The dynamic movements associated with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during jump landing suggest that limb segment angular velocity can provide important information for understanding the conditions that lead to an injury. Angular velocity measures could provide a quick and simple method of assessing injury risk without the constraints of a laboratory. The objective of this study was to assess the inter-subject variations and the sensitivity of the thigh and shank segment angular velocity in order to determine if these measures could be used to characterize jump landing mechanisms. Additionally, this study tested the correlation between angular velocity and the knee abduction moment. Thirty-six healthy participants (18 male) performed drop jumps with bilateral and unilateral landing. Thigh and shank angular velocities were measured by a wearable inertial-based system, and external knee moments were measured using a marker-based system. Discrete parameters were extracted from the data and compared between systems. For both jumping tasks, the angular velocity curves were well defined movement patterns with high inter-subject similarity in the sagittal plane and moderate to good similarity in the coronal and transverse planes. The angular velocity parameters were also able to detect differences between the two jumping tasks that were consistent across subjects. Furthermore, the coronal angular velocities were significantly correlated with the knee abduction moment (R of 0.28-0.51), which is a strong indicator of ACL injury risk. This study suggested that the thigh and shank angular velocities, which describe the angular dynamics of the movement, should be considered in future studies about ACL injury mechanisms.  相似文献

Objective analysis of hand and finger kinematics is important to increase understanding of hand function and to quantify motor symptoms for clinical diagnosis. The aim of this paper is to compare a new 3D measurement system containing multiple miniature inertial sensors (PowerGlove) with an opto-electronic marker system during specific finger tasks in three healthy subjects. Various finger movements tasks were performed: flexion, fast flexion, tapping, hand open/closing, ab/adduction and circular pointing. 3D joint angles of the index finger joints and position of the thumb and index were compared between systems. Median root mean square differences of the main joint angles of interest ranged between 3.3 and 8.4deg. Largest differences were found in fast and circular pointing tasks, mainly in range of motion. Smallest differences for all 3D joint angles were observed in the flexion tasks. For fast finger tapping, the thumb/index amplitude showed a median difference of 15.8mm. Differences could be explained by skin movement artifacts caused by relative marker movements of the marker system, particularly during fast tasks; large movement accelerations and angular velocities which exceeded the range of the inertial sensors; and by differences in segment calibrations between systems. The PowerGlove is a system that can be of value to measure 3D hand and finger kinematics and positions in an ambulatory setting. The reported differences need to be taken into account when applying the system in studies understanding the hand function and quantifying hand motor symptoms in clinical practice.  相似文献

Sensory stimulation of wrist musculature can enhance stability in the proximal arm and may be a useful therapy aimed at improving arm control post-stroke. Specifically, our prior research indicates tendon vibration can enhance stability during point-to-point arm movements and in tracking tasks. The goal of the present study was to investigate the influence of forearm tendon vibration on endpoint stability, measured at the hand, immediately following forward arm movements in an unstable environment. Both proximal and distal workspaces were tested. Ten hemiparetic stroke subjects and 5 healthy controls made forward arm movements while grasping the handle of a two-joint robotic arm. At the end of each movement, the robot applied destabilizing forces. During some trials, 70 Hz vibration was applied to the forearm flexor muscle tendons. 70 Hz was used as the stimulus frequency as it lies within the range of optimal frequencies that activate the muscle spindles at the highest response rate. Endpoint position, velocity, muscle activity and grip force data were compared before, during and after vibration. Stability at the endpoint was quantified as the magnitude of oscillation about the target position, calculated from the power of the tangential velocity data. Prior to vibration, subjects produced unstable, oscillating hand movements about the target location due to the applied force field. Stability increased during vibration, as evidenced by decreased oscillation in hand tangential velocity.  相似文献

Normal subjects and cerebellar patients were instructed to arrest “as soon as possible” a ballistically initiated flexion movement of the forearm. The intentional actions consist essentially of a downward torque, the peak value of which has almost a constant latency (about 200 msec) from the beginning of the movement. A variable number of oscillations precede the arrest of the movement, the characteristics of which depend on the initial velocity of the flexion and on the mass with which the forearm is loaded. The motor commands responsible for the intentionally produced downward torque are controlled centrally as to leave the ratio between the peak values of the angular velocity which precede and follow the peak of the torque almost constant, under all conditions. To describe the oscillations a simple analytical model was proposed which includes the mechanical as well as the reflex factors, the latter under the form of a delayed velocity term. The satisfactory fitting of this model to the experimental findings permitted to establish the following points:
  1. The oscillations are sustained by both a mechanical and a reflex stiffness. The contribution of the reflex loop is however quantitatively dominant since it accounts for about 75% of the inertial torque. It is fairly constant over the range of frequency of the oscillations considered.
  2. Under the imposed experimental conditions angular velocity appears to be the parameter of the movement which is predominantly sensed and fed back by the reflex loop.
Data were also presented on the performance of the motor task by patients who underwent surgical ablations of the cerebellar cortex. Comparison of these results with those of normal subjects strongly supports the hypothesis that cerebellar-related activities are instrumental in determining the sensitivity of the stretch reflex to angular velocity.  相似文献

