Three species of microalgae, the freshwater Euglena gracilis and themarine Dunaliella salina and Tetraselmis suecica, were fed tothe brine shrimp Artemia salina in order to compare their suitabilityin terms of fatty acid enrichment, and their effect on the biometric parametersof the zooplankter. The fatty acid content and composition were analyzed for the post-larval and pre-adult stages of Artemia fed the algae and theresults compared to the initial content of unfed 24-hour post-hatch nauplii.Differences in the total fatty acid content occurred between the three stages, the fatty acid profile being determined by the composition of the diet. A decreasing trend for almost all the individual fatty acids occurred throughdevelopment from post-larva to pre-adult with each of the three algal diets.Biometrical differences between Artemia fed the marine algae and that fed Euglena were not consistent in the post-larval stage, but became considerable in the pre-adult stage. Artemia fed with Euglena achieved twice the weight of animals fed the marine algae and showed thehighest length. The implications for the use of on-grown Artemia as afeed in larviculture of marine and freshwater fish and crustaceans are considered.  相似文献

Marsh vegetation plays an important role in trophic ecology of estuaries. Once broken down to detritus, it is an important food source for manyorganisms. In Atlantic Coast marshes, the reed Phragmites australis hasbeen invading many areas once dominated by smooth cordgrass, Spartina alterniflora. In this study we evaluated the growth of and trophictransfer of metals to estuarine invertebrates when fed diets of detritus fromthese different plant species. Decaying leaves from populations of Phragmites, natural Spartina, and restored Spartina from boththe Hackensack Meadowlands, New Jersey, and the more pristineAccabonac Harbor of East Hampton, New York, were collected from themarsh surface in the spring. Decaying leaves were pureed and fed to thefiddler crabs Uca pugnax and U. pugilator, and to the grassshrimp Palaemonetes pugio. In fiddler crabs we monitored limbregeneration, molting and weight. U. pugilator regenerated limbs andmolted equally well on all six diets. Most of the U. pugnax arrestedgrowth midway through regeneration on all 6 diets. A repeat experimentwith smaller crabs, which did complete the process, found no consistentdifferences among the six diets and control food, although control food andPhragmites detritus had higher N concentrations than the Spartinadetritus. Grass shrimp fed all six diets did not survive beyond 3 weeks. Inanother experiment using HM sediments from each vegetation type(containing detritus, meiofauna, and microflora), survival was equally highamong treatments and the shrimp fed sediments from the restored Spartina site or control food grew better than those fed sediments fromthe Phragmites or natural Spartina sites. Although metalconcentrations in detritus varied between sites and plant species, the crabsof each group did not differ in metal concentrations after the feedingexperiment. Our data do not support the general assumption that Phragmites leaf detritus is of poorer nutritional quality than Spartinaalterniflora leaf detritus to estuarine consumers.  相似文献

I examined plasticity of jaw and skull morphology induced by feeding different diets in two species of the neotropical cichlid genus Geophagus. The two species possess different modes of development, which affect the size at which young begin feeding. I hypothesized that the difference in size at first feeding could lead to a difference in the amount of change inducible in the two species. The young of the substrate-spawning species, G. brasiliensis, which begin feeding at a smaller size, were predicted to be more plastic than those of the mouthbrooding species, G. steindachneri. The two diets used to induce differences were brine shrimp nauplii and chironomid larvae. Numerous measures of the jaw and skull differed significantly between groups fed the two diets but the amount of plasticity induced was small and would not present a problem for taxonomists. Contrary to my prediction, both the magnitude and pattern of plasticity induced in the two species was similar. Thus, mode of parental care and the size at which young begin feeding do not affect the degree of plasticity. Fish fed brine shrimp nauplii were longer in oral jaw region, but were shorter and shallower in the area behind the oral jaws. An additional group of G. brasiliensis was fed flake food to compare the results of this study to other studies. The differences in measures between fish fed brine shrimp diets and flake food diets were greater than those between fish fed brine shrimp and chironomid larvae. A possible role of plasticity for enhancing rather than retarding morphological evolution is discussed.  相似文献

