Parsons, J. L. and Townsend, L. W. Interplanetary Crew Dose Rates for the August 1972 Solar Particle Event. Using the coupled neutron-proton space radiation transport computer code (BRYNTRN), estimates of dose rates of protons in the skin, ocular lens and bone marrow, behind various thicknesses of aluminum shielding, for crews on space missions outside the Earth's magnetosphere, are made for the large solar particle event (SPE) of August 1972. Overall, the August 1972 dose rates are significantly higher than those estimated for any of the events that occurred in August-December 1989. The dose rates in the August 1972 SPE are not low dose rates as specified by the major national and international advisory bodies and committees. 相似文献

Using the Langley Research Center galactic cosmic-ray transport computer code and the Computerized Anatomical Man model, initial estimates of interplanetary exposure of astronauts to galactic cosmic rays, during periods of solar minimum activity, are made for a realistic human geometry shielded by various thickness of spacecraft aluminum shielding. Conventional dose assessment in terms of total absorbed dose and dose equivalent is made for the skin, ocular lens, and bone marrow. Included in the analyses are separate evaluations of the contributions from the incident primary ions, from subsequent-generation fragmentation products, and from target fragments. In all cases considered, the equivalent sphere approximation yielded conservative overestimates for the actual organ exposures. 相似文献

As a part of the near solar system exploration program, astronauts may receive significant total body proton radiation exposures
during a solar particle event (SPE). In the Center for Acute Radiation Research (CARR), symptoms of the acute radiation sickness
syndrome induced by conventional radiation are being compared to those induced by SPE-like proton radiation, to determine
the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of SPE protons. In an SPE, the astronaut’s whole body will be exposed to radiation
consisting mainly of protons with energies below 50 MeV. In addition to providing for a potentially higher RBE than conventional
radiation, the energy distribution for an SPE will produce a relatively inhomogeneous total body dose distribution, with a
significantly higher dose delivered to the skin and subcutaneous tissues than to the internal organs. These factors make it
difficult to use a 60Co standard for RBE comparisons in our experiments. Here, the novel concept of using megavoltage electron beam radiation to
more accurately reproduce both the total dose and the dose distribution of SPE protons and make meaningful RBE comparisons
between protons and conventional radiation is described. In these studies, Monte Carlo simulation was used to determine the
dose distribution of electron beam radiation in small mammals such as mice and ferrets as well as large mammals such as pigs.
These studies will help to better define the topography of the time-dose-fractionation versus biological response landscape
for astronaut exposure to an SPE. 相似文献

Some of the problems in determining the cancer risk of low-level radiation from studies of exposed groups are reviewed and applied to the study of Hanford workers by Mancuso, Stewart, and Kneale. Problems considered are statistical limitations, variation of cancer rates with geography and race, the "healthy worker effect," calendar year and age variation of cancer mortality, choosing from long lists, use of proportional mortality rates, cigarette smoking-cancer correlations, use of averages to represent data distributions, ignoring other data, and correlations between radiation exposure and other factors that may cause cancer. The current status of studies of the Hanford workers is reviewed. 相似文献

HIV-1 Gag drives a number of events during the genesis of virions and is the only viral protein required for the assembly of virus-like particles in vitro and in cells. Although a reasonable understanding of the processes that accompany the later stages of HIV-1 assembly has accrued, events that occur at the initiation of assembly are less well defined. In this regard, important uncertainties include where in the cell Gag first multimerizes and interacts with the viral RNA, and whether Gag-RNA interaction requires or induces Gag multimerization in a living cell. To address these questions, we developed assays in which protein crosslinking and RNA/protein co-immunoprecipitation were coupled with membrane flotation analyses in transfected or infected cells. We found that interaction between Gag and viral RNA occurred in the cytoplasm and was independent of the ability of Gag to localize to the plasma membrane. However, Gag:RNA binding was stabilized by the C-terminal domain (CTD) of capsid (CA), which participates in Gag-Gag interactions. We also found that Gag was present as monomers and low-order multimers (e.g. dimers) but did not form higher-order multimers in the cytoplasm. Rather, high-order multimers formed only at the plasma membrane and required the presence of a membrane-binding signal, but not a Gag domain (the CA-CTD) that is essential for complete particle assembly. Finally, sequential RNA-immunoprecipitation assays indicated that at least a fraction of Gag molecules can form multimers on viral genomes in the cytoplasm. Taken together, our results suggest that HIV-1 particle assembly is initiated by the interaction between Gag and viral RNA in the cytoplasm and that this initial Gag-RNA encounter involves Gag monomers or low order multimers. These interactions per se do not induce or require high-order Gag multimerization in the cytoplasm. Instead, membrane interactions are necessary for higher order Gag multimerization and subsequent particle assembly in cells. 相似文献

