More white-chinned petrels (Procellaria aequinoctialis) are accidentally killed in fisheries than probably any other seabird in the world, but the population impact of this mortality is poorly understood, partly because there have been no recent estimates of the species’ abundance. The breeding aggregation on the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia is believed to be larger than all others combined. We estimated the size of this population by calculating the area of suitable habitat and the density of occupied burrows within it. Some 670,000 occupied nests were estimated for the island at mid-incubation, representing 0.9 million pairs of breeding-age birds associated with South Georgia in the survey seasons (2005/06 and 06/07). This is 40–45% of the previous estimate, but still represents well over half of the global population. If the population is declining due to fishery bycatch, as is likely, the scale of annual mortality in this population alone is at least in the high tens of thousands, and plausibly hundreds of thousands.  相似文献

Mice living in tussock grass on a remote headland of the South Atlantic island of South Georgia (54°S) where the mean temperature is less than 2°C and the monthly average below 0°C for four months each year have been studied. They are big animals (although not as large as those on some North Atlantic islands) and have much brown fat, showing their response to their cold environment. Only two out of 27 gene loci scored electrophoretically were segregating (3·4% heterozygosity); these ( Es-6, Got-2 ) are four cross-over units apart on chromosome 8, and were in strong linkage disequilibrium. There were marked changes in allele frequencies with age which go in opposite directions in males and females, showing the action of stabilizing selection: Es-6 a increased from 16% in males of less than three months, to 35% in older animals; it declined in females from 36 to 19%.  相似文献

South Georgia has been the southernmost location where populations of invasive house mice Mus musculus are found. The distribution of mice was investigated at Cape Rosa and the Nuñez Peninsula, the two areas of South Georgia where the species is known to occur. Live-trapping and kill-trapping took place during March 2012, at the end of the austral summer, with traps in four grids (3.2–4.0 ha in area) and on 34 trap lines distributed across a range of habitats from the shoreline to 250 m above sea level. Mice were scarce, with just 68 captures in about 1750 trap nights. Mouse densities in tussock habitat were estimated at 2.1–2.8 mice/ha, with higher densities of 5.3–6.4 mice/ha along the coastline. Mice were found in all habitats apart from higher-altitude fellfield, but were relatively less abundant in tussock habitat with large numbers of seals. Mice were breeding at both sites with 58 % of mature females pregnant or lactating. Litter size (7.1 ± 2.3 embryos) and adult body mass (21.4 ± 4.6 g) were typical of most other island mice populations. Population densities of mice on South Georgia are two orders of magnitude lower than mouse densities measured at other sub-Antarctic islands. The very low population density and its restricted distribution, with most captures close to the shore, and the presence of large numbers of burrowing petrels and South Georgia pipits Anthus antarcticus at both sites, suggest that mice have a relatively limited impact on South Georgia’s vertebrate biodiversity.  相似文献

During a survey of microfungi on the subantarctic island of South Georgia, large numbers of phylloplane yeasts were isolated in late spring from leaves of a tussock grass. The dominant yeast was identified asCandida saké, this being the first record for the Antarctic region. Isolates in liquid culture had a temperature optimum for growth of 20–25°C. It was capable of assimilation of a range of simple carbohydrates, similar to those found in leachates from new leaves of the tussock grass. The seasonal decline of yeasts on the phylloplane is discussed in terms of the availability of leachate and the growth of filamentous microfungi on new leaves.  相似文献

At the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia 25 of the 29 breeding species are seabirds. Fifteen of these have recently been studied in some detail. By examining the timing of their breeding seasons and their diet and feeding ecology (especially feeding techniques and potential foraging ranges), the nature of their ecological isolating mechanisms, and in particular the way in which they partition the resources of the marine environment, are reviewed.
Although breeding season adaptations occur (winter breeding in Wandering Albatross and King Penguin; out of phase breeding in two species-pairs of small petrels) these are less important than dillerences in food and feeding ecology. There is a fundamental distinction between the niche of pursuit-diving species (mainly penguins) and the remainder which are basically surface-feeders. The two abundant krill-eating penguins show clear differences in feeding zones. Three albatrosses and a petrel feed mainly on squid and there are differences in both the species and size of the prey of each. The remaining seabirds chiefly take krill (although the giant petrels are extensive scavengers and some smaller petrels specialize on copepods) and utilize different feeding methods and areas to do so.
Various adaptations related to inshore and offshore feeding zones are discussed. Although most species possess a combination of ecological isolating mechanisms additional evidence for the particular importance of dietary differences is presented.  相似文献