Are crustaceans linked to the ciguatera food chain?   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Synopsis Adult brine shrimp, Artemia spp., were used as an experimental organism to elucidate the role that crustacea may play in the transference of ciguatera toxins. Some ciguatera-implicated dinoflagellates were highly toxic to brine shrimp that had consumed them. Four clones of Gambierdiscus toxicus were fed in four trials at rates ranging from 2 to 480 cells per adult brine shrimp; the 24 h LD50 for the four clones were 2.8, 33.4, 41.1, and 104.5 cells per brine shrimp. Dinoflagellates Prorocentrum concavum and P. lima were also fed to adult brine shrimp, but minimal mortalities occurred at cell concentrations ranging up to 1000 cells per test animal. Tilapine cichlid (Oreochromis niloticus ×O. mossambicus) young fed brine shrimp containing G. toxicus cells displayed behavioral abnormalities ranging from spiral swimming to loss of equilibrium. The present data suggest that toxins accumulated by dinoflagellate-consuming crustaceans could produce toxicity in zooplanktivorous fish species, or to detritivores in cases where dinoflagellate consumption resulted in crustacean mortalities. Field studies of the ciguatera food chain should be expanded to include examination of crustacean diets to more fully define their role in toxin transfer.  相似文献

The developmental time and survival to eclosion of Anopheles hermsi Barr & Guptavanij fed monotypic and mixed diets of ten food types were examined in laboratory studies. Larvae fed monotypic diets containing animal detritus (freeze‐dried rotifers, freeze‐dried Daphnia pulicaria, and TetraMin® fish food flakes) and the mixotrophic protistan Cryptomonas ovata developed faster and survived better than larvae that were fed other monotypic diets. Survival to adulthood of larvae fed several concentrations of the diatom Planothidium (=Achnanthes) lanceolatum was poor (<13%) and larval development time was approximately twice that of larvae fed TetraMin® fish food flakes, the standard laboratory diet. Larvae fed monotypic diets containing prokaryotes (bacteria [Bacillus cereus] and cyanobacteria [Oscillatoria prolifera]) and brewer's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) failed to survive beyond the 1st and 2nd instar, respectively. Larvae fed only chlorophytes, single‐celled Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and filamentous Spirogyra communis, failed to complete larval development, regardless of the concentration tested. Cohorts fed a combination of food types (mixed diets) usually developed better than cohorts fed monotypic diets. Food types that failed to support complete development when fed alone often facilitated development to adulthood when fed in combination with food types containing >1% C20 polyunsaturated fatty acids as total fat, but regardless of essential fatty acid content, algae that produced mucilage and filaments that sank out of the feeding zone were poor quality diets.  相似文献

The suitability of cysts of the brine shrimp Artemia sp. as a factitious food for the predator Macrolophus pygmaeus Rambur was investigated. The influence of decapsulation time and hydration of the cysts on the performance of the predator were studied in the absence of plant material. A longer time of decapsulation had a positive influence on the development of the predator. Hydration of cysts had a significant impact on nymphal survival when cysts where non‐decapsulated or poorly decapsulated. An experiment in which nymphs were switched from a diet of hydrated cysts to non‐hydrated cysts showed that in the absence of plant material the relative importance of hydrating the cysts decreased with nymphal age. Especially, the first instar and to a lesser extent the second instar appear to be susceptible to water shortage. Effects of prolonged rearing on development and reproduction on brine shrimp cysts from different origins were tested in the presence of plant material. Rearing M. pygmaeus on Artemia sp. (Jingyu Lake) cysts yielded similar survival, development, adult weight and fecundity in the fourth as in the second generation. In contrast, for Artemia franciscana cysts, an increase in nymphal development was notable. Biochemical analyses showed that total amino acid content and the concentration of the different amino acids did not differ among diets and generations. There were, however, differences in total fatty acid content between the different diets and generations and in the concentration of certain fatty acids, indicating that insects fed brine shrimp cysts may show nutritional deficiencies compared to those reared on a diet of Ephestia kuehniella eggs. Our results indicate that decapsulated brine shrimp cysts are an economically viable alternative food source in at least part of the rearing process for M. pygmaeus.  相似文献

