This review highlights a number of reasons why insect diapause merits attention. Knowledge of diapause is essential for understanding the seasonal biology of an insect species, and such information is also required for the development of effective pest management strategies; manipulating domesticated species used in pollination and silk production; developing accurate predictive models used to forecast periods of pest abundance; and increasing the shelf‐life of parasitoids and predatory mites used in the biological control industry. Mechanisms used by diapausing insects to survive low temperature may provide tips for cryopreserving insect stocks, a vital need within the research community. Diapause also presents an interesting model for probing fundamental questions in development, and we are indebted to diapause studies for early insights into insect hormones. In addition, I argue that insect diapause may provide insights into questions on aging, obesity and disease transmission, and diapausing insects offer a potentially rich source of pharmaceutical agents that may contribute to improvement of human health.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to explore combined effects of four candidate susceptibility genes and two exposures on Parkinson’s disease (PD) risk; namely, α-synuclein (SNCA) promoter polymorphism REP1, microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT) H1/H2 haplotypes, apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε2/ε3/ε4 polymorphism, ubiquitin carboxy-terminal esterase L1 (UCHL1) S18Y variant, cigarette smoking and caffeinated coffee consumption. 932 PD patients and 664 control subjects from the NeuroGenetics Research Consortium, with complete data on all six factors, were studied. Uniform protocols were used for diagnosis, recruitment, data collection and genotyping. A logistic regression model which included gene-exposure interactions was applied. Likelihood ratio tests (LRTs) were used for significance testing and Bayesian inference was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs). MAPT (P = 0.007), SNCA REP1 (P = 0.012), smoking (P = 0.001), and coffee (P = 0.011) were associated with PD risk. Two novel interactions were detected: APOE with coffee (P = 0.005), and REP1 with smoking (P = 0.021). While the individual main effects were modest, each yielding OR < 1.6, the effects were cumulative, with some combinations reaching OR = 12.6 (95% CI: 5.9–26.8). This study provides evidence for the long-held notion that PD risk is modulated by cumulative and interactive effects of genes and exposures. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that while interaction studies are useful for exploring risk relationships that might otherwise go undetected, results should be interpreted with caution because of the inherent loss of power due to multiple testing. The novel findings of this study that warrant replication are the evidence for interaction of coffee with APOE, and of smoking with REP1 on PD risk. Calculations contrasting the channel solvation energy for cesium ions and chloride ions associated with water in gramicidin-like channels are presented. The energy profile for the cation exhibits a deep well at the channel entrance; within the single file region the solvation energy is roughly constant. The anion exhibits a totally different energy profile. There is an energy barrier at the channel entrance; if the ion could surmount this barrier, it would be quite stable within the channel. At the channel entrance, the calculated solvation energy difference between anion and cation is approximately 15 kcal mol-1. This is completely consistent with the observation that chloride neither permeates nor blocks the channel since the estimated rate of ion entry would be approximately 0.01-10(-5) s-1, far slower than the rate at which the channel dimer dissociates into monomers.  相似文献

Why are Dormice rare? A case study in conservation biology   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
In the last 100 years, the Dormouse Muscardinus avellcmarius has disappeared from about half its geographical range in Britain. Evidence is presented which indicates that declining range and numbers are due to a complex interplay of factors which include fragmentation, deterioration and loss of specialized habitat. The Dormouse is unusual in being a relatively A-selected small mammal, with exacting ecological requirements which render it very vulnerable, particularly to habitat fragmentation. The Dormouse is also sensitive to climate, both directly and probably indirectly through the effects of weather on the timing and abundance of food (insects, flowers and fruits). Combined with low population density and low intrinsic rate of population increase, this makes the Dormouse highly vulnerable, not just to absolute climatic measures (e.g. temperature, rainfall), but especially to climatic stochasticity, particularly at the edge of its range. There are strong associations between the distribution and changing status of the Dormouse and various climatic parameters, and clear parallels with other climate-sensitive taxa, notably bats and butterflies.
The Dormouse is a very specialized species, highly sensitive to environmental change, resulting in its piecemeal, progressive extinction, particularly in northern counties. It is likely to be a very sensitive indicator species for monitoring future changing environments and an excellent model for studying the effects of habitat fragmentation, climatic shifts and climatic stochasticity.  相似文献

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that as many as 80% of the world's more than six billion people rely primarily on animal and plant-based medicines. The healing of human ailments by using therapeutics based on medicines obtained from animals or ultimately derived from them is known as zootherapy. The phenomenon of zootherapy is marked both by a broad geographical distribution and very deep historical origins. Despite their importance, studies on the therapeutic use of animals and animal parts have been neglected, when compared to plants. This paper discusses some related aspects of the use of animals or parts thereof as medicines, and their implications for ecology, culture (the traditional knowledge), economy, and public health.  相似文献

