variabilities and ambiguous boundaries between taxa. Thus, the correct identification of these varieties is important as several morphological characters are variety-specific. To test the monophyly and further resolved the relationship in F. deltoidea, a morphological phylogenetic analysis was conducted based on herbarium specimens representing the seven varieties of F. deltoidea that were collected from the Malay Peninsula of Malaysia, by using related species of the genus Ficus; F. grossularioides, F. ischnopoda and F. oleifolia as the outgroups. Parsimony and neighbour-joining analyses indicated that F. deltoidea is monophyletic, in that the seven varieties of F. deltoidea nested into two clades; clade subspecies deltoidea (var. deltoidea, var. bilobata, var. angustifolia, var. kunstleri and var. trengganuensis) and clade subspecies motleyana (var. intermedia and var. motleyana).  相似文献

The hypothesis that desiccation-tolerant mosses and lichensmay be more responsive to nutrient inputs accompanying intermittentdesiccation than mesophytic forest species was investigatedemploying species from semi-arid grassland in Hungary. Shootapices of the moss Syntrichia ruralis and marginal lobes ofthe lichen Cladonia convoluta were maintained for 7 weeks undercontrolled conditions. They were cultivated with or withouta weekly application of the major inorganic macronutrients,and either under constant hydration or with one or two 24 hperiods of desiccation each week. Growth of S. ruralis was stimulatedby nutrient additions, but lower weight increments were achievedwith increasing frequency of desiccation. All samples of thelichen showed positive growth, and no significant treatmenteffects were detected. A large net uptake of P occurred in nutrient-treatedmaterial of both species that was unaffected by the impositionof desiccation treatments. A smaller net uptake of K into theintracellular fraction was also observed when nutrients wereapplied, but in the moss this was against a baseline of decreasingK content. In contrast, more of the original K content was retainedin C. convoluta. In neither species was any clear evidence foundfor inhibition of nutrient uptake by the desiccation episodes.It is suggested that the lack of growth response in the lichenarises from an inability to bring together the additional nutrients,presumably mainly absorbed by the mycobiont, with photosynthateproduced by the photobiont. Background

Many species of the genus Prevotella are pathogens that cause oral diseases. Prevotella intermedia is known to cause various oral disorders e.g. periodontal disease, periapical periodontitis and noma as well as colonize in the respiratory tract and be associated with cystic fibrosis and chronic bronchitis. It is of clinical significance to identify the main drive of its various adaptation and pathogenicity. In order to explore the intra-species genetic differences among strains of Prevotella intermedia of different niches, we isolated a strain Prevotella intermedia ZT from the infected root canal of a Chinese patient with periapical periodontitis and gained a draft genome sequence. We annotated the genome and compared it with the genomes of other taxa in the genus Prevotella.

Results

The raw data set, consisting of approximately 65X-coverage reads, was trimmed and assembled into contigs from which 2165 ORFs were predicted. The comparison of the Prevotella intermedia ZT genome sequence with the published genome sequence of Prevotella intermedia 17 and Prevotella intermedia ATCC25611 revealed that ~14% of the genes were strain-specific. The Preveotella intermedia strains share a set of conserved genes contributing to its adaptation and pathogenic and possess strain-specific genes especially those involved in adhesion and secreting bacteriocin. The Prevotella intermedia ZT shares similar gene content with other taxa of genus Prevotella. The genomes of the genus Prevotella is highly dynamic with relative conserved parts: on average, about half of the genes in one Prevotella genome were not included in another genome of the different Prevotella species. The degree of conservation varied with different pathways: the ability of amino acid biosynthesis varied greatly with species but the pathway of cell wall components biosynthesis were nearly constant. Phylogenetic tree shows that the taxa from different niches are scarcely distributed among clades.

Conclusions

Prevotella intermedia ZT belongs to a genus marked with highly dynamic genomes. The specific genes of Prevotella intermedia indicate that adhesion, competing with surrounding microbes and horizontal gene transfer are the main drive of the evolution of Prevotella intermedia.

Seeds of the widespread weed Plantago major were collected from 10 European countries, as well as Trinidad and North America. The seed collections were from populations of two taxa which are ecologically rather than geographically separated and formally recognized as the subspecies Plantago major ssp. major and P.m. ssp. intermedia (also called P.m. ssp. pleiosperma). Eight polymorphic allozyme loci and 73 random-primed DNA fragments were scored, as well as 11 morphological characters. Complete concordance between morphological traits and genetic data provides evidence that these two taxa, although very similar, are distinct species. They are both widespread, they are broadly sympatric and capable of interbreeding. However, slight morphological and ecological differences coincide with genetic clustering of populations from widely separated locations. In addition, P. major and P. intermedia differ in their population structure: P. intermedia has greater genetic diversity among populations and less genetic variance within populations than P. major. We suggest that differences between the two species in their levels of selfing may explain the distinctive genetic structure of each species. We hypothesize a link between selfing rate and lifespan of the two taxa. P. major is characterized by lower genetic variation among populations, a higher rate of outcrossing, longer lifespan and production of fewer seeds per seed capsule. P. intermedia is more highly structured with much differentiation among populations, a higher rate of inbreeding and it often grows as an annual.  相似文献