Summary Many stormpetrel species breed in habitats where their populations cannot be estimated by direct counts of burrows or birds; mark-recapture experiments have been confounded by the presence of many wandering non-breeders. With a population of Wilson's Stormpetrel Oceanites oceanicus at Bird Island, South Georgia, we tried to estimate the proportion of breeding females in samples obtained during a mark-recapture experiment. These were identified by measurements of the cloaca, which greatly enlarges at egg-laying. A concurrent experiment with individually marked birds determined that breeding females could be discriminated from males and non-breeders for c 30 days after laying. The technique is probably applicable to other petrels, though it will work best with those that lay most synchronously. The overall population estimate was 4841–5515 birds (SE 856–1417); estimates of breeding females gave a population of 2300 paris early in the incubation period and 1400 pairs near hatching.  相似文献

Summary The introduced reindeer of South Georgia have had a serious impact on the vegetation throughout the range of three populations on the island. Exclosure experiments in areas where the reindeer were introduced have resulted in a dramatic change in the composition of the protected vegetation. Poa flabellata (the major winter food) and Acaena magellanica (a major summer food) have recovered to their former status inside the exclosures, while Deschampsia antarctia and the introduced grass Poa annua tolerate grazing and trampling and have spread over the grazed areas. Festuca contracta and Rostkovia magellanica are not eaten by the reindeer. Trampling has resulted in a high proportion of bare soil and peat in sites freely accessible to reindeer. However, the changes in the vegetation have not had such a significant effect on the associated invertebrate fauna. Thus in grazed and protected areas the faunistic composition is qualitatively similar, although there are quantitative differences, and some of the trends can probably be attributed to the presence of the reindeer. Compared with reindeer-free areas, the abundance of the perimylopid beetle Hydromedion sparsutum (a major primary decomposer) is reduced. The frequency of their egg parasite Notomymar aptenosoma (Hymenoptera, Mymaridae) increases. Consequently the ratio of perimylopoids to mymarids found in pitfall traps shifts from 1:0.01 (ungrazed areas) to 1:0.54 (grazed areas). Also the frequency of sciarids was found to be higher in reindeer areas. The larvae of these probably introduced gnats do not play a role in the natural terrestrial ecosystem of South Georgia, but in reindeer areas they appear to establish larger populations because they are able to live deeper in the soil and in hardened substrates. There is also a shift in the ratio between Collembola (major prey) to spiders from 1:1.3 (ungrazed areas) to 1:0.82 (grazed areas), for animals collected in pitfall traps. Many of the smaller burrowing petrels are active at their colonies during the night. How they find their nesting burrows in the open terrain of an oceanic island or in the even more visually-taxing gloom under a forest canopy (Grubb 1974 and references therein) is a feat which has long intrigued naturalists (Lockley 1942). There is experimental evidence that vision is important in burrow location by the Manx Shearwater Puffinus puffinus (Brooke 1978, James 1986), while olfactory homing by Leach's Petrel Oceanodroma leucorhoa has also been suggested by Grubb (1974).
Additionally it seems likely that a number of petrel species catch a significant fraction of their food at night (Imber 1973, Prince & Francis 1984). Many of the squid presumed to be caught then are not bioluminescent (Imber 1973, Clarke et al. 1981), so their detection presumably demands good night vision. In the context of these observations, the dearth of information on the visual abilities of petrels is remarkable.
The present study investigated the absolute visual threshold of the Common Diving Petrel Pelecanoides urinatrix. Probably because the species is small (c. 130 g) and so vulnerable to predators such as Sub-antarctic Skuas Catharacta antarctica , it is strictly nocturnal at breeding colonies (Thoresen 1969, Payne & Prince 1979). It nests in burrows that are often located under tussock grass Poa spp. Whether the birds catch their crustacean prey (Payne & Prince 1979) by day or night is not known.  相似文献