The identification of effective solar protectants for field application of the codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.), granulovirus (CpGV) is of interest to improve its efficacy and commercial viability as a biological pesticide. We evaluated several materials as potential adjuvants to protect CpGV from ultraviolet degradation. In laboratory tests with a solar simulator (9.36×106 J/m2), the addition of kaolin clay (Surround® WP at 3 and 6%, w/v), a paraffin wax-based emulsion (SPLAT? at 5%, v/v), and a bark extract trans-cinnamaldehyde combined with a film agent (both at 1%, v/v) did not significantly reduce larval entries or increase larval mortality in irradiated apples that were treated with a commercial CpGV product (Cyd-X). In semi-field tests in an apple orchard, a spray-dried lignin formulation containing CpGV (6.57×1012 OBs/ha) and a lignin-based adjuvant used with Cyd-X (both applied at 4.7–5.6 kg lignin/ha) significantly improved residual activity of CpGV compared with Cyd-X alone applied at the same rate. However, the benefits were short lived and could not be detected after 7 days. In orchard tests, we evaluated two additional refined lignin-products (Lignosulfonate and Vanisperse? CB at 5.61 kg/ha) and two particle film materials (kaolin clay, ‘Cocoon?’, and calcium with boron ‘Eclipse?’) as adjuvants for UV protection of Cyd-X (6.57×1012 OBs/ha) in tests against a dense codling moth infestation. Although all virus treatments were highly effective (causing ≥90% larval mortality), no significant effects of the adjuvant treatments could be detected. In these latter tests, the use of a silicone based wetting agent at 0.025% (v/v) may have been beneficial at increasing mortality among older larvae inside the fruit. 相似文献

A simple tool, TrackBeam, for rapid in situ estimates of potential exposure to the solar beam of objects underneath tree canopies is presented, tested and demonstrated to be useful in insect conservation studies. The tool can be used whenever accurate data on sun exposure is of use e.g., in ecological studies of saproxylic insects. TrackBeam draws upon the principles behind the analysis of hemispherical photographs but its use is much less dependent on the weather at the time of sampling. It may be used for detecting canopy openings in directions corresponding to the solar path. Based on this, periods of time with potential beam exposure and/or the proportion of sky that is not obscured by canopy for objects such as dead wood may be estimated. The results of using TrackBeam compares well between operators and with the corresponding results of analysed hemispherical photographs. Results are presented which show that TrackBeam was successfully used to characterise the habitat light requirements of the saproxylic beetle Melanotus castanipes (Coleoptera: Elateridae). 相似文献

We used sighting reports, including decades of citizen-reported Hawaiian monk seal (Neomonachus schauinslandi) sightings, to describe female breeding biology and reproductive success in the main Hawaiian Islands. We first used this data set to describe the timing of events in the female reproductive cycle. We then conducted an expert review of patterns in sighting histories to detect unobserved pupping events. Finally, we estimated the age-specific reproductive curve for female monk seals in the main Hawaiian Islands. Charting reproductive cycles showed indications of the robust condition of female monk seals in the main Hawaiian Islands; they nursed pups 12% longer than their counterparts in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and regained condition to molt more quickly after weaning a pup. By examining sighting histories, we were able to infer 25 unobserved pupping events that had previously gone uncounted. We accounted for additional uncertainty with a randomization procedure. After accounting for unobserved pupping events, the age-specific reproductive rate of main Hawaiian Islands monk seals exceeded 0.70 for prime aged females (8–18 years). This is the highest reproductive rate reported for any of the Hawaiian monk seal breeding sites, illustrating the important role of the main Hawaiian Islands population in Hawaiian monk seal recovery. 相似文献