Why weight?     
Whether phylogenetic data should be differentially or equally weighted is currently debated. Further, if differential weighting is to be explored, there is no consensus among investigators as to which weighting scheme is most appropriate. Mitochondrial genome data offer a powerful tool in assessment of differential weighting schemes because taxa can be selected from which a highly corroborated phylogeny is available (so that accuracy can be assessed), and it can be assumed that different data partitions share the same history (so that gene-sorting issues are not so problematic). Using mitochondrial data from 17 mammalian genomes, we evaluated the most commonly used weighting schemes, such as successive weighting, transversion weighting, codon-based weighting, and amino acid coding, and compared them to more complex weighting schemes including a 6-parameter weighting, pseudoreplicate reweighting, and tri-level weighting. We found that the most commonly used weighting schemes perform the worst with these data. Some of the more complex schemes perform well, however, none of them is consistently superior. These results support ones biases; if one has a predilection to avoid differential weighting, these data support equally weighted parsimony and maximum likelihood. Others might be encouraged by these results to try weighting as a form of data exploration.  相似文献

Whatever the functions of sleep are, they probably shift in emphasis across the animal kingdom. There are fundamental differences between rodents and us. It is now more than 80 years since boron was convincingly demonstrated to be essential for normal growth of higher plants. However, its biochemical role is not well understood at the moment. Several recent reviews propose that B is implicated in three main processes: keeping cell wall structure, maintaining membrane function, and supporting metabolic activities. However, in the absence of conclusive evidence, the primary role of boron in plants remains elusive. Besides plants, growth of specific bacteria, such as heterocystous cyanobacteria and the recently reported actinomycetes of the genus Frankia, requires B, particularly for the stability of the envelopes that control the access of the nitrogenase-poisoning oxygen when they grow under N2-fixing conditions. Likewise, a role for B for animal embryogenesis and other developmental processes is being established. Finally, a new feature of the role of boron comes from signaling mechanisms for communication among bacteria and among legumes and rhizobia leading to N2-fixing symbiosis, and it is possible that new roles for B, based on its special chemistry and its interaction with Ca would appear in the world of signal transduction pathways. In conclusion, the diversity of roles played by B might indicate that either the micronutrient is involved in numerous processes or that its deficiency has a pleiotropic effect. The arising question is why such an element? Since all of the roles clearly established for B are related to its capacity to form diester bridges between cis-hydroxyl-containing molecules, we propose that the main reason for B essentiality is the stabilization of molecules with cis-diol groups turning them effective, irrespectively of their function.  相似文献

Animals as well as plants defend themselves against invading pathogenic microorganisms utilizing cationic antimicrobial peptides, which rapidly kill various microbes without exerting toxicity against the host. Physicochemical peptide-lipid interactions provide attractive mechanisms for innate immunity. Many of these peptides form cationic amphipathic secondary structures, typically alpha-helices and beta-sheets, which can selectively interact with anionic bacterial membranes by the aid of electrostatic interactions. Rapid, peptide-induced membrane permeabilization is an effective mechanism of antimicrobial action. This review article summarizes interactions with lipid bilayers of magainins (alpha-helix) and tachyplesins (beta-sheet) discovered in frog skin and horseshoe crab hemolymph, respectively, as archetypes, emphasizing that the mode of interaction is strongly dependent on the physicochemical properties not only of the peptide, but also of the target membrane.  相似文献

Crows have successfully colonized many cities, and urban zoos have been important in this process. To evaluate why zoos attract crows, we quantified crow numbers and behavior in three zoos in Europe (Debrecen, Edinburgh, Vienna) and one in Asia (Sapporo). Data were collected in 445 surveys over 297 days in summer 2014 and winter 2014–2015. We found that crow numbers were highest in Vienna, intermediate in Debrecen and Edinburgh and lowest in Sapporo, increased significantly from summer to winter (Debrecen, Edinburgh, Vienna), and from mornings to afternoons (Debrecen, Sapporo, Vienna), and were higher in sunny weather than in cloudy weather with precipitation and when visitor numbers were low (Debrecen, Vienna). The crows' use of natural food was highest in Vienna, intermediate in Edinburgh and Sapporo, and low in Debrecen. The use of anthropogenic food was high in Debrecen and Sapporo, where the availability of open grassy areas typically used by crows for natural foraging was low. In Sapporo, food availability was more limited than in other zoos, resulting in strong territoriality and few crows in summer, which decreased further in winter. Our study indicates that crows are primarily attracted to zoos by food availability and secondarily by breeding opportunities and that the relative importance of natural versus anthropogenic food sources may vary with zoo habitat structure. Our study draws attention to a previously overlooked role of zoos in urban biodiversity conservation. It may also provide useful information for the management of crow populations, if necessary, and for the planning of urban areas.  相似文献