The study of hand and finger movement is an important topic with applications in prosthetics, rehabilitation, and ergonomics. Surface electromyography (sEMG) is the gold standard for the analysis of muscle activation. Previous studies investigated the optimal electrode number and positioning on the forearm to obtain information representative of muscle activation and robust to movements. However, the sEMG spatial distribution on the forearm during hand and finger movements and its changes due to different hand positions has never been quantified. The aim of this work is to quantify 1) the spatial localization of surface EMG activity of distinct forearm muscles during dynamic free movements of wrist and single fingers and 2) the effect of hand position on sEMG activity distribution. The subjects performed cyclic dynamic tasks involving the wrist and the fingers. The wrist tasks and the hand opening/closing task were performed with the hand in prone and neutral positions. A sensorized glove was used for kinematics recording. sEMG signals were acquired from the forearm muscles using a grid of 112 electrodes integrated into a stretchable textile sleeve. The areas of sEMG activity have been identified by a segmentation technique after a data dimensionality reduction step based on Non Negative Matrix Factorization applied to the EMG envelopes. The results show that 1) it is possible to identify distinct areas of sEMG activity on the forearm for different fingers; 2) hand position influences sEMG activity level and spatial distribution. This work gives new quantitative information about sEMG activity distribution on the forearm in healthy subjects and provides a basis for future works on the identification of optimal electrode configuration for sEMG based control of prostheses, exoskeletons, or orthoses. An example of use of this information for the optimization of the detection system for the estimation of joint kinematics from sEMG is reported.  相似文献

Skilled piano performance requires considerable movement control to accomplish the high levels of timing and force precision common among professional musicians, who acquire piano technique over decades of practice. Finger movement efficiency in particular is an important factor when pianists perform at very fast tempi. We document the finger movement kinematics of highly skilled pianists as they performed a five-finger melody at very fast tempi. A three-dimensional motion-capture system tracked the movements of finger joints, the hand, and the forearm of twelve pianists who performed on a digital piano at successively faster tempi (7–16 tones/s) until they decided to stop. Joint angle trajectories computed for all adjacent finger phalanges, the hand, and the forearm (wrist angle) indicated that the metacarpophalangeal joint contributed most to the vertical fingertip motion while the proximal and distal interphalangeal joints moved slightly opposite to the movement goal (finger extension). An efficiency measure of the combined finger joint angles corresponded to the temporal accuracy and precision of the pianists’ performances: Pianists with more efficient keystroke movements showed higher precision in timing and force measures. Keystroke efficiency and individual joint contributions remained stable across tempo conditions. Individual differences among pianists supported the view that keystroke efficiency is required for successful fast performance.  相似文献

Muscle activation patterns of the quadriceps and hamstrings were studied in normal human subjects walking at comfortable speed on a treadmill. In addition knee angular velocity patterns and swing and stance phases of the step cycle were recorded. Data were collected from normal paces and from paces in which a momentary unexpected resistance was applied to the leg during swing. The application of the resistance caused an advance in the onset of both quadriceps and hamstrings activity. The latency of the onset of activity following the resistance in the quadriceps was 78.2 +/- 26.4 ms and this was considered to indicate a long latency stretch reflex. There was a close association between the onset of quadriceps and hamstrings activity both in the normal and resistance paces. The changes observed in knee angular velocity upon application of the resistance indicate tight control of angular velocity patterns. The results have important implications regarding neural control of muscle during purposive movement and the regulation of sensitivity of muscle receptors during such movements, especially during the periods when the muscle is normally inactive.  相似文献

