Gastrointestinal (GI) parasitism are the most serious problem affecting sheep and goats worldwide. Economic losses caused by GI strongyles are related to decreased production, costs for treatment and prophylaxis and animal death. Effective control of internal parasites in small ruminants is one of the most difficult challenges encountered by veterinary in practice. For control of helminth parasites in grazing animals it is important knowledge of epidemiology of the parasite as it interacts with the host in a specific climatic, management and production environment. Sheep and goats are infected by many of the same GI nematodes, but feeding and management practices alter levels of parasitism between the two ruminants. The most commonly anthelmintics used for helminth control in small ruminants include three chemical groups: Imidazothiazoles/Pyrimidines (Im/Pm), Benzimidazoles/Probenzimidazoles (Bz/Pbz) and Macrocyclic Lactones (ML). The control of gastrointestinal strongyles infections in goats shows specific patterns. The use of anthelmintics in goats is based upon anthelmintics goats-suited dose rates taking into account the specific pharmacokinetics features of some anthelmintics in this species. Several types of control strategies: deworming programs, grazing management, biological control, supplementary feeding and breeding approaches are discussed.  相似文献

Gastrointestinal (GI) parasitism represents a severe health problem in small ruminant production systems world-wide. The objective of the present study was three-fold: (i) to assess the prevalence of GI parasitism in dairy breeds of sheep and goats in selected areas of Greece; (ii) to determine the species of existing gastrointestinal parasites; and (iii) to investigate the effect of climatic factors on the seasonal variation of parasite population dynamics in dairy sheep and goats reared in two different geographical areas of Greece. The study was conducted in four flocks of either sheep or goats that were equally allocated in northern and central Greece. In each flock, faecal samples were randomly collected from 30 animals at monthly intervals and were used for nematode egg counts and coprocultures. Two animals from each flock were slaughtered monthly and their GI tract were examined for adult worm population and identification. The study revealed that the parasitic burdens in sheep were significantly (P<0.05) higher than those in goats. Faecal egg counts for both sheep and goats were significantly (P<0.01) affected by the month of the year and there was also a significant interaction between month of the year and area of study (P<0.01). Teladorsagia, Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus and Chabertia were the most prevalent nematode genera in both sheep and goats. Such information could be useful for the development of strategic treatments when sheep and goats are reared under systems similar to those described in this study.  相似文献

Alternatives to chemicals for controlling parasites are required to minimise problems from resistance, residues in animal products and occupational exposure. Utilisation of host response to parasites through selection of resistant types or vaccination is an appealing option. To date most studies have been with haematophagous or invasive parasites which directly contact elements of the host immune system. Sheep lice (Bovicola ovis) feed superficially on the skin of sheep ingesting lipid, scurf, bacteria and loose stratum corneum squames. Evidence is presented that despite their surface feeding habit Bovicola ovis stimulate an immune response in sheep and that this response may play a part in regulating the size of louse populations.  相似文献

For nearly 40 years, irradiated larval vaccines have been available for the control of parasitic bronchitis in cattle and sheep caused by Dictyocaulus spp. Despite research on a number of other host/parasite systems, no other vaccines have been commercially successful. Vaccination could provide a useful addition to other control methods in an integrated parasite management system where the criteria for vaccine success may not be complete control and sterile immunity, but a sufficient reduction in worm burden to decrease overall reinfection levels at the flock/herd level and, hence, prevent clinical disease and subclinical effects including production loss. Indeed, vaccination against Dictyocaulus spp. relies on continued natural infection to maintain levels of immunity. However, the difficulties of producing live larval vaccines are often cited as a reason why this line of research should not be pursued. This paper discusses some of the difficulties in vaccine production and offers some solutions and recommendations for those wishing to develop and register irradiated larval vaccines for other helminth diseases.  相似文献

