Colorectal cancer can develop through molecular, chromosomal, and epigenetic cumulative changes that transform the normal intestinal epithelium into the colorectal polyps, called conventional adenomas (CAs) or serrated polyps (SPs), recognized as precursors of invasive colorectal neoplasia. These benign lesions need to explore the morphology, histological diagnosis, and biomarkers profile to accurately characterize lesions with potential for evolution to cancer. This study aimed to correlate the immunohistochemical expression of Parkin and Adenomatous Polyposis Coli (APC; tumor suppressors), Human Apurinic/Apyrimidinic endonuclease 1 (APE1), and B-cell lymphoma-extra-large (Bcl-xL; oncogenic proteins) in sporadic colorectal polyps with clinical, endoscopic, and diagnostic data. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed on tissue microarray samples of 306 polyps. Based on the Allred score, the expressions were graduated in the cytoplasm and nucleus of superficial and cryptic cells. There was higher Parkin nuclear expression (p=0.006 and 0.010) and APC cytoplasmic expression in cryptic cells (p<0.001) in SPs. CAs, APE1 (p<0.001) and Bcl-xL (p<0.001) were more expressed in the nuclei and cytoplasms, respectively. These results are related to the biological role proposed for these proteins in cellular functions. They can contribute to the diagnosis criteria for polyps and improve the knowledge of biomarkers that could predict cancer development:  相似文献

目的:分析胃底腺息肉与胃增生性息肉的临床、内镜下等特点。方法:回顾性搜集胃镜检出的经病理证实的胃底腺息肉和胃增生性息肉393例纳入分析,按年龄、性别、发生部位、大小、幽门螺杆菌(helicobacter pylori)感染状态、是否使用质子泵抑制剂(proton pump inhibitor)等因素进行分析比较。结果:393例增生性息肉与胃底腺息肉中,男178例,女215例,男女比例为1:1.2,年龄28~89岁。随着年龄的增高,胃息肉发生率越高,但各年龄段分布差异无统计学意义(P>0.05)。不同部位的增生性息肉与胃底腺性息肉大小相比差异有统计学意义(P<0.05)。两种胃息肉的性别分布差异有统计学意义(P<0.05)。增生性息肉H.pylori感染率较胃底腺性息肉高(P<0.05),而胃底腺息肉质子泵抑制剂使用率较胃增生性息肉高(P<0.05)。结论:增生性息肉与幽门螺旋杆菌感染有关,胃底腺息肉与质子泵抑制剂使用有关。对胃底腺息肉与胃增生性息肉的临床、内镜特点的分析有助于胃镜检查对胃息肉性质的初步判断,提高诊断的准确性。  相似文献

The present study examines (1) the cost of reproduction on colony growth, and (2) relationships among sexual maturity, whole-colony mortality rate and colony growth rate inGoniastrea aspera free from external influences by macrobenthos. Survival of colonies in permanent plots was followed for two years. Egg production by polyps in colonies collected just before the first spawning of a year was estimated by dissecting the polyps. Growth of the colonies (increase in number of polyps) was followed over one annual reproductive cycle. The cost of egg production on colony growth was apparent through colony ontogeny: (1) immature colonies had a greater annual growth rate than mature colonies, but produced almost no eggs; (2) in mature colonies, growth rate was negatively correlated with NE/PV (number of eggs per polyp volume mm-3). Annual whole-colony mortality was high in colonies with fewer than11 polyps in initial colony size, while mortality was extremely low once a colony grew beyond this size. This critical size for low whole-colony mortality was much smaller than the colony size (40 polyps) which would attain maturity one year later. Age at maturity was estimated as six years. While survival to maturity may be a selective force for the evolution of delayed maturation, the present data suggest that high colony fecundity, achieved after a long growth period as an immature colony, and an abrupt decrease of colony growth rate after maturation are the crucial forces.  相似文献

Objectives

To quantify the incremental benefit of computer-assisted-detection (CAD) for polyps, for inexperienced readers versus experienced readers of CT colonography.

Methods

10 inexperienced and 16 experienced radiologists interpreted 102 colonography studies unassisted and with CAD utilised in a concurrent paradigm. They indicated any polyps detected on a study sheet. Readers’ interpretations were compared against a ground-truth reference standard: 46 studies were normal and 56 had at least one polyp (132 polyps in total). The primary study outcome was the difference in CAD net benefit (a combination of change in sensitivity and change in specificity with CAD, weighted towards sensitivity) for detection of patients with polyps.

