Summary Divergent directional selection lines were initiated from base populations founded from parents taken from different parts of the sternopleural chaetae distribution in a cage population of Drosophila melanogaster. Lines founded from parents taken from the central part of the distribution showed greater response and higher realised heritability than lines derived from parents with extreme high or extreme low chaetae number. The results suggest that centrally derived phenotypes have higher heterozygosity for chaetae factors than extreme phenotypes and that these factors have a large effect on the character.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that the esterase 6 (EST6) enzyme ofD. melanogaster is mainly produced in the sperm ejaculatory duct of the adult male and comparisons of wild-type males with laboratory null mutants have suggested that the enzyme plays a role in reproductive fitness. In this study we have compared 18 field-derived lines each isoallelic forEst6 for differences in five components of male reproductive fitness. No consistent fitness differences were found among lines differing in respect of the two major allozyme classes EST6-F and EST6-S, despite other evidence that these two classes are not selectively equivalent in the field. However, differences in reproductive fitness were found among lines differing in the minor mobility variants that segregate within EST6-F and EST6-S. A failure to distinguish among these minor forms may explain the discrepancies in previous studies on the effects of the major EST6 allozymes on reproductive fitness. The most significant associations we have found between EST6 and reproductive fitness were due to variation in EST6 activity levels. Male EST6 activity levels were found to be positively correlated with their time to first mating, negatively correlated with the numbers of eggs laid and progeny produced by their mates, and negatively correlated with the frequency with which their mates remate. We conclude that some EST6 variants differ in components of male reproductive fitness operative in laboratory cultures. However, the evidence for fitness differences is stronger for variants affecting the amount, rather than the structure of the enzyme, and the direction of the differences varies between some of the fitness components tested.  相似文献

Both strong directional selection and faster development are thought to destabilize development, giving rise to greater fluctuating asymmetry (FA), although there is no strong empirical evidence supporting this assertion. We compared FA in sternopleural bristle number in four populations ofDrosophila melanogaster successfully selected for faster development from egg to adult, and in four control populations. The fraction of perfectly symmetric individuals was higher in the selected populations, whereas the FA levels did not differ significantly between selected and control populations, clearly indicating that directional selection for faster development has not led to increased FA in sternopleural bristle number in these populations. This may be because: (i) development time and FA are uncorrelated, (ii) faster development does result in FA, but selection has favoured developmentally stable individuals that can develop fast and still be symmetrical, or (iii) the increased fraction of symmetric individuals in the selected populations is an artifact of reduced body size. Although we cannot discriminate among these explanations, our results suggest that the relationship between development time, FA and fitness may be far more subtle than often thought.  相似文献

Summary A test of the linearity of the offspring-midparent regression for total sternopleural bristle number showed significant departure from linearity, with a tendency for higher heritability at higher values of the character. Offspring-midparent regression coefficients for each of four subdivisions of the total range of bristle number were not significantly different. The nonlinearity of offspring-midparent regression detected in this study may be due to either chance effects, genotypic asymmetry of genes with large effect, distribution asymmetry, or a combination of these factors. Further work is required to determine the extent and causes of nonlinearity of offspring-parent regression.  相似文献

We investigated the phenotypic plasticity of sternopleural bristle (SB) number as a function of growth temperature in isofemale lines from temperate (France) and tropical (Congo) populations of Drosophila melanogaster. We found concave reaction norms with a maximum in the middle of the thermal range, except in four African lines which exhibited a regularly decreasing response curve. Genetic variability (intraclass correlation) and evolvability (genetic CV, coefficient of variation) were independent properties and did not change with temperature. Residual, within-line variability was, however, strongly influenced by growth temperature, showing a U-shaped response curve and a minimum CV of 9% at 21.5 degrees C. As expected from a previously known latitudinal cline, maximum values (MV) were higher in temperate than in tropical flies. The temperature of maximum value (TMV) was observed at a higher temperature in the tropical population, in agreement with similar adaptive trends already observed for other quantitative traits. Significant negative correlations within each population were observed between a plasticity curvature parameter and MV or TMV. No difference in curvature was, however, observed between populations, in spite of their very different MVs.  相似文献

The phenotypic plasticity of abdominal bristle number (segments 3 and 4 in females) was investigated in 10 isofemale lines from a French population, grown at 7 constant temperatures, ranging from 12‡ to 31‡C. Overall concave reaction norms were obtained with a maximum around 20‡-21‡C. Intraclass correlation (isofemale line heritability) was not affected by temperature. Correlations between segments 3 and 4 strongly contrasted a low within-line phenotypic correlation (r = 0.39 ± 0.04) and a high, between-line genetic correlation (r = 0.89 ± 0.03). A significant decrease of the genetic correlation was observed when comparing more different temperatures. Finally, among 7 other morphometrical traits which were measured on the same set of lines, 3 provided a significant positive genetic correlation with abdominal bristles: thoracic bristles, abdomen pigmentation and thoracic pigmentation.  相似文献

Summary We have already shown that theachaetae-scute complex (AS-C) ofDrosophila is regulated by two genes, hairy andextramacrochaetae. Using mutants in these genes, we have analysed how different levels of expression of AS-C affect the pattern of chaetae. The results indicate that the spatial distribution of chaetae results from cell interactions, probably by a mechanism of lateral inhibition. The results are discussed in view of the different theories of pattern formation.  相似文献