The present study investigates how the CNS deals with the omnipresent force of gravity during arm motor planning. Previous studies have reported direction-dependent kinematic differences in the vertical plane; notably, acceleration duration was greater during a downward than an upward arm movement. Although the analysis of acceleration and deceleration phases has permitted to explore the integration of gravity force, further investigation is necessary to conclude whether feedforward or feedback control processes are at the origin of this incorporation. We considered that a more detailed analysis of the temporal features of vertical arm movements could provide additional information about gravity force integration into the motor planning. Eight subjects performed single joint vertical arm movements (45° rotation around the shoulder joint) in two opposite directions (upwards and downwards) and at three different speeds (slow, natural and fast). We calculated different parameters of hand acceleration profiles: movement duration (MD), duration to peak acceleration (D PA), duration from peak acceleration to peak velocity (D PA-PV), duration from peak velocity to peak deceleration (D PV-PD), duration from peak deceleration to the movement end (D PD-End), acceleration duration (AD), deceleration duration (DD), peak acceleration (PA), peak velocity (PV), and peak deceleration (PD). While movement durations and amplitudes were similar for upward and downward movements, the temporal structure of acceleration profiles differed between the two directions. More specifically, subjects performed upward movements faster than downward movements; these direction-dependent asymmetries appeared early in the movement (i.e., before PA) and lasted until the moment of PD. Additionally, PA and PV were greater for upward than downward movements. Movement speed also changed the temporal structure of acceleration profiles. The effect of speed and direction on the form of acceleration profiles is consistent with the premise that the CNS optimises motor commands with respect to both gravitational and inertial constraints.  相似文献

In order to evaluate the impact of prolonged support deprivation on the mechanisms of ocular saccadic movement generation, four volunteers were tested immediately before seven-day dry immersion and on the day of its completion. The task consisted of tapping random light stimuli emerging on the periphery of a sensory screen. During testing, the subject??s head was kept in a fixed position. The subjects could suppress the stimuli in two ways: (1) by touching an appropriate area on the screen with their fingers with gaze shifting and fixation accompanying coordinated hand movement or (2) by clicking the computer mouse button after gaze fixation on the stimulus. The movement pattern of each eye was recorded and analyzed in the infrared frequency of 200 Hz. It is assumed that the identical effects of immersion on the dependence of the peak saccade velocity on its amplitude in tests where the two methods of stimulus tapping were used suggest saccade acceleration after immersion as a direct effect of prolonged support deprivation.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to address some of the factors that contribute to the human ability to detect the presence of weak electric fields generated by direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) sources. An exposure chamber allowed us to expose a limited surface of the body (forearm and hand) to DC fields of up to 65 kV/m and AC fields up to a maximum of 35 kV/m (frequency 60 Hz). Perception was examined using a staircase procedure and a rating procedure derived from signal detection theory. Sixteen subjects participated in the experiments, and none detected the local DC fields. In contrast, 9/16 subjects were sensitive to local AC electric fields, although detection thresholds (index of sensitivity, d' = 1.0) were widely variable between subjects. When regional exposure was limited to the dorsal forearm, performance was similar to that seen when the forearm and hand were exposed. In contrast, subjects did not reliably detect the AC electric fields when exposure was limited to the hand (either hairy or glabrous skin), although a minority of subjects (3/9) showed some evidence of detecting fields presented to the glabrous palm. Subjects were unable to detect AC electric fields when the hair was removed from the forearm and hand, suggesting that the evoked sensation is mainly dependent on movement of hair located in the exposed region.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of an acute dose of DDAVP on speed and consistency of planning and execution of simple and complex movements in healthy young adults. A simple reaction time task (SRT), a simple movement task (SMT), and a complex movement task (CMT) were performed with and without a 0.6 ml intranasal dose (60 micrograms) of DDAVP. Results indicated DDAVP-treated individuals planned and executed CMT and SRT tasks faster and more consistently than did placebo-treated subjects. There were nonsignificant DDAVP effects on speed and variability of both RT and MT processes involved in the SMT.  相似文献

We aimed to determine the role of the wrist, elbow and shoulder joints to single-finger tapping. Six human subjects tapped with their index finger at a rate of 3 taps/s on a keyswitch across five conditions, one freestyle (FS) and four instructed tapping strategies. The four instructed conditions were to tap on a keyswitch using the finger joint only (FO), the wrist joint only (WO), the elbow joint only (EO), and the shoulder joint only (SO). A single-axis force plate measured the fingertip force. An infra-red active-marker three-dimensional motion analysis system measured the movement of the fingertip, hand, forearm, upper arm and trunk. Inverse dynamics estimated joint torques for the metacarpal-phalangeal (MCP), wrist, elbow, and shoulder joints. For FS tapping 27%, 56%, and 18% of the vertical fingertip movement were a result of flexion of the MCP joint and wrist joint and extension of the elbow joint, respectively. During the FS movements the net joint powers between the MCP, wrist and elbow were positively correlated (correlation coefficients between 0.46 and 0.76) suggesting synergistic efforts. For the instructed tapping strategies (FO, WO, EO, and SO), correlations decreased to values below 0.35 suggesting relatively independent control of the different joints. For FS tapping, the kinematic and kinetic data indicate that the wrist and elbow contribute significantly, working in synergy with the finger joints to create the fingertip tapping task.  相似文献