Results

Inexperienced readers’ per-patient sensitivity rose from 39.1% to 53.2% with CAD and specificity fell from 94.1% to 88.0%, both statistically significant. Experienced readers’ sensitivity rose from 57.5% to 62.1% and specificity fell from 91.0% to 88.3%, both non-significant. Net benefit with CAD assistance was significant for inexperienced readers but not for experienced readers: 11.2% (95%CI 3.1% to 18.9%) versus 3.2% (95%CI -1.9% to 8.3%) respectively.

Conclusions

Concurrent CAD resulted in a significant net benefit when used by inexperienced readers to identify patients with polyps by CT colonography. The net benefit was nearly four times the magnitude of that observed for experienced readers. Experienced readers did not benefit significantly from concurrent CAD.  相似文献

Jellyfish blooms cause problems worldwide, and they may increase with global warming, water pollution, and over fishing. Benthic polyps (scyphistomae) asexually produce buds and small jellyfish (ephyrae), and this process may determine the population size of the large, swimming scyphomedusae. Environmental factors that affect the asexual reproduction rates include food, temperature, salinity, and light. In this study, polyps of Aurelia aurita (L.), which inhabit Tapong Bay, southwest Taiwan, were tested in nine combinations of temperature (20, 25, 30°C) and light intensity (372, 56, and 0 lux) in a 12 h light–12 h dark photoperiod. Production of new buds decreased with warmer temperature and stronger light intensity. Warm temperature accelerated strobilation and increased the daily production of ephyrae. The proportion of ephyrae of total asexual reproduction (new buds + ephyrae) increased dramatically in warmer temperature and more light. Survival was reduced in the highest temperature. Strobilation did not occur in the lowest temperature in darkness. All measures of total asexual reproduction indicated that mid- to high temperatures would lead to faster production of more jellyfish. Continuous high temperatures might result in high polyp mortality. Light affected asexual reproduction less than did temperature, only significantly accelerating the strobilation rate. Because the interactive effects of light and temperature were significant for the time period polyps survived and the potential production of jellyfish polyp−1, combined light and temperature effects probably are important for strobilation in situ. 目的:探讨内镜下氩离子凝固术、高频电凝电切术及黏膜切除术治疗结肠息肉的疗效。方法:选取2016年1月~2018年5月期间我院收治的拟行内镜下治疗的结肠息肉患者180例(298枚息肉)为研究对象。根据不同的术式将患者分为内镜下氩离子凝固术组(n=59,96枚息肉,行内镜下氩离子凝固术)、高频电凝电切术组(n=61,103枚息肉,行高频电凝电切术)以及黏膜切除术组(n=60,99枚息肉,行黏膜切除术),比较三组患者围手术期指标以及临床疗效,并记录三组术后并发症发生情况。结果:三组患者术后住院时间、平均息肉个数整体及组间两两比较差异无统计学意义(P0.05);高频电凝电切术组手术时间显著短于内镜下氩离子凝固术组、黏膜切除术组(P0.05),内镜下氩离子凝固术组、黏膜切除术组手术时间比较差异无统计学意义(P0.05)。内镜下氩离子凝固术组、黏膜切除术组扁平及浅表隆起息肉的治愈率显著高于高频电凝电切术组(P0.05);高频电凝电切术组、黏膜切除术组亚蒂及有蒂隆起息肉的治愈率显著高于内镜下氩离子凝固术组(P0.05)。三组患者术后并发症发生率比较无差异(P0.05)。结论:对于亚蒂及有蒂隆起的结肠息肉患者,高频电凝电切术和黏膜切除术的治疗效果优于内镜下氩离子凝固术,而对于扁平及浅表隆起的结肠息肉患者,内镜下氩离子凝固术和黏膜切除术的治疗效果优于高频电凝电切术,临床可根据患者具体息肉情况选择合适的术式。  相似文献