Livestock production systems worldwide rely largely on conventional feedstuffs. The current world food crisis highlights the need to improve the use of local resources for animal nutrition, such as fodder trees and shrubs. The detrimental effects of tropical tannin-rich plants (TRP) on animal production have been frequently described. In contrast, their potential benefits have long been neglected. This paper presents the potential positive effects of tropical TRP on small ruminants either as source of feed or as nutraceuticals with anthelmintic (AH) properties. It also analyses the host behavioral and physiological adaptations associated with exploitation of those tannin-rich resources. Both sheep and goats preferred a mixture of plants even when tannin-free forage was available. Moreover, the preference for TRP by goats and hair sheep were mainly associated with the digestible fraction of fiber and to a less extent with tannin content, which implies that they do not necessarily select against TRP. The addition of polyethylene glycol did not modify the preference or intake of TRP by goats and sheep. Evidence of physiological adaptation to TRP is presented and discussed. Both, experienced hair sheep and goats had saliva with tannin binding capacity, enabling both species to eat higher quantities of TRP which could lead to a higher availability of tannins in the gastrointestinal tract. Tannins in the gastrointestinal tract could be an AH against gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN). Indeed, in vitro and in vivo studies have shown AH effects of tannins from TRP, suggesting their possible use as natural anthelmintics against GIN. This paper supports the change in the current view of tannins in TRP as anti-nutritional compounds. If adequately managed, TRP can be a valuable component of sustainable small ruminant production systems.  相似文献

Strategic parasite control programmes of ruminant gastrointestinal nematodes requires the knowledge of parasite population dynamics. In natural conditions, ruminants, in particular sheep and goats, are infected by different species of gastrointestinal nematodes. The life cycle of these parasites is influenced by a number of factors which include climatic variations. Therefore, it is important to utilise appropriate methods to identify the parasite population both in the host and from the pasture. In this paper faecal larval cultures and pasture larval counts used for herd health monitoring of nematode infections are discussed.  相似文献

The attachment sites of female Karoo paralysis ticks (Ixodes rubicundus) and equations to assess tick burdens on domestic (sheep and goats) and natural (mountain reedbuck) hosts were determined. No intraspecific differences in attachment sites for Merino sheep and Angora goats could be observed, but interspecific differences were evident.Ixodes rubicundus in general attaches on the ventral aspects of the host. More than 50% of these ticks attached to the fron quarters of the body of the domestic host, and 60% to the hindquarters of the natural host. The length of Merino sheep wool had no affect on either the attachment site or number of attached ticks. In general, more ticks were found attached to the woollen than non-woollen body areas. Equations are provided which can estimate tick burdens on hosts by counting the ticks on two or three selected body areas of the host. To facilitate sampling procedures, approximate sample sizes for the various hosts needed to estimate average tick burdens have been provided. Depending on the level of precision required (with bounds on the error of estimation equal to 1, 2 or 5 ticks), the number of animals in a flock of 200 Angora goats that must be examined varied from 26 to 85.  相似文献

Viruses have evolved numerous mechanisms to avoid host immune reactions. Here we report a mechanism by which Parapoxvirus ovis (PPVO) interferes with antigen presentation. PPVO (orf virus) causes orf, an acute skin disease of sheep and goats worldwide. Importantly, PPVO can repeatedly infect its host in spite of a vigorous inflammatory and host immune response to the infection. We demonstrate in a mouse system that PPVO induces apoptosis in a significant number of antigen-presenting cells after intraperitoneal injection using the CD95 pathway, thus preventing a primary T-cell response. We also show that PPVO induces a compensatory activation of the immune system. Our results may help to explain the phenomenon that natural PPVO infections in sheep occur repeatedly even after short intervals. They also suggest that the combination of immunosuppressive and immunostimulatory mechanisms is an effective survival strategy that might be used in other viruses as well.  相似文献

This study documents indigenous knowledge of breeds of cattle, sheep and goats in southwestern Niger, and includes both pastoralists and agropastoralists. Our study included sheep and goats in view of the increasing importance of small ruminants in livestock production systems in the Sahel since the drought of the 1970s and 1980s. This study was carried out under the Desert Margins Program (DMP) project on arresting land degradation and the conservation of biodiversity in desert margins of sub-Saharan Africa, partly funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).  相似文献

Empirical data for a series of reproductive traits from a range of sources (National Agricultural Research Systems and individual studies) in different agro-ecological zones and under several systems of management are presented and discussed. Goats and sheep give birth for the first time at about 17 months. Litter sizes of goats average 1.38 kids and litter sizes of sheep 1.16 lambs. Intervals between births are about 10 months. Total lifetime production of young is better in goats than in sheep. African small ruminants have the capacity to breed all the year round. Better performance is achieved in traditional systems where breeding is uncontrolled than on research stations, although litter sizes generally appear to be larger on stations than in the traditional systems. Better management of the reproductive process could lead to greatly improved output of young.  相似文献