Flexible biaxial goniometers are extensively used for measuring wrist positions and movements. However, they display an inherent crosstalk error. The aim was to evaluate the effect, of this error, on summary measures used for characterizing manual work. A goniometer and a torsiometer were combined into one device. An algorithm that effectively compensated for crosstalk was developed. Recordings from 25 women, performing five worktasks, were analyzed, both with and without compensation for crosstalk. The errors in the 10th, 50th and 90th percentiles of the flexion/extension distributions were small, on average <1 degrees. The ulnar/radial deviation distributions were weakly dependent on forearm position. The flexion/extension velocity measures were, for the 50th and 90th percentiles, as well as the mean velocity, consistently underestimated by, on average, 3.9%. For ulnar/radial deviation, the velocity errors were less consistent. Mean power frequency, which is a measure of repetitiveness, was insensitive (error <1%) to crosstalk. The forearm supination/pronation angular distributions were wider, and the velocities higher, than for the wrists. Considering wrist/hand exposure in epidemiologic studies, as well as for establishing and surveillance of exposure limits for prevention of work-related upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders, the crosstalk error can, when considering other errors and sources to variation, be disregarded.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate thumb postures, thumb movements and muscle activity when using mobile phones for SMS messaging and to determine whether there were differences in these exposures (a) across various mobile phone tasks, (b) between gender and (c) between subjects with and without musculoskeletal symptoms in shoulders and upper extremities. Fifty-six young adults (15 healthy and 41 with musculoskeletal symptoms) performed a series of distinct tasks on a mobile phone. Muscular load in four forearm/hand muscles in the right arm and the right and left trapezius muscles were measured using electromyography (EMG). Thumb movements were registered using an electrogoniometer. The results showed that postures (sitting or standing) and the type of mobile phone task (holding the phone versus texting) affected muscle activity and thumb positions. Females compared to males had higher muscle activity in the extensor digitorum and the abductor pollicis longus when entering SMS messages and tended to have greater thumb abduction, higher thumb movement velocities and fewer pauses in the thumb movements. Subjects with symptoms had lower muscle activity levels in the abductor pollicis longus and tended to have higher thumb movement velocities and fewer pauses in the thumb movements compared to those without symptoms.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was twofold: (1) to evaluate the reliability of distance measures computed from a principal component analysis (PCA) of electromyographic (EMG) waveforms of trunk muscles recorded during standardized trunk movements and (2) to evaluate their sensitivity to the load lifted, the trunk range of motion (ROM) and to low back status. Thirty-three male subjects (18 normals, 15 suffering from non specific CLBP) aged between 35-45 years participated. The EMG signals from 12 trunk muscles and the kinematics of trunk segments were recorded during 12 tasks. The subjects performed flexion-extension and lateral bending (left and right) tasks (three complete cycles) with and without a 12 kg load and at different trunk ROM (maximal or at defined submaximal angles). Distance measures locating each subject relative to a reference PCA model were computed for each muscle and task. The reliability of these distance measures was evaluated for 10 subjects (five normals and five CLBP) who performed two tasks on three different days. The reliability of distance measures was acceptable for agonist muscles only. The distance measures were sensitive to the load lifted and to the trunk ROM for different muscles and tasks but poorly sensitive to low back status. Several reasons that could explain the low sensitivity of these measures to low back status are discussed and potential solutions are proposed. A procedure based on a reliability analysis is proposed to select the number of principal components to include in the reference PCA model. It is expected that the refinement of the method used in this study could provide an effective clinical tool to assess EMG waveforms of trunk muscles during dynamic tasks.  相似文献