Ways, mechanisms, and responses of ontogenetic adaptation of reef-building corals to light are discussed on the basis of original and literature data. The possible ways of photoacclimation of corals within the range of tolerance to light are shown: (1) adaptation to bright light (>70% incident photosynthetic active radiation, PARs), (2) adaptation to moderate shade (50–10% PARs), and (3) adaptation to extremely low light (<5% PARs). In each of the ways, general and specific mechanisms and reactions are involved in photoacclimation of corals. Adaptive changes take place in plant (zooxanthellae) and animal (polyps) components of the symbiotic organism. They involve morphology, physiology, and biochemistry of colonial polyps and their zooxanthellae. During changes of the light regime, some adaptive reactions last several months and others occur within a few days. Some physiological and biochemical alterations occur as early as the next day after the light regime changes. The wide range of light tolerance of corals and a great number of mechanisms and reactions of photoacclimation allowing corals to adapt to bright and low light with minimum losses in their metabolic activity give grounds to classify them as a single ecological group of light- and shade-tolerant organisms.  相似文献

Siphonophores are a group of pelagic colonial hydrozoans (Cnidaria) that have long been of general interest because of the division of labor between the polyps and medusae that make up these "superorganisms." These polyps and medusae are each homologous to free living animals but are generated by an incomplete asexual budding process that leaves them physiologically integrated. They are functionally specialized for different tasks and are precisely organized within each colony. The number of functional types of polyps and medusae varies across taxa, and different authors have used this character to construct phylogenies polarized in opposite directions, depending on whether they thought siphonophore evolution proceeded by a reduction or an increase in functional specialization. We have collected taxa across all major groups of siphonophores, many of which are found exclusively in the deep sea, using remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) and by SCUBA diving from ships in the open ocean. We have used 52 siphonophores and four outgroup taxa to estimate the siphonophore phylogeny with molecular data from the nuclear small subunit ribosomal RNA gene (18S) and the mitochondrial large subunit ribosomal RNA gene (16S). Parsimony reconstructions indicate that functionally specialized polyps and medusae have been gained and lost across the phylogeny. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses of morphological data suggest that the transition rate for decreased functional specialization is greater than the transition rate for increased functional specialization for three out of the four investigated categories of polyps and medusae. The present analysis also bears on several long-standing questions about siphonophore systematics. It indicates that the cystonects are sister to all other siphonophores, a group that we call the Codonophora. We also find that the Calycophorae are nested within the Physonectae, and that the Brachystelia, a historically recognized grouping of short-stemmed taxa, are polyphyletic. 目的:比较尼龙绳和钛夹在预防大肠宽蒂息肉切除后出血的疗效和安全性的比较.方法:从2005年1月至2011年9月连续选择155例患大肠宽蒂息肉和有蒂且顶部直径大于10mm息内的患者.随机分为3组.A组(53例),将尼龙绳套扎息肉的基底部,然后使用常规的套圈器进行息肉电切术.B组(52例),使用常规的套圈器进行息肉电切术,然后残端使用钛夹缝合.C组(50例),使用常规的套圈器进行息肉电切术.结果:所有息肉均成功摘除.A组和B组1例出血;C组5例出血,其中1例需要手术干预.结论:大肠宽蒂息肉常规圈套器进行息肉电切术具有较大的出血风险;尼龙绳和钛夹对内镜下切除大肠宽蒂息肉术后出血具有良好的预防作用.  相似文献

Abstract. Polyps of the tropical corallimorpharian Rhodactis rhodostoma segregate sexes between center and edge positions within aggregations produced by clonal replication. On a reef flat at Eilat, northern Red Sea, infertile polyps and males occur mainly along the edges of clonal aggregations, while females mostly occupy central positions within each aggregation. In addition, on the inner to middle reef flat where polyps of this species are abundant, aggregations consist mostly of females. On the outer reef flat, where polyps are rare, a sampled aggregation consisted mostly of males and infertile polyps. Male polyps are significantly smaller than females, and the smallest polyps are infertile. Fecundity increases significantly with polyp size in females, but testis size and number do not vary with body size in males. Oocytes are present in polyps during most of the year and gradually increase in size until annual spawning in June-July during the period of maximum day length. Testes do not vary significantly in size during the year and remain a small proportion of body mass (>8%). In contrast, females invest up to 30% of their body mass into gonads during the months immediately before spawning. The annual spawning of gametes coincides with a temporary drop in the frequency of clonal replication by polyps. We estimate that each female polyp of R. rhodostoma may release up to 3000 large eggs (500 μm in maximum diameter) each summer. The high investment of this corallimorpharian in sexual production of planktonic propagules may allow rapid dispersal to reef habitats distant from parent populations.  相似文献