The mirid bug Macrolophus caliginosus is commercially reared on eggs of Ephestia kuehniella, constituting an effective but expensive factitious food. Artificial diets can decrease the rearing costs of this natural enemy, but developing and evaluating an artificial diet is a very time-consuming activity. In the current study, development and reproduction of M. caliginosus on two artificial diets based on egg yolk were investigated. The artificial diets resulted in longer development and lower adult weights, but survival was comparable with that of control insects fed E. kuehniella eggs. Reproductive potential of the predator reared on factitious and artificial foods was assessed using a dissection method. The influence of nymphal food on fecundity was less important than that of adult food. Adults fed E. kuehniella eggs had a preoviposition period of about 4 days, whereas adults offered only plant material started laying eggs about 7 days after emergence. Ovarian scores at day 7 were higher for females fed E. kuehniella eggs than for those given access only to a tobacco leaf. Ovarian scores were not significantly affected by mating status. In a final test, a parallel comparison of two methods for assessing reproductive response to diet was made. Here, adult couples were offered one of four diets: E. kuehniella eggs, one of two artificial diets or no food. Half of the females were dissected and the other half was held for determining lifetime oviposition. Females fed E. kuehniella eggs had superior ovarian scores and laid more eggs than those fed either artificial diet or those given no extra food. A good correlation (r = 0.97) was obtained between ovarian scores and oviposition data, indicating that dissecting females after 1 week provides a reliable estimate of fecundity as affected by diet quality. Rapid reproductive assessments as used in the current study will help to increase the rate of development of artificial diets and may contribute to more cost effective production methods for augmentative biological control agents.  相似文献

The total haemocyte count (THC), phenoloxidase activity, and respiratory burst were examined when white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei were immersed in seawater (34 per thousand) containing hot-water extract of red alga Gelidium amansii at 200, 400 and 600 mg l(-1), injected with hot-water extract at 4 and 6 microg g(-1) shrimp, and fed diets containing hot-water extract at 0, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 g kg(-1). These parameters increased significantly when shrimp were immersed in seawater containing hot-water extract at 400 and 600 mg l(-1) after 1h, when shrimp were injected with hot-water extract at 6 microg g(-1) shrimp after one day, and when shrimp were fed diets containing hot-water extract at 1.0 and 2.0 g kg(-1) after 14 days. Phagocytic activity and clearance efficiency were significantly higher for the shrimp that were fed diets containing hot-water extract at 1.0 and 2.0 g kg(-1) than those of shrimp that were fed diets containing hot-water extract at 0 and 0.5 g kg(-1) after 14 and 28 days. In a separate experiment, L. vannamei which had received hot-water extract via injection, or fed diets containing hot-water extract, were challenged after 3h or 28 days with V. alginolyticus at 2 x 10(6) cfu shrimp(-1) and 1 x 10(6) cfu shrimp(-1), respectively, and then placed in seawater. The survival of shrimp that were injected with hot-water extract at 6 microg g(-1) was significantly higher than that of control shrimp after 1 day, and the survival of shrimp fed diets containing hot-water extract at 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 g kg(-1) increased significantly after 3 days as well as at the end of the experiment (6 days after the challenge), respectively. It was concluded that L. vannamei that were immersed in hot-water extract at 400 mg l(-1), injected with hot-water extract at 6 microg g(-1) shrimp, and fed hot-water extract of G. amansii at 2.0 g kg(-1) or less showed increased immune ability as well as resistance to V. alginolyticus infection.  相似文献

A feeding experiment was carried out with deep-water shrimp (Pandalus borealis), a common benthic inhabitant of Norwegian fjords. Shrimp were reared in tanks for three months, fed either salmon feed or cod, and the fatty acid profile of their muscle tissue was monitored. The salmon feed pellets and cod had completely different fatty acid compositions, with significant differences in most of the analysed fatty acids, eight of them, 14:0, iso16:0, 16:1n7, 16:2n11, 18:3n3, 20:0, 22:0 and 22:1n11, differing between the two diets by a factor of 10 or more. The levels of the fatty acids in the diets differed also substantially from the levels in the shrimp tissue at the start of the experiment. The shrimp were fed ad libitum and both groups increased significantly in total fatty acid content in the course of the experiment. Nevertheless, the fatty acids made up no more than 6.5 mg g− 1 muscle tissue, with 88 ± 1% of them bound in polar, membrane lipids. Their composition in the tissue did also change to a certain extent, but the resulting tissue composition did not reflect the fatty acid composition of the diets. Only two fatty acids, 18:2n6 and 18:3n3, clearly followed the dietary level. They are abundant in commercial salmon feed since they are rich in plant oils used as additives to the commercial feed. Determination of fatty acid levels in shrimp tissue may enable shrimp to be used as indicator organisms for the influence of organic fish-farm waste on the food web in adjacent areas.  相似文献