Research in fish immune system and parasite invasion mechanisms has advanced the knowledge of the mechanisms whereby parasites evade or cope with fish immune response. The main mechanisms of immune evasion employed by fish parasites are reviewed and considered under ten headings. 1) Parasite isolation: parasites develop in immuno-privileged host tissues, such as brain, gonads, or eyes, where host barriers prevent or limit the immune response. 2) Host isolation: the host cellular immune response isolates and encapsulates the parasites in a dormant stage without killing them. 3) Intracellular disguise: typical of intracellular microsporidians, coccidians and some myxosporeans. 4) Parasite migration, behavioural and environmental strategies: parasites migrate to host sites the immune response has not yet reached or where it is not strong enough to kill them, or they accommodate their life cycles to the season or the age in which the host immune system is down-regulated. 5) Antigen-based strategies such as mimicry or masking, variation and sharing of parasite antigens. 6) Anti-immune mechanisms: these allow parasites to resist innate humoral factors, to neutralize host antibodies or to scavenge reactive oxygen species within macrophages. 7) Immunodepression: parasites either suppress the fish immune systems by reducing the proliferative capacity of lymphocytes or the phagocytic activity of macrophages, or they induce apoptosis of host leucocytes. 8) Immunomodulation: parasites secrete or excrete substances which modulate the secretion of host immune factors, such as cytokines, to their own benefit. 9) Fast development: parasites proliferate faster than the ability of the host to mount a defence response. 10) Exploitation of the host immune reaction. Knowledge of the evasion strategies adopted by parasites will help us to understand host-parasite interactions and may therefore help in the discovery of novel immunotherapeutic agents or targeted vaccines, and permit the selection of host-resistant strains.  相似文献

The foraging behaviour (grazing time and diet composition), live-weight (LW) changes and parasitic infection (faecal egg counts of gastrointestinal nematodes) of 12 beef cows, 84 ewes and 84 goats suckling their offspring, managed in mixed grazing on heathlands with 24% of improved pasture of perennial ryegrass-white clover, were studied during the years 2003 and 2006. The results showed that goats tended to graze for a longer time, and utilised significantly more heathland vegetation than cattle and sheep, including in their diet in an average of 0.39 herbaceous plants, 0.11 gorse and 0.51 heather over the grazing season, comparing with respective mean values of 0.85, 0.02 and 0.13 in cattle and sheep. Dietary overlap was higher between cattle and sheep (0.76) than between sheep and goats (0.53) or between cattle and goats (0.47). Despite the high performance of autumn-calving cows in spring, sheep had the best LW changes per livestock unit (LU) during the whole grazing season. Goats' performance per LU was lower than in sheep but higher than in spring-calving cows. Regarding offspring production, lambs had higher LW gains per LU than calves and kids. Mean nematode eggs/g fresh faeces (epg) during the grazing season were higher in goats (91 epg) compared with sheep (34 epg) and cattle (14 epg), particularly from September to December. In conclusion, sheep performed best on these heathlands with improved pasture areas if the entire grazing season was considered, despite the good level of production in spring from autumn-calving cows. The results suggested the complementary use of goats in order to increase the effective utilisation of the available vegetation, achieving production levels similar to those from spring-calving cows. Therefore, mixed flocks of sheep and goats would be the most appropriate sustainable systems from the animal production and vegetation use points of view.  相似文献

In this study a cELISA for the diagnosis of brucellosis due to B. melitensis in sheep and goats was evaluated and its capability of discriminating vaccinated from infected animals was assessed. Information is provided indicating that the cELISA has a diagnostic sensitivity (99.4%) and specificity (98.9%) in sheep and goats comparable to that of many standard indirect ELISA methods. In addition, the test proved able to distinguish between vaccinated and infected animals with an accuracy of up to 90% and results reproducibility of 93%. It was concluded that the cELISA could be useful for differentiation of Rev.1 vaccinated and naturally infected sheep and goats.  相似文献

Muellerius capillaris was the only species of nematode recovered from the lungs of young and adult sheep and goats of north-east Zaire. The prevalences were of 19% (sheep) and 32% (goats). The slug Atoxon pallens contained larvae in natural conditions and represents a potential intermediate host. The land snails Achatinidae (Achatina stuhlmanni and Limicolaria spp.) could not be experimentally infected with M. capillaris larvae.  相似文献