A total of 393 seabirds from nine species killed by longline fishing in South African waters around the Prince Edward Islands during summer 1996–97 were sexed, measured, and their body fat levels and primary moults scored. Males of Whitechinned Petrels Procellaria aequinoctialis and Greyheaded and (Indian Ocean) Yellownosed Mollymawks Thalassarche chrysostoma and T. [chlororhynchosj bassi averaged 1–9% larger than females. Measures of bill depth were the most dimorphic characters in all three species. I recommend that if only a single measure is taken to estimate sex of adults, bill depth at the base be the standard measure for petrels, and bill depth at the nail be the standard measure for mollymawks. Discriminant functions are described for predicting the sex of unknown individuals; the proportion of misclassified birds ranged from 2–10%. With the exception of giant petrels Macronectes spp., only two young birds were actively moulting their primary flight feathers. Analysis of wear patterns among adult Greyheaded Mollymawk primaries conforms with studies of moult in this species at South Georgia. Fat scores did not differ between sexes. They tended to decrease during the breeding season, but trends were masked by great inter-individual variation. There was no significant relationship between fat scores and the presence of ingested plastics. Plastic debris was found in the stomachs of 90 birds from five species. Incidence in Whitechinned Petrel stomachs (37%) was less than that reported from birds collected off South Africa in the early 1980s (57%), but this is probably due to the predominance of breeding adults. The frequency and size of plastic loads decreased through the breeding season, which is consistent with the hypothesis that inter-generational transfer is important in the dynamics of ingested debris.  相似文献

Although there is increasing evidence that climatic variations during the non-breeding season shape population dynamics of seabirds, most aspects of their winter distribution and ecology remain essentially unknown. We used stable isotope signatures in feathers to infer and compare the moulting (wintering) habitat of subantarctic petrels breeding at two distant localities (South Georgia and Kerguelen). Petrels showed species-specific wintering habitat preferences, with a similar pattern of latitudinal segregation for all but one taxon. At both localities, delta13C values indicated that blue petrels (Halobaena caerulea) moult in Antarctic waters, South Georgian diving petrels (Pelecanoides georgicus) in the vicinity of the archipelagos and/or in the Polar Frontal Zone and Antarctic prions (Pachyptila desolata) in warmer waters. In contrast, common diving petrels (Pelecanoides urinatrix) showed divergent strategies, with low and high intrapopulation variation at South Georgia and Kerguelen, respectively. Birds from Kerguelen dispersed over a much wider range of habitats, from coastal to oceanic waters and from Antarctica to the subtropics, whereas those from South Georgia wintered mainly in waters around the archipelago. This study is the first to show such striking between-population heterogeneity in individual wintering strategies, which could have important implications for likely demographic responses to environmental perturbation.  相似文献

Physical, chemical and biological variables were quantified in 19 subantarctic lakes (South Georgia) as a prelude to comparing these pristine systems with temperate lakes and to improve the knowledge of spatial and temporal variation in water chemistry and abundances of organisms. Lakes close to the sea had higher phosphorus concentrations, contained higher abundances of most organisms, and had higher number of invertebrate species than lakes situated further from the sea. Differences were attributed to higher nutrient input from marine organisms, such as penguins, seals and petrels, and probably also to a somewhat longer ice-free period. Since the lakes of South Georgia lack fish, the pelagic invertebrate fauna is dominated by herbivorous macrozooplankton. Rotifers are rare in the open water and are restricted to the vegetation (mainly mosses) in shallow areas and to the sediment surface. Generally, the algal abundance at the sediment surface is high in subantarctic lakes, indicating that the main part of the primary production is provided by benthic algae, which is in contrast to what is normally the case in temperate waters.  相似文献