Changes in fatty acid patterns, digestive and metabolic enzyme activities and egg production rates (EPR) were studied in the small calanoid copepod Temora longicornis. Female copepods were collected in spring 2005 off Helgoland (North Sea). In the laboratory one group of copepods was fed with the cryptophycean Rhodomonas baltica for a period of 3 days. Another group of copepods was maintained without food. According to the fatty acid patterns, animals from the field were feeding on a more detrital, animal-based and to a minor extent to a diatom-based diet. Under laboratory conditions, females rapidly accumulated fatty acids such as 18:4 (n-3), 18:3 (n-3) and 18:2 (n-6) which are specific of R. baltica. Diatom-specific fatty acids such as 16:1 (n-7) were strongly reduced. In fed animals the activities of digestive and metabolic enzymes remained constant and egg production rates were highest on day 2. Starving animals, in contrast, showed significantly reduced faecal pellet production and EPR. Proteolytic enzyme activity decreased rapidly within 24 h and remained at a low level until the end of the experiment. Citrate synthase decreased continuously as well. T. longicornis rapidly reacts to dietary changes and food depletion. It has limited energy stores and, thus, strongly depends on continuous food supply.  相似文献

The role of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on the fatty acid composition of juvenile red drum Sciaenops ocellatus was investigated. Individuals (n = 435) were fed three natural diets (Gulf menhaden Brevoortia patronus, brown shrimp Farfantapenaeus aztecus and Atlantic brief squid Lolliguncula brevis) that had significantly different proximate composition, energy density and PUFA compositions for 40 days. Diets were characterized as containing: high lipid, high protein, high energy and low PUFA (fish‐based), low lipid, low protein, low energy, moderate PUFA (shrimp‐based), and low lipid, high protein, moderate energy and high PUFA levels (squid‐based), respectively. Specimens were collected at days 0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 to evaluate rate of dietary fatty acid composition in tissues. Two‐source mixing models were used to calculate dietary fatty acid accumulation in consumer tissues. Results indicated that juvenile red drum incorporated an average of 35% dietary PUFAs after 5 days. Although relative biomass and dietary proximate composition had an effect upon the dietary fatty acid contribution, red drum averaged 91% incorporation of the five most prevalent PUFAs [18 : 2 (n ? 6), 20 : 4 (n ? 6), 20 : 5 (n ? 3), 22 : 5 (n ? 3) and 22 : 6 (n ? 3)] across all diets after 40 days. Growth varied as a function of diet and rates were higher for individuals fed the squid diet than those fed shrimp or fish diets primarily due to increased levels of protein and PUFAs [including 22 : 6 (n ? 3); 25·8%] in the diet. Red drum fed squid exhibited the greatest increase in average dietary fatty acid contribution by day 5, a trend that continued for the duration of the experiment. Since PUFA composition in red drum was significantly influenced by diet in as few as 5 days and almost completely incorporated into body tissues after 40 days, results from this study support the premise that fatty acids (especially PUFAs) are promising dietary indicators and may be useful for future studies examining trophic relationships of estuarine and marine fishes.  相似文献

Rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis), maintained on baker's yeast, were fed for 24h upon two algal diets, Isochrysis galbana (diet A) and Isochrysis galbana + Nannochloropsis gaditana (diet B). (These algal diets were selected for their potential use as essential fatty acid (EFA) boosters, taking into account the requirements of fish larvae). The effect of these algal diets on total lipid content, lipid classes and fatty acid composition was studied. The total lipid content increased after feeding upon both diets but no significant differences were found between the two types. Neutral lipid and polar lipid contents increased and a positive correlation was observed between the neutral lipids content of rotifers and that of the food supplied. However, the content of polar lipids in rotifers did not depend upon that of the diet. The increase in neutral lipid content was found to be higher in rotifers fed upon diet B, compared to diet A which increased the phospholipid content. Non-enriched rotifers contained only small amounts of polyenoic fatty acids, i.e. 18:3n-6, 18:3n-3, 20:4n-6, 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3, the contents of which increased significantly by feeding both diets. The EFA composition (20:4n-6, 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3) of neutral lipids and phopholipids in rotifers reflected the EFA composition of each diet. Diet B-fed rotifers had the highest content in 20:4n-6 and 20:5n-3, whereas rotifers fed diet A and the highest 22:6n-3 content. The mixed diet I. galbana + N. gaditana enhanced substantially the composition of lipid classes i.e. neutral lipids and of n-3 PUFA of rotifers in comparison with Isochrysis or yeast diets.  相似文献