The gut fluorescence technique was used to estimate ingestionand filtration rates of the adult female copepods Paracalanusparvus, Cenlropages brachiatus and Calanus austrails, and copepoditestages 3, 4 and 5 of C.australis in the southern Benguela upwellingregion. During the study period chlorophyll concentrations withinthe upper 20 m of the water column were high, 5 µg I1in mid-shelf waters and 1530 µg I1 in innershelf waters. Copepod gut pigment content was low and constantduring the day then increased sharply during the first 2 h aftersunset. Gut pigment content was 26 times higher duringthe night compared with daytime values. Small non-migratingcopepods (Paracalanus parvus) showed the smallest diel differencein gut pigment content and large migrating copepods (Centropagesbrachiatus and Calanus australis) the largest difference. Eggproduction rates were 20 and 50% of maximum at the mid-shelfand inner shelf stations respectively, suggesting food-limitation.Comparison of ingestion rates calculated from egg productiondata with ingestion rates calculated from gut pigment data suggestedthat the copepods were feeding omnivorously at the inner shelfstations but herbivorously at the mid-shelf stations. Assumingthat all of the phytoplankton was available as food, the nearshorecopepod assemblage grazed {small tilde}1% of the standing cropeach day, and the mid-shelf assemblage grazed 5% day1.Because of errors and uncertainties associated with the gutfluorescence technique, the feeding impact could be underestimatedby 24-fold. We discuss several approaches which couldlead to more precise estimates of feeding rates.

Carcinogenesis induced by space radiation is considered a major risk factor in manned interplanetary and other extended missions.
The models presently used to estimate the risk for cancer induction following deep space radiation exposure are based on data
from A-bomb survivor cohorts and do not account for important biological differences existing between high-linear energy transfer
(LET) and low-LET-induced DNA damage. High-energy and charge (HZE) radiation, the main component of galactic cosmic rays (GCR),
causes highly complex DNA damage compared to low-LET radiation, which may lead to increased frequency of chromosomal rearrangements,
and contribute to carcinogenic risk in astronauts. Gastrointestinal (GI) tumors are frequent in the United States, and colorectal
cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer accounting for 10% of all cancer deaths. On the basis of the aforementioned epidemiological
observations and the frequency of spontaneous precancerous GI lesions in the general population, even a modest increase in
incidence by space radiation exposure could have a significant effect on health risk estimates for future manned space flights.
Ground-based research is necessary to reduce the uncertainties associated with projected cancer risk estimates and to gain
insights into molecular mechanisms involved in space-induced carcinogenesis. We investigated in vivo differential effects
of γ-rays and HZE ions on intestinal tumorigenesis using two different murine models, ApcMin/+ and Apc1638N/+. We showed that
γ- and/or HZE exposure significantly enhances development and progression of intestinal tumors in a mutant-line-specific manner,
and identified suitable models for in vivo studies of space radiation–induced intestinal tumorigenesis. 相似文献

Summary The pelagic summer distribution of Antarctic seabirds, seals and whales was studied in the marginal ice zone of the northwestern Weddell Sea from November 1988 to January 1989. In order to relate top predators to other components of the ecosystem studied simultaneously, their distribution is mainly described in terms of energy flow. Bird, seal, and probably also whale requirements were highest in ice-covered areas. There was no evidence of higher numbers of top predators along the ice edge: densities generally increased further into the ice. In the pack ice, combined energy requirements of top predators often amounted to about 200.000 kJ/day/km2, or about 45 kg fresh food, indicating high abundance and availability of prey under the ice. There was a lack of conformity between top predator abundance on the ice and abundance of other life in the water column below. In open water, bird requirements were generally less than 25.000 kJ/day/km2, seals were virtually absent and whales were distributed unevenly. Tubenosed birds concentrated along the outer ice edge in early summer but they moved north to open water during December, leaving the area of maximum phytoplankton biomass associated with the retreating ice edge. This pattern matched northward movements of krill swarms that may be related to changes in quality rather than quantity of phytoplankton stocks.Data presented here were collected during the European Polarstern Study (EPOS) sponsored by the European Science Foundation 相似文献