We have mapped quantitative trait loci (QTL) harboring naturally occurring allelic variation for Drosophila bristle number. Lines with high (H) and low (L) sternopleural bristle number were derived by artificial selection from a large base population. Isogenic H and L sublines were extracted from the selection lines, and populations of X and third chromosome H/L recombinant isogenic lines were constructed in the homozygous low line background. The polymorphic cytological locations of roo transposable elements provided a dense molecular marker map with an average intermarker distance of 4.5 cM. Two X chromosome and six chromosome 3 QTL affecting response to selection for sternopleural bristle number and three X chromosome and three chromosome 3 QTL affecting correlated response in abdominal bristle number were detected using a composite interval mapping method. The average effects of bristle number QTL were moderately large, and some had sex-specific effects. Epistasis between QTL affecting sternopleural bristle number was common, and interaction effects were large. Many of the intervals containing bristle number QTL coincided with those mapped in previous studies. However, resolution of bristle number QTL to the level of genetic loci is not trivial, because the genomic regions containing bristle number QTL often did not contain obvious candidate loci, and results of quantitative complementation tests to mutations at candidate loci affecting adult bristle number were ambiguous.  相似文献

In several independent selection lines, derived from a stockCy/Kr, after many generations of moderate inbreeding aberrant sex-ratios turned up, with males in excess of females. A stock was established which had a mean ratio, at 25°C, of 5.8: 1. This ratio was temperature-dependent, increasing at a higher temperature and shifting towards normal at lower temperatures.By substitution of chromosomes stocks have been obtained which had different, less strongly aberrant sex-ratios. These ratios were fairly characteristic for a given chromosome substitution. The sex-ratio condition reported here appears to be due to genes located on the three major chromosomes. There are indications of a maternal effect.  相似文献

The effect of stressful (31 degrees C) and nonstressful (25 degrees C) growth temperatures on quantitative variation and developmental stability (fluctuating asymmetry) of Drosophila melanogaster was examined in a short-term selection experiment on sternopleural bristle number. Realized heritabilities based on 10 generations of selection in an upward direction did not differ between the two temperature regimes, which indicated that additive genetic variation was not affected by a high, stressful temperature. Phenotypic variability and fluctuating asymmetry of sternopleural bristles were significantly higher under stressful conditions when averaged over generations, although most pairwise comparisons in separate generations showed nonsignificant differences between temperatures.  相似文献

Summary Effects on abdominal bristle number were determined for three mutations,scabrous-like, dark hairy margin andscabrous, and for some second chromosome recessive lethal genes prevalent in various irradiated and unirradiated selection lines derived from an outbred population. The relationship between the effect of a lethal gene on a quantitative character and the equilibrium frequency of the lethal in a line selected for that character was examined.  相似文献

Summary Drosophila melanogaster normally have six thoracic legs and no abdominal legs. However, one or two legs often appear in the first abdominal segment ofbithoraxoid mutants. The extent to which these extra legs develop is determined both by thecis-regulatory action ofbithoraxoid lesions onUltrabithorax and by the number of copies of the adjacent homeotic geneabdominal-A. Thebithoraxoid region does notcis-regulateabdominal-A.  相似文献

Summary Drosophila melanogaster can be conditioned to avoid an odorant selectively after being shocked in its presence (Quinn et al., 1974). In the following study learning and memory properties of the flies are reported. The major part of the conditioned behavior is acquired after a single training trial (Fig. 2). Similar degrees of learning are obtained by using various odorants in various combinations (Table 1). The flies can learn to avoid selectively several odorants at a time, can learn to discriminate between different concentrations of the same odorant (Fig. 4), and can also learn to distinguish a mixture of odorants from its components. If not extinguished, the selective avoidance decays slowly and can be detected for hours, its magnitude depending upon the intensity of training (Fig. 6). Memory can be disrupted by narcosis during the first 20 min after training, but not afterwards (Fig. 7). A study of learning properties of wild-type strains and various morphological and behavioral mutants reveals differences in performance (Table 2). However, the differences cannot be attributed with certainty to differences in learning and memory, per se, because the mutants differ in other aspects of behavior, e.g., locomotor activity and phototaxis. Of the wild-type strains tested, Canton-S performed the best.I thank Dr. S. Benzer for the hospitality of his laboratory, and S. Benzer, D. Byers, W. Harris, L. Jan, Y.-N. Jan, W. Quinn, D. Summary The influence of muscle development on thorax morphogenesis has been investigated inDrosophila melanogaster. The development of an indirect flight muscle, the dorsal longitudinal muscle (DLM), has been thought to be responsible for the formation of the distinct thoracic curvature. Using aDrosophila mutant (sr/Df(3)sr) in which the DLM is completely missing, we have shown that a normally curved thorax still is produced. Such results indicate that an external structure (epidermis) is capable of developing wholly independent of an absent internal structure (muscle).  相似文献

During gametogenesis, chromosomes may become imprinted with information which facilitates proper expression of the DNA in offspring. We have used a position effect variegation mutant as a reporter system to investigate the possibility of imprinting inDrosophila melanogaster. Genetic crosses were performed in which the variegating gene and a strong modifier of variegation were present either within the same parental genome or in opposite parental genomes in all possible combinations. Our results indicate that the presence of the variegating chromosome and a modifier chromosome in the same parental genome can alter the amount of variegation formed in progeny. The genomic imprinting we observed is not determined by the parental origin of the variegating chromosome but is instead determined by the genetic background the variegating chromosome is subjected to during gametogenesis.  相似文献