Three species of microalga, the freshwater Euglena gracilis and the marine Dunaliella salina and Tetraselmis suecica, were compared in terms of vitamin E enrichment and survival and growth of the brine shrimp Artemia salina. The tocopherol content was investigated using HPLC for the post-larval and pre-adult stages of Artemia fed the microalgae and the results compared to the initial content of unfed newly hatched nauplii. There was a markedly higher content of tocopherols (about two-fold) in Artemia fed Euglena. Since this microalga contains other antioxidants such as -carotene, vitamin C and glutathione, bioactive molecules such as PUFA, and the immunostimulant polysaccharide -glucan, it represents a valuable alternative for enriching the diets of Artemia and increase its nutritional value as a food item.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to study fatty liver disease caused by different ether extract levels in diets of juvenile Sciaenops ocellatus. Juvenile S. ocellatus (n=1,260; initial body weight approximately 2.73 g) were divided into nine treatment groups (triplicate groups per treatment) and fed in aquatic cases by a recirculated filtered rearing system; the temperature of the aquatic cases was maintained at 23.2±2.0° for 8 weeks. Nine kinds of diets containing different protein (38, 42, 46%) and ether extract levels (4, 8, 12%) were used. Results showed that the relative growth ratio and survival ratio of the fish fed on medium lipid diets (8%) or high ether extract diets (12%) were significantly lower than those of the fish fed on low ether extract diets (4%) (p < 0.05). There was a positive correlation between the ether extract contents in hepatopancreas of fish and the ether extract contents of diets. At the end of the experimental period, the fish of the nine experimental groups suffered from different degrees of fatty liver disease and serious illness, and death occurred in a large number of fish fed on medium (8%) and high ether extract diets (12%) from the third test week; mortality was highest in the fifth test week. The ill S. ocellatus showed symptoms of loss of appetite, lack of movement, black skin, and weight loss and eventually died. The main pathological change in ill fish was fatty liver disease. Their hepatopancreas were swollen and pale, accompanied by fatty degeneration, fatty necrosis of hepatocytes, and atrophy of the pancreas. Ultrastructural changes showed the presence of many lipid droplets and granules in the mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, and cell plasm of hepatocytes. Study results indicated that all the nine kinds of diets with different lipid or protein levels could cause nutritional fatty liver disease in juvenile S. ocellatus. The pathological severity and serious level of fatty liver disease in the tested fish positively correlated with the contents of the ether extract, but not with those of protein, in test diets. The increase in the level of ether extract in test diets was responsible for the direct cause of illness or death in juvenile S. ocellatus. The eating pattern is altered by high-fat diet-induced obesity. To clarify whether this is dependent on the fatty acid profile of the diet, the authors conducted two studies on adult female Sprague-Dawley rats fed normal-fat chow or high-fat diets with varying fatty acid composition. Eating pattern and body weight were assessed in rats fed canola-based (low in saturated fatty acids) or lard-based (moderate in saturated fatty acids) diets for 7 days, and in animals fed chow or canola- or butter-based diets (rich in saturated fatty acids) for 43 days. These parameters were also determined when restricted amounts of low-fat canola- or butter-based diets were consumed for 25 days. Early exposure to canola or lard high-fat feeding or prolonged access to canola- or butter-based fat-rich diets (relative to chow feeding) did not alter the normal light-dark distribution of food and energy intake. All animals ingested most of their food during the dark phase. However, feeding the high-fat canola- and butter-based diets produced an altered eating pattern during the light phase characterized by a smaller number of meals, longer intermeal interval, and enhanced satiety ratio, and consumption of shorter-lasting meals than chow-fed animals. Relative to canola or chow feeding, butter-fed animals consumed a lower number of meals during the dark phase and had a higher eating rate in the light phase, but ate larger meals overall. Only butter feeding led to overeating and obesity. When given a restricted amount of low-fat canola- or butter-based diet at the start of the light phase, rats ate most of their food in that phase and diurnal rather than nocturnal feeding occurred with restriction. These findings underscore the role of saturated fatty acids and the resulting eating pattern alteration in the development of obesity. (Author correspondence: )  相似文献