Gastrointestinal strongylosis are the dominant parasitic infections of sheep and goats. The successful control of these parasites cannot be done exclusively with anthelmintics, but the first step is an integrated program for environmental prophylaxis. The correct planning of the prophylaxis program has to be preceded by the analysis of the related problems: (1) the parasitological status of farm livestock; (2) knowledge of the farm management; (3) hydrogeological, pedological and climatic-environmental aspects. The environmental control strategies can be resumed as follows: avoiding animals from different farms to share the same pasture; avoiding animals of different age classes to graze together; parcel the pastures to permit a rational rotation; rotational grazing of pastures according to the seasonal development of parasites; stocking rate; young animals grazing ahead of the older animal ones; crop management practices (draining, ploughing, harrowing, scrub clearing, fertilizing, etc.). These measures make the habitat less suitable for the free-living stages of gastrointestinal strongyles, reducing the potential of infection of the same pastures.  相似文献

Gastrointestinal nematode parasitism is the most important disease affecting livestock production systems in developing countries, particularly small ruminant production systems. Of particular importance are infections with the strongyle Haemonchus contortus. Integrated disease control strategies are required, including improved management, nutrition and wise use of anthelmintic chemicals. Increasingly, selection of sheep or goats for improved nematode resistance is viewed as a valuable option to complement other control measures. Breeding for resistance is possible because of the existence of extensive genetic variation in resistance, both within and between breeds of sheep and goats. Such breeding schemes are most likely to be based on choice of appropriate breeds adapted to the local environmental conditions, followed by phenotypic selection for resistance. Goal and selection objective traits are likely to include performance (e.g. growth rate) under conditions of parasite challenge, faecal egg count (FEC) and measures of anaemia. With current technologies, genetic markers are likely to be too expensive and logistically difficult to incorporate into breeding schemes in tropical or developing countries. Genotype by environment interactions may be expected, particularly when comparing animals in environments that differ in the extent of parasite challenge or differ in the quality of available nutrition. However, there is no reason to expect antagonistic genetic relationships between performance and resistance, and selection indices should be readily constructed that improve both performance and resistance. If FEC is decreased, then pasture contamination should also decrease, leading to additional benefits for all sheep grazing the same pasture. Finally, breeding for nematode resistance should lead to lasting and sustained improvements in resistance or tolerance. There is no empirical evidence to suggest that nematodes will evolve rapidly in response to resistant hosts, and mathematical models based on genetic and biological principles also suggest that resistance should be sustainable.  相似文献

Lungworm infections (parasitic bronchitis) of sheep and goats are widely prevalent in hilly regions of India and neighbouring countries. Several species of strongyloid nematodes are involved but the most prevalent, and most pathogenic, is Dictyocaulus filaria - responsible for heavy mortality in young animals and severe morbidity in survivors. Control of these parasites now relies on a gamma-attenuated D. filaria vaccine developed in India in 1971. Vaccination of 6-week-old lambs has since become an accepted part of the regular sheep husbandry practice in India, and trials are now underway to extend use of the vaccine to goats, and to set up similar vaccination procedures in other countries. In this review, the authors trace the development of the D. filaria vaccine, highlighting its production and application. Although imperfect, the vaccine is now making a substantial contribution to improved sheep rearing by pastoral in the northern hill areas of India.  相似文献

The development of subunit vaccines against most parasitic helminth infections will require a better understanding of the different components of a natural rejection process including (1) recognition of parasite antigens; (2) induction of protective immune response phenotypes; and (3) activation of appropriate immune effector mechanisms. While novel technologies have allowed significant progress to be made in the identification of candidate vaccine antigens, the large scale production of these antigens and their presentation to the host with appropriate adjuvant systems remains a major problem in vaccine research. Identification of the molecular interactions involved in the innate immune response to helminth infections and the application of new genomic and proteomic technologies are likely to lead to major advances in these research fields. Gastrointestinal nematode parasites and liver fluke are the most important helminth parasites of production animals. In recent years, a lot of new knowledge has been gathered on the immunobiology of the host-parasite interactions in these two infection systems, which has allowed new vaccination strategies to be considered. Functional genomic technologies such as gene expression analysis by microarrays, promise to further advance our understanding of the molecular pathways leading to protection against parasite infections. This will not only have implications for vaccine research, but also provide novel targets for drug development and genetic selection.  相似文献