In a mutant strain of Hydractinia (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa), the polyps develop ectopic supernumerary tentacles and heads (hypostomes) after an initial phase of wild-type growth. In order to elucidate the molecular mechanisms implicated in the development of aberrant phenotypes, we tried to enhance or suppress the expressivity of this hypomorphic mutation by exposing subclones to factors supposedly influencing pattern formation. Upon iterated treatment with alsterpaullone, an inhibitor of GSK-3, the formation of additional, ectopic head structures and the budding of new polyps were dramatically accelerated and enhanced. The endogenous stolon-inducing factor (SIF) had opposite effects by reducing head forming potential while increasing stolon-forming potential. SIF could be used to rescue extremely aberrant phenotypes. In these mutant colonies, long polyps with multiple heads eventually detach from stolons and lose the ability to regenerate stolons. Upon exposure to SIF, such free-floating multi-headed polyps resumed production of stolons and acquired wild-type morphology. We conclude that a canonical WNT signaling cascade is involved in patterning the body axis of polyps and in the initiation of budding, and that SIF counteracts this signaling system.  相似文献

Green Fluorescent Proteins (GFPs) have been reported from a wide diversity of medusae, but only a few observations of green fluorescence have been reported for hydroid colonies. In this study, we report on fluorescence displayed by hydroid polyps of the genus Cytaeis Eschscholtz, 1829 (Hydrozoa: Anthoathecata: Filifera) found at night time in the southern Red Sea (Saudi Arabia) living on shells of the gastropod Nassarius margaritifer (Dunker, 1847) (Neogastropoda: Buccinoidea: Nassariidae). We examined the fluorescence of these polyps and compare with previously reported data. Intensive green fluorescence with a spectral peak at 518 nm was detected in the hypostome of the Cytaeis polyps, unlike in previous reports that reported fluorescence either in the basal parts of polyps or in other locations on hydroid colonies. These results suggest that fluorescence may be widespread not only in medusae, but also in polyps, and also suggests that the patterns of fluorescence localization can vary in closely related species. The fluorescence of polyps may be potentially useful for field identification of cryptic species and study of geographical distributions of such hydroids and their hosts.  相似文献

目的:探讨结肠息肉镜下特征、病理类型及血清学特点与癌变的相关性。方法:收集我院2011年6月~2013年6月肠镜证实的640名结肠息肉患者资料。对年龄、性别、息肉特征(部位、大小、数量、分型、病理等)分析,并将息肉者癌胚抗原与健康人比较。结果:检出息肉1144枚;年龄在41岁~60岁的占52.9%;发生在乙状结肠和直肠的占47.3%;多发及多部位息肉比例为56.9%和46.9%;腺瘤样息肉占87%;随年龄、息肉体积增加,癌变率增加;无蒂息肉癌变率高于有蒂息肉;两组血清癌胚抗原值差异有统计学意义。结论:结肠息肉多发生在乙状结肠和直肠;以腺瘤息肉为主;癌变与年龄、腺瘤大小、形态、病理类型有关。癌胚抗原可能在腺瘤样息肉的筛查及监测癌变存在意义。  相似文献

The effect of intraspecific contact (Contact) on egg production was examined in the massive coral Goniastrea aspera in Okinawa, subtropical Japan. The contact was non-aggressive without damaging soft tissues each other. Within Contact colonies, polyp volume, polyp fertility (%polyps with gonad), and NE/PV (number of eggs per polyp volume) were significantly smaller in marginal (Mg) polyps without direct intraspecific contact than other polyps, but no difference was found between non-marginal and Mg-Contact (marginal with direct intraspecific contact) polyps. Comparisons of non-marginal polyps (non-marginal and Mg-Contact polyps were combined in Contact colonies) between Non-Contact and Contact colonies showed that fertility and NE/PV were significantly larger in Contact colonies than in Non-Contact colonies, but polyp volume were not different significantly. Further analyses dividing colonies at Non-Contact maturation colony size (60 polyps) revealed that fertility and NE/PV were significantly larger in Contact colonies than in Non-Contact colonies only in the small colonies (<60 polyps), indicating that the intraspecific contact promoted sexual maturation at smaller colony size; one polyped Contact coral was also reproductive. The lack of correlation between polyp volume and NE/PV in the small Contact colonies, and the similarity of NE/PV in non-marginal and Mg-Contact polyps within a colony, suggest that the maturation at smaller size in Contact colonies is realized by reproductive integration of polyps at the colony level. The present results show that size-structured populations such as colonial corals may show phenotypic diversity in key demographic parameters, such as reproductive output, dependent on ecological conditions.  相似文献