Tape recordings of two types of vocalisations were used to assess burrow occupancy by white-chinned petrels (Procellaria aequinoctialis) at South Georgia. Birds responded to the rattle call on 74% of occasions and a wheezy call on 85%, with only 10% failing to respond to both calls played one after the other. Occupancy was determined throughout the pre-egg and incubation period and results confirmed what is known about patterns of occupancy by white-chinned petrels. Adults in burrows known to hatch a chick responded on average to 69% of recordings during incubation and less than 10% in only 4% of burrows. Significant inter-site and inter-annual variations in occupancy were recorded, suggesting that this method is sensitive to changes in the number of petrels returning to breed. Giant petrels are the chief scavenging seabirds in the Southern Ocean. Quantitatively analysed regurgitations from chicks of both Macronectes halli and M. giganteus at Bird Island, South Georgia throughout the chick rearing period consisted predominantly of adult Macaroni penguins Eudyptes chrysolophus. Significant quantities of burrowing petrels and krill were taken but the amount varied in different years. Only male M. halli fed regularly at fur seal carcases. Although 10 species were found in regurgitations, squid were unimportant in the diet. Fish are possibly more important during the winter.
Intersexual differences in diet were of greater significance than interspecific ones with males taking more carrion and females more crustaceans. Chicks were fed during both day and night and in both species males received significantly more food than females during the fledging period. M. giganteus chicks received more than M. halli at all ages.
Despite their extensive reliance on carrion both species take a variety of prey and this may be especially important during the winter when penguin and seal carrion is scarce.  相似文献

A total of 547 sightings of 291 banded wandering albatrosses Diomedea exulans and 21 sightings of 14 banded giant petrels Macronectes spp. were made from toothfish longliners operating on the southern Patagonian Shelf during 2001–2005. This included 25% of the wandering albatrosses with Darvic bands that bred at Bird Island (South Georgia) during this period. Thirteen of the northern Macronectes halli and southern giant petrels Macronectes giganteus had been banded at South Georgia, and there was one sighting of a southern giant petrel from Argentina. Male and female wandering albatrosses of all age classes except young birds (<15 years old) were equally likely to attend longline vessels. Most sightings of all age classes were made during the incubation period and fewest during the brood period. Eighty-six percent of birds sighted had bred at least once before, with half currently breeding and half on sabbatical (i.e. between breeding attempts). Almost half of the wandering albatrosses were sighted on more than one occasion. The data confirms that the southern Patagonian shelf is an important foraging area for wandering albatrosses and northern and southern giant petrels, and that some individuals show consistent associations in multiple years with longline vessels fishing in the region.  相似文献

The diet of two small burrow dwelling petrels, Dove prion, Pachyptila desolata and Blue petrel Halobaena caerulea , was studied at the subantarctic island of South Georgia by quantitative analysis of 246 food samples regurgitated by adults about to feed chicks. Crustaceans, and particularly krill Euphausia superba , predominate in both species' diet but fish is considerably more important to the Blue petrel. Other dietary differences between the species chiefly involve the relative proportions of krill, copepods (nearly exclusive to Dove prion) and seven amphipod species taken.
There is no overlap in the species' chick feeding periods but food differences are likely to reflect prey selection rather than resource availability; differences in prey size are ascribed to use of different feeding techniques particularly relating to bill structure and function. Data on frequency of chick feeding, proportion of oil and presence of pumice in food samples are used to indicate that the Blue petrel feeds further away from the breeding colony than the Dove prion. The significance of the various adaptive differences is discussed.  相似文献

Moult scores were collected from colour-ringed individuals of known reproductive status of the two species of giant petrel, Macronectes halli and M. giganteus , at Bird Island, South Georgia between 1978–81.
Both species showed a substantial overlap between breeding and wing-moult, unlike most other Southern Ocean seabirds. Males started moult before females and both sexes of M. giganteus moulted at an earlier stage of the breeding cycle than M. halli , which breeds six weeks earlier than its congener.
Changes in moult rate during the breeding season are documented for both species, with Id. halli showing a rapid increase as the chick nears fledging. Male M. giganteus show a notably different pattern to the other three species-sex groups, starting moult much earlier (at egg-laying), with greater individual synchrony and usually suspending primary moult throughout the main chick growth period, whereas only two male M. halli and no females of either species suspended moult. Differences in pattern, timing and rate of moult are interpreted in terms of availability of food resources and the competing energy demands of other activities, especially chick-rearing.
Completion of primary moult could not be observed in the field but was estimated using data frcsm non-breeding birds and failed breeders; the latter started a rapid moult almost immediately they failed. In both sexes of both species moult is probably concluded at least by early winter.
The general pattern of moult in giant petrels at Bird Island is contrasted with that of other populations and species of Southern Ocean seabirds. It is suggested that the unusually extensive overlap between breeding and moult in giant petrels is a consequence of the very abundant and easily available summer food supplies (especially carrion) and the much diminished winter resources, favouring a completion of moult by the beginning of the winter.  相似文献