It is well known that proprioception is composed of the senses of movement and position. Whereas tests of position sense are quite commonly used, tests of the acuity in perception of movement velocity are scarce. In the present study we examined some novel tests for assessing the sense of limb movement velocity, involving replication and discrimination of single-joint movement velocity. Specifically, we investigated: (1) whether replication of limb movement velocity is more accurate following active criterion movements as compared to passive; (2) whether antagonist muscle contraction during passive limb movement enhances velocity discrimination; (3) how criterion movement velocity influences response accuracy; (4) the relationship between movement velocity and movement extent during velocity replication; and (5) whether subjects really base discrimination of velocities on perceived velocity. Sixteen healthy subjects participated in four tests (I-IV). For each test, horizontal abductions were performed about the right glenohumeral joint from the sagittal plane. The subjects were required to actively replicate the velocity of either an active (Test I) or passive (Test II) criterion movement, or judge whether a passive/semipassive (passive during antagonist muscle contraction) movement was faster or slower than a previous passive/semipassive criterion movement (Test III/IV). The results revealed higher response accuracy for Test I compared to Test II and for slower movements compared to faster, but no difference in response accuracy between Test III and IV. For velocity discrimination, the analysis revealed that the subjects based their judgment on the difference between criterion and comparison velocity rather than time or extent cues.  相似文献

Quantification of rehabilitation progress is necessary for accurately assessing clinical treatments. A three-dimension (3D) upper extremity (UE) kinematic model was developed to obtain joint angles of the trunk, shoulder and elbow using a Vicon motion analysis system. Strict evaluation confirmed the system's accuracy and precision. As an example of application, the model was used to evaluate the upper extremity movement of eight hemiparetic stroke patients with spasticity, while completing a set of reaching tasks. Main outcome measures include kinematic variables of movement time, range of motion, peak angular velocity, and percentage of reach where peak velocity occurs. The model computed motion patterns in the affected and unaffected arms. The unaffected arm showed a larger range of motion and higher angular velocity than the affected arm. Frequency analysis (power spectrum) demonstrated lower frequency content for elbow angle and angular velocity in the affected limb when compared to the unaffected limb. The model can accurately quantify UE arm motion, which may aid in the assessment and planning of stroke rehabilitation, and help to shorten recovery time.  相似文献

We investigated how kinematic redundancy interacts with the neurophysiological control mechanisms required for smooth and accurate, rapid limb movements. Biomechanically speaking, tendon excursions are over-determined because the rotation of few joints determines the lengths and velocities of many muscles. But how different are the muscle velocity profiles induced by various, equally valid hand trajectories? We used an 18-muscle sagittal-plane arm model to calculate 100,000 feasible shoulder, elbow, and wrist joint rotations that produced valid basketball free throws with different hand trajectories, but identical initial and final hand positions and velocities. We found large differences in the eccentric and concentric muscle velocity profiles across many trajectories; even among similar trajectories. These differences have important consequences to their neural control because each trajectory will require unique, time-sensitive reflex modulation strategies. As Sherrington mentioned a century ago, failure to appropriately silence the stretch reflex of any one eccentrically contracting muscle will disrupt movement. Thus, trajectories that produce faster or more variable eccentric contractions will require more precise timing of reflex modulation across motoneuron pools; resulting in higher sensitivity to time delays, muscle mechanics, excitation/contraction dynamics, noise, errors and perturbations. By combining fundamental concepts of biomechanics and neuroscience, we propose that kinematic and muscle redundancy are, in fact, severely limited by the need to regulate reflex mechanisms in a task-specific and time-critical way. This in turn has important consequences to the learning and execution of accurate, smooth and repeatable movements—and to the rehabilitation of everyday limb movements in developmental and neurological conditions, and stroke.  相似文献

Active whisking in mice and rats is one of the fastest behaviours known in mammals and is used to guide complex behaviours such as exploration and navigation. During object contact, whisker movements are actively controlled and undergo robust changes in timing, speed and position. This study quantifies whisker movements in 6‐ to 7‐month old male and female 5xFAD mice, and their C57/SJL F1 wild‐type (WT) controls. As well as genotype, we examined sex differences and the effects of retinal degeneration (rd). Mice were filmed using a high‐speed video camera at 500 frames per second (fps), under infrared light while behaving freely in three tasks: object exploration, sequential object exploration and tunnel running. Measures of whisker position, amplitude, speed and asymmetry were extracted and analysed for each task. The 5xFAD mice had significantly altered whisker angular positions, amplitude and asymmetry during object contacts and female 5xFAD mice with rd had lower mean angular positions during object contact. There were no significant effects of genotype on sequential object exploration or on tunnel running but differences due to sex and rd were found in both tasks, with female mice making larger and faster whisker movements overall, and mice with rd making larger and faster whisker movements during object contact. There were sex differences in whisker movements during sequential object exploration and females with rd had higher whisker retraction speeds in tunnel running. These data show that measuring whisker movements can quantify genotype and sex differences and the effects of rd during exploratory behaviour in these mice.  相似文献