Objective: Colorectal adenomas are thought to be precursor lesions to colorectal cancer, a leading cause of cancer incidence and mortality in African‐American women. Studies suggest that obesity is associated with risk of adenomas in white women, but little is known about the relation in African‐American women. We prospectively examined the association between selected anthropometric factors and colorectal polyps in African‐American women. Methods and Procedures: Data were obtained from the Black Women's Health Study (BWHS), a prospective cohort study of African‐American women. From 1997 to 2003, we followed 33,403 women aged ≥30 years with no prior diagnosis of cancer or polyps. Cox regression was used to estimate incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for risk of polyps, with adjustment for potential confounders. Results: After 211,797 person‐years of follow‐up, 1,189 cases of colorectal polyps were reported. The IRR comparing women with a current BMI ≥35 to <25 kg/m2 was 1.35 (95% CI = 1.12–1.62), after adjustment for covariates including waist‐to‐hip ratio (WHR). Women who gained ≥30 kg since age 18 were 1.76 times as likely as those who gained <5 kg to report polyps (95% CI = 1.33–2.33). The IRR comparing the highest (≥0.87) to lowest (<0.71) quintiles of WHR was 1.26 (95% CI = 1.04–1.54), after adjustment for covariates including BMI. BMI at age 18, adult height, and waist circumference (BMI‐adjusted) were not materially associated with risk. Results were similar among women with a recent endoscopy. Discussion: Weight gain and obesity in adulthood may increase the risk of colorectal polyps in African‐American women.  相似文献

Background

Obesity increases the risk of colon cancer. It is also known that most colorectal cancers develop from adenomatous polyps. However, the effects of obesity and adipokines on colonic polyp formation are unknown.

Methods

To determine if BMI, waist circumference or adipokines are associated with colon polyps in males, 126 asymptomatic men (48–65 yr) were recruited at time of colonoscopy, and anthropometric measures as well as blood were collected. Odds ratios were determined using polytomous logistic regression for polyp number (0 or ≥3) and polyp type (no polyp, hyperplastic polyp, tubular adenoma).

Results

41% of the men in our study were obese (BMI ≥30). The odds of an obese individual having ≥3 polyps was 6.5 (CI: 1.3–33.0) times greater than those of a lean (BMI<25) individual. Additionally, relative to lean individuals, obese individuals were 7.8 (CI: 2.0–30.8) times more likely to have a tubular adenoma than no polyp. As BMI category increased, participants were 2.9 (CI: 1.5–5.4) times more likely to have a tubular adenoma than no polyps. Serum leptin, IP-10 and TNF-α were significantly associated with tubular adenoma presence. Serum leptin and IP-10 were significantly associated with increased likelihood of ≥3 polyps, and TNF-α showed a trend (p = 0.09).

Conclusions

Obese men are more likely to have at least three polyps and adenomas. This cross-sectional study provides evidence that colonoscopy should be recommended for obese, white males.  相似文献

 The natural diet and prey abundance of the benthic coral reef hydrozoan Nemalecium lighti, a common tropical species, were studied by analysing the gastrovascular contents of polyps. Prey capture was estimated from 10 samples collected at 3-h intervals during a single diel cycle (1–2 September, 1995) in the San Blas Islands (Panamá). Prey size ranged from 5 to 550 μm, with invertebrate larvae being the main contributor to the diet of the species. Prey items were found in 56–88% of the polyps over the entire diel cycle. Gastrovascular contents varied between 0.93 and 2.13 prey items per polyp. These capture incidences are among the highest reported for cnidarian species. Such rates would allow for high production rates for Nemalecium lighti, consistent with reports of the species’ fast growth and high reproduction rates. The observations suggest that some hydrozoans may be active heterotrophic components in coral reef ecosystems. Accepted: 3 January 1999  相似文献