The taxonomy of theScutellaria pekinensis complex has been ambiguous and problematic, because morphological characters are variable. To elucidate the taxonomic structure of the Korean taxa belonging to the complex, 29 characters were measured from 99 individuals collected from 96 localities and analyzed by factor analysis, cluster analysis, and discriminant analysis. The results supported the recognition of four infraspecific taxa ofS. pekinensis Maxim, in Korea: var.ussuriensis (Regel) Handel-Mazzetti, var.alpina (Nakai) Hara, var.transitra (Makino) Hara, and var.maxima S. Kim et S. Lee. Key characters distinguishing the four varieties were inferred on the basis of multivariante analyses.  相似文献

Occurrence and direction of introgressive hybridization between Plantago major taxa were tested. Plantago major plants were collected from 10 Egyptian locations. Four populations of two European taxa were used for comparison. These are ecologically and geographically separated and were identified as the subspecies Plantago major ssp. major and Plantago major ssp. intermedia. In the Egyptian populations, most individuals fall within the variation range of P. major ssp. intermedia. Only one population, from Burg El-Arab, morphologically resembled clearly P. major ssp. major and showed some ISSR fragments that characterize pure populations of this taxon. All individuals of population 2 (Alexandria) and some individuals of populations 1, 3, 5, 6 and 10 (Alexandria, Aswan) morphologically corresponded to P. major ssp. intermedia. All individuals collected from Egypt had ISSR fragments characterizing both pure P. major ssp. major and pure P. major ssp. intermedia. Most of these individuals had a higher percentage of intermedia-type fragments than major-type fragments, suggesting that P. major ssp. intermedia in Egypt shows some introgression towards P. major ssp. major. The pure populations were distinct from each other, while the Egyptian populations were intermediate according to principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) of ISSR data. In the populations collected from Egypt, major and intermedia cannot be seen as separate species. The study suggests that the dominant taxa introgressed to the minority population(s). Taxon frequency may be a key component in determining the direction of introgression.  相似文献

Essential oils from the leaves of three closely related taxa of Monardella (M. crispa, M. undulata var. undulata, M. undulata var. frutescens) were analysed by GC and GC-MS. All three taxa showed highly similar qualitative chromatographic profiles. Monardella crispa and M. undulata var. frutescens apparently show closer affinities qualitatively to each other than either taxon did to M. undulata var. undulata. The chemical data suggest, however, in addition to morphological and ecogeographical data, that M. undulata var.frutescens may represent a stabilized hybrid derivative between M. crispa and M. undulata var. undulata.  相似文献

The Chilean Puya species (Puyoideae, Bromeliaceae) constitute an early diverging group within the genus and thus are key taxa for the understanding of the early evolution and biogeography of Puya. However, a modern taxonomic treatment including information from molecular phylogenetic studies is still lacking. Here, a taxonomic revision of the Chilean species of Puya is presented based on morphological, molecular, and biogeographic data. A re-evaluation of the widely applied concept of P. berteroniana led us to the conclusion that the type of P. berteroniana is of hybrid origin and is maintained as Puya × berteroniana. Our studies revealed that the name P. berteroniana has been widely misapplied to what in fact is the northern metapopulation of P. alpestris, which is here described as a new subspecies, Puya alpestris subsp. zoellneri, a member of subgenus Puya. A lectotype is designated for Puya copiapina and a neotype for P. chilensis. Altogether, six Puya species, two subspecies, four varieties and one hybrid taxon are recognized for the Chilean flora in this revision: P. alpestris subsp. alpestris and subsp. zoellneri; P. boliviensis; P. chilensis; P. gilmartiniae; P. coerulea var. coerulea, var. intermedia, var. monteroana, and var. violacea; P. venusta; and P. × berteroniana. The morphological differentiation and taxonomic treatment of lowland and high-mountain morphotypes within the Solidago virgaurea group are controversial. To clarify the taxonomic status of these taxa, we conducted a morphometric analysis of 1,746 individuals from 80 localities along an altitudinal gradient from the lowlands of northern Poland to the Carpathians and Sudetes of southern Poland. Multivariate morphometric analyses, cluster analyses and principal component analyses, were used to examine the morphological differentiation within the S. virgaurea group in Poland. Canonical discriminant analysis was applied to determine the morphological characters that best discriminate among the taxa. The stability of the high-mountain Solidago minuta morphotype was tested in an experimental field established in lowland Poland; individuals transplanted from various mountain sites were cultivated at this site, and the morphotypes remained stable in terms of their floral and vegetative characters. Multivariate analyses revealed two morphologically distinct taxa in the S. virgaurea group, which correspond to lowland S. virgaurea s. str. and high-mountain S. minuta as recognised in some European floras. The most important morphological characters for distinguishing the taxa are the number of tubular florets per capitulum, inner involucral bract width and involucre height. Vegetative and inflorescence characters appear to have less taxonomic value because they changed continuously with altitude. A key for identifying S. virgaurea and S. minuta in Poland is presented.  相似文献

Heterosavia (Phyllanthaceae) is segregated from Savia (tribe Bridelieae), recognized at generic rank, and placed in tribe Phyllantheae. Floral, fruit, leaf anatomical, leaf venation, and pollen characters of the neotropical taxa previously united as Savia including Gonatogyne are discussed and illustrated. Keys to the three genera and to the species of Heterosavia are presented. Four species (all new combinations), Heterosavia bahamensis, H. erythroxyloides, H. laurifolia, and H. maculata, are recognized. The new combinations Heterosavia laurifolia var. intermedia and H. maculata var. clementis are proposed. The names Heterosavia, H. erythroxyloides, H. laurifolia, Savia clementis, S. clusiifolia, S. clusiifolia var. fallax, and S. longipes are lectotypified. Distribution maps and conservation assessments (IUCN ratings) of Heterosavia species and varieties are provided.  相似文献