We studied the growth and assimilation of larvae of Anabolia nervosa, a lotic trichopteran shredder, on diets of fresh tissue of the submerged macrophyte Potamogeton perfoliatus and fresh leaves of the trees Alnus glutinosa and Fagus sylvatica. Fifth-instar larvae were fed these three diets for 23 days (20 May–12 June) in the laboratory. Instantaneous growth rate and gross growth efficiency were almost the same for larvae fed Potamogeton and Alnus, but lower for larvae fed Fagus. The larvae consumed 3 times more fresh Potamogeton than Alnus leaves, but the same amounts in terms of dry mass. The consumption of fresh Fagus was initially twice that of the two other food items but dropped rapidly during the experiment, following the marked seasonal decline of leaf nitrogen content. Allocation patterns of fat and protein differed among food sources. Larvae grown on Alnus accumulated more fat than larvae grown on Potamogeton, while the reverse was true for protein accumulation. The assimilation efficiency based on carbon units was the same (44%) for all three food items and was among the highest reported for shredding caddis larvae. The study demonstrates that fresh tissue of Potamogeton perfoliatus provides a valuable food source to the facultative shredder herbivore Anabolia nervosa.  相似文献

The use of food industry by-products in insect feeds has gained increasing attention recently. However, the understanding of how well the economically valuable edible insect Ruspolia differens (Serville) (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) can grow and develop with plant-based by-product feeds is currently lacking. It is important to determine the nutritional requirements, especially protein demand, of this species before developing artificial feeds for mass-rearing. We reared R. differens with four control diets and 12 plant-based by-product diets in which the major protein source came from food industry by-products, including potato-protein, barley mash, barley feed, turnip rape, a mix of broad bean and pea, and a mix of potato, carrot, and apple. We asked whether the performance (development time, survival, and weight), feed conversion, and fatty acid composition and content differed among diet treatments. Furthermore, the 12 experimental by-product diets were designed to reach six protein levels. We found that R. differens can be reared with various by-product diets, but development time, survival, and weight differed among diets. Barley feed, barley mash, and potato protein diets seem to be good options for rearing, and potato glycoalkaloids do not affect the performance of R. differens. Individuals fed on the various by-product diets also differed in their fatty acid composition and content. Increasing protein levels in diet up to 17% enhanced growth, development time, and survival, but no further enhancements were seen when fed diets with protein levels higher than this. The high protein levels decreased feed conversion rate. Our results can be valuable for designing feeds for insect mass-rearing technology. The use of food industry by-products in the diets for R. differens could increase the re-use of local resources and enhance circular economy.

Laboratory cultured fairy shrimps Branchipus pasai and Chirocephalus kerkyrensis, fed on an alga (Selenastrum capricornutum), a yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and an HUFA enriched yeast (Lansy PZ, produced by Artemia Systems, Gent, Belgium) were evaluated for their fatty acid (FA) profiles and total lipid content in order to obtain information on species differences in food conversion. The results indicate significant qualitative and quantitative differences (P < 0.001) in FA profiles both of feed and of fairy shrimp species. Among the three different diets, an appreciable lipid amount was recorded in the alga, as compared with baker‘s yeast which showed the poorest lipid content. The algal fatty acid profile showed adequate amounts of the EFA 18:2n6, 18:3n3 and20:5n3 (the most meaningful for aquacultural purposes). The enriched yeast was characterised by a considerable total lipid amount and by the presence of all the EFA. The overall amounts of fatty acids in the fairy shrimps correlated well with their levels in the feed(r > 0.9, P <0.001). An exception was noted in then-3 HUFA (highly unsaturated fatty acids) and n-6acids, among the individuals fed on yeast. Highly significant differences (P < 0.001) were also noted between the two fairy shrimp species fed on the same food type. When fed enriched yeast, both B. pasai and C. kerkyrensis profiles roughly reflected diet composition. However, when fed on algae or baker‘s yeast, the two species, though to different extents, exhibited higher EFA levels than those recorded in the food. This seems to support the existence of a partial FA bioconversion capacity in fairy shrimps previously noted in the case of the brine shrimp Artemia.