Anthropogenic nutrient inputs enhance microbial respiration within many coastal ecosystems, driving concurrent hypoxia and acidification. During photosynthesis, Symbiodinium spp., the microalgal endosymbionts of cnidarians and other marine phyla, produce O2 and assimilate CO2 and thus potentially mitigate the exposure of the host to these stresses. However, such a role for Symbiodinium remains untested for noncalcifying cnidarians. We therefore contrasted the fitness of symbiotic and aposymbiotic polyps of a model host jellyfish (Cassiopea sp.) under reduced O2 (~2.09 mg/L) and pH (~ 7.63) scenarios in a full‐factorial experiment. Host fitness was characterized as asexual reproduction and their ability to regulate internal pH and Symbiodinium performance characterized by maximum photochemical efficiency, chla content and cell density. Acidification alone resulted in 58% more asexual reproduction of symbiotic polyps than aposymbiotic polyps (and enhanced Symbiodinium cell density) suggesting Cassiopea sp. fitness was enhanced by CO2‐stimulated Symbiodinium photosynthetic activity. Indeed, greater CO2 drawdown (elevated pH) was observed within host tissues of symbiotic polyps under acidification regardless of O2 conditions. Hypoxia alone produced 22% fewer polyps than ambient conditions regardless of acidification and symbiont status, suggesting Symbiodinium photosynthetic activity did not mitigate its effects. Combined hypoxia and acidification, however, produced similar numbers of symbiotic polyps compared with aposymbiotic kept under ambient conditions, demonstrating that the presence of Symbiodinium was key for mitigating the combined effects of hypoxia and acidification on asexual reproduction. We hypothesize that this mitigation occurred because of reduced photorespiration under elevated CO2 conditions where increased net O2 production ameliorates oxygen debt. We show that Symbiodinium play an important role in facilitating enhanced fitness of Cassiopea sp. polyps, and perhaps also other noncalcifying cnidarian hosts, to the ubiquitous effects of ocean acidification. Importantly we highlight that symbiotic, noncalcifying cnidarians may be particularly advantaged in productive coastal waters that are subject to simultaneous hypoxia and acidification.  相似文献

Liver kinase B1 (LKB1; also known as STK11) is a serine/threonine kinase and tumour suppressor that is mutated in Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS), a premalignant syndrome associated with the development of gastrointestinal polyps. Proglucagon-expressing enteroendocrine cells are involved in the control of glucose homeostasis and the regulation of appetite through the secretion of gut hormones such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and peptide tyrosine tyrosine (PYY). To determine the role of LKB1 in these cells, we bred mice bearing floxed alleles of Lkb1 against animals carrying Cre recombinase under proglucagon promoter control. These mice (GluLKB1KO) were viable and displayed near-normal growth rates and glucose homeostasis. However, they developed large polyps at the gastro-duodenal junction, and displayed premature mortality (death from 120 days of age). Histological analysis of the polyps demonstrated that they had a PJS-like appearance with an arborising smooth-muscle core. Circulating GLP-1 levels were normal in GluLKB1KO mice and the polyps expressed low levels of the peptide, similar to levels in the neighbouring duodenum. Lineage tracing using a Rosa26tdRFP transgene revealed, unexpectedly, that enterocytes within the polyps were derived from non-proglucagon-expressing precursors, whereas connective tissue was largely derived from proglucagon-expressing precursors. Developmental studies in wild-type mice suggested that a subpopulation of proglucagon-expressing cells undergo epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) to become smooth-muscle-like cells. Thus, it is likely that polyps in the GluLKB1KO mice developed from a unique population of smooth-muscle-like cells derived from a proglucagon-expressing precursor. Colonies of the massive stony coral Faviafavus were exposed to different flow speeds and levels of light, and to the addition of zooplankton prey. The relative importance of each factor in controlling polyp expansion behavior was tested. The coral polyps fully expanded when they were exposed to low light intensity (0-40 micromol m(-2) s(-1)) and high flow speed (15 cm s(-1)), regardless of prey presence. They also partially expanded under low and medium light (40-80 micromol m(-2) s(-1)) at medium flow speed (10 cm s(-1)). The corals expanded their polyps only when they were exposed to light levels below compensation irradiance (Icom: light level at which photosynthesis = respiration), which was determined to be about 107 +/- 24 micromol m(-2) s. The results presented here indicate that high flow, low light, and the presence of planktonic prey induce coral expansion. There is a hierarchy of response to these stimuli, in which light level and flow speed are dominant over prey presence. Coral response to these three factors is probably due to the relative importance of gas exchange and zooplankton prey.  相似文献