During the incubation period, white-chinned petrels, Procellaria aequinoctialis, repeatedly make foraging trips of several thousand kilometres in the open ocean from their small isolated breeding island. To test whether these birds rely on geomagnetic information to home, we displaced five individuals and released them in the open sea 300-360 km from home. They were prevented both from using route-based information during the passive displacement from the breeding island to the release site, and from using the geomagnetic field at the release site and on their way home (by carrying a mobile magnet on the head). They were equipped with satellite transmitters to record their homing movements. The five petrels homed efficiently (in 17-32 h) along paths that were on average slightly less than twice the homing distance. This showed that, at least when within a few hundred kilometres of home, white-chinned petrels are able to home successfully by relying only on nongeomagnetic site-dependent information. Parametric and nonparametric analyses were used to investigate the relationships between the populations of viable microbes and 4 edaphic variables — soil moisture, rainfall, temperature, and pH. Microbial populations were sampled over a 2-year period in contrasting grass and moss stands on the subantarctic island of South Georgia. Moisture was found to be the most significant edaphic variable, but there were highly significant correlations between bacterial and fungal populations at both sites. Individual plant species showed clear correlations with both bacterial and fungal populations.  相似文献

The composition and distribution of microphytoplankton assemblages in the vicinity of South Georgia were examined during a krill survey conducted during voyage 119 the RV Africana in austral summer (January/February) 1994. Microphytoplankton distribution was studied at 83 stations along a zig-zag transect in the waters surrounding South Georgia. Oceanographic and zooplankton data suggest that conditions were anomalous during the investigation, in that sub-Antarctic surface waters had probably been advected southwards and were present around the island. The two most widely distributed species were Corethron criophilum and Eucampia antarctica, which were recorded at all stations sampled. Also well-represented amongst the microphytoplankton assemblages were temperate, neritic species such as Chaetoceros atlanticus, Proboscia alata and Odontella weissflogii. This can probably be related to the intrusion of sub-Antarctic surface waters unusually far south. Cluster and ordination analysis identified three distinct groupings of stations in the waters surrounding the islands. These were found to the east, west and north of the islands. The diatom groupings identified during this investigation broadly correspond to three water masses previously described in the vicinity of South Georgia. Despite the anomalous hydrographical conditions that existed during the investigation, the differences in phytoplankton were negligible when compared to normal years. Historical records suggest that the petrels of Round Island (near Mauritius, Indian Ocean) represent a recent, long‐distance colonization by species originating from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The majority of petrels on Round Island appear most similar to Pterodroma arminjoniana, a species whose only other breeding locality is Trindade Island in the South Atlantic. Using nine microsatellite loci, patterns of genetic differentiation in petrels from Round and Trindade Islands were analysed. The two populations exhibit low but significant levels of differentiation in allele frequencies and estimates of migration rate between islands using genetic data are also low, supporting the hypothesis that these populations have recently separated but are now isolated from one another. A second population of petrels, most similar in appearance to the Pacific species P. neglecta, is also present on Round Island and observations suggest that the two petrel species are hybridizing. Vocalizations recorded on the island also suggest that hybrid birds may be present within the population. Data from microsatellite genotypes support this hypothesis and indicate that there may have been many generations of hybridization and back‐crossing between P. arminjoniana and P. neglecta on Round Island. Our results provide an insight into the processes of dispersal and the consequences of secondary contact in Procellariiformes.  相似文献
